Fingerprint reader works briefly, then stops working

Q: Fingerprint reader works briefly, then stops working

I have a Lenovo Yoga 730-15. After setting up the fingerprint reader for sign-on in Windows 10, it will work for perhaps a day or two but then become intermittent and after maybe 3 days will stop working completely. After going into PC Settings and deleting and setting up a new fingerprint read, the same pattern: works for a day or two, then becomes intermittent, then stops. Cleaning the pad (with electronics wipes) and updating to the latest fingerprint reader driver have not resolved the problem. According to Lenovo System Update, all critical and recommended updates have been installed. Any suggestions?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I periodically have to reinstall the Fingerprint drivers to get the reader to be recognized & WORK. This time when trying to get the diagnostics, I get : ? Yes, but it's not in my Add/Remove options :  ? Then I get this:?  It's all a big black box with no,user visible, physical dialog.  I never know when an update/install is finished or locked. Waste more time waiting, not knowing if the task completed.  Yes, I can find out using rigmarole procedures that I SHOULD NOT have to do on a WORKSTATION.  I waste more time cajoling this system, then doing actual work. Question:  Anyone else have intermittent issues with the Figerprint Reader on a W540 using the latest Win 10??

Still trying to solve the Fingerpring Reader failure.  This time, even after reinstalling the reader, I see nothing.  No reader, or activity. Trying the Solution Center, all I see - stalled - just sits and stares at me: ? No activity notes, the logo just stays there, no [X] to close.  I have to do the Win command Alt-F4, and it closes but I have no idea if something is being written when closing.  Rebooted, checked the disk, tried again, same thing, just a pretty logo and a fingerprint reader that no longer works. Event Viewer tells me [Service Control Manager] event id 7000 error.  The error link to MS, just takes me to an infantile MS page telling me how great the Surface Pro 4 is.... no help screen as in the past. Note that I wasted more time testing  for Malware or Virus. System is clean, everything else works fine.

I am convinced that the fingerprint reader is fine. There must be some issue with the driver perhaps, something incompatible with a recent Windows 7 software update? The scenario:Laptop working fine.  I put it to sleep when I'm done and use the mousepad to wake it up.  The fingerprint reader LED will blink, and I can swipe my finger to log on.At some point, after a few times of putting laptop to sleep and waking up, the fingerprint reader does not respond.  No blinking LED.  I swipe my finger and the reader does not respond at all -- doesn't even tell me that there was a bad read.If I log off and log back on again, no change. However, if I do a reboot, everything is fine--the fingerprint reader is working again.   I have looked up time and time again for new drivers and installed.  Nothing seems to affect this scenario.   Unfortunately, this started happening about 9 months ago (estimated) and because of the sporadic nature of it, I just wasn't observant enough to know the "precise point" in time when it started happening.  My instincts tell me that there has been some kind of software/driver update along the way that is causing the fingerprint reader not to work right.  I would hope that HP continues a relationship with these fingerprint reader companies and can convey these kinds of issues so that a software update can be made.  But... I have no idea if it has been discontinued.  My laptop is still under warra... Read more

No problems, I completely got that I shouldn't bother with Simple Pass version 8.  I went ahead and installed version 6.  I still didn't get any joy, so I did a little more digging and found a later Validity Sensor driver, version 4.3.304 (not noted in the driver update list for my laptop model).  THIS WORKED.  I can now go into hibernate mode and the fingerprint reader remains funtional when the system is brought out of hibernation.  Previously it was pretty much guaranteed to become disabled.  So... seems like my problem is solved now.

have you tried the network diagnostic tool ? this can be activated when you launch IE explorer

when it shows that it cannot connect there should be a entry that shows diagnose network connections

also go to the control pannel open network connetions
here you should only have one connection to wich should be your (lan ) the others you can disable them

while you are here do a repair of your connection by right clicking the icon then repair /or in properties you will find the repair

then reboot

Recently changed mobo and cpu (from asus board and amd phenom to a gigabyte H87-HD3 and an I5 4670) and used sysprep to preserve my windows 7 installation

had a few hiccup on the way but its all working now
except for my main keyboard a Tt Meka mechanical keyboard which when i plug it in works fine for about 20-30 seconds and then stops

it has power as the lights remain on and if i plug my mouse or other keyboard into the usb slots on the meka keyboard they both work. Also if I put caps locks on in the keyboard that does work (an old apple usb keyboard) the other keyboard turns on its own caps locks so it is clearly recieving both power and data and is sending it too.

it has no specific drivers associated with it and i've reinstalled the intel usb drivers from the mobo website.

windows continues to recognise the keyboard right down to its brand and version, it shows up on my device &printers panel, but it just wont work. Under Device manager it is only a HID keyboard and in the USB cntrollers drop down it has a usb 2.0 MTT hub as its controller I think (it stops recieving power if I uninstall this)

Any ideas?
So far I've tried all my usb ports both 2.0 and 3.0, i've uninstalled and reinstalled the usb 3.0 drivers from gigabyte website, connected the keyboard via a portable usb hub
it's getting frustrating

Quick warning: while my reinstall was successful there were 2 hiccups

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate x64
Model: HP Pavilion dv7-6c95dx
Annoyance Level: Extreme

Okay, random weird problem that defies logic. I was busy doing stuff using Google Chrome (logged in on Facebook, trying to browse Newegg, etc.) and I tried logging in to my Newegg account using HP SimplePass, which uses the fingerprint reader technology to log you in to a bunch of different sites. However, this time around, Chrome crashed because HP SimplePass crashed.

I figured it would be best to reboot my system to clear out whatever was going on. However, upon rebooting, I get the "Device driver install yada yada" message that pops up, then it says driver installation failed. Going into device manager reveals that there is an unknown USB device attached (meaning, the fingerprint reader).

I've tried several times to install the driver for the fingerprint reader from HP (which originally had worked just fine). Now, it will not install. No amount of removing the driver and reinstalling it seems to be working, and I'm at my wits end. However, HP SimplePass installs just fine, but since it can't detect the fingerprint reader, it works by remembering typed passwords.

I'd rather NOT have to reinstall Windows if I can help it, but if anyone here has any suggestions that I could try to get this thing to work, that would be great. Thank you!

Hi guys, this is my first post here.I just bought an HP ENVY a week ago, and everything was working fine till I updated the fingerprint reader and now it isn't working anymore. I can't set up the login by Windows Hello, it always says that I'm not scanning properly and flashes with a red light, but the thing that worries me the most is that the light on the sensor turns on and off even when it's not supposed to. For example: I open a new tab on Chrome and it goes on and off for like two minutes. Yesterday it went on and off all the time. This obviously this drains out my battery, so I wonder what could I do to solve this. The problems started when I updated it. Thank you for your attention.

Hello, My notebook is an HP DV7T-6000 CTO Entertainment Notebook that I have upgraded to Windows 10 64 Bit.  The original operating system was Windows 7 Home and the fingerprint reader worked at that time.  After I upgraded to Win. 10 it had stopped working.  I tried to look for a solution but didn't have any luck.  I made an image of my notebook, about 6 months ago and saved it for a later time.  Some time after making the image, I found a way to make my fingerprint reader work again, but didn't save the instructions or the downloads for it.  I know, I'm beating my head against the wall.  Because of suspecious notebook behavior, I reloaded the image I saved and now I can't seem to find a way to make my fingerprint reader work again.  I do remember that it was an updated driver for my laptop that made the fingerprint scanner work again, but I don't remember what the updated version was.  If any of you could help, I will be truly greatfull.  Maybe, at some point, I can stop banging my head against the wall.   Thank you!

Hi dinomon, Welcome to SF,

Have you install proper drivers for your Finger Print Reader device. If not go to their website. Download the Lastest drives for Windows 7 then install it. See whether it works or not.

P.S. Please fill the System spec so we know what are we dealing with.

Hope this helps,

The issue only arises when logging into windows. Things I have tried-uninstalling/installing device in device manager and finger print manager pro software-setting fingerprints through both fingerprint manager pro software (lenovo) OR through the built in windows fingerprint control panel options-disabling "allow windows to turn off this device to save power" in device manager. I should note as well that I have another T540P that I ordered as a replacement. So here's the solution(s) as found by Pokey and me: Option 1:  Computer, Properties, Device Manager, Biometric Devices, Validity Sensors, Properties, and the Power Management tab, Uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power." Option 2:  Try disabling and enabling the "Credential Manager" service by going into Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services, Credentials Manager.  Even though the Credentials Manager status is ?Started,? stop the Credentials Manager service and restart it. Find more information here:  https://support.authentec.com/Forum/tabid/318/forumid/49/threadid/600/scope/posts/Default.aspx Option 3:  Do both.

This problem has been reported several times before, but no answer whatsoever  The fingerprint reader stopped working, apparently after a windows update upgrade I have tried EVERYTHING there is, from uninstalling and deleting the driver files then reinstalling, downgrading the drivers, rebooting, upgrading, updating chipset, video card and display drivers, updated BIOS, etc. etc. etc. and the best thing that can happen is for it to work a couple of times and stop working again... it is a less-than-a-month-old computer and it seems  MANY users are having this problem....I already ran Lenovo Diagnostics tool, Lenovo system update tool, Microsoft's windows update and have latest definitioins for everything, Microsoft trouble shooter recognizes the problem but can't fix it. the only thing I haven't tried is downgrading my windows 10 to a previous version... computer: Lenovo Ideapad Flex 5 Model 81C9Processor Intel Core 17-8550U @ 1.80GHzOperating system: Windows 10 Home 64-bit  Ver. 1803 Synaptics WBDI driver version: 5.5.2613.1050 Intel(R) UHD Graphics 620 ver. 23.20.16.4973 BIOS version 4QCN43WW(V2.07) Thanks for any help I can get to solve this annoying situation

Hello Lenovo team, I have a Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga 370 (20JH0023US) less than a year old, since we set it up out of the box, we have been unable to get the fingerprint reader to function. In Device Manager, it shows the device cannot start (Code 10). We have uninstalled, reinstalled with the latest drivers, performed a BIOS update. When we try to clear the Fingerprint data in the BIOS, it sits as "Resetting Fingerprint Data" and gets no further. We have also replaced the Fingerprint reader itself (under warranty) on the keyboard bezel and it is still not working. Can anyone assist in helping us get this working? Is it possible it's a bad factory image of Windows and maybe we should do a reset? Thanks in advance!

The FP reader does not work on my T450s under Windows 10, even though the drivers "Synaptics FP Sensors (WBF) (PID=0017)" are installed correctly.I can get into the Windows Hello Fingerprint Setup (snapshot below) but the FP reader doesn't do a thing.Following the steps suggested in Fingerprint-support-on-Windows-10-ThinkPad-T440-and-newer does not change anything. The notebook is brandnew and I didn't have Win 7 or 8 on it before for testing the FP reader, but the driver installed without any issues -- so I guess it's not a hardware problem. I'm happy for any suggestion.

Dear all, since a few days my fingerprint reader is not working anymore. The device manager shows the reader but says it's not working (Code 10). I deinstalled the driver and downloaded it again as well as all other updates via Lenovo Companion. Does anyone has an idea what to do? Thanks in advance.

Hi All, I recently (about a month ago) was one of the unlucky fellows who had microsoft sneak the windows 10 upgrade onto my W530 laptop. Long story short, everything seemed to be OK, with the occasional blip with the fingerprint reader when I had to manually enter my windows password. However, on a hard boot, the fingerprint reader always worked, which was critical as my computer has 2 passwords on start up that I do not remember and thus had always relied on a swipe of my finger.  Well that all changed yesterday. I was in windows when my computer crashed. Upon start up, i was immediately asked to enter in my supervisor/bios password without getting the chance to finger swipe. After multiple reboots, the same. The fingerprint reader wont turn on any more and I am locked out my my laptop.  Can anyone please help? anyway to get the fingerprint reader to switch back on???

The HDMI works, but now my fingerprint reader isnt responding. When trying to add or remove fingerprints in win10 settings... nothing happens. In form of no windows or program starts. No error in device manager, and Synaptics WBDI (SGX enabled) has no errors. Fingerprint reader is enabled in bios. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling drivers. Noe effect...
