I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Can you provide a screenshot of the message to help diagnose the problem?

I have noticed in the past couple days, at various websites, such as a credit card site where I wanted to apply for a credit card, when I hit the "Apply Now" button, which is Java Script, IE gives me an "Error On Page" message in the bottom left hand information bar. When I press on that message, it gives me the following details:

Line: 1

Char: 1

Error: Object Expected

Code: O

URL: (it lists the URL of whatever site I am currently at)
Any suggestions on how to correct this. As I said, I have noticed it on a couple different sites the past few days, yet I haven't updated any of my security settings. So a) I am not sure why I am getting this message and b)I am not sure what has changed over the last week. Any suggestions for corrections would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Have you attempted to click "enable" on the Custom Security levels?
- In IE, click TOOLS
- Click INTERNET OPTIONS
- Click on Delete Files, click ok, then Delete cookies, then click ok
- Click SECURITY tab
- For both INTERNET and LOCAL INTRANET click CUSTOM LEVEL and look at your Java settings. Enable anything listed as Prompt or disable.

for java go here

look for two things
1) the following text displayed
YES!...IF YOU CAN READ THIS, YOU ARE JavaScript ENABLED!

Sorry for the bad thread title...

I should know the answer to this but for some reason I don't.

When I upgraded to Windows 7 I lost the ability to click on a contact/email/mailto address in my browser (Firefox) and have my email program (Thunderbird) open up ready to send/write an mail. In Firefox > Options > Applications mailto is associated with Thunderbird.

Can someone walk me through or provide a link to resetting this?

A:activating contact/email links

Works for me. I just changed Firefox > Options > Applications mailto to use Seamonkey (my normal browser and E-mail program) and it works.

Perhaps uninstalling then reinstalling Firefox will fix it?

Links from all sources don't work any more.  New tabs open it just tries to load data.  Nothing comes of it.
Also, a lot of applications are saying that I'm not connected to the internet, but that of course is not true as I can navigate if I type in some addressed directly in to the URL bar.
I have Win 7 serv 1 running on a PC.
I have Kaspersky and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
Kaspersky says I have 3 threats: w8hook.dll , backup files 2.zip , remote access Host , all legal software that it doesn't like.  Unfortunately, it doesn't tell me what app they belong to, so I can't uninstall and I don't want to "Fix" them as they may be for an app I need.

P.S. I ran combo fix by accident first.

Hi,

OS: Windows 7.

Problem: Any links in my browser redirect to a ame.avira URL including buttons in control panel. My computer was also noticeably slow

I noticed this problem when I turned my PC on "after trial version of malwarebytes premium ended". I don't know why malwarebytes premium trial was on in my PC maybe I forgot I turned it on. after which I noticed all links will proceed to the ame.avira URL. I searched on google and found it might be a virus. After a long time deciding I tried to system restore my PC. But when I did that I had the Blue Screen of Death. when I rebooted my PC, I decided to undo the System Restore. but when PC was turned on, it said the undo of system restore was not successful (I think I read a message that it was because of a security program? I am guessing it was my firewall as it prompted that system restore will change settings on my browser when the error message popped up). I did this like 2-3 times as I didn't know why I was doing that. I think it was at this step taken that I noticed that the malware is not affecting my PC, but still I decided to remove it. after which I was googling "ame.avira redirect" and saw one forum post in BC. I did what was posted there, specifically MiniToolBox, AdwCleaner and Junkware Removal Tool.

By the time I read that it is not advisable to do these fixes without professional help, I am now too late. gladly my PC is doing well right now. But still I can't shake... Read more

Hi, I'm having a problem wherein my browser either fails to link to sites (mostly) or my search results will send me to pages of sponsored links. I'm running XP and this first started happening with Internet Explorer.

I got some message (sorry I can't quote it verbatim) telling me I could be infected with something. I immediately started running my Ad-Aware, SpyBot, CCleaner. They all said they found potentially dangerous things and took care of them, or so I thought.

Pressed for time, I just started using Firefox, which worked for a while, but it would eventally do the same thing. So, I'd run the programs again, and start all over again.

Today, I have time to finally try to post a Hijack This log. I started following the directions and, using Internet Explorer, cannot get to the site to download DDS. It says "cannot display the page". Running a connection check turns up no problems. I tried Firefox, and it's giving me a message that Firefox is already running--which it isn't.

I've now re-started my computer for about the 10th time today and need some advice. Please, oh generous and knowledgable people, help me... Thanks.

P.S. I also find that Internet Explorer can't get to my email (Comcast) or some other sites I frequent, unless I go into the history and find the page. When I click that, it works.

Is anybody here knows how to fix it?

In Word, you need to Insert / Hyperlink, that will make the copied data a link. Same with Excel.

A link is just text unless it has the right attributes assigned.

In one of my recent posts there was some confusion about the need for activating XP Pro. Having previously been told that I did not need to activate my XP Pro, others were telling me that I definately did. This concerned me, so I decided that I better look into this more deeply and came up with this information which I hope may help others in future.

If you bought the full boxed version of WinXP Pro - that one doesn't need
to be activated. The OEM one would ask for activation the same as
WinXP Home does ( even if you buy the full boxed one of that ).

If you got WinXP Pro along with the PC and a CD then that too wouldn't
ask for activation as it's under a Volume Licence Key and that will be
hard coded into the CD. Dell CD's are like that, even the WinXP Home
ones - using that also doesn't ask for activation.

A:Does Xp Pro Need Activating?

as it's under a Volume Licence KeyThe only places I have heard of uses for volume licence keys are in businesses and schools where large numbers of computers are managed. We have such in our school district. I am not sure of the support levels, but our volume Office licensing exempts support due to the cost of purchase.

Hey,

I own a computer that came with Windows 8 preinstalled (OEM version, key embedded in BIOS).
Today I've decided to reinstall Windows, mainly because the upgrade from the Marketplace made it a bit laggy. As a student I have access to the MSDNAA versions, so I downloaded the 8.1.
Now I have two keys I could use -- the one that came bundled with the computer and the other I just "bought". I don't wanna waste the unused key for no good reason, so I was wondering if I could somehow activate 8.1 with the embedded key from 8.

Thanks

I bought a new Asus laptop today with Windows 7 Home Premium preinstalled, and my cousin (who supposedly happens to be a computer expert) formatted everything and set up Windows 7 Ultimate along with Ubunbtu.

I have downloaded the drivers and everything works fine, but Windows won't activate using the key at the back of the laptop. My cousin has also dumped an ISO image of the disk he used to install (Windows 7 Ultimate SP1, he told me) on my hard disk. Other than that, I have no Windows installation disks or anything.

How can I use my key to activate Windows? I don't need the Ultimate edition, Home Premium will be just fine.

A:Activating using OEM key

You can't use a key from a different version on Ultimate, OEM or otherwise.

Was the installation legitimate or was it something that's been pirated?

All you can do is either purchase Ultimate, or restore with the Asus master DVD...

I have an older drive with windows 8.1 on it, I have copied the key from the OS. This drive was never updated to w10 but is a fully legal activated version of w8.1

I have just put together a new system and figured I could do a clean install of 586 w10 and just plug in the w 8.1 key and be all good for activation. Not so fast, activation will not accept the key.

MS tech on chat line said I would probably need to install old drive, fully update it and then upgrade to w10. That's a boat load of updates considering this drive was taken out the first moment w10 became available.

My question is I guess is there no less painful way to accomplish this?

The version of Windows 7 which came with your Alienware Laptop is OEM and the OEM license is non-transferable. Dell/Alienware Windows 7 OEM can only be installed on hardware which has the Dell/Alienware Windows 7 OEM license.
Note: Dell/Alienware Windows 7 Pro OEM can be installed on supported new Dell/Alienware hardware which shipped with Windows 8.1 Pro OEM or Windows 10 Pro OEM by use of OEM Downgrade Rights.

I got a virus and had to format the computer and start a fresh. When it was taking me through the installation it asked for the key so I tried to type in the one that was used before but it wouldn't let me. So I just skipped that step and carried on using windows. Now its asking me to activate windows and when I try to input the code that was used when I first bought the computer it says "Unacceptable Character" when I type the first number. Why is it doing this and how can I sort it out? Thanks in advanced.

Apologies, I'm sure this question has been asked quite a number of times, so please bear with me. ^^'

Anyway, after becoming the victim of several viruses the past few days, I opted to finally pay up for a copy of Norton anti-virus and dump the free versions of ZoneAlarm and AVG. Suffice to say that in between that it involved 2 fresh installs of Windows XP and one Repair.

The first two times, under Service Pack 1 (which is contained on my own Windows XP Prof. CD) Windows allowed the activation via internet. So, at this point, using windows updater, I downloaded all important drivers and updates. Everything fine so far. Then, upon successfully downloading and installing Service Pack 2, and being prompted to do a restart. My internet stopped working, i.e. the network was not being picked up despite everything being connected right.

So, I called my uncle down, who's good with these things, and he suggested it might be something to do with my installation not recognising the network, i.e. the CD being Service Pack 1.
Anyway, he brought his own copy of Windows XP down (SP2) and used the repair function in the Windows installer. And, everything was working good. Internet was back up. Norton installed etc.

Anyway, I thanked him and he went home. Now, the problem:

When I go into Windows activation, I get to the part where it's 'Checking for Connectivity' where at this point it will tell me that Online activation can not be completed at this time, and that I have X d... Read more

There MAY be a difference in license types - one may be OEM and the other FULL (or Upgrade). You would be best phoning MS and getting the activation sorted out. I don't know who suggested to you that phoning them was a lot of trouble (because they are WRONG). If you are having activation problems then MS are the people to talk to.

Hello awesome volunteers of BleepingComputer.com!

My computer is an Asus G51VX, Vista 64 bit, any other tech specs just ask me.

I was browsing the web on Sunday afternoon at my in-laws (out in the country, unlocked wi-fi) when Google Chrome opened up some extra tabs I hadnt asked for. Then I realized the links I'd ask for were being redirected away to some other place entirely. I remember one of the domains seemingly doing the redirecting was "expandsearchanswers.com". I noticed I could hit back once or twice and I would be at the link I wanted, but it still freaked me out a bit.

I tried running Malware Bytes but it wouldnt update itself, it gave me an error saying it couldnt contact the update server. I ran the program anyway with the outdated definitions (60 days old it said) and it found nothing. Both a fast scan (2-3 mins) and a regular scan (30 mins) found no problems. I deinstalled chrome and wiped the browsing history (I figured why not since I have my account synced with another computer at work... let me know if it might be infected, though no problems yet), and switched to Mozilla with nothing imported. ... The links were STILL getting hijacked.

I then ran AVG full scan and another round of MBAM and nothing was found. I didnt touch my laptop much on Monday. On Tuesday night I found bleepingcomputer.com forums, saw what great and THOROUGH work was being done here, basically tried to get setup to do this post, reading up on procedures and down... A few days ago I most probably got infected with malware. Suddenly my Firefox was (and when checking also Chome and IE) showing advertisement all over the place. In addition, there appear some words in the regular text of web sites (no matter which site, also yours) that are printed bold like this "bitdefender" and when you run over it an advertisement appears. But also when I move my pointer without clicking over the topic "Forum Rules" on the site where I am typing in this post, an ad appears for a few seconds. Then, when you click on a link on a site, either a new window opens with a completely other address which is an add again or the tab you are on opens another site. When you close this you come back to the original site and sometimes you see the link you originally intended to reach or sometimes you must click again and then it goes. There are also combinations of these problems so it is getting worse from time to time. Sometimes, when you want to fill in a open field (say a search subject) or even click just on a space on a page which does not have a link at all, you are also immediately directed to a site with ads even before you have typed in one letter in the search field. That is scary when you want to enter a bank account for instance. Now, I have run Malwarebyte several times, JRT several times, HitmanPro same, bitdefender and the whole lot. I installed Adblock Plus and I also have Kaspersky anti Virus and they all find infections and repair or destroy... Read more

Hello,
As with many other people, when I do a google search and get results, my initial click takes me to some ads, then i can hit the back button and continue with my searching.
Also, some webpages i visit have some keywords pick out as links to ads and the such.
I will now post all the logs you require:

When I click on a google link or even a bing link my page gets redirected to places like spyware scanner and fake search engines. I know its a virus or some sort of malware/ Spyware. It only takes control on links.

If you type something in the address bar or sometimes just open it in a new tab your fine. This happens in both IE and Firefox. I am running windows 7 and I have had no other problems. I have scanned the computer with spybot and avg 9 both in safe mode and in normal mode still nothing. Here is my hijack This! log.

I am not sure what happened but
everytime i try clicking a website page link or someones email address in MS Outlook, I get a message telling me that the setting is wrong and I must consult the system engineer. Well I guess I am that person and am not able to figure out how to turn this security feature off. I am un able to open a website link or quickly send an email in Outlook.
Any one have any ideas?

A:MS Outlook problem with website links and email links

Just speaking for me, normally I can't help people when I don't know exactly what they are running. It would help me and or help us all out a bunch if we could find out what version of Microsoft Outlook your running. All you need to do is say from which office suite your Outlook is from.....like: Office 2002, Office XP, Office 2003 or Office 2007 and so on.

After the answer, I'm sure that if not me, someone else could help you!

Hello,

I have a copy of Windows 8 Pro 32-bit. I know with Windows 7 Pro for example, if you had a product key for Windows 7 Pro 32-bit, you could use it with a Windows 7 Pro 64-bit, and vice-versa.
So I was wondering if that still held true for Windows 8. Could I install Windows 8 Pro 64-bit, with my Windows 7 Pro 32-bit product key?

Thanks in advance!

A:Activating Win 8 64-bit with 32-bit product key

Yes, still true.

Two problems really.

1. Maybe I've never noticed it before but all of a sudden I keep seeing the popup for windows 8 activating again. Just seems strange that it would be trying to activate again even though it shows activated on 6/23/2013.

2. This problem is a little different. Different computer but activation problems again. My laptop for some reason last week kept asking me to reactivate over and over again. It would say successful and then I would go look and it was needing activation when I checked. It did this 4 or 5 times and it currently says activated. This one says activated 2/19/2013

These are both Windows 8 Enterprise from my MSDN.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Josh

A:Windows 8 seems to be activating over and over

For each computer....

Please open an Elevated Command Prompt window (in Start, type 'Command' - a Command Prompt icon will appear, right-click on it, and select Run as Administrator)
At the Prompt, type

Licensingdiag.exe -report %userprofile%\desktop\report.txt -log %userprofile%\desktop\repfiles.cab

(note the spaces!)
two files will be put on your desktop -
open the 'report.txt' file in Notepad, and copy/paste the results to your response - you can ignore the repfiles.cab file for the moment, as it's only backup data

I bought a new laptop without an OS. I purchased and installed Windows8. I bought a Windows 8 Pro key, and whenever I try to activate it, it says I need a previous version of Windows in order to activate it. Any ideas on how to activate it w/out installing another OS. Note: I am willing to purchase another key so that I do not have to reinstall Windows.

A:Windows 8 not activating

If you have a valid Win 8 installation and a valid Win 8 Pro Upgrade license key then follow this tutorial and you should be good to go:

I got my Samsung Series 9 repaired and, as a result of some component changes, Windows 8 is no longer activated. Can I use a copy of Windows 8 Pro (which is intended to allow Windows 7, Vista and XP users to upgrade to Windows 8) to activate Windows 8? In other words, will the product key of an upgrade package allow me activate Windows 8, despite it not being an upgrade (my computer came with Windows 8 pre-installed).

A:Activating Windows 8

In this case your first point of contact should be Samsung Support, if you contact them and explain the situation they should organise activation of the pre-installed OS. Microsoft may be an option though pre-installed OS is officially the responsibility of the OEM.

It may be possible to "upgrade" using a retail copy of pro, but then of course you would lose the use of the pre-installed copy that you have already paid for

I recently installed a new drive, and need to activate windows again. However, when I go to the wizard, it tells me that the # of registrations have been exceeded, and it doesn't let me. So i clicked on activate by phone, and it doesn't say any #s. It says "Toll free #: (blank)". So I can't get a phone #. Anyone know a site for the #s for activation? The #s are based on location. Thanks.

Let me make this as short as possible. I acquired an old sony laptop with XP on it. The backup copy was on the hard drive. After reinstalling XP the pc did not work. Rather than fight with it I took out a disc I had from an old retired pc of mine and loaded that windows onto the laptop.. This was a Dell disc that I own that has Vista.. (all my documentation was tossed years ago) The laptop is running great. I have 14 days to activate and no number. I tried all sorts of things online from key finders to even number that were published with no luck. I called microsoft and they are happy to take $45 to activate it.. I have owned at least 8 computers all with bought windows along with this disc I used... but now I don't know what to do. Buy a new copy off ebay.. and even if I were to do that would I still need to install that copy wiping out all I have done on this pc to date ?

Hi,

In several sites, such as Amazon, as I move from page to page, the browser cookies are either erasing or being turned off. I have tried putting the privacy and security levels both on low, turning off my firewall, etc., but with no success. Is there a way to reinstall Internet Explorer or should I consider using the Mozilla browser, if you think this is a browser problem. In another example, my preferences in Google are reset to default every time I restart my computer.

Thanks

So my friend was using my computer (which did not have a 'genuine' windows, this is another problem) and he downloaded and installed some kind of software on my computer which was supposed to activate my windows. But a couple days later, when i turn on my computer it boots up normally up to the part where it is supposed to connect to the wifi. There is a spinning wheel above the wifi symbol, the security essentials is turned off and nothing i click on does anything. I tried to restored to a previous restore and nothing doing. I tried to removed the hackware in safemode, but the removed button becomes faded and nothing happens. I tried the repair system and again nothing. This sounds like the end of my hard drive. What do I do?

A:Activating windows

I do not know what your friend did but you do not need to download software to activate Windows. Those who do are typically attempting to use some type of crack or keygen program to circumvent Windows activation which is not only illegal but a security risk. I recommend that software be removed and you contact Microsoft if you are receiving messages about not having genuine windows.Microsoft maintains multiple Product Activation Centers worldwide to provide assistant and telephone support for activation issues. The correct telephone number is based on product and location.USA users can call Microsoft directly at (866) 234-6020 or 1-800-MICROSOFT (642-7676):Global Customer Service phone numbersMicrosoft Answer Desk phone support servicesMicrosoft Support: Phone Number, Live Chat, Email ID, Useful LinksOther activation support links:* Get Help Activating Microsoft Windows* How To Activate Windows 7 via Phone Activation ‘slui.exe 4' Client* Activate Windows on this computer* Support for Microsoft Product Activation problems* Windows 7 activation error: invalid product key* Windows 7 activation error: 0xC004F061* Windows 8 activation error: 0xC004F061* Get help with Windows 8 activation errors
