After Windows 7 auto update, windows will not boot

Q: After Windows 7 auto update, windows will not boot

Windows 7 prof started installing updates before shutdown. When computer turned on again, it would not boot and the mouse was not to be found. Error message said could not repair the problem and showed option of system restore. Since there was no mouse working I had no cursor and could not choose system restore as a result. After two or three tries, I did control alt delete during startup and windows loaded normally. I think it finished configuring updates then acted normally. Afraid now to turn it off. Any ideas?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi Guys,

Windows 7 auto-updated last night, and left me with a big mess today.

A lot of windows services are not responding at all, will not open, some freeze ect...

It all started with windows getting stuck at the blue screen, something along the lines of preparing windows ect, do not shut down. It kept looping on restart.

I got it to finally get to windows but..

Windows Update (does not open at all)
System Restore Opens *but* I apparently do not have any restore points
Safe Mode with Network boots to a black screen (safe mode in all 4 corners though)
Microsoft excel does not open
Cannot uninstall Microsoft starter 2010

I deleted all files under c>windows>softwaredistribution>download

I downloaded the service pack 1 manually from Microsoft website, the .exe file will not run at all.

So there it is, I can browse the internet but most windows services do not run.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Download Windows 7 Services Repair to your desktop.
Important that this tool is on Desktop!
Right Click Run as Administrator.
Type 2 into the CMD window, hit enter.
Allow it to complete.
Then type 3 into the Command window, hit enter.
Allow that to complete as well.
Then reboot your machine.

This was a nasty virus. I would attempt to run windows update but it would give me an error code and told me to check my connection. Norton would not update. Most free AV I could download but not update. When I would do any search on Google or MSN, it would redirect. It would also give me a google page does not exist if I went to a windows download update sit. After 2 days of working on this issue and using every AV I could find, I stumbled across a google group addressing this problem. It said to access this website, http://www.softpedia.com/get/Antivirus/Trojan-Remover.shtml This trojan was nasty but the program took about 5 minutes and cleared it. I didn't even have to go into safe mode. If your having this same issue, give this a shot before reinstalling anything, Hope it helps.

I have just started to use Windows Defender on W8.1 and cannot see a way to get it to auto update without getting all the other Windows updates to auto update as well. I prefer to manage the general Windows updates myself and decide when (or if) to apply them. However, like other AV products, I would lIke it to update automatically.

Any thoughts on how to do this - it must be able to do it

A:Auto update Windows Defender

I thought it did by itself? First off, you can set windows updates to only install important updates, and uncheck the box that says give me recommended updates the same way I receive important updates. That way you do not have to install recommended updates. Important updates should be installed no matter what, they protect your computer, etc.

If you don't want to do that, then see if it auto-updates despite the windows update being off, on its own. Give it a few days. If it does, you got it! If not, there is a high high chance you cannot do anything to keep it updated, as it is a built in windows feature

I was stuck with 640 x 480 at 16-bit color.

When I get to the 'Install Updates' page, my computer always fails at installing the updates.

Any ideas as to why my computer won't receive/install the required critical updates?

Also...I utilize Microsoft Outlook (not Outlook Express). Outlook Express allowed one to 'switch identities.' I have found no such option in Outlook. My wife and I have separate e-mail accounts under the same ISP, and Outlook has to be shut down and restarted to change over to her account.

Am I missing something?

I tried changing Windows update to notify only. When I do that and uncheck that particular update and select 'do not notify me' for that update, I still get notified that I need the update.
I even tried install .net 3.0. Still getting notified.

Can anyone help on this?

Hey mates,

This is a very "beginner"question. I'm somewhat familiar with windows (not as much as I thought or wanted to be) , but basically the problem is this. Windows shuts down on a regular basis in the middle of work, quitting every program, reboots, and isntalls updates. I am pretty sure this is related ot the "action center" and whatnot, but how do I control that so that it
asks if it wants to restart (in the past, it asked to postpone 10 min, 4 hours etc) now it doesnt' seem to be doing that.
where I set how frequently it does that.

Thanks.

When 7 windows starts on my computer, it runs an auto update.  When it fails, it reverts.  The restarts Windows.  Performing this loop endlessly, Windows never reaches the login screen.  I have run the diagnostics that come with windows.
The extended memory test found no errors.  The startup test found no errors, but ended with the statement, "Unspecified changes to system config might have caused the problem."  Then it goes on to state Repair action: system files
integrity check and repair error code 0xa.  Time 7036ms, but seemed to run much longer than that.
Is there a bootable application that would allow a Windows tech to remote access my machine?
The other thing that I observed before Windows reached this stage is that Windows thinks that it is not genuine.  My daughter had purchased the Windows 7 upgrade from Vista when she was attending college.  Windows 7 has been running on the machine
for about 7 years and passed the genuine test several times during this time.  I have the installation disk and product keys.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as the computer is no longer usable.

Download Fatdog64. Burn the iso to disk by right clicking on a Windows 7 and later computer and selecting burn disk image. You can use Rufus with the iso to create a bootable USB flash drive. Backup any data on the flash drive first. Depending on your computer, attach the flash drive and tap the key to bring up the boot menu and select the flash drive or DVD drive.

At the Fatdog64 desktop you will see your hard drive partitions in the lower left labeled sda1..sda2..etc. Clicking once on the sdaX icon will open a File Manager. If you do not see your Windows files close out the window and select another sdaX partition. For Windows 10 the partition may be sda3.

Once you have selected the correct partition attach a USB flash or external drive to the computer. A USB icon will appear next your DVD drive if you have one. Click once on it to mount and open another File Manager Window. Drag and move both windows until they are side by side. You can resize the windows by left clicking and dragging a corner.

Highlight the files/folders you wish to copy by holding the Ctrl key + left clicking. You can also Left Click and Window around the files/folders. Once you have highlighted your files/folders drag them from the HDD Window to the USB external Window. A small dialog window will open. Select Copy and check the Quiet box.

As we all know, Windows interrupts a shutdown, usually at the end of a day, to start downloading an update. I want to be able to delay this to give me time to create a Restore Point, in case the update messes up my machine (it does happen). Before I had Windows 7 clean reinstalled I had this set up so I know it can be done. (There are help files about delaying the automatic restart after an update but that is not what I want.)

So how can I delay the actual update please?

A:How to delay Windows auto update

The best way surely is not to have it set to automatic update at all, but to set it so you choose when to download and install. You then have as much or as little control as you want, and whether you install the updates altogether or in batches the process will automatically involve creating a system restore point before the installation starts. To change the settings go to System Security in the Control Panel.

Is there a way I can just stop this from coming up like stopping a service or something? I just don't want to be sitting in front of the computer clicking "restart later" every 10 mins or so..

In short, Windows Security Center says that Automatic updates are off even though they are on.

HELP. I have an Acer Aspire 5610. It was running fine until there was an automatic update performed overnight. Now, I can't even get to Windows. I keep getting to the screen with the options for Safe Mode, last config, etc. No matter which one I click on it will act like it is starting, the blue screen flashes, then it returns right back to the options screen. Of course I do not have the disks for my laptop. I put an emachine boot disk for Windows 98 in the drive and that enabled me to get to a C prompt butttt....I do not know what to do from there. HELP Please

Hi,
I'm having problems getting auto update to install files. They down load fine and when i click to install they wont install.

Could I have disabled a windows service critical to the funtion ?

I want to find the files on my drive so i can execute them manually to see if that will work. Can any one tell me where they are downloaded to ?

(already tried the WUTemp folder but it is empty)

Hi guys, I just formatted my disk drive and installed a fresh copy of windows xp. But now the windows update keeps on failing and strangely the c drive cannot open normally, instead it prompts me to "open with" another program. Please examine my HTJ log and help me fix those problems. Thank you

I should start by saying that I just removed XP Total Security trojan/rogue yesterday. A website ran me through some registry keys to delete/change and after that I ran Mbam and BitDefender online scanner to check for infections.

All seems to be better now, except that in my system tray, Windows Security Alerts has a red icon, warning me that AU are turned off. When I try letting that program turn them on, it fails and gives instructions to do so manually. The odd thing is that in the Control Panel, System tab, AU appear to be on.

I'm not sure what to do, or if it's a sign that something is still worng. Any help would be appreciated

(I'm using Windows XP Media Center Edition, SP3)

Edit: In addition, I receive this message when I visit the Windows manual AU site:
"The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem."

A:Windows Auto Update issue after a Virus

Problem solved!

Microsoft had actually given me an error code on the updates site, which was cleverly hidden in the top right corner. The error code was:

"Error number: 0x80070424"

After seeing this number, I searched through the Microsoft support database and easily found a solution to enable WAU. I just had to reinstall the program. No signs of any virus remaining, and AU has been repaired. My thanks to anyone who considered my problem and apologies if I've wasted your time.

My ASUS Notebook was running fine when I went to bed the other night and Windows 7 did an auto update. I logged on the next morning and all the USB, Network Adapter, and Sound drivers were dead. I checked, and it appears that a few of the components of the Windows update did not complete successfully (.Net framework, Silverlight, etc.), so I assume this has something to do with it. I assumed it would be no big deal to fix the drivers, but boy was I wrong. Here's what I've tried (and failed) to fix the issue:

1. Uninstall latest updates (no effect).

2. Rollback to earlier recovery point (failed, no recovery points found even though I had system set to auto set them).

3. Update, rollback, uninstall, reinstall all affected drivers (reinstall fails every time with the message "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)").

4. Download drivers on other computer, burn to disc, install on broken system (same fail as in #3).

5. Uninstall all affected drivers, then use Driver & Utility disc that came with system to auto-detect and reinstall original drivers (same fail as in #3).

I can't connect to the net to run Windows Update again, and I can't back up my files since I have no USB connectivity. Is there anything I can do short of a total reformat? I assume the system is corrupted in some way. Is there a selective way to determine what's broken and a tool to repair it? Please help!

recently i've been having some very strange problems with my computer which i am not able to find a reason for. first of all, under the settings for window's firewall, i am not able to choose whether or not i want to enable it or disable it. it is set as disabled and both the enable/disable buttons are greyed out and i cannot click it. second, my auto update keeps turning itself off. after setting it back on, it will turn off the next time i boot my computer. third, i'm having some networking problems. i can connect onto the other computers of my network, however the other computers cannot connect to me. are all these problems related in anyway? and how do i solve them? thanks

A:windows firewall, auto update, network problems

You can enable the firewall by editing the HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SharedAccess\Parameters\FirewallPolicy\StandardProfile registry key, but it isn't a good sign that something is setting it back.

Hi guys, just wondered if anyone else is having the same problem and found a solution for me to attempt: After upgrading to Windows 10, the Yoga 11 isn't rotating properly. I've unlocked rotation via the manual button, and by going into tablet mode and changing the settings. Nada. It's stuck on the laptop orientation. (This inability to switch orientation defeats the whole functionality of a Yoga hybrid.) I've restarted once, and the autoration seemed to work fine after that, whether in tablet mode or tent mode or laptop mode...for a while. Now it's jinxed again. I didn't encounter this problem prior to the upgrade. Is there a more permanent way to fix the glitch than restarting ad infinitum? Suggestions welcome. Thanks!

Hello, I've gone through the Preparation guide and I believe I've followed all the rules, here's my problem:Running XP Home, Windows Firewall enabled1) Been getting lots of SystemErrorFixer pop ups and to a lesser extent AntiSpywareMaster pop ups. 2) I also notice that when clicking on folders in an external hard drive, just by opening them, Windows Explorer will crash and display the error msg about how it had to close. These folders haven't had anything new installed in them and just contain old video files. 3) Can't turn on Windows Automatic Update, tried going through usual routes such as services.msc and starting it, enabling hardwire profile, etc. as recommended in Microsoft support sites and others. Give the error 1048(I believe that's the one?) and says it can't be turned on no matter what I try.Running PC-Cillin 2008 with auto updates still working fine, did scans and clean attmepts with that as well as Avira, Ewido (online free version), and SUPERAntiSpyWare.
