Windows 10 Pro on T430s

Q: Windows 10 Pro on T430s

I hope this isn't a dupe thread. I tried searching and couldn't find the info. I just purchased a used T430s that came with Windows 8, but at some point along the way someone installed Windows 10. The first thing I want to do is make sure that this is a legit/verified Windows 10, and secondly how do I download drivers from Lenovo for Windows 10. When I go to the product page, it doesn't give me the option for Windows 10. It shows Vista through 8, but not 10. Any help is greatly appreciated. GBA

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I Have a T430s bought directly from Lenovo, used recovered discs to restore, found Win Activation key from BIOS, upon trying to activate Win 8, it says the key is invalid. I've read the other (many!) threads on this issue. How can I activate my restored computer's version of Win 8??

A:T430s: How to get my windows 8 license key

Hello,

I think it has been about six years since Lenovo sold the T430s, which I think came with options to have either Windows 7 or Windows 8 pre-loaded onto it.  Are you certain the recovery discs are the correct ones for this ThinkPad's OEM Windows Product ID license key?

You can try downloading Microsoft Windows 7 and 8.1 directly from Microsoft's support web site and seeing if either of those will work with the PID key:

Windows 7: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows7
Windows 8.1: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows8ISO

If neither of those work, I would suggest calling Lenovo Support directly at +1 (800) 426-7378 (toll-free within the United States) and they may be able to determine which version of Windows is licensed for the computer by looking up its model and serial numbers.

I am terrified of screwing this up given that the software on the laptop runs my wife's business.  You can imagine the ramifications mess it up.

I have googled/searched on this site multiple threads and they each have a different twist.
Some say put the new SSD in the laptop while others say that I should connect it using the USB cable.
Also, there was some confusing info about AHCI, Aligning sectors, Indexing, TRIM, etc...

Data Requirements:  Used space on current HDD = 300GB.  New SSD is 500GB.
I do not wish to use the old HDD after cloning.

Hardware purchased for cloning project:
Samsung Evo 850 500GB Internal SSD
Startech USB 3.0 to 2.5" SATA III Hard Drive Adapter Cable w/ UASP-SATA to USB 3.0 Converter for SSD/HDD

Would somebody please be kind enough to walk me through this and post current instructions?
I have read about Acronis True Image, Samsung Magician, Macrium Reflect, etc... and there doesn't appear to be a consensus.

I feel like I have just enough information to be dangerous and really screw this up.

Anybody want to help me through a topic that has been covered repeatedly but is still terrifying to me?

Thanks

P.S.  I am willing to pay $25 via paypal if you are experienced in doing this and will walk me through the process....

First, welcome to the forum.

> I am terrified of screwing this up given that the software on the laptop runs my wife's business.  You can imagine the ramifications mess it up.

1. You're going to copy the contents of your current HDD to your new SSD. If for any reason there's a problem you can always go back to the HDD. Its contents won't have changed.

2. In any case, if this system is critical to your wife's business then presumbly you already back up the HDD. Back it up again just before you begin the clone process just in case.

> I have googled/searched on this site multiple threads and they each have a different twist.
Some say put the new SSD in the laptop while others say that I should connect it using the USB cable.
Also, there was some confusing info about AHCI, Aligning sectors, Indexing, TRIM, etc...

1. Put the HDD in the external USB enclosure and put the SSD in the T430s main drive bay. Temporarily boot from the HDD in the USB enclosure. Clone from HDD to SSD. Reboot normally (i.e. from the SSD).

2. If you're on Windows 7, 8.1 or 10 then there's no need to mess with those confusing parameters. Let the OS sort this stuff out.

I have  bought Lenovo T430s laptop recently. The main problem is that it came win Ubuntu OS. I formated all the partition data and tried to install Windows 7. There was a "A required CD/DVD drive driver is missing" issue, where a windows prompts asking me to point the directory where to load that driver. It's on that step, where I should select where to install the drive, so I tought it was the HDD drivers. I tried with UEFI/Legacy tricks such as forcing my BIOS to use UEFI only or LEGACY only. I also tried to change the HDD options from AHCI to Compatability and many variations. Well at first time, i tried with putting the chipset drivers to usb disk and point the driver then uncheck the "Hide drivers that are not compatible with my computer" and tried to force it use my drivers. Tried with different drivers and every time I got stuck to the same problem. Then I tried with Windows 8 and Windows 10, It just installed without problem. Later I had issue with my Cooling Fan. It stoped working, So i returned my laptop to the shop, where I bought the laptop. They said that they sent it to a service and the service changed the HDD and the motherboard. The HDD was Seagate 320GB, now it is HITACHI 320GB. The motherboard is changed, because previous motherboard had Compatibility options, that was suited for windows 8, now it's gone (may be old BIOS chip/software or newer, I dont' know, my BIOS version is 2.7). So after I got my laptop back (repaired) I got it with new H... A:T430s Windows 7 Installation Issue

Hi,

You need to add the USB 3.0 drivers to the WIndows 7 installation media.  There are several threads on this topic here on the forums.  It can be done manually (a real pain...) or with one of several OEM tools.

Here's the Intel one:  https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25476/Windows-7-USB-3-0-Creator-Utility

You may also need to make the flash drive UEFI-bootable if that's you preferred installation mode.  That involves some file manipulation, but not a complete rebuild of the media.

Hi everyone,I've a T430s for more than a year now (second hand). Everything was fine until my suddently HDD died last week because of bad sector, after putting the laptop on hibernation for the night.I've bought a SSHD to replace my HDD and asked a friend who is quite good at computing to reinstall windows 7 on it. Everything works exept the wifi, the laptop is not able to catch wifi signal ... (but internet works with an ethernet cable).Installing Lenovo drivers from the support website did not fixed the issue.Any idea about how to fix it or about the source of the problem? Thanks !!

A:T430s Wifi issue after reinstalling Windows

Welcome to the forum!

The site has three different drivers, is your friend sure she/he installed the correct one? I guess you're using a 64bits Win7, right?

Eventually ask her/him to check the device-id of the wifi card from the Device Manager.

Just did a clean install of Windows 10 on my T430s (Core i5 with 8 GB RAM and 128GB SSD).When I attempt to boot the laptop it hangs on the Windows logo with the small circles rotating and freezes. This happens randomly and it will boot properly 3 out of 10 times. The other times I have to power it off and on until I get the repair console and then tell it to boot normally. Sometimes this will boot but others I have to power it off and on repeatedly until it starts up. I had the same issue with Windows 7 so I'm stumped if it's a driver issue or something else going on with my laptop? Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

A:Lenovo T430s - Windows 10 boot freeze

Just wanted to add a Me Too to the list, so its not a one-of experience.Recently bought a referb T430 and am loving it.I upgraded hardware to 16GB RAM and a 500GB Samsung SSD to amp up the experience and so far so good, except for this failure to boot experience that has now appeared.I had also upgraded from Win 7 Pro to Win 10 Pro. Maybe a mistake? When the boot hang started i did various things like force power down and CTRL-ALT-DEL and on reboot everything would be fine. Thankfully.I have run the Lenovo Hardware scan thats part of Lenovo Solution Center with no errors.I have almost come to the point of doing a Windows 10 Reset but wanted to do some research first and found this reference to the same phenomenon.I am wondering whether it may be SSD related? I could try cloning back to a standard disk drive.I also still have the original Win 7 128GB SSD. I can also try that to see if the problem goes away. Will update if any further discoveries are made

I'm running a Thinkpad T430s with a fresh install of Windows 10 Pro. After a few days, the wifi disconnected and won't reconnect. Wireless card is Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205.  Network Settings has the wifi switched to off. Clicking it to switch to on changes nothing - it shows as on, but connections don't work, and if I close the Network Settings window and re-open, the switch is back to off. Windows 10 will not switch off of airplane mode. Hi Nordic74,Welcome to Lenovo Community! And happy to have you here.As I understand that you have query regarding which to buy G50-80 or T430s
Even mine preference will be T430s as it is a business class segment with better battery backup, screen resolution & lot other options. In G50-80 there is an option of AMD discrete Graphics and 15.6" screen but resolution is 1366 x 768 only.
T430s has security option aswell & lot of option for upgrade which is missing in G50-80 IMO.

I hope the above information helped you.

Hi.

I just got a Lenovo ThinkPad T430s refurbished for about $350 as good as new with activated Windows 10 Pro and 8GB RAM (which Im going to upgrade to 16GB). At home I usually use my Lenovo H50-55 Desktop displayed on my 47" Panasonic 3D TV, and I want to have the same option with my ThinkPad just in case my Desktop should be down for any odd reason. But the VGA only output on the T430s doesnt transelate to HDMI digital just through a cable Ive bought. No signal on the TV. Ive read a little bit about VGA to HDMI conversions and ususally the people having issues with this have a transformer between the two and still they get no signal. Do I need a transformer, and if so; what kind, or is it just to do with lack of right driver?

Greetings from Norway

Hello, I have replaced screen on my T430s (used from T420s, because they are similar), before fully assembling (all the bottom screws), I tried to boot on battery and everything worked fine. After I finished assembling it, I couldn?t start my computer on battery, only with AC adapter. Battery is genuine (Panasonic came with T430s), I can charge or discharge it, tried battery gauge reset, tried to reset bios (take out CMOS battery), updated BIOS, nothing helps, by the way works with my T420s just fine (tried T420s battery on T430s same, nothing). Removing AC adapter causes laptop to shut off immediately.Am I missing something or it is a fault in mainboard?   Thanks in advance for any suggestions

A:T430s - Won't Start

It is hard to be sure without seeing it, but I think it is most likely the main (7-amp??) fuse by the battery connector, which is similar to the fuse for AC input.  The main battery fuse is separate from the smaller charging fuse.

I just acquired a Seiki 39" 4k resolution monitor (SE39UY04). Intel 4000 graphics support 4k resolution. Displayport 1.4 (as equipped on the T430s) supports 4k (at 30 hz). I have approved displayport to hdmi converter, and a 4k enabled hdmi cable that came with the screen. I cannot figure out how to enable 4k resolution. I even tried forcing it in the Intel driver app, but I'm told the settings exceed available bandwidth. I set refresh all the way to 24 (the lowest valid number). Color depth is fixed at 32 bit - cutting that in half would certainly help, but I can't seem to change that (32bit is the only option in the drop down). Any suggestions for getting 3840 x 2160 @ 30 hz? I don't need more than 16bit color depth if that helps.  My target is business applications, no games or 3D. Just big spreadsheets and lots of multitasking. Thanks!

My 3 month old t430s has a major issue with the audio/sound.  At completely random times, I will have no sound for a matter of minutes or hours.  This is primarily with web software and persists across multiple browsers.   - The speakers all test and the troubleshooting tests say they are working just fine     - Occasionally, when testing the speakers, the control panel will give an error stating that they are in use by another program and that program needs to be shut down before they can be tested. - all drivers are up to date and have recently been uninstalled and reinstalled - the default audio device is set to the appropriate speakers - I have had this problem with and without the Dolby Advanced Equalizer driver that comes as an optional sound update - I have had sporadic luck with plugging in headphones, but often this does not give me any audio either.   Anyone else have this issue or one of the pros can shed some light on this,Iamrunningoutofoptions and becoming increasingly frustrated with it.   Thanks!R

A:No Sound/Audio on t430s

Hi, R

What is the operating system installed on your machine? Has this issue been occurring the entire time you've owned the computer?

If you navigate to the Device Manager (Control Panel ? Device Manager), do you see anything suspicious under about the audio devices? Any markings next to them or errors?

Finally, if you search Event Viewer in the Start Menu and open it, then you can look and see if any errors have been logged by your system. If you could, look at the Windows Logs and post a screenshot here if any errors/warnings show up.

Best,
Adam

How do i install the preloaded applications using the recovery media ( I ordered from Lenovo) without having to reiinstall windows all over agian? Also  Shoudl I decide to reinstall the whole PC by mesns of the recovery Media, will windows be automatically activated or do I need a separate windows 7 product key. I kmow the recovery media is a Oem build but it came without any Windows Product/activaion key. Thanks for your reply. MAH11

A:recovery media T430s

Welcome to the forum.

Recovery media restores your ThinkPad's HDD to the state it was in when it left the factory. It will install a fresh copy of Win7 Pro plus all the ThinkVantage programs and other preloaded applications that were shipped in those days. It will, of course, overwrite any applications you installed and any data you created.

Note that the Win7, drivers and apps on the restore media will now be several years old. You will have to run Windows Update and Lenovo System Update to get all the updates that were issued since. However, your Win7 Pro license will be preserved without having to activate again.

P.S. if you upgraded to Win10 you should be able to do that again without having to re-activate.

hello all I have a lenovo t430s i7 with nvidia nvs 5200 i use it for work and some gaming. i'm going to replace alot of the caseing and making it look newer as i got it as a used refurbed so if i'm taking it apart and going this far i'm considering placing copper shims on the cpu and gpu to make it run alittle cooler. just cant find any info as to what size i would need. anyone got any clues or know that would really help out. thank you

A:T430s copper shims

Hi, darkschneider94Very interesting plan.It seems thermal pad with high Thermal conductivity value is a better solution then a copper shim. Because of contact beween the shim and cpu/gpu/chipset and the heat sink surfaces. You can't force the high clamp to the caseless chips. Definitely, thermal pad 0.5...1 mm, soft enough, provides better contact quality. I'm sure it's unacceptable to use any thermal pad for CPU especially. So, use thermal grease.

Ok, How do I get this T430s to recognise ONLY the nVidia graphics? I have it set to nVidia only in the BIOS, However, this thing INSISTS on using the pathetic HD4000 graphics when trying to play a game. This was easy to do for the T420. Why wont this work for the T430s? What I've done:Install ONLY the nVidia graphics drivers.... I still wants to use the "generic" VGA driver for everything. It forces me to use the nVidia panel to list games for use with the nVidia graphics. This doesn't always work. Is there a fix for this nightmare?

So recently on my Lenovo T430s it just randomly powers down. This could happen when i'm sitting at my desk plugged in, or at home typing in bed on battery power. The battery still has plenty of life I can usually go 2-4hrs on a charge, until it just shuts down again, but then I can power it back up without having to plug in or anything. It does some to occur more frequently if the computer is moved. Now get this, when this happens it won't turn back on unless i disconnect the battery and reconnect it. Sometimes I have to do this several times! You can imagine the frustration when you've been putting time into  a bunch of R code or a document only to hvae your computer just power off and lose what you've been working on! Seems to me like maybe the batter is losing its connection?  I called lenovo they were reluctant to help because the computer is going on about 2.5yrs old but it still runs great! One thing they advised was to install the most recent BIOS and power manager, which I did. But still keeps happening.  Anyone got any thoughts on this? thanksTC

I have confirmed with two different Lenovo technical support reps that the mSATA port in the T430s is SATA III, although I am concerned that they don't know what they're talking about. The QM77 chipset only supports two SATAIII connections, which means either the Ultrabay is only SATA-II (unlikely), or they've included a third party controller to provide the SATAIII speeds to the mSATA port (also unlikely). Cany anyone confirm whether or not the T430s mSATA port is SATAII or III?

A:T430s mSATA speed?

It's a direct connection to the PCI-E bus. The mSATA probably has a built-in controller.

Hi All,Today, after a windows and icloud update, my T430s started presenting memory problens.I have 2 x 4Gb installed.I performed the system diagnosys and it only presents problem when the 2 memory cards are installed. The test does not present problems when running only 1 memory card, independent of the card or slot. I have made test for all combinations.I have also run all other tests on the system diagnosys and they all passed. Any clues of what might be the problem? Thanks,Luis

Hi, I encounter the following issues with my Thinkpad T430s:- sometimes the mouse pointer starts moving on its on, always towards the same direction and always at the same speed. Rebooting temporarily resolves the issue until it occurs again. Reducing the sensitivity in the driver software does not have any impact. Pressing the trackpoint and letting go does nothing to stop it. - the left mouse button acts like a weird combination of a left click + some function that brings up context menus, if available (e.g. on desktop). This happens using the trackpoint, touchpad and sometimes even when using an external mouse. - Right mouse button does not function at all. No matter what function is assigned to it in the driver software, it does not work. External mouse works. All this ONLY happens if the trackpoint is ENABLED in BIOS. If I disabled the trackpoint in the BIOS, touchpad and all mouse buttons work fine. I tried Windows 10 and Windows 7. The problems occur under both operating systems using different driver software. Therefore, I do believe this to be a hardware issue. Anyone has experienced this issues and knows a good way to fix it? Thanks in advance!

I cannot be sure without seeing it, but my guess is that you need a keyboard

My old LCD was broken, however you could read part of the screen. External monitor (still) works fine. Bought a new LCD. Checked the the old one before changed, it was still working partly. Changed to the new one, did not work, changed back to the old one did not work at all. When starting I think I can notice a small tiny light which then disappear both from old and new LCD. What did I do wrong?

I have a T430 that will not boot when the battery is in the laptop.  I thought this was a battery issue so I bought a replacement from Amazon and the problem went away for about 3 months.  Now the issue is back so I ended up buying a new battery directly from Lenovo just to make sure I was getting a good battery.  Last night I put the brand new battery in the laptop and again it will not boot with the battery in. To be clear.  The laptop works fine when it is either docked or plugged in with the battery not installed.  The problem is only when the battery is in the laptop.  It blinks once and then shuts right back down.  I know the battery is good since I bought the brand new one directly from Lenovo.   Any suggestions?

I've had a T430s fpr about 9 months and the lid hinge became a bit loose some months after I bought it. When the lid is open it moves slightly back and forth freely. Is this a common problem? Is there an easy way to fix it without sending it for repair and waiting ages to get it back?
