Issue with external keyboard on Lenovo Thinkpad T430

Q: Issue with external keyboard on Lenovo Thinkpad T430

OK, Windows key on external keypad works OK. Windows key plus shortcut keys (for example, Windows +T in Chrome for opening a new tab) does NOT work. Normal alpha keys work AOK. Device manager shows the 3rd party external keyboard as installed without issue. The keyboard works on another computer (MacBook Pro 13") without issue. Keyboard in question is a steelseries 6gv2. Interestingly, the issue is also occuring with the Lenovo thinkpad's very own keyboard (Windows + T not working!). what gives? O/S is Windows 7 - have just acquired the T430 2nd hand, so trying to test everything is AOK, etc. I had an issue with sound not working via the lenovo's speakers too, but solved that (uninstalling realtek device drivers and letting Windows auto-install new drivers). I hate Windows with a passion, but sadly, this laptop is designated to be used as my astro laptop for working in the field (PHD2, ascom drivers, mount control, acquisition software, etc). There's pretty much nothing that runs native in OS X/MacOS sadly, so I'm being forced to run Windows crap. I've owned several laptops in my life, and never had an issue with an external keyboard working out of the box, so this is very frustrating. 15 years in IT, experience in many different operating systems (mostly UNIX or GNU/Linux to be bluntly honest). I haven't had a chance to RTFM yet for the T430, so I'm guessing it's a unique Lenovo config issue. Anyone got any ideas? Cheers, Dave

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I have a Thinkpad T430 type 23474W4 and a Thinkpad mini dock series 3 type 4338-15U. I already have a Lenovo LEN LS2223wC monitor hooked up to it through one of the DVI ports. I have a a Lenovo LT1952p Monitor that I would like to use as a second external monitor. Both monitors work individually through either DVI or VGA. However, I can't get them to both work at the same time no matter what configuration I use. I was told they didn't have to be identical monitors to work together. What am I doing wrong?

When I dock the computer and press the power button on the dock it doesn't recognize my monitor as the main screen. I have to hit a key (Windows 10) and put in my password hoping that it's doing that and then the screen comes up. If I reboot after that ... THEN.... it recognizes my screen as the main monitor. How do I fix this? The only time this happens is when I use it off the dock and then put it back on. If it stays on the dock all the time it does just fine. Any fixes for this? Thanks...

Hi all, First of all I would like to take a moment and write my history with this experience. Last year I had a Dell Precision M4500 (i7-720QM and nVidia Quadro FX880M) which it had to be my eGPU machine. But using FL Studio alot, the cpu didn't kept the pace so I had to make a change. My research got to my Thinkpad T430 because Ivy Bridge platform can get you up to 90% of peak performance of your eGPU solution. When I had my Dell M4500, I have ordered the EXP GDC V8 Expresscard solution at a pretty fair and decent price (Christmas sales) from Banggood. Shipping to Romania was quite long, almost 2 months. In the meantime bought from a local guy, a Dell DA-2 220W power adapter which I heard it is plug'n'play. After arrival, I found out that I don't have the PCI-E power adapter for the graphic card, in my case a Gigabyte Radeon 6850 OC 1GB. That's the only card I have so, I was aware that I might need a display monitor. After another months of searching, found out on Banggood the holy PCI-E adapter specialy for EXP GDC solution. To be assured , bought 2 cables (just in case ) because the shipping was 1 month and 2 weeks (long, I know!). Well, last night I was dying to fire it up, so I put my Panasonic TV ( don't have a display monitor, lame, I know...) and put all cables and adapters together, the expresscard in T430 and fire it. My specs :i7-3610QM, 16GB HyperX Impact CL9, 1600x900, Intel HD4000 iGPU, Windows 7 64bit.After Windows loaded, my Radeon 6850 was found in D... My company has several hundred T430 laptops being used with the ThinkPad Mini Dock Series 3, type 4337-15U.  The scenario is:* A USB2.0 Keyboard is plugged into the dock.* A completed powered off laptop is put into the dock and powered on.* The keyboard is not detected.* We have keyoards from various manufacturers (Dell, Lenovo, Microsoft).* There are no problems if the keyboard is plugged directly into one of the laptop USB ports.* Other USB devices seem to work fine (i.e., Mouse, printer, etc.)* We're running Windows 7 SP1.  All laptops have Bitlocker encryption enabled. I checked the BIOS settings and nothing really stands out.  Has anyone seen this before?  Any thoughts on how to remediate the issue? Thanks!

A:Docked T430 - will not detect external keyboard at...

Hi Wes,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to hear that external keyboard is not working in your Lenovo ThinkPad T430 when plugged into dock.

Could you try the below mentioned steps?

Go to control panel, Open Device Manager.

Scroll down to the bottom of the Device Manager Window, and click on ?Universal Serial Bus Controllers? to expand it.

Right-click on the first entry in the expanded list named ?USB Root Hub,? and select Disable from the context menu.

Right-click once again on that same ?USB Root Hub? entry, and select Enable from the context menu.

If it works, the list of items under ?Universal Serial Bus controllers? should refresh, and you should see some additional items in the list.  The USB ports on the docking station and devices connected to them should be working once again.

If the above said didn?t help resolve your concern, try uninstalling all the drivers listed under USB Root hub. Restart the system and click on scan hardware changes in device manager. System will auto detect all the new hardware and will install the drivers appropriately.

Hope this helps!

Best regards,
Mithun.

A:ThinkPad (T430) battery compatibility issue

HelloThe batteries for T410/420 are not compatible with T430, even Lenovo genuine ones. Because of T430 features hardware authentification of the battery installed. The batteries for old laptops like T410/420 don't have such features (authentification chips inside). This chip missing causes the battery being installed in the T430 can't be charged. So, you have to purchase Lenovo original battery for T430.

UPD
Lenovo original batteries for T430 are backward compatible with T420

Dear all,
I'm looking for some help to understand the possible causes of the BSOD that I've met randomly while using my new Lenovo Thinkpad T430 - 2349-PHG.
The BSOD is not the only problem I'm having. While using the Laptop, sometimes the screen starts to shake, then the laptop shuts down without showing the BSOD. Sometimes, the BSOD appears. Each time I've to restore the Loptop to a previous point in order to make it work.
I've tried to run memory test using memtest86+-5.01, after 10 hours work and 9 runs, there was no errors.
I've tried to use driver?s verifier, however, when I set it up to work, the BSOD appears.
Attached is the recommended ZIP file to analyze the problem, only two dmp files are available.
I hope that I get some help regarding this matter soon.
Thank you in advance for your time and help.
Best regards

A:Alt+ characters on Lenovo T430 keyboard

In order to execute those ASCII/ANSI codes, you must have NumLock on.  The involves the Fn (blue) key.  With it on, you then use alt  = the small numbers located on the lower right coner of keys to the right of the Trackpoint head.  This is not easy.  I prefer to run charmap.exe, minimize it to the task bar, and copy/paste the characters I need. I don't know if the old standard way (Num Lock On, ALT+nnn) would work with an external full keyboard.

Hi, Recently bought a T430 (Without Optimus). All's good except the Laptop Temp. The left Palm rest seems to get un usually warm, no matter what OS I am on. Its a dual boot by the way, Win 7 + Ubuntu 12.04.2. With Ubuntu or CentOS or Scientific Linux, the laptop gets unusually warm...The temp monitoring utility (lm_sensors) says that its at about 45 C. I get the same temp reading on Win 7 too, but somehow, the laptop just feels more warm with Linux than Win 7.As of right now, I am on Win 7 (for past 4-5) hours.....did some browsing, MS Sec Essentials did a full disk scan, I saw some youtube vids and was toying with some Perl Scripts, and the temp is at 45C, and the left palm rest is quite warm. Its warm enough that I have to stop typing every few minutes  Has anyone else noticed this issue? Is there a work around to this issue? Is there something I should worry about ? Please let me know. I installed the new updates a month ago. A:Thinkpad T430 gets significantly warm on Win 7 as well as Linux. How about a fellow T430 user ?

In my experience, Linux isn't as good with power management as Windows. 45 degrees sounds about right for a current-gen Intel processor due to Turbo Boost causing temperature spikes as you use your system normally. As for the warm left palmrest, the hard drive sits under there, so maybe the drive just tends to produce more heat. Assuming you have a conventional hard drive, give it a defrag to reduce operating stress (and hence power consumption and heat output).

I bought a Lenovo ThinkPad X395 three months ago from the Lenovo website and it has a bad phantom pressing issue. The 'b' key behaves as if it's been pressed down constantly. Sometimes it will ease up then will go back to bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb. The 'b' switch seems to be a problem but none of the other keys have the same issue. Even when the problem clears up temporarily there is a noticeable lag when using the b key, especially pressing it multiple times. I've hardly used it since I bought it and I am starting school in five days. It's pretty disappointing considering I bought a ThinkPad because they have such a good reputation for quality and reliability. The trackpad also jumps and the performance is far worse than expected even just for things like web browsing and Microsoft Word. I have reinstalled the keyboard and trackpad drivers multiple times and hard reset the computer. When the problem looks like its gone away it will be back again soon.  Before anyone asks the unit has not sustained any physical or water damage and is in perfect condition. I have only really started using it at all because it was going to be me school laptop and I'll be starting in a few days so I was getting it set up. Note, the delete key does not respond even when I'm in the BIOS. It works fine for a few moments then the trackpad starts making random selections.  When you try to open a minimized window, it maximizes and then minimizes it again in a split second. It makes a selection when you are only trying to move the cursor. It is extremely inconvenient. On top of that it is so hard to get hold of someone at Lenovo. I tried changing the sensitivity of the trackpad to no avail.

Hi All,  My '21 days old' ThinkPad T480 - Top of the line machine warms up at the top-left section of the keyboard, just above the vents!   I'm not sure what needs to be done. I raised a complain with the Lenovo Support and the technician who paid a visit today, apparently was ready to replace the motherboard, because he thought that I reported a heating issue with my machine. But that wasn't the case. I'm surprised though that they were ready to replace my machine with a new mother board, without knowing the exact issue.  Any ways, so all he did was replace the thermal paste on the CPU and GPU, I was okay with that, as I read in many forums that replacing the thermal paste helped reduce the heating issues.  Its only now that I'm starting to realize, that I don't think its more of a heating issue, but a SERIOUS design flaw in T480 machines.  The top-left edge portion of the keyboard that which is just above the vents, seems to start warming up within 30 mins of NORMAL usage. I don't see the fan doing its job either, may be its suppose to speed up at very high temps, irrespective, what I think is the problem is that the fan case that is connected to the vents, for some reason the casing touches the vents plastic body and that's transferring the warmness up to the place where ones left palm would naturally rest while typing.    It warms up to the extent that I can feel its not comfortable for me to ... Dear Lenovo, I bought a Lenovo W550s laptop last August, and last week I spilled water on the keyboard. Now, about 8 buttons on the keyboard (at least), don't work. I am curious, will the warranty help me in any way with any thing?  Also, I am looking for a replacement (internal) keyboard, and am having trouble finding one. I am pretty sure that the keyboard that shipped with my laptop last fall was not backlit, as the keyboard never lit up (unless I didn't know how to turn it on). Anyways, the Parts No.: 0C44952, ID No.: 57P1ZW, FRU No.:04Y2387, Model No. KM BL-105US.  When I looked up the part on Lenovo's website, it returned nothing: http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/partslookup.  So, my questions for you are:1.) Does the Lenovo warranty help me cover my malfunctioning keyboard?2.) Is the keyboard that I have, Parts No. 0C44952, a backlit keyboard?  3.) Where can I get a compatible keyboard replacement for this laptop? 4.) Will this keyboard replacement work? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA3DY3CW6149&ignorebbr=1 Kind regards,Spencer

With my new Thinkpad T490, it appears that the pointer / trackpoint occasionally behaves oddly. When holding down the center button and moving the trackpoint to scroll, I expect that the pointer would stay in-place on the screen and any vertical movement of the trackpoint results in scrolling. This is mostly the case, however, occasionally the pointer would "slip" on the screen making scrolling very annoying. This is even though the middle button is firmly held down and not being released. Is this expected behavior? I don't recall this happening on my old T460p, so I'm not sure if I have a defective unit or just buggy software/drivers.

Hi community, please your support Today I start my laptop and a BIOS message appears warning to update the date and time, I accessed to the setup and the date and time was changed to 01/01/2001 and time 00:00:00, I updated to today July 21t, 2018 8:12pm. I saved the configuration and boot continues.  Apparently the problem was solved and Windows 10 started. Now I have the following problem: It is not possible to use the keyboard in a regular basis, 2 letters by second, I have to wait 2 seconds to enter a letter, if I enter the letters a litle faster some of them are missed and the words and phrases are incomplete. Please need your feedback, I can not use the keyboard as I used to, as a reference, to write this message took me almost 30min,very frustrating Many thanks in advance for your comments and solution proposals Jose CollantesMexico

Good afternoon all,

I'm trying to help a friend out with the above laptop. The issue he has is that when he powers it on, it loads all the way through to the desktop screen, but he's left with a black screen and cursor.

Everything else up to that point works, he gets the Windows 7 loading screen, when it has gone to the black screen - pressing ctrl, Alt and Delete brings up task manager etc, as it should do, but there's just nothing displayed for the desktop.

Can anyone give me any advice on what to look for? I'd have thought it would be a screen problem, but as I said everything else works normally.

Incidentally, booting into safe mode, it does the same thing. You get the white text in the 4 corners saying 'safe mode' and also the current build of windows text.

Thanks in advance

Hi, I'm new here. I have a x230 Thinkpad whose keyboard is no longer working completely (some letters, arrow keys, and the space bar) after liquid was spilt on it. Now, we purchased an external keyboard and initially, it had worked well. Some time later tho, the built-in mousepad started to lag (sharing the same fate with the above dysfunctioning keys), so we bought a wireless mouse, too. When these two are used together, the external keyboard fails to work. Then, when only the external keyboard is plugged in (bec the mousepad works), as I press any letter/key, the monitor turns black and the laptop goes into sleep mode in no time. When I press the power button to unhibernate, the screen goes back to normal, until I press any key again on the external keyboard that it goes black and sleeps again. It's soo frustrating esp. when I need to type in MS Word. I tried to search for any troubleshooting for this but can't find any in any thread. The only thing that helps now is the on-screen keyboard, yet it's time consuming and distressing esp. when I need to meet a deadline. I hope someone can help me with this. Thank you in advance. Jane

Hi, Sounds like liquid splitting on laptop's keyboard lead to short circuit that any input signal from physical keyboard, including the external one, wrongly redirect as the power button and make Windows go into hibernation.Try to totally dismantle the laptop keyboard out and test if the external keyboard works. If it works, and your laptop connected with a docking that have power button on it, you can keep working with this setting. If not, you probably need to replace a new laptop internal keyboard.

Hi! I am experiencing a weird glitch that happens to my laptop keyboard.  Last weekend, I have discovered that only 5 and 6 keys work on the top row number keys of my keyboard. Also, F10, F11, F12, Home key and Delete keys don't work. Other keys are working. I have tried the keys multiple times but the don't register anything on the screen. I have tried booting in my linux system and the problem persists. I have tried multiple reboots, load optimized settings in bios  Upon testing the top number row, I have discovered that pressing 6, 7, and 8 key, simultaneously, registers an "equal sign (=)" on notepad, and 3, 4, and 5 keys registers an F2 equivalent click, which proves that the keys aren't broken.  Yesterday, upon booting up my system, all the keys seem to be perfectly working again.  However, last night (up until now)(out of the blue), the aforementioned keys suddenly didn't work again. Anyone having the same problem? Any solutions, guys? Thank you!
