Lost My Document > My Pictures 'link'

Q: Lost My Document > My Pictures 'link'

Greetings,

Under 'My Ducuments' folder (pointing to C:\USers\myusername\My Ducuments), I think the default setup is to have links to 'My Music', 'My Videos', and 'My Pictures'. Somohow I've deleted or lost the link to 'My Pictures' (but I have the video and music links). How do I restore the 'My Pictures' link within My Documents?

At first, I thought just crating a shortcut to my picture location (C:\Users\myusername\My Pictures) would restore this, but the original link is not a shortcut but a full fledged 'File Folder' (as described in Explorer) but with a little arrow in the folder icon suggesting it's a link/shortcut (?). So How to I recreate this 'My Pictures' File Folder that is really a link?

Thanks.

Preferred Solution: Lost My Document > My Pictures 'link'

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The weirdest thing happened. I'd tried to install the Verizon DSL software but was having problems. After speaking with Tech Support(?) they remoted into my Desktop to see what I meant. Immediately after that I've lost all the files in My Documents, My Pictures, all my bookmarks and preferences for Opera, etc. I don't believe they've been deleted, just lost. I found these two entries into the registry through Spybot S&D:

8/27/2006 4:51:27 PM Allowed value "RemVZDSLFolders" (new data: "C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd /c rmdir /q /s """) added in System Startup user entry!

8/27/2006 4:51:31 PM Allowed value "RemVZDSLFiles" (new data: "C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd /c del /f /q /s """) added in System Startup global entry!

Now I can't even find C:\\WINDOWS\system32\cmd?? What happened? Can I recover??

Any help would be appreciated.

This is the best way and it is something that has probably happed in the past so they will know how to fix it, if you are unsuccessful with whatever agent you get ask for a supervisor and have them have a higher tech acall you back

Was having problems with virtual memory and computer coming to a complete stop due to downloading a Norton upgrade. My computer tech suggested backing up everything on my computer and reloading Windows XP Home Edition. He backed up what he thought was everything on my computer that was under my user name and reloaded my computer but my pictures in my Kodak pictures file were not under my user name; therefore, all of my pictures are gone. The tech has now transferred everything on my computer over to his computer and is now trying to find the pictures. Anyone have any suggestions on how to retrieve the pictures? Has anyone ever had to send the computer to a lab to get info retrieved and how much does it cost? Thanks for your help!

I worked most of today in Word on a critical document, saving the file every 10 minutes or so. I put the machine in hibernate and when I opened it back up to do more work, the file was not in the Word recent file list.

Did a search (from the Start icon) and the file, with the proper date and time showed up as a link (a magnifying glass with the shortcut arrow in the lower left). I cannot find a way to have the link icon open the file that I saved.

Is there anyway to retrieve a file that the OS knows was there, but appears to have lost the linkage?

A:Search link has lost the file it should link to

Welcome to the Seven Forums!

Maybe you have already tried this, but open the Windows (File) Explorer and manually look around for the file that way. When you first open the Windows (File) Explorer, you should see the Documents library - look around in there.

I was on my phone, reading an article from a respectable news outlet, when I came across an ad tempting me toward a seedier corner of the web. It featured a photograph of an anonymous woman leaning over the bathroom sink, her head cut out of the frame, backside front and center, iPhone gleaming on the counter nearby. ?Husband Divorced His Wife After Looking Closer at This Photo,? the headline read.
I squinted. Was this some kind of ? butt-related mystery? I clicked the link. Soon I was mired in a distended slide show, crammed with photos of random women and bloated with distracting doodads, including a decoy ?Next? button that misdirected me to an advertorial for a supplement claiming to cure erectile dysfunction with a blend of ingredients like ?horny goat? and ?potency wood.? When I finally arrived at the slide show?s terminal page, the promised divorce-inducing photograph appeared: It was a decade-old viral photo, one that had been debunked by Snopes.

I went on that ride courtesy of one of the internet?s many ?content discovery solutions.? These companies occupy real estate at the margins of websites like CNN, Politico and TMZ, and fill them with links to content landfills with names like Buzz-Hut, CollegeFreakz, Dogsome and TimezOff. The links are often ads for stuff like bedsheets and dental implants that are disguised as news articles ? or else barrel-scraping clickbait that tempts the reader toward still more ads ? and because the thumb... In Office 2007, go into the Word doc where you want the image, put your cursor exactly where you want the image placed, go to the Ribbon, open Insert, and select Picture. This opens Windows Explorer; browse to the image you want to insert, and double-click it. That inserts the image into the document.

Then, right-click the image and select: Text Wrapping, and select Square. Or, there are other options for different kinds of text wrapping, but essentially, that's all there is to it.

I am doing genealogy for my family. I use Word 2000 to record my family group sheet

I don't know what it's called but I'd like to be able to click on someones name and have it bring me to the place where I have that person's information. I've believe I've seen that capability in some documents.

For example, I have my parents family group sheet in which I am listed as their son.
Then on another page is my familys group sheet
So I'd like to be able to click on my name Lawrence (which I expect would be in blue underline font) in my parents family group sheet and be brought to my name Lawrence (I don't know whether or not would be in blue underline font) in my family group sheet

How do I do that?

Hey Folks.

This is annoying the hell out of me so I thought I'd ask.

On the start menu you have the "Documents" link under the user name. Mine takes me to library link to My Documents but it won't keep the icons the right size. If I go via the start menu Document link then into My Pictures it keeps the icon sizes as medium. I prefer large icon sizes for My Pictures but if I change it and back up all my icons are then large size.

So, can I change the document link on the start menu from a library to a straight link to a folder where I keep my documents? Or delete it and add my own link instead?

It's just really annoying me now and I'm probably going to format my PC again tonight.

Ta for any help.

No problem...

Right click on the Windows Orb on the taskbar...
Then select Properties from the menu...
On the dialog's "start menu tab" click "Customize"...
Set it up as you need it.

For the icon size thing... If you set the icon size and/or display properties in a given folder and then close it, it will write a hidden file in that folder and remember your settings. The next time you come to that folder it should show up as you're used to.

Hi,

I want to put links in my text, for use on the same machine or mobile media (CDs or floppies).
I'm using Notepad a lot, but this cant be done in Notepad. I am thinking of putting the address line into notepad, so that this can be copy-pasted into RUN
as a crude form of link, but i am hoping that RTF or Wordpad has the facility to insert a link but i have not been able to find info on this.

Apparently i can insert an 'object' in RTF, but that doesnt seem to be the same thing.

The links i want to insert would be mainly for pictures, and would probably take the form of ... "you can see a picture of this HERE" ... or maybe "to see a pic of this click on this link: C/Picture/item.jpg"

I feel this is a fairly simple action, which might be why i cannot find any info on how to do it.

Cheers, John

Hi MaverickGosse, welcome to TSF...

hate to be the bearer of bad news but it's unlikely you'll be able to get back the file as it has been overwritten. But feel free to try some recovery programs...I can recommend Runtime's GetDataBack as it can be used on USB devices and it has worked for me in the past though the files were simply deleted in my case and not overwritten.

She went out, and when she came back the PC was off. she turned it on and opened the file, and it was if she had simply stopped savingabout "11:22am" (i looked in the properties), although she had been working well past 1pm. As a result she has lost a fair amount of work.
She told me she was mostly saving onto my USB Storage Device - although she had saved more than is there onto the hard drive aswel.

Any suggestions? I looked at the possibiliy of the "windows restore to a previous time" but thats only an option for 8am.

Look for any temp files created in that timeframe. If word crashed (or the computer shut down without Word closing, the temporary file should be there.

System restore could not help anyway, it does not restore user created data only Windows Syetem files (hence the System in the name). Many seem unaware of this.

A file page has two parts the 1st is the Browser Icon with just the file name (I call the controller)followed by ".htm". The second part is a folder Icon also with the file name followed by "_files". I normally always "Sleep" my computer when leaving it, but a week or so ago, being tired, I clicked on "shut down" accidentally. When I started my computer the next day all that came up was a screen I've never seen before - a light blue wall paper with birds on it on the right hand side. After trying again and again I finally got into repair mode -"NONE of your files will be affected"!!! All seemed OK after the system finally started - but now I am finding random files missing the "1st part" the "controller" the line with the browser Icon & file name with ".htm" after it. All there is - is the Folder Icon with the file name followed by "_files" that only contains Gobbeldy-Gook stuff and therefore the file (web page) that I had saved - is gone - not available to me. I know that this information is still on my computer, but I don't know what it is called (the missing "controller") much less how to find or restore them. Strangely, my Clickfree backup doesn't even show the folders that these files were in (thought I would just "restore" them but... Read more

Could you please break up your future posts using paragraphs.
This one is hard to read.

You tried to save a web page and then some (possibly unrelated) problem occurred and the saved files have vanished, is that correct?

There are programs which can attempt to recover deleted files.
I'm not sure that they'll work in this case.
The more new files you save and the more programs you install, the smaller your chances are, of recovering a deleted file.
The HDD space may be overwritten (it definitely will be overwritten eventually).

You could try "Recuva".
Recuva - Undelete, Unerase, File and Disk Recovery - Free Download

You should use a friend's PC to download the portable version.

In a bit of trouble, I have been working on a piece of work for about a week, was just about to pick up where I left off, and it has reverted to the bare-bones version that I had a couple of weeks ago.

I'm using Windows 7, and Word 2010.

I created a document with basically a title a couple of weeks ago, then last week I started doing a lot of work on it. On Friday, I left it until today, and I am back to the version I had 2 weeks ago (in two documents, one for planning, one for the writing up). If I could get just one of the documents back it would be amazing.

Basically, the only thing I can think of that has done this, is my external hard-drive. Each week I back up my folder of work, containing different sub-folders etc... maybe I just did it this week without thinking in reverse, and replaced my current set of documents with last weeks? The thing that makes me think this is not the case, is that one of my other documents, in the same overall folder, but a different sub-folder, was "last-edited" in the middle of last week. Unfortunately I didn't use any other documents last week to check if this is the same.

I don't have my external hard-drive with me during the week, but later this evening I should be able to get somebody to have a look if it is on there for me. I'm not holding out much hope though

Anybody have any similar experiences or potential solutions. Really dreading starting from scratch.

After finishing my work on wordpad, I went so save my work, I saved it under a different file name to the one i was saving with originally. After it was saved I opened that document was up, it came up my work which was saved on the other document. The strange thing is, is that it has parts that were in the new version, even though the one I was seeing was the old version.I have searched the whole computer to see if it was perhaps somewhere else.I had also tried to attach the file and send it to a friend so that they could print it off for me, and it failed. I dont know why. A friend of mine suggested that it might still be in the outbox as I could not send the email either.Any suggestions on what to do?I need to submit this work by 11:30 on thursday GMT.THanks for any help.Moderator Edit: Moved topic to more appropriate forum. ~ AnimalOps, sorry, not thinking straight.

I would do a search using the DATE/TIME format. If you have the original file, search using that date (if both are on the same date), and you may find your file. You may need to manually open each file to verify it's the one because it's possible you could have saved the file under a different extension.Have you tried looking in your inbox?

I hope I can explain this adequately. I use a website (Ancestry.com) from which you can save an image on your harddrive. I went to save and the usual window opened up which was "documents library" though basically "my documents" folder - I saved to a folder within this location. When exiting the website and going to "my documents" folder, it was not there. I realized at this time, actually, that I've had this problem before. Though the file was definitely saved, it does not show up even in a search of the entire C drive. Returning to Ancestry, this time, instead of saving to the default folder, I went to C - users - my user name. This time there was a "Documents" folder in the list. Not "My Documents" - just plain "Documents." THAT was where the previously saved file was. I still cannot find it anywhere on my harddrive with a search, nor is there any plain "Documents." folder when I try to access it outside the saving process. I read this discussion on the difference between "documents" and "my documents" and it seems as if there's not really supposed to be a difference. My experience doesn't jive with that, but I have NO idea what the answer is. If it was just an Ancestry document, it would be annoying rather than important. However, my son also lost a work-related document he thought he saved in somewhat the same situation. Can someone please explain this (in somewhat simple terms) so... Read more

A:Saved document lost

Hello Clairespin, welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

In Windows 7, the Documents feature is actually a virtual library (which is why you couldn't see it when you searched for it) where you can link to files from different locations on your computer.

For example, I have a data folder on a separate partition where I keep all my personal data. If I then right-click this folder and select Include in Library it will appear in the library I choose even though it hasn't been moved to the library.

Libraries just make it a lot easier to keep tabs on your personal files by allowing you to look in one location for them rather than several locations on your hard drive.

By default, the Documents library includes your My Documents or Documents folder and the Public Documents folder, but you can add any other folders you want.

Please help point me in the right direction.  I checked the File association on Internet settings and document type docx is associated with Word, but it won't open.  What do I need to change?
I received the following information when I clicked on the troubleshoot link:

you find software needed to open your file.

Try refining this symptom description.  What exactly do you mean by "it won't open"?  Answering that might explain why you are posting this in an IE forum.  E.g. right-click, Copy Shortcut whatever it is that you are calling
a "broken link" and Paste it here.
Otherwise, try right-click, Save target as... to put the file into your Downloads (Ctrl-j) and then use right-click, Properties to find its
full path and name.  Note that that would be quite different from what the Copy Shortcut step would have shown.
Next I suspect that the Set Associations GUI tool may not be showing you the correct information.  FWIW it certainly doesn't show me the correct information in W8.1.  So, I would try checking if you have an explicit association and file type combination
by using the assoc and ftype commands in a cmd window.  In fact, instead of just showing the ftype for the current association I would use this:
    ftype  |  find  /i  "word"
Then you could take the most appropriate template (not necessarily the one pointed to by the assoc command) and fill it in on a Run... dialog (or a ... Read more
