Lenovo x230 Randomly Shutting down/ Loosing power- SOLVED! fix

Q: Lenovo x230 Randomly Shutting down/ Loosing power- SOLVED! fix

I saw few people have problem with this, It was **bleep** hard for me to find what was wrong with my laptop, It just lost its power (instant power-off) from time to time, It was like that for like a half a year, I couldn't figure what was wrong with it. It was totally clean inside and wasn't overheating ,ran all the tests- all was fine, battery also was fine, so is power supply and power module. The thing that fixed it- Was Changing CPU thermal compound, it had dried out really bad and was causing this gremlin.. Even though I didn't believe that it could be the problem because it didn't had overheating issues. Spent $1 on the compound from ebay and the laptop has been fine for over 2months now.In case anyone has the same problem or comes up when searching this post- that's the thing that will fix it even if it sounds weird.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a 4 year old Lenovo Thinkpad X230 computer.  Since I upgraded to Windows 10 (two years ago?) my computer has randomly shut off with no warning.  There doesn't seem to be a pattern with regard to when or how this happens.  The computer starts normally every time.  This can happen upwards of 5 or 6 times in an hour (although sometimes it can go several days without shutting off). In the last year (since June 2016), the computer has been evaluated by three different technicians on three different occasions (June, October, January).  Each found no hardware issues, no issues with fuzz/dust, no obvious software issues, no malware or other viruses.  Personally, I have explored the answer on the internet and fiddled with the settings relating to sleep mode (among other suggestions) and nothing seems to have worked.  I recently was advised to revert to the original windows 10, undoing all the updates and additional installations that I've put on the computer.  I did this, and miraculously it helped (although it still shut off twice since then.  This was in February).  In the last two weeks, I was forced to upgrade back to normal and the problem has returned.  Additionally, the first person who looked at my computer (back in June 2016), told me that this was aparently a common problem with Windows 10 and that the only way to fix it was to revert to Windows 8.   I would like to not have to do this, if poss... Hello! All of the sudden my Lenovo stopped turning on. After plugging in the adapter the battery icon at the back flashes green a few times then turns off. Also, around 10-15second after plugging in the adapter power button reacts to me pressing it ( green led light while I press it) but after that time it stops reacting to anything. It won't turn on either. Please, if anyone has any ideas let me know I've also tried all the suggestions posted in other threads

I have my lenovo x230 laptop set to sleep when I close the lid. When I close the lid the "sleep" icon on the back of the screen lights up. But the batter will not last through the night on sleep mode. Within five hours or so, the battery is completely drained and I have to plug in and boot up the system. I've never seen such poor batter performance during sleep mode on any other laptop I've ever owned.  Another thread in this forum blames the USB port that allows you to charge mobile phones/etc. during low-power states and recommends disabling the "always power on" option fo this USB port in the Bios settings. I've done so, be it doesn't seem to have helped. At least my laptop still will not make it through the night in sleep mode.  At this point, it seems my ownly option is to use sleep mode only when the laptop is plugged in and hibernation mode when on batter power, which is disappointing. I've never had to worry about this in the past with other laptops.  Perhaps/probably related is the fact that the lenovo ThinkVantage Power Manager (v. 7.16) hangs at the splash screen when I try to open it, so I've been trying to manage the power through the windows control panel power settings.

Hello, I've had my Lenovo y50-70 laptop for two years now. The processor is an i7-4720HQ @ 2.60Hz and GPU is a GTX 960M with Windows 10 OS. The issue is that my computer will occassionally shutoff while gaming for 40 minutes to an hour with no warning beforehand. Most of my drivers are up-to-date and the computer has a normal temperature. I also don't think it is overheating. The fans aren't noisy and have been cleaned out of any dust. I've also turned off fast-startup feature. I don't have very many programs installed and not that many background processes going on. The shutdowns occur with or without the charging adapter. So, I'm not entirely sure what is causing these random shutdowns to occur but I think it may be related to the BIOs. I'm not sure if I should downgrade to the previous BIOs version  if it works? or even how to do that. Can anyone help me out? I would greatly appreciate the effort.

I've had this laptop since Feburary of 2016, so my system is just under 2 years old and is out of warranty as of April.  It has a Windows 10 (x64 bit) operating system.  If there is additional information I need to provide, please let me know. Starting at about a week ago, my laptop decided to shut down on its own, without any hint of a warning.  And then booted back up after a couple seconds.  It has done this a handful of times with no real pattern as I could be doing anything (ie. playing a game, drawing, or just browsing the web).  It isn't even a daily occurance, more just every other day. I have done an entire system reset as well as run several different diagnostics checks and even virus/malware scans but everything is coming up clean, there are no detectable issues.  I have been using a universal charger for a while and only have recently heard about how they're not ideal for long-term; I am currently ordering a replacement.  A popular answer I've come across while searching online is overheating but my system isn't even remotely warm when it happens.  I don't hear any odd sounds coming from my laptop when the issue occurs either if that is a question that arises.  I am also not aware if this problem persists while disconnected from the charger as I don't tend to use it off the charger often.

After a day or two laptop started shuttingdown itself. Sometimes when the screen was off, sometimes just when I was working. Started to look the situation more carefully and noticed that ACPI driver was not installed. Donwloaded Lenovo energy manager which fixed lack of driver and laptop was running continuously over night. It was almost 1-2 weeks that pc was working well without shutdowns. Then the laptop was on a "field" work and shutting down started again. I looked Windows system log and there seems to be always "Kernel-Processor-Power" warning 37, where it tells that speed of one of cores is restricted (there is four of those warnings totally, for every core.) This warning comes in the log usually just a bit before the time shutdown happens... So far I have tested: Running PC with battery only and with power supply only (without battery)Starting lubuntu live on an usb stick.Unplugging ALL possible things, including SSD, DVD drive, Wifi module, and then running PC with lubuntu live.I even booted to BIOS setup and let it stay there, but after 15-20 minutes it has done shutdown again.Flashed BIOS to newest version (3.04) as well.I have disassembled the whole laptop in parts and changed also thermal paste between thermal element and CPU, even though temper... Hello! I've owned my G505s since August 2014 and it has served faithfully as my school laptop. I do not have any money for a new laptop and I've looked at endless posts and articles, so I'm at my wit's end here. It all started last night, when my hard drive just failed to boot. It told me there was no OS installed, despite Windows 8.1 being installed. I rebooted a couple times and the same message popped up and I checked the BIOS settings. They were all correct. I assumed that my HDD became corrupted or something occurred, so I found a Windows 8 ISO from Microsoft's website and started installing tonight, since I knew the BIOS stored the key and would auto-input. That part was successful. The part that's killing me here, though, is the constant shutdowns now. It started ever since I had to reinstall. At first I just put Windows 10 Tech Preview on it to quickly get some work done since I had the install USB with me, but it shut down randomly there too. Now, during the install of the Windows 8.1 OS, it shuts down at random times and corrupts the installation, forcing me to start over and observe the same shutdown issue all over again. I do not have money to ship it and I'm losing my mind here. I thought Lenovo was good, but I'm seeing others with the same exact problem, and I'm several months away from having enough money for even a cheapo laptop. Can anyone help?Keep in mind that I can't even get past a Windows 8 install and booting a Live USB of Linux is a no-g... Read more

A:Lenovo G505s Randomly Shutting Down

hi Chripallo,

Welcome to the Forums.

It could just be a coincidence but It's possible that there's a hardware part that's failing inside the machine (e.g., Memory, Overheating GPU) which causes the shutdown issues.

Things that you can try:
1. Re-seat the RAM and HDD and try reinstalling Windows.
2. If you have two RAM sticks (e.g., 2x4GB), remove one stick and observe if you can now install Windows.
3. (Optional) Check this article on how to create a bootable USB diagnostics to test the RAM/HDD.
    - Sample image

Note:
You will need to set the following options in the BIOS to boot from a  USB
Security Tab:
Secure Boot = Disabled
Exit Tab:
OS Optimized Defaults = Other OS.
Boot Tab:
UEFI = Disabled
Boot Mode = Legacy

If the problem remains and you're still not able to install Windows after doing the above steps then I recommend you contact lenovo for warranty service.

I am using a Microsoft USB Adapter (Model MN-510) to connect the HP. It is running Windows 8.
Using the Network Diagnostic, the HP will 'repair' the problem...but it just looses connection after a few minutes yet again.

I am connected to my University's network. (So I can't make router changes)

Any help or ideas?

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad X220 running Windows 7, and I've had it for about two years now. It worked fine up until this morning and now immediately turns off even if it is tilts slightly. When I say it turns off immediately, I mean it's like the battery has been taken out. Sometimes static will appear momentarily on screen before it turns off, and other times it won't turn off, but the entire screen just stays frozen. Also, now when I try to access websites like Facebook or Google which would normally be okay, I get a message saying that the website's security certificate is not trusted. I feel like doing a system restore would help, but since I got the laptop from school I don't have administrator privileges and cannot do so.

Below are my laptop's specs. Honestly I have no idea whether this is a hardware or software problem. If anyone has any idea what might be wrong or knows of any way to fix this, your help is much appreciated.

hi everyone,
im looking for clarification on a theory i have. so here is the situation.
i am trouble shooting at inspiron n5040 laptop. The laptop will not stay on longer then 10 mins WITH the power cord plugged in. Nor will it stay on on battery power alone. Now the pc tells me that the battery needs to be replaced, so i bought a new battery for this laptop. Same issue except the only difference is that with the new battery it no longer tells me it needs to be replaced.
Now event viewer is telling me that its a kernel Power 41 error. In my experience trouble shooting this its been the power supply is going bad. but since this is a laptop and it has a battery, im not sure how to go about replacing the "power supply" any thoughts???

Hey folks. Having a problem here!

My PC randomly turns off every 48ish hours, sometimes more. It's on pretty much 24/7 because of work, (if you're a 3d artist, you'd know the pain of render times lol)

Anyway I read some topics and found maybe its the cpu over heating, but it doesnt reboot and my temperature gauge never shows it higher than 40. normall around 36 (degree's C), my graphics card can hit to about 50ish but i've had that before and it was ok.

I've reformatted recently and this is only time its started doing it. Before it never did for about a year.

My PSU is a 720 WATT, was pretty expencive almost 200bucks. I've only had it about 3 month, It powers 2 IDE HDD's and 2 SATA HDD's. Rest you can find in my pc bio thing above

I've tried the opening case n facing a fan on it, it still rebooted (about 10 minutes ago did it :O) and previously did it about 48hrs prior to that. I have a Soprano Thermal take case so it's pretty cooled, but the hard drives do warm it up a bit.

Any ideas, appeciate any help

Hi,

I have recently bought a new laptop, an Acer aspire 5820T laptop. When I read about the description of this laptop, the 8 hour battery life and massive HDD, I was very impressed and so I decided to buy it. Everything was running smoothly until I noted that the laptop had shut down, all on it's own. I turned it back on and it was fine. It done the exact same thing a couple of days ago and now a third time only a few minutes ago. I'm starting to get a bit worried about this now and want to know if there are any tips on what I should be doing. I will add that when my laptop is in use, it runs on it's battery and when I have finished with it I just close the lid leaving the power on, the computer then goes into 'hibernate' mode. Overnight, I hook my computer up to the mains to fully charge overnight. Earlier today I was talking to my Dad about leaving the computer on 'hibernate' when computer is not in use and now I have decided to 'shut down' the computer when not in use. I don't know if this will make any difference. The computer has an 8 hour battery life so I assumed it was able to last long lengths of time without the mains.
If nothing can really be done, I'm guessing I can take it back to the store I got it from and let them sort it out, I do have guarentee after all.

What do I do to make it stop? It keeps happening when im doing important things. Causing me alot of stress.

Hello,

What is the make/model of the PC? If custom built post the specs.

If this is a laptop have the vents and fans been cleaned lately? Caring for your notebook computer.

If this is a desktop PC has the inside of the case been cleaned lately.

Random shutdowns can usually be attributed to overheating or power issues.

Please Help! I build a really nice system back in march, and its been running good for a few months - flawlessly - while doing video editing.
Then a few weeks ago there was two power outages in one day.
While the thing still kind'of works, It randomly shuts down. Eventually, It would not even boot into the OS (Vista Ultimate), Shutting down everything, including the fans, with 2 seconds. I could not even boot into the BIOS. Instinctivly, I sent for a replacement PSU. After 2 weeks (thanks UPS) I got the new one. The first time I booted it, the computer shutdown as described above. I excused it as a cord plugin error. The rest of that night, It ran for Hours, while I played through the demo of Crysis (So it's definatly NOT and overheat) and it was fine. However the peculiar behavior returned the next morning, only failing to boot twice. This has happend for two days now. I even tested the PSU like they say on Corsairs site and it randomly shut off with only the load of a fan.
Why is it still doing it? WHAT IS MY PROBLEM? So frustrating.
Help would be gladly appreciated.

Since the factory restore the machine is regularly shutting down (a 'soft', controlled windows shut down, that starts with the windows "Logging Off" message) for no discernible reason.

WHen it does this, there is no Blue Screen Of Death, no frozen screen, no sudden loss of power and no popup box in the middle of screen that some older viruses used to create when creating 'logging-off' type behaviour in PCs.

The hard-drive has been scanned from another PC using 3 different virus scanner and found to be virus free.

I am struggling to find a way to get a case/CPU temperature readout (tried MBM5). - However I strongly doubt heat is the issue, as all the internal fans are turning and unblocked, it is a very cold room & the PC shut's down in a controlled manner, which is not the same as the "sudden crash" I've always seen on other PCs that overheat.

I have Teamviewer and Kasperksy Internet Security on there, and have removed both temporarily to eliminate them as possible causes. - The only other software on there is the Dell facotry software, Chrome, Firefox, OpenOffice, Adobe Flash and Read and the Canon Printer Software.

Windows is up to date. And the update settings are set to "Download updates but let me choose whether to install them".

Ok Im going to start here since this problem started after upgrading to SP2.

I have a small home network, my main PC is running windows xp while my other is running win 98. With the upcoming release of a new game that will require SP2 I went ahead last night and updated. Everything seemed to go great no problems updating all smooth sailing.

Now the problem, it seems that after the update my winxp computer randomly just stops the network. When I say stop, i mean stop, not just the internet but I cant reach my router or my other comp and it also kills my router forcing me to reboot both the computer and router.

One thing i have noticed is when this problem occurs if I let the computer sit for a bit before restarting (ie a couple minutes) the internet sharing icon vanishes from the network properties window. I have never understood why I have internet sharing running, its actually disabled at the moment because I dont use the computer as a host for sharing thats why i have a router.

The network card is a Linksys LNE100TX with the latest drivers from Linksys. The router is a Lisksys BEFSR41 with the latest firmware.

So if anyone has any ideas or suggestions I would love the help

Thank you

Hi gswilli

. . . and Welcome to the Tech Support Forums!

First of all, let's make sure that Internet Connection Sharing is disabled [you really don't want that enabled when you have a router].

Disabling Internet Connection Sharing on Windows XP
1) Click on the Start button, select Control Panel, select Network and Internet Connections, and choose Network Connections.
2) Perform the following actions on each connection icon, including all Local Area Connections and all dialup connections, in this window:
2a) Right click on the connection's icon and select Properties.
Select the Advanced tab.
2b) If there is a checked box for Internet Connection Sharing ("Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection"), uncheck it.
2c) Click OK.
3) Close the Network Connections window when all connections have had ICS disabled.

Disabling Internet Connection Sharing on Windows 98 Second Edition
1) Click on the Start button, click on Settings, and click on Control Panel.
2) Double click on Add/Remove Programs.
3) Select the Windows Setup tab
4) Select Internet Tools and click on Properties.
5) Uncheck Internet Connection Sharing if it is checked.
6) Click OK, and then click OK again.
7) Restart the computer.

Next, make sure to check that the following configurations
--- that are setup by default on a Windows XP Internet-Connection-Sharing computer. Change these to work best with your router's s... Read more

Hello,Recently, I found out that Crucial has a 32GB DDR3 kit for laptops:Crucial says that it's not compatible with X230 because the X230 says that it supports up to 16GB of RAM. That was true when the X230 hit the streets, but not today. So, has anyone tried this combination?

-------------------------------------------

http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/HJTSetup.exe

Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

NVidea tells me my graphics card is not getting sufficient power and lowers my performance to a level that won't damage my card.

How can I overcome this problem. Already format my PC, but it did not make a difference

A:Loosing power

Sounds like you need a new larger power supply. Check your power supply output versus what nvidia says the card needs

My Lenovo x230 ThinkPad is having issues with the screen in which there are pink and green lines interspersed on the screen when I open the computer; these issues have not gone away for a few hours. Is there any way I can fix this without buying hardware or taking apart the computer? (NOTE: this has happened several times in the past and has gone away.)

Dear Colleagues, I have bought a Lenovo X230 Laptop from ebay and have tried to activate windows after installation, but got an error message - I have identified it as a date and time problem in the bios. I logged in to the bios date and time - changed it to the correct date and time - saved the settings by pressing F10, but I still get a windows activation problem - meaning the bios is not accepting the date and time change.  I even updated the bios but it is still not accepting the date and time change. The Bios firmware number is: G2ETB3WW ( 2.73 ).I wanted to ask if this is a hardware /motherboard problem or a CMOS battery problem ? - is there a method for confirming either ? - has any other X230 user experienced this and how did you solve it ?.Thank you.

I have a Lenovo x230 laptop with an i7 processor that starts the second time. This means that when you first turn on, there is a black screen. The restart must be forced and then normally turns on. I tried to use an external screen, tricks with disconnecting the battery and pressing the switch, CMOS battery, RAM memory replacement - nothing did not succeed. On this motherboard, the service replaced the BIOS chips due to failure in the upgrade. They said that the computer would not work anyway. The computer, however, works, but after the second launch - which is annoying. I have updated the BIOS on my own, which did not solve the problem. Once the computer starts, it works very steadily and without problems. I have not found a similar case anywhere on the internet.

Hello Experts, I have a X230  which has been serving me reliably during my African travels. Sometimes it lost power suddenly, but it was manageable.Since last week, however, it doesn't power on. Actually sometimes it does, a hard reset (pressing the power button for 30sec without the battery) helped a few times, but inconsistently. The notebook loses power in sleeping mode and I cannot turn it on, nor can I charge the battery: the LEDs don't even blink. When I am lucky, it will turn on another day and I can use it as long as it is awake. When I am unlucky I just keep pressing the power button with no results. Updating the BIOS also did not help. Since the notebook still has a warranty for 38 days, I took it to Lenovo Service Center in Lusaka, Zambia. They attributed the problem to faulty fan and overheating. Cleaned the fan but that didn't help. Unfortunately my situation does not allow me to wait two weeks for a new fan, also I am not certain it would help me turning the notebook on. I am now travelling to Malawi and Tanzania. I would very much appreciate an advice if it is possible to fix it, I have a small toolkit with me. If there's no other option than another service center, please advise whether it is possible to pre-order parts to another country. Please also let me know if you happen to now a magician/technician in these countries who could fix the issue. Many thanks in advance for your advice and opinion.

Description of problem: at some point when playing audio, sound will cut out. The levels will still be moving on the mixer, but no sound will come through the speakers or sound jack. It seems that soon after I've closed all sound-producing applications, sound returns. I am 50-75% sure that this is strictly a sound jack issue, as I don't remember being able to reproduce the issue without the sound jack being active when the audio drops out. Frequently, bumping my headphones' cord seems to cause the problem, but other times, the problem seems to happen on a click, a loud sound, or seemingly nothing at all.

I am unsure of how to reliably reproduce the problem, so it is difficult to diagnose whether or not the problem can be reproduced when the sound jack is not active. This isn't common use for me...

Origin: Appeared mid-October, around the same time I had upgraded to the newest drivers (where the old ones were from earlier than May 2013). All were downloaded through the Lenovo website and/or Lenovo's System Update utility, with the exception of the Intel graphics drivers, which were downloaded through the Intel website. At this point, I was running Windows 8, not Windows 8.1. I installed Windows 8.1 recently, and the problem remains.

What I've tried: disabling drivers, reinstalling drivers, disabling sound effects, disabling audio application overrides...

What I haven't tried: rolling back drivers (being honest, I have a bit of trouble believing that this is strictly ... Read more

Hi all,Apologies if I've missed this elsewhere - new to the forums so still learning to navigate. As background, machine type listed below:X230 Laptop (ThinkPad) - Machine Type 2325, Model BA6As I see it I'm having two separate issues here but they may well be linked: Recent Windows 10 updates are making the taskbar fully ineffective - I note this is fairly common and have tried the powershell route to check updates to no avail; curious to know what the advice here generally is, if X230 is no good with Windows 10 or is there something specific I should be doing to rectify this. This weekend, my laptop has developed a habit whereby the sound and video playback stops working suddenly. On boot-up it's fine but after a while, I can't listen to music or watch videos at all. Bit alarmed about this but suspect it may be linked to the thunderstorm on Thursday (based in London...), given I woke up to realise the powerboard on my TV had also gone. My laptop is within warranty so hopefully if it's hardware related, I would hope this is covered - in truth, I was reassured about the Lenovo warranty but have never had cause to use it at home or work over the last 6 years of using Lenovos.Any help or guidance would be massively appreciated!Kind regards,Bal
