Purchasing a laptop - opinions on minimum requirements

Q: Purchasing a laptop - opinions on minimum requirements

Hello guys?

I wanted to know your thoughts on laptops. I need to research a laptop, and one guy had told me that the really expensive ones are unnecessary, but the cheap ones not good. But that doesn't help me too much in selection.

What are the minimum requirements you would want in a laptop? The uses are home use... running this software: http://www.berninausa.com/product_overview-n6-sUS.html

And Windows XP or Vista... whatever comes with it, I guess. Oh... and it will be used to hold digital photos and run an edition software. It needs to have a disc drive.

I was just wondering what minimum requirements you would recommend.

Preferred Solution: Purchasing a laptop - opinions on minimum requirements

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

try pawn shops in your area. I work at one and we get them out all the time. They will usually be alot cheeper.

I have an old box currently running xp pro sp3. it's quite old and low on specs. the cpu is ok but it runs old sd-ram and i've maxed it out with 2 512mb sticks. HDD space is no problem. I want to run 7127 on it. realistically how well do people think it'll run. i'll turn off aero and any other unnecessary services. it needs to connect to the internet, run office 2007, msn messenger, rip/burn music, basic photo editing and not much more (definately no video editing but maybe be able to watch dvds).

i would like opinions please as i know that this meets the required minimal specs but i'm worried it perform "in the real world"

I have a Sandy bridge  Intel i5 processor with plenty of ram ,  just wondering if upgrading from Win 7 SP1 64 bit to Win 8.1 or Win 10 is worthwhile.

A:I wonder what will be the minimum requirements to run it .

You have ample power to do so.
I find that some of the processors that are below the Intel i3 processors, can have a bit of difficulty, in that they might hesitate here and there, but an i5 is the bomb and it can run just about anything.
Officially speaking, MSC says that these are the minimum requirements for 8.

Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster with support for PAE, NX, and SSE2 (more info)
RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit)
Hard disk space: 16 GB (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
Graphics card: Microsoft DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM driver

Those specs are ridiculously low, as 20 gigs of hard drive is way too little for even the most bare naked standard installations, once you start using it, and 1 gig of ram is just as bad. It'll run on 2, buit it'll run a lot better with 4 gigs.
As for the processor, you can look for any CPU that scores over 2,000 on the Passmark CPU page, and you'll have ample power to handle any Windows system.

Was looking on play.com for GTA4 and found the minimum requirements:

Windows XP with SP3 / Vista with SP1
1.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.4GHz AMD Athlon X2 64 or equivalent
1GB RAM (1.5GB for Vista)
16GB HDD Space
256MB nVidia 7900, ATi X1900 or equivalent
Internet connection required for installation and online play

They seem pretty steep for minimum, more of a recommended. Especially the graphic cards, the 7900 is still quite a high end DX9 card.

A:GTA 4 Minimum Requirements

They seem pretty steep for minimum, more of a recommended. Especially the graphic cards, the 7900 is still quite a high end DX9 card

7900 is a 4 generation old graphics card. If you're running a graphics card that low you probably already experianced GTA4 on xbox360/ps3 the way it will look with that GPU. I could be wrong but I would not be inclined to say a 7900 with be maxing out the game. Hopefully thats the minimum and reccomended is at least only 3 generations ago. I want it to look ALOT better than the console versions.

When a software program states it requires a minimum of 1GB to operate well, does that [I]include[I] the RAM needed to run the operating system? For example, if I'm running a machine with 2GB of RAM, and the program requires at least 1GB, do I therefore need at least 3GB of RAM?

A:minimum requirements

All software, when run, resides in RAM. Most apps and games specify the minimum amount of RAM you need to install them and run. This amount includes RAM that the computer needs to do its own background work as well as to run the app. So if a program says it needs minimum 1gb to operate, it'll run fine on a system with 2gb. However, I would also pay attention to the "recommended" memory which would be the RAM required for optimal performance of the program.

Generally speaking, memory requirements are specified taking into account the requirements of the application, operating system, supporting software and files, and other running processes.

I was just wondering, what does "Minimum Requirements" mean exactly? I know what it means, but I don't think that I completely understand it. Does it mean that if you have the bare minimum requirements for the game, that the game will play, but not exactly the way you might expect, or does it mean that the game will play ok, but it just won't have all the special effects, etc. that it could if you had the recommended requirements? I'm referring to GTA3, because that's where I had the problem. The minimum reqs. for GTA3 are a 500MHZ processor, 96 MB of RAM, a 16MB video card, etc. Now, I have a 556 MHZ celeron, 320MB Ram, and no video card (onboard video). And GTA3 still plays very slowly! I thought that since I have all this RAM, and my processor is a little faster than the minimum requirements, that it should play fine. So, is this how it's supposed to play?

A:Minimum Requirements for Games -- what does this mean?

You do have a video card if it is on the motherboard. It is probably still slow because you do not have 16MB of memory on your video for one thing. The requirements are "minimum" and there are normally a prefered configuration listed on the game as well or optimal game play.

Everything about my computer is good and fast to run Vista, except for my graphics card. I did an ATI Vista check and it says that my graphics card fails to meet minimum requirements because I have Pixel Shader 1.4 and I need 2.0 as a minimum.

Does this mean that I can't run Vista at all, even though I have Pentium 4 3.0 GHz, 1gb RAM etc....?

Also one more question about Windows ReadyBoost. If I connect my USB flash drive, will it act as fast as RAM on the motherboard?

Thanks for your help.

A:Vista Minimum Requirements

It will run but some graphics functions may not work (Aeroglas). ReadyBoost is claimed to boost Vista performance, but no it will not be as fast as system RAM.

I recently bought the HP Officejet 6210xi all-in-one. When I try to install the CD that came with it on my desktop I get a message saying the minimum required processor speed is 233 mhz, current processor speed is 232 mhz.

I have a Pentium II 233 mhz processor running W2K. I know itís really old. I have a wireless LAN setup with a newer laptop running WXP. But, Iíd like to install the all-in-one on my desktop rather that on my laptop. When I called HP tech support they said they canít help. That I would have to install it on another PC.

First, why does the printer detect my processor speed as 232 when itís really 233.
Second, is there a work around?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Dear All,

I hope this is the correct forum to ask this question - if not can a Mod move it to the appropriate place?

I have fixed a colleague's laptop. It was running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit with 1Gb memory and I gather that it prefers at least 2Gb.

Given that it is running with 1Gb (which I guess is the minimum), what is the recommended amount of memory for a Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit installation?

Thanks in advance

I'm considering upgrading from XP (SP 3) to Windows 7. Read the requirements and seem to meet them all except I'm not sure about the graphics. Computer is just shy of five years old. It has Pentium CPU @ 3 GHz, 2 GB RAM, 260+ GB of free hd space. Graphics card is GeForce 7300 LE, DirectX ver 9.0c. Don't know how to tell if driver is WDDM 1.0 or higher.

Two questions:
1) How can I tell if my graphics card/driver meet or exceed the minimum? and
2) If so, is this upgrade advisable, given the age of my system?

Can't help wondering how much longer Microsoft will continue to support XP and how much longer new software will run on it...

Would appreciate feedback...

Am I correct in assuming that all you need to test mobo functionality is HD, CPU, RAM, Video, and power? If the mobo is good, shouldn't it boot with just these components present. I am trying to verify if a laptop mobo is bad and I have eliminated HD, CPU, Video card, and RAM as the problem. Isn't mobo failure the only thing left?

A:Minimum requirements for testing mobo?

You don't need to have a HD connected to see if it will boot. Sounds like the mobo is the problem if you've verified the only parts.

I've read a dozen threads that say "just don't use the installer". Problem is, CP does not see my wireless network adapter, it's not there at all. It's there in DP, and in win7, and in vista. So I cannot do a fresh install, if I have any hope of having it work on CP, and I'm not even sure that will work. I can't do an "upgrade" when booting from the win8 cd, it says restart and use the installer, when i try to upgrade from both win7 and DP. As it's only 800mhz, I need to find a way to bypass the system requirements, but I can't figure out how. I'm hoping someone else has, since it's my only way.

A:Installing with the installer and less than the minimum requirements

Firstly, you need to use the Release Preview, as that will probably get your wireless adapter working. I had the same thing with the CP, my new adapter didn't work and I couldn't use the metro IE 10 and had to use 7 to get it working. The Release Preview had it going like it was a native device, very impeccable!

Also, could you share your PCs specs? As in, is it a desktop, netbook, or a laptop. And when you boot from the CD, can you specify step by step what you do and what happens? Help me to help you.

I wouldn't fret too much about the 800 MHz processor and not meeting spec. I would worry if you don't have the appropriate screen resolution to use the metro apps. I once installed Windows 7 in a Virtual Machine running at 800 MHz using a single core, 128 MB of RAM, 8 MB of Video RAM, 8 gigs of hard drive space and everything ran fine, even the Aero transparency. Windows is a very adaptable piece of software, the system requirements are there so new PCs can deliver a consistent user experience.

I have an HP Pavilion G6, which I upgraded to Windows 8. Here are the specs for the system:

HP Pavilion g6-1c74ca Notebook PC Product Specifications | HP? Support

When I upgraded I noticed some fps (frames per second) drop and ping rise on one of my favourite games, Ace of Spades. This game is remarkably simple, and as the developers put it "your grandmother's rig could run this game". Before the upgrade, the game ran fine. After, the fps decrease and ping increase led me to believe the graphics(fps)/network(ping) drivers might be to blame, so I went to the HP site to download the updated Windows 8 graphics and network drivers, link here:

Software & Driver Downloads HP Pavilion g6-1c74ca Notebook PC | HP? Support

When I tried to install them, I got this message for both:
"this computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing the software"

2 questions:
1) Why would hp supply a driver on its sight that can't be installed on the system that has a page of these drivers dedicated to it?
2) I did some googleing into possible causes. One possibility was not having the right .NET framework installed. I checked, and do have the correct version. I also updated my BIOS, in case that was the culprit. What might be the problem here?

A:this computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing...

There are two sets of drivers available at the link that you provide: one for machines with only the Intel graphics, the other for systems with switchable Intel/AMD graphics. You'd lose a lot of graphics performance if you had a switchable system and only had the Intel drivers installed.

I see no clear indication on the page as to which machines have the switchable package.

If you know that you have the switchable graphics option, I suggest uninstalling the Intel graphics drivers, and installing the AMD package (which is also supposed to include Intel drivers).

I have no personal experience with switchable graphics, so I haven't faced that issue. I don't know how to tell for sure whether the AMD controller is present. (Device manager?) Let us know whether it works out.

So, I just put in my new Nvidia GeForce 8500 GT and booted up a game, just to check out the framerate (which was awesome). After about 20 minutes, I glanced at the box my card game in, and though "Crap, forgot to check my PSU." So, I popped open my case and found that my PSU is 305 Watts - my graphics card says its minimum is "350 Watt or greater power supply."

First, yes, I am going to get a 400 Watt PSU within 2 months (hopefully).

So, the question is: What happens if my PSU does not meet the minimum requirements for my graphics card (its low by 45 Watts)? I've tried to do my research and find out for myself, but I've seen answers go from "Oh, its just not the best thing to do - its okay though," to "You will burn in a fiery hell-storm and God Himself will crush your computer."

And if you want to look like a real professional get the USB Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Video Editor. And I highly suggest a TV Tuner.

Looking at your current spec, that's pushing it a bit for min. spec to run Vista - for Home Basic (no Aero Glass) you're looking at 512MB, Home Premium 1GB on the RAM front. What graphics card do you have? If it's onboard, go out and buy a graphics card with at least 128MB of RAM. Once you've upped your RAM, you'll notice a considerable performance increase!

What is the actual video driver file you downloaded? Did your 530 come with XP or did you install XP yourself?  If your 530 came with Vista, for example, then the Dell download listing based on your sevice tag will have Vista drivers.   Also what video is installed in your 530.  If you don't know, download the free Belarc Advisor and run that and it will list what Video you have.   www.belarc.com

So I just re installed windows 7 on my system. I have done this several times before, and I had a package of drivers which I would always use in the same order. In the past I have had no issues with this, it all worked smoothly. This time however, I have been plagued with blue screens and errors.

Among these is an issue with the Intel Graphics drivers. When I attempt to run the Intel Graphics installers, both straight from Intel, and from my motherboard manufacturer, I get an error "This computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing the software". I am using the 64 bit version to go with my 64 bit OEM version of 7 professional, and I am using the HD4000 drivers for my ivybridge 3770k. The latest version I tried and failed with was Driver Revision:, the latest on Intel's site. My other specs can be seen in my sig.

I have spent some time Googling for answers, but they generally involve solutions like "Uninstall your current version and re install the 64 bit version for your OS", but I haven't got a version already installed, and I am already trying to install the 64 bit version. Or "You aren't using the right version of the drivers", but I am virtually certain I am using the right version, unless I've forgotten which CPU I have.....which I haven't.

Has anyone else ever experienced and solved this issue, or does anyone know a possible solution?

I've purchased a Radeon HD 5450 graphics card for my desktop PC. It currently has a 220W PSU. Now, the Radeon packaging and manual suggests a minimum power supply of 400W. Research from reliable sources indicates that the card only uses 19.1W, however, so is upgrading my PSU 180+ W really worth it for a card that only draws 19.1W during typical use?

Also, if the card really does need a 400W PSU, what would happen if I were to run it on a lower-end PSU? Would I just not reap all the benefits of the card, or could the card / my system be possibly damaged?

Thanks for the help.

I am looking for a nice decent stable laptop that i can if possible run Windows and Linux on. I am also considering doing the Mac OS X on there but not sure. Ive never used OS X or rather any mac before but i am after all a Geek and need to know how to use them. Price Range: as low as i can. its not going to be a power pc or anything just something to get me through the day, possibly doing some Wireless Security Checking for clients and general things like typing and such. Any laptops that dont break down so bad over time? For instance: My sister purchased a compaq 2 years ago. so far she has had, A Failure, DVD drive failure, Screen failure, and keyboard failure. Anything anyone can suggest. Pretty much any software issues i can easily take care of myself so i dont really need the tech support i just NEEd FAST hardware repairs if the computer breaks down. Apple i hear makes a nice pc. probably a grand is my max price just doing some browsing. Or i plan on just getting a desktop i build from scratch which will do about 5 times the power as any laptop i can get for the same price, more stability, but no portability. The whole idea of carrying a small laptop around would be nice.

they do make very small factor boxes these days
I have a HP dv5094ea - excellent machine and great value for money given the spec
1GB memory

but it is a HP which meged with compaq 4 years ago...

I'm in the market for a new 15.6 laptop. Iíve been testing one of the new Acer models and it appears to be the best bang for the buck. It comes with a multitude of features including at least 4G Ram, 350G HD, Four (4) USB ports, HDMI, Modem, Card reader, Video, audio, microphone inputs, 8 X DVD, Web Cam, Windows 7, Intel Processor, etc, etc., for about $650 at Costco. The only downside I see is the terrible Acer support. Doesn't seem they have much interest in supporting their products. Their English is very difficult to understand and they are quick to hang up. Costco is the big plus. Two year warranty support and 90 days full refund if you are not satisfied. I'm not familiar with Acer at all and need some opinions. Does anyone have an opinion about Acer and please let me know what other brands you would recommend that can match up with these features and price?

I am purchasing new laptop. I am tired with boot speed & performance of SATA drives & want to go with SSD.

Currently, I am comparing
XPS 17 Laptop - Feel the Thrill with 3D Laptop Screen | Dell
XPS 15z Laptop Details | Dell
Premium Laptop, Professional Audio Laptop | HP Envy

My requirements are

-> Slim & Stylish
-> SSD drives for OS & Sata for data
-> Long battery life
-> Shouldn't more than 7-8 lbs

Remaining things like Processor, RAM etc any thing will work from Core i7 range & 8GB will be good. Not high end gaming cards, just normal will work. I don't want any heating & rebooting issues.

I hope someone will help to choose some good laptop.

BUDGET is not an issue.

Waiting for some responses.

Well given the three choices I would automatically lean toward the HP. I have a grudge against Dell, they don't stand behind their products and their tech support is hopelessly useless. I've had good luck with the HP machines I've worked with. I currently run an Acer *See my system specs. that has been great. They just released a bunch of second gen iCore powered machines, might be worth a look.

I'm not sure if I'm on the right board or not, but I'm giving this a go.

I have a superb desktop but recently a need has arose for a laptop. I need something rather cheap, my expenses are up right now and I can't really go over $500, (I know, not many good ones that cheap)

My only requirements (other than the standard stuff) is the ability to smoothly run all Adobe CS2 applications (not simultaneously), would you say any of these computers could handle it?

Ok, I'm looking for a laptop under 2000$ that is powerful (um, something above 2.8ghz that's not a celeron), upgradable (that is in graphics card and up to 2gigs of ram) plus a case that looks cool (kinda like the alienware laptops). I've seen the new AMD 64's for only 1,600$ but they don't have nifty cases. Any ideas my dear friends?
