Enable Promiscuous Mode

Q: Enable Promiscuous Mode

Hi All

I have just been trying to enable Promiscuous mode on my PC Network Card - im not trying to achieve anything dodgy!- just wanted to see how to do it

It appears my Card is able to be set in this mode but i cant find the setting in the Device manager/Driver

Preferred Solution: Enable Promiscuous Mode

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Some nics cannot be put into promiscous mode. If you could give me the make and model of the NIC I could probably help you alot better.

we have a problem wih 1 NIC. One is a VMware NIC and was set up as a Mirrored Port on the dvSwitch. The second NIC is a UsbToNetwork adapter which is connectet to physical DC. The problem is that we cannot receive any data except with a program like Wireshark
or WindowsNetworkMonitor if we enable the Promiscuous Mode manually. Then we get all the mirrored data. So, is the Promiscuous Mode required for ATA or enable the ATA by itself?
I found this in the GW configuration file:
  "NetworkListenerConfiguration": {
    "CaptureNetworkAdapterNames": [
    "CapturePromiscuousModeEnabled": true,

What does the line "CapturePromiscuousModeEnabled": true mean?
Does ATA enter the Promiscuous Mode? Or should another program enable the Mode that ATA can monitor this port?

Promiscuous mode capturing not supported by Message Analyzer ?
Really ?
Why ?
When ?

A:Promiscuous mode packet capture

The OS now does the capturing, we just listen to the Microsoft-Windows-NDIS-PacketCapture provider, which never had promiscuous mode to begin with.  We are working now with that team now in hopes that this has a high enough priority to make it in.
Perhaps some problems can be mitigated with Remote capture, but it depends on the scenario.

We have a VMware Enterprise environment.
I have tested Microsoft ATA and it works perfectly well with Port Mirroring but for that we may have to choose Enterprise Plus.
With our existing infrastructure, will the Microsoft ATA solution work if I configure both the DC and the Gateway in (Promiscuous Port Group)?
If yes is it supported by Microsoft?
I would appreciate the answer if someone has implemented the solution first hand or knows about a reliable article/source.
For simplicity please assume the unknowns, thank you for your help.

Looks like you're gonna stay a virgin, cause that ain't no high-end video card you got there.

Now on to the real topic. I'm not quite sure what you are saying as regards enabling VGA mode. All you need to do is make sure you disable any onboard vga chip in the bios (because you are using an add-on video card), and that's it. Your PC should boot and video should eminate from your card. Pressing F8 during boot simply allows you to select 'safe mode', which is normally used when you are experiencing problems such as misbehaving drivers. You shouldn't need to do this at all normally.

A:Cant Enable PAE mode

I'm afraid 32 bit windows 7 has a 3.5GB RAM limit no matter what. The limits then vary working your way up the 64 bit version ladder. (the unofficial PAE stuff for Windows 7 is unstable)

Actually, scratch that. Apparently the limit is 4GB for all 32 bit versions but starter :/

A:Can't enable hibernate mode

Hey there!                      Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues with help from the community!I understand that you have issues putting your PC in hibernation mode. Difference between sleep mode and hibernation: Sleep ModeSleep mode is a power saving state that is similar to pausing a DVD movie. All actions on the computer are stopped, any open documents and applications are put in memory while the computer goes into a low-power state. The computer technically stays on, but only uses a bit of power. You can quickly resume normal, full-power operation within a few seconds. Sleep mode is basically the same thing as ?Standby? mode.Sleep mode is useful if you want to stop working for a short period of time. The computer doesn?t use much power in Sleep mode, but it does use some.HibernateHibernate mode is very similar to sleep, but instead of saving your open documents and running applications to your RAM, it saves them to your hard disk. This allows your computer to turn off entirely, which means once your computer is in Hibernate mode, it uses zero power. Once the computer is powered back on, it will resume everything where you left off. It just takes a bit longer to resume than sleep mode does (though with an SSD, the difference isn?t as noticeable as it is with traditional hard drives).Use this mode if you won?t be using your lapt... The problem is "overcome" by disenabling "Enable Protected Mode" in the security settings of the IE Browser 8. Is this just my machine or are all recent browsers with the above options affected? I need to know so a big favour - please someone with IE8 go to the website "Marthascloset.co.uk" and place any item in the basket and try to confirm it. Does it go back to zero price? Hi all, I have just read a very enlightening article in PC Magazine concerning SP2 Security Center Spoofing Threat - http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1639276,00.asp The article says, essentially, that the XP Firewall could possibly be spoofed by malicious script which would tell it to "open the door" for an attack. I am probably not doing the article justice so please read it, as well as Microsoft's response.I am running XP Pro on one machine only. I am set as the Administrator and the only user. The article says, in part:"...The one mitigating factor that we found is that to change the WMI, and spoof the Security Center, the script has to be running in Administrator mode. If executed in Windows XP's Limited Mode, it will give an error, and not allow changes. Unfortunately, most home users who will be at risk, run in the default administrator mode."[The question(s) part:] What are the advantages/disadvantages of running XP Pro for a single user in Limited Mode? Where do I go to make the changes?P.S. This is my first foray into the world of BC outside of the infamous Privacy Tools 2004 thread in the Breaking News - Security Forum.

A:WinXP's 'Limited' Mode - How to Enable?

Your question is a good one, Xsara. A part of my present problem is lack of understanding with regards to what I find as a damnable part of winxp pro...the logon feature, and user groups in general. I too use xp pro on one machine only and have found it diffficult to with clarity and foresight manipulate the OS in such a way to accomodate my needs. If you don't mind killin' some time, references to the problems, not the fixes are within this post of mine and links within it:my problems (in particular, the most recent parts of the thread)and this, from a post re: freshly installing windows which kinda sums it up:the questions I had in mind... I've done it a half dozen times (re-installation) and know that variations exist and they do exert influences on the issues of system stability and speed of operation to an extent.Configuring the OS, especially winxp pro can be done well, or not so well. I'm in between with regards to my own experience.I'm convinced, from the very start of it's operation, that winxp is more friendly to a large corporation with multiple PC's in multiple locations with multiple users on each one than it is to the single user who initially wanted the extra security features within the file structures themselves and may have been sorta duped by the thought that it was better to get the most advanced operating system so that preparation for the future was assisted, as well. Naturally, I'd like to hear more from someone... Read more

Hey guys,

As the program is now I have the shift key disabled and the access interface hidden and the only way a user can get into the design mode or actual coding is if the user has the password. As of now if the user knows the password i enable the shift key and automatically close the program and ask the user to open it holding the shift key but the problem then is that what if the authorized user forgets to disable the key.

So my question is...Is after i verify that the user has the right password, instead of enabling the shift key is there any other way of opening the program in design mode? that is bringing the Access Db window??

Any help will be great thanks.!

I am using a USB device for Internet Service. I need to boot into safe mode with networking support. Is there a solution that USB port could be detected in safe mode , letting me use Internet

A:How can I enable USB Support in Safe mode

Your USB controller driver should load normally in Safe Mode. If not look in Device Manager to see if it is detected and in error. If so uninstall it in Dev Mgr, reboot into Safe Mode to see if it loads.

Otherwise install it from the Support Downloads webpage for your model PC, probably contained in chipset.

May I ask why you are working in Safe Mode?

Is this the original corrupt HP bloatware preinstall? If so you should strongly consider doing what most tech enthusiasts do and Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7,
or at least Clean Up Factory Bloatware.

I've recently had a problem with Windows, and I can only boot in Safe Mode. Everything there works as it should. However, the drivers for my CD burner do not activate in safe mode.
In order to fix my problem, I need to create a recovery disk for vista, and I have the disk image (iso), and the software needed to do it. Only I can't, because of those pesky little drivers and their reluctance to run in safe mode.

I know it is possible in XP to solve this issue through regedit, I simply wondered if anyone knew how to load the necessary drivers for CD burning in Vista's safe mode.

Thanks in advance!

I am fairly computer literate. I am running WinXP on an AMDK7/600mHz machine with plenty of memory and harddrive space. When I added SP2 to WinXP, among some other things the AutoProtect Mode in my NAV 2003 application appears permanently disabled; even though I have gone through all the enabling steps (NAV Options), AutoProtect won't run. I have run a complete NAV scan, both from my application and from the Symantec site. I also regularly run updated versions of SpybotS&D, Pest Patrol (plus the full suite of PP products like MemCheck, Clean, etc), Ad-Aware (6.0 Plus) and HijackThis (1.98.2). I have scoured the Symantec and other KnowledgeBases for details on AutoProtect not running, but I've either tried all the remedies--except uninstalling, then reinstalling NAV--or the suggested remedy does not fit my situation.

As I've discovered, NAV is very difficult to uninstall; the reinstall is likewise difficult, even if it's an Upgrade and NAV detects any remnants of the previous version. I've even had problems upgrading to a brand-new licensed program (such as when I installed NAV 2003). So I've tried to avoid the NAV uninstall/reinstall "solution" 'cause it's seems to be so difficult.

I know how to use Regedit to search/modify the Registry, but I'm reluctant to try anything unless I'm following a very specific checklist from a reliable KnowledgeBase (like Symantec or Microsoft). I know I have at least one Pest ("buried deep in the operating syst... Read more

Hi and welcome to TSF!

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download Index.dat Suite to clean out all the temp folders. Do not run it yet.

Download CWShredder and click on Fix (it will automatically fix anything it finds for you). If it asks if you want to delete a certain random file, choose No and post that filename here.

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure
that the System Files and Folders are showing/visible also.

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer. After we are finished with your log file and verified that it's clean, you may turn it back on and create a new restore point.

Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up).

Make sure to close any open browsers. Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click
Kill process for each one if they are still listed (they shouldn't be - but double check it):

To enable and use Safe Mode, follow the inline steps:
1. Click Start and click Search.
2. Type cmd and press Enter. cmd.exe appears in the results list.
3. Right-click on cmd.exe. An Advanced icon displays on the lower, right corner of the screen.

5. Click Yes to continue.
6. Type bcdedit /enum /v on the command prompt and press Enter.

8. Now, you need to add the identifier of the Windows Boot Loader with a description. For this scroll down to the Windows Boot Loader display. Right-click and select Mark from the popup menu. It will highlight the identifier. Press Enter to copy it
9. Go to the command prompt where you typed the command, right click and select Paste from the popup menu. The identifier gets copied after that command.

My HP notebook computer suddenly lost function in all 4 usb ports (3 are usb3 and the usb2 disappeared entirely out of device manager). After trying to fix it myself and working for 2 hours with HP tech support, they still don't work. It's out of warranty so took to local repair shop. They say files are corrupted and it needs a clean install of Windows 7. I am an old, crabby woman living in the winter in Florida. All my software is in Michigan so I really don't want to do a clean install right now and lose all my software until I drive back up north in May. (No, my house in MI is locked up tight and there is no one who can get into my house with the snow they have been getting.) Tech guy said maybe a workaround would be to press F8 and enable test mode so the USB drivers would work. He said he would try it and call back. He hasn't called back, so who knows if it will work. Will it? If not, anyone have a better idea short of reinstalling windows? Would upgrading to windows 8 get my computer to recognize the drivers?

Hi there
WHY MS do you have to make Enable protected mode an all or nothing setting

I have a Media server that needs to open but this fails unless I turn OFF enable protected mode
All I need is for this site (local host at to be an exception.

Anybody know if this is possible to do. (IE11 in Windows 8.1)

The program is actually Logitech Media server -- works fine normally until IE11 had this thing about Protected mode.

Before I found the trick I did all sorts of things like disabling IPV6 (registry entry needed) etc to no avail --kept getting couldn't access the site !!! (localhost !!!!).

This would prevent casual users from seeing the routers wireless signal although there are still plenty of ways around this.

The setting is listed under Getting Started with Netgear Genie which is #2 under contents, page 27 shows where the setting is in the link below.

          - From this point I have tried to shut down from the close option as well as uncheck enable integration features at start up. Status is in Hibernation and has not changed.
Your help will be greatly appreciated.  Thank You
