PC Shuts down suddenly without warning

Q: PC Shuts down suddenly without warning

I've been struggling with this for months and am at my wit's end. Any help anyone could offer would be greatly appreciated!

Basically, without warning, my computer, for no apparent reason, shuts itself off. No shut down. It simply shuts off, as though the power had been disconnected. (It might be worth noting that on starting it back up again, chkdsk doesn't run.)

At first, I though it was a random occurence and likely a hardware problem; possibly the Power Supply. However, my MoBo is set to power up the computer after losing power and, after one of these unexpected power downs, the computer doesn't start back up until I hit the power button.

I've also started to notice a link to downloading. Namely, if there's multiple downloads going on, it seems to trigger the problem. It shuts down almost every night, which is when I've got utorrent scheduled to run, and I've been able to trigger the problem reliably by initiating multiple downloads of podcasts in iTunes. It also seems to happen sometimes when web pages are taking too long to load.

It's probably important to note that the computer functions perfectly otherwise. I can tax the system with the latest games or a heavy set of video transcodes without incident, so I'd have a hard time believing it would be a heat problem.

Preferred Solution: PC Shuts down suddenly without warning

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'm not an expert by any means, but I guess there's no harm in having a bit of (possibly helpful) input...

It could have something to do with a faulty hard drive...I had something not so long ago where I had a lot of damaged secotrs, and copying things between disks would restart my computer (and sometimes never let it start back up)...

Have you got a spare drive you could test? Or if you have multiple drives, set the other 'good' one to the default download location and try to induce the problem.

I dont know what anyone else thinks of this...it could be completely wrong, but I guess there's no harm in trying!

Two or three things have happened recently that make me believe that i am infected and hence am requesting help in this forum

Last night my laptop shut off all of a sudden - and i mean all of a sudden (did not boot down or warn me) like somebody flicks off a switch and the lights go out. At first I though it was the power but i was well plugged into the electricty socket and i also had battery back up.
This has happened twice before say a month back and three months back respectively but i did not give it a too much thought attributing it to freaky power fluctuation. Further, the time gaps between occurences were far and random
When i rebooted win 7 (64 bit with SP1 and completed up to date) asked me do a startup and system repair whcih i did and after a long wait i got a report saying

A:laptop suddenly shuts off without warning or boot down

There are only about five things that will cause a spontaneous shutdown. Overheating, bad power supply/adapter/powrer source interuption, flaky NIC, motherboard, or very rarely the processor. I'd check to see if it's overheating first and move on from there. Does it feel especially hot? Have you blown out the heatsink and fan area? Is your adapter making a good connection? Will it run on battery alone, is it holding a charge? Does it tend to happen when you are on the internet or accessing a network? The start up repair is normal, since the laptop did not get a chance to shut down properly, so I wouldn't worry about that, although it isn't good for it, of course.

Hi,

I have a 3-year-old NEC desktop (PC-VL570CD) with XP Home Edition (SP2). About 3 months ago, it began to shut down in the midst of a scheduled weekly full virus scan. I contacted McAfee, and they recommended that I do a scan disk, disk cleanup, and defrag, which I did. But the problem remained.

About a month later, my PC started to instantly and totally shut down if I watched a video of more than a few minutes. Now it is even worse. Sometimes it shuts down when I am not even using the PC. And the frequency is increasing. Yesterday, it shut down 3 times in 1 hour. All I was doing was some simple browsing and writing with Word.

I don't know if there is any relationship. But at around the same time as the above problem began, I started having trouble using my CD/DVD drive. I usually can't eject a disk until after I have rebooted the PC a few times. In addition to pushing the eject button, I have tried clicking on the drive and choosing eject to no avail.

In addition, the PC sometimes stopped recognizing the drive when I tried to use it. I mean, it did not show up at all when I tried to find it via My Computer.

I have not tried to use it for over a month. The drive always shows up now. But it says UsbDrive rather than CD/DVD Drive.

One final symptom. When I clicked on the drive, the PC sometimes froze.

I of course contacted NEC about the drive. They said that they think it is a hardware problem and that it has to be sent in for repairs. I am hoping tha... Read more

I have a gateway desktop. it has 8 gb of ram, intel core 2 quad q8200 processor 2.33 ghz, nvidia gerforce gt120, and 640 gb of hardrive space. I'm runing Windows Vista 64 bit with sp3

I bought my pc recently and have been working absolutely fine until recently. It has been shutting off randomly. I tried starting my pc in safe mode and ran virus scans with spy sweeper, malwarebytes anti spyware (full version), and SUPERantispyware. I removed whatever I could but found no real threat. I shut it off yesterday for a couple of hours and when I turned it back on it lasted me the night. Just recently, it shutt off once again, and when I started it back on it shut off quicker than the last time, and when I tried once more even quicker. Im not sure if this is a motherboard problem, or if it's overheating. The vents have no dust on them and the fan seems to be fine, though I did not open up my PC to look. Do you guys have any suggestions?

The things I have checked is

1. delete browsing, cookies, temp files and history.
2. automatic restart is unchecked in my pc>system properties>startup & recovery.
3. I moved the tower away from walls to get good air flow to keep from overheating.

I have searched the threads and sure I have done other suggestions but cannot recall them all.

It would be plugged in with a "charged" battery then it would shut off after about an hour of use. There is no shutdown notice. It just shuts off. After rebooting it states the battery has no charge, and if the computer is still warm, it shuts off again. Does anyone know what's going on?

After waiting about 20/30 mins i can restart it without a problem & it appears fine & it'll stay running til a hour & will cut off again. I have had my self built PC a while and not too long ago its started crashing; not long after updating to Win 10. I have thoroughly tested the PC and I'm really struggling to find a solution, so need an outside opinion.

Specs:
CPU - Intel I7 4790K 4Ghz (liquid cooled)
Mobo - Asus Maximuss VII Hero (1150)
GPU - Nvidia GTX 780 Ti
Samsung SSD's
PSU - 850W EVGA supernova

The issue: Computer will shut off completely at any random moment, under stress or idle etc. There is no warning message, just full shut down. It can run for hours on end no issue hours then crash or crash within 30mins of booting up.

(Also noticed recently the PC will sometimes boot and not load any peripherals. So monitor, mouse, keyboard do not work and a reboot is required.)

What i've tried:

-Switching out RAM
-Re-seating all harware
-Monitor hardware temperatures (never gets too hot)
-Switching out GPU
-Various driver updates (GPU, BIOS etc.)
-Fresh Win 10 install
-Browse various forums with similar issues and try their solutions (plus malware scans)
-Check for minidump files (file is never written)

All I can think is left is a faulty PSU or Motherboard.

Thanks in advance for any help.

If you are saying that the system actually shuts down, it's most likely a hardware issue. My first guess would be the power supply, but it could also be ram, cpu, mobo or hd.

I have a HP Pavilion 6500 that has recently started shutting down for no reason. I have had it completely apart, cleaned and inspected every part. Everything looks good and when I put it back together it worked fine for about 6 hours then shut down again with no warning or error message. When I attempt to restart, it comes on for about 2 seconds and shuts off again. (On battery, battery w/adapter and adapter only) Even when it has sat overnight or for a couple of days and should be completely cool. Someone in another thread mentioned processor protection in the BIOS. How do I check that? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Ram can go bad, i would do a thorough test on the ram.... I use the ultimate Boot CD. It's free and it has some pretty good tests on the cd.

I have my Lenovo Y50-70 for a little more than a year. Six days ago I upgraded it to Windows 10 and I also installed the drivers and the newest version of the BIOS from the Lenovo website.  Then, in these past six days, the laptop shot off suddenly three times, without any warning, and by making a pop sound. I can then restart it and it works after that but this is very worrying.  When it shot off I was doing light stuff, browsing, have a couple of documents open. I also play games on it but nothing very heavy.  I looked it up and I see that others have had a similar problem but I don't find any solution. If possible, I would preffer not to send it back to Lenovo.  Does any of you know if a solution has been found to this problem? Thank you.  Paul

A:Lenovo Y50-70 shuts off without warning

Hi Paul, When the issue happened, will you need to press again the power button or computer will reboot itself? Because if it shutting down and you have to press the power button, most likely it is overheating. What I can suggest is to monitor your usage and download this application, HWMonitor.  How to check for thermal issues with HWMONITOR (Over heating) Idle ModeUtilization : 0 - 30%Temperature : 30C to 50C (Normal) - 51C to 60C (Over heating) Normal UsageUtilization : 20 - 40%Temperature : 50C to 60C (Normal) - 61C to 70C (Over heating) Heavy UsageUtilization : 50% aboveTemperature : 60C to 80C (Normal) - 81C and above If machine reaches 100C, unit will shutdown by itself to protect the CPU. Note: Desktops tend to be cooler than Laptops and AIOs. Ambient temperature may also affect minimum temperature of the machine. The below post is just a guide and is not a standard. See more here

Cooling pads work great, I have one on mine.
But you still need to blow compressed air through the computer occasionally as the pad tends to blow dust into the PC.

Hello,

I have a problem with an Acer Aspire 1604LC, build date July 2003. With battery on full power and power cord inserted, he just shuts down with no warning when working a few hours.

The fan always turns at average speeds when this happens and it it not when I am doing things that can really overheat him (I do things that ask a lot of resources, but everything is ok then...).

Any suggestions of what might be the cause?

Thanks!

Have you installed any new hardware or software recently that could cause this? What are some of your system specs? Any information that you think might be helpful please post back.

hi
i have a sony vaio vgn nw29gf laptop it is 2.5 years old

the problem is that for the last 6 months it is shutting off without any warning that battery is low it doesnt give the bsod so dont go there it just shut down and when i restart i ahve to plug it in and then win7 says that windows was not shut down properly. now here is the twist when it starts on battery power it shows that battery is still 60 or 70% available so i know that it got shut down due to weak battery or any other problem

the battery has gone very weak i have used it very rough i have played games on it for hours watched movies etc so i know that the battery is weak now but still it should give me warning before closing.

when the battery is full charged and i unplug it and use it. it only works for 5 mins maximum and then goes off and i ahve to plug it in

anyone knows any solution other than buying a new battery plz tell me

i know that i need a new battery but still the backup time for the battery should be atleast 30 mins not 5 mins however rough i have used it

A:Laptop shuts down without warning

your battery has had it. A laptop battery should last hours, not minutes. I get 8 hours from a 4 year old macbook still

The problem is poor battery conditioning. All batteries have a limited charge cycle. normally around 1000 charges. Leaving the battery plugged in when its fully charged is the worst thing you can do to keep a battery at its peak.

Basically when a battery is fully charged the laptop will stop charging it, naturally over time batteries slowly discharge, when the battery discharges by around 1% the laptop will start charging it again, this is 1 charge cycle.. add them up and youll soon knacker the battery.

Using the battery is not abusing it, so you cant be "hard" on it. A lithium ion battery can discharge at an ampage rate thousands of times more powerful than a laptop will ever pull.

Now to condition your new battery, once its fully charged, unplug it, and use it till its almost flat, and then recharge it again. Dont leave it plugged in for extended periods of times and never leave it plugged in over night when its not on.

Dont mean to preach :P im just a bit of a battery nerd after many many many years of Rc car racing lol.. which beleive it or not is one of the pinical sports in battery technology lol

I have XP SP2 and one of my desktop PC's just keeps shuting down with out warning and i cant figure out what it is!..

If i boot my computer and let it sit there and do nothing it wont shut down.
but if i open up anything, program, or even just like my documents, it works for a bit then completely randomly shuts down.

It is quite annoying, i know it isnt from over heating becuase i checked the computer temp after it shut down and it was only like 86 F.

it may be from bad RAM but i took out my ram and dusted it off and even put it in diffrent slots on the motherboard...

it could still be a virus but i have antivirus software (AVG) and it found nothing...

i turned the off the option to shutdown on system error and i just cant figure out what it is.

any help would be of thanks.

Hi I have been having trouble with my computer shutting down unexpectedly. I have tried every avenue I know other than taking it in to a shop. Please help me out if you can thanks! Here is my system information:

Windows XP Professional version 2002 service pack 2
Mobile AMD Athlon 64 3400+ processor
574 MHz, 1.00 GB ram

My computer will shutdown or restart suddenly. Sometimes you will see windows going through the steps and othertimes it will shut down with no warning. It is also lagging when using the internet especially. Ive run up to date virus checks with AVG, Ad-Aware and Anti-Malware and found some nasty malware but this didnt solve my problem. I have analysed my CPU's core temperature using Speed Fan and it seems to be running fine at an average of just below 50c but will jump as high as 70c with more procceses running. It comes down again quickly though so I dont think its a temp issue. Are there ways to test my power supply?

Please let me know if there is more information I should unclude or if you have any questions. Here is a HJT log if needed:

Wndows XP machine shuts down without warning. No error messages, no sounds, black screen. Windows then starts up normal again when I push the on button. The time it takes that it shuts down is always different. This machine is build by me about a little over a year ago. It has a western digital Caviar hard drive 250 GB 7200 rpm SATA, AMD Athlon 64 Venice 2.0GHZ processor, 512 MB RAM.
Just upgraded to Norton Internet Security 2008. Also when doing a full system scan computer will shutdown during the scan. But also shuts down while working on the computer with any software, but like I said it is very randomly.
Any ideas what the problem is? Checked harddrive for bad sectors and did a disk scan on all the partitions. Hard drive partitioned in C, D, and E drive. Desk top also shows a "Remove Safely Hardware" icon all the time and when clicked on it it shows the harddrive. This I cannot figure out either. Has this something to do with it? I did not check the BIOS settings yet, should I?
Thanks for reading and I hope someone can help me out.

My PC shuts down all of a sudden all the time(Up to like 5 times now). There's no warning, and no blue screen. It just shuts down and then starts back up again instantly.

Also, i have gotten 2 Blue Screen errors, and 1 incident where the lsass.exe process terminated suddenly and started the "shutdown -s -t 60 -c"Dont remember the message"" command at the login screen. All within 2 hours.
And right now my computer just lost all sound, which means its probbably about to shut down again.

I restored my computer 2 days ago, and havent installed much since then. It was suggested that one of my 3 RAM sticks had gone bad. But when i opened my PC, i couldnt figure out how to take the RAM sticks out.

Why is it doing this?

When the pc shut down i can`t turn it on right away (nothing happens), so i have to unplug the power cord for about 10 secs to turn it back

i thought the problem was processor overheated, so i bought termal paste, now temps are good, arround 39C IDLE and 55 under heavy load.

so, i don`t know why my pc keep shutting down suddenly.

(i have pc specs in my sing, if you do need any other info just let me know)

i really appreciate your help, i`ll be waiting your answer, thank you.

Hi there everybody. Lately I've built up my own computer. I am kind of expert so there shouldn't be any nab problem like mounting something wrong or placing wrong cables in wrong places but I have this problem. My pc runs very smoothly and powerful but after a period of gaming (like 1 hour of gtaV) my pc suddenly shuts down. It gives me no warning at all. I checked the temps and they all seems to be normal when the power off happens, so I think it couldn't be an over heating problem. This happens only when I "make things hard" let's say. The first days that this happened the AI software told me there was low voltage but now that doesn't happen anymore. But that's strange assuming I have a KCAS 600w.

My specs:
Mother: ASUS M5A99FX PRO R2.0
cpu: AMD FX 8320E 3.2->5GHz 8 core
GPU: AMD SAPPHIRE Dual-X R9 270X
Ram: 4GbKingstone+8GbKingstone
PSU: KCAS 600w
Cooling: Freezer 7 Pro rev 2

Help please, that's my struggle since 7 months

A:PC suddenly shuts down

I kept it monitored until the shutdown and on the AI software I saw that there was low voltage on the 2v and the 12 one.
How is it possible? I have 600 w and it should be enough

I have HP 15-r029wm Notebook PC (ENERGY STAR), model G9D74UA. Originally Windows 8.1, now Win10 Home.  It shuts down without warning, even at 50% battery!  Sometimes it says it isn't charging.  An HP batteryy check says that my battery is weak but I haven,t been unable to find a replacement battery mentioned at the HP website. Any help greatly appreciated!

A:HP 15 Notebook shuts down without warning on battery

Hi: Check the part number on your battery and compare it with the two listed in chapter 3 of the service manual for your notebook. http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04409502 It is probably the 3 cell battery listed in chapter 3 on page 19. HP has that part # in stock --$62.10 https://parts.hp.com/hpparts/Search_Results.aspx?mscssid=FAC0BA9E984748D6B98F3ABC366027D9&SearchIn=P... Why that happens is normally one of the cells is shot, so the notebook is running fine and all of a sudden it shuts down when power is required from the bad cell. You can also do a query by the part number and see if you can get the same battery for less elsewhere but make sure it is a genuine HP battery, or be willing to accept what you pay for if it isn't.

My laptop is a Sony Vaio this is the model ->VPCF116FX.
Lately i've been gaming heavily on it, and its my first time leaving it on over night. Now the first thing you guys might think is that its an overheating problem, I can assure you its not as I tested it while monitoring my core's temperatures. 2 different tests, the one without a coolant the laptop peaked at a blistering 95c, like I said it shuts down randomly I can leave it on overnight without a coolant and then when I play for like 1 hour it can shut off. The fastest it shut off before was 3 minutes right after running the game I play. (It only shuts down while playing a game known as Aika) I doubt its also the games problem as how can a game shut off a laptop/pc. Anyways, the test with the coolant, the temperature is at a stable 65-68c, and it still randomly shuts off it could shutoff within 5 minutes, or 10 hours. (of playing a game, never witnessed it shutdown without playing yet)

A:Laptop shuts down without warning on battery

You need to run a battery status test which you can do by tapping F2 as you power up to get into diagnostic mode. If you are out of warranty and the laptop is over 2 years old the first thing we think of with battery problems is that the battery is old and needs replacing.
