I have a spreadsheet that connects to a database.
When I open the spreadsheet, I got asked if I wanted to refresh the data. I did so, and clicked yes.
Some time later, after getting bored ticking 'yes' every time I opened the sheet I ticked the 'don't ask me again' button.
Now every time I open a sheet that pulls data from a remote data source, it automatically connects and updates the data - I no longer want this to happen!!!!! Any way I can switch this off as easily as I switched it on????

I currently use Excel 2007 and I am working on a template with a link to an Excel database file. For example, C:\China\Template.xlsx (File 1) has links to a file C:\China\Data.xlsx (File 2). When I open these files together, File 1 is updated with File 2 as it should be. But if I open a different database file C:\Brazil\Data.xlsx (File 3) first and then open C:\China\Template.xlsx (File 2), this file automatically links to the open File 3. It automatically links to the open database file because it has the same name? Even though the files are not from the same folder? I tested this on Excel 2003 (and has functioned correctly to where the template file only links to the correct database from a specific folder - even if other databases are named the same) and it didn't automatically redirect the links to the open a file even if the database files are named the same. I am not sure if there is a setting in Excel, but fiddling around with automatic updates does not change it. A big problem is that if the template file is saved it is saved with the redirected source file.

Could you please help me...I don't know how to fix the settings in Excel 2007.

I have a Inspiron 7567. After updating my graphic driver to ,A04, I have a persistent problem of seeing this screen when I wake the screen up from sleep or when I open up the screen.
So I installed the older graphic driver, version, A03, and the problem seems to go away. I also checked the Graphic Setting to make sure it is the current drive. However after an hour of use, my screen flickered, went black, and came back on with a blue tint. Then the same problem came back and I got the same screen again when I open the laptop or wake it up from sleep.
I check the Intel Graphic Setting and see the driver has changed from, A03 to ,A04 by itself. 
How do I change the driver back to and keep it there?

I assume you're running Windows 10?  If so, the updated driver is probably coming from Windows Update.  And although you can block driver updates via Windows Update, it's only possible on Windows 10 Pro (similar to how you can only defer upgrades to new Win10 releases on Pro).  If you're on Windows 10 Pro, open Group Policy Editor and go to Computer Configuration > Admin Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update, then set "Do not include drivers with Windows Updates" to Enabled.
If you don't have Windows 10 Pro, have you tried manually downloading the newest driver from support.dell.com to see if it will install properly (and without causing that error) if you do so manually?

I have a csv data file that I've downloaded which I want to do some reporting on, eventually turning it into a pivot report.

However, this source csv will change weekly when I download it (mostly appended, but possible data changes anywhere). When I have worked with a dynamic data source in the past, I've created a link to it through Excel's Get External Data options. If I link it to this CSV it just imports the data.

I would like to design an elegant solution where the source csv can be downloaded, then the reporting Excel file opened and linked to this newly downloaded csv, with the changes in data reflected in the report.

If I were doing it manually, I would copy the entire csv into tab1, format it as a table, change the table ID to something unique and then link the pivot reports to it, but this is an inelegant solution.

The fields in the CSV will remain constant, but the number of rows will increase each time. I'm using Excel 2010.

You can still do this, all you need to do is create a macro that reads the csv file into an existing sheet already in your reporting Excel file
You will have to agree for a file location where the csv file can be found and also a naming convention, if the fileds are always the same then all you need is macro that erases the data in the Excel sheet, not the sheet, and reads the new data into this same sheet, your macro collecting the data must just specify what the last row is and your report can be refreshed.
Import thing to keep in mind:
csv file location must be specified
csv filename must answer to specific conditions (naming convention)
All these things can me made dynamic, never hard code this so that your macro will become dynamic and little or no changes have to be coded before running it.

This is for Microsoft Office Pro 2007
I have a user that uses several Excel files which are linked together using formulas/pivot tables.
The formulas are written correctly.
The locations of the files are all together in one folder.
The problem lies in the fact that the user opens one of the files and they see errors where the cells should be linked to the other Excel files
Only when the person opens the other Excel files which are linked can the information get updated.
The data will not update automatically even though the option for Automatic Workbook Calculation is selected.
I have tried everything I could possibly think of as a help desk person to fix the problem.
I have even tried it on my computer doing all of the same troubleshooting as I did on the user's computer with no success.
We even created 2 Excel files with a lot less data in them and attempted to link the files together in the same way.
When opening the one file by itself it does not update automatically and again it only updates when both test Excel files are open.
Any ideas as to why this may not be working please let me know because I spent several days on this with the user.

Hi all,

For some unknown reason, when selecting source data for charts (new and existing), I cannot use CTRL to select more than 9 cells. As soon as I hit the tenth cell I get a system beep, and the cell selection bar empties. I used to be able to do this without a problem (for updating a thirteen month trend graph).

Can anyone help explain why this is so and how I might be able to rectify this?

Here's a complete guess -- although Help doesn't say anything about it, maybe there's a limit to how many characters you can have in the "cell selection bar" (255, possibly).

Try shortening the sheet name (?as a test?) ; or building it with 9, then drag'n'dropping the remaining 4 in turn (as new points).

I have WIN 7 Home Premium (service pack 1) 64-bit. I have several email addresses including gmail & hotmail and I use Windows Live Mail version 2012. I do not have Outlook.
I have been asked to do some email merging for a club I belong to. The data source is an Excel spread sheet with names and email addresses and other data. I have carefully studied what must be done and all goes well when I send emails to people who are listed in the contacts section of my WLM. But many of the members listed in the table are not in my contacts list so the Word mailmerge system stops when it gets to someone not listed. I am fairly sure this is the reason because I have experimented with an address in and not in my contacts list.
Should I export everyone from the Excel table to a csv file and then import it into my contacts list or does anyone know a better and neater way?

I have several *.csv files. Each file has two columns of data when viewed in Excel. I'm trying to write a macro that will put the second column of data in a line graph. The files are named "TEK00000.CSV, TEK00001.CSV, TEK00002.CSV, ..."

So I opened one file, started recording a macro, made the graph, and then stopped recording. The result was the autogenerated code below.

We've got a bar graph showing people's performance against a scale. What I want to do is sort the order that the data is shown on the graph, so the highest performer is on the left and the lowest on the right, but I don't want to sort the source data as there are other graphs linked to it. I hope this makes sense Does anyone know if this is possible? I guess what I'm asking is, is there a way to sort data on the graph without sorting the source data in the worksheet? Hello again, if I make a chart and look at the source data it might be something like "=Prices!$A$10:$A$100" and to change it takes a long time when there are several data series.

Is there a way to make cell A1 control the start point and cell A2 control the end point, so that X-axis is updated to include only the range of data within the start and end points.

Changing the above formula for the source data, I was thinking something like "=Prices!Offset($A$10,A1):Offset($A$10,A2)" but Excel doesn't like that, not one bit. And hopefully that demonstrates what I'm trying to do, probably better than my explanation.

Hi all,

I have a monthly report that has a certain column (always column BF) that contains the numbers 1-5, either singly or in any combination thereof. I have to copy this into 5 columns (BQ through BU) and I want those columns titled Q2 - 1, Q2 - 2, Q2 - 3, Q2 - 4 and Q2 - 5.
I need all the 1s in Q2 - 1, all the 2s in Q2 - 2 and so on.
Since the number of items in each cell varies, (there is no 1, , 3,4, , with blanks for non-existing numbers, rather one cell may have 2 and the one below it may have 1,3,5) is there a macro or a formula that would quickly copy every item into the right column?
It isn't vital, I suppose, I can copy, sort and cut and paste, but I would like to save the time....

Hi bparker - Not sure I'm reading your intent right, but if you can save the "19991118damlbmp_zone" etc sheets into a book on the desktop you name "Book11" and then open a new book called "Book10" and run the code from Book10 - you can use something like this:

Hello my fellow databasers.

The Information:
I am currently working for a company that is tracking their part(s)
expenses per each customer job.

All customers' expenses are entered into the same 'primary' workbook so entering information is easier than going to each customer workbook. The column headings are as follows.

Customer Name - Date - Part Used - Cost - Invoice # - Additional Notes

There is 1 primary workbook and then each customer has their own workbook.

I have researched for a week now and am not savvy enough with Excel to know exactly what I should search for. I believe a macro is what I want though.
The question:
How, or what would I do, to have each workbook search for its relative 'Customer Name' and paste (auto populate) the information into the workbooks?

ex. I entered a part for John Doe within Primary Workbook. The second workbook sees John Doe, copies the row of all parts that have John Doe in the first column and populates it in the second workbook.

Also, would I need to create a separate Vlookup first to add a value to my customers so it wasn't text based to help the above equation work?
I know I could copy and paste each one, but sometimes we retroactively change values of costs, and for the amount of time I could save by creating ... a macro? or some formula would be well worth continued research. Any help is appreciated.

A macro can do what you need but have you considered using filters on the primary workbook where you can select the customer name and only those records will be displayed? This will eliminate the need for multiple workbooks and make your life much simpler. An added benefit would be the ability to filter on other criteria like Date Or Part # so you can see across Customers what occurred on a specific date or which customers ordered a specific part.
Alternatively, this would be an ideal application for Access which would make data entry simpler and provide the information you need in the format you need.

I have placed a couple of user defined data collector sets on my machine to monitor remotely a number of other servers.
I left those data sets running for a round a month and I want to stop them now.
Every time I select any of those data sets and click the stop button, the stop button grays out, leave it for a considerable time, then refresh ... but nothing changed. the data set stays in running status.
I tried this with all the remote monitoring data sets, but non of them stopped.
The size of the data set is increasing uncontrollably and I have to stop them, but I don't want to delete what has been collected ...... How can I do that?

so I'm putting together this custom spreadsheet for my own little needs. let's say I have A1, B1 and C1 cells. in the C1 cell I want to display "1" if the numbers in A1 and B1 are equal and they are not equal then display nothing. so the formula I'm using is


and is there are any numbers in A1 and B1 excel interprets everything just fine. but if if there are no numbers yet, it takes two empty cells as having the similar data and still gives me "1" in C1 cell. so how do I make so that Excel does not execute the IF formula before I enter the numbers in A1 and B1. or is there another of of not getting the "result" before actually putting in the numbers?

I am an absolute begineer in MS Access. Will try to put my question as simply n clearly as possible.

I have designed a database to keep history of our company's projects. The 'Master Project History Table' contains fields including 'Project Ref', 'Project Title', 'Project Budget' and 'Project Year'. The users are expected to populate the table through 'Master Project HistoryForm'.

The key field is set as 'Project Ref'.

Some of the projects are combined with each other and to display this info, 'Master Project History Form' also has the fields 'Project Ref-1', 'Project Title-1', 'Project Budget-1' and 'Project Year-1'.

I am loking for a code for the ('On Update' event) that will fetch and display data in 'Project Title-1', 'Project Budget-1' and 'Project Year-1' fields when 'Project Ref-1' is updated. Please note that all this info is coming from the same 'Master Project History Table'.

My IT guys told me to use a code with variable for each field that goes something like this (to update Project Title-1 field):

This past Sunday (08.28) I allowed a technician remote control access to my computer.  The technician identified himself as a MS engineer.  I quickly realized that this was malware and severed internet access.  Also, I suspect that I may have other malware as I've never gotten a clean scan log from MBAM.

I have created a form in Word using text fields. I would like the fields to automatically update, for instance, when I type the persons name in, I would like their name to appear in two other places without having to right click and 'update field' each time. Is there a way to do this?

I recently was infected with a nasty bug and was helped through it by Sempai (thanks again!). He's going on vacation, so is unable to help me, and suggested I start a new topic.

At the time I was infected, I had Avast as my only protection. Upon suspicion that my computer was infected, I checked the version of Avast and found out that it had not been updated in several months, despite having checked the "Auto Update" box.

After Semp helped me with my infection, I got rid of Avast, and installed Online Armor, Sandboxie, Avira AntiVir, and MalwareByte's Anti-Malware. It's come to my attention, though, that AntiVir and MBAM are also not automatically updating as they should. I will usually get a Windows balloon telling me my AV program might be outdated, and sure enough, it is. MBAM has given me a warning balloon about an update being available only once in the few weeks I've had it, despite the fact that I've asked it to download updates automatically.

Before one automatically suggests it might be Online Armor's doing, remember that I had the same problem with Avast before OA was ever even installed.

I'm running Windows XP, which, as far as I know, updates iteself just fine, since on occasion when I shut down I will get the message that updates are being installed and it will shut down when done. These other programs, however, have me stumped. Thanks in advance!

Ok, I have a TOC created and the page numbers update automatically depending where the various headings are placed. My question now is this:

Is there a way to alter the default page numbering and have that custom page numbering be reflected in the TOC?

For example:
Here is an example of how the TOC is currently laid out:

ARTICLE I FUNDING.................................................3
Section 1.1 AoP........................................................3

The problem here is that these items are actually on page 2. In effect, the table of contents is page 0 with normal numbering commencing thereafter (1, 2, 3 etc.)

In page setup; (File > Page setup) in the layout tab, there should be an option to make first page different. Does this fix the problem?

Have you installed some programs before that appeared ? It might be part of that one, a lot of programs install parts of them in default place Documents and Settings. It should show in Users folder too.

For some reason, I've been unable to turn on Automatic Updates in Windows Vista. Whenever I do, I get an error message that Windows cannot change it.

So I click the "Change settings manually option", but this error dialog comes up.

I'm not really sure what's going on. I've tried searching it on Google, but found nothing really relevant to my issue. I can't even update Microsoft Security Essentials properly because of this.

I was looking for some software that would save my files and folders and update whenever I added to them (my Seagate external drive just won't play ball). Somebody told me about Dropbox and said it would store computer files and folders of my choice and that they would be updated as and when any changes were made. However that doesn't seem to be happening. The only folders that update even a little bit are photos from my iPhone. Other documents from my PC remain static and I have to update them manually.

I admit I don't really know what syncing is but since these folders and Dropbox are both on my desktop computer is syncing really necessary? Can someone advise me please? Or offer an alternative that is simple to use but that doesn't take up too much memory on my PC?

I just don't understand Cloud, Dropbox and others of a like nature.

I recently found out that there was SP2 for Vista, I do use Vista on my other computer sometimes, but it says it has SP1 and never had any automatic update for SP2. Is there something wrong with my system that is causing it to miss updates? I am getting other automatic updates like IE8 and stuff.

If I get SP2 will it effect my gaming?

How do I set Windows Defender to update automatically? There doesn't appear to be any settings within the programme, although I could have sworn that I clicked automatic once upon a time. Any how, every now and then I get a pop up message from the tray asking me to update it. I would rather it just updated itself and left me alone.

Skydrive/Onedrive does not update my files automatically and when I right-click the SkyDrive icon in the notification area, at the far right of the taskbar, and then click "View sync problems", it appears "grey", so I cannot access to this option. I saw this question/problem all over the internet, in forums, on Microsoft's web sites, etc. I NEVER found a solution working for me. I have this problem since I installed SkyDrive/OneDrive. Hi all, need your help here. I have used avast for several yrs on my xp laptop and it always automatically updates once, sometimes twice, a day. I now have a brand new laptop with pre-installed windows 7. Absolutely no probs whatsoever and loving W7. But since Thursday when i bought laptop and immediately installed avast it is no longer automatically updating itself. I have Home Premium 64-bit; is there some kind of known problem or does it need updating less on 64-bit/ I would hardly think so.

Since Thursday I have manually updated avast and it insists 'program is up to date etc' but today i manually updated and it did update to release date 13/3/2010. But it should not need manual intervention on my part.

My update settings are set as default: automatic update and my proxy settings are also default: Auto detect (use Internet Explorer settings) although I use Firefox. I have just noticed the Update Options menu and this is set to auto-update every 240 mins.

Can anyone help or enlighten me. Thanks as always for your help folks.

Help! As stated in the topic title we are getting lots of pop-ups when trying to browse the Internet. I tried running MalwareBytes but it automatically closes when trying to update. I tried running the MalwaeBytes in normal Windows mode and Safemode with Networking as well... same problem with both.

I have an HP Pavillion a1640n and XP SP3. After trying to deal with a malware problems (Antivirus System Pro) using Anti-malware by Malwarebytes, I have been unable to get XP to fully load.

1) I repeatedly received a stop error 0x0000008E after the "login" phase of the process (sometimes after all of my desktop icons appear and various app icons start to appear in bottom right, sometimes before that). The computer locks up in the blue screen, and only shuts down if I pull the plug.

2) The computer works in Safemode, so I rescanned with Anti-malware, and found only one threat: Rootkit.agent. After attempting to remove, I am told that it is removed. But when I rescan, it is there again.

I continue to receive the 8E stop error if I try to reboot in normal mode.

3) I tried pulling the RAM cards one by one, but to no avail.

I read on the site that it would be useful to read the memory dump (and I located the .dmp files), but when I try to install Windows debugging tools, I am told something like "administrator will not allow" me to do that. It's my home computer, so I am the adminstrator. I logged on as "administrator" and via my regular user settings and receive the same message.

So I'm kind of stuck. Any help would be appreciated.

I have a new HP 6200 small form factor that came pre-installed with Windows 7 64bit. I installed our corporate copy of MS Office Pro 2003 and then installed UPS Worldship 2011, which requires an ODBC to connect to our Access database.

When I go into the ODBC to set up the connection under System DSN, it's completely blank. No Access DSN, no Excel DSN, completely blank. If I try to ADD a DSN the only options shown are SQL DSNs which I can not use.

Initially, I called UPS Worldship Support. They referred me to Microsoft. After nearly 2 hrs on the phone with MS, they told me to call HP since HP preinstalled the Windows 7 and they handle any software/warranty issues.

So, I called HP. Their support is the pits. Nobody I talked with even knew what a DSN is (they kept telling me it was DNS not DSN and they are 2 different things!!). Then, they suggested I call Microsoft and PAY to have them help me.

This is a brand new PC and it's a Windows 7 issue, not Worldship, not hardware, yet I can get any help.

I've tried some of the options on the various forum (running the 32 bit.exe, copying files, etc) and nothing has worked.

Anyone have any ideas HOW I can get the Access and Excel DSNs in the ODBC Manager? I need help asap as this is a critical PC to our shipping area. Without it, we are unable to ship via UPS and losing $$$.

Thanks for any suggestions because I'm fed up with Microsoft AND HP!!!

After running SpyBot, an entry has came up for "Data Source Object Exploit". After some searching, I've found that an MS Security Update does in fact have a fix for this (strangely enough though, my win update shows this fix installed on the day it was released, as does the "About Internet Explorer" option under Help menu).

Anyhow, thought I'd give it another try. Followed instructions on MS update site, Security Update, March 28, 2002, and after downloading file (Q319182.exe), a splash screen (Security Warning) comes up, asking if I want to install and run the update. When I select yes, a window comes up informing me that "This update requires Internet Explorer 6.0 to be installed.".

I am currently running IE 6.0.2600.0000.blah.blah.blah.

Repeated attempts to install this update bring up the same message.

Does anyone have any suggestions on a remedy?

ok i have a workbook with 100 sheets, have a macro with the code below, the object of my bosses boss, i don't write code on pc's so bear with me hear, is to fill trhese sheets with data queried from an as/400, it grabs the data but on each change of sheets i get asked for the data source and have to click it and then ok - any way around this???
