X201 Fan Replacement Does Not Fix Fan Error

Q: X201 Fan Replacement Does Not Fix Fan Error

The other day, I had to reboot my X201 (normally it just goes to sleep). On boot up, it complained about the ubiquitous "fan error". Before reading about the "esc" escape, I was able to spin the fan manually to get past the error. Eventually, even that stopped, but fortunately I read about the "esc" trick. I was able to buy a replacement third party fan, but it never spun, and still got the fan error. Thinking it was a bad fan, I bought another third party fan from someone else, and got the same results. Any ideas on what to do next? Do I need to have a real Lenovo fan (FRU 60Y5422) because it has special sensor (like ink cartridages)? Or is there something wrong on the motherboard? Thanks in advance.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Welcome to the forum!

Well, it's not that difficult but you need to disassemble a lot of parts. This is fairly easy to do if you closely follow the instructions of Lenovo's Hardware Maintenance Manual, which you can download from here: click me!

Hi, My Thinkpad X201's replacement charger (laptop was bought refurbished with replacement AC adapter) has recently given up the ghost and I was wondering where or if I could buy an official/good quality replacement charger for the laptop. I'm concerned that some of the ones on ebay aren't of the best quality and could cause problems not too far in the future. Thanks!

I have bought a new battery for my Thinkpad x201 tablet and replaced the old one because it was not working properly. I bought one from eBay and it works fine holds the charge well, but the issue is that when I check the battery status while it's full it only gives me 88%, not 100% even though that it is fully charged, and I get Plugged in not charging. I searched online and I have found solutions about recalibrating the batteries after replacement, I followed the instructions and drained my battery and recharged it again but still no luck it's still indicated that the battery is full at the 80's range. These are the battery specificationsVoltage: DC 14.4VCapacity: 4400mAh / 58WhCondition: Brand New High Quality Replacement Product, works as Genuine parts, 100% OEM Compatible!!CBK Store Number: B-IBM-35-H Thanks

A:x201 fan error

This forum is for the tablet, not the notebook.  It is the fan. (running too slowly).  You need to remove the motherboard to get at it.  The fan is mounted on the underside.

I've had a ThinkPad X201 (3626-CTO) for about a year. No problems until last Friday. Out of the blue (ahem), I got a Blue Screen when the computer woke up, and after that it blue screened every time it restarted in normal mode. However, it worked fine in Safe Mode with Networking. Basically by process of elimination, I was able to determine that it would run fine in normal mode with WLAN Autoconfig disabled (fine except that I couldn't use wireless). After repeated restarts with BSODs, two programs started acting flaky (Thunderbird and ESET IS) and had to be reinstalled. Then when I tried to run a scan with ESET, lots of files wouldn't open, and BSOD. I was convinced it was a failing HDD (which is a SSD).

All of the diagnostics I could run on the hardware gave no errors (HDD Diagnostic in BIOS, full diagnostics in Recovery platform, memtest86+). So, I guessed it might be just some odd filesystem error, so I restored the factory image. Everything worked. I installed a bunch of stuff (Office, Acrobat, Design Premium, ESET IS, Thunderbird, Firefox, Flash, iTunes, Quicktime, Java) and let a bunch of updates install, and all seemed well. Put it to sleep and took it home.

Fine on wakeup. Then I installed Dropbox, Skype and Chrome and let more updates install. It went to sleep. When it woke up, BSOD. BSOD on restart. When I turned off the WLAN Autoconfig service, it would start. If I uninstall and reinstall the Thinkpad 11/b/g/n driver, I can turn on the service and... Read more

Caused by address: igdkmd64.sys+20beae
Crash address: ntoskrnl+7cc40
All are still the same error - DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (d1)

I removed the Intel GMA driver (8.15.10.2401 from Lenovo) and could activate wireless. Sleep and hibernate were disabled; I guess they are tied to the GMA driver? When I restarted, BSOD. Back to the previous BSOD error. So no help. It's possible that the constant crashes on start-up are taking a toll on the filesystem. Twice now I've had to nuke the Thunderbird profile to get it to behave normally. I re-installed the GMA driver.

Hello, I recently replaced all of the fans inside my Lenovo M83 with brand new Noctua 4Pin PWM fans. Unfortunately my motherboard does not like these fans at start up and produces various 0135 fan errors on the American MicroSystem page. The PC and fans work fine after I press F2 and skip the error messages. I have already tried updating my Firmware, Drivers, Windows, Enabling Default Bios Settings, and tryed other Noctua known working fans.  This issue appears to be with poor aftermarket fan support in the BIOS. Can you please remedy this issue for us with a firmware update to support aftermarket fans or let me know how to resolve this issue?

I replaced a harddrive that was no longer functioning with one that already had xp installed on it.

When I boot up the machine it gets to the screen where you choose safe mode, last known good config or normal startup. After choosing an option the computer reboots. If you choose one of the safe mode options it goes down the list of loaded drivers and freezes at MUPS before rebooting.

If I try to reinstall windows - it gets past loading the drivers and when it says windows is starting i get a BSOD.

STOP: 0x0000007B (0XF78D663C,0XC0000034,0X00000000,0X00000000) is the code and there is no other information other than the standard BSOD preamble.

I've been trying to figure this out for hours. The base machine is a Dell Studio Hybrid 140g.

Any help or tips are appreciated.

Edit: I have tested the hard drive on other machines and it works fine with them.

Hi,one reason of issue might be the frequencies of new RAM sticks and CPU i5-520M in your laptop. That processor supports DDR3-800/1066 memory types only. Who knows how SPD feature on the stick regulates the work on lower frequency. Another reasons might be the RAM sticks CAS latency and timings. There is a chance the new memory is too fast for x201. Look at the such parameters of Samsung stick (in CPU-Z, for example).

Hello good fellas! I hope you will be able to help me out with my problem, because it drives me crazy!

The PC is mainly used by my parents (YouTube, Facebook, movies, etc.). The configuration was pretty slow (nothing was changed for 6 years or so), but was just fine for them. MSI motherboard with Intel? Pentium? Processor E2160 and 2GB of DDR2 RAM. Unfortunately, the motherboard has died (I guess so). So I thought it's time to build a quite-modern PC for them. I have left good parts (Samsung hard drive and Corsair power supply).

The "refreshed" PC configuartion is as follow ("+" indicates brand new part):
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-B85M-D3H (+)
CPU: Intel Core i5-4460 (+)
CPU cooling: provided with CPU (+)
Memory: GoodRam 2 x 4GB DDR3-1600 Dual Channel CL9 (+)

Power Supply: Corsair VX450W
Hard Drive: Samsung HD501LJ

and last:
Thermal paste: Arctic MX-2 1g (+)

After assembly, I have installed necessary drivers from the DVD (witch came with motherboard) and everything seemed to be OK. Unfortunately, after leaving PC for some time on idle, I got blue screen with error code 124. I had completly no idea, what could cause this problem. First thought was low CPU Vcore, which may be getting to low for stable work. CPUID HWMonitor (screenshot below) confirmed very low CPU Vcore values.

However, I have done a little more research (including sevenforums.com ) and downloaded BlueScreenView.exe, prime95.exe and RealTemp. I have read recommendatio... Read more

Yesterday, I noticed an error which never appeared before and that was the battery replacement error. The error was "There is a problem with your battery and your computer might shut down suddenly, consider replacing your battery". I searched on the internet but there was no clear explanation so I decided to figure out the problem by myself. I figured out that the problem was allowing a program through the windows firewall.
The thing is that it is a bug in windows 7. It can mostly arise due to 1 of the following reasons

1) Antivirus
2) Allowing a program through firewall
3) Installing a program (In my case it appeared because of Directx installation from microsoft website!)
4) changes to registry.

These are the most common causes I found on the internet and after experiencing this problem.

The solution to this is Microsoft System restore and it is the only solution that worked out. So if any of you have experienced this problem and you believe that your battery is new, just restore it because it is the way of reverting the changes you made.

hope this helps

Hi all!I have had this issue for a long time now, but only just getting round to posting finally.I know others have posted about fan issues but mine seems different and tried everything on the other threads with no luck.I will bullet point things so it is easier to understand; *Fan will not start on boot and will stay off until temperature causes shutdown.*Fan works fine in BIOS.*If I blow into the fan to get it spinning it starts up and will then stay functional, even after reboots, until it is properly shut down.*Tried TPFanControl on each setting and fan still does not start. It does control the fan as it should if I maually kickstart the fan.*On Windows 10 - tried reverting to Windows 7 but the issue persisted so returned back to Win10.*Replaced the fan twice, no change.*Never had the "fan error" popup. I think that covers everything, and the issue seems to be the initial kick to get the fan spinning as is fine afterwards. Any help would be extremely appreciated.Regards

Can anyone give a definitive answer as to whether or not the X201 has a top or top and bottom roll cage? The current tabook states:Compared to the X201, the X201s has ..., and roll cage in display cover. The tabook makes no mention of a roll cage for the X201, so together the implication is clear: the X201 has no roll cage. Except most of the reviews of the X201 (specifically not the X201s) claim it does have a roll cage (some say top and bottom).  And on Lenovo's website, it states here:Next-generation ThinkPad roll cage on X201, X201s, X301 and X200s Note the inclusion of the X201 in the list. So, which is it? A:want to upgrade thinkpad x201 ram?

Max supported by this serie is 2x 4GB RAM, a 8GB module will not work.

You'd need SODIMM modules DDR3-8500 (DDR3-1066) or DDR-10600 (DDR3-1333). DDR3-12800 will most probably not work (I never managed to get one working in mines)

Stick to well known brands like:

Samsung
Elpida
Kingston (but avoid the "Value RAM" series)

I have a lenovo thinkpad x201 from 2011. I had it sitting 3 years. 1 year ago, i got it out of the attic. It is a really fast laptop for some heavy office use, lightweight gaming and having multiple tabs open in the browser. I use it every day. I replaced the HDD with an SSD and it became blazing fast. It has a small problem with the fan though. Its having a hard time running. My laptop would normaly be on 60 degress celcius under normal use and hit 80 degress under really heavy use but after 4 months it would reach 70-80 degress under normal use and hit 90-95 degress under heavy use. But things got worse. After 1 month my laptop would reach 80-85 degress celsius under normal use and hit 95 even when i tried to open google chrome with some tabs open. Sometimes, when i was watching a video, my laptop would reach 100 degress. I couldn't play any videogames because my laptop would fry itself. My laptop would shut down immediately when it hit so high temperatures. After that, i replaced the problematic fan, dusted the motherboard(there wasn't any dust though) and reapplied the thermal paste. Things got much better. Under normal use it would reach 60-70 degress and reach 80-85 degress under heavy use. But after 2 months things got bad again. Now my laptop reaches 65-70 degress under normal use and reach 85-93 under heavy use. Things are not as bad as before but i'm still getting angry when it reaches 93 degress because the CPU clocks are lowered and my LAPTOP lags for about 2... Read more

Hi everyone, I'd like to order a X201 model online, but my situation is a bit complicated...I reside in Singapore and have a friend studying in a US university, is it possible to ask him to buy for me using my own Singapore Credit card?

A:X201 Education price

lenovo don't accept international credit card, maybe you should wire the money to his account instead.

Hello, I want to replace my drive in X201. Will every 2.5'' ssd disc suit it? (for example this http://allegro.pl/dysk-ssd-samsung-128gb-sata6-0gbps-mz7pd128hcfv-i6898530898.html). Or should I aim at certain discs?  I am aware that X201 supports SATA II gen, but I want to buy SATA III disc to use this disc in future configurations.  Thanks for reading.

I have tried in Windows 7 64bit and 8 64bit and have had no luck. I have googled all over and found some hints on this forum to try installing Communication Manager, but it does not solve anything. It's like the camera is not seen. I know the camera is not broken or disconnected because LINUX of all things can see it and use it. On the X201 page there are no drivers for the camera at all, only the communication manager install. For Win 8 it is listed that the drivers are built into Windows 8, but as far as I can tell this is not the case, unless i am doing something wrong? Does anyone have a working webcam with their X201 at all in Windows?

A:Webcam does not work on X201.

Try below methods to resolve your webcam issue:1. Check the drivers are properly installed. Go to Control panel-> Device manager -> Imaging devices and check if there is any driver with a yellow mark. Right click Imaging device and Update drivers and check if webcam is working.2. Check in BIOS if integrated camera is enabled.3. Press FN+F6 to open the Communications settings window and press Show my video image button to enable the camera.

Hello everyone, I bought myself a 9-Cell Battery off ebay for my X201. I got it for 50?, it said it was used but had 99% capacity remaining. It arrived today and looks very good, as good as new, but definetly feels geniune.Whats odd is that it doesn't have the production date sticker on it, it looks to have been peeled off. Also, in the lenovo Vantage software it reads a firmware version 0000-0000-0000-0000, and when I tried updating the battery firmware with the lenovo battery firmware update tool, i got an error saying, the attached battery could not be read. And whats the most interesting is that lenovo vantage reads a cycle count of 189, which is impossible because the full charge capacity is still 91Whh, which is very close to the original 94Wh and a battery with 189 charging cycles would be pretty much dead. Can someone, preferably a Lenovo Official, tell me if this battery is counterfeited or not? Is it maybe an original case but someone changed out the battery cells itself?I attached a photo of the label on the battery as well as the lenovo vantage battery readout. Hope someone can help me out here
