Network adapter settings to isolate vm from host

Q: Network adapter settings to isolate vm from host

What network adapter settings mean vms can communicate with each other but not with host? Thanks
Vmware Workstation 10

Preferred Solution: Network adapter settings to isolate vm from host

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Network adapter settings to isolate vm from host

Hi there

Some sort of Switch / subnet probably required here with firewall settings also perhaps to block communications from the subnet.

I think this is more of a Networking issue than a VM one itself. The other question - do you still want the HOST to have access to the Internet.

I've only done this where I've had a SINGLE VM which needed Internet access for a "Dodgy site" --was testing a Virus and so I attached the NIC physically to the VM and disabled networking on the HOST while I was testing.

However if you need Internet and LAN access on the HOST and you have more than one VM running concurrently I should ask the Network gurus as this is outside my area of expertise. I suspect also you might need two Physical NIC's for this - one for the Host and one for the subnet your VM's are on - but I can't give any more help than that.

Try asking @Kari -- I'm sure he's done things like that but he uses HYPER-V which is also a good system if you have W10 pro or Enterprise.

I'm using VMware player with Debian installed as guest. I have Windows installed on the host machine. On the network preferences I'm using Bridged network but in Windows task manager i can see the network usage of the network adapter. Using Wireshark i can see the packets of the virtual machine, so the VM Network is not isolated and the host machine (Windows) can see all the packets of the VM. Can be this a security problem? Can a Malware or an infected website infect the host OS? On Debian i have used Iptables to deny the output connection to the Host ip. Kaspersky internet security (Installed on Windows) can't see the network used by the Virtual machine.

I have an Inspiron 6000 (home) running XP and a Latitude D610 (XP) that I used to be able to use interchangably with a Comcast modem and a Netgear WGR614 router. A couple of weeks ago, my internet connections slowed and now have ended.

After several phone calls to Comcast, the last tech told me the problem was "the network address showing in the device manager is different than the network address that shows in the TCIP/IP settings." I am getting an error message of "network cable unplugged" on the Inspiron and the red X on the second of the two adapters (1st is 1394; 2nd is Broadcam 440x 10/100). I can get internet from the Latitude when directly connected to the cable modem, but not when routed through the router for wireless.

We have tried multiple reconfig of the IP, shutting everything down (computers, router, modem) all with no success. Any help anyone can provide would be great--I still need to order Christmas presents.

This computer had malware like: vosteran, multioplug, seachextensions, goobzo, rockettab, installcore. I was able to remove them using Malwarebytes.
The computer seemed to be fine for a few days after that, until the network stopped working. The wireless/network icon has a red "x". I can't open the the "Open Network and Sharing Center" unless I'm in safe mode, and I can't open the network adapter settings (it says that windows explorer has an error and closes the window). I also tried to connect a usb network adapter, and an ethernet ExpressCard, but it wouldn't install them. It won't read usb memories either, unless they were installed previous to this incident.
I booted the computer with bitdefender and scaned it. It found a few trojan infected e-mails that were removed. No more viruses have been found after that.

I am running a LAN with 7 PC's. 6 are Windows XP Home and one is Pro.
The Pro computer holds a data folder that all the other computers access with a billing program that is a developers version based on Microsoft Acess.

I have Cat 5 cable running to each through a 10/100 switch.

The write function of the "remote pc's" are much slower than when one does the same function on the Pro computer that holds the data.

I have read on the forum that changing the settings on the network adapter card to force full duplex at 100mbs will speed up the process.

There are other settings on the adapters such "receive buffer" and transmit settings. Will increasing the number on these settings increase the speed of the write and read funtions on the network? What can I do to speed up the network the best.

Thanks all

Here is the scenario...

I use alternate configuration for my LAN adapter to connect it from one of my customer's site, I type in the Ip address, subnet mask, default gateway and DNS servers and it work fine. I have to frequently change my network settings from "obtain Ip address automatically" to static IP address based on the location. Earlier I would go to Alternate address and connect without typing the default gateway and dns server as they would be all there. I had my laptop reimaged and now I have to type the default gateway and DNS Servers everytime I connect to my customers network. So, the difference is need not type teh default gateway and DNS server Ip addresses and now I have to...Wondering how to fix this issue because I am tired of typing them again and again.

Any solutions will be appreciated.

Just guessing here (I've had the same issue with my laptop for several years and have never fixed it) - but is the Network Location Awareness service started on the system? Hi slbailey welcome to Sevenforums.

A quick google suggests that your Westell "modem" is actually a router, is this correct? Ie, do you connect to it through Ethernet cable? If so, what is your Network Card make and model? If you're not sure, then you can check using SF's System Specs tool here; System Info - See Your System Specs

I have a locked laptop and I need to change the settings to automatic IP addressing, so I can connect to the domain and log in.

A:How can I change Network Adapter Settings pre boot?

If the laptop's hard drive is fully encrypted, then you can forget about the info below.

The tool mentioned in option five of this tutorial also has an offline registry editor.
User Account - Reset Password in Windows 7

I have used it many times (but not for this specific task).

If need be, google for help on how to use that editor.

You can put that tool on a USB stick, boot to it and change EnableDHCP to a 0.

That EnableDHCP value name is located here:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\{Globally unique identifier}

You might need to look thru a few GUIDs before you find the one where EnableDHCP is currently set to 1.
There might be other settings that need to be changed too, but I doubt it. If need be, use Process Monitor on a similar laptop to see what all gets changed when you change to DHCP. I did that do find the info above. EnableDHCP exists in other places too. These other places get changed too, but they might not be needed. Test by changing just the one key/value.

Maybe other forum members have a simpler way to enable DHCP on a locked laptop that is a member of a domain.

I have tried this with a different network adapter so it is not due to the adapter Id think! So here's the deal. I had someone move into my home with my family. Nice enough guy but his browsing habits routinely result in his computer becoming infected with viruses and malware. As a result, and to protect all the computers in use by my family, everyone has their network mode switched to "public". I'm not really sure if this is protection enough from a computer that shares the same router as us but that's the best I could think of.

I would really like to get our family's networking capabilities back up and running, so I'm wondering if there is a way to allow, my families set of computers / phones / TV's to talk to each other without exposing them to the virus laden computer that lives downstairs.

I just installed windows 8.1 pro on an MSI z97 pc mate motherboard with I5 3.3 ghz processor, 16 gb ddr3 1600 MHz ram, with embedded realtek pcie gbe NIC. I checked and found that hardware virtualization is enabled by default in the BIOS.

I tried to set up a virtual switch using the latest bios and drivers from MSI. I created a virtual switch choosing the external option and the share with host OS option. I then connected to the VM. No network connectivity on VM but host still worked.

I then used autopatcher to update windows 8.1 on the vm. I removed and reinstalled the virtual switch choosing external option and share with host OS option. Same conditions occurred.
And then I installed the latest NIC driver. Same problem - media disconnected.

I tried this process with the latest driver from the realtek website which was a couple years more up to date. I had such high hopes! Same problem.

I then used msconfig to prevent all non-Microsoft services from starting and rebooted. I removed and recreated the switch and I was still hoping for success. Same exact conditions occurred.

These are the conditions that occur whenever an external switch with host os sharing enabled is installed in between all of these troubleshooting steps. It looks exactly the same every time...

I need help with configuring Microsoft Loopback Adapter on my Windows 7 Professionl 32-bit laptop. The Device Manager for the adapter says, "This device is working properly". Relevant screenshots are as follows:

I disabled NetBIOS over TCP/IP <--------- Not sure if this was required.

There is no antivirus installed and the windows firewall is turned off. Local Area Connection 2 is set to be accessed first by Network Services. I've tried the following with no luck:
1) Uninstall and reinstall the loopback adapter
2) Disable every other adapter and try to connect loopback adapter
3) Change the IP address to something like

When I try to install and configure loopback adapter on Windows Vista Home on the same machine on a separate partition, at least I get "Limited Connectivity".

I am not experienced with loopback adapter so I don't even know how to verify whether I am doing things right or I am getting the results right. I believe my settings are correct, then why is it saying, "No Network Access"? Please help me out here. Thank you!

What am I missing here?

Well, that usually means that there is some kind of memory conflict with the card.

Maybe with a sound card or modem you have installed... can you try taking out all cards but video and the SCSI? See if the problem goes away? You don't need to let it go into Windows of course - the error happens long before that.

The Use automatic check box is checked but grayed out in the property box for the modem, but is checked and not grayed out in the property box for the SCSI host adapter. Any suggestions?

A:Modem Conflicts with SCSI Host Adapter

If it were mine I would go to Start, Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager and delete all references to a modem.

Shut down and move your modem to PCI #3 or the third slot down from the AGP slot)

Boot up and enter BIOS setup menu.....when you get there, then go to the PnP area and DISABLE it if you are using WinXP. (If it were Win98, then you would enable it)

Save and Exit and reboot

When it boots, add the latest and best drivers from the manufacturer's website for the modem.

That should solve your problem.

I registered to forums to get help to solve wireless adapter issue I am having.

I have been looking for help in Lenovo forums and AV provider: problem is still on.

I changed AV software from Symantec to F-Secure. I uninstalled Symantec software and installed F-Secure software. Laptop is Lenovo T520.

What happened

First I recognized that ping commands caused Windows to crash. Then I uninstalled some VPN softwares and ping started to work. Operation did something to wireless and LAN connections, they did not work anymore.

LAN started to work by removing LAN drivers from device manager and reboot. After reboot Windows reinstalled LAN drivers and LAN was ok.

Wireless is a pain in there. I have tried almost everything. All Lenovo provided network softwares and power management tools are uninstalled and reinstalled together with wireless drivers. Wireless driver is not recognized by Windows.

None of automatic repairs or wifi uninstallation operations have corrected problem.

I collected some logs which might help, but now I do not know how to proceed. Windows reinstallation is something which I do not want to do.

Here is the problem, the AWUS036H can only see b or g signals, it's not 802.11n capable so it can't see N only signals. The Landlord has a router which is set to broadcast the faster setting which is 802.11n only, not mixed with b or g because that would limit the connection speed to 54Mbps.

This means that you can't see his N only signal because the AWUS036H isn't N capable. No doubt the inbuilt adaptor is N capable.

You really need to get one that can pick up b, g and more importantly n which is much faster and usually has more range.

I want the modem and router to be off in another room while i connect to it via my new wireless network adapter on my PC. Does the network (router/modem) need to be connected to a host PC to work properly? If this is the case, then i just bought a new network adapter for no reason....

Thanks for any assistance.

A:Wireless adapter, router- is host computer required??

Router goes to modem. That's all you need. The only time a hard-wired connection is handy is when you want to change the router's settings or update its firmware, but otherwise it needs to be connected to nothing else.

problem w/ Microsoft 6to4 adapter (network adapter)

I am frequently being disconnected from the internet.

Microsoft 6to4 adapter (network adapter) has a exclamation mark (!) in a yellow triangle in device manager.

This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)

Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available.

When i check for solutions, it says cannot load driver software.

If there are no problems connected with this code31, ignore it.

My upgrade to Windows 10 went well and all has been great for months until all of a sudden a few days ago when I try to wake up the computer after putting it in sleep mode.. the spinning dots are going at about 1/3 speed and it doesn't wake up until I ctl/alt/del and it restarts.

I also just noticed that now on my task manager one of the processes is Radeon Settings: Host Application and it's continuously sucking between 18% and 30% of available RAM (I have 8 GB ram)

Not sure what happened or what to do but something is obviously wrong. Anyone got any ideas?

Channel A ok, then goes to Channel B, makes start-up request of Iomega Jaz IGB, and FAILS...actual chanel B target Id #4 says...."Unexpected scsi command failure ", followed by a bunch of stats (locations). Hardware mgr indicated the Jaz device checks out ok, (Jaz only dvice on B channel but the channel itself indicates its functional)-

Anybody have a suggestion where to begin to look for source of problem? doesnt appear channel corrupt just the jaz device itself, more likely, its scsi channel B settings- any troubleshooting assit would be genuinely apprteciated!

I installed a PCI firewire card that i ordered, and my computer doesnt boot. It makes a couple of beeping noises (more than usual) and the computer just doesnt boot. I think it might be an IRQ conflict between the PCI firewire card and my new AGP graphics card, because my monitor doesn't work whenever the firewire card is in. These are some devices in my PCI slots: sound card, modem card, and ethernet adapter. Here are the specs: 500 MHz PC, pentiumIII, 512MB SDRAM, Windows XP Pro.

Is there a way I can install my PCI firewire card and make the computer boot? Thanks in advance for any advice.

A:Installed PCI 1394 Firewire Host Adapter, computer doesnt boot

Look up the beep codes in your motherboards manual and see what they mean exactly. It can be something as simple as a loose keyboard cable.

You could also try putting the controller in another PCI slot. The first and the last PCI slots are not the best ones to use since usually those share resources with other motherboard devices.

Hello ausred, and welcome to Windows Vista Forums.

First, can you describe the "problems" you are having with your Ethernet card?

Can you post a screen shot of the Ethernet card entry in your "Device Manager"?

It would look like this:

I'm not totally computer-literate when it comes to hardware and such, but I am fairly literate with most computer terms. So in advance, I apologize for any confusion a misused hardware name may cause.

Also, before I begin, let me just say that the issues hereafter discussed apply to a computer separate from this one. This computer works fine, but the one I will be talking about, my computer, is the one without an internet connection at the moment.

So recently, my network adapter decided to stop working. I won't go into the details, but it's completely fried, and I'd much rather spend the money to get a new one instead of go through the hassel of trying to fix my old one. And thus we come to question number one:

Do most (if not all) network adapter cards work with most PCs? I have a Dell Dimension 4500 with Windows XP Home edition with highspeed cable internet, so would pretty much any network adapter do the job? My stepdad, who is fairly computer-literate (though often too cocky about it) says that pretty much all network adapters will work with any computer, unless the computer and network adapter are old or new, respectively. Also, what are the most reliable brands of network adapters? What kind of details about the product should I look for when purchasing?

Now on to the second part of my post: wireless internet adapter. For a while, my computer has been a few feet from the router because we had/have no way for a cord to reach anywhere else, particu... Read more

Hi! So for a few days now any search engine that I use will automatically redirect me to different websites that display my search keyword, but none of the sites are legit, which can be seen with one look. It got worse yesterday, with pop ups that dont let me close the page they came from, so I have to close the browser: either firefox 3.6.3 or IE 8. Re-opening the browsers does not help. Firefox will not re-open at all. It says that firefox is already open, and it must be closed inorder to open a new window. I cannot end the process using task manager and it does not appear in the applications list at all. IE does restart, but the redirecting still occurs. The redirecting has stopped today after I deleted a wierd IP address form the "hosts" file and made it read only with no System access. I also locked the hosts file using my firewall I think. I just dont want it to come back.

It also started to change the themes on my computer and took Vista and Aero out of the choices. My theme was changed to Windows Standard. I cant figure out if something triggers this or not. Windows gives an error message that Host Process has stopped and was closed. All of these issues are minor, but very annoying and I just want to make sure that something more devious isnt going on in the background on my laptop. Its a Dell Inspiron E1405 running Vista Home Premium; pretty new: about a year old. I dont use windows update or error reporting.

OK so my qusetions are: How can I make sur... Read more

I have a Sony VAIO VGN-SR190E laptop computer, purchassed in December 2008. I have Windows Vista Service Pack 2 installed, and I have most of the updates installed--save for IE 8 and the Microsoft Office 2007 SP that was released a month or so ago.

Anyway, I use screen-reading software (I am blind), and at times I need to change the system's text-to-speech voice for use with certain aplications (mainly the accessible iPod feature in iTunes, which uses the system's text-to-speech voice to generate spoken menus for the iPod), and for the last few months I have been unable to do anything in the control pannel>text to speech settings. I have three SAPI5 voices installed on my system, but none of them show up in the voice selection combo box. When I click the voice selection settings button, I get this error message: "Windows host process (Rundll32) has stopped
Windows is checking for a solution to the problem..."
My only option is to close the message and then I end up back n the control pannel.

I have looked on Google for general rundll32 errors, and most of the forum topics I have found surround video software and such with Vista. In the c:\windows\winsxs folder, I have two files with names that include "rundll32", starting with "x86_microsoft-windows-rundll32...". I have tried disabling all non-Microsoft startups and restarting the computer, but the problem still exists.

Does anyone have any ideas what programs may be... Read more
