Is port mirroring of Domain Controllers still a requirement for ATA?

Q: Is port mirroring of Domain Controllers still a requirement for ATA?

I have over 400 domain controllers. The initial look at ATA seemed to require port mirroring on the DC's and that was just impossible. I was told an agent of some type on the DC's was coming. Is that an option now?

Preferred Solution: Is port mirroring of Domain Controllers still a requirement for ATA?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I was excited to see that the new ATA 1.6 has a Lightweight Gateway that no longer requires port mirroring by installing it directly on the Domain Controllers. This makes total sense to me and gives me confidence in this ATA team. We have VMWare
and the port mirroring was an issue.
However, we are not excited about the .NET requirement on the Domain Controllers. The installation does indicate it is needed for the setup, but does anyone know if we can uninstall the .NET component once the installation is complete? Any thoughts?
Thanks!

Hello,
We have a few virtualized Domain Controllers on VMware. As the lighweight Gateway is not very lightweigt - also with 16GB of RAM we were running out of Memory on our DCs - we decided to try port mirroring. This is working very good, but sometimes we get
the message that no traffic is received from one of the Domain Controllers. The only Thing we Need to do then is to restart the Gateway Service.
So the port mirroting is working and traffic is received by the Gateway.
Anyone else noticed this?
Could it be because we mirror the traffic from 3 Domaon Controllers to one port? But it also happens to the Gateways where we only mirror one DC.
But as I said - after a restart of the Gateway Service the error disappears and everything is working again.

Hi Just installed the latest version of Windows 2003 for Small Business (Sp1)

I have installed this OS on a new Fujitsu PRIMERGY TX150 S4.

Now I want just to use this Server as a server on a Workgroup. But the OS insists that it should be the Domain Controller. And then it just shuts it self down. Below is a log from the event viewer. Is there a way around this or will I have to bow down to the might of Microsoft. Just don't really want to configure the entire Lan from workgroup to Domain

This computer must be configured as a domain controller. It will be shut down in 30 minutes. To prevent this computer from shutting down, run Setup on the disk that you used to install the operating system to configure the computer as a domain controller.

We have a primary and secondary domain controller on our network. We use a windows 2000 exchange server as our primary controller and another server as our secondary controller. to start, the active directories are not the same, as they should be between the two servers. how do i fix that?

the other problem I am starting to have is that the Windows xp client machines can't find the domain after being rebooted. I end up having to rejoin the domain in order to get the client machines to log on. If the client logs off, without rebooting, logging back onto the domain is no problem. I think this has something to do with the clients trying to log onto the secondary controller for some reason, and since the active directories arent sync'd, its only causing more problems...can anyone shed some light on the subject? thanks.

A:Domain Controllers

Hey DVation, sounds like you need to force replication for Active Directory between your Primary and Secondary domain controllers. Only members of Domain Admins or Enterprise Admins groups can perform this function unless you have been delegated the appropropriate permissions.
Refer to the following link for details:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/tr...2003/proddocs/entserver/dssite_force_repl.asp
***********
As far as your XP machines go, make sure that your DNS suffix for each PC is correct and that your IP, DNS, and Gateway addresses are correct. Windows 2000/XP use DNS for name resolution in an Active Directory environment. Also, is Active Directory running in Mixed Mode or Native Mode?

I have quite a number of DC's and the configuration of port mirroring is something that we just cant take on.

I understand there is going to be a release of ATA where the port mirroring is not a requirement and an agent will take that role on the DC.

Anyone heard of this?

We use VMWare (with UCS) but don't have the premium license so can't do distributed switching. I know it's not ideal, but can we do port mirroring on the trunk port to the UCS? Would this result in additional overhead or gateways required?
If this won't work we're considering standing up a Hyper-V cluster and migrating our DCs over to it. I'm pretty sure that will work.
Any other suggestions? Thanks!

Should I be upgrading any of these to SP1?

A:Upgrade Domain Controllers to SP1 or not

Hello Abuttino,

I would recommend to wait until the "official" SP1 RTM is released by Microsoft sometime this first quarter of 2011. Afterwards, it should be available in Windows Update, and for download (standalone version) directly from Microsoft.

Hope this helps,

I have some questions regarding changing the hardware in my domain controller. Im basically rebuilding it with new Processor, RAM, Mobo, etc.
Its just a desktop computer running Windows Server 2003. I plan to keep all the names of the machine and IP/domain the same. Is there anything I need to lookout for by doing this? I dont want to lose my active directory and user accounts on the machines that rely on this domain controller. Can I just build the new server, set it up as a domain controller with all the same settings and the computers will be aable to log into the new controller with the same users?

Adding Domain Controllers to sentisive groups
Listing Domain Controllers not monitored by ATA

Would be a great feature for future versions

Hey there,
Just had a couple of questions and was hoping someone could help me out.
I know that configuring port mirroring between the DC and ATA-Gateway is a MUST, however I was wondering:
1. Is there a way so that I DO NOT have to configure the port mirroring directly on the DC's connection port? Is there a way around this? Would RSPAN be a possibility? And if I do not set the port mirroring directly onto the DC, is there a risk that ATA
wont be able to gather the necessary data or wont be able to monitor anything at all?
2. What happens when the amount of traffic going from the DC to the ATA-Gateway is too high (too heavy)? Will ATA-Gateway loose any data coming in? Would it tank/store the data and process it in order? Or does ATA have a way of sorting out and prioritize
which data should be analyzed first?
Hope someone can help me clear this out

The Console, https://ata.domain.com,  returned an error while attempting to register  the gateway. For more details, please review the Center error logs.

I can open https://ata.domain.com from the DC without any issue and the Port required for the communication is open.
There is no error in Application or system logs on DC or ATA server.
Center error logs in ATA is also not pointing to any error.

Hi everybody,
after my last Implementation of ATA (one week ago) I got a strange "condition". It's an implementation with LWGW on all DCs (Server 2012 R2), no seperate gateway installation.
Everything worked like a charm, as always, just worked through the deployment guide. We get alerts on DNS Enums or suspitious AD requests. We see logons on different member servers and clients if we search for them. We see changes to security groups and
we even see if I create a new service on one of the DCs so I guess event forwarding works.
What we don't see: Any logons on the domain controllers. It doesn't matter if I rdp into one of the DCs or via console. If I search for one of the domain controllers and let ATA show the "profile page" of it, the timeline ist just empty. Tried
different DCs, different user accounts, even created new users and new domain admins. ATA doesn't recognize any logon on domain controllers.
I appreciate any hints.

Thanks!

Thanks, regards, tim

At my work we have an active directory domain. In the root of this domain there are two domain controllers.

ie dc1.mywork.com, dc2.mywork.com

When users login, they always seem to get authenticated by dc2, as you can see the login script running from that server, and when we shut down dc2, no one can login.

(have not shut down dc2 for any length of time to see if dc1 will eventually "take over" the login duties)

Where can I specify which server provides authentication for the domain? Or can I be assured that dc1 will take over for dc2 when dc2 goes down?

Hello !

I am deploying ATA on a big organization. I am installing ATA Center and ATA Gateway first before doing port mirroring ( yes i know i shouldn't, but i need to deploy ATA first then request the network configuration because the network team has been busy ).

after finished installing, i notice these things :

- A lot of organization's entities are learned, from domain to groups.
- Traffic (captured messages/sec on ATA Gateway ) on performance monitor when validating installation.

My question is :

- Do the network already configured port mirroring ?
- If yes, then why i cant get any suspicious activities, even though i already simulated an attack ?

thanks before !

Hello,
I have a scenario where some DCs are on XenServer and some in Hyper-V and I need to configure port mirroring to a gateway but have found some challenges. First, it appears that port mirroring is not supported in Xen, at least that's what I've researched
and been told. Second, Hyper-V does support port mirroring AS LONG AS the DCs and gateway are on the same host. If they are on different hosts, port mirroring will stop working.
I am interested to know what are other options I have, besides lightweight gateway, to configure port mirroring.
I appreciate your input,

Hi
I just would like to verify something quick. I plan to implement ATA in an environment with a single ATA GW. This environment also consists of two domain controllers and i would like to have this single GW monitor traffic for both domain controllers.

Therefore would like to know if its possible to Mirror traffic of two DC's to the single ATA GW and what would be the config in that case?
The ATA GW would be running as a VM on a Hyper-v host.
Some guidance would be much appreciated.

I am attempting to test ATA and have created a test DC and ATA Gateway connected to the same virtual switch on the same hyper-v host (2012R2, all recommended patches installed). I have also enabled "Microsoft NDIS Capture" on the virtual switch
and configure the DC as the source and a secondary none routable vNIC on the gateway as the destination (1.1.1.1/30, no dns or gateway). All vNICs are tagged on my test vLAN (ALL traffic must be tagged on these hosts) and I fear this may be the issue. Does
Hyper-V port mirroring support tagged traffic? Is this my issue and if so how do I solve this problem.

I was initially led to this assumption due to the following link:
https://cloudbase.it/hyper-v-promiscuous-mode/
Which states: "Traffic generated on a VM with a vNIC set to tag traffic with a VLAN id cannot be directly monitored on another VM, unless trunking is set on the target" and then suggests running the following command: "Set-VMNetworkAdapterVlan
VM3 -Trunk
-AllowedVlanIdList "100,101"
 -NativeVlanId 0"
However I tried this for my specified "Mirror" nic the gateway as well and it did not work.  It is worth mentioning that I have not yet installed the gateway and have used the Microsoft network Monitor tool in promiscuous mode
as prescribed and returned no results for LDAP or KerberosV5. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I have the latest version of ATA - 1.9.7312.32791
I have deployed ATA Lightweight Gateway to many domain controllers throughout my organisation from exactly the same "Microsoft ATA Gateway setup.exe" with accompanying .json file in the same folder.

Nearly all the Domain Controllers have been Windows Server 2016 Core with a quiet install via command line.
The installation has worked perfectly with the exception of two domain controllers on the same physical subnet/site.
The installation error code in the log is:
Error [\[]TaskAwaiter[\]] System.Net.Http.HttpRequestException: An error occurred while sending the request. ---> System.Net.WebException: The underlying connection was closed: An unexpected error occurred on a send. ---> System.IdentityModel.Tokens.SecurityTokenValidationException:
Failed to validate certificate thumbprint [\[]thumbprint=FC78E602AA1E8BF57CC2270E81788E5ADC511DF4[\]]

Seeing as every other installation worked fine, I suspect something must be blocking or interfering with the certificate being successfully negotiated back at the ATA centre
The likelyhood if being an error with the JSON file is extremely small as the failures occurred in the middle of the installation program, with successful implementations either side of the two that failed.

What can I get the network team to check regarding firewalls, network traffic or blocked ports?

Has anyone seen similar?

Thank you

Chris

Can Microsoft please provide methodology for setting up Windows Event forwarding (Sender initiated) for a Domain Controller based on a Windows Server 2012 R2 Core installation? Unfortunately all of your documentation relies on using the local Event

So I got SPAN tech configured which basically copies all the layer 2 traffic from certain selected Cisco switch ports to a dedicated port. I have a Windows 2012 R2 Server attached to this dedicated port (TCP/IP isn't configured on this Windows NIC) so I
can capture this spanned traffic.
Unfortunately, when I use Message Analyzer 1.3.1 (build 4.0.7551.0) it doesn't seem to capture spanned layer 2 unicast traffic. I use Microsoft-Windows-NDIS-PacketCapture provider configured to capture the traffic from a NIC that gets spanned traffic.
Here how a typical capture looks like:

What I would like to see is proper parsing up to application layer of spanned layer 2 unicast traffic, the way how it gets parsed when I do parse traffic that is destined or originated from this particular PC (or broadcast/multicast traffic). For example,
I'd like to see SMTP data, etc.
It looks like I see only layer 2 broadcasted traffic, like in the screenshot (note MAC destination). All frames that I see are layer 2 broadcasts while I'm sure that this NIC gets unicasts as well and in a much larger volume.

And just in case, Wireshark does capture SPAN traffic well in the same scenario and reconstructs it up to desired SMTP and other application layer protocols without issues.
I've experimented with different options and different capture scenarios but haven't found any way around this.
Please advise.

I have some domain controllers on branch offices, that has 2 interface cards, as 1 interface is linked to a backup device, for this example, lets call them Network and Backup.
I have specifically defined in the config of the ATA LGW that it should only capture traffic from Network card, but whenever the backup solution starts it will generate 50-60% traffic load on Backup card, and ATA LGW then reports more traffic then it can
handle and drops some traffic.
The Network card is basically idle with nothing much to do.. CPU is average 2% and memory load is 40%, but 10Gb available still.
When backup job finishes, the Health status goes back to normal.

I have Cox @home for my ISP. They recently blocked port 80. I was running several small web sites off my Windows 2000 server. I use free DNS from ZoneEdit.com and hn.org. hn.org only allows you to put an IP and not another port after it - I thought of doing 0.0.0.0:8080 or something like that. ZoneEdit allows you to put AnotherHostedSite/whatever - so, I could use this for some of my sites becuase I do have a couple actually on a host company's servers. ZoneEdit allows you to only have 5 free uses of DNS. I need more sites than that. Yes, I could pay for thier wonderful service, but I'm pretty cheap and would like a way around it. These sites don't get a lot of traffic. Is there any other free DNS service that would work? Or any other way around this? What about something on my PC? Hmmm.... I wonder how DSL would work out?

Any suggestions would be appreciated!!!

Thanks,
Cory

I read a number of blogs on how to shutdown USB storage ports but I am not having luck in what I am trying to accomplish.
Standalone laptop with windows 7
User is Waldo and he has stand user rights.
I am the admin with access to the USB ports.
If I create a group called USBdenial and add Waldo in that group.
I go to %windir%\inf and look for usbstor.inf and usbstor.pnf. In each file I right click go to properties and under security I add the group USBdenial.
I edit USBdenial and click on deny full function which should not allow access to a thumb drive.
I save my changes and login as Waldo.
When I plug in a thumb drive it works and I am able to copy and delete files from that drive. NG big time.
The only way I am able to shutdown the USB storage port is if I go into regedit and change the USBStor from a 3 to a 4.
My problem is that fix disable the ports for Admin and users. I am looking to shutdown the port only for one standard user out of 3 people.
Need you help thanks

Hello all. I was talking on skype and lost internet connectivity while talking. I received the error above (Firewall Settings HTTP (port 80) HTTPS port 443 FTP port 21 error message). I am running a laptop with windows XP and IE 7 and my antivirus is AVG and I also have Ad-Aware.

I'm not much of a computer person but I did some research online and tried a few things: I turned off the option on skype's advanced settings for it to listen on Port 80 and then rebooted. I also ran a command, 'netstat -aon' and did not find a listing of 1270.0.1:80/443 or 0.0.0.0.80/443 which seems to imply that nothing should be affecting port 80 or 443.

I also downloaded firefox and it cannot access the internet either. The only way I'm able to access the internet at the hotel I'm located at was to call the hotel's tech support and they had me go into the LAN settings of internet options and manually select port 8080.

Any more suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Mike

Some info on common ports used, http://www.chaminade.org/MIS/Articles/Fire...ortSecurity.htmI don't know much about connectivity problems...but it seems to me that...if you never had this problem before and your system connects properly outside of this hotel...the hotel/location may be the problem.Worth a read, IMO: http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-37752-c...on-the-internetLouis

Open Internet Explorer. Click Tools > Internet Options > Connections > Lan settings > Proxy server > Advanced. Delete the proxy server settings under HTTP, HTTPS (secure) and FTP (and Socks, if any). Then, under Proxy server, uncheck all boxed.

If running Firefox too, disable proxy server.
