Thinpad P50, Samsung 950 pro and password security

Q: Thinpad P50, Samsung 950 pro and password security

Hello. I recently installed a Samsung 950 Pro in the P50.After some problems during the installation it seems to work fine, but.... The 950 pro supports AES Hardware encryption (Advanced Encryption Standard, Class0 SED).I also was able to use it with a normal SSD before. After I installed the 950 NVMe, the option for setting a harddrive Password inside the BIOS just vanished. am not able to set any harddrive passwort and thus use encryption. Every other PW seems to work fine...I would like to ask why that happened there and I hope that some of you may be able to help me with that. Thank you very much,Greetz

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

While 950 Pro presumably supports AES on hardware level (i.e. all data is encrypted prior being written on the flash chips), key management is still "to be supported by FW update" ( http://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/minisite/SSD/global/html/ssd950pro/specificatio... ) If you want to encrypt your 950Pro, use Bitlocker or other third-party encryption solution. There is a performance and SSD wear cost associated with that, but it's negligible for most applications.

I doubt there are any fixes and these are mostly observations, but here goes: 1. The other day, I had screen flashes for a couple hours in the middle of the day. I was battery for extended time, but not doing anything video intensive - taking notes with onenote in laptop mode. The screen would flash with random frequency, and made it almost unusuble, but then would stop for a few minutes and start again. It finally stopped, but i never found a cause. Hi,

Are you trying those keys on startup or on restart?  If you've only tried on startup,  try on restart - or on startup after a full shutdown (SHIFT + shut down).

You could also try the advanced startup options from within windows.

We had a problem changing the password and now cannot get into our system since we do not know our password. There doesn't seem to be any way to reboot and get the default settings back so that we can enter original password code so we can use our system. It seems like if someone forgets his password then there is no way to get into the system. Any ideas to reset the password on this SAMSUNG 1040 without waiting to call Samsung.

Hello, My Thinkpad Yoga (model year 2014-2015) gives sometimes a white screen by startup, or after a softclose (for example when turn over from laptop to tablet mode). When I open and close my screen after a couple of times the screen is ok and I can work with it. I called Lenovo support because I think it is something with the connector from the screen to the motherboard. The computer was 2 months out of warranty so they say that I could send it to support for a check, what will cost me a lot of money for only analyse the issue. So I asked for another solution. They asked me to reinstal Windows and al the drivers, because they think that it is a software issue. Because there is a lot of software on my computer, and I need him every day for my work, I didn't have time to do this directly (first make a backup and then reinstall al the software). So I bought a new Lenovo thinkpad Yoga 260, and installed al my software. Now my "old" Yoga, whit the white screen issue, is ready for reinstall the software. Today I reinstalled Windows 10, but the issue is still there "sometimes white screen". So I think again it is not a software issue but a issue whit the connector from the screen to the motherboard. My question is if someone has experience whit this issue, or maybe the same issue?

A:Solved: Dual Monitor on IBM Thinpad 770x

Dusty,

Do not confuse "external monitor" with "DUAL Monitor". The latter is what you apparently want. The former is what you have.

You can Google: Thinkpad 770 external monitor

and view item:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=PFAN-3PVSCN

which will confirm what you have with the 770.

Hi, Have you tried to update your WLAN driver? System Update is a good tool to detect drivers and helps you to update them:https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/ht080136 I would try that first and if it still has the problem, try to respond with: - Operativing system (x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit)) (See Control Panel -> System)- Product Number (P/N)

We have 600+ Dell Latitude laptops, with 170 of them being E7470 laptops, which support NVMe drives. On a few E7470's & we added a Samsung 1TB 960 Pro M.2 NVME drives to them for testing. I was able to load Windows 10 & everything is working as normal. However, in the Bios HDD password under security, & the option is not there so I can enable it.. The actual option in the bios --> Security --> "Internal HDD-1 Password" is missing. Since this & most SSD's have full disk encryption already enabled, putting this ATA password makes the drive encrypted compliant (the ata password gets stored in the non-volatile memory of the SSD & is encrypted). We have tried every option in the bios (setting admin/system password), changing to UEFI, AHCI, etc..I am running the latest version of the Dell bios. Running the latest firmware for the Samsung 960.When we put in another (non-NVMe drive) back into the E7470, the HD password option is there again. Dell is saying it is an issue with the Samsung 960 & that Dell supports ATA passwords on NVMe drives.Anyone else set HD passwordson this SSD; especially anyone with a Dell?Any ideas?Thx

Problems on initializing Samsung 80GB with Samsung's Disk Manager: Ontrack(tm)

Hi!

There is some problem on my 80gb Samsung HD. The situation is this:

I have had an old computer which have an ancient motherboard.. because of the limitations of motherboard it was initializing Hd as 8gb.. I installed Samsung's Disk Manager program named Ontrack. It does something with the MBR to make the 8gb initialized HD as 80gb! When you're in bios setup, it says your samsung is 8gb but when you reset and wait for the system disk error message Ontrack activates and then your hd is 80 gb, you can install OS after that.

Here is the problem: I bought a new computer whose motherboard to initialize my 80GB hd as 80GB also, but things didn't happen like that. On bios setup it says my HD is 33gb.

I plugged the HD to my other computer and its partition magic 8 says "33gb BAD" also..

A modified MBR by a program (ontrack) can fool bios setup? if so, can i use XP CDs system recovery console with fixmbr command? ?f it is not how can i make my hd back to normal (not for old motherboards, initialized as 80GB)??

New motherboard is MSI RS482M2-IL and because of this problem I cannot enable S.M.A.R.T. feature. I need help and thanks from now on!

So it means you tried advanced startup setting to enable installing of unsigned drivers?

Because for me SmartThru 4 installs fine, (all Win10 updates installed), but ->

* I can install universal print driver & scan driver

I need to mix up my passwords a lot more, but I already end up having to reset forgotten passwords on a near-daily basis.

I did Google up a few password managers, but many seem to require a smartphone or other mobile device, neither of which I have.

There is a discussion at www.sevenforums.com/system-security/179818-w-7-security.html about safe (strong) passwords but the thread is marked as solved. So I post my reply I wanted to give in a new thread here.
All these rules for composing safe passwords are rather bothersome. The whole problem of a safe password can be solved in an easier way than composing one yourself by sticking to a whole set of rules, then obtaining its safety rating with one of the many password testers and possibly having to compose a safer password if the first one was miserable. And one thing about those password testers. Very often different testers give different safety ratings for the same password. So then what? It's all a bit too much in practice.
An easier way is to get a password online (don't frown) from Gibson Research Corp at **Home of Gibson Research Corporation**. Click on "Services" when you have downloaded their site and have a look at the sub-sections referring to passwords. Read it. Everything is secure and it is a very reputable company. One of the sub-sections referring to passwords generates a unique password just once for you and never again. 64 Characters but you can take a string out of that and cut down the length. You can then always test it with one of the password testers, preferably 2 or 3 to see whether or not the safety ratings are the same. It is easy but do some work and read what Gibson is writing about this whole issue. There are also some videos you can... Read more

I'm sure that most of you have your computers fairly secure with Anti-Virus, Firewall, Anti-Keyloggers and everything else you can think of. One thing some might overlook is password security. Specifically the fact that without a password manager it's pretty difficult to store multiple passwords in your head that have the length and variability to be secure passwords.

Keep in mind that having one password for everything is a very bad idea. Once an intruder cracks that one password, he/she has access to everything. Another bad move that most people make is storing their passwords within their browser. This is very risky move. None of the browsers have enough password security to be able to protect your stored passwords.

The solution to both of these problems is a password manager with real security. It not only allows you to store all of your passwords in a safe place, but it also allows you to use passwords that aren't easy to remember yet are very secure.

There are many products on the market in this area, but here's a free solution I've come across.

KeePass Password Safe

KeePass is a free open source password manager, which helps you to manage your passwords in a secure way. You can put all your passwords in one database, which is locked with one master key or a key file. So you only have to remember one single master password or select the key file to unlock the whole database. The databases are encrypted using the best and most sec... Read more

Hi again,

A few days ago my mom and I recieved a message in our screen, right next to our virus-thingy and stuff. It said that it was recommended to use a password on our computer and if we didn't our computer might not be safe - or something like that. Don't remember what it said. But we did put a password in our computers now and we'd like to know how we can get it out of our systems. It's a password that you can use when someone else wants to login on their account but there's no need for us to do that 'cause we all have our own computers... So is there a possibility to get it out of our systems without doing a complete new installation?

Try doing a system restore to a point before you had this problem...

This may sound dumb but I am not techno savvy. I am tempted to use the "remember password" facility on my outlook/hotmail when I log in but do not know whether this is safe, i.e. will only go to automatic password on my pc and not anyone else's who may try to hack into it. Is it totally safe to use/bustproof?

A:Remember Password & security

I don't use Remember Password with anything. I don't have passwords saved anyplace but my 3 brain cells and wrote down and saved on my Rolodex Both places are hard to hack.

I am unable to finish this post due to a power outage at work that deleted most of the body of this post before I could finish it. I will try to give more details tomorrow but have to leave work now. In short my former supervisor (5150) is logging onto my computer after hours, into the administrator profile, and re-setting my password so that I cannot log into my profile. She is no longer a supervisor but evidently still has access to the administrator passwords and privileges. I think she is still remotely accessing my desktop as well. She sabotages my work, deletes files, reports and emails, etc. We use Windows XP Professional and are part of a large interdepartmental network (City of Los Angeles). Any suggestions about how I can keep her out of my computer? Any way I can prove what she is doing?

I'll be taking my computer to a repairman soon as it won't turn on and i was wondering if while he is fixing it will he be able to log on and see all my files if i have a login password that he doesn't know ? I have passwords, contact information and private files saved on there that i don't want the repairman to be able to view so if he will be able to how can i delete them without turning my computer on ?

A:Login Password Security

I'd assume they could access your files.

If the computer is not under warranty (which I guess it isn't if you are sending it to a repairman) you can take the hdd out and buy an external hdd enclosure or cable. You can have full access to your files then from another computer.

It's invaluable knowledge to have as the amount of times i've recovered files and reused old hard drives for extra storage. They are very cheap. You might want a grounding cable to be on the safe side when you open the case. If not, don't do it wearing socks on carpet or anything that would produce static electricity. Locating and removing the hdd requires no technical ability, just don't be rough with it, don't touch anything else and you are in business.

If you want to you just need to check the connection plug on the hdd to know which enclosure to buy.

My friend has been doing this trick for sometime now. Somehow he always finds my log in passwords for various websites. I've tried changing the passwords. First he did on his laptop, I thought he might have some software installed, but he did it on my computer too. One was windows XP and other was windows 7. He says it has something to do with recognising the keystrokes I push and this is the reason why bank websites have virtual keyboards for security. He is acting smart and still not showing me how he does it. If anyone knows how he does it, please help because: 1. I want to end his bragging
2. I want to ensure better security of my passwords in future.

In the Control Panel, look for a program that you don't recognize i.e. Refog. My guess is he manually installed a Keylogger. Delete if you're sure. Now password protect the computer or your account.

I recently purchased a Dell Latitude E6530. I use a Verizon hotspot for my internet connection. My wife also has a hotspot. At times I will use her hotspot depending on signal. When switching I have type in the security passcode to access the internet. Also switching back I have to retype the passcode. How do I save the password so I don't have to. My old laptop I didn't have to retype everytime I made the switch in hotspots.
thanks in advance.

A:Saving Security Password

I don't think there is a possibility to save two passwords on a single PC.

If anyone replies with the correct solution, that would be very helpful for me too.

Hey Folks,
For reasons of simplicity/portability I need to use a password manager for some on-line accounts. I'm looking at one called PINs

See PINs here

It's a great, free program; I'm just concerned about security of it.
It says it uses 448Bit Blowfish encryption, which is good.

But I worry about the vulnerability of the program itself.

Also, It's open source.

Any thoughts, opinions or experiences welcome!
Thanks

A:Security of this Password Manager?

The "current" version is from 2003! You had better find something that is actively being worked on. No security-related program can be so ready that one doesn't have to improve it in three years.

Hi ancawa,Welcome to the forums. Now that you have reset your computer and your password, what type of security do you have in mind? Just to clarify for other members who may want to help, are you referring to software such as anti-malware security, or general prevention tips for keeping your laptop secure? I do not know if anything else will be "wrong". If you have a problem and the laptop is under warranty you have the option of contacting Lenovo Tech Support or posting on these forums. Whether under warranty or not, you can always post your questions at the forums.

I am going to be using my laptop for an event in which I will have a volunteer working with an excel file. Is there any way to totally protect my computer (in case this person gets bored and starts looking through my files) but just allow him to work with this file? Don't get me wrong, there's nothing illegal or gross on there - its just personal files!!. I would like to lock the computer except for the one file if possible then take that protection off after next weekend. Thanks
