I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I'm trying to connect a Sony VAIO PCG-GRT100 laptop computer to my network with a mini-PCI Intel 2100 3A 'b' card.

I used to have a Linksys PCMCIA wireless card - and it worked perfectly, but I didn't like having a big thing sticking out of the side. So - I got a mini-PCI card out of a Dell laptop (that I upgraded from just 'b' to a 2200 'b' and 'g' card), and thought I would put it into the Sony.

I installed the drivers, slotted in the card, connected the AUX and MAIN antennae, booted up - the computer recognised the card just fine - shows up in the control panel, and SYSTEM folder, etc.

BUT - when I search for networks I get nothing - "No wireless networks found". The laptop is sitting 4 feet from the router (a Netgear WGR614 by the way), and my other laptop 'see' about 8 network access points normally (I'm in a block of apartments / flats).

So - it appears the 'hardware switch' is turned off on the adaptor. Windows Control Panel / HW can't turn it on - but since this isn't a Centrino laptop - there's no button or switch to turn it on.

WHat can I do - the mini-PCI card is covered in plastic - is there a manual switch I can throw if I strip it off?

Any suggestions would be welcome!

Is it possible for me to upgrade my 32MB ATI Mobility Radeon Video Card of my Latop to say 128MB ATI card on my own. Or I can get it upgraded only from Sony.

A:Graphics Card upgrade for SONY VAIO Laptop

It certainly seems this is possible. Have a look at this:-

but remember, the 32Mb is borrowing that from your system - can your RAM spare 128? You're a brave person to go fishing around inside a laptop. Maybe a Sony upgrade wouldn't be as expensive as a slip of a scredriver in a tight space.

If you are getting a 169.XXX.XXX address, it means the computer is not getting an IP address assigned from the router.

Several common things can cause this. The modem is not configured for DHCP, the cable, network card or port on the modem are defective.

About 1 month ago, I purchased the 2wire Home Portal and a 2wire wireless pc card for my Gateway Windows ME laptop. My desktop works fine connected by ethernet to get online. I can connect my laptop via USB no problem. So they both can be online at the same time, but they are both wired. I can't get the PC card to work. I've spoke to SBC support about 5 times, and they have me do something different every time. The wireless card is still not working. The laptop recognizes the card is in, but when I check status in device manager, it says "The device is either not present, not working properly, or does not have all the drivers installed. (Code 10)." Now I've uninstalled the card and reinstalled, updated the drivers from the installation CD, did windows update, and check all sorts of stuff with SBC support people. When I put the card in, I here a beep and the Unplug Eject Hardware icon shows up in the task bar. So I know it recognizes it. Samething when I eject it, it beeps. There are 2 lights that are supposed to come on on the card but they don't. They are the LINK light and the ACT light. Support says there's nothing wrong with the card, but they can't help me. Has anyone had this same problem, and how did you fix it?

I have an older Medion akoya p6618 laptop running W7 x86. The option for wireless in windows has vanished, like the pc doesn't have a wireless card, just as it would appear on a normal desktop pc - only LAN. It works fine with cable. Device manager shows no wireless option either. I have tried system restore, then formatting and dl'ing wlan and lan drivers from the medion website. Same problem. When i try to enable wifi using the Fn keyboard shortcut, nothing happens. The little led does not turn on.

At this point I'm feeling like card is just broken and that it is a hardware issue. What do you think? I'm considering buying a dongle like this one (TP-LINK TL-WN725N Netv?rksadapter USB 2.0 | Model: TL-WN725N | pc-lager.dk). Would this thing enable me to have wifi?

Any help is appreciated.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that when I did a system restore it worked temporarily and I had internet access, but after a restart it stopped working. In the past it was hit or miss whether or not it would work, so again I'm leaning towards a hardware issue. Maybe there are some things I missed, though.

So I recently got this Linksys wireless-g router WRT54GS2. And my other PC has an external 2Wire 802.11g USB Wireless Lan card. Well the way the software that came with the router works was it has me basically allow each device that connects to it. Well I can get the 2wire card to get an actually really good connection to the routers network, but when I go to allow it on the router it does not show up as a device that's connected to the router.

I do know a little of what I'm doing. I named the network something odd like smurfs and so I know the card is in fact connecting to it. But for some reason I cannot get the router to see the 2wire card. Is it possible these aren't compatible with eachother?

Any help or tips would be great. I didn't think it would give me this much trouble.

A:2Wire Lan Card + Linksys Wireless Router compatible?

They certainly should be compatible.

Have you removed all the stored wireless network profiles and searched for the network? Have you tried removing all encryption from the router to see if it connects that way?
Download and run this Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector, post a screen shot of the main screen here.
To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file. To upload it to the forum, open the full reply window and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here.

I have a SONY Vaio Laptop and have recently been trying to install USB card readers. I purchased a Stratitec card reader and it says I should use the General USB Mass Storage Driver....

When I install this device to my laptop, there is no problem at all...instantly recognizes it and works.

Does anyone know how I can get this to work on my SONY laptop? I know that SONY has their own digital memory sticks and has a slot on this computer to read their memory sticks...but alas...I also have compact flash cards that I want to read.

I truly appreciate any and all help. I am a novice, so please keep that in mind when explaining to me.

Did you look through the Vaio troubleshooting guide?

Sony : Support for VPCEB1Z0E/B | VPCEB1Z0E/B technical support

My guide says:
-Make sure the computer is securely plugged into a power source.
-Make sure the power source is working.
-Make sure battery pack is installed properly and charged. Or remove battery pack and try using AC adapter only.
-Disconnect all USB devices and try to restart computer.
-Remove all memory modules except for one and try to restart. If more than one module, try each module separately.
-If computer is plugged into a power strip or UPS make sure power strip or UPS is working by plugging computer directly into mains outlet.
-Unplug power cord/AC adapter and remove battery pack. Wait ten minutes then reinstall battery pack and plug power cord/AC adapter back in. Try to restart.
-High humidity can cause condensation. Make sure all contacts are moisture free.

These are just some of the quick troubleshooting steps.

I've installed windows 8 pro on a Sony VAIOVPCEB3E1E/PI

Managed to sort everything out apart from the SD Card reader. Device manager recognises the card reader as :

Ricoh PCIe Memory Stick Host Controller

Then when I plug in the SD card I usually use as readyboost, I get an audible ding that it's noticed something there, and it also installs to device manager something called :

SD Storage Class Controller

This however has a yellow exclamation mark, and nothing I do or any driver from the Sony website will fix it.

Pre Windows8 Pro , I had the consumer preview installed, that worked fine and I could use the readyboost.

Anyone got any idea's?

From my experience helping others with this driver, just download the latest and greatest from any distributor. For example, ASUS, ACER, HP etc...

Install and done. Check Device Manager dates to see that the install worked.

I have searched the forums for a similar problem and the most I can discern is that Sony Vaios are a pain in the rear... Here is the situation:

I have a Sony Vaio PCG-SR5K that recently had a hard disk failure which apparently wiped out the OS on the disk (or at least fried the boot sector). One day I was working and abruptly got the blue screen of death, after which attempts to start the computer resulted only in a message of "OS not found".

I have the "recovery" disks for the machine but not the actual "install" disks for the OS, as apparently Sony does not trust it's customers with a copy of the actual software... However, this is not the main problem.

The problem is that the PC card slot stopped working a while back, and this is the method by which the CD-ROM drive that came with the machine attaches. After I could no longer use this drive I simply started using another USB linked CD-ROM drive to read CDs with. However, the machine WILL NOT BOOT from any device other than the hard drive (which is messed up) or a disk drive connected via the PC card slot (which is broken).

Theoretically the machine could still work if I could only get an OS back on it. I have read that Vaios are a complete pain in the rear to work around problems with. The only reason I have the thing is that I got it for free (that tells you something) and I use it mainly for email and internet browsing. (I also have a desktop - NOT a Sony) but it is nicer... A:OS reinstall on Sony Vaio with broken PC card slot - is it possible?

I don't know if this gets to you since the post you made is over 9 months old but I too have the same problem with my SR5K and wish to know how to install the OS without the PC card slot. I've tried installing the HD to another PC and install the OS this way, but when I reinstall the HD to the SR5K, the screen comes up with the "No OS Found" warning. Apparently the recovery disks must embed some information that the BIOS is looking for to say the OS installed on the HD is legit. I think Sony in many ways has cheated it's customers by preventing us to load the OS in any way we desire. It is a crime. If anyone reads this post and knows how to circumvent this problem, Please send some advice. I am sure there are many out there that have broken PCMCIA PC slots that prevents themfrom loading a recovery disk and find themselves in the same predictament.....My only solution to this problem has been to use my sister's working SR5K notebook (yes I am lucky to know someone with the same notebook) and install my HD in her notebook, load the recovery disk and then install this HD back into my SR5K....other than that I am lost to find a solution.

My Sony VAIO TX770 (Win XP Pro w/ SP2) freezes from time to time, sometimes during boot up, sometimes after running for a while. Every time this happens, the indicator light for the card readers (memory stick and SD) turns on even though there is no card inside the slot. Sometimes I can unfreeze the system by pressing down the case in the area above the card reader slots. Therefore it appears that the problem is caused by sporadic malfunction of the card reader.

The source of the card reader malfunction is probably due to soda spilled into the slots, which occurred several months ago when I was on an airplane.

I would appreciate your advice what I can do to prevent the system freeze in the future. I have never used the card readers, therefore I will be happy to learn how to kill the card reader if that will solve the problem. (I have disabled the card readers in device manager; however, the problem still recurs.)

Thanks very much!

I have to ask-- was this a Cola????

the syrup that Coke and Pepsi put in their drinks to make a Cola --instead of say
Sprite or Seven-Up-- is corrosive.

when I haul a load of syrup for Coke I have to put a Oxidizer (Haz-Mat) Placard
on my trailer.

so I would say you are down to a trip to a computer repair shop.
probably were ever the soda came in contact with the card reader elements
inside of the slots is corroded --

if the warranty is void and you feel adventurous you could try to remove the main
back panel on the laptop and see if the card slots are on-board integrated chip
or hooked up by wires to a motherboard header??

you will have to wait on a post from some one more into laptops than I am---
if wires and you cut them????

Very few notebooks use discrete graphics cards. I believe that your notebook isn't one of them; its graphics controller is probably soldered to the motherboard.

The card that you mention is for desktop PCs (PCI-E X16 slot), so you couldn't use it even if the notebook had discrete graphics.

I have a Sony Vaio VCG-LS20 series all-in-one desktop. 1.5 years ago, the computer started shutting down abruptly while watching movies online. At first, it would turn back on and be fine unless I started watching a video. At some point, it would only boot properly if I went through BIOS. At some point, the graphics got extremely distorted and eventually the computer stopped booting up. I took it to a repair guy, and he said it was the graphics card and it's integrated into the motherboard so can't be replaced. He was able to fix it, however, so that it was working fine for about 6 months, then the same thing started happening again. Now, I can't boot it up no matter what I try. I would really like to get this thing working again. It has Phoenix BIOS and the BIOS code that I heard (before it completely was unbootable) indicated that it is a video card issue. If I replace the motherboard, are the odds good that the prob will be fixed? Is it difficult to replace the motherboard in this model?

Thank you!

Hey guys,

I slung an SSD drive into the laptop a couple of months ago but after installing everything else without an issue, the SD card slots aren't working.
Frustrating as I've got some work I need from my SD cards onto the laptop

My laptop is a Sony Vaio VPCF11Z1E, running Win 7 & all up-to-date.
I found the drivers on the sony site (Sony : VPCF11Z1E/BI updates | Download updates for VPCF11Z1E/BI) but each time I've unistalled the default drivers it doesn't seem to let install the ones I downloaded (via the device manager). If I try to update it, win7 seems to be a smart arse and not allow me to use the drivers I want.

Any help would be much appreciated, I think this is the only time since about '96 I've had this issue)
Temp work around:
Sling cards into gopro - and hook up via USB, heh.

Saw similar problem below but my computer is brand new (out the box today) Sony Vaio VPCEH14FM came with on board Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit. When I input my SD card, the card reader lights up briefly so its seeing it, but it is not appearing on my computer and when i try and run the extra drives nothing shows up.

When I plug my mini sd into the usb port it works, but id like to figure out the actual sd slot for my camera

As it is brand new, you need to get the matter put right by the reseller while your Sony is under warranty.

Since I've upgraded to Windows 7 64 bit from Vista, the webcam and sd card reader that are built into my laptop will not work. I have searched for drivers on the Sony site and they have not worked, and I have also downloaded some Ricoh drivers but to no avail.

I wonder if anyone knows the solution to get my webcam and sd reader back in action.

First off this is a Sony Vaio with a P4 3.2ghz with 2gb of ram and Windows XP Media Center. Important to note that the floppy drive/memory card reader is all 1 part, with 1 power cable and 1 floppy sized IDE going into the back.

So about 2 months ago, the power went out at my house and the power supply on my desktop ate it. Not to difficult to replace, but anyways, afterwards everything worked fine. Fast forward to Thanksgiving, and randomly a friend shows up to my house with his thesis, on two floppy disks (go team go!) So I pop the first floppy in, and the green light comes on, leading me to believe that it's working, but no dice. When I click the A: drive in my computer it just says "Please insert a disk". So I take the floppy out and realize that my floppy drive light, is not permanently lit. Since it's the floppy drive however, I go about my business. The real issue showed up about a week ago now. I used my card reader just fine about 2 weeks ago, I have photos on my computer to prove it(because I started to doubt whether I'd used it since the power supply problem) I hardly ever actually turn my computer off, and I think about a week ago it forced itself to restart because of windows updates, but when it came back on, there is no sign off life for my memory card reader. My Computer doesn't show the 4 drives it used to, there aren't any devices in device manager that have little yellow flags or anything like that. So I did a quick scan ... Read more

Hi all
I've got a sony VAIO laptop with two slots on the front for SD/MMC cards and the sonu pro duo cards.

Works perfectly on W7 but on W8 only the SD card is recognized -- I copied the drivers from W7 (at first W8 didn't recognize the card at all) but after installing only SD cards were recognized.

The card reader is some RICOH model but I think these are probably Taiwanese "clones" of some T.I (Texas Instruments) earlier model.

Of course the Sony site is about as useful as a portable refridgerator at the South Pole - only a minimal amount of drivers are available for the model and of course there is no "install" disk with all the drivers etc on.
I really don't like the whole idea these days of selling PC's with no disks and just having a "Recovery" partition.
At the least there should be a "Drivers and applications" folder but that's another whole issue.
Anybody with a sony VAIO got the sony pro DUO reader to work yet -- note the SD/MMC reader works fine and recognizes those cards.

This isn't a show stopper but it's always nice to have EVERYTHING working.

Reading on the specifications sheet for my laptop it says...
"ATI Radeon IGP 345M chipset integrated graphics with 3D performance and 128mb VRAM"

Now, integrated graphics are by no way good for playing games, but for some (such as The Sims 2 which demands a faster PC if you have integreated graphics) then I have a fast enough PC to cope OK with them - 2.93ghz.

However, when going into the graphics card/chipset properties it only says 64mb Ram. When contacting sony they give me useless info like "Yes, the memory is shared and can be increased to 128mb, as it states on your specifications sheet".

Ok, how would you do that? Can you increase the shared memory from 64mb to 128mb VRAM?

Please help

A:Video Card on Sony Vaio K315B - increase memory?

This will most likely be done in the BIOS setup of the laptop. Not sure what key is used to get in to the BIOS on a Sony but try F10, F2, F1, or DEL. You can also press ESC or TAB to clear the Sony logo for more information when the laptop is booting. Once in the BIOS finhd the settings for the integrated graphics and up the shared memory size to 128MB. You laptop manual should help with this a little bit.

Of course this will decrease the availiable system memory by an additional 64 MB.

I have a Sony Vaio laptop with intel HD4000 and a radeon 7670m running Windows 8. Will using the leshcat labs drivers enable switchable graphics for me? I was also told I shouldn't install the latest drivers from ATI, just use the ones Sony releases. Is this true or is this just what Sony tech support is supposed to say?

Here is the problem that i am having. My computer wont recognize my pcmcia card for a wireless network. The card works fine in other computers, and other cards work fine in my computer. My wireless network card has worked before in my laptop, but for some reason it wont now. What steps should I go about to get it to recognize it. Could it be that I have already ignored the "found a new device" and so it wont come up again even after putting it in? Thanks

Hello everyone.
I have a problem with the wireless connection of my laptop. It disconnects about every 30 minutes and then it reconnects after a few seconds. This happens when I'm at one my my parent's houses but not at my friends house.
This problem is particularly annoying when I'm in the middle of an online game of Age of Empires III because you get kicked out instantly when you lose the connection for even one second.
I don't know much about modems or routers but if you need more details about them I could look for them.
Also I couldn't find anything on Google or the forums but please send me a link if you find anything.

All help appreciated!

A:Laptop wireless disconnects periodically (Sony VAIO)

Hi Nusaik,

That seems to be interference with nearby wireless networks or electronics. Also, depending on how far your laptop is from their wireless router.

Next time that you stop by at your parents home, ask their permission first if they will let you do a minor change in their router settings, if they won't let you, perhaps another option is a wired connection.

On your next visit, please Install and run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector.
Click on the 'Show Networks' to display all wireless networks on the xirrus icon on your desktop of if you have one running in a corner. Tap the Printscreen key on your keyboard, open up Paint then choose Edit from the Menu and select Paste, then SAVE it. Upload and attached it here, click on Go Advanced and locate Manage Attachments Tab and attached the file.

Need help solving a problem with my Sony Vaio model VGC-RA820G with Windows XP Media center. The unit has built in Media card reader and last week I transfered poster jpg pics from my email to a CF card no problems. All media slots were working and Explorer showed all the drive letters for the CF, SD, XD, & MS slots. Now I tried to use the slots and nothing happens when the media card is inserted. When I check the Device drivers for the "Sony Memory Card Reader/Writer I get this error message:

This device cannot start. (Code 10)

Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device. I have tried to uninstall and reinstall the device but it will neither uninstall nor work even after an uninstall it is still in the device drivers with a yellow flag.
