Thinkpad T400 Elite. Get BSODs all the time

Q: Thinkpad T400 Elite. Get BSODs all the time

It all started when I installed Win 7 after a Linux usage for a couple of months. First I thought it was uTorrent that screwed it up so I removed it but it still gave BSODs at least once a day. Haven't had the energy to do anything about it until now so now I'm asking you guys for advice how to get rid of it.
I have activated minidump in Control Panel > System > Advanced System Settings > Setting in Startup and Recovery > Small memory dump (256KB) under System failure.
Got a BSOD a couple of minutes ago but I didn't get a minidump output from it.

Attached the four debug reports I got from SF Diagnostic Tool.

Appreciate any help I can get,
Johan

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A:thinkpad T400 Ram Upgrade

RAM: You need a minimum of PC3-8500 1066MHz DDR3. However faster chips like PC3-10600 1333MHz DDR3 or PC3-12800 1600MHz DDR3 will work fine as well.

If there's little or no difference in price I'd buy the faster memory. The reason is that if I upgrade to a new(er) notebook it's more likely the RAM will work at full speed on that system.

Note also that while you can upgrade to a maximum of 8GB (2x 4GB) with a 32-bit OS like WinXP-32 you won't be able to utilize more than 3GB.

SSD: Any of the drives you've listed will work well.

Hi, I've searched the forums and elsewhere online, and I can't find any real help for this issue. I'm running Win 7, and I have the most up-to-date drivers from the Lenovo site. I have turned on loudness equalization, but it has not helped the problem. This is an across-the-board problem. What I mean by that is, this problem persists regardless of the application, which I happen to be using. For instance, I use Media Player Classic: Home Cinema to watch movies. If the volume is at 0%, as I begin adjusting it upward, the volume level rises. However, as I reach about 70%, the volume stops increasing. There are audio adjustments w/in the application to boost the volume, but they serve to provide minimal effects. Overall, the volume is incredibly low. If you're sitting more than a few feet away from the laptop, it is inaudible. I don't know what else to do, and I was hoping that someone might offer some assistance. Thank you.  Jeff

How about uninstall your current Conexant driver and install custom Dolby driver from my signature link? It should help to boost a lot. In fact, T400 speakers are louder than other new T-series speaker.

Hi Punittiwari3353,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

Have you checked it individually with battery and without battery?
Did you check with different power adapter or with different power socket?
Is the CPU fan running with regular speed?
Boot the system into ?Safe mode? and check if the issue persists there also?

Hope this helps. Do post back if the issue persists!

Best regards,

I honestly have no clue what could have caused this!  I turned it on this morning & it was stuck on the booting screen. It read "ThinkPad" in large letters followed by "To interrupt normal start up, press the blue ThinkVantage button." I waited for about a half hour for it to boot & it never did. I of course pressed the ThinkVantage button & to my dismay...nothing happened. Afterwards, I unplugged it & removed the battery pack. I then plugged it back in & attempted to start it up again. Once again, nothing. I unplugged it again & attached the battery pack. At that point I tried starting it up again and N O T H I N G!  What do I do?!

Now, I suspect that the inverters are fine and I'm wondering about the LCD switch or LCD cable. I suppose I could just buy a cable, but before that, I wanted to take a step back and try to figure out if I'm overlooking anything. I've not been able to find a picture or location of the t400 lcd switch in either the lenovo hardware manual for the t400 or elsewhere online.Hi,I've got a thinkpad t400 with CCFL backlight. I recently replaced a bad LCD (the backlight was working at the time) with a new one. However, while the new screen works, it's backlight did not. I ordered a new inverter and plugged that in - still didn't work. I grabbed the old screen's backlight and tried it with both inverters - did not come on. I then grabbed another laptop I have and plugged in the old screen's backlight - it came on. Plugged in the new screen's backlight (while lcd was still plugged into the thinkpad), it's backlight came on.So, I know both backlights are fine, and suspected I just had a crappy inverter. I got a replacement new inverter and it still doesn't work. Tried new lcd and old backlight with all three again, no dice. Backlights still turn on when connected to spare laptop. So I now suspect the inverters are fine. I noticed that the laptop no longer goes to sleep or hibernation when the lid is closed. I changed the power settings so that it should sleep or hibernate, tried each power mode and it still refuses to do so. So I think the issue is with the switch that detects when t... Read more

I have a thinkpad T400. Couple of months ago the problem started. I could not shut it down it just keep re-booting. I had to press and hold the start button to shut it. Now it won't boot at all. It beeps 1-3-3-1 and just sits there. When I press start button all lights come ON for a while and after only battery , AC and Ready lights stay ON. Here are few things I did so far without any luck: 1. Removed battery and AC adaptor waited few minutes put it back - same problem2. Removed CMOS battery. DIMM cards waited for ten minutes replaced - same problem tried with swapping  DIMM cards - when I put only one card on top slot it says put the card on zero "bottom" position. After placing the Mem card on the bottom slot no thing happens. It beeps again and sit. When I checked in the manual it says either DIMM or System board. I do not know which one is giving me the problem. I just do not want to replace all parts without knowing. Can any body help please or had similar issue and solutions if you managed to solve it. Thank you. Roshni

Hi all -I know I am talking about a very old machine but I am hoping there is someone out there that would be willing and able to provide helpful  advice - some background -  in my dire need I purchased a 'refurb' Lenovo Thinkpad T400 from who now turns out to be an unreputable seller - I was silly enough not to worry about recovery disks or even a 30 day warranty - now I am paying dearly for my negligence.  This machine has had issues from day one that I thought I could work my way thru reading forums, Lenovo site etc. but nothing has worked.  My first challenge was trying to just get the right-click on touchpad to produce context menu - I searched and searched and reluctantly loaded 3rd party softwares to no avail.  I gave up on that only to discovered that when I loaded any antimalware program my cursor would not open that program nor would it open any other program on the machine. So I uninstalled the antimalware. So I can't really run to see if I have a virus.  To make a long story short right now NONE of the function keys work nor the THINKVANTAGE.  When I reboot and attempt to go to safe mode, bios utility I get nothing except opening up windows where sometimes the cursor will open a program or not and the trying to open programs from the start menu or the task bar is hit or miss same happens in the start menu and trying to open a browser.  I am running on Windows 7 Pro 64-bit and would like to go back to factory settings, but ag... Hi,

I have a T400 which has the following two display adapters:

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3400 Series
Mobile Intel(R) 45 Express Chipset Family

After installing Windows 7 and checking device manager, the ATI adapter does show up under the "Display adapters' section, but it has a ! sign on it, and if I click for details, it says:

This device cannot start. (Code 10)

I tried downoading and installing this:

Lenovo Support & downloads - ThinkPad Switchable Graphics Driver for Windows Vista 32bit and 64bit - ThinkPad T400, R400, T500, W500

and when I rebooted, it went through some diagnostic tests in a cmd window to finish installation. But when I checked the device manager again, the ATI adapter still says it cannot start.

I also tried this:

ATI Catalyst? Mobility Display Driver

which I got to by selecting W7 32-bit > Mobility Radeon > Mobility Radeon HD 3000 series.

It seemed to install OK, but I got a message which I've gotten with previous attempts, which says:

"The Catalyst Control Center is not supported by the driver version of your enambled graphics adapter. Please update your ATI graphics driver, or enable your ATI adapter using the Displays manager."

I went to the device manager, right-clicked on the ATI adapter and did Update Driver, and it did at first find a better match but said it couldn't be installed with the same error message from above (Code 10). Now, when I try to update the driver again, it says... Read more

First, my t400 would only boot with power cord unplugged. Then it stopped booting altogether. I read to press the power button 10 times and hold it on the tenth time and to unscrew the palm rest to unplug the little battery for 30 seconds. That is the only way I can get it to boot now. I picked up a new regular battery today thinking it might be related but that hasn't solved it. Any ideas?

A:thinkpad t400 wont boot w/o reseting little battery behind palm rest

I looked at it closer and to get it to start i don't press the power button at all. I unplug the power cord and after unplugging the CMOS battery for awhile i just plug the power cord back in and it starts up. The first thing i see as it starts up is an error message about a bad CMOS checksum and then i have to change the date/time in the BIOS or it yells at me to do it. After all that it boots into windows 7. Once it is in windows no matter what i do to change the settings of what the power button does it still doesn't do anything. I can restart it fine but once i shut it down it the CMOS battery needs to be reset to get it going again.

At the beginning, it wasn't much of an issue. I were able to upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10 like usual and there weren't any problems, except that I couldn't boot from USB, which is an option locked by the BIOS.I attempted to get into the BIOS using all types of passwords, but all were wrong and I were able to get into the BIOS after 3 wrong password attempts but I weren't able to change most of the settings (including the boot from USB option).I tried to find a way to remove the password using software, and according to many recommendations, I installed the CMOSpwd program and tried to remove the password. The laptop rebooted, and there's were my issue is now. After the start-up screen, the next screen shows:  "Error 0271 - check data and time settings", then it goes to the screen where I should enter the password, but this time I can't enter to the read-only BIOS nor the Windows 10 so I got no choice but to get the password from somewhere, which I am unable to do since this is one old laptop.I am not in much of a hurry and any help is appreciated.Thanks.

A:Unable to enter T400 BIOS or Windows due to Error 0271 - check data and time settings

Welcome to the forum.

The normal action when you get "Error 0271 - check data and time settings" is to go into BIOS and set the date/time. You will need a valid password to get into BIOS to change these settings.

This forum has a policy that discussions about circumventing passwords is prohibited. If you want to pursue this option you will need to do so elsewhere.

About two weeks ago, I began getting BSODs on a 9 month old ThinkPad T410 running Win Professional 7x64, OEM. This is the original install of the OS, and there have been no recent hardware changes. Prior to this issue, the machine has performed without any failures.

Today's failure happened quite spontaneously (or so it seemed to me) while the ThinkPad was sitting unattended and unused for about 15 minutes.

Thanks very much for your assistance.

I've tried testing the memory, ran ok . Tried rolling back video drivers to the latest from Asus instead of from AMD. Nothing. Tried dissasembling and re assembling the comp in case there was a grounding error since I have a weird case (lanboy air). Seemed to work for a few days but ever since I got Diablo 3 the bsods returned. Now they happen when playing D3 and when watching long flash streams or long flash videos. (I don't do much else). It's not a temp problem (I checked CPU and GPU temp for a long time they were really cool) Thanks for helping.
? OS - Windows 7 ?x64 ? What was original installed OS on system? WIN 7 ? Is the OS an OEM version (came pre-installed on system) or full retail version (YOU purchased it from retailer)? I bought a version called OEM system builder (it was cheaper on newegg) ? Age of system (hardware) year and a half ? Age of OS installation - have you re-installed the OS? half a year ish i guess. I re installed when i got my vertex 3 ? CPU = AMD Phenom 2 x6 1090T 3.20 ghz ? Video Card - AMD 6970 asus eyefinity 6 version ? MotherBoard - asus m4a88td-v evo ? Hello Lady_Liberty and welcome to TSF!

It appears that most of your dumps attached are IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL bugchecks that do not point to a solid driver culprit. In one SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED_M bugcheck, dxgmms1.sys is mentioned which is the DirectX kernel. Since we're not seeing any driver culprits here, and we're seeing a DirectX kernel issue, I am going to guess we're dealing with a hardware issue here, or more specifically a GPU issue.

Before we rule that out though, let's take care of a few software issues I see in drivers:

1. sptd.sys is listed which is the SCSI Pass Through Direct Host - Daemon Tools. I believe it also comes with Alcohol 120. Download and run the SPTD Uninstaller to safely and fully remove sptd.sys from your system:

DuplexSecure - Downloads

Also, I don't see Daemon Tools in your modules list, but if you have Daemon Tools or Alcohol 120 installed, I'd more than recommend uninstalling those and replacing them with another program such as: PowerISO, ImgBurn, etc.

If after that you're still having issues, I would recommend running Furmark to ensure your GPU is not the issue. Do note that things can get a little hot when running Furmark. If temps get to or above 90c, end the test by pressing ESC.

Regards,

Patrick

Hi guys. I stumbled across this site while desperately seeking a solution to my BSODs. I built this computer about 3 days ago and since then I have been trying to fix the problem that I cant find. This is my first computer that I've build and set up my self so that could be the problem at hand . Here are my specs.

OS: Windows 7 Home 64bit
CPU: AMD Phenom II 3.40 Ghz Quad-Core
Motherboard: Asus M4A87TD EVO
Memory: Corsair 4GB (2 sticks) DDR3 XMS3
Graphics Card(s): HIS Radeon hd 5770
PSU: hec X-Power Pro 650 650W
Case: Lancool PC-K58

I will attach a zip of my dmp files since that seems to be the the standard for BSOD threads around here :P Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I also forgot to add these three pieces of info. My Win 7 Home 64bit is OEM and did not come installed. I also attached two more files to help specify my problems.

Love to help but you sent the executable rather than the files try this method.

If you wish to have others assist you with your computer's BSOD symptoms, upload the contents of your "\Windows\Minidump" folder. The procedure:

* Copy the contents of \Windows\Minidump to another (temporary) location somewhere on your machine.
* Zip up the copy.
* Attach the ZIP archive to your post using the "paperclip" (file attachments) button.
* Briefly describe the problem history and circumstances in the same post. Somebody will attend to your query as soon as possible.

Hi, I'm getting a lot of BSODS and it has been increasing lately. now I can get them like 10 mins apart.
It is mostly caused by ntoskrnl.exe with errors like "page fault in non paged area" and "Memory management".
I have included the usual dumps and stuff. Any help is appreciated.

A:BSODS all the time.

Your BIOS dates from 2011. Please check at the manufacturer's website to see if there are any BIOS updates available for your system. Also check the readme file to see if they apply to the problems that you are having. Please be advised that flashing the BIOS is a very unforgiving process - and one mistake can physically damage your motherboard.

C: drive only has about 10% free space. Windows likes 15% free space in order to perform stuff "behind the scenes" without adversely affecting the system's performance. Please free up 15% on ALL hard drives (you can get away with 10% on larger drives and won't notice a large performance penalty)

SSD's were temperamental when they first came out, but their reliability has improved greatly over the last year or two. There are 2 things that MUST be checked on systems with BSOD's and SSD's:

1) That the SSD firmware is the latest available for the SSD
2) That the storage controller drivers on the motherboard are the most recent. They must date from late 2012 or later. This is ALL controllers, not just the one that the SSD is attached to.

Hi, I have just received the HP Elite Thunderbolt 3 65W USB-C Dock. I have plugged it in, and my Elite X2 1012 G1 charges, but that is all. None of the ports are working. Monitor is not recognised either. If I plug my phone in via the USB port, it will charge, but not recognise it as a storage device. I have searched everywhere, and cannot find drivers that will resolve this issue. I have:- Thunderbolt software installed, and running, but still to no avail.- Installed and run "Intel Thunderbolt Firmware Update Utility", but get an error that there is no controller driver. Please help. ps. The machine was reimaged with a corporate SOE. So I am not sure if I am missing drivers.

I finally received our Thunderbolt 3 docks this week.  Same issues as OP.  I was able to get it working by installing the Intel Thunderbolt Secure Connect under the Driver - Controller section of the drivers for the X2 1012 tablet.  Hopefully this helps someone else.  Direct link to the driver page below. http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?sp4ts.oid=8741946&swItemId=ob_161921_1&swEnvOid=419...

I am experiencing a wide variety of BSOD error codes mostly when playing games or when GPU is doing something intensive - for example rendering Agar.io game in browser. The error codes I have written down so far are:

ATTEMPTED_EXECUTE_OF_NOEXECUTE_MEMORY

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL x 3-4 times

SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION

KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED x2-3 times

WhoCrashed tells me for each error that its probable cause is a faulty driver but I have the latest drivers for each component. I have tried few older versions of my GPU's drivers but that didn't help. I have also tried stress testing my GPU with HeavyLoad but after 15-20 mins of extreme GPU fan noises still nothing. It seems weirdly random but somehow connected to graphic processing. If I don't play any games it never happens.

My specs:

CPU: AMD FX-8150
MOBO: ASUS M5A97
RAM: 2 x Kingston 4GB DDR3-1600 / PC3-12800 KGX1600C9D3/4GX
GPU: AMD RADEON HD 5830
OS: Windows 10 x64

Any ideas?

Hi everyone there!I've been visiting this very interesting site for a long time now as a guest and I finally decided to register to discuss my problem to see if someone could help me...
My problems start from last July.It was then when my graphic card went off and I had to replace it.It was in the guarantee, so I took it to the shop where I bought it to replace it.But I immediately thought that was a good chance to make a general upgrade. To make it short when I took my computer back from the service after a while (some hours) I saw the first bsod in my life.Since then I have experienced dosens of them.I took it back several times.I changed and rechanged all the stuff (mobo, graphic card 3 times and hard disc) except from the memories that I was told they were tested and worked fine and the pcu.
The last time I took it back was 3 days ago.The first day worked just fine! The second day when it booted after a while it appeared this bsod: ''***STOP:0X0000008E (etc, etc)'' AND ''***win32k.sys-AdressBF8BCFD6 '' base at BF800000,Datestamp 48025f2a.The third same as the second after the boot it appeared this bsod: ''PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA'' AND ''STOP:00000050 (etc, etc)''.The last BSOD was presented in the past at least one more time.At this point I'm really frustated!I've done several formats since from July when I first have had the first bsod but the problem still remains...I would ... Hello all,

I am having trouble with a laptop. I think the problem is the hard disk drive but wanted to get someone else input first. I have a Acer Aspire 3620 running Windows XP Home Edition. If the laptop is off for a day or two it will crash 3 or 4 times and each time with a different BSOD. With each boot/reboot it will ask to do a check disk every time. After the 3rd or 4th time the laptop boots up fine but could crash again at any time with a different error. I have formatted and reinstalled windows once already and also did a memtest and got no errors. I can try different RAM if I have to but will have to wait a day or two to try it since I already tried to laptop today. So what do you guys/gals think? is it the HDD or could it be something else?
