Solved: Unwanted Home Page.

Q: Solved: Unwanted Home Page.

I recently downloaded Babylon Translator but decided to opt out. I did a search of Cdrive
and deleted all that was found. The trouble is that when I opened Mozilla Firefox instead
of coming up with my default Home Page (which is my ISP's HP), I got a Babylon Search Engine which has been "enhanced by Google". To my mind it is a Google alias. In German to boot.
I went to Control Panel>Internet Options and my default HP is as it should be,my ISP.
I have looked all over the Control Panel,Program Files and elsewhere to no avail.
How can I get rid of this Babylon engine whose address is search.babylon.com/home.
A look in Firefox also was no good.
Please help,
Regards, brianml.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hey all,

I don't know how this happened, but I now have this default home page for some weird search portal which I don't know how to get rid of.

I can change to another page through tools->internet options then home page, but every time I restart the computer, it will go back to this default unwanted home page.

I have a feeling you need to change something in the registry, what I don't know - anyone have an idea out there or any other methods of getting rid of this.

I have tried using a few spyware detectors to no avail either.

Thanks - any comments very much appreciated

Click on the link in my signature to download Hijack This. Download it and click "Save".

It’s very important that you save it to its own folder on your hard drive, such as program files (not temporary files or the desktop), so that it can create proper back-ups and be able to restore them if necessary.

The downloaded program will be a .zip file. Extract the .exe file from it and save in the permanent folder you just created.

Click on Hijackthis.exe to launch the program.

Click the "Scan" button when the scan is finished the scan button will become "Save Log" click that and save the log.

The log should open in notepad. Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply.

DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Problem: I am unable to change my home page setting.

Operating system: Windows XP.

I have always used “Blank” as my home page setting However last week something got into my computer and changed my homepage to “searchpage.html”.

When I open up Widows Explorer instead of a blank screen I get “Searchpage”. If I type in say www.vote.com another search page is displayed with the following message:

“You try to go to the vote.com
For visit this site follow this link: HTTP://vote.com
or type in full url (including HTTP://) in the adress bar.”

I have tried to delete “C:\searchpage.html” from my C: drive but it keeps coming back.
I have also tried to use another web site for my home page but it always goes back to “about:blank”. I also have a “about” icon on my desktop that I can’t delete.

How do I get rid of this junk.

Hi paul.m, and welcome to TSG

I'm not a security expert but there are some who donate their expertise on this site. However they will want to see a copy of a "HijackThis" (HJT) log to help you properly.

If the hijack is really bad (i.e. fast) try and download startpage guard as a temporary measure to keep you on the one page and then download and run SpywareBlaster (this is a preventative to help stop further infections) and CWShredder and also check for updates on Ad-Aware and spybot to see whether you have the very latest versions.

Also, get HijackThis (HJT) and if there still problems, post a HJT log here and wait for one of the security experts to get to you.

For Spyware tools, some sites to download from are:

Hi there.
I have a machine that runs Vista. A few days ago I had become the recipient of an unwanted toolbar or web page that calls itself Mywebsearch. I say toolbar or web page because I’m not absolutely sure which of the two it is. Maybe it’s both. My normal home page is Google, and I want it to stay that way too. When I go onto the Net, my Google home page is there. But when I visit anything and return to my home page by clicking on the home icon, that home page changes to Mywebsearch. It doesn’t make any difference using the function “Make Google my home page”, because Mywebsearch overrides it.

I have gone looking on the Net for ways to remove this Mywebsearch trash, and so far they all seem to involve going to the Control Panel and removing programs called “My Web Search” and “My Search Assistant.” I cannot find these programs on the list. How the hell do I get rid of this creepy trash? (I'd really like to confront some of the creeps who create trash like this.)

Thanks for your time

This computer has Windows 7 on it. When I click to open Internet Explorer or Chrome browser, it does not go to the home page. I went to Control Panel and set the home page to http://www.msn.com, clicked Apply then OK. But when I open the browdser it stilll does not go to that home page. Internet Explorer shows nothing but a white page below the bar at the top, and Chrome goes to a Google page with boxes for different web sites such as Amazon.com.

Just purchased a new computer with Windows 7 and cannot seem to set my home page. I had a homepage on Windows XP that I had customized. (my.msn.com) but when I entered that in the URL window it brought up the following:

fiddling around I somehow retrieved my previous customized my.msn.com home page and set it as my home page. Next time I logon to the internet the uk.my.msn.com page loads. Every so often I can get the correct home page but I go through so many tries that I forget when I found it. Why do I keep getting the uk prefix that brings up the homepage with info from Great Britain? Any help is appreciated.

if it's internet explorer, tools > internet options and on the dialog box that pops up, you can just hit 'use current' (but obviously you need to be on the cbs site for that to work).

I have just had a problem with IE solved here.
Now I have another.
My IE 10 is loading with a blank homepage.
I have tried using Internet Options as is normal to fix this, but no good.
Can someone help, please?

A:[SOLVED] No Home Page

In IE - Tools - Internet options under the Advanced tab, try resetting to Default which should revert the home page to MSN and then you can re-enter your preferred home page.

If you haven't changed any settings to where the page opens with a blank page, it's possible that you've picked up a malicious add-on and booting IE without add-ons would confirm that if after it boots, you get your home page when you click on the Home page icon - but let us know how you get on with either of those should you require further assistance.

To boot IE without add-ons - go Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Internet Explorer (No Add-ons)

This morning my Win 8 IE 10 default home page (xfinity.comcast.net) comes up as a blank page. My list of favorites are still usable. My wife's computer (Win 7 IE 9) is showing normally so I know the problem is not with Comcast. I have rebooted and everything seems ok except when I start my browser I'm greeted with a blank white page.
I have also tried using Firefox (Ver 16.0.2) and I get the same blank white home page.

OK, I just want to run this one by all of you in case there's something that Microsoft Support and I missed. For the last month or so almost all of the links from my.msn.com (my former home page) have led to a "this page is not available" page, usually MSN's, but occasionally a standard IE error page. This is all links in the new, tech, entertainment and weather sections(theirs) and 2/3's of my personal links, the only exceptions being my bank log-in, one of my two credit cards, PayPal and Check Free Web. I can't get to my library links, EBay, a local TV news web site, this forum or GetSkinned. Both of the credit card pages are secure log-in sites.

I actually got an answer from support the first time I contacted the. It read:
Hello Sara,

Thank you for contacting MSN.com Customer Support.

This is Joan and I’m sorry that you are having a “the requested page is temporarily unavailable” error message upon accessing most of the links on your My MSN page.

We have also encountered the same issue on our end yesterday and we're happy to inform you that the homepage is now back to normal. The page has encountered some minor glitch a few hours ago and our Product Specialist Team has already been notified about this at once. The homepage is now back to normal and you may now start accessing it once again. We do appreciate your patience about this matter.

In the meantime, I would suggest doing some possible workaround on your computer’s sy... Read more

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted: "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.

A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning pr... Read more

I use igoogle in ie8 as my homepage. I use XP pro. in the shop, and Vista Home premium at home. Both have igoogle as home page. Both were trouble free till recently when the vista machine started changing the home page to either msn or bing. If I'm using explorer on and off all day, no problem. If I leave for a while either msn or bing will replace igoogle. I do NOT have an infection, I have scanned both machines thoroughly and they are clean. Any suggestions would be appreciated. gtwyuser

A:[SOLVED] ie8 home page changes randomly

If your preferred search engine has been changed to Bing, reselect Google and again select igoogle as your Home Page. All the "infection" connected to this problem redirect you to harmful sites which isn't happening to you, but it's worth running Ad-Aware anyway.

A:Solved: changing home page

are you using spybot, if so go to immunize & untick the 3 little boxes about changeing settings

go to http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/ , and download 'Hijack This!'.
Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log somewhere, and please copy & paste its contents to the forum.

It will possibly show issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required, so do NOT fix anything yet.
Someone here will be happy to help you analyze the results.

Both the 32-bit & 64-bit IE9 browsers fail to connect to my home page (www.msn.com). I can't access the Tools feature (not available) when trying to connect and have to add a tab then go to Tools and see that the correct home page is shown. The initial try at connecting to my home page results in the first tab showing the MSN progress wheel in motion but nothing loads and the site it shows trying to connect to is HTTP://hp.notebook.us.msn.com which is what I suspect the problem is but can't seem to change it. I've posted two .jpg's that show the problem.
