Can view shared files but get error if open or copy them.

Q: Can view shared files but get error if open or copy them.

i have 7 pcs connected through a hub and 6 of them can share everything, the problem is the other one witch allows only to browse for shared folders.

It can access all the others without a problem.
All can browse its shared folders.
None can copy / open / delete any shared file from this computer.
If i try to copy a file i get: "Cannot Copy 'Filename':Access is Denied"

The pcs are a mix of win XP Home / Pro, The one with these problems is XP home.

Any Ideas??

Preferred Solution: Can view shared files but get error if open or copy them.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am using a Windows XP as the main server computer. It is hardwired to the Internet and we have a wireless network setup for our laptops.

My employer wants the WinXP desktop to store shared files and for the laptops to be able to connect to the desktop

I set up the network on the WinXP computer with the Network Wizard in the control panel.

My laptop is a Win7 and my employer's laptop is Win8.

I can see the shared files from my laptop but when I click to open I get the following error pop up:

\\DELLDESKTOP\Documents and Settings is not accessible. you might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Not enough server storage is available to process this command.

I would sure appreciate any thoughts and help with this.

Thank you

A:Error trying to open shared files on WinXP from Win7

There are quite a few hits for this not enough storage space to process this command ' issue but it's not a common problem with no obvious reason or solution though it may just be a standard message for a permission or access problem.

You may have better luck if you set up a standard or Admin account on the Windows 7 machine with the same User name and password as you are using on the XP machine.

It might also help to change from the 128 bit encryption over to the 40 or 56 bit encryption on the Windows 7 machine at the Network and Sharing Center Advanced settings page.

Hey guys well I'm trying to set up the best network possible.... I use the Linksys WRTG. And I have 2 wired computers, and 2 wireless computers. But everyonce in a while I have problems, and don't know what to do... or how to fix them. Right now I can see the folder for my other wired connection, but I can't access it and I can't see the computer in the "View networked computers", so I guess that folder is there just because windows has seen it before, but not now.

I'm thinking about just restarting my network again, anyone have a good guide or anyhting?

I am running winows 7 ultimate 32bit as a server, i have the c:\ drive shared to all 13 users on the network. All 13 computers are running windows xp pro. The problem that I am having is this:

When i open up the shared c: drive on a windows xp computer, and open a folder to view files, it only shows 122 out of the 227 files.

when i open up the c: drive on the windwos 7 machine, i can see all 227 files.

when i open up excel or word, and open a file that is stored on the windows 7 machine, it will open fine, but when i try and browse for the file that is stored on the windows 7 machine, it does not show it.

now here is the interesting thing:
when i open up the shared c: drive on another computer running windows 7, (not the server) i can see all 227 files and have no problems.

i have multiple folders, ex: mypics2008, mypics2009, mypics2010, mypics2001, mydocs2000, mydocs2010, all shared off of the c: drive on the windows 7 server. this problem started a few weeks ago, i was able to see all the files in every shared folder off of the windows 7 server through all of the windows xp pr machines a month ago, and all of a sudden in the past few weeks, i am no longer able to see all of the files shared off of the server.

any help would be appreciated!

I have a couple of desktops and laptops connected on a wired network. I have no problems accessing and copying files. This isn't about access denied or other machines not being visible. My issue is that one of my laptops can be accessed and I can move through all shared folders but sometimes when I try to copy a file from this machine the copy dialog opens but no data is being copied. The transfer rate stays at 0kb/s. Rebooting this machine helps partially, but file transfers will start at well below 1Mb/s and very slowly rise some during the copy. I don't have this issue with any other machine. In fact, I have never seen an issue like this. Most people have problems with read/write permissions, again, that's not my problem. Data just won't move when copying sometimes. All machines are running win7 ultimate and avast 5. The laptop with this issue is a Toshiba e205, core i5, 4gigs ram, atheros ar8152 ethernet. Should also mention that I don't have a problem with other traffic on this connection such as internet or like I said accessing shared files in explorer. They just won't copy. I've tried copying from this machine using a desktop and copying to a desktop from the laptop (yes, I have read/write permissions, not a permissions issue). Any help, please!

I have a subfolder under C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu on my desktop that I want to copy to the same folder on a laptop which is part of my home network. I've explicitly set the shared properties of ...Start Menu on the laptop to Homegroup (Read/Write). Nevertheless, when I try to copy the subfolder from my desktop to the laptop I get the message "Destination Folder Access Denied: You need permission to perform this action." How do I get "permission"?

A:Can't copy files to shared Homegroup Start Menu

Let's make sure we are thinking the same steps here: You have shared the laptop's C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu on the network and checked that the permissions on the shared Start Menu folder are set to Read/write for Homegroup? You need to do that twice: once on the folder as it is listed under Network and once where the folder is listed in C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu. As ProgramData is a system folder you might also have to set Homegroup to have the right to "traverse folder" on ProgramData.
Quite a bit of work for replacing a few files really. Why do you have to do this over the network? Can't you just copy the file and do it locally? Mind you you might still have to tweak the permission on the ProgramData folder but at least you only have to do that once......

Hello My roomate has created a folder on his desktop called "music1", and the permissions are set for full access/shared etc on his computer. I can access many other shared folders on his computer with my pc no problem. I can even listen to other music files on his computer in other shared folders. For some reason or other I cannot play his music files or copy his music files when trying to access the music1 folder on his desktop. If i'm thinking correctly the root folder must be shared to allow access to subfolders, but in this case...the shared folder (music1) is the root folder that was created on his desktop. any ideas?

Hi ! okay what happened was my emachine motherboard died. When i went and bought a new motherboard, turns out the celeron CPU wouldnt fit into new 775 socket in there. I guess there are some Celerons that were made for that one and some for an older socket. Regardless. so i had to go and buy a cheap Core 2 Duo. And what do you think ? Of course, when i plugged in my HD - Windows won't boot. cause its all new hardware. and especially since its eMachine - I dont have a XP disk to do a repair. I hear they got a mass production license... of course. Well I thought Okay, let me connect my HD to another computer i got (Vista), copy the files off it. And do a fresh format/install of Vista on it. But, I have a password set on my eMachine XP account. So now even though i have connected the HD to my Vista PC and can view the files on it - I cant copy or open them (access denied). Since my Owner account on there was password protected. How do i get around it??
Is there an utility that will let me put the password in, to unlock, to give me full access/control? I messed around with settings on here, and i'm able to change the owner and set permissions for one file at a time. I can view and copy them now. But when you talk about 1000's of files - there's noway i could go thru them one by one. It doesnt let me set permissions on a folder - thats then thing. So stuck again.

I have three computers all Win 7 Home Premium and sharing (Homegroup). Side not I also had them sharing with out Homegroup and still same issue. Also This occurs regardless if PC3 is connected via wire or wireless. Additional notes AV was also disable to rule out. That is the only thing running on PC3 and nothing is running background wise on PC1 or PC2.

PC1 can easily view contents of Shared PC2 instantly.

PC2 can easily view contents of Shared PC1 instantly.

PC3 can easily view contents of Shared PC1 & PC2 instantly.

PC1 & PC2 can not view contents of Shared PC3 instantly; it takes approximately 35 seconds to view contents of main shared folder and same for each additional sub-folder. Also if copying a file initially it takes awhile before it starts and then stars off slow around 585KB/s copying over from PC1 or PC2 to PC3 before it jumps up to around 10MB/s+. However if I copy the same file from PC3 to PC1 or PC2 no speed issues what so ever. Speeds actually get well up into 70MB/s.

Any thoughts?

When moving or renaming files I frequently get an error messages informing me that "The action can't be completed because the folder or a file in it is open in another program". This typically happens with the second or third folder I try to rename or move. Navigating away to another folder and then coming back or closing explorer and reopening it usually helps but on the second rename or move I'm back to square one. I've been reading and searching on the forum and this is what I have tried so far:

stop the windows media player network sharing service
pause indexing
temporarily disable antivirus software
used the system file checker to check integrity

all to no avail. This is without a doubt the most annoying "bug" I have run into so far as it makes it virtually impossible to get anything done or organised. Has anyone found a real solution to this problem that does not involve manually unlocking every single folder before working with it (using 3rd party software - another option I have tried. Works but slows you down a lot)?

Hi linmix, welcome to 7F!

This may seem counter-intuitive, but, go to Control Panel >Folder Options >View Tab, and make sure the first box that says "Always show icons, never thumbnails" is not checked or ticked.

Restart your machine.
Try to replicate the problem.

See if that helps.

Hi I really need some help. I have been most the day trying to solve these issues and nothing has worked. Basically I moved house couple of weeks ago and just go round to plugging my computer in and these are the issues I am having, whether they are all related I wouldn't know...

1.I can't copy and paste files , whether it's by mouse or keyboard. It seems to work on text by not files. When I try to copy and paste files it makes the noise it doe's like if you were to press an incorrect key .

2.I can't move files from one fold to another or on to my desktop.

3.I can't seem to view any pictures in windows photo viewer it just says loading all the time.

4.I went on to account settings to see if it was to do with administrative properties but I am classed as the admin anyway and even when I click on create a new user or manage user settings (anything with the admin symbol near the option) it just doe's nothing.

I Have rebooted, system restored and lots of other things that people have suggested by nothing works , even on safe mode it doe's the same and on hidden admin that i unlocked. I really am stuck. I have just done a sfc /scannow and it says it found corrupted files but couldn't fix them. I copy and pasted this from the CBS.LOG and have no clue as to what im looking for ,so wondering if anyone can help.

Hello minnie and welcome to Seven Forums.

I'm not an SFC/ SCANNOW expert but I'd suggest you run the scan 3 times from an elevated command prompt, rebooting in between each scan. It can take several scans to repair the damaged / corrupt system files.

If SFC still can't repair everything you might want to consider a Repair Install. Hopefull this will fix your currently installed Windows 7 and preserve your user accounts, personal data, programs, system drivers, etc.

I have a PC with Windows 8.1 and a Mac with Mavericks. I have a folder on the Mac that is shared with the PC. When I'm on the PC and I try to open a file that is shared by the Mac, such as an ISO file (a disk image), then I get a message saying that I cannot open the file, or the file is in use (it depends on the app/filetype). I have the same problem when I open a video file. Strangely, text files and PDF files are just fine. And if I copy any of the problematic files to the local Windows disk, then I can open them just fine.

The specific error messages are:

- AVI files opened in VLC: "Your input can't be opened. VLC is unable to open the MRL."
- ISO files opened by Windows Explorer: "Sorry, there was a problem mounting the file."

This only started happening after I upgraded to Windows 8.1 on the PC and Mavericks on the Mac. Mavericks upgraded its SMB version from SMB1 to SMB2, so perhaps that is related?
Does anyone know what the problem might be, and how I could fix it?

Thanks in advance!

A:W8.1: Can't open files on SMB folder shared by a Mac

Welcome to Eight Forums,

The upgrade seems to be an issue in your case. I'd suggest for you to download the latest driver from the manufacturer's site for your network adapter, see if that helps. I don't think that there's a way to revert your Maverick's SMB version.

Please post an update or your progress.

My XP home desktop recently died a sudden death.

Naturally, most of my photos and documents are on that computer. I pulled out the hard drive and connected it to my laptop with a USB external case. I have right-clicked the drive to select 'share' and the hand appeared under the F drive in My Computer. I am able to open files and photos in the folders of all the other users of the pc (wife and kids) but the files in 'owners documents' will not open (it has the hand under it). When I open the 'owners documents' folder, I can see the files but when I click the individual file icons, I get an error message and they will not open.

I cannot send the files elsewhere or drag to the shared folder.

I have booted my laptop to safe mode, logged in as administator, and selected full access for all users for that drive but I still cannot open.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

In the last couple of weeks my machines running Office 2003 (Excel 2003 in particular) will not open "some" spreadsheets that are stored on a shared drive on our LAN. I can e-mail the sheet to a user and they can open it. They can copy it to their local machine and open it. They can double click the item on the shared drive, cancel the operation, open Excel, then open the "recovered" version of the document. They cannot simply navigate to the shared location and click on the file to open it. Well...sometimes it will open after 30 minutes or so. Other times after a long while the Excel window just closes and the list of files on the shared drive remain on the screen. There is never an error code either.

The only commonality is that Office 2003 is installed on these machines. Operating systems are XP Pro 32 Bit and 64 Bit with SP3, and Vista Business 32 Bit SP2. All machines have atleast 2 Gig of RAM and at least Dual Core Processors running at 2.6 GHz or above. The files being opened are all about 8meg each. The file conversion utility is on all of the machines (we do run Office 2007 as well and there are no problems with the '07 machines).

I installed a trial copy of Excel 2010 on the one Vista machine and there is no problem opening the files. That points me back to thinking that it has to be something with Excel 2003. I looked at the setting "Ignore Other Applications" in Excel 2003 and the box is already unchecked on all of the machines... Read more

I work for a firm where we are heavily reliant on an Excel Shared Workbook.
We've always had problems with it, but have managed to fix these issues by using the Computer Management tool to remove users who are locking the file.

Recently however, the Computer Management isn't displaying users correctly.
For example, this morning I went to Computer Management > Shared Folders > Open Files to check who was locking the file and it only displayed one user. I looked around the office and could see at least another 5 people with this file open, including
myself, however our names were not displaying in the Open Files screen.

Can anyone help me understand why the Computer Management has stopped showing all of the users connected to the file?

At the place I work they recently implemented sharepoint. Sharepoint uses document libraries and there were some MS word docs placed.
Now on some computers these word docs open in read mode with 2 pages in the window. On other computers the word doc opens in the printer layout view (that's the one we want).

Is there a way to control the view in which a ms word doc is opened?
Its a 30 page ms word dcoc with a password to edit. Editing en viewing uses different views in word as well.

Is there anyone who could help me?

A:Controling the default view that WOrd uses to open files

hi Yoenuts,

the view that Word uses when you open an existing doc should be the same view that was in use when the doc was last saved; as you are using Sharepoint then it depends who last had the doc open (and saved).
I'm sorry but this doesn't gel with 2 computers getting different Views for the same doc, but might be a clue.

for new docs, it depends on the View in the template you use to create that new doc; the default template is Normal.dot which you can change.

I haven't used Sharepoint so maybe there is something in that that overrides.

I'm a great fan of using Word in Outline view for creating lists to help organize business tasks (I think it's one of the most powerful and under-used features of Word). I've created a set of Styles for my preferred formatting and use it for all Outline files.

I'm running Word 2000 (on a PC with Windows 98SE).

Some of the files that I've formatted and saved in Outline view will be in Outline view when I later open them, but some will open in Normal view and with those I constantly have to click to change the view to Outline every time I open them. (I don't know if this is a function of whether the file was originally created from a pre-existing Outline template -- not that that matters to me.)

Is there any way to set an existing file to open in Outline view?

I have an FTP internally that is used to host PDF & HTML files. Previously all users could log onto this FTP site and double click on any file content to have it open within the default browser. We use FTP in explorer view so each user
can set their terminals to save their passwords, hence they log straight into their root folder on the FTP - if we use the FTP list view in the browser this doesnt happen, meaning user 9999 has a long way to scroll to find their documents!

This has always worked absolutely fine until IE10 has been installed, now any user with IE10 cant open files straight from the FTP via the Explorer view. The file doesnt download, the destination file ends up at 0KB so just doesnt open in the
browser. Roll back to IE9 fixes the problem. Using Chrome as the default browser fixes the problem. Using the FTP list view also works fine (however we cant use this since it wont default to users root folder that they have access to)

Ive attempted everything i can think of without luck, its looking like we're going to have to block IE10 or switch to Chrome. Basically opening files from any FTP site (have tested others) in explorer view with IE10 installed just isnt working.
You can however copy the document to the local machine then open ok..

Any ideas, what am i missing here!?

I recently bought a second internal dvd drive, physically installed it, plugged it into the last remaining SATA port on the mother board.

When I inserted a data dvd, autoplay popped up giving me one option - to open folder to view files with Windows Explorer. When I clicked that option nothing happened.
When I insert a blank dvd, Nero opens its burning app as it is set to and I'm able to burn a dvd on that drive. Nero is also set to verify the compilation which it does with no problem.
When i reinsert the same dvd, the same option pops up with the same result - nothing.
When insert an audio cd, Winamp will play the cd but I'm not able to "open" the cd with Windows Explorer.

By trying all combinations of cables and dvd drives to make sure that both the cables and drives were working properly, I determined that whatever drive was plugged into that last SATA port would not function properly.

The only options in my BIOS that I could find referring to SATA drives was to enable or disable the SATA controller.

I'd really like to have both dvd drives fully functional and any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

There is a widely reported problem of some jpg files displaying thumbnails which cannot be opened and reported to be unrecognised or corrupt while other jpg files open normally. I think this problem may also relate to other types of files.

I have experienced this widely reported problem of image files (not all) being reported as corrupt or unable to be opened by various programs. Why some and not all? I tried so many methods to recover my images by following numerous suggestions from so many forums. None worked. Copying the so-called corrupt files to another disc and trying to open them on another computer didn't work either.

Then, I had a sneaky thought that it may have something to do with Shadow Copy services. Previously, I had tried to backup my computer, during which the process creates a shadow copy of the files to be backed-up, but the backup failed. I retried the process, but the backup failed again and reported an error while trying to read the shadow copy.

I checked the number of shadow copies on my hard disc of which there were about 6. I decided to clean up the hard disc using System Tools > Disk Cleanup > Clean up system files > More Options > System Restore and Shadow Copies > Clean up > Delete > OK > Delete Files.

Voilą !!!

All images reappeared.

First time on this forum, so I hope I chose the right category to post my problem. I just got a new laptop, and it has Vista Home Premium.

My problem.. I use a program/application called "DVArchive" (aka: DVA) for archiving my tv shows on my PC (from my ReplayTV). This application worked just fine on XP, but of course, Vista is giving me all kinds of crap.

The application IS working.. It can see my ReplayTV unit, I can access my archived shows, etc. However, Vista is giving me error messages, which are interfering with it and making it crash.

The problem has to do specifically with the applications configuration (.XML) files. I'm pretty tech saavy, but I'm not a computer expert, so I'll just cut and paste the actual error messages below. The listed pathways are where DVArchive stores it's files...

I have a Windows XP user who can open PDF files on our secondary file server (e.g. \\serverB\shares\marketing\file.pdf) but not from the main server (\\serverA\shares\marketing\file.pdf). Same with copying PDF files. He can
copy them to his desktop. from server B but not from server A. Server A is the one assigned to him because server B is being pre-seeded for DFS and is in a different office anyway.

The problem is only with PDF files. He can open and copy any other files. And it's only on his Windows XP machine. His Windows 7 machine works just fine (he can copy and open PDF files from server A).

The two servers (Windows 2016) are set up identically as far as NTFS permissions. The only difference is that server A is set up in DFS while server B is being pre-seeded before being added to DFS.

DFS namespace type is: domain (Windows Server 2008 mode).

The XP machine had no problem under server A when the DFS namespace type was Server 2000 mode, but I'm not sure that would cause the problem.

Trying to find a solution to this issue.

2 XP Media Center SP3 PCs connected via Ethernet to router. PC A has Shared Documents folder with permissions set to allow 'Everyone' Full Control. Only Windows Firewall onboard, NOD32 virus scanner. PC B can see/open files from share on PC A, but any attempts to move or copy result in error message "your current security settings do not allow this action". Both PCs have IE6, File & Print Sharing enabled and turning off Windows Firewall doesn't change anything. What else can I try? Thanks.

A:Moving/copying files from shared folder causes error

Make sure you have the permissions set on both the Security tab as well as the Sharing tab.

On the shared folder security permissions, make sure that you go to the Advanced settings and check the box that tells it to replace the permissions on child objects as well.

I have a W7 desktop and laptop.

My desktop can access shared files on my laptop just fine.

But for my laptop to access files on my desktop I have to have a password on my desktop and have it set to "password protected sharing." I guess this is not a big issue but I don't really want a password on my desktop because it doesn't go anywhere and it's another startup step...

I've tried taking the password off the laptop but that didn't help either.

If you don't want the hassle of signing into your desktop you can set it up for automatic sign in by just typing netplwiz into the run box. The tutorial below shows you how.

I've recently upgraded my windows 7 to windows 10 enterprise. I have onedrive account with files synced to cloud, before upgrading i've backed up onedrive files locally in my computer. Some of those files can't be opened after upgrade, formats include
.docx and .xlsx and .png. Most of these files were in direct onedrive main/root folder rather than in subfolders. As i can see those images in subfolders can be opened but not doc and excel files.

How can i view those files again, why have they become corrupt, what could I do in future to prevent these problems

And no amount of free-to-use scanning I have done thus far detected a virus.

Whatever virus this is, it seems to effect the amount of memory I can use slowing down my computer and causing me crashes in Team Fortress 2.

It also disabled my sound driver.

It has yet to do anything more than annoy me from what I can tell, and it may yet be a hacker.

I am running into an issue with users renaming files on a shared drive. When the users try to rename, they get the error "A file name can't contain any of the following characters: \ / : * ? < > |". However, neither the new or old filename contains
any of these characters, or any other invalid characters as far as I can determine, just alphanumeric characters and spaces. When they try to rename it again, it works without an issue.
I have found reports of this error being generated if the file path is too long, but all users are accessing this from a shared drive, and even if the share name is taken into account the file path and name are easily under 100 characters.
I have 3 users on 3 different systems reporting this issue, so I don't think it is user error.
The workstations are running Windows 7 Pro, SP1. The server is Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise, Service Pack 2.
The users are located at a remote site, and accessing the share over a site to site VPN. There are XP workstations at the site as well, that do not appear to be having the issue.
Any help, suggestions, or guidance is greatly appreciated!

Hello everyone,

I'm using a laptop (with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit installed) as a DVR and media streamer to all other devices in the house.
My TV recordings are recorded into a temporary folder and when the recording is finished the program moves the files into the My Videos folder.

The My Videos folder is shared so we can watch the recordings from the Xbox downstairs or other Windows 7 devices in the house.
This worked pretty well in the past but for some reason new recordings (or downloads) aren't shared by default anymore. All files have a small lock icon (shared with nobody) and I have to manually share new files within an already shared folder.

This is pretty annoying and takes away the convenience.

I would appreciate any tip to fix this problem to have all files in the shared folder(s) shared by default.

Thanks in advance!

A:New files aren't shared in shared folder

It's easy once you know how, just right click the C:/Video's folder and choose properties, Security tab then Advanced button, then just put a check mark where it says "Replace all Child Object Permission Entries with Inheritable Permissions Entries from this Object, then hit Apply, OK....this will fix the problem you described.

Is this your connection ?

If it is I'm surprised you haven't secured it and if it isn't do you have permission from the person paying the bill to use their connection ?

Hi gmcin99, welcome to TSG.

This is a Word setting, not an Outlook setting. Open Word and go to Office Logo/Word Options, make sure the "Popular" section is highlighted, and uncheck the box to Open e-mail attachments in Full Screen Reading view. Hope that helps.
