What's the value Thinkpad Active Protection System on Modern Machines?

Q: What's the value Thinkpad Active Protection System on Modern Machines?

This popped up on a laptop today:Prompt Text: Active protection is not functioning as system detected the abnormal sensor status. To diagnose the sensor device, run PC DOCTOR DOS - HDD Active Protection Test and if ti still shows, contact Help and Service for repair. Which got me wondering: Since all of our ThinkPad's (T440s through T480s; X240 through X270; X1 Carbon Gens 2 through 4; X1 Yoga) use SSD's, is there any value in keeping TAPS?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

To make it short I have both an x131e (Windows 7, video playback completely unsupported but that's for another time) and an x140e that came with Windows 8.1.  I upgraded the x131e to Windows 10 and tested Windows 10 temporarily on an SSD in the x140e. On both machines APS successfully installs but yet the program does not run in memory and it's not added to the Control Panel.  Is there another place hidden within the system I should know about? Edit: The latest version installs just fine on the x140e under 8.1 Pro, so I know at least that works.

hi, I'm using t420. I've replaced the HDD with a Crucial M4 SSD. I have some questions. The HDD will stop when a shock detected by TheThinkvantageActiveProtectionSystem. But now i'm using a SSD, I don't know that the Disk can be caused by stopping when a shock detected. Should I worry about it?

A:The Thinkvantage Active Protection System-Lenovo airbag protection

An SSD has no moving parts so there's no need to run APS. If you don't have any HDDs inside your T420, e.g. in the Ultrabay or mSATA, you can just uninstall APS altogether.

I just received an X1E, and it appears that Active Protection is installed (there is a process running called "Lenovo Active Protection System - Install Service" from a service called ApsInsSvc.exe. From what I understand this is redudant in a system with an SSD, so I thought I would try uninstalling it. However, I can't find a simple way of doing this. I found a couple of threads on this forum that points towards finding the uninstaller via the registry. I followed this advice, but there is no uninstall registry entry. I can just disable the service, but would prefer to do a clean remove. Any suggestions on how to remove it? Thanks,

Did a Fresh install of Windows 10 Professional x64 on a X1 Carbon generation 6 (machine type 20KH).  Laptop came preinstalled with Windows 10 Professional. After the install the Device Manager shows no missing drivers. But the system is missing the "Lenovo Active Protection System Driver" which was installed on the new laptop. The driver version on the factory install was 1.82.5.4 release date 3/22/2018 and starts the ApsInsSvc.exe service. I have not been able to find the driver on X1 Carbon gen 6 Driver Download Page. Does anybody now where I can get this driver on the Lenovo website? I did find this driver for the X1 Carbon gen 5 here: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/pe/en/downloads/ds014892 I may have found the current driver at "Driver Identifer" but I should be able to get it from Lenovo: https://www.driveridentifier.com/scan/lenovo-active-protection-system-driver/download/1210017080/3AC...  Lenovo Support was unable to provide a copy of this driver and was not very helpful.

A:Lenovo Active Protection System

Welcome to the forum.

Here's a link to the Lenovo Active Protection System for Windows 10. This indicates support for X1 Carbon at least to 5th Gen. I don't know why X1C6 isn't included in the list of supported systems. Perhaps it's because this update was issued before 6th Gen came out and Lenovo neglected to update the list.

In any case, since APS is intended for use with HDD systems, I'm curious why you'd want to install it in the first place. As far as I know all X1C6 models come with SSDs rather than HDDs.

Hi,since i had to reinstall my windows 10, installing of 'ThinkVantage Active Protection System for Win 10' is not possible anymore. The installation of the downloaded (https://support.lenovo.com/de/de/downloads/ds014892) file to: C:\SWTOOLS\READYAPPS\HPROTECT is still possible. But the following step of the actuall installation of the program fails. I always get an error that a higher version of ThinkVantage Active Protection System has already been installed. But unfortunately there isn't any entry in the control panels for this programm (like before my reinstallation of windows 10) and i also can't find it in the list of installed apps and programs to uninstall and reinstall it.  In the past I had windows 7 and updated it to windows 10. This time I immediately reinstalled windows 10 from a backup I made on a external harddrive. Do you have any suggestions how i can try to uninstall this (probably not working) programm, so that I can reinstall it? The actuall reason I do this is, that my autorotation hasn't been working since i reinstalled windows 10 and I try to follow the advices of the following link: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Tablet-and/ThinkPas-X230-Tablet-Auto-Rotate-under-Win... Thank you for your help! Hello, I am using P70, and installed M2 SSDs for system partition, and replaced the SATA HDD by SSD.It seems to me that active protection system is no longer necessary for this configuration,However, the active protection system background application is keep running.I consulted Lenovo engineer, he suggested me to go into the device and printer menu, and then turn off the protection.I found that there was no such options inside the menu, and it was not provided at Lenovo settings either. It seems to me that although the resources that the app is taking is not much,if the user feels it no longer necessary, there should be a way to stop running it,in "Official, Supported" way..Is there such a way that I haven't tried? Or is it not yet to be supported? Currently I installed W10 enterprise on the system over W10 Pro, which was preinstalled. If it was the cause of the problem, I am also curious that is it legitimate to me to ask for any patch (or anything...) for this kind of problem. Thank you in advance.

Welcome to Lenovo Community! And happy to have you here.

As I understand that you have query regarding Lenovo Active Protection System in your P70
So try to check in Control Panel-> System and Security -> Lenovo Airbag Protection -> adjust protection settings
You can disable it from there. Or else uninstall it from Programs & features.

With good reason, security and information protection is top of mind for many businesses.

In today?s world, the market for cyber-attacks on businesses is wide-reaching and attacks are increasingly high-profile and successful in execution. We?re seeing network breaches resulting from techniques as simple as username and password theft. In a couple of recent cases, hackers infiltrated Fortune 500 companies using stolen usernames and passwords which gave them access to point of sale systems and the credit card data being processed with them. The attacks resulted in the theft of millions of credit card numbers which quickly ended up in the black market. Recently, the New York Times reported that 1.2 billion... Read more

There were 3 machines exactly the same brand new from dell PIII's, win98se. I installed a terminal emulator program in them one computer worked fine but when the people went to use the other two. The terminal emulator (IDXterm) gave the following error when the user typed "999-99-9999" in a SS# field.

"IDXTerm cause a general protection fault in module user.exe at 0004:00005ff0"

I have tried changing the video driver, updating it, changing the settings, just in case is related according to technet. I finally re-installed windows 98. Still is giving the error.

This only happens on 2 out of 3 new machines. If is not the memory sticks, what can it be any ideas on this mystery? >

Also, the program was uninstalled and re-installed, of coarse.

A:general protection on brand new machines

Well, the program is the thing causing the error.

What happens if they put in a real SS#?

I had been having a problem with my laptop that makes the screen reddish for almost a year. I tried everything - creating, setting, deleting Windows color profiles, updating drivers, disabling drivers... I got a bit desperate and started disabling services and processes until I disabled the following process:...and my screen was suddenly OK. Notice how the screenshot is also reddish. This again is due to that little **bleep**. I don't know what it does but it even manages to crap all over screenshots, not just the display. After I found that this caused the trouble, I deleted all of it at this location:C:\Program Files (x86)\Lenovo\ImController\PluginHost Now everything works fine and I can see white on my screen for the first time in a year.

Is this the right place to submit a request?  Intel shipped the 7600p drives with a firmware that uses the same NQN for every drive, 11111111-2222-3333-4444-555555555555. Modern versions of Linux like the certified Ubuntu 18.04 validate the drives NQN. Intel has patched their firmware to generate a random NQN for every drive.  However, you cannot flash their firmware on Lenovo supplied drives, you must use Lenovo's firmware update utility. Intel's firmware flasher will not work due to the Lenovo name on the drive. The X1 and the P1 are capable of having two drives, causing this issue.  The request is to update the Lenovo drive firmware updater to have this Intel fix.

So I found this as I was trying to find out how to send a false positive to McAfee Avert Labs and was intrigued so I tried it.

McAfee Active Protection

I was first puzzled by its description so I googled it and found out it was actually the Artemis Technology. Here's the article I read about from McAfee:

McAfee, Inc. Reinvents Computer Security

After reading that I was so impressed and tried it. I was not contented of how McAfee secures my PC so I needed to find a way to boost it's protection. When the installation was completed I downloaded some fresh Malware from the Malwarebytes forum and was surprisingly startled as how McAfee blocked off almost every malware I downloaded. I accept any criticism from anybody who hates McAfee but I was proven that I might stick with this one for a while. I am open to any opinions on what I have found.

A:McAfee Active Protection

If I can remember correctly, in newer versions of Mcafee Security centre you should already have Artemis preinstalled. And have settings where you configure it (on that install you were talking about, you can't configure it), So there shoulnd't be any need to additionally install it.
But I can't remember clearly. Maybe they have implemented Artemis only for some products.
But I don't think so, I think all McAfee now have Artemis preinstalled eventhough they don;t have configurations.

Artemis is very good addition to McAfee but it's is known for it's relatively high false positives rate.
Basically, Artemis is cloud scanner. If scanner detects something suspicious it will send it to the cloud scan and scan it there.
Detctions from Artemis will be called Artemis! and some new generated number or something like this. So actually you will know that it was detected by Artemis.

I do because their (AV providers) security will improve as samples of user encountered malware are sent back to them. Symantec and many other AV vendors have the same feature... Any reputation-based AV must develop the "reputation" of the file(s) somehow...

Something is wrong as you should have two buttons on your first image (Exit and Stay Protected). Try the following. In an admin account open 360 Total Security settings. Under the General tab uncheck the box next to 360 Self Protection. You will need to scroll to the bottom as it's the last setting. Open Task Manager and under the Processes tab highlight QHSafeTray and end the process. It will be a bit before the 360 icon in the system tray will no longer be present.

I want to scan this puppy with as many scanners as possible.

I don't want any "active protection" or any software that will interfere with Windows Defender.

I just want a scanner that will scan a drive.

What I use now:

1) Malewarbytes
2) Emisoft (works GREAT if you haven't tried it)
3) SuperAntiSpyware

Can you guys recommend any light third party scanners to use in addition to this?

Traits I'm looking for:

1) light (no active protection)
2) free

Thanks guys

I am a developer and also Windows user and curious about some things. From reading this forum, I think the nice knowledgeable people here will be able to help!

Are Modern UI apps truly sandboxed? If so, how will system apps like A/V, Firewalls, and others work from a sandboxed environment?

Can system apps from the Old Desktop scan and check things related to Modern UI apps?

I am trying to find out how much Modern UI apps and Desktop apps can communicate and coexist. Also, when the old desktop apps go away (if it goes away), how Modern UI apps will deal with System Applications.

Modern UI apps seem like WPF apps to me with an XML style interface and code behind with a new framework for the tiles. Is that correct?

Thanks!

you should browse the "Building Windows 8 Apps with C# and XAML" book by Jeremy Likness. he gives a good description of what's happening.

Should I turn on the active protection?
How does it impact the system's speed and responsiveness? (I don't care about the increased ram usage, I have enough ram)
I am running windows 10 pro x64 with Windows Defender+MBAE+MBAR+Avira Browser Safety

Hi. We have an old CRM system that is currently local to only a single location and we are looking to transition it to a more modern, web-based system with network capability and would appreciate any advice about the best way to go about it.

Basically, we currently have a fairly simple Microsoft Access (2007) database system, into which customer information and updates are added and from which regular reports are generated based on that data.

It is a fairly simple database with only two main tables: a customer info table and a transaction table with a one-to-many relationship between the two. There are other tables but they are mostly lookup tables used by the input forms and reporting in order to standardize input values.

The problem is that currently this database is only accessible from one main office location. We have four other branch offices in different locations across the state, and the process in the past has been for those branch offices to fax daily customer updates to the main office where the data is collected and then added to the database.

However, we want to decentralize and modernize this process by moving the data entry and reporting out of the central office and into the individual branch offices instead, allowing each branch location to track and manage their own customer data, but we want those offices to share a central database repository between them.

What I'm trying to figure out is how to migrate the currently out... Read more

Since no one has replied, all I can recommend is checking into Microsoft Dynamics. I think they are ending life of BCM and not even sure that can be cloud based. I found this...I hope it's helpful! If not, disregard.

Does anyone know if Lenovo is going to release the Thinkpad yoga 15 with an active pen or is this a dead dream at this point? My suppliers have no clue and even the touch only thinkpad yoga's are hard to get here in Canada.

A:Thinkpad Yoga 15 with active pen

I ordered my Yoga 15 with intel realsense camera from Amazon US, and got it shipped to me in Nigeria, you can do same. With respect to the availability of the active pens with yoga 15, only Lenovo can help with that answer.

I think this is a simple question but no amount of research I have done in the forums has provided a clear explanation....is the Active Pen 2 just the next generation of the Thinkpad Pen Pro or is something else going on here. Trying to figure out which pen to spec with a couple of X1 Extreme's and I just want to confirm that the Active Pen 2 would be the latest and greatest??

A:X1 Extreme - Thinkpad Pen Pro vs Active Pen 2

Think I might have found my answer in a somewhat obscure Lenovo Pen document: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht500011 D. ThinkPad Pen Pro  (also known as Active Pen)An active penRequires one AAAA batteryThe largest size pen availableAlways housed externally of the systemCan be stored with an external holder accessory that attaches to the USB portMouse-click input

Hello, Does the 6th Gen Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon support an active pen?I don't see it advertised anywhere but I see pens available for it on other websites.  If so, do I need a specific screen option for it, or will the basic [14" FHD (1920 x 1080) IPS anti-glare, 300 nits] display work too? Thank you.

I?m using a 3D cadcam package to run a cnc machine tool. It?s a 2009 version and will run on nothing newer than windows vista as an operating system. I have looked at second hand systems but would rather locate a new machine. Can anyone help? I'm looking for a 17? laptop that comes with Windows V

A:Modern laptop required with a vista operating system.

Welcome to the forum. The simple answer is to get any pc and then run Vista under free virtual box as this will run any o/s its simple to do lots of support and free so you can have a fast modern pc with latest windows and use it for cad when needed It maybe the only way to do it as you may have problems getting drivers for vista for a modern pc this way its better as you get more power for cad and VB has all the drivers for vista etc. https://www.virtualbox.org/

About 5 years ago, I screwed up the config.sys on our first computer while trying to install a zip drive. As far as I know, the drive itself has been fairly safe and inert, and should have no major problems with bad sectors or otherwise.

The system was a DOS 5.0-based 486SX capable of running Windows 3.1 and all sorts of goodies. We have some valuable financial data that we've put off retrieving till now, both because we didn't have the knowhow or the resources to do so.

So right now, my mission is to get it connected as a slave drive in our brand-spankin' new Athlon2000 XP Pro-based system, salvage all the data, and hope that Excel or something is able to convert all the old database files we had on that system.

I had to do the same thing for the hard drive from a pentium 133, and it went off without a hitch--XP detected it and its two windows 95 (FAT16?) partitions, made it immediately available, and I just drag and dropped it all in.

The older hard drive, however, isn't being detected. I'm not familiar enough with technological trends to figure out what file partitioning system it was formatted under (FAT16, I'd like to believe, but is there a predecessor to that which would have been used circa 1992?)

If anybody could point out how I might go about actually mounting this drive and accessing its various file structures, and how I might port them to a newer hard drive using XP or command line instructions, I'd be most grateful.

Hey Guys I'm rather confused about the pen support for the new Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga 15. I've read quite a bit about it and find the information quite inconsistent. Some say it does support active pen some say it will in april and some say it doesn't. What I would like to know:A.) What kind of pen technology does the Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga 15 support atm?B.) Are there any changes in sight? / When? / What changes?C.) Can I write on it while resting my hand on the screen aka has it palm rejection?D.) How good is it for note taking? Can it keep up with my writing speed? Links to videos where I can actually see it being used / tested would be greatly appreciated.

A:Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga 15 Active Pen

From what I know there isn't too much information out so far. But here's what I found out. First off, the current Thinkpad Yoga 14 and 15 don't support pen digitizers at all, and will not in the future.Secondly, the Toshiba Encore 2 Write apparently uses the same technology. See this thread. Here's what I know:- It's called Wacom "Active ES" as in Active Electro Static.- It's battery powered. Unlike Wacom's older technology, you need a battery in the pen.- Palm rejection is more of a driver thing and not the technology. So it works, basically.- People say it feels "different", not sure if that means better or worse.- Precision is apparently very good, perhaps even better than the older tech without battery.- Pen lag (speed) doesn't seem to be an issue. Might even be better than the older technology. Other than that I personally couldn't find any information about whatever will be built into the Thinkpad Yoga 14 and 15 Only that they call it "Active Pen" and that it will be out in April. Also that the displays will support something called "anypen" which basically means you can use any pen-shaped metal object to write on the display. But that isn't really of any interest to me because I want pressure sensitivity.

I bought a ThinkPad P52s (20LB001BUS) 2 months ago and a few weeks ago decided to get a pen to do some simple work on my laptop... Lenovo sales person first suggested I can use Active Pen 2 with my laptop and I bought it from Lenovo Website. Eventhough it did connected to my laptop, didn't work at all. Lenovo technical support connected to my laptop and tried to figured it out but no hope so I returned it.  I contacted Lenovo customer service again and asked if there is another pen that is truly compatible with my machine and he suggested ThinkPad Pen Pro. Of course this one also failed to do the job with my machine.  Long story short, after a few long conversations with Lenovo sales people (including technical support), I understand Lenovo team cannot tell me whether this machine is compatible with a pen (either Lenovo or any other brand) or not. That must be a very not-funny joke and reality...  So I am hoping to hear someone's experience with P52s touchscreen and a pen (active or stylus whichever). It doesn't have to be Lenovo as long as it works with P52s.  CheersG

Hi,Got this issue with the lenovo active pen 2 on my thinkpad X1 extreme, the pen works well on windows ink (so not a pen issue),...but that's allOn all other softwares, photoshop, Paint Pro, Kryta, the pen is not responsive, pressure levels works very badly, and a lot of LAG.Is there some drivers update to make this pen work ? It's a shame that this pen work on lenovo tablet but NOT on this supposedly top notch thinkpad ! If someone has a solution please share, I bought this laptop mainly for that purpose. Thanks.
