Ive Tried. Impossible to Delete!

Q: Ive Tried. Impossible to Delete!

OK..

I have a folder/file deleting problem..
On an XP/sp2 NTFS system.
My error states...cannot delete file: cannot read from source file or disk
This problem occurs when I try to delete a folder.

If i try deleting the folder that contains the problem folder i get this..
cannot delete Contains Profanity Fake-NAME : cannot find specified file.
(note: thats not the real name)

How this file happend to get on my cpu...
I just bought a new HD and I was copying all of my songs from my iPod. I was using a nifty little tool to back up (and organize) a couple thousand mp3s on my new HD. The transfer process was halted when windows encountered an invalid file name error. I think the file contained a ":".

I have tried...
safe mode method.
cmd-manual deleting method.
MoveOnBoot method.
I have even done all of those methods with the HD booted as a slave.

NO LUCK

any suggestions plz reply.

Preferred Solution: Ive Tried. Impossible to Delete!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Ive Tried. Impossible to Delete!

Here is a simple procedure

Sometimes you want to delete a file but when you do so an error message pops and tells you it cannot be done. Do successfully delete such a file do the following:

Open a Command Prompt window and leave it open.

Close all open programs.

You now need to close EXPLORER.EXE. The proper way to shutdown Explorer is to raise the "Shut Down Windows" dialog (select "Shut Down..." from the start menu), hold down CTRL+SHIFT+ALT and press the CANCEL button. Explorer will exit cleanly.

Note: The <CTRL+SHIFT+ALT> at the 'Shut Down Windows' dialog method of closing Explorer is built into Explorer. (It was specifically designed so that developers writing Shell Extensions could get Explorer to release their Shell Extension DLLs while debugging them).

Go back to the Command Prompt window and change to the directory where the undeletable file is located in. At the command prompt type DEL <filename> where <filename> is the file you wish to delete.

Go back to Task Manager, click File, New Task and enter EXPLORER.EXE to restart the GUI shell.

Close Task Manager.

or

(Tip modification submitted by James R. Twine who has a great utility called Delete FXP Files that can help you delete files and folders that simply won't go away).

Hello, I am having issues on deleting files that I do not want on my pc any longer. The error says its being used by another program and i have tried Unlocker and several other programs to try and get rid of these files. One program said the files were located in my WINDOWS folder, and another said the files didn't exist. I have ran multiple spyware programs to no avail. I TRY running several different anti virus scans but when it reaches these malicious files the scan does not progress any further.

I am positive there are programs running in the background but I have no idea what they are. Also, every time i restart windows some weird bleep noise happens. I could really use some help from someone educated on these matters.

I have scanned my machine several times with avast already, and every single time, i get a list of remaining viruses. And everytime i attempt to use the option: "Repair" Avast refuses to do so for some reason.

I Then proceed to "Delete". However, during the day, avast STILL keeps giving me the common " Threat has been detected "

For some reason, the listing of the system32/svc host or some sort.. keeps showing up.
I'm running out of options.

I download a lot of files and folders from the web, and heres one of the main reasons I find windows more of a pain to use than linux -- NO WAY TO FORCE CHMOD 777 on folders....

I've been cleaning out all the old unnecessary files, and I've come across a folder that simply wont allow itself to be deleted.

within this folder there are several other folders in a hierarchy, and at each level, they are all read-only. I tried removing the read only tab, but they REFUSE to change from read only (and I AM the administrator), and the files at the bottom of the hierarchy are all .gif (and other?) image files. None of these even have Delete available as an option when right clicked, and if I circle a bunch of them and click delete nothing happens.

if I try to delete the folder they are in, it gives me ACCESS DENIED.

If Windows XP wasnt so gay, and used the FAT32 filesystem I could just make a linux bootdisk, boot from there, mount /dev/hda1, chmod 777 and delete it from there, but NTFS mounting support is still sketchy to this day.

any way I could forcibly remove this folder? None of the files within it are being used with any processes, it looks like some of them (or all) are either corrupt, or insisting on being read-only for one reason or another...

I recently did a lossless re-install of Windows 7 on my machine, which placed my old data onto a folder called "Windows.Old", allowing me to totally restore everything. However, doing this generated a few folders that I can't seem to do anything with. I was able to remove most of them through the use of the Delete Invalid File application, but not even that is able to clear the last two folders:

My old Users folder, and my old ProgramData folder.

No matter what I do, these files are totally locked. I was able to move them to the desktop, but beyond that, they are being stubborn. Every time I try to delete them normally, I get the following message:

This is after I get a popup to allow administrative rights on the aforementioned folder. No matter what I do, this message will always pop up and bar me from deleting the folders.

Here's a list of all the things I've tried:

Changing file ownership.
Deleting individual files within the folders.
Disabling User Account Control notifications.
Fiddling with administrative details.
Deleting the folders through the use of Delete Invalid File.
Moving the folders to new locations.

None of these work. I can't remove the files at all. They're stuck, sitting on my desktop, taunting me as they use up my already tightly constrained HDD space.

How do I get rid of these pesky old files?

A:Impossible to delete leftover folders

Try Unlocker:
Download Unlocker 1.9.2 - FileHippo.com

edit: No need to use the Direct Download link on FileHippo's website. They abandoned that. Just use the green rectangle shown in the screenshot below.
Just be sure to uncheck the other junk it offers to install:

Once installed...
...right click on the folder of interest
...select Unlocker from the context menu
Deal with the User Account Control - if needed.

Once Unlocker opens...
If nothing is locking the folder(s)...
...select Delete from the drop down menu in the lower left part of the window
...then click on the button named OK.

If something is locking the folder(s)...
...select Delete from the drop down menu in the lower left part of the window
...then click on the button named Unlock All.

Be careful. Unlocker is powerful and dangerous. You might want to uninstall it after using it.

Hi,

my friend asked me to enlarge his local disk with OS (don't have enough space on it). I have done it few times before with different computers - format neighbouring local disk, add requested space to the first one and create second local disk from the rest of the space. But it does not work with this computer, I cannnot erease, format, delete the neded disk. The option "Format" is grey in Disk Manager and when I tryed Acronis, it said it deleted the disk, but it only makes the used space smaller. Do you have any idea how to solve it? (I would prefere to not to reinstall it).
Thank you

My computer crashed a while ago so I reinstalled 7. Now I have a folder in C: that has no name and is impossible to delete. My hard drive is small and this folder literally takes up more than half of it.

The error is that I need permission from myself to delete it. I have already looked at many threads and tried to solve this but nothing works. I already have assigned permission and ownership to myself and tried deleting it from safe mode. It theoretically has data from a previous install but I can't access anything in the folder. I just want to get rid of it.

Here's some printscreens:

Welcome Matt to the windows 7 forums.

Of course you are logged on as administrator?

If it still can't be deleted then I could be time for a format and re-install.

There are probably some bootable CD's that might allow you to delete the folder
and it's contents. I Recommend that you search the site for linux cd's that will allow you to boot into linux and then you should be able to remove the directory.

Maybe someone else can remember the name of the bootable cd that will allow y ou to delete the directory.
Or, have you tried to boot your windows 7 original disk and the going to the repair option and dropping to the command prompt and removing the directory that way"?

The log on screen is normal and any user can be selected to log on. But, when selcted to log on, it loads personal settings, flashes the desktop and immediately logs off and saves the settings. I can not get to the desktop, so I can not scan for viruses or delete files. I really don't want to hear the computer is forever inoperable. Any advice would be appreciated!

A:How is this even impossible?

Sounds like you may have an OEM System Builder versions of Windows 8. It is intended to be installed by someone or a company building a new computer that is to be resold. That particular version includes a personal use license which allows anyone to buy an OEM System Builder copy of the software and install it on a (new or old) PC that is intended for personal use. It should have come with an installation key.

Here is some more information on the ZDnet web site.

Hey guys it's me again with my annoying and those that seem to be impossible-to-fix-problems.

Well 3 months ago i bought an AMD 5600+ Dual Core and i had lots of problems since then, believing it was defective, i wrote to AMD support and requested an RMA. My replacement arrived today. It fixed LOTS of random crashes and my computer was able to boot up properly with both rams placed on in dual channel. I went to play on Soulstorm, it crashed, sometimes half way through a game or sometimes about 5 minutes into the game. I went on another game which is Company of Heroes, it crashed too.

The only reason i tested these 2 games was because they crashed most of the times when i had the defective processor.I thought it was the RAM but i thought it wouldn't make any sense because while waiting for my replacement to arrive, i put in my old AMD Athlon 3500+ and it worked fine with EVERY SINGLE games so it couldn't be the RAM and it can't be the replacement either. Not knowing what else to do, i took one stick of ram out, and guess what? It worked like a charm ! I really have no idea what's going on inside but if anyone had been through this or anyone who knows how to fix please help and....ermm if it works you'll be able to rest assured that a person on earth is grateful and just wants to kill you with hugs XD

BTW this is my spec:

I have a folder in my external terabyte that appeared some time ago. I can not delete it with any software. I tried to delete with DOS and it says all the same. The problem is that it will not let me downgrade it to a write-able format. It seems to be locked in READ ONLY status. I have attempted to take ownership of the drive and the files, but I can not get rid of it. When I first noticed it, it was random letters. When I tried to delete the file it turned into many many "Z's". When I ran the DOS delete protocol it changed into 6 "Z's"; with in that folder is a empty folder called "Update". Since then I have not been able to do anything about it. I don't know what to do. I even downloaded a program called Delete on Boot, and still no success. I have been coming here for about a year when I caught the Rogue Internet Security 2010. It was since then, 12/30/09 the day that i reformatted to yield to the virus's victory that the file first appeared in the external hard drive. I am wits end and I know someone out there can help me. Please tell me what to do. I was told that it was very complex and destructive hack file. Am I infected again?

If you have a recent restore point you can go that route and restore your computer to a point before you changed this.Any other programs or settings will revert back to that time.

I have a relatively new Dell XPS 410 running Windows XP Media Center Edition. I am extremely exasperated over a problem that seems unfixable. Every time I start the computer, I get a pop-up appearing right before the user log on screen. It says "Fixed" and will not let me exit out, so I can only perss "OK" to bypass it.

I bought a Belkin 'N' Wireless Router+Modem. It would not make a connection to my ISP.
I have spent HOURS [Literally] on the phone with Belkin Techs and my ISP.
Changed settings - patched etc etc etc.
Belikin replaced the Router+Modem with an N+. SAME RESULT AS ABOVE.

A retailer lent me a NetGear G Router+Modem - SAME RESULT AS ABOVE.

Today a telephone engineer came and checked my line for faults. FINE. A1.

Now, my Speedtouch with Router WORKS.

So...EVERYONE says it's impossible that the others DO NOT work.

I'm told that if you simply plug a modem into any phone point with ASDL- you will get an ASDL light. I don't with the new stuff.

My friend does.

OK, this is not a hasty reaction - I've had a laptop with Windows 7 for over a year and I cannot use it, at all. I've tried many, many times over the last year and it has wasted hours and hours of my time just trying to do what I do on my XP desktop. Please don't try to dissuade me - I HAVE TO put XP on my laptop now. W7 is a joke - trying to find files on a memory stick took me an hour today - where was the View button? Where was "arrange files by name"? Instead of some random order courtesy of Microsoft. OK so it's a right click but I want a button! I mustn't go on. I have an XP disk - I could just overwrite W7 and get rid, I think. I am really just asking whether I could/ should keep W7 in the background somehow - in case I am forced into ditching XP at some later stage when MS decide to cease support on it. However if it's complicated and takes more hours of my time, then forget it. So do I just insert my XP disk and go? Or what?

A:W7 impossible - need XP back!

Well you bring up two questions. First is how to install Windows XP and second is should you keep windows 7 in the background.

To install Windows XP, insert the disk in your cd drive, reboot the computer, hit any key to boot from CD, and start the installation process. You have the option to use the whole drive or not. That sort of depends on whether you already have a Windows 7 disk available. If you're that unhappy, I'd simply install Windows XP and be done with it. Sounds like you're unable to get Windows 7 to work as you'd like it, why fight it?

As a cautionary note, make sure you BACK UP ANY DATA YOU DON'T WANT TO LOSE prior to starting the installation of XP. Shortly MS WILL be discontinuing support for XP, but I believe that's in 2014. You still have some time.

One other potential option available to you is if you have Windows 7 Pro, Ultimate, or Enterprise, you are licensed to download and install Windows XP Mode which allows you to run both at the same time.

Hello,

First i'm french, so sorry for my bad words or setences.

I use a acer computer with vista sp1. I've got 3 parts on my hdd.
That is to say an eisa part for recovery, second part C: for vista premium and a third one for datas.

I've downloaded seven on the microsoft website and burn it with nero 7 and imagburn.

Noone works correctly, the best is that one i've burned with imagburn. speed 2.4 on an rw and 4 with an r

Each time i try to install seven, i've got the install page, i press "' install now"', and i received that beautifull message ..

"' windows couldt not collect information ( for os image ) in the specefied image files ( install.wim ) does not exist "'

I've checked my iso disc and the "' install.wim "' really exist on the dvd.

An other detail, each time after pressing "' install now "' and before the beautiful message my floppy tries to run.

If you have ideas or tips, they are welcome.

Sincerely yours,
Labougie,

A:impossible instal of seven

It is probably your installation media causing the problem..

This happens when it cannot verify the install.wim image on the DVD.

Try changing DVD discs brand, or using an external DVD rom drive. Perhaps yours is failing. If anything else fails, try installing from a USB stick.

Hey Hey - Happy Holidays all!!

Got a machine running XP Home SP1 and it started having strange IE problems, like not displaying backgrounds on some sites [they were mostly php Nuke sites]; then it started crashing all the time when going to Windows Update site. Then started crashing all the time unpredictably and couldn't find a pattern.

No virus [Norton clean], no spyware or adware [Webroot SpySweeper clean]
Tried reinstalling XP but to no avail
Tried to install SP2 in hopes that it would over write problems, BUT it WILL NOT install - - goes for a while and then just stops - - no messages, nothing, just stops install - attempted it 4 times and got a partial install is all; had to uninstall that.

Any ideas? Please!!

Thanks all and have happy, healthy holidays

Ron

A:IE impossible to solve? What else can I try?

I don't have XP so I have no first hand knowledge of it. However, you will find links to articles about failed SP2 installs in this list;http://www.scotsnewsletter.com/best_of/xpsp2links.htm

As for your original IE problem, I wonder if you can still try to 'repair' IE like you could in the older OS's?. To do it, you went to Add/Remove, selected IE to uninstall, and then were given the option to repair it.

Assuming that is still possible in XP, I am not saying it will help your problem because I just don't know.

Hello Deee,I see that you have an HJT log posted here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/208223/hijackthis-log-something-about-win32/ We do not allow more than one topic for the same computer and the same issue as this causes confusion, and in this case may make the disinfection process more difficult. This leaves you with a choice:1) Have this thread reopened and the HiJack This log topic deletedOR2) Keep this thread closed and wait for assistance in the HiJack This log forum. Please note that that forum is VERY busy. Please send a Private Message indicating your choice.Assuming you wish assistance in the HiJack This forum, you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a HJT Team member, nor should you continue to ask for help elsewhere. Doing so can result in system changes which may not show in the log you already posted. Further, any modifications you make on your own may cause confusion for the helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer. From this point on the HJT Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean. Please be patient. A:Pop Up impossible to remove

Here is a quote from the spybot forums on this subject

The problem with the DSO Exploit is a little bug. We have already been able to locate and fix it, but unfortunately it was not included with the last update. It will hopefully be with the next one.
The DSO Exploit is a security gap in IE. Microsoft did already repair this, so if you have all Windows updates and patches installed, it is not dangerous for your system.
I hope that explains the situation.

If you want to stop it appearing in Spybot do this Click on Mode/advanced/settings/ignore products then tick it in the list that appears and it wont show anymore

Hello!

For about 2-3 days now, it's become impossible to load certain websites. These websites include www.mediafire.com, and there is software called "Hamachi" to simulate a virtual lan server, which also won't connect at all. Hamachi gets stuck at "Probing" and mediafire.com completely fails to load. I have used websites like isitdown to check if mediafire is down for everyone of just me, and it's just me.

I have restarted the router 4-5 times, and I've tried accessing it from all computers in our home, but none of them work.

I am using Windows 8 and am with MWEB.

Please help,
Ruben

A:Internet near impossible to use

That sounds like an ISP problem
it is quite likely blocked by your ISP
I have friends in SA who inform me that when they reach close to their monthly limits, sites like mediafire and other sharing sites get blocked
Most SA ISPs do severely limit what you can download and give what is seen in rest of the world as very low bandwith limits for a very expensive price

Check with ISP first

Nobody can connect to my server, my server isn't even detecting other people trying to connect to it.

I used www.canyouseeme.org and I get
Error: I could not see your service on *ip adress* on port (1176)
Reason: Connection refused

This is happened to me many times for as long as I can remember, only some times it will actually let me port forward certain things. Can anyone share some information to get me on the right track and possibly fix this problem?

Thanks.

Had to reinstall my network driver to get as far as we did, we have connection! The issue is that the internet doesnt connect still. Both connections say enabled and when you go into repair tells me:
the following steps of the repair operation failed: renewing the IP address
we have tried to go into command prompt and put in commands for release and renewal and still not working.. any suggestions ??

ps please remeber im new to this and doing it alone now. My friend has since left for his own life (hehe) might have to talk slowly on explinations for this one..

I have what would seem at first to be a very simple problem with my wireless mice, but all of my attempts at solving it have yielded no progress. I am hoping for someone hardware-savvy to help me out. Here's my schtick:

I began experiencing skipping with my wireless mouse just subtle enough to irritate me and throw off my game (Dota and the like) a few weeks ago. I was using, at that time, a larger Logitech mouse. Unfortunately, I can't recall the make of it, but I had been using it for at least two or three years. One of my front USB ports on my machine doesn't work at all, but I tried the back of my tower and also on the side of my secondary monitor. No improvement. So naturally, I concluded that either my mouse or receiver was just aged and in need of replacement.

I have now been using this Logitech m510 for a week, but the slight skipping is still there, at times more or less noticeable. This led me to believe it was a trouble with the surface of my wooden desktop. I cleaned it thoroughly-- nothing. I tried a mouse pad-- nothing. The receiver is in clear sight directly beside my shoulder, so I would like to think that interference could not possibly be so sensitive. Where is the trouble? Coincidentally ALL of my USB ports?

My PC is a decently powerful machine, I built it within the last year. I am running Win7 64-bit from a Corsair Force 3 SSD with an i5-2500k CPU and 8GB of RAM. My GPU is an AMD Radeon HD 6800. Any ideas? If you need more information fr... Read more
