Spectre 360 130-4005dx battery ran down, won't power up.

Q: Spectre 360 130-4005dx battery ran down, won't power up.

My laptop would not charge the battery anymore, and and I've noticed many others in the forums with the same problem. I've tried to do a hard reset, though couldn't find any actual documents on how to reset my model of the spectre 360 (13-4005dx) so I'm not sure I'm doing it right. (the hard reset doc seems to be for other models) But so far, what I've tried has not worked, and all I get is the 3 quick blinks of the light when trying to turn it on. I went to Best Buy and verified that my power adapter works, so it is most definitely the laptop, not the adapter. Also they had a working adapater there and verified it would not take a charge. It seems like so many people have this problem but not sure who at HP to talk to to get it fixed, or what number to call. I really couldn't find any on the site. I'm not under warranty anymore but really need some help. If I can't get it fixed, I guarantee I will never buy another HP product again, and since I am the one in the family and group of friends that knows about PCs and gets asked by everyone else in the family what to buy, I'll make sure to tell them to never buy an HP. There is too much competition out there with other companies that seem to want to solve customer problems, especially when they are common ones. This one seems to common they should be fixing it without question or charge. So what to do? Who to contact? -SnorkyMN

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I nocited the battery low message  and pluged the lap top in, and it did not show charging.   So double checked the power, pluged into a different outlet, same result no charge.  So got the electrical tester and check the charger and its good.  So then I come here and see what it might be and I am hoping it not the mother board... that is affecting the charging.   I check the reciver for the charging connection and it is solid and has no movement what so ever so I dont feel it would be that connecton shorting out.   I have had this computer for 15 months so I am out of Warnetee but for the price this computer should have alonger than 15 month life span.  Why would the charging the battery need to run throught the monther board?   HP I need a responce and need to get this resolved so I can get back to work.  This device had been a great little computer.  It looks like new condition and has never been droped, beat or dinged in any way that I am aware of.  This seams to be a design issue and I would appreshate any responce or help that you could provide. Cory Cooper

Does the charge LED light up and change  from white to amber? Does it not light up at all? If it does not, that means that the power adapter has failed and should be replaced. You cannot test the power adapter with a meter unless you are able to put a suitable load in series with it that simulates being connected to a battery .  Using the multimeter's voltage setting will not show that the charging capacity (in millamps) is within specifications.

I bought my Spectre x360 13-4005dx computer late June 2015 from Best Buy. I have used it infrequently but it has been working fine with no errors. The battery was fully charged and it was connected to a wall plug. I was copying files from one USB hard drive to another USB hard drive. I left it unattended and when I returned, the copying was completed but the computer was turned OFF. I tried the power button many times but it does not do anything. The little LED that indicates if the battery is charging or charged, when connected to a wall plug, is always OFF.The keyboard LED is always OFF. I left it plugged in and tried again after few hours with no luck... Is there anything to do except to return it or take it to service?

Just contacted support about this issue and they said, there is no recall on this computer for  this issue and they will charge over 400 dollars to repair it.  With all the laptops/desktops I have purchased from HP, I am absolutely disgusted with their response.  This is clearly a faulty design causing the issue.  I will never buy a HP product again.  1 problem in 20 years of buying HP products and ZERO support.

I purchased an HP Spectre x360 13-4005dx from Best Buy July 2015. I was just out of warranty when it died with the same symptoms as described in this Forum. I was shocked for how many similar entries were posted which indicates an HP design problem and not a normal failure due to usage. I am very disappointed in HP not taking responsiblity for the bad design of this motherboard and as mentioned in previous posts, extend the warranty to cover this problem.  I have a very similar burn as the image posted on this forum https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Operating-System-and-Recovery/HP-Spectre-x360-Haywire-RIP/td-... and I have seen many others just by searching for HP Specter x360 will not turn on. Thsi is the last HP notebook that I will ever buy. HP will suffer due bad publicity and non existing support of bad products they keep putting on the market.

I have a serious screen failue that occurs when I use my laptop. It does not happen when I am hooked up to my flat screen on my desk via HDMI with the display set only to the projected screen 2.A large white line shows up on the screen from top to bottom and the computer freezes up as the screen gets dimmer and eventually goes blank.I am convinced this is hardware and probably the hinges.  No matter what I do, reboot etc, the problem comes quickly back and begins with flickering.  If I reboot with an HDMI and use the big screen #2 rather than the laptop's screen there is never any problem.I am well within warranty.HELP!  I can send a picture of what the screen looks like when it fails.

I have just had my HP Spectre 13-v002tu computer returned from repair in Singapore.  The on-line help did a barrage of tests and the battery was replaced.  Personally, I didn't think that it was a battery problem and that was confirmed when I found out this morning that from a full charge last night when I switched off completely (I think they call it "shutdown" in the US) that the battery had discharged 70% of its charge when switched on this morning.  Somewhere the charge is leaking and I suspect that it is back through the connected devices that I leave connected when I use the computer in desktop mode.  I have an external mouse, keyboard, printer, CD drive, external speakers and a 3TB mains powered portable drive.  I would have thought that "shutdown" would mean that the USB C connectors are not energised? When I switch off everything I mean that all mains power is cut to the computer and all connected devices.  There are no batteries in any connected devices that maybe using the battery charge. Many people have the same problem but no one seems to have investigated this problem.  Whilst I was happy with the HP technical service and rapid response, they didn't seem to know about the problem even though the forums are full of these issues. Is there anyone out there who is researching this issue?  Is it a problem with Windows 10?  I think not because my little Asus notebook for all its faults doesn't exhi... I have a strange issue. I have a Lenovo T60 laptop and I am experiencing problems with the power management/power guage.

It will often show the battery not installed (power gauge is a greyish-white color with dashed lines) or it shows a red X. It does not matter if I am on AC power or on Battery power, it will show the full range of power, battery level, not installed, or an error.

I have searched Lenovo's site and I seem to remember seeing an FAQ about this, but now that I need it, I cannot find it.

What can I check or do to stop this? While it is annoying, I am not sure if I am having a battery problem or not. I did check my battery on Lenovo's site to see if it was recalled and it is not.

I do appreciate any help that any one can give me.

Thanks!

After my friend's laptop wouldn't run on battery power OR charge the battery I tried many "fixes."

Shockingly none worked that I found.

Only one thing worked for me to my surprise.

A last ditch effort was to open up the laptop (sony pcg-81114L) and disconnect the cmos battery for a few minutes to reset the CMOS.

To my surprise, when powered on, the battery instantly showed it was charging AND when removing the power plug the battery POWERS the laptop now! (and I'd thought I was wasting my time.)

Worked with an off brand battery also.

Many times this has saved many computers that have odd "unsolvable" things wrong with them.

Surely someone else has done this also but I haven't seen it posted anywhere to my knowledge.

Thank GOD for bringing the idea to remembrance!

Yesterday my laptop suddenly refuse to get power from AC source. Following the instructions on the web, I first assumed AC adapter faillure. But the adapter works well. The tiny LED next to the power inlet went off, although Windows catches the AC adapter driver and seems working. The last job I did before the problem was updating the BIOS, which is instructed by HP Support program.  I bring it to the service center, but they refused to take it since it's not a Korean-sold model (I bought it from the other country).Quite annoying because they did not take any questions at all, just repeating 'we don't accept that, go away'. Can anybody give me a solution? The battery is only half-filled, and after it dries I think it would be turned into a piece of brick.I really need a help. Thankyou in advance!

My new HP Spectre get very very very hot on the underside when operating for only a short time.  In addition, it has lost battery life.  It now only gets about 4 hours before needing a recharge.  The documentation indicates a battery life of 11+hours.  This is not the case.  The product is only about 2 months old - still under warranty.   Is this a common issue - I have seen reviews of it running warm but this is so hot it appears something is wrong.  In addition, is the loss of battery life related?  And how do we get the battery issue resolved under warranty.

I too would also like to find an external battery pack and/or cable that can charge the x2. Although the Spectre x2 has relatively poor battery life, I was willing to purchase it as it charges via USB-C and I incorrectly assumed any high-power USB charger or external battery pack would charge it. I've tried a number of USB chargers and battery packs with a Belkin USB-A to USB-C charger cable and have had no luck charging the Spectre x2.

If only. I have that model and HP has made it very difficult to use anything but an HP power supply. Would you have access to a car when you were camping? The best way to do it is to use a power inverter from the cigarette lighter of the car and the P power supply. Very difficult to use any other power source.

I recently bought my Spectre x360 and overall I am very happy with my purchase. However, I am a bit concerned with battery life. For my version (i7 processor and UHD screen) I am only achieving about 5 hours usage from each charge. I had expected nearer 9 hours from the adverts for the model. Reading messages from other users I seem to find that to achieve nearer 9 hours i should lower screen brightness to about 50%. Surely the main reason for buying a notebook with a UHD-4K screen is for the display to be bright especially when watching videos (Nertflix, iPlayer etc).Any suggestions about improving battery life please

Why HP's the odd duckIn the chart above you can see there?s one vendor with a glaring-red problem: HP with its Spectre X2. Keep in mind, I?ve updated the Spectre X2 with the latest UEFI and it still won?t work with third-party chargers. Here?s why. After speaking with HP officials about the issue, it appears the company is just playing it safe. Fearing that a counterfeit or out-of-spec charger could make the touchscreen or audio subsystem flaky, HP has limited the access non-certified chargers have to the device. For now, HP exec Mike Nash told us, only ?overnight? charging, or charging while the device is off, is supported.?Are we being too conservative?? Nash asked. ?I don?t think so.?HP is committed to USB-C?it already has four or five devices that use it for charging. The company just doesn?t believe the spec is ready for interchangeability yet.Lee Atkinson, a distinguished technologist at HP who?s been leading the effort to corral PC makers around USB-C, said the upcoming Power Delivery 3.0 spec should solve many of the outstanding issues, such as how much voltage to supply and how to control which way power flows between two devices. Atkinson said OEMs all agree it has to be done correctly and with group consensus.

I have owned a Spectre x2 12 myself and then I purchased one for my wife. I also recommended this system to my uncle who bought one. I must say that I have been happy with the performance and build quality of these units. However, there is one glaring issue with them that HP seems to be totally ignoring and in my opinion it is a deal breaker. I have since sold mine and am looking to do the same with my wife's system. I have recommended to my Uncle that he should do the same thing. What is this one glaring problem? The system discharges the battery even when the system is completely turned off. We have tried all the recommended things on all the HP and 3rd party forums to fix the issue but nothing has worked. We have tried everything from turning off fast boot and USB charging in Bios, to updating the Bios and all the drivers, to making sure no WiFi dongles are connected to the device when turned off, and even separating the keyboard from the device when it is turned off. Nothing has solved the problem. On one forum for an HP spectre x360 there was a fix offered which allowed the user to update the M.2 hard drive bios which fixed the problem the same problem for those systems but no such fix is offered by HP for the Spectre x2 12. I suspect that this system along with many other HP systems are suffering from the same issue of the M.2 not completely shutting down when the device is turned off which allows it to slowly discharge the battery. Imagine the frust... Read more

When I got my Spectre about 6 mo ago I go 8-10 hrs on a charge when doing word processing and e-mail.  However that recently dropped to less than 4 hrs.  After spending several hours with HP Support, we could find nothing obviously wrong with the machine.  A look at the Task Manager CPU useage revealed nothing extraordinary and the HP Battery check indicated the battery was "ok".  In preparing to send the machine back to HP, I decided to first try to reimage it, i.e. wipe the disk and reload the operating system.  HP makes this easy to do.  Once the new image was installed I methodically  loaded each of my major applications one-by-one and retested the battery life after each install.  I now get 8-10 hrs of battery life. During this process I did not update any of the drivers.  This suggests that one of the recent driver upgrades is the culprit to my battery problem so I'm now much more cautious in accepting these.  I always do a restore point before proceeding and test the battery life afterwards. Testing the battery life can be done in several ways.  The key is consistency.  The method I use is to edit the power settings so that the screen stays on and the machine remains awake.  I then just let it sit for a while.  I typically see a loss of 10% of battery power per hour.  Prior to the reimage I saw 25-30% reduction per hour.

The battery life on the Spectre x360 that I got two months ago is absolutely dissapointing. Running the default installation of Windows, I'm lucky to get 3.5 hours of battery life using the HP Recommended powerplan while browsing the internet on a stable WiFi network. I have been working with this computer for two months now and after two hours I have to plug it in. Is there anything that I can do to fix this issue or would my best bet be to contact HP directly? I bought this laptop solely based off of the claims that it could get up to 12 hours on battery and the fact that I'm lucky to see a third of that is upsetting.

I bought the Spectre x360 to replace my HP Envy.  The promised 12+ hours of battery life have resulted in only 4 hours.  VERY disappointing since, I've chosen to buy this product over MAC which delivers 10 hours.  I have checked the forum and there is no solution to this and has been going on for at least a year.  Why is HP not delivering?  I spent $1400 for something that was promised and not delivered.  Can anyone help?  Can I send this back and get a refund? I can't find help anywhere.  LK

Hi,  I was not super sure as to where to post this so I put "Notebook Video, Display and Touch".So I bought this new HP Spectre x360 about a week ago during the cyber sales in preparation for classes at University next semester as I was wanting something small, lightwieght, and with a long lasting battery that could get me though the shcool day. I love everything about this laptop except it seems to have a very short battery life. When I bought it, all the tech reviews and the official HP website claimed an 11 to 12 hour battery life, however I cannot seem to get more than around 4 or 5. Perhaps the battery is bad?I do not know too much about computers so I had my brother help me choose the model. I have the i7 6500u, 16gbs of ram, and a 512gb SSD. My brother said with these specific components, the battery life could be effected a little bit but was under the impression that it would still be able to serve me at least 8 hours while at school. Should I contact HP support about the battery life problem? Thank you for any advice you can give me.

I bought a brand new hp spectre x360 last December 2016 because I was amaze of the features being advertised at Best Buy Station Square Burnaby, CA store and they order it for me. When I got my order which I'm expecting it's brand new product, however after 2 weeks of using it I observed that the battery life has short period of time to think that I fully charged it. Because of these I return my laptop in the store to give complain regarding this matter. The store took it for repair and until now it's almost a month I haven't received any update regarding the status of my laptop. And I'm paying for the laptop which I haven't use. Kindly address this issue and hoping to hear from HP company soon.

hello, I have a brand new HP Spectre x360, and am very happy with it. However, the battery is getting drained when the laptop is shut-off (not in sleep mode, but really shut-off, by using the windows start button). From 100% to 90% in one week time, and even down to 0% if left for some weeks.I'm wondering if this is due to a problem with the battery (or some other manufacturing issue), or if itīs caused by some kind of setting that causing the computer to not completely shut down for example. Could the farst start-up have anything to do with it? Is there any setting I should change?  Would really appreciate your help as this doesn't seem normal for a completely new computer... Thanks!

I have a RavPower external battery pack that doesn't have a connector tip for my Spectre X360 laptop.  Does anyone know the size of the tip on the end of the power adapter, or better yet, where to buy one that will work?

Brand new Spectre X360.  Battery drains 0.8% per  hour while Spectre is shutdown.  There is ZERO battery drain of spouse's Surface notebook.  I have disabled fast start up.  USB ports are not in use.  This is a serious problem as I leave my notebook off for several days and could drain to zero possibly damaging battery.

I know this question has been asked already but I too need a solution to the HP Spectre x360's very, very poor battery life. I struggle to manage 2 hours on this, with brightness at the max (I need it like that). I've seen other people managing 5-6 hours and thats all I really need. If someone could tell me how they managed to get that, I'd be very grateful. Thanks in advance!
