Preferred Solution: Stop Windows 10 Home Update at the firewall?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I removed it since I don't need it after a reinstall but I believe the preferences did have the option to not check for new versions

I purchased a new notebook with Windows 7 in October. During the first weeks I uninstalled McAfee and replaced the harddrive. Since November Windows Update fails with error messages and defender does not start anymore. I made several virus scans (complete) with multiple antivirus programs but nothing showed up.Since it took my days to install various software, I do not want to re-install W7. I also have no good backup that I could restore. I am really surprised that there is not even a single entry regarding the error code in the Microsoft Knowledge base or elsewhere.I really would appreciate help.

What do you think of Windows own firewall? Does it also stop outbound connections?

What is it like compared to Zone Alarm? Is ZA in itself any good?

Also, is there a tool similar to ZA's internet lock where you can temporarily enable / disable internet access?

A:Windows Firewall or ZoneAlarm Free and stop internet access?

Personally speaking I have never bothered with software firewalls. I've always used the Windows one and the hardware firewall included in your router.

Okay so I've had this problem for about a year, every once in awhile I try to solve it but never can.

I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium.

Here are all the problems I know about.

When I try to open it from the Services menu it says "Windows could not start the Windows Firewall service on Local Computer. Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start."

: So, the problem here is that everytime I open game maker HTML5, game maker studio, game maker 8.1 and the installation of the program from getpaint.net, and some other programs that I uninstalled awhile ago. I get some form of "has stopped working" error. Generally it's due to an updater has stopped working.

When I run a game with Game maker studio I get this error. "GMAssetCompiler has stopped working."

When I open 3ds max 2012 I get this "3ds Max has detected that the required .NET framework version is not properly installed." However, I do not get that error from 3ds max 2013 and it runs fine. I have tried to reinstall .NET framework 10-15 times.

The problem is with a Tiny Tornado PC attached by wire to my home network (Belkin wired/wireless G router). It was fine on Sunday but on Monday I could not connect to the network, though other PCs were fine. The Local Area Connection icon indicated that "the network did not assign a network address to the computer". The Advanced tab in Network Connections indicated that there might be a WMI problem but no restore point was usable.
Investigating WMI brought up "Error 1075: The dependency service does not exist or...".

I have tried a variety of things, including swapping ports on the router and installing an ethernet card in the PC. ZoneAlarm SS recognizes that there is a network on the other end of the cable.

This problem extends to dial-up services - I am able to log in but not to send or receive mail.

I have just looked at the System table in Event Viewer, where I found a DHCP event, id 1006: Your computer was unable to automatically configure the IP parameters for the network card with netword address ...... The following error occurred during configuration: The support for the specified socket type does not exist in ths address family.

What should I do next?

I am running Win7 Pro 64bit (My Grandson's PC). The problem is that when he opens Chrome he can get Google & Gmail but gets an error when he tries to go anywhere else. The error tells me that I can't connect to the proxy server. I have tried changing the LAN settings but that doesn't work. It was suggested I check Windows Defender & Windows Firewall. Defender is out of date & will not turn on. Firewall says connected to Public but Home Network is not connected. I can't seem to find a way to connect it. He uses Windows security Essentials.

I hope someone can help me with this. He is 14 & is very discouraged & impatient because I can usually fix his problems but I am lost on this.

Many Thanks,

What did you change them to? Usually, unless an ISP otherwise specifies, the first item should be checked about "Automatically detect......" and nothing else. I've found if the Proxy section has checkmarks, and the ISP doesn't require them, that infections can cause that and can prevent opening Web sites.

I have read the stuff about the firewall and there are still a couple of things I can't get right. FIRST--I have another xp home editon computer hooked to this one with a crossover cable for my home network. I have had this network for along time. Since I goofed and had automatic updates on it loaded SP2 on this computer (the host). When I have the firewall on it blocks my network, if I turn it off I can get through. I have read the stuff about adding things and if you can;'t find it to browse and then add it to the exception list. Well I browsed and found the network mshome and my second computer but for the life of me I can't get it added to the exception list. I have clicked and double clicked and added and I can't get it on the list. Also when you read about the firewall it says there should be a security box pop up when sometning tries to connect to the host computer or through the host to the internet. I wanted it to come up when I tried to connect with the other computer through this one then I could just say not to block it, but the security box never comes up, I have never seen it. It should come up and have three buttons saying blocked unblock and something else, it has never came up on my computer, can someone help me to get my network working with the firewall on cause I hate to run it without a firewall for security reasons, I also have zonealarm but I turn it off cause it won't let the network work with it on either, please help.

Hello
I have a Dell Inspiron 9200 laptop running Win XP SP 3.
On start-up and arriving at the desktop my Firewall is temporarily turned off for a couple of minutes and then it comes back on. During this process when I open Win Security Console and attempt to go into the Firewall Settings, the computer says:
"Due to an unidentifed problem, Windows cannot display Windows Firewall settings."
I am running COMODO Antivirus and also use SUPERAntiSpyware. I've tried to rule out these as the reason by changing settings (including in msconfig) to not auto start these programs but that doesn't take the problem away.
Also, I checked the the Event manager and I found this listed as the first event after a clean boot:
Event Type: Information
Event Source: cmdAgent
Event Category: None
Event ID: 0
Date: 7/26/2013
Time: 6:06:39 AM
User: N/A
Computer: DELL-9200
Description:
The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( cmdAgent ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: Service started/resumed.
I did try to use the DOS command above to retrieve more information but it didn't recognize the line command although the syntax I used I am pretty sure was correct (?)
Any help is appreciated.

Whenever I restart the system, I get a message indicating that there is no firewall up. When I go to the security page and click on reccommended the firewall turns on and stays on until the next restart.
Start/RUN/Services.MSC shows that Firewall is set to automatic.

How can I make make the Firewall ON permanent?

I found others who had a similar problem with no appropriate solutions presented. Since most of those threads were expired, I was hoping that there might be someone with insight to this issue.

I believe that there may be a connection with a trojan posing as an antivirus setting the policy to Task manager OFF which I have successfull turned back on.

The government needs to take these cyber terrorists more seriously, they create such havoc.

Any insight would be appreciated.

Hello and welcome to TSG.

You're quite right to suspect malware as the prime suspect in turning off the Windows Firewall - the only other possibility is another Firewall trying to take priority. If that doesn't apply to your system, you definitely have something nasty in there. Go to http://www.malwarebytes.com and download MalwareBytes. Install, update and click on Quick Scan then let it fix anything it finds. Restart the computer and open MBAM again, this time running a full scan. Fix anything and restart again.

Finally, go back into MBAM and click the Logs tab. Please copy and paste both logs... Read more

It's not easily doable - MSE actually does the downloads and installs itself, and the WU entries are a secondary tool.

Launch Notepad (not wordpad), and copy and paste the contents of the code box below into a new text file.
Save it as file name: "fixme.reg" (not including the quotes). Save as file type: All files (*.*) and save it on your Desktop.

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

I just got sygate, the free one cause I had sp2 and that firewall would not let my client through, even micosoft was on the phone several times and could not get it to work they finally said it must be a that sp2 got corrupted on the download, anyway, I got sygate, I think I followed all the directions in the help part, I was reading on a thread about pinging (from the client) did that and it worked, then it said to ping and that worked, then it said to ping www.sygate.com and that works, but ...st have both computers running through a hub.

You're probably in the wrong forum. A mod should be around to move it to networking for you. Oh, and you probably don't want to post your IP. It won't help anybody solve this and (not that there are any here) hackers can use that sort of thing.

I am using windows 7 64-bit. My computer is about 3-4 years old. Hey! A friend of mine accidentally installed the Zanga toolbar (it came bundled secretly with some software he downloaded). He got a pop-up stating that a virus had been detected, and then he ran a Norton scan. It detected one adware, and then he tried to remove it. However, it would not remove. He tried to look in the Quarantine box. The system would not load the box, and then it froze up. He proceeded to turn off the computer via the shutdown button. He booted up the computer again and he got the Windows Inconvenience screen, asking if he would like to load Windows in Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, or Normal Mode. Regardless of what he selects, he gets a blue error message. This is the noticeable line:

Hello,

I have in my house a small network consisting of two computers, a Desktop and a Laptop. The desktop is connected directly to a Cable modem. I also have a Wireless-G access point connected to the modem, and through this i can connect my laptop to the Internet.

I have both computers setup in a workgroup, sharing files between them.

Both computers are running Windows XP Home with service pack 2. As far as i can see the Firewall configurations are the same in both computers. I have enabled the UPnP framework and it worked fine for a while. However when i turned off both computers for the first time after setting up the network, and turned them back on, the Firewall on the desktop began blocking the laptop, so it couldnt recognize it as part of the workgroup, thus the network stopped working.

From the desktop i can access the laptop without any problems. However, from the laptop i cant access the desktop. I get a message saying:

"An error occurred while reconnecting to W: to (mapped drive from desktop name) Microsoft Windows Network: The local device name is already in use. This connection has not been restored"
If I turn off the firewall the network connections work perfectly, however i can't seem to get it to work with the firewall and i really don't like the idea of having the firewall turned off.

I really don't know what to try next, so I would appreciate it very much if someone could help me out with this.

Thank you

I hate to suggest the obvious, but why not invest in a $30 wireless router? It'll solve this problem and a whole lot more.

I'm running XP Pro, with Kerio Personal Firewall. I have a rule blocking all traffic on ports 135, 139, 445, and 593, as per my AV's recommendation (for RPC exploit). Trouble is, now when Windows tries to scan for updates on update site, the IE window becomes non-responsive, then crashes. If I disable Kerio, I scan successfully. Am I blocking Update when I block these ports? I suppose I could have denied Update access at some point, but I don't see in the settings where I've done that.

Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated! Thanks!

Long story short I was cleaning junk off my laptop which has Windows XP Home Edition on it. I use to have some viruses, etc on it but I cleaned all that off. I was still cleaning junk off like stuff I was never going to use or need again. So I ran Sfc /scannow with my Windows XP Home Edition CD in the drive to replace any system files that had any problems. After that I ran the Repair the Windows XP Installation from the WIndows XP Home Edition CD but after I did that I would get a black screen after the Windows loading screen. I don't believe Safe Mode was working either so I went back to try the same thing now I get STOP: 0x000007B after the Windows loading screen. Note: I had Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 3 installed and Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 on the CD. I wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed lol. Now the CD does say it has drivers on it I haven't tried doing anything with that. I ran chkdsk /r and fixboot on the Recovery Console but that didn't fix it. Next I tried to rebuild boot.ini on the Recovery Console bootcfg /rebuild and that didn't fix it. Also I found the boot.ini.backup so I copied it and renamed it to boot.ini after putting it in the C:\ folder. I did see some other .backup but I don't know if those have anything to do with it not booting up to Windows normally. Next I booted up to the Kaspersky Rescue Disk and ran a scan after updating the definitions. The scan results came up clean. The good news is I can still see the stuff I have on ... Read more

Your repair using the windows xp sp2 most likely copied old driver files to the computer...easy way out is backup your files and reinstall...hard way out is slipstream sp3 into your xp disc and try a repair install again... I would not advise this because of all the fixes you have already done.

Friend knows I work on computer so they asked me to look at it. The computer keeps rebooting itself.
I no you can turn off the Automatic restart but can't get to it to turn it off,
I no you can go to start>run and type shutdown -a to get it to stop the auto startup but can't get there either.

She has a set of recovery disks but doesn't want to do a recovery she doesn't want to lose all her data and pics etc.

Can't get to safe mode or safe mode with a command prompt to try a system restore
It starts up by showing the hp screen you can get to the BIOS or F10 for system recovery but system recovery just show a solid blue screen and stays like that. Is there anything else I can do to get it to stop rebooting to get a look at the BSOD ? I tried last known good configuration and anything I try right after the hp screen it reboots. The HP screen comes up and show you can get the BIOS by F1 or recovery by F10 it just sits there a little bit then you can hear the harddrive like it wants to boot up but they just click and reboots and starts it all over again. Is there another way to stop the reboot that I havent tried?

Windows XP used to give you the option to shut down your PC without installing Windows updates or to choose to shut it down and install updates, but this feature seems to be missing in Windows 7.

One of my PC's runs Windows 7 Professional and it also comes with the Group policy Editor (gpdeit.msc) that can be used to tweak the registry so that you get the option to shut down with/without installing updates. It is fairly straightforward to do.

However another of my PC's runs Windows 7 Home and it does not come with gpedit.msc.

I downloaded the Group Policy Settings References for Windows 7 and Windows Server Excel file (Download: Group Policy Settings Reference for Windows and Windows Server - Microsoft Download Center - Download Details), and scrolled down to the Windows Updates lines at the end of the Administrative Templates tab; but I was unable to find the registry references in my registry. Specifically in order to enable "Do Not Adjust Default Option to Install Updates and Shut Down", I could not find the registry entries listed in the spreadsheet under either the HKCU or HKLM portions of my registry.

Does anybody know which registry settings I need to change to enable the choice to shut down with/without installing updates, or if i is possible to enable gpedit.msc to run on a Windows 7 Home PC?

Many thanks in advance for your help.

A:windows update and firewall stops

Hello,

What might have happened here is the Windows services for these programs have been disabled. This is an easy fix. Follow my steps below:

1. Press the Windows Key + R to open the Run dialog.
2. In the dialog, type "services.msc" (without the quotes). Figure 1
3. Locate Windows Update... Figure 2
3. ...and Windows Defender. Figure 3
4. Right-click on Windows Defender and select Properties.
5. Under Startup Type, select Automatic. Figure 4
6. Do the same for Windows Update. Figure 5

Restart your computer and you should be good to go.
If you are still getting the message, reply to this message.

EDIT: Woah sorry, instead of Windows Defender, find Windows Firewall instead and do step 5 for it too.

If you find my posts helpful, please help me out by pressing the little "Add to techhead287's Reputation" button at the top of this post. Thanks!
