I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,
I picked up this Alienware 5700 off ebay to hopefully refurbish for my son but I'm new at this and still learning and so this thing has me baffled. The laptop is in pristine condition but shows no signs of life. When I plug in the power supply the green light on the power supply goes from solid green to blinking rapidly to the point you can barely see it. To me that would mean a short somewhere right ? If so where ? Has anyone else ever had experience with something like this ? I just don't want to go buying a new battery for a laptop that maybe fried already. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:No power, no lights but green light on power supply blinks rapidly

Remove the laptops battery and try the AC power only. If the green light does the same, it still could only be a bad AC adapter, or at worst, a shorted laptop motherboard

Hello, I have a ProBook 640 G1 that will not power on. After pressing the power button, with a battery installed and the AC adapter attached, the Charging LED blinks white 9 times . Unplugging the AC adapter results in 9 amber blinks. The light on the AC Adapter itself remains solid green. With the battery removed, and attached to the AC Adapter, three lights blink continously : The light on the power button (white), the Charging LED (AMBER), and the Power LED (White). The light on the AC Adapter itself remain solid green. In both cases pressing or pressing and holding the power button has no effect. There is no indication that power is actually making in to the MB; no BIOS , nothing at all. I do not have access to another unit with the same battery or AC adapter in order to try swapping those out. Thanks,Shane

I replaced the battery with a new Duracell battery yesterday.  I need to charge at least 4 hours first then discharge it.  When charging the light is usually amber, but after about 1 hour into the charge it begins blinking and the color changes to white.  This is the second battery.  It did almost the same thing with the other one, but the charging indicator also read incorrectly.  What can I do to correct this? Thanks

We've sent a support email to HP about this, but I'm hoping someone here might have some insight as well. My HP Pavilion dv9700 laptop died suddenly while I was using it, and I have been unable to get it to power on since. I've tried everything I can think of to bring it back to life. Any ideas what might be the cause of the problem? With the battery seated, whether or not the laptop is connected to AC power, pressing the power button causes the Battery LED (lightning bolt) to blink 3 times, and then nothing. Pressing either of the QuickPlay buttons (which would normally power it up) causes the same 3-blink result. If the laptop is connected to AC power, the ring around the power connector lights up. This is the only other response the machine shows to any action.I've tried a Hard Reset (removing AC and battery, then holding the power button for 30+ seconds), unfortunately nothing changed. I've also reseated the hard drives and memory modules, and tried booting with each of the memory modules alone, in turn. No change.Thinking the problem might be a faulty power adapter (as reported by another dv9700 owner with this problem), I purchased a brand new "HP NOTEBOOK 90W SMART AC ADAPTER" (p/n KG298AA#ABA) and tried using it to power the laptop. No change, still the same 3-blink response when I attempt to turn it on.When I remove the battery completely and attempt to turn the laptop on (connected to AC power), nothing happens at all -- not even the 3-blink response from the Bat... I thought others might be interested in how things turned out with this laptop. HP was nice enough to get back to us regarding the issue, however since the unit isn't under warranty it would have been a $400 repair to have them fix it. We then took it to a local shop (here in NYC), who for a $40 evaluation charge were able to determine that the problem was with the AC circuitry -- the laptop _would_ actually run off of a charged battery, but for some reason wasn't able to charge the battery, nor to run off of AC power. Of course, since we had no way of charging our battery other than in the laptop, this information wasn't much help to us. They offered to repair it by replacing the entire motherboard, which would have cost nearly $300. We decided not to go that route. My colleague then found an eBay listing for repair services from Florida Motherboard Specialists, down in Miami, FL. They advertised repair service on any motherboard sent to them, at very reasonable prices. So, with some trepidation, we removed the motherboard from the unit, packaged it up securely, and shipped it down to Miami. (The shop was willing to take the entire laptop, but they charge an extra fee if they have to do the motherboard extraction & reinstallation themselves.) Well, I can't say enough good things about Florida Motherboard Specialists' service! They had the motherboard turned around amazingly fast -- I think it was out of our hands for just over a week, and I shipped it down... Read more

Hello,

I have one of the newer model Dell Inspirion laptops. How do I turn off the light that accompanies the power button and the charge light on the front. I'm able to turn off my backlit keyboard, but these two other lights are quite bright and annoying when I'm trying to play movies in a dark room.

A:Laptop lights (power/charging) - Dell Inspiron

Hi DELLUSER16486,
What is the exact system model?
The power led and the leds on front are also used as diagnostic indicators. If there is any hardware issue on the machine, these leds help isolate the source of the issue. Hence, there is no way to disable the leds from turning on, as they would be connected to a cable soldered to the motherboard.
Download the service manual / specifications for a better understanding of the machine - http://dell.to/1n3X2po - enter the service tag and download it from the Manual section.
Write me a private conversation with the service tag and your contact details(Name and Email) for case records.

Currently have a Lenovo W530 that won't turn on. Right before the laptop "died" I was doing work and it was plugged in and then it suddenly just turned off. When I plug the laptop in the charging indicator light does not turn on (nor do any lights). Here is what I've attempted:Removed the battery and unplug from power and hold the power button for a minute to dissipate any charge that may remain. Then I just plug in the charger and try to turn the laptop back onPurchased a new battery chargerIn both cases nothing has changed, it seems like the laptop is just dead. My next attempt would be to replace the CMOS battery but I feel like I should be getting some sort of response from the charge being plugged in, regardless whether or not it needs a new CMOS battery. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Greetings!  I acquired an HP Pavilion DV7-1240US laptop.  When the battery is connected to the laptop and the AC adapter is plugged in, the Battery LED blinks continuously in 1-second intervals.  When I take the battery out, the laptop will not power on at all.  I've done a hard reset of the laptop, I've checked the ram slot connections, removed and reseated the hard drive, and still cannot get the system to work.  When the battery is connected to the laptop, if I press the power button whilst the battery LED is lit up, the system will momentarily try to power up; all the quick-set keys on the strip at the top light up momentarily and it tries to cycle up, only to die as soon as the LED light blinks off.   Does anyone have any idea what could be the cause of this?? I should point out that the Caps-Lock and Num-Lock buttons are not blinking at all, and there are no beeping sounds to speak of, so I'm at a loss.   Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks!

Hi There I'm having a BIG problem with my 4th Gen X1 Carbon laptop. When it's on it seems to work fine but if I need to power it off or do a restart. When It tries to turn back on, the power light flashes once as does the function bar then it turns off. I have to wait at least 5 minutes before I can turn it back on. I have tried the diagnostic software and everything passes with the exception of the Fan. it says "Not Available". I'm unsure if the fan is grayed out by design or if that is where the problem could be. If anyone has come across this before please let me know. I have limited confidance it the system untill I can resolve this issue. Thank youRobert

The white LED next to the charger input flashes three times.I have tried performing a hard reset and updating the BIOS but it did not seem to help. The only thing that seem to help for a bit was unpluggin the battery cable, holding the power button for about 30 seconds and then plugging in the battery again. I charged the battery for a few minutes and it booted right up. Hi all, I recently purchased a 2nd hand Elitebook (Win 7 pro) and it worked fine for a few days until I ran Windows Update... the progress bar just hung and eventually I gave up and shut it down.  The next day the ongoing problem began where it does not power up at all - the power button led glows white continuosly and the battery (lightning bolt) led glows white with amber light blinking continuously. This happens as soon as battery is inserted and/or as soon as ac adaptor is plugged in, whether battery is in or not. The previous owner hasn't been all that helpful, saying it worked fine for months before (of course!) I've searched through all the HP support/forums and done the usual hard reset procedures/bios update/reseating ram/installed HP Support Assistant software/run off different ac adaptor/ and even ran the boot screen system tester which turned up clean - nothing has fixed this. To add to the confusion, leaving the machine rest for a day or two unpowered, enabled windows to boot up normally at times. It has booted up successfully only a few times though and another problem has since developed where the built-in keyboard no longer works - most keys are dead, a few activate 3 letters at once (yet plugging in a usb keyboard works ok!) For most recent attempts at startup (the few times it does get past the static/blinking leds) ... For some reason my laptop once stopped charging, I tried a few different outlets at a library and non of them made the laptop start charging again (charging = organge light glowing). I got home, and my outlets there didn't work either. THen after a while I tried an outlet again, and it worked. Then this problem occured one more time (then I fixed it somehow). And the last time it occured  I haven't been able to fix it. Trust me I've tried almost everything, I tried turnign it off taking the battery out and holding the powere button then trying to charge it, I tried waiting for hours, but  have not tried a new charger.  So here is the problem I see: I plug in the charger, and the charging LED does not glow, instead it randomly (it seems random) blinks.  I once left my laptop to do that for hours, and it still didn't even charge. Also I can't turn on my laptop without the battery (not sure if thats even possible, as I have not heard it is possible).  I'm going to send it back to Costco soon, but before I do, please help me figure out how to fix it, thanks

I have seen other solutions recommending updating the BIOS driver to fix the problem. The catch is TO UPDATE THE BIOS DRIVER I NEED AT LEAST 10% BATTERY POWER which I obviously don't have because I cannot charge the battery.
Can someone please help?
Thanks.

Just replaced the battery in my XPS 1340 and found out I have charging issues. When I plug in a charger, Windows sees it but won't charge the old total depleted battery, instead, runs off ac power. Tried a different charger and a new battery with 30% charge but same results. As a last chance effort, I replaced the male prong power adapter in the computer. Now Windows doesn't see the charger and will not run on ac.
Is there something in the Bios that needs to be done to fix this or am I to assume it's a motherboard issue and retire this little workhorse.

Dead batteries cannot be charged. Remove the dead battery and try using just the original dell adapter that came with the laptop alone. You cannot use other models adapters or batteries.

I am having Inspiron-6400 (XP SP3) laptop. 2 years old. Suddenly I am getting the following message for the past two days:
"Your system will operate slower and the battery will not charge. Please connect a Dell 65W AC adapter or higher for best system operation."
That error message comes when I plug in the AC adapter to go to AC from battery.
It results in Battery not charging. That is a big problem. The tray-icon just shows 'On AC Power' and the 'Charging' indication does not appear any more.
A related message is also seen when I reboot the laptop, at the start itself. That message adds a suggestion by saying 'Try to reseat the power adapter'. Reseating it does not help. Though, a couple of times it helped. So I am not sure what this mechanical / reseating thing has to do with this error.
Overall, it is frustrating. It will be great if someone can help me with the exact solution for this, other than going to Dell requesting for paid-service support.

I hope someone here would helped me out in my problem. I bought my Toshiba Portege M900 last 2010. I would always plugin the charger to my laptop when I am at work.

There this one time that when I turned on my laptop, the battery was about to be empty like 7% remaining. I took my charger and plugged it in. After 5 seconds, it turned off without any warning or so.

I checked the lights in the laptop, the "charging light" is not ON despite that the charger was plugged in the socket. I tried to use the charger to my other Toshiba Sattelite Laptop and it worked.

I tried to remove the battery of the Toshiba Portege M900 Laptop from its place and plugged again the charger but still it did not turned ON.

So I took my Toshiba Portege M900 to the nearest service center. But surprisingly when I got there and related the problem to the technician, the laptop turned on after it was plugged. The technician said, he couldn't see any problems because the laptop was charging and it turned on right.

But when I took it home, whenever I remove the charger from the socket of the laptop, it would turn off immediately without any warning eventhough that battery is 100% charged.

And there were times, even if I remove the battery from the laptop but still plug the charger in.. the laptop will still NOT TURN ON.

I tried to check the Toshiba PC Health Monitor, but it would said that the battery is working good. What do you think seems to be the problem? Is it the bat... Read more

A:Portege M900: Power Problems Battery and Charging

> Is it the battery, or the power jack, or the motherboard or the charger

I don?t think its battery issue.
Why? Because the notebook does not power up even if the battery is removed but connected to AC adaptor.

_Power jack?_
Maybe. It could be possible that power jack or connection between the power jack and the motherboard isn?t ok.

_Motherboard?_
It could be an problem with power supply electronic which is part of the motherboard but once again; this is just an idea?

_Charger /AC adaptor?_
Hmm? you said that the AC adaptor has been tested with another notebook and it worked. So possibly it?s not AC adaptor issue.
But are you sure that the other notebook did not run at battery power?
Has the AC adaptor been tested properly? This is an open question.

Another idea:
What BIOS version do you have installed on M900?
Found an BIOS update for the Protege M900
+BIOS version 2.40 upgrade for Portege M900 and Satellite Pro U500( For PSU56*, PSU5C*, PSU5J*, PSU5Q*, PSU86*, PSU8G* and PSU53* ONLY)+
http://pc.toshiba-asia.com/support/drivers/details/30516

There you can find an detail about fixed issue:
+System may not power on without using AC Adapter after the battery has been detached and reattach again. This has been fixed.+

Please check if your Portege M900 is one of the mentioned models and check if an BIOS update is available for your unit.

after I installed the latest firmware update (2XCN38WW) for my Yoga 710-14ikb, the battery indicator is stuck at 50% regardless if on battery or plugged in. I cannot perform the discharge test because the PC turns of randomply and the charge test does nothing as the battery level is stuck at 50%. I tried reflashing the bios with 3 different images but every time I get the battery not detected message in the flash screen.  The pc is stuck at 50% battery and turns off randomply when not connected to AC. When I boot my Inspiron 15R-5537, I get this message:
"The AC adapter wattage and type cannot be determined. The battery may not charge. The system will adjust the performance to match the power available. Please connect a Dell 65W AC adapter or greater for the best system performance."
The AC adapter (it is a 90-watt AC adapter) does not charge the battery and the laptop keeps in low-power mode, it is, the CPU clock gets stuck at 780 MHz, while it can go up to 2,3 GHz in full power mode. When I say it doesn't charge the battery, I mean it starts charging for a while, and then the power LED turns off and the battery icon says  it's connected, but not charging. I've already bought a new 90-watt charger directly from Dell and it didn't fix the issue. When I use the battery alone, the CPU can get to 2,3 GHz just fine, meaning it isn't the battery either.
So I'm left with two options: it's either the DC jack, or the motherboard. From what I've read, this DC jack has a hole in the centre which receives the pin in the AC adapter connector, and this pin tells the laptop which is the wattage the power adapter can supply, which is 90 W for this laptop model.
Do you think replacing this jack can solve this issue, or is most likely a hardware issue with the motherboard?

This is what I'm talking about:

A:Battery not charging: is it DC power jack or motherboard fault?

The jack will be under $30, while a mainboard is $200+, so try the jack first.  If that doesn't solve the problem, it's the mainboard.

Hey like many others I'm having some issues with my FLEX 3-1580. Issue: The battery originally would not charge above 15%, now it will not charge above 14%. The battery light near the power button is on, and the charger works (tested with DMM). Sometimes I get a constant on and off between the computer detecting the power cord. This makes the screen flash back and forth in brightness going from plugged in to unplugged (This is remedied by disabling Microsoft AC Adapter in Device Manager, meaning it then stays "plugged in", still doesn't charge). If the battery is not plugged into the laptop it will start on AC Adapter after many attempts of 2 second boot/stop/boot/stop. Attempts: I have checked the voltages from the power cable internally to where it plugs into the board. The top two connectors get the 21V. The CMOS battery is at 3V. I reapplied thermal paste. I reset all connections. Looked for component burn marks but couldn't see any. I know other laptops have had issues with the MOSFETS but I could not find any MOSFET on the motherboard. Ran registry fixer with CCleaner. Updated all the drivers. Flashed newest BIOS In the end I don't know if its a software problem and something seriously got messed up by a virus in my registry or somthing.. Or if there is something on the motherboard that is bad.

Model CQ61 319WM This is a friend's computer.  Yes, it's old.  But, it was working fine until it went into sleep mode last night.  Hasn't come up since. Searches took me to this HP support page.  Win+B and Power on does not show the BIOS restore screen.  It just shows the same black screen.  It mentions trying more than once.  I tried at least a half dozen times.  Removed the battery and unplugged the power for a few seconds prior to some of the tries. The BIOS download (sp48895.exe) does not provide the option to format a USB drive as bootable.  I searched around and created my own bootable thumb drive.  Then, copied the BIOS files onto it. Unfortunately, that method also uses the Win+B and power on to bring up the boot order screen.  All I get is black. There are a bunch of "black screen" threads on here.  I've read several of them.  But, I haven't found any others that appear to apply to this model. Suggestions appreciated. Drake Christensen

I have had my Dell laptop for almost two years now. I replaced the battery before the warranty expired (1 year?). The battery was working fine, but I was starting to have to jerry-rig the angle of the power cord in the socket to charge the battery. I purchased a knock-off AC adapter replacement. I started getting error messages almost immediately when booting up that cord might not be compatible with the laptop. As it was working, I didn't worry about it. The power light start flashing in a particular pattern then, which it has been doing for months (three fast orange flashes and one long white flash). Historically, a white light has meant "charged" and an orange light has meant low power. The AC adapter became increasingly less efficient in charging the battery until it ceased to charge it at all. I purchased the Dell AC adapter recommended for the newest version of my laptop model. There was no noticeable change. (I understand from Dell that the problem may have been that I purchased a 90W adapter, compatible with newer versions of this model, but that I should have purchased a 65W adapter as my laptop is older.) I returned that adapter to Dell and then purchased a re-furbished Dell 65W AC adapter through Amazon. Again, no noticeable change. The battery is taking absolutely no charge from these cords. As I remove the power cord from the socket, the computer instantly shuts down.

When I hover over the battery icon, it says the battery is 0% charged and that ... Read more

Hi, the old girl is generally still going. My issue is now that when the x1 is powered up and plugged in it does not permanently recognize that the power cord is plugged in and alternates every second between battery power and cord power. As a result it does not charge sufficiently and runs out of battery at some point. When powered down and plugged in the battery charges over several hours and the laptop can be put back in use. The cord seems fine and the green light on the side of the computer when plugged in does not flicker.. Thanks for your ideas.

My ladyfriend is having battery problems with her HP ze4610 laptop running XP Home.
She keeps it plugged into the A/C wall outlet about 99% of the time, so shouldn't her battery be charged all the way when she uses it the other short 1% times that it is unplugged and running on battery? The computer is not that old, a year, maybe.

She said the other night while unplugged and doing some important work on it for a few short hours(2 or 3, maybe), a pop-up message came up saying it was shutting down from lack of power and to save her data, or it would be lost(which she LUCKILY was able to do before it shut down very quickly).

My question is....is there an utility on her HP that can tell her how well her on-board charger is functioning while the laptop is plugged in? (It must not be charging too well, and we'd like to know how well)
And tell her how much the battery is charged at times it is unplugged?

thanks,
jA

Hey

I've had this computer for less than 3 months and the battery as the title says has stopped recharging and unless the computer is connected to mains it won't stay on.
I've heard quite a few other people have the same issue, Did anyone find a solution?

I'm currently using a X260 and have a problem with it. I usually charge my laptop when I'm not using it i.e. I turn it off and then charge it. The problem is that I don't come to know what the battery percentage is, and to know that I have to switch it on and look at the battery status bar. I want to know if there is a way by which i can enable the light on the laptop to show that the laptop has charged even when the laptop is switched off.

HiI've just now replaced the battery of my ideapad z500 with a new one but it seems not chargin... My system is Windows 10. I've updated "Lenovo Energy Management Driver" (for win 8.1) and "Advanced Configuration and Power Management Interface (ACPI) Driver" (for Win 10) but when I've restarted the laptop the issue persist. The Windows 10 bar shown me this message: 0% and batteri not charging. When the laptop is turned off and the AC is plugged in I don't see the power button led light up like I remember (maybe I am not remembering well I don't know, but maybe it is usefull to diagnose the problem). Do you have any advice on what can I do to solve this issue?Thenks

My laptop has been distrubing since yesterday. Whenever I put in the power chord, the power light and battery light starts flashing together and the laptop does not charge. When I remove the chord, the flashing disapperas. Occassionally, it charges a little before going out again.  I tried using the laptop without the battery. It sometimes does not start and other times, it goes into the first few seconds of booting (the BIOS page) before going out again.  Do you guys know what this code indicates? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I've set the charging threshhold in Lenovo Vantage to 75/70. When plugged in and the battery percent remaining is between those numbers the Windows power and sleep settings use the "on battery" setting. The laptop should use the "on ac power" setting in that situation because charging will begin soon after the battery drains down to 70.

Dell Battery Charging Problem Complicated
Could be one of those “Mother Board” Fixes but how can we get to the bottom of this?
The question is what allows the computer to determine the adapter wattage and type?
What part can I buy and rework on the board? Honestly the computer works fine minus this part.
Something is telling the computer to not charge the battery. Regardless if HDD is in the computer. Its something hardware related.
Warranty just expired last week =(
Latitude E6530
Other working units used to  test and swap components with is E6520 and E6540
NOTE** All batteries used and cables used are factory and known to work with other latitude computers. Using extended battery + dell 130W and 90W power supply with original batteries over 78% health on dell diagnostics.
Dell diagnostics shows 100% but the current in the battery is 0. Meaning it isnt charging. Downgraded to the lowest firmware too from the highest and it didnt fix the issue.
When the PC is shut off with battery inside, inserting a power cable will turn on the battery charging indicator symbol light. After 1 second it will turn off. Same thing while the computer is running.
Upon Boot :
ALERT! AC power wattage and type cannot be determined. The battery may not charge. The system will adjust the performance to match the power available.

So, my issue that ive looked everywhere for a solution to is this.  I was about to give this laptop to someone and I reformatted the hard drive to clean it up before doing so.  After this I went to dells site and loaded up the drivers for this machine.  All is fine up till this point.  Then I updated the bios to the newest version a12, and all went fine.

Well, later that day I needed to unplug the laptop and go to a different room and It just turned off after I unplugged it.  It wouldnt turn on with battery power either.  Plugged it back in and it loads fine but the battery is stuck on 36 percent charge and says not charging.  Now im getting a message saying the battery needs to be replaced as well, which is *** because I know that the battery was working just fine before this day.  Not only that why wont a battery with 36 percent charge turn on the laptop?  Its got the flashing red battery symbol when powered on with the ac adapter but without the computer on, but still plugged in, the battery doesnt charge or have any lights.

I have already tried the uninstalling of the acpi trick, as well as the taking the battery out while its running, or taking it out purging the power and reseating.  Ive tried all the common tricks to no avail.  Not sure whats going on but I know this battery was good, and it still says 36 percent but wont charge and wont power the laptop on.  Hope someone can help.

Thanks Gary

A:DELL VOSTRO 3500 BATTERY ISSUE (not charging and wont power on computer with charge) HELP!

First check:  make sure the BIOS (F2 at powerup) recognizes the AC adapter.  If it does not, the battery will not charge.
If the AC adapter is not recognized, try another Dell OEM adapter.  If that doesn't solve the problem, replace the DC jack:
http://www.parts-people.com/index.php?action=item&id=9935
And if that doesn't solve the problem, replace the mainboard.
If the AC adapter IS recognized, but the battery will not charge, unplug the system, remove the battery and hold the power button for 30 sec.  Try again -- if the battery still won't charge, odds are the battery itself is bad.
If the battery is original to the system, it's about four years old - well past its expected lifespan.
