Clarification of running Disk Defragmenter remotely using PsExec

Q: Clarification of running Disk Defragmenter remotely using PsExec

Hi there,
As described in the following link on how to run a disk defragment using Disk Defragmenter via PsExec http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/how-to-run-disk-defragmenter-on-a-remote-computer/,
would you say that all parameters mentioned by the author in the blog are applicable? If not, please could you specify which parameters aren't needed in order for me achieve this task efficiently, I've been trying to understand all the parameters for PsExec
and from what I can understand I don't think parameters -s and -f are applicable as mentioned in
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/sysinternals/bb897553.aspx. Reason why I say this is that when you when specify parameter -s (using system account) in the command and log on as a
user of that remote computer in which I've been using Remote Desktop to achieve this as well as Command Prompt, the prompt comes up with "Disk Defragmenter exited with error code 0" straightaway when logging on and logging off as that user on the
remote computer, the same also applies when logging off as that user on the remote computer when running the command when being logged on as that user whereas if you don't specify parameter -s the message is delayed for longer which is what I would expect,
I'm assuming error code 0 means that the task has completed successfully as mentioned in the following link
http://aumha.org/a/defragerr.htm. Another reason as to why I don't think parameter -f is needed is that the program (Disk Defragmenter) will already be on the remote computer and won't require copying it over.
Your help would be much appreciated.
Kind regards,
RocknRollTim
P.S. I have been alternating with the command on several computers with Windows XP and Windows 7 using both of my Windows XP and Windows 7 64-bit computers and have proven very interesting in which the command works on computers that don't have SSD drives
and have SATA drives and might not require defragmenting as they are optimised, some Windows 7 64-bit computers flag up an issue as well as the odd computer that has Windows XP installed and have tried with both of my computers and keep getting the following
message "PsExec could not start c:\windows\system32\defrag.exe on <RemotePC>: No process is on the other end of the pipe.", I suspect it is something to do with Disk Defragmenter not working on this computer as I aware that it is not launching
and still trying to find a fix for this i.e. non of the buttons correspond in the GUI, I expect this message when trying to run the command to a remote computer that has Windows XP installed from a computer that has Windows 7 64-bit and a Windows XP computer
to a Windows 7 64-bit computer.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello all, I have a question about setting up Remote Desktop on PCs in our company. For most of the PCs on our network Remote Desktop is disabled by decree of the management. When I do need access to a machine I'll use psexec to enable the service then I'll disable it when I'm done. Some of the PCs are accessed by normal (non-admin) users on the network using Remote Desktop - we're looking for a way to remotely edit the list of users that can access the PCs that way - it'll be one specific user allowed per machine so a group policy doesn't seem to be the right way to go... Basically I'm looking for a way to remotely edit a machine's local secpol, specifically the "Allow logon through terminal services" setting.
I found this MS article http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb457125.aspx that mentions the SeNetworkLogonRight but I don't see that in the registry... I must be missing something stupid here - there has to be an easy way to do what I'm trying to do... Does anyone know what that easy way is?
This is the command I use to enable remote desktop - it seems like something similar could be used to edit the userlist? Argh!
psexec \\machine reg add "hklm\system\currentcontrolset\control\terminal server" /f /v fDenyTSConnections /t REG_DWORD /d 0

-Oh, it's an Active Directory Domain, all the PCs are WinXP - Thanks!

Hi,
We are unable to take backup of "Favorites","Desktop" folders in a user profile when scanstate is run remotely using "Psexec \\computername -s scanstate.exe /ue:*\* /ui:domain\user /i:miguser.xml /config:config.xml /c" command.
These folders are redirected to a shared folder on a server and when we try to see the folders by using UNC path(\\computername\c$\users\username) on the user's machine they dont appear under user profile. Even though "Documents" are redirected,
we are able to take backup of the "Documents" folder.
However, when scanstate is run locally on the system, all folders are backedup to usmt.mig file. We are using "miguser.xml" and "Config.xml" for scanstate, since we need backup of "Documents","Desktop" and "Favorites"
only. After searching over internet, we doubt that, this behavior has got something to do with "Shell Folders" and "User Shell Folders" in the registry under "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Currentversion\explorer\shell folders",
where paths to all user profile related folders information is stored. We dont find "Documents" folder there, may be thats the reason why we are able to take backup of only "My Documents" and not the rest of the folders (Favorites,Desktop).

Well, I have tried multiple times to have Disk Defragmenter to run on a schedule, but it never seems to run. It will only run if I start it manually. The last run was a manual one that I ran that day. the scheduled runs have never worked for this. (It did use to say a date in 2008 for the enxt scan I believe, until I tried to reset the schedule again. It has never worked.) The day the picture was saved is 9/7/10(today).Uploaded with ImageShack.us

A:Disk Defragmenter not running on schedule

Hello and welcome to Bllepingcomputer.

I do not know what all the settings are in your scheduled defrag, but keep in mind of two things.

1. Disk defragger will not run if the system is in use, I know there is an option that prevents it from running if the system is in use.
2. The computer has to be on and running at the scheduled time you have set for defragger to run.

I have a dell dimension 8400 2.5 GB memory that I ran cleanup utilities on several weeks ago- specifically the disk defragmenter.. I left it running without sitting in front of the computer. Anyway, Later when I tried to restart the computer. I got a blue screen with system memory failure messages. Well I just left this alone thinking I needed to replace some older memory cards. I have two 1GB memory cards installed and two 256 GB memory cards installed which are very old - came with the computer. Because of the holidays, I just left it alone and turned off for a week. Today, I thought I would just turn it on and see what happens. Now, I get the BSOD with a stop error: STOP 0x00000024 (0x00190203, 0x8AD8A9F8, 0xC0000102, 0x00000000) and nothing concerning any system memory failures now. I have tried to reboot in safe mode, but no such luck.

As noted above, everytime I try to click it the black box pops up quickly and disappears and the computer does not respond at all, I mean I can do other things but Defrag does not pop up at all. Now I recently had a hardware failure on one of the hard drives, so I replaced both hard drives that were previously installed and installed Recovery CD on a new hard drive and the drive reads in the Device Manager. As I looked at other threads, people said it could be malware, but I do have Trend Micro Anti-Virus updated and Spy Sweeper updated to date. If anyone can help, would be much appriciated.

I recently checked how much free space I had remaining on my "C" drive and found that I only had 9.68GB left out of a total capacity of 222GB. I ran Windows Disk Defragmenter but after 18 hours it was still running so I cancelled it.  On re-checking my hard drive I found to my amazement that  I now had 42.8GB of free space!  I then downloaded the free Auslogics disk defragmenter and ran that.  It completed in a few minutes and showed that the Windows defrag had done most of the work but for some reason had failed to finish.

I am very surprised that the process of defragging freed up so much space.  On consulting various forums, most peoples' experience seems to have been the exact opposite.  The common consensus seems to be that defragging reduces the amount of free space on a disk rather than increasing it. Why was my experience so different?

I suspect it may be because I had used up too much of my free space than I should have.  I was down to just over 4% before I defragged.  Was that too little?  How much free space should I leave unused to ensure my pc is running properly?

I would be grateful for any assistance that members of this forum can give me.

A:Running Disk Defragmenter has freed up over 30GB of free space!

Are you sure it was the disk defragmenter that you ran, and not the disk cleanup tool?

All defragmenting, (aka 'defragging') does is to re-organise your files into contiguous blocks so they can be loaded faster.  That's contiguous from a disk drive point of view, so they can be loaded quicker.  As an aside, never run defrag on an SSD: it will not improve matters at all but will waste precious write cycles of your SSD, resulting in it wearing out sooner.

Because defragging only re-organises files, it will not free up disk space.  It will require some space to do its work, resulting in higher disk usage until it has finished.

The only thing I would suggest is running disk cleanup (or another good cleanup tool such as Ccleaner) prior to running defrag, as defrag will otherwise waste time re-organising your temporary files as well as your permanent ones.

Freeing up 30GB is a heck of a lot of disk space ... are you sure nothing you need has been removed somehow?  I only ever get that kind of space back if I move a barge full of stuff to another drive or perform maintenance on a large database that has shrunk massively without freeing up the space it occupies.

I went to open up Disk Defragmenter today and it gave me this error:

"Disk Defragmenter cannot start because the task scheduler service is not running. Start the task scheduler service and try again."

I went into services.msc and Task Scheduler was already running. I thought about restarting the service but the option is greyed out. I rebooted my PC several times and opened the Task Scheduler program, but neither helped.

This is definitely a first, I usually defragment about once a month...

I am not in the habit of running Windows Disk Defragmenter very often, but over the last few weeks I have been going through the process of importing my very large cd collection on to iTunes. My "C" Drive has a capacity of 222GB and I was down to 9.68GB of free space. I ran WDD but after 18 hours it had still not finished! I therefore decided to cancel the defrag, and after checking the capacity of my "C" drive, I found to my amazement that I now had 42.8GB of free space! A:Running Disk Defragmenter has freed up over 30GB of free space!

I have not yet had any replies to my post so I thought I would add some further information. Before running Windows defrag' I performed a disc cleanup. This did not clear many files as I regularly use CCleaner to clear my temporary files, internet history and cookies etc. However, I am careful never to use the Registry part of CCleaner as I have been advised before not to use it.

Someone on another forum suggested that the increase in free space I experienced could be due to the fact that, because I had so little free space left on my hard drive before I commenced the defrag, the Windows defrag unintentionally caused restore points to be deleted. Do you think this is the likely cause for my dramatic increase in free space?

Why does Windows require a certain percentage of free space to function? And, does the amount of free space required vary depending on what version of the operating system one is running? For example, does Windows 8 require the same percentage of free space as Vista?

Hi, I've tried a lot of things but nothing is working, I would greatly appreciate any help. About two months ago a blue screen would come up and then shut my computer down, which I've been able to work around. Now, not sure if it's connected, but it's not reading my cd drive (won't eject or read it in my burner), disk defragmenter says "Disk Defragmenter could not start", and check disk says "Windows was unable to complete the disk check." I've tried some things I've found on the web including running check disk from cmd which ran but didn't change anything; the volume came back not dirty, and I checked the logical manager and all in the services section. Thank you for your time.

Click the link in my signature and under step 4 download the zip file and extract the shortcuts.

When you click them they open a cmd window, dont close that window. Be patient that window will dissapear by itself. These advanced shortcuts are the best free defraggers there are. To get better you would need to buy something like PerfectDisk, so dont bother with defraggler etc...

EDIT: forgot to say to get checkdisk to work, click on the vista start orb and type regedit in the search field and hit enter. Next navigate to this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Man

On the right hand pane you should see BootExecute right click on it and select Modify then past this in:

autocheck autochk /r \??\C:
PDBoot.exe
autocheck autochk *

Then click on OK and exit regedit. Then restart your pc.

So I have a Windows 7 Toshiba laptop and I use the default defragmenter to help clean my computer. There are 2 disks that it can defragment:

(C: ) and
System

Beside each of them shows the last time they were last looked at and how fragmented they are. It says that 2% of System is fragmented, but when I select the "Defragment disk" button, it says something underneath the Progess column, but it goes by so fast I can't read it and it doesn't defragment the disk.

What should I do to fix this? Or does it even need to be dealt with at all?

A:Disk Defragmenter won't defragment a certian disk.

Sounds like you are trying to defrag system reserved partition, this is a very small partition reserved on the HDD with your boot info and some windows recovery options in there hence why there is no drive letter assigned to it, if this is the case its best left well alone, it should only be 100MB in size and defragalyzing it will do nothing, and if you frag it up your comp wont boot

If your not sure or dont understand post a snip of your disk management window
Start>diskmgmt.msc

Hi! When you do a Defrag, you are organizing your files on your hard drive. Disk defrag put all those chunks of data together so next time you access that data the process will be much faster. If you wanna free up disk space, go to My Computer, make a right click on your hard drive letter-Properties and under the "General" tab click "Disk Cleanup" button. Or you can download this utility: CC Cleaner; it's free. Hope that helps. Ciao!

I some how deleted the build-in disk defragmenter that comes with WinXP by accident. How do i bring it back? Whenever i click on defragmentation (right click C: > properties > tools > defrag) It says:

Disk defragmenter is not installed in your cmputer. To install, double-click Add/Remove program at Control Panel, click Install/Uninstall tab and follow teh instructions n the screen

There is no Install/Uninstall tab. I tried Add/Remove Windows component but i cant find the defragmenter.

Any ideas? Oh ya, and any other better defragmenter that you guys could recommend?

Thanks in advance

There are two third party defragment programs that come to mind: Perfect Disk and Disk Keeper, some people like Perfect Disk others like Disk Keeper. I use and prefer Perfect Disk myself.
http://www.raxco.com/products/perfectdisk2k/

http://www.lyonware.co.uk/Diskeeper.htm

Unfortunately I do not have any bright ideas on how to restore/replace the defragment tools that comes with the operating system. You could try system file check, not sure it will help though: Click Start > Run > type 'sfc /scannow' without quotes put the XP cd in the cd-rom.

Hello,

I have tried to use the windows defragmenter and disk keeper to defragment my files,

Both of them says it is done but my hardrive is still heavily defragmented...

Does anyone know of a program which actually 100% completes a defragment?
(possibly free)

i was trying to rearrange items on my hare disk to make programs run faster and when i try to defrag i get this message. disk defragmenter has detected that chkdsk is scheduled to run on the volume: HP_PAVILLION ©
please run chkdsk/f.
I dont know how or when i got this i think within the last week. is this bad or good?

A:disk defragmenter

Start/Run...type chkdsk /r (space between k and /) and hit Enter.

Type Y in response to onscreen query/statement and hit Enter.

Reboot the system and let the chkdsk execute, it will boot into XP when finished.

I hope this is an easy fix......my windows defragmenter will not do anything. It loads up fine but if I click analyze or defragment nothing happens and all I can do is close it. Does the defragmenter use a specific service that I may have turned off? I'm hoping this is all it is because I don't get any windows errors or anything when I try to use it.

Defragmentation is complete for: (C

Some files on this volume could not be defragmented.
Please check the defragmentation report for the list of these files.

And I attached the report. Why can't it defrag some files?

Try downloading TuneUP Utilities 2009, it includes the defragmenter and is free though for 30 days and does a excellent job, award winning software. I don't use the windows vista based defrag since it instead of freeing up space, it seems to take it away. For ex: you might have 40Gb free space, after running dfefrag, you may be left with 25Gb free space.

Hi guys, me back again. I'm running windows 98 on my IBM Thinkpad Laptop. Used disk defragmenter last week and it ran as normal. Yesterday and today however, even after 5 hours, it is still flitting backwards and forwards between 0 and 1% of disk checking. Nothing has changed, to my knowledge, so can't work out why or how to give it a proverbial kick in the bytes.

Any clues or tips greatly appreciated.

my problem is that recently my computer cannot run the disk defragmenter on my drive F(they said that i have to run the scandisk, and I did BUT NOTHING'S HAPPENED).that's not all, eveytime I boot on the computer, there will be a message telling me that "one of your disk have to be checked for consistency" than the conputer will scan disk automatically. how am i going to overcome this problem?

A:cannot run disk defragmenter(xp)

run
chkdsk /r
how full is your hard drive, defrg needs space to move things around in,if it is nearly full you need to do a disk cleanup to make room for it to work
for the starting each time you boot up
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=316506
and do you defrag on a regular basis

What exactly does defragging a drive do? I try to do it like once a month, is that too much?, too less?

A:Disk Defragmenter

It basically moves everything so it is in order and towards the front of the drive.
Helps speed up access a little.
Once a month is fine.

A:can't run disk defragmenter

Sometimes I have been in a similar situation, where I attempted to run Disk Defragmenter and it stops mid-process and says that it cannot continue. I do not recall the exact wording, but the message I received was also either about file/folder corruption, or some kind of disk error, or the volume being dirty, and it would advise me to run CHKDSK to fix that problem before it would let me defragment.I would check if C: is being recognized as being "dirty" - I don't know your level of computer knowledge (though I'm not an expert), so forgive me if I state things too basicly:On the Start menu, there should be a "Run" button; click that. Alternately, it can be accessed through holding the Windows key on the keyboard and then pressing the R button. After the Run box appears, in the white box after Open:, type "cmd" (without quotation marks) and press Enter (or click OK).This should bring up the command prompt box. Type "fsutil dirty query C:" (C doesn't have to be capitalized) and press Enter. This command does not change or activate or set anything; it asks whether the C: drive has been marked as "dirty" and should either output something like "Volume - C: is NOT dirty" or "Volume - C: IS dirty", though the capitalization (etc). may be a bit different. If C: is not said to be dirty, than it's not the situation I've experienced before, and don't know anything else about what you should do.... I've already used DisKeeper Lite, so I can't use it again.
