Microsoft provides privacy dashboard ahead of Windows 10 launch

Q: Microsoft provides privacy dashboard ahead of Windows 10 launch

Microsoft gave its privacy policy and service agreement a facelift Thursday, and offered users a new central clearinghouse to manage privacy settings for all the data the company keeps about them.

The newly-minted privacy dashboard (included in the Security and Privacy section of Microsoft?s account administration page) gives users links to control data stored for personalizing their experience on Bing, what apps and services use their information, whether Microsoft personalizes ads for them and whether the company can market to them via email. It?s part of a move by the company to unify and simplify most of its service agreements and privacy policies for various products under one document.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Got tired of waiting and bought 4690k months ago. Giving todays exchange rate, paid exactly $230+VAT. Probably saved some on DDR3 vs DDR4, maybe s1151 MOBOs will be also more expensive on release, while You can buy s1150 on sales and specials. What I don't get is the sentence: 'If so, what CPU are you upgrading from or are you building an entirely new PC from scratch?'? It's not like You can upgrade just Skylake, have to basically build a new PC: CPU, MOBO, RAM. If You play building your PC, rest is usually left over from previous builds.

It's only been four days since the Windows 10 Technical Preview was released to the public, however that doesn't mean the build that was issued with the Technical Preview is new. Windows 10 build 9841 was compiled on September 12, which was around three weeks ago. That's ancient in development time, so it's no surprise that build 9855 was recently compiled.

Thanks to the "preview builds" ability (which doesn't currently work) in the Windows 10 Technical Preview, users who are using the Technical Preview have managed to see some more recent builds of Windows 10. According to logs that appear when the operating system is attempting to connect to the update server, the operating system is seeing builds as new as a few days ago. Build 9855 was compiled on October 2nd, just two days ago.

I did find this:http://www.ahitagni.com/?p=530

I don't want this and other information being sent to Microsoft (or anyone else).

Microsoft temporarily suspends Windows 10 preview build availability ahead of RTM

The Windows 10 RTM (release to manufacturing) milestone is close at hand.

On July 13, Microsoft temporarily suspended availability of Windows 10 for PC preview builds in preparation for the upgrade process, which commences July 29.

"Windows Insiders have been the first to see our work on Windows 10 at every stage. Now you will also be the first to get a build flighted to you using the channels that we'll use for targeting and deploying to PCs for our staged rollout," said Gabe Aul, head of the Windows 10 Insider program in a July 13 update to a previous blog post.

More from Aul:"We're suspending the availability of Windows 10 builds briefly while we prepare for that (rollout), and the next build that we flight to you will be delivered using the production channels. Starting tomorrow (July 14), we will also not be delivering any additional ISOs at this point as we really need Insiders to be using, stressing, and validating our distribution and upgrade processes. We'll make ISOs available again in the future, but for now we ask you to upgrade your current build via Windows Update once the next build is released."

We are happy to announce the new Monetize -> In-app ads section in Windows Dev Center. This is your one stop shop to create and manage the ad mediation settings of your UWP and Windows 8.x ad units.

You can find the In-app ads section under the Monetize section in the left navigation. On choosing this option, you can view your in-app ads dashboard that lists all your ad units, along with additional details such as application name, ad unit type, mediation settings, etc.

On clicking the ?Create ad unit? button, you will be taken to a new page where you can specify the ad unit details, configure the ad mediation settings for the ad unit and submit. The ad unit will then appear on your in-app ads dashboard.

Do note that you no longer need to start a submission to be able to create an ad unit ? simply reserve your app name and you will be able to create an ad unit for it.

If you wish to change the mediation settings of an existing ad unit, simply click on the ad unit, change the settings and save.

For more information on these new experiences, please refer to this article.

We hope you enjoy the new experience! Please send your feedback to [email protected]

Right now I am not using a Microsoft account to login to Windows 8. But I do like the idea of being able to login with one, and have settings like my browser bookmarks and history, along with other settings synced.

My question is - does anyone know how secure the Windows 8 technology is when transferring all these settings back and forth over the internet to Microsoft servers? Is it using an SSL encrypted connection? Any information about this would be good to know.

I like the idea of being able to access some of this common info from computer to computer, but not unless there is really tight security in place.

10 out of 70 of the W7 x64 Pro NVR recorders I am maintaining keep setting their time to 1 hour ahead. I have set this to sync internet time with time.nist.gov and have set it to manual time as well. They were all initially set to sync time with
time.nist.gov and they all went to the wrong time sometime Wednesday night. I set one to manual time on some last and it still jumps 1 hour ahead.

This is a major problem as it stops people from viewing footage as the recorder is 1 hour ahead of the viewing platform so it cannot view current footage.

They are all set to the correct time zone. I rarely have to reset the time normally usually 1 or 2  machines per month.

Our journey this year begins with maintaining our investments on visual accessibility features as well as diversifying our efforts across new and improved accessibility experiences coming in the next update of Windows 10. Many of these new features are available to preview in the Insider builds today.

These include, easier to navigate new Ease of Access Settings; continued improvements for Narrator usability and eye control navigation; added features for improved reading and writing outcomes; and collaborating with assistive technology partners to support emerging Windows 10 experiences and bring more assistive technology related apps to the Store.

New Ease of Access Settings
As we have been improving and adding accessibility features to Windows, we recognized the opportunity to make our Ease of Access Settings easier to discover, learn and use.

Easier to Discover: We brought a lot of accessibility settings across Windows directly into Ease of Access, grouping features by ability (vision, hearing and interaction) and listing the most frequently used first. Customers can easily find the settings they care about, especially because anyone can now ask Cortana to find a setting and activate it. Some of the new settings to Ease of Access Settings include the following:
The ability to ?make everything bigger? or ?make everything brighter? on a new Display page in the Vision group
An audio page in the Hearing group

Microsoft has already announced a ton of exciting stuff this week, but the company isn't done yet. Today, it announced that the next version of its fully-featured Office suite of desktop PC applications will be called Office 2016.

Microsoft has been testing the new version of Office internally with a handful of its key partners. Images that leaked last year suggest the new release won't rock the boat too much in terms of design, although customers can expect to see a range of new features and improvements.

The company said today that it "will have more to share on Office 2016 in the coming months", confirming its earlier promise of releasing the new applications "in the second half of 2015" ? perhaps coinciding with the launch of Windows 10, which is expected around the same time.

Although Microsoft did not publicly show its new Office 2016 desktop applications this week, it did unveil its new suite of touch-friendly Office apps for Windows. As with the touch-optimized Office apps on Android and iOS, they lack the complete feature set of the desktop applications, but they still offer many of the features that users need most often for creating, editing and sharing documents.

As Universal Windows apps, they'll be available not just on Windows 10 PCs, notebooks, and tablets, but also on smartphones. Microsoft shared a few images of the Office touch apps for Windows 10 today, showing how they'll look on handsets and devices with l... Read more

Windows 10 Redstone 2 (also known as Creators Update) is not here just yet, but Microsoft is thinking in advance, so it?s already working on some changes that are supposed to see daylight in the next-next update, namely Redstone 3.

One of them is what?s being called Project NEON, a new design language that Microsoft has been working on behind closed doors for nearly one year and which the company hopes would bring more consistency in its operating system.

Citing unnamed sources, WindowsCentral writes that the purpose of this new design language is to bring together all Windows 10 devices, including not only PCs, tablets, and smartphones, but also the HoloLens.

Project NEON would be specifically focused on HoloLens and on 3D features, as Microsoft is now investing aggressively in 3D and the upcoming Creators Update is the first step towards this new approach.

All-in on consistency
The goal with Project NEON is to address the inconsistencies in the operating system and Microsoft is working on a set of guidelines for app developers that would help them take advantage of this new push. Most likely, Redmond itself will update its apps to embrace NEON starting next year, soon after the debut of Windows 10 Redstone 2.

Design inconsistency has been quite a problem in Windows 10, and this is how we ended up having several designs for context menus across the operating systems, apps with hamburger menus or not, and other approaches that do not align with the rest of the OS.

In a detailed blog post this week, the team developing Microsoft's new Windows 10 web browser detailed some of the security improvements it will usher in with the launch of Microsoft Edge.

In its antitrust arguments, Microsoft insisted that Internet Explorer was "integrated" into Windows as a core feature that couldn't be removed. They lost that argument decisively, which led, indirectly, to the EU's "browser choice screen." A variant of that argument resulted in bizarre products like the K and KN versions of Windows. Those SKUs, which had Windows Media Player removed, were produced at great cost by Microsoft, and as far as I can tell they were never purchased by an actual customer.

But one small subhead, buried in the middle of the post, leaped out at me and inspired flashbacks to the contentious U.S. v. Microsoft antitrust trial of the late 1990s.

Hello Windows Insiders!

Today we are releasing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 16353 for PC to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring who have opted in to Skip Ahead only. As we mentioned in last week, Insiders who joined Skip Ahead will continue to receive builds from the RS_PRERELEASE branch which has transitioned to RS4 which is the release that will come after the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update (RS3). Insiders will notice that the build numbers have jumped ahead to 1635x. Previously, we jumped ahead with build numbers at the beginning of development for RS3. Because we are just beginning development for RS4, Insiders shouldn?t expect to see a lot of big changes or new features just yet. Our focus remains getting the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update ready for release!

More on Skip Ahead
We have had some Insiders ask us some questions about Skip Ahead and to clarify what it is. Back in July, we announced Windows Insiders in the Fast ring could opt-in and ?skip ahead? to builds that would be part of the next feature update for Windows 10. There was a limit on how many Insiders in the Fast ring we would allow to skip ahead and that limit had been reached several weeks ago. Insiders can no longer opt-in their PCs to Skip Ahead.

Up until last week, we had been releasing identical builds to Insiders who didn?t opt in to Skip Ahead and to those who did. As of today, the builds are no longer the same as mentioned above.

Today, we are releasing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 17618 (RS5) to Windows Insiders who have opted into Skip Ahead.

What?s new in Build 17618
Sets: Sets is designed to make sure that everything related to your task: relevant webpages, research documents, necessary files, and applications, is connected and available to you in one click. Starting today in RS5 builds, we have turned the Sets experiment back on so any Insider who has opted into Skip Ahead will be able to try out Sets. With Sets, 1st party experiences like Mail, Calendar, OneNote, MSN News, Windows and Microsoft Edge become more integrated to create a seamless experience, so you can get back to what?s important and be productive, recapturing that moment, saving time ? we believe that?s the true value of Sets. Additional app integration with Sets is expected over time.

If you are an Insider who was testing out Sets previously, you?ll find the following improvements to the experience:
Support for desktop (Win32) apps. Sets now supports File Explorer, Notepad, Command Prompt, and PowerShell. One of the top feature requests by Insiders has been tabs for File Explorer and with Sets you can get a tabbed File Explorer experience! Try it out with these apps and let us know what you think!
You can now launch apps from the new tab page by typing the app name into the search box.
UWP apps are launched in the same window replacing the new tab page.
The tab UI in Sets now shows i... Read more

Hello Windows Insiders!

Today we are releasing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 17004 for PC to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring who have opted in to Skip Ahead only. Insiders who joined Skip Ahead will continue to receive builds from the RS_PRERELEASE branch which has transitioned to RS4 which is the release that will come after the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update (RS3). Because we are just beginning development for RS4, Insiders shouldn?t expect to see a lot of big changes or new features just yet. Our focus remains getting the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update ready for release!

Insiders will notice that the build numbers have jumped ahead again but this time to 17xxx. This is what we do normally at the beginning of development of a new feature update for Windows 10.

Also ? you may notice that the Windows Insider Preview branding has disappeared from the build (shown via the desktop watermark at the lower right hand corner). This should be back with the next build.

What?s new in Build 17004
Fluent Design: As we progress into the next feature update, you?ll begin to see more and more elements of Fluent Design light up. We love the enthusiasm we?ve seen for Fluent Design, and with today?s build you?ll notice that Reveal is now visible on Start in All apps.

Microsoft Edge Improvements:

Hello forum members, it's been awhile since I last posted anything. I've been busy testing and working with Windows 10. While the OS has improved I find that there are still numerous bugs to work out, even on the stable Anniversary Update build.

My problem today deals with one of the store apps, namely the Microsoft Solitaire Collection. The game was working fine for a long time, granted I only played it every so often, and then a few days ago I tried running it and it just closes and exits from the memory. Task manager shows that it does indeed crap out and close. If anyone knows why please inform me.

Now I figure it would be helpful to post some more detailed information about this issue. Yes I have googled the crap out of this problem before coming here. I chose to ask here because the Microsoft Answers site is a complete joke.

I think the problem started when I was trying to fix Cortana. Cortana I noticed no longer does web searches and the notebook settings tab is no longer there, so I tried to fix it. At one point I had her working again(not sure how I did it though) but then that's exactly when Solitaire stopped working correctly. I kept messing with the Windows Apps directory and the permissions on that folder because I am almost certain that the problem lies in access rights to the apps. Sadly my attempts to correct both of the issues resulted in the start menu and notifications center no longer flying out. So in that case I used system restore to take me back ab... Read more

Hello Britton,

If you haven't already, you might see if resetting the Microsoft Solitaire Collection app may be able to help.

In the worse case situation, you should be able to do a repair install to fix both apps without losing anything, and avoid a fresh install.

I have a Sitefinity 7.0 project I am developing that has been working fine until a few weeks ago. After a round of Windows updates I would get a 500 error everytime I tried to access the Dashboard or any other backend page. The login worked, but the desired
page always failed, whether running in VS2013 or published and run from IIS 7. The production site hosted on WS2008R2 remained trouble free, but the issues affects development on my Windows 8.1 box.

I confirmed the error was caused by Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5.1 and 4.5.2 on Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2 x64-based Systems (KB3098779). Removing the update resolved the issue. Once a week, every week since, the update is
reinstalled automatically without me being able to stop it. The error reappears every time this update is automatically reinstalled.

I have Windows 7 and the latest version of Windows Media Player. When I drag the slider to any point of a large, high quality video file, it takes a long time for the video to play at that spot. I understand that it may take a second or two because of the video quality but it may take up to a minute or more. Keep it mind that these are files on my laptop, not a stream or anything connected to the internet.

I have an AMD Athlon Neo x2 Dual Core Processor on a HP dm3z laptop if that helps. The card isn't really top of the line but I don't think it should take this long to skip through videos, regardless.

Is there a way to tweak the settings or have any necessary codecs to avoid these long waits?
