L440: No On Screen Display for FN keys

Q: L440: No On Screen Display for FN keys

My laptop really works fine - there's just one point annoying me: For a few days now, I don't have any on screen display anymore for all FN keys: no volume, brightness display - no problem. No Caps display - ehm. No selection for display changing or wifi/bluetooth - I don't have an idea to do it otherwise. No bluetooth entry in the system panel neither. WLAN works fine, but Bluetooth is off. I want my black on screen alerts back! I tried with updating the power management - nothing changed. I tried to reinstall the power management driver - nothing. What can I do?

Preferred Solution: L440: No On Screen Display for FN keys

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

One hint says you could activate the on screen display in the display settings. What, please, is the Display Settings dialogue called like in German Win7? I can't find it.

Hello everyone, I replaced my screen on my L440, because it would not show any sign of being alive anymore (external monitor workds fine). I used this "opportunity" to upgrade it to full hd, also replaced the connecting cable.Nonetheless, my screen is still always dark - in Windows, as also for the bios or post screen (external works fine here).Depending in which panel I install, the old low res or ne full hd, the resolution on the external  monitor responses to that (clone mode). Thus I assume, the both cabels are fine, both panel are fine, the system recognizes them. But why is it still blank. Also tried to trigger closing the lid with a magnet (next to the webcam), only shutsdown then.Any ideas?!

I recently bought a new PORTEGE Z30T-A PT24CE-01600EN5

It was Win7 pre installed and I upgraded to:
OS Version Microsoft Windows 8.1 Pro 6.3.9600 with their CDs.

The problem is the FN keys do not display on screen.
When I first got my laptop under Win7 I would press the FN key and options would display on my screen, that was great. But after a day it doesnt display anything on the screen.

How can I fix this problem?

At first I must say that described issue is not a problem.
Under Win8.1 Toshiba has offered FN keys usage in two modes:
-Special function mode
-Standard F1-F12 mode.

If you use Win8.1 open please Desktop Assist > Tools & Utilities > System Settings > Keyboard.

There you can change function keys mode.

Please test it how it works.

Hello- This is the first time I've needed to post here - I wouldn't say I'm an advanced user, but I have a pretty good idea what I'm doing. So please bear with me. My specific problem is that, seemingly following one of the attached (screenshot) windows updates, I can no longer use the Fn+F keys properly. Some of them do work (I can adjust brightness, hibernate), but I cannot for instance open WiFi controls (Access Connections) with Fn+F5, Communications Utility with Fn+F6, or connect to a projector with Fn+F7. Also, the accompanying screen overlay isn't right. The manual volume adjust button doesn't show the volume change on screen (same for mute button); neither does Fn+F8/F9 for brightness; ditto for CAPS-LOCK key, so I don't know whether caps lock is on or not! But these buttons/key-combinations do at least work. I have spent a long time trying to fix this following for example treads like below: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-11e-Windows-E-and-Edge/E530-special-keys-FN-F4-FN-F5-etc-are-n... https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-T400-T500-and-newer-T/T530-Fn-keys-and-quot-On-Screen-Display-... Updating HotKeys feature integration manually did not help. I have a Dell Precision 5510 laptop issued by my work. They have installed some custom software and  and I seem to have lost the OSD showing the little bars indicating adjustments to Volume and Brightness when you use the Fn keys to adjust them. A search of previous threads indicated this function was previously managed by a program called Dell Quickset or Dell ControlPoint System Manager, but these were from posts several years old and neither of those programs seems to be applicable to my current laptop. Any idea what program or drivers need to be installed to restore this functionality?

Dear All
I request all the professionals over here to just let me know the problem and the solution for it.
Yesterday all of a sudden while browsing my laptop (Dell studio 1557 - win 10 - 64 bit - 4 GB Ram - 1 TB HDD - 512 Mb graphics) has stopped responding all of a sudden making a huge buzzing sound, with no option left I have performed force shutdown by pressing the POWER button for a long time.
Later I have tried to start but there is no Display, I can fell that the PC powered up as the cooling fan is rotating and they are no beeps sound immediately after power-on but after about 2-3 min time when ever a key is pressed on the keyboard i can hear a Beep sound (one beep for each key only while pressing) . This is the only thing i can feel and i am unable to know what is the problem.
- I have tried removing the RAM cleaning and putting it back but it didn't help me.
Hoping a solution for the problem kindly help me out.

Hello, I have a problem with setting a custom splashscreen when booting my Thinkpad L440 in UEFI mode. The BIOS I am using is version 1.86 and model L440 obtainable from here http://support.lenovo.com/no/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-l-series-laptops/thinkpad-l44... as per the requirements I have made the images 16 colours palette (4bpp), both images adhere to the standards logo1 legacy boot (640X480) and logo2 UEFI boot (1366X768) where I used .gif format. The problem is that only the legacy boot screen splash actually gets used, but the UEFI boot splash image (logo2) does not appear at all. Everything that happens is that you get a completely black boot screen with only the (press enter to interrupt boot... ) option. I have tried many different pictures, and different formats but arrived to the conclusion that it is broken.  Trying to boot Windows with broken custom splash screen, I get a BSOD with the error IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL  and can't boot into Windows 8.1. This makes me believe that something is not working properly, and not only does setting a custom splash screen on UEFI boot not actually show my bootscreen, it could have damaged some UEFI boot drivers so that Windows is unable to start properly. Maybe the tool is outdated and did not save the splash screen correctly? Upon re-flashing the BIOS using winuptp.exe it asked me if I wanted to keep my custom splash screen, and when I hit yes it simply crashed. &nb... Hi all, I have a L440 Thinkpad. About 3 years back I pulled out the HDD, put in a SSD. Replaced the optical drive with a HDD caddy. The combination worked really great so far. Recently I replaced my aging SSD with a new one. Basically I cloned the old SSD to a new one. Now after the reboot, the boot screen shows the message, "configuration changed - Restart the system". It is connected to the HDD caddy. If I remove the caddy, the system boots up fine. But whenever I insert the caddy, the system does not boot anymore. I can't even get to the boot menu. It get's stuck in a boot loop. So I am trying to understand why this is happening here. Other than a new SSD, the caddy is same all the way. It worked before, so no apparent reason for it to stop working. Unless the BIOS firmware is manually checking for allowed FRU after detecting hardware change. Has anyone faced this problem? Any help or pointers regarding this is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I have Dell Inspiron 5547 laptop (Touch Screen, 15 inches, 16 GB RAM and i7 4th Gen processor, Out of Warranty). Some days back, suddenly the display went dim and anything is hardly visible. After some initial investigation, the display chip (may be VGA or LED display chip) on the motherboard appears to be burnt out (may be due to voltage surge). Even the numbers printed on the chip is not readable because of which it is difficult for the local repairing shops to repair this problem.
I think Dell India Service Center doesn't deal with chip level repair and hence replacing motherboard is the only way they can fix this. This will be very costly (considering that the laptop is not under warranty so will have to pay for warranty extension, motherboard replacement and repair service) and time consuming.
Hence, to avoid all this I have come here to seek some assistance.
If there are anyone using the same laptop (Inspiron 5000 series 5547 Touch Screen Display with i7 4th Gen Processor and 16 GB RAM) then could you please take a clear picture of your laptop's motherboard or if you recognize the display chip then only that should be sufficient. In this case, I can read the chip related number from the image and try to repair it.
What are the charges for buying a warranty for the laptop, motherboard of my laptop and repairing charge?

Request your response and help.

Rohit Kumar

A:Display Issue - Dim Display for Dell Inspiron 5000 (Model 5547) - Touch Screen Display with i7 4th Gen Processor and 16 GB RAM

You'll have to call Dell about the possibility of a warranty extension;  in the US, it's sometimes possible but will likely run over $300 -- or about what a board replacement would cost.
If you're getting video, the GPU is OK -- and it's more likely the power circuit to the backlight that's bad.  It'll likely cost as much to repair as to replace the board -- though you'll still be putting $300-400 into an out of warranty system, so replacing the system may be a better idea (if you do this, consider buying a 3-year warranty with the next system).

I have a Compaq 1680 laptop, The letter O and number 9 keys will not display on my screen. I press it and nothing happens. All other keys are fine. I realize that the #9 key is right above the letter O key. Help, what can I do to fix this problem. Otherwise the laptop works fine.

A:laptop keys don't display

This appears to be a fairly common problem with Compaqs. I have fixed several by removing the keyboard (the screws are marked underneath with a "K"). Be careful with the ribbon cables from the screen. Remove and reseat these ribbon cables, nad the keyboard. Slacken ALL the case screws underneath and re-tighten evenly, firmly, but no too tight. You should find the problem solved.

Please bare with me, I'm new to this but:

I have a Dell XPS 15 running 7 x64 (more details please see my page) and I am trying to dim my display through the OS. When I press the Fn keys to change the display brightness, the notification shows on screen that it is changing the brightness with a nice little slider and all, but nothing moves and the brightness won't change. I've tried pressing repeatedly, holding down, no change. So naturally, the next step is to change the display brightness settings in power options. Only problem is, IT'S NOT THERE! I have no option relating to display brightness. I've tried re-installing display driver with no help. I don't know if it is a problem with Dell's display not supporting the function or with Windows 7 not offering.

Thanks in advance for any help, please ask if any more info is needed.

Where did you find the drivers?

On the Toshiba European driver page in Archive area you could find the drivers for Sat Pro M30

Hi there,

i have an Asus X750JB notebook with Windows 8.1. I had a problem with sound while connecting my tv via HDMI cable, but i managed to solve it (found solution on this board). But after updating intel hd graphics driver and installing newest realtek audio driver i have a new problem
In asus i have a function key FN+F7 - it turns off notebook's display. Before solving sound problem, while connected to the tv, using this fn~key would turn off notebook's display, but on tv i would still be able to see "desktop". But now turning display off would also affect the tv. Is there a simple way to solve it? I just spent 3 hours changing drivers and I had enough :/

My yoga-730 15 had a keyboard problem. I send it to Lenovo repair center to repair. Now it is back, but the ASDJKL keys(same keys before repair) stopped to work again just in one day... I suspect that Lenovo has not repaired it at all. I just wasted 2 weeks for waiting and I got a dirty unrepaired laptop back :CCCC
And there are many issues on this laptop, too. For example, when I turn around the display, sometimes the laptop just suddenly shut down. and the battery life really sucks, only can handle around 2h or 2h30min for web browsing on either of chrome and Microsoft edge. the fan is really loud. When I web browsing, doing nothing else, the fan noise will make the people around me notice me.

I'd hazard a guess that it worked fine on the bench, so you got it back. Intermittant problems have their own Murphy's Law: They often won't present when in front of a technician.
As for the battery life, if the fan's running all the time and your battery life is low, something is likely consuming resources. Could be a stuck installation or even routine cloud synching and virus scanning. You can use Task Manager to figure out what's tasking the CPU and draining your battery.

You have to install Lenovo Utility to get this to work. Also after manual reinstallation you should install various drivers for components in your laptop from Lenovo website to get the best of your laptop. If you don't want to do that, the better soution than reinstallation is to restore factory image using OneKey Recovery. This will automatically reinstall Windows with all drivers built in as well as various Lenovo applications like Lenovo Utility.

I started having issues yesterday, the day after I installed teamviewer a program that is on my iPad also to remotely control the laptop. At first the screen started freezing when I was in the middle of a Java game. So I restarted the laptop only to have it freeze at the main screen (after login).

The screen would freeze the display would change to a very low resolution (I think). So I kept restarting it only to repeat. Until eventually once past the windows logo the screen would turn black and blank. Sometimes the display would turn on black and blank and other times it would do that after the logo.

A few times I managed to get it to go into safe mode and I restored to a few days ago but it made no difference, I also tried many other things like changing some settings but nothing worked.

So after like 2 or 3 hours I Rolled back and disabled "nvidia quadro nvs 135m" (since I read it might be causing the issue and I should uninstall it which I couldn't), once I disabled it I restarted the computer and made it to the main screen without issues, and I could even load my game. I enabled it again And restarted the computer only to have the same issues so I disabled it again after finally getting into safe mode.

I don't know if it works fine now, I left it on at most for 5-10 minutes without any issues and I never actually logged into the game to see if it works.

Good morning,
I recently assembled a new computer and when booting I get no image display, no beeps, no bios display; screen just says no signal. CPU heat sink and other fans work. These are the specifications of my computer:

Asus Prime B350M-A
AMD ryzen 7 1700 3.8GHz (has no integrated graphic card)
Corsair vengeance DDR4 PC4-19200 16Gb (2x8) 2400 MHz
SSD 240 gb.
HDD 1tb.
PSU 750W
GPU Gigabyte GTX 960 winforce 4gb.
And here is a list of the things that I have already tried:

Tried GPU on a diferent computer and it worked fine.
Tried removing memory sticks one at a time and tried them individually in each slot of the MOBO. Unfortunately my other computer supports DDR3 memory sticks so I can ensure if they work properly, however they are new so i'm quite confident they are fine.
Tried with my other computers PSU which is also 750W and runs my other computer and made no difference.
Removed CPU from slot to check pins and they are mint.
Inspectioned MOBO carefully and appears completely intact.
Monitor and cables are ok since my other computer displays fine.
Tried HDMI, DVI and VGA cables.
I hope somebody can help me. Thanks in advance.

Have a look at the Hardware Maintenance Manual to get an idea how to open things.Furthermore you might consider installing an m2 ssd .

Hi guys, how are you? Do you think that this SSD works in an L440 and I can use it with move the OS. http://www.amazon.com/Transcend-256GB-MTS400-Solid-TS256GMTS400/dp/B00KLTPUG4 Where I live I haven't got much options to buy.

Short answer is yes. My L440 has a Transcend TS256GMTS400 I installed in the M.2 slot, and the software that is downloadable for it allows you to copy the O/S drive to the SSD and boot from it. My L440 goes from power on to logon in literally a few seconds and I still have the 512GB HDD available for things that don't need the blinding speed of the SSD.

Hi, There seems to be some problem detected for my original 16GB M.2 SSD, so I want to replace it with a new one. I bought the following one, which should be compatible https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KBZH72I/ref=twister_B00KBZH7E6?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 My question is, after I get it, should I just remove the original one and install the new one? Is there any other thing I should to complete the replacement? The OS is on my HDD, but I don't plan to move it to the new SSD. In this case, do I just need to remove the old one and install the new one? The reason why I ask is that the manual says: "Ensure that you partition the M.2 solid-state drive after installing it on the computer you are servicing. Otherwise, the M.2 solid-state drive will not function correctly." Thanks a lot!

About 2 mo ago I got a brand new (warehouse fugitive) L440.  It had Win7 Pro 64bit.  the first thing I did after starting it was to let it upgrade to Win 10.  I'm a big fan and really like it, the 440, not so much.  I like the speed and quality of the build, It does everything I want and does it exceptionally well, I just can't stand the keyboard.  After reinstalling Win 10 in my T400 everything is finally working as it should and It has a far superior keyboard.  I want to reset it to give to my brother.  When I go to reset it I only get two options, and I don't really want to lose all the factory installed apps.  I'm alson a little concerned that Windows Explorer is showing Windows 7_OS (C.  It has all the app files.  It's not shown as a reset option in Settings, tho.   What's the best way to go here.  I still hae just shy of 4 year s of warrantee on it and don't want to mess that up.

Hello finally I got my L440 and made RAM upgrade to 16GB and I also want it to have an SSD. After reading all the manuals and forum messages I think that it have  a sutiable port for an mSATA SDD which will solve my problem in a great way without replacing anything.
My question is, my machine didn't come with an mSATA or WWAN option. While making the RAM upgrade I checked the ports and there is only one seems to be suitable for mSATA but since area is too small I couldn't be sure if it is the one. Can you please check the attachment and tell me if any mSATA will fit in that port? Or maybe it is not for mSATA and I should go with the traditional SSD solutions by replacing the disc?

A:msata SSD for L440?

According to the Hardware Maintenance Manual, page 70 that slot is for a WWAN card or M.2 SSD.  An mSATA SSD will not fit.
From what I read here in the boards, finding a high capacity SSD in the right physical size is  a problem.  There are multiple sizes - IIRC the 42mm version is used in Lenovo laptops.

Hello, My Thinkpad L440 has a problem of heat. When I use my CPU at 100%, it heats up to over 100 ° C and its frequency drops. So I can't fully use my CPU. I checked: the air vents are clean. Am I the only one with this problem ? Is there any solution ? Thank you in advance.

I have an L440 (20AS) that has an M.2 expansion slot. My laptop is having the stock 500GB HDD as the only storage installed as of now. I am thinking of installing an M.2 SSD and using that as the primary boot disk, while keeping my current HDD as it is for pure storage purpose. I have a few questions:1. Is it possible to have such configuration without any hiccups?2. If yes, which would be the best M.2 disk to buy? Any suggestions?3. Is there any way to transfer my current system from existing HDD without reinstalling Windows (I am on Windows 10) on the M.2 SSD? My current C: drive is 65GB (25GB free). All data except installed softwares are in D: drive which is 400GB. So if everything is OK, I will try to buy an M.2 SSD around 128GB and will have to transfer my current C: to that, if that's possible.
