Having a problem getting Wireless Laptop Internet connection working

Q: Having a problem getting Wireless Laptop Internet connection working

I spent about an hour going through similar posts here but didn't really find what I needed. I'm hoping this is just something stupid on my part.
Here's the deal:
My sons laptop crashed. I did what I could to recover it but, no good. Was able to recover his important files (from help I got here) so I picked up a new harddrive (WD60gig) and installed WINXP Pro fresh.

My desktop is hardwired from a Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Broadband router that is connected to cablevision via a 3Com U.S. Robotics modem.

The problem now is trying to get an internet connection on the laptop.

Prior to the crash, he was able to connect using the wireless router.

I've tried going directly to the laptop from the modem just to get an internet connection but I haven't got that to happen yet.

Do I need to install the 3com modem software on the laptop?

I just installed Norton Antivrus 2005 on the Desktop.

How do I check for Firewall issues?

Any help is appreciated. Even just a pointer to a good article might do it.

Preferred Solution: Having a problem getting Wireless Laptop Internet connection working

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Having a problem getting Wireless Laptop Internet connection working

So Your laptop has a wireless network card? Install the drivers for that and make sure it is working, then on the computer with the router, the laptop card should show up, try to establish that first.

Hi there, im new to the forums and i've got a problem that's been a real pain for me lately.
I've got a wireless connection in my house going through a Linksys WRT54GC router and also a wired connection with Cisco gateway (only 1 laptop uses it). About 1 month ago some strange things began to happen with the wireless connection, my PC seems not to be able to connect unless I reinstall the protocols and it's really annoying to do that every time I run my PC. Also, the wired connection stopped working (probably because of cable being broken) but it requires a router restart 90% of the time when I want to connect the laptop (that used to connect through cable) to the wireless network. The 2nd laptop has an issue mentioned in the title, the LAN works but it can't connect to the Internet through the router. Ipconfig /all shows that DHCP isn't working, there's no default gateway and DNS seems to be wrong. Could that all be related to router not being updated for a long time? I tried reinstalling drivers, unistalling and installing back network card and doing most of the things mentioned in similar threads but nothing seems to work. I know it all looks very silly but I can't do anything about it, at least now - I don't have access to any router settings and can't update it.
Every bit of help is appreciated. I can paste all the information needed from all computers.

I have a laptop that I cant get to connect to the internet. My home wireless router (and various neighbours routers) are visible from the laptop but it will only connect with "limited Connectivity" and states the network is "unidentified". When I connect direct to the router with a cable I can connect to the net fine. I have recently restored the laptop to factory settings to try to fix with no success and every forum I have been on hasn't helped so far. I have downloaded the latest network adaptor driver too. I am running Vista and currently have no virus software loaded to get in the way if it helps.

Any help would be much appreciated as I am at the end of My tether!

Hey, I've been having this problem ever since coming back home from university. My laptop doesnt seem to be able to stay on the internet very well. I'll be randomly browsing, downloading, whatever, and then suddenly it'll stop. The wireless icon on the taskbar comes up with a "!" and says no internet access. The wireless connection is still full strength at this point, but no internet. What I don't understand is that the internet connection to the main computer (which is wired) works fine all the time; the internet connection works on the other wireless laptops in the house; and at uni I have no problems with the wireless internet. I don't know where the problem can be. Turning off the wireless card and turning it back on works for a few minutes or so, restarting the computer works for a bit longer. It usually works just long enough for me to get the false hope that it's fixed itself... I have a Sky broadband connection using a Netgear Super Wireless Router UOM which connects perfectly with my wireless enabled Toshiba laptop.

The problem has been trying to get my PC to talk to the router. I bought a Belkin Wireless G USB adapter (F5D7050)a few weeks ago and with some help from Belkin's helpline eventually got it working. However, within a few days it stopped working and after many long and expensive phone calls to Belkin's support desk, ended up with a new USB Adapter (same model) but which still will not connect. I've been battling with this for the last two weeks and have given up on Belkin support.

My laptop continues to work perfectly with the router. However, the Belkin Wireless Monitor dialogue box shows it's connected to the network (it shows the SSID), Encryption: TKIP, Link speed 36 Mbits/sec. Signal strength and link quality are at 60%. The IP information section in the same dialogue box shows Disabled under DHCP status while there is nothing next to current IP, subnet mask, default gateway or DNS server. The link information box shows there is a link between the computer and the router, but no link between router and internet.

I have a Lenovo laptop 3000 N100 running Windows Vista Home Premium, Service Pack 1, Intel(R) Core(TM) Duo CPU, T2350 @ 1.86GHz 1.87GHz, 2GB RAM.

The laptop has never before had issues connecting to the wireless home networking system. The 2 desktops in the home are working fine and connecting to the internet.

On Sunday, 10/4, I shut down my computer. Because I got a new job, I didn't start it up again until Friday, 10/9. No one touched the computer during that time because I locked it away. But when I turned it on, I was surprised to discover my internet connection not working. I right clicked the wireless networking icon and tried "Diagnose & Repair". Windows cannot find a problem.

I contacted my internet provider and after an hour on the phone they figured it was my computer but suggested booting up in Safe Mode w/ Networking and plugging in the Ethernet.....sure enough, that worked, but only proved that it's not my internet provider. They suggested restoring to previous date (10/1), which I did, and that changed nothing.

I am not aware of any bad updates but am wondering if that is the problem since this is so out of the blue. Also, when I try accessing other programs within my computer, like Device Manager, it freezes up and never opens.

I appreciate any and all help you can provide. Thank you!

Hi! I wonder if anyone can help me with a computer issue I've recently been having. The 'Wireless Network Connection' on my laptop doesn't seem to working properly. When I boot it up I can see the Wirless network icon is animated in the task bar and after what seems like ages sometimes I get a connection. When I check the strength sometimes it indicates it's good if I'm practically sitting on top of the router, this seems to eventually degrade to low until finally the connection drops. 'Repairing' with XP repair facility doesn't work. I can forget about getting a connection if I move further away from the router. At the moment I'm relying on using an ethernet cable snaking across the dining room, which isn't really practical with a toddler and a dog racing around. Recently a friend put a bigger HD in and before this it was working fine, so I suspect that it may be due to this. I think it's due to the wirles... Read more

I've connected to the internet using an Airport Extreme, on my HP laptop (one year old), running Vista. It has worked fine for a year, and wireless connection is working on all other computers in the house, but suddenly will not work on the HP laptop anymore.

It sees the available networks, but goes into an indefinite state of "aquiring network address," but never connects. When I plug in ethernet cable, it works.

Can you help? I have no idea why it would suddenly stop working! I tried to "repair" the connection, and it said it "could not refresh IP address."

Please help! I'm clueless.

Remove ALL the stored wireless profiles and reenter the encryption key. Also, make sure you do not have MAC filtering enabled on the router.

If that fails, remove encryption from the router and see if you can connect that way.

Update the wireless drivers on the machine to the latest available for your wireless card.

Hi all,

I have a Dell Inspriron E1505 laptop running Windows Vista with Mcafee Antivirus Plus. I have a Linksys Wireless Router WRT54GS.

Yesterday my laptop connectivity stopped working. I have other laptops in my home that are still connected to the internet successfully thru the router, so I think I've eliminated the router as the issue.

Initially, when I would attempt to diagnose the issue I would see a message that said 'Can't connect to Primary DNS Server'. Now I'm seeing a new message "A cable is not plugged into the network adapter Local Area Connection".

I've attached the results of an IPCONFIG /ALL as well as Ping Tests against the default gateway and other IPs.

Clearly from the ping tests, the laptop is not communicating out as the pings all timed out. I just don't understand why and would appreciate any tech help.

I have not really looked into this a great deal yet as I ran out of time but I set up my dad's wireless router on Sunday and fitted a wireless card to his Compaq laptop which he used to use with dial up internet. The installation went fine and the laptop will communicate with my wireless network but will not connect to the internet. It points me to internet connections but i have checked these and they look good. My next step is to connect it direct to the moden via a cable to double check the wireless connection. I think the laptop was Win 98SE and was updated with Win XP ie not a clean install, in fact i'm pretty sure but I did not do it. Any pointers in case this a frequent question would be great. I will try the direct connection tomorrow and see what occurs.

I apologize if I'm not using the correct terms. I'm a complete networking newbie, so please be gentle.

I have a new computer that I want to add to my existing network. It has no trouble connecting to the Internet through the network (I'm posting this from the new computer now) but it doesn't seem to be able to get on the workgroup so I can access the shared drives on the other computers. Nor can the other computers access it, although it shows up in the list of workgroup computers.

Setup info:
- Cable modem connected to a Linksys Wireless-G router.
- All computers connected wirelessly to router.
- The workgroup is called WORKGROUP.
- computer 1: MOBILE, WinXP Home SP2, sharing folders (It is not home right now so I have not been able to test whether it can connect to the new computer.)
- computer 2: HEAD, WinXP Home SP1, sharing C and D drives and its printer
- new computer: MediaCenter1, WinXP Media Center SP2, sharing C drive

Under System Information, I added MediaCenter1 to WORKGROUP. After I did that, I switched to HEAD and clicked on View workgroup computers. HEAD and Mediacenter1 showed up. But when I clicked on Mediacenter1, it gave me the error:
"Mediacenter1 is not accessible. You may not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions."
I turned off Windows Firewall on MediaCenter1 and tried again to access it from HEAD but got the same message.

After working with no apparent issues for over a year, my wireless internet connection to my Toshiba laptop has begun cutting out frequently (i.e. roughly once every hour). What makes it more frustrating is that every time it disconnects I have to reconnect manually using the troubleshoot feature in the 'Network Sharing Center' (I'm running windows 7). It always reconnects at the first attempt. Below is what is displayed after troubleshooting.

Now I don't think the issue is with my router as I have a PC connected via an ethernet cable to it which is having no connection issues, and my phone also has no issues when accessing the same wireless connection at the same time (when there is an apparent outage). Also, when I switch my router off an on again the connection is re-established automatically without having to use the troubleshoot feature.

If it helps, these are the detection details of the troubleshooting report.

I ask that you please be patient with me, as I am not very knowledgeable where computers are concerned.
So my wireless internet connection has been working completely fine on my Windows 8 laptop up until a couple of days ago. The wireless internet is working for all devices in my home except for the laptop. I am currently typing this on my mobile phone. When I try to diagnose the connection, I get an error message that says, "'Wi-Fi' doesn't have a valid ip configuration". I went into the Administrator Command Prompt and attempted an ipconfig /renew as I have heard this solves the problem, but I receive a message that says, "No operation can be performed on Local Area Connection* 11 while it has its media disconnected."

I have reset the computer, but to no avail. The internet connection icon on my taskbar shows me that I have a strong internet connection, but when I mouse over it, it says, "Unidentified Network. No internet access." I have also tried resetting the router. Any help would be much appreciated.

A:Wireless Internet Connection Suddenly Stopped Working on Windows 8

The Local Area Connection would not interfere with the wireless as that's the Ethernet port. That message is normal.

Go into the Network and Sharing Center, then on the left side in the blue section choose change adapter settings.

Right click on the wireless network icon and choose properties.

Highlight Internet Protocol Version 4 and click properties. Make sure both sections are selected for Automatically Obtain IP/DNS address. If you had to change them, click OK then Close. Go back to command prompt and type ipconfig/all and post teh results here.

Showed this to Geeksquad agent at Bestbuy and he told me that this could be a motherboard problem and nothing much can be done about it.

So basically i have a working laptop that i cannot to internet.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Please I need some help.
I want to know how can I keep an internet wireless connection while my laptop is in sleep mode, or maybe another way to keep only essential hardware functions so I don't loose my connection while I'm playing online games and at the same time saving energy, also preventing overheating my laptop (which is my main concern)

By the way I'm using windows 7 x64.

Thanks in advance.

I have just recently brought a functioning Toshiba Satellite laptop home from my mothers that I witnessed being surfed on and having music played on. I get the laptop home and try to connect to my wireless connection and it recognizeses it, know the name, says its connected, yet the IE says the IE can not display the webpage. I can connect with the ethernet cable and POW there it goes. What setting or what is going on????

A:Wireless Internet connection for Toshiba Satellite Laptop

Look on the corner of the base of the laptop and make sure the wi-fi or wireless card in enabled. It might be switched off. .. Other then that go Start(windows flag bottom left)>Control Panel>Network and Internet>Network and Sharing Center>Under Tasks on the top left click Manage Network Connections. If the wireless Adpter is listed in there right click it and you should be able to see if it enabled or disabled. if it disabled, it might be a corupt driver. Maybe doing a system recovery if you check both of those things.

Hi guys. It's been some time since my Dell XPS M1530 laptop has been having Internet issues when connected via Wireless.
It currently sports an Intel 4965 AGN card with Windows 7/8 pre-installed drivers and is connecting wirelessly to a Thomson router.

It connects smoothly, but its reception of packages sucks: I can't connect to FTP, load pages at all, and downloads are around 8 kB/s. (Max should be 250 kB/s). Whereas other laptops are able to load pages normally

All cords are correctly connected, and I don't believe the card is the one malfunctioning since I can connect to other routers flawlessly.

I've tried pinging to websites using cmd and get an oscillation between 25% - 100% of packages received.

Change the channel the router broadcasts on? I had to do this with my Grandson's setup recently when he started experiencing packet losses and dropped connections. Worth trying.

I don't know why this happens but it does. I never seen this before. Its quite weird. It just randomly comes and goes. Its still connected to the network but the internet connection comes and goes. No other systems or device have this problem. Things I have tried...

Setting the system to not allow it to turn off the card. I also changed it to high performance as well but none of these things seem to have worked. At this point I'm out of ideas and thus is why I'm here..

Its a laptop running Windows 8.1 x64

Thank you

This is the first time I've posted a problem so you need to be gentle with me if I do it wrong! We have been given a Gateway 400SD4 with a 1394 net adapter. We have a Belkin 54g high speed wireless g router connected to a Dell PC. We access the internet using this wireless connection it works fine with my Apple Mac book pro, my nephew and sister in law both use it with their laptops - no problems, works great all over the house. But this new Gateway laptop just will not connect ! Does it need another 'something'? I thought the net adapter was all it needed or am I being really stupid!?

Hi Bianca, welcome to the forum

I take it that the router and computer are both up and running, (you can access the internet) and that you are just trying to access the internet with your lappy.

If this is the case you need only to right click on the network symbol in the task bar (notification area), choose the option to join a network, select your router from the list, enter your WPA key (this is the same as for your other computer)and press connect

I'm guessing you didn't read the TSG Rules about this activity.

I bought a new HP Pavilion dv7-02185dx Entertainment Notebook PC (laptop) which runs Vista. I have a LynkSys Wireless router model WRT54G v4. Since I bought the laptop, I have an intermittent problem getting the internet using Internet Explorer 8 (have not tried other browers). Sometimes internet works fine, however, sometimes I have a problem when I click a link or open a new page. When the problem occurs, I get an error webpage stating "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" with a button on the page "Diagnose Connection Problems." When I click this button, I eventually get a window that says "Windows did not find any problems with this computer's network connection."

However, when this problem occurs, I check the network connection by going Start/Connect to. When I look at my network, it says connected and that I have an excellent signal (all 5 bars are green).

To temporarily fix the problem, I right click on the wireless network and click Diagnosis. On the window that comes up, I click "Reset the network adapter "Wireless Network Connection" subtitle (Resetting the adapter can sometimes resolve and intermittent problem." When I click this, it looks like it goes through some repairing process and I eventually get a window that states "The problem has been resolved." If I go back to the webpage with the initial error and refresh (f5), I do get the correct website and everything seems to be fine. Howe... Read more

Well, a couple of months ago I posted this same issue on a Yahoo Answers thread, which I will paste here for time-saving purposes.

Internet gradually getting slower, any help?

I recently got Internet installed in my own room, and for the first couple of days, the speed was fine, great actually, considering the fact that I'm paying only a little over 200 pesos for it (approximately $20). Then suddenly, after a little over 2 weeks, the browsing speed started slowing down considerably, to the point that right now, I had to reload Yahoo Answers around 7 times just to be able to post this question, because I kept getting "the connection had timed out".

Odd thing is, download speed stayed the same. I managed to download some stuff from Megaupload and it was speedy as usual. Only browsing was affected, apparently.

Now, I'm pretty sure it's the computer itself, because I connected the Ethernet cable to my dad's laptop and the speed was just as good as the first few days on my computer. Also, I've been surfing (ohmyGod,youdontknowhowmuchofapainitwas) through the Internet trying to find common solutions, and I tried every single one. I scanned for viruses and Spyware with AVG and SuperAntiSpywarePro, deleted Cache, Temp files, used System Restore to a point before the problem, cleaned out all of my useless files (the speed's fine for anything except browsing anyway), used CCleaner, reset my router, used Windows' ... Hello everyone,
I have an internet connection problem and was wondering if anyone here can help.
I cannot connect to the internet even though all the green lights on the modem are solid and steady. I have a laptop connects (ethernet cable) to the modem (which connect to the ISP). I ask my ISP support to verify my IP address and my modem mac address and they check out good. (I have an XP OS, IE, firefox, and opera web browsers, and a cable modem connection to the ISP - all three browsers cannot connect to the internet.) I can ping the yahoo and google websites and my loopback address, but cannot access these websites via my browsers. I look in the TCP/IP protocol properties and they're all set to automatically obtain the address. I also tried to manually configure the ip address, the sub mask, the dns servers, and the default gateway (first in the general tab, then in the alternate configuration tab) to the ones I found the network connections detail. I tried the ping, ipconfig, and netstat commands to try figuring out the problem but no luck.
Has anyone comes across this problem?

Any help and advices are much appreciated.
Thx in advance.

Hello there,

Please bear with me as I'm new here and I'm honestly not super tech-savvy. I'm seeking help because my laptop seems to have spontaneously lost the ability to connect to (or even detect) my home network internet connection. (Details about the laptop and OS are towards the end of this post.) When I open Chrome, I get the error message, "Unable to connect to the internet." When I click on the usual icon that I'd use to locate my home network, I see, "Currently connected to: Unidentified network. No network access." My network does not show up. There is a link for "Open Network and Sharing Center." I attached a screen shot of what I see when I click on that link. Clicking on the "Connect to a network" option leads me right back to "Currently connected to: Unidentified network. No network access" with a link to open the Network and Sharing Center. I can't get the laptop to find my home network no matter which choice I try.

I got out my old HP laptop (which has wireless) for troubleshooting purposes. It immediately found my home network and accessed the internet without any problems. So I it would seem there are no issues with my modem and/or router. I suspect I've just done something dumb in the laptop settings. I once accidentally turned off all sound for internet websites and couldn't restore it until a friend came to troubleshoot, so this scenario does not seem unlikely.

Also, in case it provides any clues... Read more

I recently ran into a fatal error with my hard drive and needed to replace it for my Sony VAIO laptop. Upon receiving and successfully mounting the new drive (and formatting the disk thereafter), I managed to download and install some necessary drivers with success, specifically the audio and video drivers. However, I am having some difficulty in reaching the internet, simply because there is not a known wireless connection (I think that when we had originally bought the laptop, it was already configured with a wireless setup, but I cannot be certain). Our router is a NETGEAR, but we never had to install the wireless NETGEAR software on the laptop. Instead, with the pre-existing wireless system, it simply detected routers in range and provided a list of these available networks. From there, we would commonly select NETGEAR and enter the necessary password key. The problem that I am currently facing is that I cannot access the list of available networks.

The model of this laptop is a Sony VAIO VGN-FS740/W, and we bought it in 2005.

I would greatly appreciate any help that you can provide.

Hello, I actually was having the same exact problem as azngamer135. My laptop connects fine to the ethernet connection as well as to any unsecure connection. However, when I put in the key for my secure router connection at home...it says waiting to connect and then just stops. When I was connected through the hardwire...I typed in the IP address and generated new WEP keys adn that still didn't work. Do you think theres any way that I can connect to a secure wireless network? (Also, I noticed that you were asking azngamer if they have a cordless phone and Im pretty sure all of the phones in my house are cordless). Thanks alot!

A:Laptop wireless connection problem

Don't "generate" WEP keys, use only the HEX key option. Many different brands of WiFi equipment generate different hex keys from the same passcode.
