I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi Anandani,
Dell Studio 1558 has not been tested by Dell for Windows 10 operating system you will not find drivers for it. However, please use the card reader Windows 7 driver and install it in compatibility mode.

I've seen this problem reported for other Dell machines for a year now, since Windows 10 came out, but not for my model.
Since installing Windows 10, I can't use my SD card slot to write to, format, etc. a microSD card with adaptor. I can see the drive, read the card, and transfer files from it, but when I try to write I get an error message that the disk is write protected. It isn't. The exact same cards and adaptors work fine in my son's computer, and the cards work fine in my phone.
I just updated all my drivers and it still isn't working. When will Dell finally provide a fix for this? I can't even find any indication that they're working on it.

Hello All, I'm looking under the hood of my 1st gen Thinkpad X1 Carbon, and I'm trying to identify the PCIe slots.  In particular, the following page states that I should have 2 PCI Express Mini slots:  https://support.lenovo.com/au/en/solutions/pd027202 Now I see the WLAN card and the WWAN card, and my natural assumption is that these are both in PCIe ports, but on closer inspection I see that the WLAN card's slot is only 19mm wide, whereas the WWAN card is the standard 26mm width of normal PCIe Mini ports. This raises some questions:  1. Is the WLAN connected to a proprietary slot, or is this just a different type of PCIe standard?  2. If the WLAN is connected to a proprietary slot, where is my second PCIe slot? Any help would greatly be appreciated. Regards,Adam Zebrowski-az

A:Why is my WLAN card slot narrower than my WWAN card slot (PCIe mini)?

On closer inspection, it looks like my SSD connects to a similar-looking slot as my WLAN card.  I guess this means my WLAN card uses a SATA connection or something? I normally work with desktop PCs, so I'm unfamiliar with a lot of these laptop hardware standards. Regards,Adam Zebrowski-az-

While contemporaneous ATI/AMD graphics cards will work, newer generation AMD cards are generally not backward compatible with older ThinkCentres.   I suggest you search for which newer Nvidia will work with your system.

The readme file for the Nvidia driver for your system has a list of supported cards, but since it is from 2009, it is dated.

Hello everybody.

Since sending a motherboard in for rma is both money-sink (need to ship it to them, a replacement unit and to reinstall windows) and an excruciating wait (weeks? months?) I'd like to try absolutely everything I can before I do.

Two months ago everything was working fine, then I had to take everything to another room to paint the walls in my room. Start getting "display drivers stopped working" as I plug the unit back, this over the span of three days. Case was cleaned last month, I decide to take out gpu and clean some more. Turn outlet and psu off, as soon as I start unscrewing the dvi cable I can feel static. Unplug psu, discharge power with the case button, take 6870 out and remove that little dust there was, put it back: gpu is powered up, fan spins, permanent black screen at boot, no video signal. Take it off, hook the thing to onboard gfx: everything works fine. Try back with 6870, black screen. Go get PSU tested, it apparently works (they didn't give me a full report on load). Go back, test mobo with three different older ati (pre-amd) cards, 3x black screen. Checked bios to make sure, main adapter was on pci-e.

I had other stuff to do so I put the issue to rest for a few days while I had one of the ati cards (2600 xt) double-checked by a store. As it turns out, the 2600 xt works alright, so I decided to take the plunge and go with a z77-a motherboard to replace the asrock (very cheap and couldn't even overclock so). After ... Read more

A:Card not working in first PCI-E slot

Are you cleaning out all the old drivers before switching all these cards? that can cause a card not to work right. But the reason you are switching to on board is because the bios does not detect the card. These motherboards- if they detect a card in a pcie X16 slot automatically disable on board graphics. So, it seems if you are switching to on board, it means BIOS isn't detecting the card is installed.

This is a used Toshiba laptop I got a month ago. The previous owner said he never used the SD card slot. I know why, because it's not working. When I slide any SD card in, the light comes on for 1 second and then comes off. The card is not recognized. Needless to say, I know the cards are good because they work everywhere else, including a USB card reader I have.

I checked Device manager and I don't see a problem. I believe the SD card reader is the "USB Mass Storage Device"?

I ran troubleshooting and it found that there is a problem with PnP devices and an "unknown device doesn't have a driver". It didn't find a solution or the driver.

I went to the Toshiba site and downloaded a couple of card reader driver versions.
Can someone please tell me the sequence, I uninstall, reboot, install new driver?

Thanks!

A:SD card slot not working.

There is a program called AIDA that you can download from here:

EVEREST Ultimate Edition - PC Diagnostics | Lavalys.com

Run it and under Windows Devices look for unknown devices. Click on the unknown device and it will tell you what the device is, probably the SD Card reader. Download the drivers for it from Toshiba and install.

This is my first post here, so be gentle on me

Since the symptoms of my problem are so specific and easy to reproduce I figured I would find the answers easily.. But after a whole evening of searching on Google, I have found nothing which can help...

I have just built my new PC using an Asus M4A78 motherboard and had surprisingly few problems.

However, today I found that I have a problem with "card readers".

I have a card reader in my printer, an internal 5 slot one (which connects directly to a USB header on the Motherboard), and I also have several external ones.

What I have found is this.

1. If I connect the Card Reader to the PC when its up and running and it works (it doesn't matter if there is a card in the slot or not).. I get the 'bing bong' noise.. The reader appears (I see the drive letter) and then when I insert a card, Windows 'mounts' it and I can view the files.

2. If I Reboot the PC whilst a reader is connected (and empty), when Windows boots I see the drive letters, but when I insert a card I get an 'egg timer' in Windows and double clicking on the card letter shows "Please Insert disk into drive X:"

3. If Boot the PC whilst a reader is connected AND there is a media card (SD, CF, etc) in the slot and it works normally.. The PC boots, the card is readable and significantly, if I can remove the card and reinsert it (or insert another card) and it mounts.

So the bottom line is tha... Read more

Slot was always reliable; Inserted sd card while pc was coming out of standby mode and no longer works.  Device Manager shows PCI Device not working (PCI bus 1, device 0, function 1) but has no details on driver so it can't be found to update it.  Tried disabling then reenabling the driver with no success.  Checked sd card, can still be read in camera.  Swapped different sd cards with same result.  Slot is not damaged, think it is a driver issue.

Hello. I have a Lenovo ideapad 100s - 80R2 that I just bought a few years ago. The device is running Windows 10 Home, build 1511. I have recently bought a Sandisk 32GB microSDHC card for use of the built-in microSD card slot of the device. When I tried to insert the card into the slot, there was not "Hardware Insert" notification sound coming out of Windows. I thought the card wasn't working. When I managed to insert the card into a USB microSD card reader, the system was able to detect the card, so it means it's working fine, but the microSD card isn't. I tried to find any updates for the SD card controller of the device, but it says it's already the latest version. Any help?

Dave.

A:Windows 7 upgrade,Now sound card not working

Older sound cards, that worked OK in Windows XP can be a problem in Vista/Win7/Win 8 as the XP drivers are not compatible. Some sound functions are handled differently and require Vista/Win7 specific drivers. Many older devices are not compatible (hardware and/or internal firmware) and thus a prime reason no compatible drivers are available.

Unfortunately, if you can't find any drivers, you will have to replace the sound card with a Win 7 compatible device. Same way with a new, compatible, USB connected gaming controller. The trials and tribulations of upgrading older hardware to new OS systems that are designed primarily for newer hardware.

If this is a game port joystick you may be able to use a USB/game port adapter but there are no guarantees with these - some devices work satisfactorily and some do not. That would probably less costly than replacing the sidewinder wheel.

I have a AMD 7870 Dual slot video card on my Asus M5A99X-Evo Motherboard. It is installed in the first 16x slot...and I also have a PCI-e 1x XF-I Titanium Sound card. Its it recommended? Last question: If I move this to one of the 8x slots below on my motherboard, will it cause my 16x PCI-E slot to slow down? Thanks ahead of time for any help you can provide.

A:Question about PCI-e slot below dual slot video card

My opinion ...

Yes, setting up like that will have an impact. The air flow to your GPU will be restricted so it will more than likely run hotter than it did. It may still stay withing recommended specs, but it will run hotter.

The motherboard has onboard sound (Realtek® ALC892 8-Channel High Definition Audio CODEC ), any particular reason why you don't use that? Onboard sound is perfectly good for gaming and the like now, its not like older machines where you needed a dedicated card for decent quality. In my opinion, you only need a dedicated card if you are doing a lot of detailed audio work (mixing, remastering and other specific audio work). This would totally remove the issue.

The type of memory doesn't matter, its the type of interface the computer supports among a few other things to watch for.

You likely have a PCI-Express slot, as long as it a x16 slot it doesn't really matter if its a version 1.1 or 2.0 slot.

Is this for your Dell or another computer? Whats you budget and what needs do you have for the video card?

Can I ask why you're posting in a Vista forum even though the problem is germain to any operating system?

You can multiboot in Vista and Win 7 as long as you install XP on a separate partition. Have you considered installing XP in Virtual XP which is available for Win 7 ultimate. Then you wouldn't need your drive.

They shouldn't make it so easy to refomat your SD card while it's in the camera but it happened. It's a Canon Powershot SD1100 IS.

Now, I know all about recovering things that are lost but I seem to have run into a bit of a roadbump here. The SD card does not show up when I plug it into my card reader. Okay fine, so I decided to put the card back into the camera and plug it in VIA USB to run Recuva on it via that way - sadly the only thing that shows up is "Portable Media Device" and Recuva can't see that because it doesn't have a drive letter assigned to it, BUT it doesn't show up in Disk Management EITHER.

Now, the SD slot works with my SDHC 8GB card just fine, works fine with my MicroSD adapter with my 2GB microSD card, but for some reason since this card was formatted in the camera it just doesn't want to show up under the explorer at all.. Anyone have any ideas on how to 1. Get this card to show up in explorer and then 2. Get all my pictures back?

Hello  At work my colleagues and I use a Think T470S , Model-No 20HF-003NMZ. There is a SIM card slot at the side of these notebooks, so I put in a SIM card from a Swiss provider. However, with or without a SIM, I don't see any LTE/WWAN devices in Windows listet on at least two f our T470s. So my question is, does the T470S support LTE/WWAN access? I mean, there is the SIM card slot, but as I can see from the Lenovo's shop configurator, some models do have a WWAN ready option. Does this mean I have to buy an accessory to get the WWAN working? Or is it a configuration / driver problem? Your help would be greatly appreciated. Kind regards, Radiofloyd

Hi Radiofloyd,Warm Greetings & welcome to Lenovo Community, happy to have you here.

Looking at your system configuration this model is WWAN ready but in order to use this feature, you need to add WWAN card to it.

I have thinkpad w530 w windows 8.1 I am trying to capture video footage into my computer using a firewire card that of course plugs into the MEDIA CARD READER SLOT. I can't get the computer to recognize my camcorder- the camcorder connection does not show up in DEVICE MANAGER I am using HDVSPLIT to capture the video and also in hdvsplit there is a message, "camera not recognized" or something like that.  I am not sure if the media card reader is bad, or maybe the firewire card is bad or maybe it is the hdv split that is the problem? Any help will be greatly appreciated!

A:How do I tell if my Media Card Reader/Express card slot is functioning correctly?

Hello,

Could it be the ExpressCard slot that the FireWire card plugs into?  I've never seen a FireWire card that plugs into the media card slot used for SD Cards.

FireWire cards can be a little tricky to get working sometimes, especially when interfacing with a camcorder.

Have you checked with the manufacturer to see if Windows 8.1 drivers are available for it?  Even if they are not, it may be possible to use Windows 7 or even Windows Vista drivers.

Once you have verified that the FireWire card is recognized, plug the camcorder in again, amd see if it gets recognized.  If it does not, check with its manufacturer for Windows 8.1 drivers, just like you did with the FireWire card.

At that point, the hardware should all be working with Windows 8.1.

Regards,

Okay, I did something really stupid. It was late, I was in the dark, and I wasn't paying attention (obviously) so here's what happened...

I had a SanDisk 2GB Micro SD Memory Card that I was using in my cell phone.
I wanted to transfer some pics & photos from my computer to the phone, so I decided to stick it in the Express Card slot of my laptop. Simple enough, right?

....Well being the incredibly smart person that I am, I put the micro memory card in the adapter, but it was the wrong one. So my computer pretty much swallowed it whole. I can't get it back out.
Now I can't use the Express Card slot in my computer AT ALL, because the old one is still stuck in there. You can't really see it, but if you try to put another adapter in there, it won't "click". It won't go all the way because ... the old one I lost is still in there waiting to be rescued, haha.

So my question is: How do I get the memory card out of my computer??

I tried taking it apart, but I couldn't get the part of where the express card slot is, so that was no good. There's a way to do this, I know. I'm just not smart enough to figure it out on my own. Which is probably a good thing, because I might mess it up again, lol.

I have a Toshiba Satellite A215-S7416 laptop.
Any help is appreciated!

Thanks!

-Ashley

Hello,
I am after upgrading my Alienware m18x r2 video card from an nVidia GTX 675m to a GTX 880m. After I turned on the laptop to install the drivers I got an error saying that there was no hardware that supports the drivers found. I have checked device manager and under display it shows up as a Microsoft basic display adapter but in the properties I can see that the hardware ID is the hardware ID from the nVidia Gtx 880m. Is there anything that I can do to fix this? Is my laptop even compatible with this gpu
Thanks for any help in advance,
Kieran

A:Alienware m18x r2 gpu card upgrade not working

Hi Kieran,
What is the OS installed on the system?
The "Alienware M18x R2 - Avenger" - has not been tested by Dell with GTX 880 for compatibility.
However, the GTX880 is compatible to work with "Alienware 18 - Viking" model.
Update the BIOS - http://dell.to/26loSV5
Download the video driver from nvidia site - http://bit.ly/1SJRgWy and try installing the same. If the normal installation does not go through, then force the driver installation - see this link - http://bit.ly/1r0CRYO
Or manually install the driver through device manager - see this example - http://bit.ly/1c64Cu8

Hi All
I got a nice freesync monitor during the holidays and would like to use the capability.
My xps-8910 has a pci2 slot but all the graphics cards use a pci3 slot.
Can I put one of these pci3 graphics cards into the pci2 slot?
Are there pros and cons for doing this?

Hello all, I have a HP Pavilion G6 2330ee notebook, it has a 7670m ATI graphics card. Everything was working properly (I can assign applications and games to the graphics card using the switchable graphics utility). However, after I installed the latest bios update, http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/swdetails/HP-Pavilion-g6-Notebook-PC-series/5330578/... , the graphics card stopped working, since then, an error message appears after I login to my machine saying that and application named LoadMMDriver stopped working and I can't use the graphics card anymore (all the applications and games that are assigned to it crash).I tried to recover the bios to the F.26 version, but it failed (it gives a 500 error after applying the old bios image). So, my question is, can I rollback to the previous bios version in anyway?? or at least can I get the graphics card working again??The latest bios update is F.27 Rev A, does this means that there will be future updates that will fix the issue??Please help and thank you

A:Graphics card stopped working after bios upgrade

Try this.1-Immediately after powering on hold/tap the Esc key.2-When the menu appears, tap F2 for System Diagnostics.3-In the list of items will be BIOS or Firmware Management.Use the arrow key to move down & highlight it.Press Enter key.4-You should now have a Rollback BIOS option.Use arrow key again to highlight and press Enter key.

Hi1. Does your laptop have wwan card installed? What's the model? Check out in the Device Manager, Network Adapters thread.2. Are there any unknown devices in the Device Manager?3. Be sure wwan card is enabled in the BIOS Setup (Secutity menu, I/O Port Access)4. Be sure hardware wireless radio switch is turned on (on the right side of the case)

Hi. I have recently aquired a very old computer (8-9 years old). I am looking at replacing the old agp graphics card because it is not working properly and then sell the computer for quite a low price. Any way.

I have looked in the case and took the card out and I belive that the graphics card slot is agp 2x. The card has two slots in it leading me to belive that it is a universal 1.5v 3.3v card. I am just wondering what cards my computer would accept and whether a 4x card would work ok in a 2x card slot.

Any help apreciated.

Thanks.

Hi all,

I have some fairly specific questions that are related to graphics cards upgrades with respect to PSUs, so allow me to lay out the background of the system first and then get into my questions second....

First, system details:

Intel P4 Northwood, 2.6GHz
ASUS P4SD-VX (I believe that this is a Sony OEM board)
2 GB PC3200 DDR SDRAM (Corsair something or other, 4 x 512 MB)
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128 MB
1 x 7200 RPM IDE harddrive
2 x DVD-RW/DVD+RW drives
1 floppy drive
1 Sound Blaster PCI card
92 mm case fan, 80 mm CPU fan, stock fans

Putting all this into the eXtreme Power Supply Calculator here gives me a recommended PSU wattage of 238W. Even with the "capacitor aging" factor turned up to 30% (the system is ~4.5 years old), I only get 309W.

Now, my PSU is rated at 295.4W, with 17A max on the single +12V rail. It has NEVER---repeat, NEVER---overheated, been unstable, crashed, blue screened, or done anything that I didn't want it to do. Lucky me!

Here are my questions:

1) Is the current video card a "balanced" card for my system set-up? Could I feasibly run a more robust card, given the CPU/RAM, etc? FSB is 800MHz. Read---I want to run a more robust card and want to know if it's worth the effort. However, I'm concerned about CPU and FSB bottlenecks.

2) Regardless of balanced components, what is the most robust card my system can run? Also,

3) Is my PSU enough to run a more robust card? I... Read more

If all you play is WoW that system should be fine. And you even said it runs perfect for you. It doesn't look like you need an upgrade if you're just playing WoW...Unless you plan on playing new games.

My Hp Pavilion g6 1200 tx did not pose any problems for 4 years. But a week ago I upgraded my RAM from 4 to 8gb. The shopkeeper inserted hynix 4gb  ddr3 ram. So that makes two rams in my loptop  :-1. Samsung ( Came when I purchased laptop 4 years ago ) - 4gb ddr32. Hynix 4b ddr3 After a week my laptop stoped working. Showing it two service center they said one of my memory slot is damaged and can't be used. So now I had only one memory slot active with 4gb ram inside it. My Question  is :-1. CAN I INSERT 8GB RAM IN ONE MEMORY SLOT (SINCE OTHER ONE IS DAMAGED)  OF MY PAVILION G6 1200 TX MOTHERBOARD . If yes then please tell me :-1. Of what type of ram should I be looking for ( Sepecification )2. From where should I buy . Crucial got 4gb * 2 ram which I can't usePlease reply ASAP. Thanks & RegardsPrince Soni

Hi, You can't put 8GB in one slot and it does not support 8GB (in 2 slots 4*2) that may explain why "Other one is damaged". Please only follow the book. Must be some reasons behind the 6GB max as mentioned on page 3:       http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c02968997.pdf    (Second manual of the following link):       http://support.hp.com/us-en/product/HP-Pavilion-g6-Notebook-PC-series/5145704/model/5163239/manuals Regards.

No the laptop is from before there was such a thing as M.2 slots. Your only SSD option is a 2.5 inch wide SATA SSD that is shaped the same as the hard drive. You will still experience a major improvement in performance from such an upgrade.  Post back with any more questions. If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.
