XP Wins Firewire drive test, Vista and 7RC no competition.

Q: XP Wins Firewire drive test, Vista and 7RC no competition.

Has anyone else found this to be true?

I've just installed XP on a small form factor Aspire X1200 media desktop system and it has absolutely cleared up all the tics and traits that could have been hardware or software related so I'm jazzed about that (its not a lemon after all!).

The last test was Firewire write speed over a network. I have two X1200s and the other one has 7RC installed and I use TeraCopy to take my speed measures from. The Firewire connection is built in and it's a small 4-pin type to 6-pin at the external drive. Identical Firewire drives on both systems (750 gig LaCie).

The write speed to the drive on the 7RC ranges from 4.5 to 5.7 MB/s. The write speed to the firewire drive on this system, when it was under Vista's control was 4.8 to 5.2 MB/s consistently. Both would always seem to start a little faster, like in the 14-17 MB/s range but by the end, that was the average.

Now, XP write speed to the same firewire drive from a USB drive over the network was 26 MB/s (about 31 gigs in just over 20 minutes if that works out correctly). The write speed from yet another firewire drive over the network was 32 MB/s.

I had thought, well maybe the 4pin to 6pin cable was a bottleneck or something but such does not seem to be the case now. Choice of OS seems to be the bottleneck. It would be interesting if anyone had similar results or differing results, and maybe find out what, if anything can be done to get the speed up on 7RC. Doesn't bode well if 7 is really just a service pack of Vista becasue Vista shows no signs of correction either.

These X1200s also have a onboard eSATA port...hmmm, I didn't even think about testing that.

Preferred Solution: XP Wins Firewire drive test, Vista and 7RC no competition.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi Guys,

I recently installed Vista after having my machine running XP.

I have 2 WD 500gb drives that I have both put into external enclosures (both with 1 500gb partition each).

BOTH drives worked fine in XP. I stress this!

Now, here is the issue. One of the drives works fine. The other drive is showing up in Computer as "Local Disk" but does not recognise any partitions. In hard disk managment it says that the disk is in raw format. I took the drive into my friends computer (who is running XP) and the drive is still fine. Every file there and completely writable.

I read an article the following:

"The solution to this annoying problem (I had it on one PC), seems to be to locate and delete the file INFCACHE.1, which may be corrupted and causing the problem. To delete this file, you will first have to modify its permissions so the users group can access it (right-click on the
file->Properties->Security). INFCACHE.1 file. It's located at C:\Windows\inf (scroll down to the file). (Note: to see INFCACHE.1, you must set Windows Explorer to display hidden and system files) "

So i tried that, and it did nothing. I have installed all updates, nothing.

To make matters worse! I thought a reinstall of the generic driver would be enough to kick start the new driver cache. NOW when i plug the drive in, i get "Windows needs a driver to install this hardware" FOR AN EXTERNAL HDD, MAN WHATS WRONG!!! Vista looks online for the driver but does... Read more

A:External Hard Drive and Vista (this will test you)

Ok , i got the drive installed properly again. So I am back to where I started.

Here is a interesting update, I installed [email protected] Partition Recovery to take a look at the drive. The program doesn't find anything wrong with the drive. In fact, it shows that the drive does have the partition and that there is nothing wrong with it. So I can't even "restore" the partition because the recovery software doesn't see the drive the same way that Vista does (and the drive letters are the same, so active partition reports, "I:\ (Data Backup)" and Windows reports "I:\ Local Disk RAW Format".

Any thoughts from anybody this time....

Hi, a good number of people have experienced this - me too on one PC. Always worth searching the forum for possible answers.
Here's one of many such threads that should help.

1. Run Command Prompt as an Administrator. (E.g. Windows key + X, Click Command Prompt (admin) )
2. Copy/type the following and enter

reg.exe add "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Controller0" /f /v EnumDevice1 /t REG_DWORD /d 0x00000001

3. Reboot the system
My DVD drive was then automatically recognised. Yippee."

Next MozBackup. did the backup - it is a lump on Wins 7 desktop too. I do not know how to move the items into the right places.
Next syncing my bookmarks. set up the account on Wins 7. I tried to add a device (Vista). wins 7 gave me an error message that said

My CD-DVD drive makes my Latitude Dell D-400 crash with Wins 2000 if I connect it at boot up. The problem arose first when I was using WinAmp to copy CDs. It had been working perfectly.
The Bios recognises the CD driver. At one stage with the problem when I connected the Drive it found new hardware, looked for the driver (usbstor.inf in WINNT/Inf folder) and then crashed once I accepted it. At one stage it also gave me the message that the driver was configured incorrectly. So I then copied the usbstor file from another Wins 2K machine and put it on mine. Now it crashes once I connect the CD rom.

Dell are unable to tell me which of their CD drivers is the correct one for the Drive. The label on the back identifies it simply as a Dell CD/DVD drive. They also say it is a Wins problem because Wins should pick up the drive automatically. They mentioned that it might be possible to edit the Registry.

Dan O posted a reply on 6 July to a CD problem which the guy in the end found out was caused by dust. But his answer may be relevant to me.

In the registry under System/Control/Class that there are 24 sub folders all with the same address Dan O mentioned in his thread of 6 July (ending in ...10318). Would the fix that he describes in that thread be any help to me? The fix was as follows:

Anyway, I have a few questions on Windows Server 2008, Office 2007, and Windows Vista. You see, our IT is looking into these products and wondering if it would be wise to invest in them for the company.

Could I get some feedback from the community here on just what you guys think of these products and if we should implement them within our company? The company is quite large by the way. If you guys could respond with just your thoughts, loves, hates, any feelings (feel free to go into detail about the products), I would be happy to hear them. Thanks guys.

A:Wins 2008 serv, Office 2207 and Vista [moved from Security]

Many businesses are holding off on migrating to the three listed above until they have been weathered a little more and are more stable.

Personally, and many places also believe this, that sticking with Windows Server 2003, Office 2003, and Windows XP is the way to go for now until later. Many new PCs you buy from OEMs come with Windows Vista already. Whether you choose to use it is up to you, however if you have the licenses many like to wipe the new PCs and install XP on them.

Right now Windows Server 2003, Office 2003, and Windows XP are in their prime. They are very stable and have weathered quite a lot. Microsoft still supports all three and will continue to support them for quite some time.

I know for my old computer I need a network adapter and I've decided to go with a USB version. The new computer has the Intel Pro 10/100 Ethernet. I think it would be easier to go with a wired router, since it might cause less problems than with a wireless router, and our place is small so cables aren't really a problem.

I just want to make sure that I get the right network adapter. I only have 2 USB's on the old system, and in the past had tried adding a USB hub which never worked consistently, which is why I think a wired router should work better. Are there certain USB network adapters that are better than others? I looked at a LINKSYS Etherfast 10/100 Mbps which I'm assuming should work well, unless you have any other recommendations.

As for the router itself I know I need to get one that is compatible with Wins 98 and Windows XP. I only want good connectivity and I will not be using a network printer. Thanks. I am very new to this.

Hello im getting pretty tired of having to fight Vista on every turn.

Since an update some time ago my Firewire external HDD, My FireDTV-S and my Firewire camera is not found by windows vista on a normal boot up where units are connects to the PC.
I have tried following fix from MS without any luck.

To work around this problem, for non-compliant IEEE 1394a devices, configure Windows Vista to enumerate inactive IEEE 1394 devices. To do this, follow these steps:1. Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then click regedit in the Programs list.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue.
2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{6BDD1FC1-810F-11D0-BEC7-08002BE2092F}\ControllerInstance
In this path, ControllerInstance represents the controller instance number. For example, this number may be 0000.
3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD (32-bit) Value.
4. In the New Value #1 box, type EnumerateInactiveLink, and then press ENTER.
5. Right-click EnumerateInactiveLink, and then click Modify.
6. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.

If when the PC is started up i dont see the device in device manager, i the unplug and replug the devices and voila Vista finds new devices.

Now i dont want to have to unplug my hdd, or floppy dtv everytime i boot my PC. so whats up with Vista can i get a fix or refund... Read more

A:Vista Firewire Issue(s)

Hello Holmis,

Welcome to the Vista Forums.

When this first happened, you could have done a system restore to the point before the update was installed. If you have a restore point that goes back that far, it is still an option, but you will lose any programs that have been installed since then. This would remove that update. Info here if it is an option: System Restore - How to.

The only recourse that I know of at this point may be a reinstall. Be sure to back up all your personal files, email etc. If a factory computer, then there is usually a recovery partition with info on how to do the reset to factory, see the manual that came with the comp. Maybe someone else has a better idea?

Either way, when you do updates, install only one or two at a time so that you can figure out which one, if any, is causing the problem.

Hope this helps.

Hi all, my wife wants to hook her old JVC camcorder to her laptop but it does not "see" the camcorder. I bought a 4 pin male to male wire for the purpose, and have no trouble feeding my XP 'puter the video from her cam but I use a 4 pin to 6 pin wire.

The 4 to 4 wire could be bad, but I have no way of testing it. Also I know absolutely nothing of the Vista OS and have no interest in learning but my wife is more or less committed to it with her PC's.

Perhaps the 4 pin port on the laptop needs mending? Any suggestions welcome and thanks for looking.

Hey, everything is going great for me in vista64 so far. Just one problem. I am unable to digitize footage with my video camera in vista 64, the camera is not picked up, or if it is, when I try to capture, it fails after a few seconds. However, it works perfectly in vista 32. So I can only suspect that its the OS thats giving trouble as my firewire port and drivers for my system seem to be working perfectly in vista 32.

Is there any new updates for vista 64 that may cover this issue or is there any way that I can bring it to Microsoft's attention so that they may work on a solution?

Should have done my homework before building the box. 64 bit allows for access to more RAM and than means faster render times. Not being able to capture via firewire is a definite "show stopper".

I had been happy with 64 bit up to this point (all bells and whistles turned off of course). Another "EPIC FAIL" for Microsoft.

Anyone have any ideas .... at all ... on how to get this working?

A:vista 64 bit not recognizing firewire connection to camcorder

Go it .... after a ton of digging.

Windows Vista does not enumerate an IEEE 1394a device that you connect to the computer

A registry hack puts back the 32 bit enumeration ... and ... "bob's your uncle!".

After adding it, the firewire connection IMMEDIATELY recognized the camcorder and installed the drivers. Nice....

Below is the Microsoft KB answer...

"When you connect an IEEE 1394a device to a computer that is running Windows Vista, Windows Vista does not enumerate the device. However, if you connect the same device to a computer that is running Microsoft Windows XP, Windows XP enumerates the device successfully."

Note An IEEE 1394a device may also be referred to as a FireWire device.

"Windows Vista only enumerates a device that sets its link status to request enumeration. If an IEEE 1394a device does not report the correct status of its link, the IEEE 1394 stack in Windows Vista does not enumerate the device."

When connecting my Sony HC30 video camera to my computer Vista sees the camera fine using the 1394 firewire, but when I try to capture video from any software the computer crashes to a blue screen memory dump.

Vista is up to date, newest Directx installed. Newest Video card driver installed. Set screen resolution to 1024x768 to see if that would help it did not.

I have a Firewire drive plugged into a firewire port via a PCMI card why doesn't Win 7 let me see the drive? In device manger it shows the device but will not let me see it in my computer/explore or even mount it?

A:Firewire Hard Drive

Sounds like a clear driver problem. Get the latest driver from the manufacturer *or* see in Windows Update has a solution.

I have a 1 TB LaCie external hard drive connected via firewire to an HP Workstation running Win XP Pro SP 2. Whenever I reboot, the drive is not recognized by Windows Explorer (or anything else). It does not show up under Disk Management and I don't see it under Disk drives in Device Manager. The only way I can get it to be recognized is to turn off the drive and then turn it on again. Then XP recognizes it automatically. I don't want to connect via USB because I have conflicts (delayed write errors) when other USB devices are connected. How do I get XP to see the external drive automatically upon reboot?

Just looking for some opinions here---I have a Seagate External Drive---connected via fire wire port---Worked fine until yesterday. Now the drive spins but Windows can't find it. Did the whole trouble shooting thing, tried a different cable etc---but Windows still can't see it.

So there is a problem--and here is my question---Do you think the problem is the controler card in the drive housing or do you think its a beat drive? Is there anyway of telling? If it is the controler, do you think it would be worth it to crack open the case and remove the drive so I can save the data? Anyhow, just looking for some ideas and to see if anyone has experienced this?

Hi there,

I'm building a new system. Ive found an 8800gtx on scans website, it appears to be branded scanfx. The say "A Big Brand name card we're not allowed to mention. We guarantee 101% Satisfaction."

How good is this 8800gtx in comparison to say, an xfx or gigabyte model for example?

The only noticable differences are that it runs at 575mhz, whereas some of the other (more expensive) cards may run at 600mhz.

This card is under 300, which is amazing. Whereas some are over 400.. what do you reckon?

My Macbook Pro is from mid 2015 and it's already struggling with things big time and, as Black Friday is fast approaching, I am thinking to upgrade.A few of my friends asked if I would consider windows, and said how much cheaper they are, and I am having second thoughts. Here are the 3, I am considering:Macbook Pro 15" - i9,32GB RAM, ProVega20, 1TB SSD - 3,834Lenovo ThinkPad Extreme Gen 2 - i9, 32GB RAM, Nvidia 1650, 1TB SSD + Multi-Touch Screen + Wifi 6 support - 3,096HP Spectre x360 - i7, 16GB RAM, Nvidia GeForce 1650, 1TB SSD + Multi-Touch Screen, Wifi 6 support - 1,799I am going through a lot of courses now, learning video and graphic editing as well as doing a fair bit of LIVE streaming and will be using some device for NOTE TAKING (OneNote). When I had a little play with Lenovo's touch screen on a laptop, I expected it to be poor, but it was actually good!An Ipad Pro 11inch is ANOTHER 1,100 on top of a Macbook. So a top spec Macbook Pro + Ipad Pro would cost me nearly 5,000, what seems absolutely INSANE. No touch screen of WIFI 6 on MACs, that seems just crazy to me in this day and age.The only reason why I am even considering is because I also have an iWatch & iPhone XR. I don't quite know if I could even control devices and do "screen mirroring" and "Clipboard" between an iphone and a windows laptop or TVs.Is there anything "pro macs" that I am missing here? What would you do??
