X1 Carbon Touch 1st Gen Hinge Replacement

Q: X1 Carbon Touch 1st Gen Hinge Replacement

A hinge has broken on m X1 Carbon 1st Gen, Type 3443-CTO. Replacement is addressed in my copy of Hardware Maintenance Manual for regular LCD screens but I can find no information on replacement with the Touch Screen. "Bezel" is just a narrow strip at the bottom - not a full frame. Removing this bezel strip does not look like it would expose screws to replace the hinges. Does anyone know if the hinges are even replaceable with the touch screeen? If so, any pointers on how to access behind the screen? Same 04W3905 hinges as regular screen? Thanks for the help.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello and welcome,

I don't have such a machine but just took a quick look at the HMM.

The way I read it, the instructions in the 1st/main section applies to touch panels. The 2nd section is titled "Removing or replacing an LCD FRU for models without touch panelfunction" which I take to mean that the preceding section _is_ for touch.

My Carbon X1 5th Gen (20BS) left side hinge cracked and seperated completely at the bezel.  Anyone know where to get a replacement or, if I opt to go with a Lenovo repair, about how much the repair will be? I've been underwhelmed with this laptop since day one.  Slow performance (512GB/16GB with frequent reinstalls), slippery surface (why get rid of the famous rubbery coating?), and now a very expensive hinge crack clearly caused by metal fatigue. Meanwhile, my 1st Gen Carbon is still running strong.  No hinge problems, no cracks, minimal wear, and very zippy with Win 10 even running a measely 4GB RAM.

A:Carbon X1 5th Gen - broken hinge! Where to get replacement?

Looking at the picture, I would need to take it apart to see what needed replacing.  If it is still under warranty (some 20BS are), and the hinge snapped while opening the lid, I would carry it into a dealer who did warranty service.;  I would tell him or her what happened and explain that I only wanted it repaired if it was covered by the warranty.

Hi, I got a 3rd Gen Carbon X1 with a touch screen. Now the screen is broken and I am afraid I have to replace a new one. Is it possible for me to replace a non-touch screen instead of a touch one, since I found the touch function didn't that improtant for me? And if I have to get a touch screen, how much it would be?Thanks for the help!!

It isn't just the LCD that is different. The panel, bezel, lid, cable and hinges all are different.  If you want to repair with non-touch, the best choice might be to look for a used, complete assembly

Hi, I have this 3444CUU model with i7-3667U(3.2GHz),8GB RAM,240GB Solid State Drive,14in 1600x900 Multitouch LCD,

The touch screen had some cracks so I disabled it so laptp worked fine. Now the LCD display starts to have crack lines also and I have to find replacement for either LCD ONLY or LCD+touch screen.

The below list I copied from another thread but it doesn't really tell which will be working for mine, so I would need a part list for replacement if I am looking for LCD replacement ONLY, or LCD+touch screen combo.

Thanks a lot!

Hey all, I'm dealing with the dreaded hinge issue and found myself needing to replace the back cover. I have a Lenovo Ideapad S510p Touch, model number 20299, but the two parts that are compatible according to the hardware maintenance manual, are eitherLS51P LCD Cover With 0.3M Camera TS   Part #90203869LS51P LCD Cover With 1M Camera TS       Part #90203884I can't for the life of me tell whether I have a .3M camera or a 1M camera. Has anyone had any luck finding a specific Lenovo part with a number, where did you order? I'm also wondering whether I can just take off the camera on my current case and use it on a replacement cover as the camera itself isn't damaged, just the plastic backing where the right hinge's screws are supposed to be. Has anyone had any luck ordering a cheap non-touch cover for their touch? I don't use touch anyway so if fits without the added touch functionality, I will be happy.I also want to add how the problem came about. It's not under warranty anymore, but the right hinge suddenly got very stiff, the hinged somehow tightened itself. Trying to close the top normally is what caused the hinge screws to separate from the plastic backing on the case.

Hi all. I'm planning to buy an X1 Carbon, and I'd like a hint to help me to choose between touch and non-touch display; I'm not planning right now to make a major use of the touch panel, but this could change in the future. Apart from the touch feature, there are other differences between these two options? Image quality? Screen surface, matte or glossy? Thickness? Weight? Battery usage? Other? Thanks in advance for any suggestion. EDIT: Sorry, wrong forum section. Can't find a button to delete. I've had this machine about about a week, so far I really like it.  Can't say yet that I love it yet, but it does what I need it to and the price is better than a tablet with the same functions and already has a keyboard.  This machine is kept in a padded case when not used in my desk drawer it does not bounce around in my briefcase etc.
This morning the left button on the touch pad does not work.  At first glance it sort of looks like it is caught on something or stuck, the right button works great a broken switch under the button is also possible but this thing doesn't move at all I'd think a switch would still move just not contact properly inside.  I need my machine and I've made a couple of upgrades like a SSD for the stock hard drive and a 8 gig ram chip, I am not thrilled about pulling those components in order to return for warranty replacement etc. as I'm pretty sure you won't be returning the same machine I sent in.  I'm considering pulling it apart to see if it is indeed stuck so it can be pushed back out from the inside but if this is a common issue with this machine I'd like to know that...
Can I be sent a new touch pad component, I believe I saw this is a separate board that attaches to the motherboard with a ribbon cable?  I'm not afraid of this procedure myself as I've been building desktops since the 90's and this is a really simple hardware to work on from the looks o... A:New week old Inspiron 11 3000 3558 (touch) stuck or broken button on touch pad--warranty parts replacement?

This is an fyi about the final resolution of this issue.  After a lot of arguing dell sent me what was supposed to be the touchpad but what I got was only the plastic palmrest no touchpad. Then because it's a "daughter card" I got more argument about the touchpad.  I got hot enough that I opened up the back, lifted out the battery, took out the two funky looking screws and the whole pad just fell right out of the machine.  The buttons seemed fine so I screwed it back down, put the battery back in and closed it up.  It's now great, the button was indeed hung up on the edge of the plastic palmrest.  This is a very well designed inside machine, it all screws down and all connections are with plugs or ribbon cables.  I wrote back to dell and told them they need to fire their tech manual writers because they're idiots, a monkey could have done this.  Apparently it is not easy to find only the mouse pad it's generally sold with the palmrest from what I can tell.  This whole machine is so well designed I scratch my head why the cpu isn't socketed unless they decided there was no room for a socket etc, which I can see that argument.  So if your mouse pad quits try popping it out first it may just be hung up.

Hello all.
I have a non touch E5450 base, I want to put a touch screen top assembly onto it. I have sourced the whole top assembly including hinges. But I was wondering if the Hinge covers are different on this particular model depending on the screen used? I know some of the 7000 series have different hinge covers, but not sure about the 5000 series.
Comparing photos on Google has been inconclusive and I am unable to find a part number.

Anyone able to help me?

Hello, I have a first generation X1 carbon (model 3448) with what I thought was a broken hinge. However, it turns out that the hinge itself is fine, but simply not screwed on properly. Somebody must have disassembled the laptop in the part and reassembled it using the wrong screws. I am now trying to identify the correct screws in order to repair it. I have the manual, downloaded from here: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/be/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-x-series-laptops/thinkpad-... But my hinges don't look like the ones in the manual, they actually look like these (part number 04W3905): https://www.ebay.com/itm/Lenovo-ThinkPad-X1-Carbon-Gen-1-14-Laptop-LCD-Left-Right-Hinges-Hinge-04W39... As you can see from the picture, the holes in the hinges are big, and the screws have extra-wide flanges. The hinge itself is certainly a Lenovo-specific part, but I imagine the screws will be some sort of industry standard screw. But can anyone tell me what types of screws they are, and what they are called? Many thanks

A:Lenovo X1 Carbon Screen hinge broken

Unless you have taken that kind of screen apart before, I suggest professional help.  The panels are fragile and the antenna wires need to be removed and rerun.  All that comes after disassembling the body.  If you do it yourself, I suggest taking a lot of pictures during the process, showing how the wires are run.  On that model, some of the wires run under the motherboard and some over.  Unless you have done it, it is hard to figure out.  The pinch connectors on the motherboard are also easy to break.  There are several threads where people break them, ruining the motherboard

So long story short, I was lying in bed, and adjusted the screen when I felt it become wobbly. Now, my X1 Carbon 3rd gen has always had a bit of wobble with the screen (as an aside: not acceptable for a laptop this expensive, but oh well), but this was beyond normal. I took a look and the hinge on the right side just completely ripped in half. I'm honestly absolutely astonished because the metal hinges were a huge selling point here... I'm 2 months out of warranty on a one year old laptop (not that Lenovo would fix this, I assume they'd just chalk it up to accidental damage and not a structural defect on their part), so I'm wondering how is the repair on something like this? I'm still going to give them a call and see what they say, but I just don't see them cooperating on this. My T410 gave me 5 years of life, it was beautiful. This X1C3 hardly got over 1 year. I think my time with Lenovo is winding down. Pics: Another one: 1

A:Re: U310 Touch Hinge

I purchased a Lenovo U310 Touch last May and it has been working wonderfully until recently.  I've noticed in the last few weeks that every time I open or close the lid, the hinge makes a loud cracking noise and pops off at the ends. I can press the hinge cover back into place, but it just continues to pop off every time I open/close it. I contacted Lenovo Support about the issue, and even though my machine is still under warranty, they will not fix it without charging me because they have no proof I didn't break it myself (which I find absolutely ridiculous; I haven't dropped or damaged it in any way, and if you look at the computer you can clearly see it is otherwise in perfect condition.)That being said, has anyone else experienced this problem with the U310? Does anyone have any suggestions to fix it? I am concerned that it will just get worse and eventually affect my display.

Earlier this year, I experienced a serious display flickering issue and the eventual full-blown display failure on my X1 Carbon (2015 20BS). The keyboard bezel around the display hinge (specifically the left one when you face the screen), is extremely sensitive to any amount of finger pressure. On top of that, the bottom of the laptop close to the hinge is just as sensitive to touch as well.  These sensitive areas can cause the display to stop working intermintently (off and on). Eventually, after about a week or so, the display would stop working all together. Since my X1 Carbon was just out of warranty, I had to send it to IBM for repair. The cost is $700, not including shipping and state + city taxes (about $50 worth). Initially I thought, maybe it was stress from carrying it around daily inside a laptop carrying case (I mean, X1 Carbon being a ultrabook..super portable right?). So now, after the repair, I actually treat this X1 Carbon way better than I do with my Apple Macbook Pro. In fact, the X1 Carbon is on house arrest, permanently sitting on my office desk. Fast forward a couple months since the repair, out of blue today, I decided to lower the audio volume, and I suddenly noticed a screen flicker. "Oh c*ap!" thought in my head.  Lo and behold, yep, the hinge trouble is back again without me ever putting any unsual stress on this ultrabook!. I am at a loss on what to do. At this point, if I spend anohter $700 on this repair, I might... Read more

But today the hinge is broken and I can't close the screen properly without adjusting it. I didn't drop it or damage it and I looked it up and saw that other people were having similar issues and saying it was a production failure. Is there anyway I can get a replacement or do I have to send it in for repairs? I'm in college and I'll be needing it for a couple more weeks so I can't send it in for repairs yet. And is the $99 fee not covered by the warranty? I called Lenovo support and they said they can't look at my laptop until I pay the fee. I feel like the quality of Lenovo has declined recently. I'm in the same situation as you.  I bought a U430 Touch in August and today the hinge on the left side broke when I closed it.  It's absurd that a hinge would break under normal use and not be covered by the warranty.  As far as I can tell I am going to have to send it in, although Best Buy (where I bought it) was more helpful than Lenovo.  I think Best Buy will pay the shipping and the $99 fee for me.  Since I need the computer for work I am going to wait to send it in.

I requested manager call back several times, and it's been 2 weeks no call back!Furthermore, someone is telling my extended warranty through Visa that this is accidental damage, and you know nothing about this problem, so now they won't cover the damage either.I demand something in writing saying this is a known issue, so that I can at least get it covered though my extended warranty! You clearly know about it, there are quite a few forum posts about it!Last effort, then class action!Thx.

Recently I have noticed that the hinge of my Y50-70 is slowly opening. Pictures here.  It is a known issue of this model that the left hinge is plauged by a design flaw, which will sooner or later cause the screen to crack/whole hinge area to break/whole screen to dangle on its right hinge only. I seek advice on how to loosen the left hinge nut, as I have read that this would fix the problem I'm facing. Would this prevent any future damage to the laptop caused by the hinge? Could anyone post a step-by-step video detailing how I should loosen this hinge nut and also how to put the laptop back together after that? Please and thank you! PS: I have done a lot of research online but have come up inconclusive on whether loosening the left hinge nut is effective in preventing any future damage. OK, posted yesterday about my Yoga 710 corner of the screen. In the manual (p. 56-7) it looks like I would need to remove a lot of the bits to change the hinges. Manual: https://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles_pub/yoga_710-14isk_14ikb_15isk_15ikb_hmm_201605.pdf But I also saw someone else say in an old posting somewhere that you don't need to do all of these steps. Thanks for the help, krm

A:How hard is the Yoga hinge replacement?

I have never seen the hinge itself fail.  On the ones I've seen the failure was the mounting point inside the lid.  To replace the lid, you need to remove everything.  From what I remember, the front cover should have enough room to come off with the screen attached, though you may need to loosen the hinge from the base on the other side.  Often, when I save time by skipping stems, it ends up taking longer.  Whatever you do, be sure to disconnect the battery before you start messing with the LCD cables

My HP ENVY Sleekbook 6-1010us has a broken hinge on the left side, the hinge used for opening the screen. Now, whenever I open the laptop, the screen becomes detached from the bottom and is held together by some wires and god knows what else. I then have to "re-assemble it", essentially. This worries me because it seems that it may break at any given moment. The damage is very surprising given that this occurred only through simple wear and tear from general use. I currently have a one year factory warranty on my sleekbook, and am wondering what I can do to get it repaired. Thanks.

A:Laptop "hinge" is broken and needs replacement

Hi, The chances of it being repaired under warranty by HP are slim, considering the type of damage. It certainly wouldn't hurt to ask. You can also  have it repaired by a HP authorized notebook shop. If you feel confident enough and willing to accept the risk of damaging your sleekbook, then you can repair it yourself. -erico

Not sure where else to turn, but I've had the HP ENVY 15t-j100 Select Edition CTO for a couple of years now (warranty expired), and I just noticed on the left-hand hinge (near the power button) that there's a missing screw. When I open and close the lid, it makes a very painful sounding cracking noise so I'm holding it together with electrical tape for now. I would love some replacement screws, if there are any to be sent. Not sure what other options I have. Thanks very much.

Hi, I bought this laptop December 2015 and to my surprise with a very mild usage the hinge has broken about 20 days ago. It is my only laptop and I also work part-time on this. I am really discomforted now. The hinge was always dodgy as it would rock a little but I gave it the benefit of doubt as this happens with quite a lot of laptops but I never imagined that being such a costly laptop, something like this would happen to my laptop. I contacted Lenovo and the assistant said that he will look into the issue and will email me a copy of the issue, but that never happened. I wonder why. I am not sure what else to do than raise a query here. Thanks,Renovatio66

I recently on 8/2014  purchased a HP envy for my son who just started college, He has been using the laptop gently and has had no falls or intentiontally caused physical damage to it.  A few months ago , the hinge and the part of the case attached t the left hinge broke and he is very disappointed.  I have used HP products for a long time and thought this will be a good tiime to introduce them to him, but he is very disappointed and so am I.  After research, I realize this is a know problem and many other users have had issues.  The laptop is still functional as long as it is left open. Please helpThank you.

As posted on page 3 of this discussion, a solution has been offered to customers within warranty whose laptops display hinge mount failures and have not otherwise been damaged. This information can be found here: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-U-and-S-Series-Notebooks/IdeaPad-U530-Touch-Hinge-struck/m-p/203...

Any updates on the U530 Touch? I am having the same problems as everyone else in these threads 1- a broken hinge and cracked screen. I now have a desktop with no touch screen rather than a laptop with a touch screen, 2 - a lack of response from Lenovo (never got my call within 3 days) and 3 - No local tech will touch it.

I purchased a Lenovo Y50-70 and a couple of days ago, the hinges made a creaking noise when I was openning it.  The next time I opened it, the plastic piece that covers the hinge popped off.  It has done a **bleep** on my touch screen as well.  This is extremely dissapointing bacuase the laptop for about 1000 dollars didn't last even 2 years. It has been used ONLY AT HOME. It wasn't dropped or anything. It is  a factory problem. Many people had the same issue. For example here.  Can someone from the customer service please contact me to discuss this issue? ??

Bought the S410p Touch mid 2014, and the left hinge of the notebook broke off late 2015. Prior to the hinge bending and coming off, cracking sounds were often heard when I open/close the notebook. It even caused a visible crack behind the screen and I have honestly never dropped or damaged the laptop. The touch screen is currently not working and I'm pretty sure its due to the crack that affected the screen. Frustrated, I went to the nearest Lenovo Technical Support to try to get this fixed under warranty but they insisted it was physical damage and did not approve my laptop under the warranty conditions.  Extremely frustrated and disappointed. Anyone else having this issue with their S410p Touch Ideapad?

Did you have any luck with this issue?  I had the same issue with my U530.  The hinge kept getting harder and harder to open and evenually, the top of the laptop just broke off.  It was out of warranty by 2 months when it happened so I didn't do anything about it until I saw several other people who had similar issues.

Hi - new to the forum but I see others have had this problem.  The laptop has suddenly developed this fault (left hand side of the screen/hinge coming away).  We  have had the laptop just over two years (John Lewis purchase so we are over the warranty perioid).  I am trying to find out if it can be repaired and who I should take it or send it to. Have approached local computer company (independent) and a company at this website http://www.lenovorepairer.co.uk/ to see if either can do it and how much it would cost.  Has anyone asked Lenovo directly to do repair and can it be done? There seems to be a general fault which others have experienced and commented on - our laptop has been used very carefully so really disappointed with this fault.  I doubt I would get any joy from complaining to Lenovo but is it worth a try?Any comments and experiences welcome.

Hello,  I have a problem with a hindge in Lenovo Y50-70. I found many people having the same problem: for example here. My hindge popped out without even moving the laptop from his place. I used it only at home and was normally closing the laptop when it happened. Unfortunately from the hinge a **bleep** on the screen was created as well.  This is really dissapointing and discouraging because this model cost me about 1000 dollars and haven't last even 2 years. Can someone from the customer service please contact me todiscuss this issue?  ??

Reply from Lenovo Support for my caseWe have received your case that is tied to machine with serial # QBXXXXXXXX. We are currently showing that machine went out of warranty on 7/4/2015. Due to the extreme length since it went out of warranty. At this time Lenovo is not able to offer a free repair on this machine. If we were maybe a few months after it went out of warranty we might have been able to assist. But due to the fact that we are now 11 months out of warranty and we can't cover a machine for such an extended period of time. There has to be a definite end to the warranty. At this time Lenovo will not take any further action on this case. My Response to above messageThank you for your response and looking into this issue at your earliest. Please refer to link here which has listed this issue as widespread issue for Ideapad U530 model and has offered to repair the laptop. Moreover this issue has been widespread issue on your other laptop models as well like U310, U310 touch and U410, U410 touch. This shows that there is design flaw in all of these laptops. Since this is design flaw at company end it will manifest sometime or other. In my case it has happened late since I have been using this laptop with more care comparative to other users who are having same issue earlier in the life of laptop. It is not expected of world class company like Lenovo to keep manufacturing such defective laptop.I have other Lenovo T430 purchased after 3 months of this laptop and it does... Read more

I purchased a Lenovo Y50-70 from Best Buy 60 days ago as my husband's primary computer for work, which he does from home.  It does not travel with him, just sits in the same place in our home. (i.e. no physical damage on our part from careless use).  A couple of days ago, the hinges made a creaking noise when my husband opened it.  The next time he opened it, the plastic piece that covers the hinge popped off.  Then we could see that the left hinge was "frozen" and not opening or closing at all, however, it had also pulled away from the screen and top cover and the screen was beginning to separate from the cover.
Thinking we had purchased a decent model (~$1150), we took it back to Best Buy but they said Lenovo tied their hands in being able process any kind of return.  I called Lenovo Customer Service (who said they couldn't authorize a return) and Technical Support (who also said they would not authorize a return).  The Best Buy manager offered to call Lenovo Customer Service, and did so while I waited in their store.  An hour later, and multiple transfers between departments, Tech Services said only Post-Sales could help us and they weren't open until Monday (today).  So today I called Post-Sales and was immediately told that only Tech Services could help.
Finally someone in Tech Services said they could have us send in the laptop for diagnosis but it was cosmetic so we would be charged a couple hundred dollars for the repair.&... Read more

A:Y50-70 Touch only - customer review - broken hinge...

I recently got a Y50 Touch PC. It worked well, no problems. I handled it well too. Now, there is a problem with the hinge. The 2 hinges attach the base of the laptop to the monitor (metal chassis, not the screen) with glue. Now the left hinge got detached as the glue was not able to hold it. Now the screen flexes when I close or open it. I was very disappointed to find something attached with glue on an otherwise good quality product. I could not find any place to report this to lenovo, so i posted this here. Any guide will be appreciated. Thanks.
