Blu Ray Burner for Lenovo Y580 Laptop

Q: Blu Ray Burner for Lenovo Y580 Laptop

I currently have a Lenovo Y580 Laptop computer with a dvd burner optical drive. I am wanting a blu ray burner where I can watch iblu-ray movies, and occasionally burn files to a Blu ray disk. I have found this drive, but I'm not sure whether it is compatible. It appears there are several different sizes for optical drives. Any idea whether this will physically fit in my laptop? Thanks for your assistance.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Unless it is designed for that machine, and it states that it will work, I doubt very much that you can use it. Laptops, in particular, are very proprietary in hardware, and though some few standard pieces may be interchangeable, for the most part, even the connections for optical drives are often the company's own. You'll need to get a drive from the manufacturer or one that they say will work. (Or advice from someone who has actually gotten one to fit.)

Alternatively, you could look into an external case with a USB connection for a BluRay drive. Since most people rarely use them, except for data storage (double-sided ones can hold 50 GB's which makes a great storage medium) or videos, and they are expensive, it may be best to buy just one that can be used on all machines and keep for future ones. I have found no problems with speed playing BluRay over a USB 2.0 connection (In the worst case, the contents could be copied to your hard drive before playing, anyway, though I have never had to do that). And, of course, since a drive that supports all optical media for both reading and burning is only slightly more expensive than those that support fewer types, it is worth the money to get a good drive. Just another idea...............

Hi,

I own a Y580-M772CMH 15.6FHD/i7-3610QM/8G/ laptop with Windows 7 and a few weeks ago I used Ccleaner to clean the registry. Like the dumb stupid person I am I did not pay attention to what it was "cleaning".

Next time I booted up my Laptop it failed to start Windows and gave the following message:

Check cable connection!
PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel PXE ROM.
No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key

So next time I pressed F2 while booting to see:

Boot Device Priority
Internal HDD: SAMSUNG MZMPC064HBDR-000L1
SATA HDD: ST1000LM024 HN-M101MBB
SATA ODD: Optiarc BD ROM BC-5550H
Network Boot: Atheros Boot Agent

To me it looked like I still had both disks working so I put in a Windows ISO before boot to see if I could repair. The System Recovery Options screen showed me no known existing OS on the device.

So I powered down and used One Key Recovery which told me when I clicked to restore to factory conditions that the partition layout has changed.

Finally I used a bootable Partition Wizard and that showed me this:

Note the negative used value at disk 1.
To my layman's eyes it seems like the SSD and HDD, that are normally combined by a Lenovo software Raid are now separate. And something I deleted with Ccleaner by accident caused it (probably).

Main thing is, I actually don't know what the problem is and so don't know how to proceed.

I'm afraid my data is lost to me, which isn't a terrible loss, but am I correct in assuming... Read more

Hello, As stated in the title, I have a Lenovo IdeaPad y580. I purchased it approximately three-and-a-half years ago, and only now is it really beginning to chug durings its processes. Point is, I want it to last perhaps another half year or so while I finish saving up for another computer. As a gamer, I'm fine with the limitations of the GPU, but sometimes my laptop legitimately has issues processing stuff, such as loading Google Chrome properly. I know enough about Windows to clean out viral matter and uninstall programs that I don't use that are running in the back. But does anyone have any tips or tricks to make this hunk of junk last maybe six more months before it becomes unusable?TL;DR I need to make my laptop run at least a reasonably sub-average to average level for six more months. Any tips are appreciated.

I'm 11 and using Ubuntu 17.04 Linux on my Lenovo Y580. The problem I'm having seems to effect every operating system I've used on it. The touchpad flips out randomly and sometimes stops working at all. Sometimes it will start to work but only for so long. It's will massively teleport up and down until I start hitting it a little bit, but this is bothering me and hitting it probably makes it worse. Any help would be appreciated. feel free to ask more advanced questions just because I'm 11. I will understand for sure.

Hi,

I need some help with bsods on Windows 8.1 OS. I'm not sure but probably there is my fault that this happens. I have Lenovo Y580 and a few months ago I updated my bios to version 5DCN40WW(v2.07), i downloaded it from Lenovo support website (in this time i got windows 7), then i decide to run Windows 8, but this bios was purposed for Windows 7 and now i cant find 'actualization' to my old bios wich was purposeed to Windows 8, I'm looking for version 5DCN89WW of bios to this Lenovo. Now I have 2-3 bsods a day, even after format, I've updated my drivers using SlimDrivers and downloaded actual drivers from Intel website,on the Intel website I had an information that product has been detected as Kontroler Qualcomm Atheros AR8161 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller (NDIS 6.30) but this device is unknown or unsupported (current driver:2.1.0.16) and same thing with Audio Driver for Intel Desktop Board, product detected: Sound Bluetooth (current driver: 12.0.0.2951).

I did memtest86:

Sorry for the delay in responding. There just aren't that many people who do BSOD analysis, so at times we get a bit overwhelmed!

AFAIK, you have the latest BIOS for your system.
Here's a link to it: BIOS Update for Microsoft Windows 7 (32-bit, 64-bit) - IdeaPad Y480, Y580

Out of 17 memory dumps there were 7 different BSOD error codes. The differing error codes are usually symptomatic of a lower level problem within the system. They are usually caused by one of these things:
- borked (broken) hardware (several different procedures used to isolate the problem device)
- BIOS issues (check for updates at the motherboard manufacturer's website)
- overclocking/overheating - You'll know if you're overclocking or not. If uncertain we can suggest things to check.
- compatibility issues (3rd party hardware/drivers)
- low-level driver problems
- or even malware (scanned for when we ask for hardware diagnostics from Initial Hardware Diagnostics or Hardware Diagnostics ).

You can get a head start on the hardware diagnostics if you'd like - they are located here: Hardware Diagnostics

Daemon Tools (and Alcohol % software) are known to cause BSOD's on some Windows systems (mostly due to the sptd.sys driver, although I have seen dtsoftbus01.sys blamed on several occasions).

Please un-install the program, then use the following free tool to ensure that the troublesome sptd.sys driver is removed from your system (pick the 32 or 64 bit system depending on your sys... Read more

Hello, I recently upgraded my home internet to a 5GHz dual band connection which I came to learn could not be utilized by my Lenovo Y580s wifi adapater : Intel Centrino 2200N. In order to utilize my new internet, I purchased a USB dual band a/c dongle at BestBuy for $30, the only drawback being a small piece constantly plugged in / using one of my USB ports (not a big deal). I was able to connect with this device at 5ghz and for the past few months everything was fine and I received blazing fast internet using this USB as my wifi. Recently I noticed I I've been losing connection speed and internet. My transfer rate jumps from 6MBs to 433 MBs as and everywhere in between while connected at 5ghz, and figured my usb dongle might be faulty. I unplugged the device to test it, and connected using the computer's normal wifi over the 2.4Ghz channel. To my surprise, while the signal was strong, my internet speeds were also jumping between 1mbs and 60mbs, essentially the same thing that was happening while using the 5ghz USB. In an effort to trouble shoot on my own, I did the following:- Did a full mallware / virus check ( was clean )- I live in a Condo so I installed INSIDDER software to check my wifi channels: no real problems there- Connected several other devices using both the 2.4 and 5ghz connection, including laptops and Iphones/Ipads. Hi! At the start I'll mention that I am an "IT guy" (actually IT student)  so I have some higher than basic knowledge about the stuff going on with my computers but now even I am lost... I will start from the very beggining of my troubles - that might be a long story!

So, one day (quite a bit ago) I was playing League of Legends with friends like I did for over a year after purchasing my Y580 and the in-game "bug splat" error occured. It is not something unusual, it happens to people a lot in this particular game so I was like "meh, again they f*** up something with the patch". Then the system notification told me that "driver stopped working but has recovered" or something like that, which was a first time for me. I googled the problem but before I could read anything the screen froze and I had a first BSOD since installing Windows 8 (and I have it for a year straight now). It was IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL pointing at nvlddmkm.sys, part of Nvidia drivers.

I started doing obvious things - ran Windows in safe mode, everything was working fine. Then I removed Nvidia drivers completely, including registry entries and stuff. System loded in normal mode and was working - previously the blue screen was appearing before my Windows 8 login page even loaded. I managed to play games on Intel HD GPU and do my usuall stuff without any problems - as expected to be honest.

I did a memtest back then, also did it few days ago for 6+ hours wi... Read more

Hi David

Since you are familiar with computers, i will cut the crap and go directly to the troubleshooting. Please follow the below steps.

1. First uninstall both "Intel" and "Nvidia" drivers completely from the system. Laptops require tweaked drivers  specifically created for them rather than generic ones. If the Nividia adapter is disabled via BIOS, please enable it.

2. Then uninstall "Intel Rapid Storage Technology" driver and "Intel Wireless LAN driver" completely. Current versions are not compatible with "Win 8.1".

Alright, so early I tried to overclock my Nvidia GTX 660m Card, and it worked. the base clock speed is 835mhz, and the memory is 2500mhz. I OC'd the clock speed to 970mhz, and the memory to 3000mhz. It all worked fine, and boosted my gaming framerate quite a bit in PlanetSide 2 and Skyrim. ( I used NvidiaInspector to overclock, btw.) I went back to the overclocking interface, and accidentally set the memory rate to around +1300mhz. I then, without realizing, clicked on set OC settings, and it crashed my card. It rebooted, but now whenever I go into Nvidia Inspector to check my clock/mem speed, they're both set on 405mhz while idle or if there's a high load on my card. It's been stuck like this for a few hours, and I've tried several tweaks to fix it, including a reboot, rolling back the drivers, and then reinstalling the drivers, etc., with no resolve. I really need some help, as this is affecting my gaming horribly, and I'm getting terrible framerates. Please give suggestions/fixes as quickly as possible!

Thanks,
DDInc

I saw a lot about could not find recovery environment and win 8.1 but I think i have another problem. My charger is not working properly sometimes it chargers sometimes not ( and i have to unplug and plug back the cable into the acumulator) and because of this, when I tried to open my laptop it's shuting down after 1 sec. This brutal shuting down happened for 5 times I guess and  since then every time I boot it says "scanning and repairing drive (\\?\volume(f030c5da-d83f-45ed-". So when I realized that something bad happened I tried to return my win 8.1 to factory but when i got to settings/ change pc settings/ update and recovery / recovery / REmove everyting and reinstall Windows it got this beautifull message "could not find recovery environment " What can i do to get things to normal ( to make windows recovery working again). I m not interested in my data I can erase everything PS: Please don't say it's because I change something at partitions ( I lost onekey recovery when I change something at partition but reinstaling windows to factory was still working until this charger problems)??

I've been using this laptop for around a year or so now, and it's worked perfectly up until this point in time.  The issue that I'm currently having is entirely mechanical. At the moment, my keyboard is intact and works just fine. However, if I press a key, (mainly the 'e' key) off-center, it pops the entire key up and I have to click it into place. It's not life-threatening or crucial to the machine's function, but when I am busy typing papers or lesson plans, having a key on the most constantly used vowel key continually pop up really puts a dampener in things. I've taken the key out and have tried to click it back in. While I can't see what's going on (given that there's a key in the way!), I can most certainly feel it clicking into place twice, both clicks stemming from the right side of the 'e' key. It seems that, to the best of my knowledge, only two out of four prongs that are meant to keep the key in place and in line are actually snapping and holding the key down. Whenever I type off-center and to the right, the entire left side of the key snaps up and must be pushed back into place. I'm wondering if there's anything I can or should do. Given that I've had my machine for over a year now, I'm unsure if my warranty still covers it (speaking of, is there a way to check warranty status online?). Please, if anyone has any advice on how to fix or replace a busted key/keyboard, please, let me know!

A:Lenovo Ideapad Y580 - Keyboard Issue

A replacement keyboard (chicony, oki, or dafon are the makers - be sure to look for the manufacturer label and p/n right below the lenovo p/n on the back to get a genuine keyboard) would make a good spares, they are about $30 on ebay. I replaced a broken key on a few different laptops but much prefer to swap out the entire keyboard.  Once a single key goes bad it's likely that more keys will start to fail (note that 'e' is perhaps the most commonly used key on your keyboard because it's the most popular vowel.  Other popular keys like 't' might be failing sometime soon).  So I would suggest you buy a spare keyboard and save it until you can't live without it, the procedure to replace the keyboard is a 10 minute swap. If you want to replace a key, a sharp tipped (xacto-style) knife blade, and a loupe (magnifying lens) are important accessories.  Buy from a reputable site which has good instructions ( http://www.laptopkey.com/ ).  Unfortunately, the key and hinge are manufacturer-specific (OKI, Chicony, Dafon, see above) so you will need to determine it from the guide on www.laptopkey.com.  When I fixed our Acer c720 I also used needlenose pliers to bend a metal tab back into place, the key hinge wasn't seating correctly because the metal tab had bent and was open too wide.  The Acer c720 has a nightmare keyboard to replace with 75 different locking plastic tabs that bind it to the undersize of the palmrest, so i had little choi... Hi all;
Need to ask how to hid all the partitions in the factory installed HDD for Lenovo Y580.

This is the scenario.
Firstly, i successfully migrated all of the following partitions:
OEM/Hidden partition,
C partition: boot drive/ program files and data drive &
D partition: containing drivers

from my Lenovo factory installed HDD to the SSD and to use the SSD as the primary boot drive . Now, i plan to use the factory installed HDD as my data drive. (I am using a caddy tray for this whereby i plan to swap out the optical drive and pluck in the Lenovo factory installed HDD). However, for "safety reasons" i do not plan to re-format the entire factory installed HDD but rather to keep those partitions just in case if my SSD fails.

Hence, how do i turn all the three partitions above (in the Lenovo factory installed HDD) to become dormant? I want the computer to boot up from the existing SSD but then to treat the factory installed HDD as the data drive and not to read from any of the three partitions in the factory installed HDD.

ANy ideas on how to accomplish this? By the way, i am planning to use EASUS as my disk partition freeware.

I was trying to watch a DVD on my laptop and kept receiving an error from PowerDVD 10, saying that it was an invalid media type. After looking online, I noticed that some people said that the update might fix this. So, I downloaded the update and ran the installer. It required that I remove the current installed version of PowerDVD in order to install the patch. After the installer wiped that from my computer and began to install the patch, I received a message stating that "This software can only be installed on a Lenovo system." This was a patch file that the program sent me to, called "PowerDVD_v5630_RiTA10(Lenovo)(PDVDServDelayStartup)_DVD130802-14.exe" After looking at this, I went through the knowledge base and found that there is another file linked for updating the PowerDvd software called "Lenovo.Lenovo_RiTA10_v_DVD110707-07.exe". When I tried to run this I get the following error:"Cannot install the patch.Either this patch is not intended for your version of PowerDVD 10or your system does not havea previous version of PowerDVD 10 installed. The patch installation will abort." Of course I don't have any previous version of PowerDVD 10 installed, because the other patch uninstalled it in order to install. Now I am stuck without the DVD software in this terrible Windows 8 environment. I even tried VLC player and the video is cut off. This is very frustrating. This is on my IdeaPad Y580. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Since no one is of help it seems at technical support and I finally had some time for this, I was able to track down how to solve this. I used downloaded the installer for PowerDVD 10 from lenovo and then had to hack it. First run the installer (IN12STW153WW5.exe).After the installer fails, it will have dumped the files into C:\drivers\PowerDVD 10 BD\ (or replace C: with system drive I suppose).Edit the file Custom.ini (right click -> Edit)Change the line CLScan=LEGEND Dragon to CLScan=lenovoSave the file.Run setup.exe You can also skip running the installer and instead use a program like 7zip (or another compression program) to unzip the IN12STW153WW5.exe contents into a folder. Then go into the folder you extracted to and modify the file inside there.

I'm desperate for a solution because I have exhausted all more likely resources for solutions to my problem. My problem is that the option to burn factory reinstall discs have been removed. In the windows 7 version of this laptop, One Key Recovery provided this option. For win 7 laptops, this allowed people to reinstall the OEM OS on their msata SSD. Now that option is not there. I've burned a system image disc set, I burned a bootable system repair disc. I created a recovery flash drive on a usb stick. Neither of these windows 8 options allowed me to recover to a new drive on the same laptop. I really really hope someone can help me. This is ridiculous.

So I have a Lenovo Y580 Ideapad I bought circa 2013/14. I've kept it pretty updated and all since then. It had Windows 8 last time I was able to use it (a few months now sadly). Before this incident, it had already happened before but it would come back on after a few tries. One time it took a whole week of trying to turn it on and off and finally it just popped up again. But this previous time I accidently let it die (I always had it charging once this issue began because I was afraid it would die and do this) and it hasn't been able to boot. I've researched this issue and I've not been able to find one specific answer. So I decided to come here and have some seasoned techs look at my issue personally. I uploaded some videos on youtube in order for you all to get a look at it and what it does when I poke around at it. Also, Idk if it would be of any relevance, but before it died it had had a long standing issue of the touchpad not working. Occasionally it would twitch or work for a few minutes but it was mostly dead (the touchpad I mean). I was never able to fix it (also I just got lazy and bought a mouse). Here is video #1 so you get a basic idea of **bleep** it's doing: https://youtu.be/FwVumwp7MFAHere is video #2 of me poking around on it and doing the restart power thing (thass tha technical name right?) so you can see what it does and doesn't do:https://youtu.be/FwVumwp7MFAIf there is any more info I can give please let me know. I want to try and fix this myself, and am ... Read more

Hi All,

I have searched extensively for this issue but haven't found any workable solutions so I'm posting.

Recently purchased a Lenovo Ideapad Y580 and performed a fresh install of Win 7 Premium 64-bit on a new SSD. Installed latest drivers for all hardware but discovered after the install that my wireless adapter wasn't able to find any wireless networks (it worked find under Windows 8 when laptop was first unboxed). My wired connection works fine though, I am able to connect up to my network without issue using a network cable. Also, I am able to connect to my home wireless network without issue using another laptop.

In addition, the adapter icon in my tray shows a red-X on it. I've found many issues through web searches that suggest driver updates or hardware disable/enable steps but neither of these approaches have worked for me. I am holding off re-installing my OS until I've tried some more simpler and less time consuming options.

My system:

OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium, Service Pack 1, 64 bit

My Y580 case broke.  First it started around the plastic "grill" on the heatsink (on the left side of the laptop).  Soon it was the lower portion of the case around the hinge.  Then it was the other side of the laptop near the hinge and despite some gorilla glue and duct tape.  Now my Y580 case is in bad shape.  I went online to buy a new case and see that others have this same problem.  This is definately a design flaw.  It's not just me.  Will Lenovo fix my laptop?  It is out of warranty, but a design flaw is a design flaw.  I would hope Lenovo would like to keep a good name and a good customer.  I'm being honest here - if they don't I'd have to be a bit stupid to buy more from Lenovo.

have a Lenovo USB 2.0 multi burner that will not run on Windows 7.
It will run on XP and 2000.
Windows 7 cannot find the driver and Lenovo support is no help at all.
Is there some type of adapter I can get to make this drive work on Windows 7?

A:have a Lenovo USB 2.0 multi burner that will not run on Windows 7.

Maybe it is not compatible with Windows 7. I would recommend contacting the Lenovo support team via ticket and see what is going on. Meanwhile, I shall search for any compatible drivers. Would you mind going to device manager and posting the Vendor ID and Product ID that you can find by right clicking the device->properties->Details and selecting "Hardware ID" from the dropdown menu?

I am totally disappointed in Lenovo's customer support. My lenovo 710s was bought less than 1 year ago (as of 10/6/2017, when I sent it in for repairs) and had 2 years warranty (1+1 year of extended warranty). I sent my laptop for repair due to a white spot issue on the monitor, affecting viewing of webpages and videos. However, the laptop was returned after 3 weeks without any fixes/repairs, as Lenovo claimed that it was a cosmetic issue. I wrote a message on their customer care website on 3/7/2017. However, they ignored me and there was no reply to date.  I thought Lenovo is a reliable and popular brand. However, it turned out to be a horrible decision, much to my dismay!

Hello Everyone, thank God I was able to find this site again. Lost it awhile back, and just spent the past half hour trying to remember my Username and Password.

Anyway, I hoping someone can help me out here. I've bought a used Laptop without a burner, and would like to install one. Hard drive is only 12G and that can fill up pretty quickly these days.

My Laptop is an IBM ThinkPad T20 Model Type: 2647 - 86U

What I want to know is what kind of burners can I get? Is there such a thing as an external burner? Or is it something that needs to be installed into the computer. For example, I current have a regular disk drive and floppy disk drive that are inserted into a slot (can only use one at a time - interchangeable) and was assuming that burners for laptops came this way as well. I've looked on the IBM website (as I have no manual with this computer) as well as a few other sites as well with no luck. I know I can get a burner, they're just not being specific enough as to exactly what kinds I can use.

Something tells me that there is a ridiculously easy answer to all this. The problem is...I don't know what it is.

A:CD/DVD Burner For Laptop?

Internal optical drives are not universal to laptops like they are to desktops. The first question would be did IBM ever make a DVD/CDRW combo drive for this computer. If yes, then you might try searching eBay for a used one. If not, then you'll have to get an external USB burner.

I have a Toshiba laptop model M55-S325. It comes with a Matshita DVD-RAM UJ-840S DVD/CD-ROM drive. It's supposed good at burning DVDs, but I can't get it to work. I haven't search Google for help, and it seems that a lot of people are having the same problems as I am. I haven't been able to find any solutions though.

I am able to burn CDs but when I put a blank DVD in, I can't access the drive. Instead I get an error: "D:\ is not accessible. Incorrect function." I've already tried getting into the Properties of the drive and enabling DLA on the DLA tab and on the Recording tab, I clicked on "Enable CD recording on this drive". Neither of them works, and the latter option warns me that I will not be able to write to DVD-RAM if I continue.

This is kind of frustrating since I've used the burner about twice, and I need to burn some stuff into DVDs to free some sapce in my hard drive. Anyone have suggestions as to what to do?

Will it read DVD's? It could be the brand of DVD's you are using. It might be as simple as updating the firmware for the drive. Type msinfo32 in windows search and got o Components/CD-ROM. Google the drive and look for firmware upgrades. The best source is the drive manufacturer's website.A typical DVD drive has a CD laser diode and a DVD laser diode. It could be that the latter is malfunctioning. If you can read CD's, but not DVD's, the DVD laser is probably malfunctioning.

I currently have a Lenovo Y-580 laptop computer that I absolutely love. Only thing that would make me love it more is a Blu-Ray burner. I want to pull out the installed DVD burner and replace it with a Blu Ray burner. I have replaced optical drives on laptops before on several occasions and have found it simple with only one screw to remove. My question concerns optical drive size. It appears that there are several sizes on current day laptops. I have looked all over the internet, and cannot find the appropriate size for my Lenovo Y-580 laptop. I know that some are approx 9 mm, and some are approx 6 mm Any idea where I can find this info? Thanks for your assistance.

I am going to upgrade my CD/DVD combo unit that came with my HP Pavillion XT375 with a Toshiba SD-R6372 Slim DVD burner.

I have a couple of questions about this.

1) Do I have to take the computer apart to change out the drive, or is there a way to get the old unit to slide out and slide the new unit in?

2) Does anyone have any experience with this DVD burner? It looks like a pretty good unit to me. Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance,

A few months ago, i purchased a dvd burner in japan. i have an american laptop. ever since in installed the burner, my pc crashes. i use clone dvd and any dvd. i have no idea if it's the burner or the software. it especially happens when i'm making a back-up dvd. as soon as click on start writing, within 30 seconds my pc goes to a blue screen and says. it may be due to a software or hardware conflict. i've removed the hardware and software and tried again, but it still happens. recently, i started watching movies on my dvd combo drive, which is built into my laptop. even when the burner isn't connected this still happens. anyone have any ideas? it's really frustrating. is it b/c my pc and burner are from different countries? i've successfully made back-ups, but most of the times i can't, it just crashes. if i'm persistent, it usually works. Thanks!

Hi! The DVD burner in my Dell Latitude D530 has died. I did all the "checking" stuff and have decided to replace it. I was going to pay to have it done, but the internet forum folks convinced me I could do it by simply snapping out the old drive and snapping in the new. Now --several weeks later-- I still cannot read or burn CD's or DVDs, I have purchsed a drive that doesn't even remotely fit. And I cannot even find the most basic information about how to specify any drive but but the exact part number from Dell.

By the way--the drive that needs to be replaced is p/N c 3284-A00. I was hoping to replace it with a newer, faster drive. After consulting with the forums and shopping on line, I was advised to choose the Sony Optiarc drive which was supposed to be the correct one for this model. WRONG!

It's not even close. The drive is the right size but everything about it is wrong. The plug-in connector on the Sony drive is only half the length of the Dell drive and it's on the other side of the unit (left vs. right). I have tried looking up specs but cannot find anything that I can understand. I am completely frustrated and now don't even know where to go to start over. Any help out there?

Briefly,

Have just burned a DVD with the drive. Burn process completed seemingly normally and the disk ejected as it usually does at the end of the task. Problem is that reinserting it to check it was readable, caused first the burner software and then Explorer to stop responding, I got back Explorer and tried right clicking on the DVD Drive in My Computer to see if I could read the Disk, then Explorer stopped a second time. Restarting, it would not get past the Dell 'splash' screen and the DVD Drive was constantly spinning up.

The only solution was to go into Bios and disable the DVD Drive, to then access it through My Comp and eject the Disk.

Now have the laptop up and running, but need to know if the Drive is now kaput or is it the software. I burned 4 DVDs yesterday but did not reinsert them to check whether they had been done ok or not.

The software is CDBurnerXP and I'm on Vista Home Prem.

No other problems / issues have arisen.

Any feedback would be great.

A:DELL XPS Laptop DVD Burner Woes

Hmmm ... it seems it was the software.

For anyone who stumbles on this thread through the forums or via a google search, I would recommend you do not go for CDBurnerXP simply because it is freeware. Try instead searching for FreeEZCDBurner instead.

I will not link to it to avoid being accused of any sort of bias / vested interest.

CDBurnerXP worked in the past so it has done what I needed.

But not now.

Hi,
The burner on this laptop has stopped burning CDs correctly or at all. It initially seem to be because of switching to different media, but I switched back to ones I've been using for "years", and the failures persist.
I'm trying to determine if there is a replacement for ( and if so how do I determine that ), or just to get an external USB burner.
The burner is a Matshita DVD-RAM UJ890AS, and following is my system info:

I have just replaced the dodgy QSI SDW-042 drive in my Systemax Tourbook MS2137 with an SDW-082 on my dealer's recommendation. Mechanical fitting went well but the system will not detect the drive. The activity LED lights and the drive motor light spins up when the system is powered up and the eject button opens the tray. Drive not listed in Control Panel/System?Device Manager and all attempts to install it from Control Panel fail. Operating System is Windows XP Home SP2.

Refitted the dodgy 042 and it was recognised, listed in "My Computer" etc.

Powered down, exchanged it for the 082 but still no joy, complete misery in fact .

Where am I going wrong?
