Microsoft unveils PC security service

Q: Microsoft unveils PC security service

"Microsoft Corp., the world's largest software maker, unveiled Thursday plans to launch a computer subscription service that would include anti-virus and security updates for personal computers."Click to expand...

Ok look, here's my question:
When is enough enough?
Is this MS product overkill?

Do we really need to "pay" for additional security from M$?
What with our already installed Firewalls, Spybots, Ad-Aware's, Spyware Guard/Blasters, etc. etc.
Plus, will this make Windows Update ineffective or obsolete?

Preferred Solution: Microsoft unveils PC security service

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

MICROSOFT HAS UNVEILED a host of security features in its upcoming Windows 10 operating system in a bid to lure enterprise users into upgrading when it's released.

One of the major updates is to two-factor authentication, which Redmond says will provide more robust security than traditional single passwords that make more recent iterations of Windows vulnerable to data theft.

Microsoft seems to think that enhanced security should be a key focus for the new OS, as such issues are "central to many of the customer conversations" the firm has had since announcing the availability of the Windows 10 Technical Preview

Unfinished sneak peek runs only on Windows 7 and updated Vista SP2.

Microsoft today unveiled a public sneak peek of its newest browser, Internet Explorer 9 (IE9), aimed at Web developers and the technically brave of heart.

"The Platform Preview, and the feedback loop it is part of, marks a major change from previous IE releases," said Dean Hachamovich, the browser team's general manager, in a statement issued today before he took the stage at MIX10, Microsoft's Web developer conference, to publicly launch IE9.

Hachamovich promised that Microsoft would update the IE9 preview about every eight weeks, putting the first such update in mid-May with another to follow in mid-July. He did not, however, disclose a release schedule for the successor to 2009's IE8, the browser bundled with Windows 7.

With four versions, how do upgrades work from XP Pro and XP Home? Microsoft has kindly produced a chart to sort everything out.

In short, users of XP Home can do an upgrade install to any of the four Vista versions. However, XP Pro users can only perform upgrade installs to Business or Ultimate. Windows 2000 and Windows XP Pro x64 users can do no upgrade installs at all, and must perform clean installs (either on a fresh hard drive or an empty hard drive partition) for any Vista version.

Hi guysmiley !

Download the install file :
Then disconnect from the internet : if wired unplug the cable, if wireless right-click the wireless tray icon and click deactivate or turn the router off. Then disable your firewall and antivirus and try to install the file. Make sure you reenable your firewall and antivirus before you reconnect to the internet and tell us how that went.

If that didn't work install this other update for XML Core Services 4.0 SP2 first. According to this thread on the ms newsgroups it seems to work for most people.

I'm using windows 2000 professional and was infected by the blaster worm (get rid of it with the symantec tool), now I'm trying to apply the windows patch, but it says I have to have at least the windows service pack 2 in order to begin installation.

I tried several times to dowload the service packs from the Microsoft site, but they are huge (128 mb) and I'm on 56k, so I always get disconnected or timed out, also tried the online installation (smaller download), but the results were the same (after awhile, the download times out and I can't resume).

Is there any other place were I can download those files?, maybe FTP or something? (maybe someone could upload them to an FTP)?

As a side note, why aren't the files zipped/rared? I actually managed to download a whole .exe file (took me about 24 hours), only to find out it was damaged!

I have been subscribing to "Microsoft Security Advisory Notification" and a lot of other Microsoft news with my personal Microsoft account and many years ago I added my work mail as where subscriptions should be sent. Now several acquisitions later
that old mail domain will be shut down and I will not get mails sent to that address anymore.
I have been trying to add my new work mail as where those mails should be relayed, but it is not allowed to add an existing work mail as a subscription address in your private Microsoft account. You
must log in with a Microsoft account to create new alerts and I am not allowed to create a Microsoft account with my work mail, so I can create new subscriptions to that address. I get the feeling of a catch 22.
I find it really weird that your now allowed to send Microsoft news and especially the "Microsoft Security Advisory Notification" to your work mail, where you usually have a need to be notified about these kind of news.
Anyone got a suggestion about what I am doing wrong or have any idea of a feasible way to get this information sent to your work email?

We use a third-party Microsoft patch management system, unfortunately we have to approve all patches manually. It has become a monotonous task to jump on the security bulletin and manually "take-note" of all of the updates released (KB numbers)
to mitigate that vulnerability. After I take note of all of them, I have to jump on the "third-party Microsoft patch management system" and approve every patch (KB #) associated with that Bulletin.
I am wondering if there is an easier way to get a list of all of the new Microsoft patches released just for a specific Microsoft Security Bulletin. My current method is just sifting through the Bulletin and copying/pasting every KB number I find that is
designed to patch the vulnerability.
I would assume there is somewhere I can go or a tool I can utilize which would allow me to get the list of all of the KB numbers that need to be approved.
Or Am I out of luck (And just have to sift through the Bulletin to collect the associated KBs)?

I appreciate any and all suggestions/advice/ridicule.

Earlier today, NVIDIA has lifted the covers on a new GPU from their ?Fermi? family specifically targeting gamers: the GeForce GTS 450.

What NVIDIA did with the GTS 450 was look at the latest habits of today?s gamers and designed a GPU that would meet their needs at what will be a good price point for gamers on a budget ($129 according to their blog). According to Valve?s Steam Hardware & Software Survey for July 2010 ? 57% of gamers play between 1280x1024 and 1680x1050 screen resolutions. The Steam Hardware & Software Survey for August 2010 was released as well and that trend still holds true (it?s at 56.03% for August). With that in mind, NVIDIA designed the GTS 450 to provide the best experience on 19? to 22? monitors operating at resolutions between 1280x1024 and 1680x1050. According to the December 2010 Hardware and Software Survey by popular online game provider Steam, the GeForce 8800 is the most popular GeForce GPU in use today. NVIDIA launched the GeForce 8800 for Windows Vista nearly 3 years ago in support for DirectX 10. The GeForce 8800 GT was one of the most popular GPU upgrades at the time due to the performance/price ratio. The GeForce 8800 GT and its successor the 9800 (which is the second most popular GeForce GPU) have proven to be excellent GPUs. However, today NVIDIA is giving those who have these older GPUs a reason to upgrade: the GeForce GTX 560 Ti. NVIDIA?s own data shows that people tend to upgrade their GPUs every 3 years or so. And we?re just coming up on the 3 year mark since the GeForce 8800 was released so it?s the perfect time for the GTX 560 Ti to make its debut.

The GeForce GTX 560 Ti is a fantastic upgrade from the GeForce 8800 GT. Overall, the GTX 560 Ti shows a 3x performance increase over the GeForce 8800 GT. The GeForce 8800 GT had 512MB of GDDR3 memory, while the GTX 560 Ti has 1GB of GDDR5. The GTX 560 Ti also has an 822MHz graphics clock. The GTX 560 Ti is designed along the same lines as the GTX 570/580 where on a transistor level changes have been made to make it more efficient with power consumption. The basic goal for the new design NVIDIA has chosen with the GTX 500 series GPUs is to have great performance while consuming the least amount of power possible. hey guys, i just heard about this recently after reading another thread and it sounds great.

main points:

- free
- low system use
- created by microsoft (good or bad i guess)
- updated regularly

what do you guys think? i heard it only uses 5 or 6mb of memory and isn't plagued with the bloat and slowdowns other AV software create.

i'm just worried about giving MS too much information on my PC.

right now i'm running avast and this has been pretty decent for me so far, but this MSE sounds like it has promise.

edit: i'll be formatting soon so i thought i'd try it out with a clean system. im considering trying it out soon though.

Hi and thanks in advance for any assistance reply,I'm running Windows 7 Home basic SP 1 64bit os. Just a while ago I open www.mahagenco.in and a zip file containing total_run_mahagenco.exe 612kb and click_me_installer_mahagenco.exe 616kb automatically downloaded When I run it, nothing happened and it suddenly disappeared from my desktop. After assuming it was a virus, I run Windows Security Essentials and began a quick scan. Just in the middle of the scan, Windows security essentials shuted down, and the flag of messages in my task bar appeared, saying that Windows Security Center was turned off. I tried to turn it on, but a message saying "The Windows Security Center service can't be started" appeared. I restarted my computer but everything was the same, no MSE and no Windows Defender.I also open service.msc and restarted security centre but it was disabled after sometime. Also in internet explorer9 and google chrome i was automatically redirected to another sites. Then i run combofix whose log report is as follows - ComboFix 13-01-05.01 - PRANALI t 05-01-13 23:44:24.3.4 - x64Microsoft Windows 7 Home Basic SP1 [GMT 5.5:30]Running from: c:\users\PRANALI\Downloads\Programs\ComboFix.exeAV: Microsoft Security Essentials *Enabled/Outdated* {B140BF4E-23BB-4198-90AB-A51A4C60A69C}SP: Microsoft Security Essentials *Enabled/Outdated* {0A215EAA-0581-4E16-AA1B-9E6837E7EC21}SP: Windows Defender *Disabled/Outdated* {D68DDC3A-831F-4fae-9E44-DA132... I have applied Microsoft security baseline to Windows 10 IoT.

Can anyone please provide a workaround or a solution to revert back the system to previous/original state?
(Any way which can basically revert the system + group policy + registry settings back to the way it was before applying security baselines)

PS: Microsoft compliance toolkit itself does not have this option which is why I have mention even a workaround would help if you know any.

Note: Just reversing GPO will not help. We will need to revert GPO + registry + (potential changes introduced by baseline).

Hello guys (and girls),I don't give up very easy, that's not really my thing. But this here, is really out of my league.I feel like giving up at this point and leave the Digital Western World to go live in a cave.I am trying over a week now to get rid of Microsoft Security Essentials.I even suspect that there are two different Trojans/Programs running (Security Tool & Microsoft Security Essentials.I think I really tried everything. Running Rkill.exe to stop processes. Ran malwarebytes at least 50 times, threw the outcome away, but it will pop up right after restart. Ran Spybot S&D, threw stuff out of the registry. Nothing seems to help What the programs do is that everthing is considered a virus by one of them (MSE/ST), the Pop-up will say: "firefox.exe is a virus", ctrl+alt+delete+ a virus, etc;* Websites as: Trendmicro Housecall and SuperAntiSpyware are being bloked;* Programs like Ad-Aware and TweakXp are impossible to install;I read a lot of post from people that said that after they ran MalwareBytes, everything was nice and clean again... IMPOSSIBLE! It keeps on popping up, no matter what I throw away. I really am out of possibilities right now.I really am thinking about ditching my laptop (even though I am very attached to it).Especially when I read some scary stuff. When I tried to run Combofix.exe (without helper, figured I have nothing to lose) the .exe removed itself from my desktop saying:"maybe you have some sort of Virut-Virus?&... Firefox is a browser that is very well known and popular for its immense library of available add-ons, from themes that change the look and feel or the browser to extra functionality in general. One gripe that users have, though, is that the software needs to be restarted for changes to take effect; this isn't much of an issue for casual users, but for people constantly browsing the collection of modifications, it can become very tedious. Mozilla is well aware of this, and is stepping up the game to make for a better user experience. How? By announcing a new API called Jetpack.

They need to put functionality on the back-burner for a while and focus on speed instead, imo.

The Mozilla Foundation has unveiled an early version of its Firefox browser that it says could virtually eliminate one of the most common attack forms now menacing the web.
It implements an inchoate technology the foundation calls CSP, short for the Content Security Policy specification. It allows web developers to embed a series of HTML headers into their sites that by default block some of the most abused features from being offered. Newer versions of Firefox, and other browsers if they adopt the standard, would then enforce those policies across the site's entire domain.

Bitdefender has announced the availability of Bitdefender Adware Removal Tool for PC, the first public beta of its portable program to detect and remove unwanted software.

The Removal Tool arrives as a single 41.8MB executable file. There are no supporting files, and it doesn?t download anything else: just run it and go.

Program usage is just as straightforward. There?s no choosing a scan type, or location, no advanced settings to consider: agree to the user licence, click ?Get Started?, and that?s it.

There isn?t much power or configurability here, and presumably that?s the point. Bitdefender Adware Removal Tool is aiming to be a program that absolutely anyone can use to check and clean up their system, and it does that very well.Click to expand...
