Comp Wont Turn ON is it the PSU or the Mobo

Q: Comp Wont Turn ON is it the PSU or the Mobo

Well my computer doesn't turn on anymore. It was working fine and then the power cord of the surge got unplugged from the outlet. Needless to say the comp wont turn on anymore. I was wondering if its the psu or the mobo that has messed up. When I plug in the comp the steady power light turns on, on the mobo which i assume it means it receiving some type of power. But when I press the power button the led lights of comp flash on and then turn back off. So does anybody know if its the psu or the mobo that is damaged?

Preferred Solution: Comp Wont Turn ON is it the PSU or the Mobo

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Comp Wont Turn ON is it the PSU or the Mobo

Probably Power Supply (hard to say really)

Just for a quick option:

Remove the power cord
Hold the On button in for 30 secs (releasing all internal voltage)
Put the power cord back in (securely)
Turn on (I hope)

I just replaced my old board, processor, and memory in my backup comp with an MSI K8T Neo-V board, AMD Athlon 3800, and 1gb memory. I got it all set up, and powered it on, but the fans kicked for a sec, and the power LED flashed on, but went off almost instantly. I re-seated everything, and unplugged all unnecessary devices (HDD's, etc), and it still did the same thing. I'm thinking it might be power supply, but it worked immediately before the upgrade. Any thoughts?

THe Hard Driver i think is the problem.

the yellow LED on the front is flashing. Whatever I do to the computer it wont turn on, so I pulled the power cord out to stop it(the led that was flashing). When I plugged it back in today, it just started flashing again. The computer is off but it still flashes, . instead of turnign on It just flashes this yellow light. Any ideas? i am runing windows Xp home and a 71GB hard driver
it worked fine when changed the hard driver to another hard driver(20GB Windows Xp media center). i pluged the 71GB as slave and it steal wont turn on.
i really need to access that hard drive my entire website data is in there.
PLease if some one can help me

Thanx in advence

A:HELP MY COMP. Wont turn on

Hi Igli and welcome to the Techspot Forum

First its a Hard Drive not a hard driver, from your post I can only guess that the 71GB Hard Drive has failed, either mechanically or electronically.

Suggestions, go to the maufacturers website and download the test tool for the drive in question and test it, sorry to say if the test tool finds it faulty then all your data is gone.

Regards

any suggestions??

A:New comp wont turn on

Don't worry this happens all the time! Remember to power off before disconnecting anything. Do you get any beeps? 1 beep is good - more beeps is bad and can tell you what is going wrong.
First take out the motherboard and make sure that there not too many stand-offs; any extras can short out the board.
If this is OK, check you have all the front panel connections on the right pins - an LED connection on the reset button for example will stop it booting.
If this still does not sort it, disconnect everything and take out all the cards except the front panel and power supply cables. Does it boot? Reconnect one thing at a time and that will tell you what is causing the problem.
Get back to us!

We have a comp plugged into a surge protector, and when you flip the switch, it won't turn on unless you flip it on-off for about a minute (literally) We tried plugging it into the wall, and a different surge protector, and same problem. Is the relay switch inside the comp going bad?? If so, how do we fix it?

A:Comp wont turn on

Where did the bright flash come from?
If you're lucky it's just the power supply. Worst case scenario? Everything in it is fried.
I'd try a different power supply first, then take it from there.

ok, so lets start like this: i dont know too much about computers, but i did a little research. i know what the motherboard is and i know that the actual power button on the tower just sends the signal to switch on or off to the power supply unit... And i havent done anything to my computer recently just have gone online. So All i did was shut my computer down last night, and it WOULDNT TURN ON this morning.
- i already tried unplugging and plugging back in, and changed the the power bar. everything else on the bar works (my light, the monitor, the dsl box, and the speakers) except the computer base.
PLEASE HELP!!

I'm running a Prescott P4 3.2 gHz, 1.5 gigs of ram, nVidia 5500 card, on an ASRock Motherboard model p4v88, running WinXp sp2 and every single update...

Last night I shut down the system before I left with no problems. I haven't had *any* problems with it, really, as long as I've owned it. I take great care of it and it's been devoid of viruses or disk error or anything since I've had it (only 5 months). Also no BIOS updates in a long time, and no windows updates in a few weeks.

This morning I pushed power and the fans whirred up for maybe a half a second before the system turned off. I pushed power again and the same thing happened. I unplugged everything from the back but the power, same. I opened it up (unplugged) and pulled out the ram - same. Uplugged the harddrives - same. Cdroms/pci cards/video card/ etc., until the only thing that was plugged in was the motherboard. I'm still having the same problem. The little green LED on the front of the case remains lit even tho the sys isn't on. I think the PSU is okay... what the hell could the problem be? The computer was plugged into a surge protector so I don't think it got a shock. I haven't like spilled water on it or anthing.. ahh...

A:MOBO wont Turn Off...But works fine

Your motherboard may not be 100% ACPI compatible... I think that was the term..

Basically it is like old 95/98 days when windows would shutdown and give you the message on your screen sayin it is now safe to turn your computer off.

I think the same applies here... when and if you installed your o/s did you have any problems with the install. did you get a blue screen saying something like your system is not fully acpi compatible and to restart windows setup and hit the F8 or F10 key... one of them (not the F6 it is used to install 3rd party Device drivers)...
I had the same problem with my old ABIT NF7-S ver1.2 motherboard. no problems other than having to power it off manually after a shutdown, which was very seldom..... ( I suspected there was a motherboard problem because i could not get the darn thing to boot to anything other than the floppy drive or IDE hard drive so i replaced that with the ABIT NF7-S2 and it works like a charm..... You may want to contact the manufacturer of the board to verify its ACPI compatibility

hello and to start off i'd like to thank anyone who takes time to read this and try to help me out, thank you.

I'm running win xp sp2.

On July 1st an infected file was downloaded and run. AVG and Winpatrol noticed this and prompted the user to take action. The user checked to block all changes that the infected file tried to make, and deleted the file. Then music started to come from the speakers. All kinds of completly random stuff that is not installed on the computer. In task manager there was a file "c.exe" after ending this process the music stopped and it never came back. I don't know if it is related, but the next day the computer started to have problems.

Gaim 99% of the time hangs and timeouts when trying to connect a screen name. I do not have a firewall and windows one is disabled.

To get firefox to work, i had to open the browser, it wouldnt appear on screen but the process showed in task manager. Then i used task manager to end the process tree. Then when i opened the browser it would open but run slowly. This no longer works. Now when i click to open it nothing happens and the process does not show up in task manager.

Internet explorer works fine and that is what i'm using to write this. The computer was also having this overall lag with everything i'd try to do on it. Ex: open the start menu, open folders, etc. However as of this last computer restart, not that i've done anything to fix it, the computer runs at normal spe... Read more

I consider myself very tech savvy but this issue has me stumped. I had an MSI K9A2 Platinum motherboard, Phenom black edition processor, 630 watt power supply. One day, it decided to die on me. It shut down and never came back up. If I unplugged the power cord and plugged it back in the fan would give a short sign of life then nothing.
The moboard light (green) would come on but other than that there was no sign of power. I was not sure if the issue was motherboard or power supply so I went to Frys and bought a new mobo and PSU. Came home, got everything hooked up, installed Windows 7, and everything seemed fine. Power was on, comp was booting. I started installing my previous software with no issue. Then, as I was reading something online the comp shut down. No power, same sign of life as before minus the green light since there isn't one on the MSI K9A2 CF board I bought. The fan give a quick partial spin then nothing. Both PSU and board are brand new. I have tried removing my video cards, ram, drives, etc just to see if one of them was the issue. No luck. Now I'm sitting here with a very expensive paper weight not knowing why it won't power up.
I hope someone out there has an answer.
Peace to you all.

i have 3 processors!i am a bit stuck on which processor would be my best bet to build a good gaming computer with, they might be old but i reckon i could use one of them as i need to watch my pennys!il start with the newest to the oldest.i have no mobo's and need some advice on a good mobo and some good hardware,as i have 2 40gb hard drives and an old phillips cd/dvd burner!should i buy local in ireland or does it matter?does anyone know of some really good websites that sell comp parts.

1. intel Pentium 4 531 SL8HZ MALAY 3.00GHZ/1M/800/04A
2.Intel Pentium 4 2.80 GHZ/1M/800/04A SL7PR MALAY
3.Intel Pentium 4 2001,2.66ghz/512/533,sl6pe china

I think its between 1 and 2 and i think 1 would be the strongest and fastest but i need some advice!thanks alot!

A:Which processor and mobo for gaming comp?

Its likely the first one, as has the highest clock speed. However, none of them are really going to be very useful for gaming on all the very oldest of games.

Some more information is required on the sorts of games you wish to play before even spending some money, as what your hoping for might not be possible for the budget you have in mind.

Buying in Ireland, or online is fine.

Greetings,

After apparently one of my motherboards decided to stop working I decided to upgrade my computer, and finally learn how to build one myself.

A bit of backstory on this:
Since I have warranty on the old motherboard, they took it in order to test it but they have not managed to test it yet. Basically over the course of the week before it died I kept having more and more hangs and missed POSTs, and eventually it stopped POSTing every time. Either way once we opened it up we found one of the little fans (probably the southbridge cooler, I'm not sure) stopped working. The keyboard also was not receiving power, but the motherboard LED would power on. (OTT the motherboard was an A8N-SLI)

Now, I bought a e8400, 2X1gigs of 667mhz patriot ram, and a P5KPL-CM motherboard. I specifically wanted a microATX board since I probably will buy a LANbox later on.

Now this is the first time I'm putting something together, but I've done a LOT of reading up on this subject and used the utmost care when putting it together.

While I was putting it together I realized that one of the screwholes on the motherboard did not have a corresponding spacer hole under it. I decided to leave it without a screw, thinking it is unimportant.

The LG775 cooler was kind of hard to push in though, I was worried I might crack the board pressing it down!

Now once everything was put together I plugged it in, pressed the power button, and heard a small chirp. Oh dear.

IF the cpu heatsink is not properly attached boot failure is likely (actually, it is the Intel CPU thermal protection shutdown action that is happening).

My sons comp quit on him last week and i have no idea what is wrong. it will show his vid card info and his mobo info and that is it. I tried re-installing the win 7 os, but nothing happens. i think maybe the cd rom is bad, but shouldnt it boot up anyway? i dont know if or how to boot from a usb drive. Could that be a way around the problem, or does it sound like maybe the hdd is bad? Any help will be appreciated. thanx

A:Comp shows vid card and mobo info then nothing

Hi watcher 6342,

You say you tried to reinstall Windows, did the machine boot that far? or did it just go as far as the first Motherboard and Graphic card screen?

If the latter, then the machine is failing the POST (Power On Self Test) this means that you have some faulty hardware somewhere.

First and foremost, you have already identified the CD drive as possibly bad. If it is causing a problem then the machine may well refuse to POST because the SATA controller cannot initialise properly. It seems to me, (and I admit I don't have a massive amount of knowledge in this area, beyond what I have just said) that the first course of action would be to try unplugging the CD drive from the SATA port.

hi, new user, i came here with the direst need. for months my new system worked like a dream, but suddenly it stopped working. at first it was giving me a beep code that meant the ram was bad-or not present- but i put it in another board and it worked fine. then i discovered my board has some problems with certain brands of ram operating at 800mhz, so i clocked it back to 667 and it worked fine for a few days. now, it boots up to windows, gets a few minutes in, and then freezes or restarts (it just restarts, i can hear the drives spinning up, but i get no display). the temp is high, but well within limits (around 40 at boot, rising to 50 at windows), ive done everything i know to do. i suspected at first it was the mobo, but now im suspicious of the power supply. please help! im at wits end here !!

Synopsis: PSU died, replaced PSU with different model, system boots to bios successfully but does not recognize any devices in SATA ports, nor do those devices appear to be getting power. Now can't even get to BIOS, entire PC flicks on and off repeatedly as soon as I turn the PSU on regardless of whether I hit the power button on the front of the computer.

System Specifications

Original PSU that died: SeaSonic M12II 750 SS-750AM 750w PSU
CPU: Intel Core i5-3570K Ivy Bridge 3.4GHz
GPUs: ASUS 670 non-top version, SLI (2x)
MOBO: ASRock Z77 extreme 6
RAM: Mushkin Enhanced Blackline 8GB (2 x 4GB) SDRAM DDR3 2133
Optical drive: Sony AD-7280S-0B 24x SATA Internal DVD+/-RW Drive
SSD: SanDisk Extreme 240GB SATA 6.0 Gb-s 2.5-Inch (OS is installed here)
Storage drive: Western Digital Caviar Black 1 TB SATA III (This was not connected when power supply died)

Detailed explanation:About a week ago my PSU (Seasonic 750w) died randomly while the computer was left running in sleep . I RMA'd the dead seasonic. In the mean time I happened to come accross an extremely good deal on a new PSU, so I bought it (Thermaltake smart m850w PSU) to have a backup and to get my machine working again.

I hooked up the new PSU to GPUs, CPU, fans, ATX power connector, and to all of the SATA devices, (the SSD, the HDD, and the Optical drive). I made sure to connect the data cables to the SATA devices in the same configuration they were in when working properly. The computer boots suc... Read more

A:PSU died, new PSU, bios wont recognize SATA devices, now wont turn on

I had a similar problem when I had an Antec PSU die on me. After I replaced it, my Biostar mobo's BIOS would no longer retain settings, and both my Pioneer DVD burners were completely dead. Not recognized in the BIOS, they would not acknowledge any discs inserted, nothing worked. I also started getting BSODs pointing to a corrupt BIOS. Replacing the burners didn't help. Putting the Pioneer burners in a new machine didn't work.

It turned out that the dying Antec PSU had wrecked the Biostar's BIOS chip and both Pioneer DVD burners. Replacing the BIOS chip was more expensive than buying a new motherboard, and reflashing the chip wasn't possible because the flash utility told me I already had the latest BIOS version. I ended up trashing the board and buying an ASRock board and Samsung burners.

If you get a new motherboard (or try another known-good working PC), and you connect your present SATA devices and they don't work, then the dying Seasonic may have burnt them out, too.

Please Help!

I just built a AMD 64 X2 5600 with an Asus m2n-e mobo and 2 gigs patriot ram and a Geforce 8600gt vid card with a 320 gig maxtor hard drive. The computer started upfine the first time and I was able to use it without a problem. A few days later when I turned it on I noticed a slightly wierd noise that was like a ticking sound but not very loud. I thought a fan was catching a wire but when I took it apart I found nothing. So I let it continue to run and after playing a game for 4 hours it just died. The comp completly shut off as if the power had gone out. I turned the power on again and it started up fine so I continued to play for awhile. The next day it randomly died again after playing COD4 for maybe 30 minutes and then it would not turn back on. The mobo green light is on signaling power but nothing will turn on. I have 120mm fan running to the mobo and it will not start nor the CPU fan. However, the 80mm fan I ran straight to the power supply and that still turns on, so I don't think the power supply is bad.

Any suggestion or comments would be greatly appreciated!

note: I did buy the Asus m2ne as a refurbished mobo so I am thinking that maybe it is a bad one and I should just return it but I wanted to see what you guys think first.

Purchased computer roughly one year ago, custom made

These are the symptoms I was having before in order of occurrence.

1: Loud cackling/beeping noises would come from my speakers, even if I turned them off, during the noise my computer would lag a bit, mouse would move slowly ect for the 3-5 seconds of noise, it would go away and things would be fine.

2:Computer started having problems shutting down and rebooting, I thought it was the moinitor but tried 2 others to find that the system wasnt rebooting properly. Would take 2-3 resets to boot up, sometimes Windows would freeze at the XP screen. Rarely though. I left my computer on for spans of 2 days to get around the booting problem.

3:Started to encounter freezes while playing an online game, rarely, which then started occuring more often just while browsing the internet. Started taking more resets to eventually boot. No Beeps at all while booting, ran a virus scan ect. Saw in device manager that a RAID controller device had a ? next to it and i remember seeing that a couplemonths ago and ignoring it, well i got the drivers off the mobo disk and installed them for the RAID and still booting issue was same.

Talked to some friends online and all said it was probly the mobo, due to freezes and no beeps at boot.

My computer will not shut completely off when I shut it down. The light for the wireless internet connect does not go black, it turns orange, saying that it is off but now the orange light does not come off unless I hold the power button down.  Also when my computer goes to sleep, when I press a key to turn it back on, it does not turn on. The screen stays black and the wireless internet connection light is orange. It does not boot back up anymore.

Hi, Try the following. Open Settings and select System.  Select Power and sleep, then click on Additional power settings - in the following window, click on 'Choose what the power button does' in the left hand pane. In the subsequent window, first click on 'Change settings that are currently unavailable' ( near the top of the Window ) and then remove the checkmark from the box against 'Turn on fast start-up (recommended)'.  Click the Save Settings button, then close any open windows and restart the notebook. When windows has reloaded, download the IMEI driver directly from Intel on the following link, unzip the package and run the installer. https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/26127/Intel-Management-Engine-Consumer-Driver-for-Intel-NU... When the installation has completed, restart the notebook. When the machine has reloaded, re-enable Fast Start-up and reboot the notebook once again - let Windows fully load for a few minutes before checking. Regards, DP-K

Hi What OS are you running?

Have you tried any of the following:

On Windows XP try running windows defender in case of spyware etc, or try one of the others searchanddestroy etc.

Check you have all latest updates.

Make sure you have no programs running when you shut down. try doing control + alt +delete viewing task manager and then seeing if you have any hi mem usuage programs running.

Has everything closed properly before you shut down?

Has this problem arisen recently and may you have installed something to cause it.

The light on the mobo is on, which i assume would mean it is getting power. I switched out the power supply. Still nothing. Am i correct in assuming that eather the MOBO or the CPU has gone bad?

Yesterday I received by mail, my ASRock 4COREDUAL-SATA2 motherboard and my Dual Core E2160 processor. I decided that it was time to pack away the old P4 and dusty mobo I had for years. Removed the old mobo and such fine. Installed the new mobo without a hitch. (This is my first time doing this, but I'm fairly confident that I didn't screw anything up.) I installed the processor, by putting it the chip and pulling the lever to snug it in place. Popped the heatsink on (which had preapplied thermal paste) and then tightened down the pins, which took some time (and I'm still not sure if I did it right).

Anyways, I put in the psu, and hooked everything up to my understanding. 20-pin cord, 4-pin cord. The power switch, reset switch, hdd and power lights. Hooked the cd-rom, hdd, ram, pci expansions, agp video card, everything in properly. I go to turn on the pc, switch from both I / O on the back of the psu (at 120V), and I get nothing. Not a light, no spinning of the fan.

-I've double checked that this socket in the wall works, but have tried multiple.
-I've installed my old motherboard again just to make sure that the power connectors and the power supply were still good. They are.
-I've rearranged the positioning and such of the power connectors and lights.

The only thing that I can think of is that it was dead on arrival (which I'm doubting) No broken capacitors. The board was neatly wrapped in an anti-static bag. The bag hardly had a crease... Read more

Today I recieved my new ASRock 4COREDUAL-SATA2 Mobo and my Dual Core E2160 in the mail, and decided that it was time to shove my old Mobo and Processor in the closet. I then proceeded to carefully remove all of my pci and agp adapters, ram, power supply and the what not out of my casing. I then unscrewed the Mobo and took it out of the case. Placed the new one in, fitted it the I/O, and then screwed it in properly.

I then opened the processor casing, popped the processor in, pulled the level back, and secured the processor. I then installed the heatsink over the processor. Had a bit of trouble getting the pins down but I'm pretty sure that it's secure enough now. I then starting to hook up my pci and agp adapters again, then popped in my power supply and put each plug in its rightful place.

Now, my problem now is that when I press the power button. Nothing simply happens. No light on the Mobo lights up. The fans don't spin. I get nothing.

I've been grounding my fingers on the metal casing for hours, to ensure that I don't fry my hardware, and I highly doubt that I did, but I'm just getting no power here.

I thought that it may have been my power sw, hdd led, reset sw, and power led connections, but I'm after trying them in every possible position that they can go in, and nothing is changing.

This is the first PC that I've put together on my own, and I've followed both the processor and Mobo manual to a T.

Hi there! I've a problem with my computer. After I'd updated the BIOS (my mobo: Gigabyte GA-P35-S3) the machine stopped turning off. I mean, the fans still worked, the monitor stopped responding, the led on chassis was on. But someone helped me on IRC - told me what to change in the settings and it worked. Unfortunately after I'd updated the BIOS again I deleted the backup and it doesn't work. In Gigabyte they said to flash the BIOS to the new beta, and when it didn't help - to change the mobo in the shop. Can someone please help me?

A:It is now safe to turn of your comp.

1) Check that your system is ACPI compliant
- in "Device manger" expand the "computer" icon and check if states Advanced Power management

2) Test in safe mode - If the problem is not present in safe mode, then mostlikely the issue is releated to a 3rd party application hanging the system during the shut down process.

If the problem is still present in safe mode, then you may need to toggle some settings in the BIOS (power management etc..)
or you may need to update the system BIOS

Well basically a few days ago my computer screen would go black in the middle of playing a game and it would force me to restart my computer because I couldn't do anything. I thought it was a bug with titan quest since it hadn't happened in half life 2 or WoW. Sadly this morning after 5 minutes of playing WoW the same thing happened so I restarted and tried half life 2. The game almost immediately did the same thing and when I tried to restart my computer won't even turn on properly. It sounds like it is running fine but I get no picture and the 3 lock lights dont come on when I try.

My luck with my computer has been nothing but bad in the past year. I am now on my third hard drive, 3rd Graphics card, 2nd motherboard, and almost needed a new sound card. If anyone is able to help me, please do because all of this money I have pretty much put down the drain has led me to think I should just forget about fixing it and sell the parts and spend my money on something else.

A:Comp won't turn on. And im not technical

It might help if you listed your PC specifications. You shouldn't change that switch on the back. You adjust that according to the wall socket current. In the USA the default would be 115V. Changing it to 250V could blow the power supply. If nothing happened when you did that, your power supply might be dead already. The other thing is when the power supply blows, it sometimes takes out other components. That didn't necessarily happen but I bring it up only as a possibility.
