IE 6 very slow loading pages and won't load secure pages

Q: IE 6 very slow loading pages and won't load secure pages

Hi newbie here so go easy on me

My mum has a realtively newly built PC (about 2 weeks old), and has XP Professional installed along with Norton Antivirus 2003.

She is using dial-up internet with an external modem, and although her default homepage (bbc) loads straight away after that browsing becomes progressively slower and slower. Some pages do not load up at all after a while and she is forced to turn off her connection and try again. She cannot access any secure sites at all (for her internet banking and buying things). She has cleared her cache to no avail.

I have been told to see if a firewall is blocking secure ports 443, 84 and/or 8443. I'm not sure how to check that? I'm not even sure she has a firewall installed at all?

Should she try Mozilla Firefox? Should I install Norton?

I've checked her dialup internet provided (lineone/tiscali) and there appears to be no problems?

Preferred Solution: IE 6 very slow loading pages and won't load secure pages

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

When you say they won't load, what exactly happens? Does it give an error message of any kind or just hang on a blank page?

Hi,

I have a Sony Vaio VPCEE2M1E laptop and a 3 network mobile broadband dongle connection.

Recently I have experienced problems with web pages not loading in Google Chrome and IE8 - inparticular web pages such as www.yahoo.co.uk and www.facebook.com. A lot of other pages to the internet are very slow to load.

Having a dongle is quite a slow connection but this web page problem is getting worse.

Please can anyone help?

Thanks

Hi,

I appear to be having trouble with my firefox browser.

My operating system is Windows 8.1. I have an Acer Aspire V3-772G which I bought some 18 months ago.

System details:

Processor: Intel® Core i7-4202MQ 2.2GHz with Turbo Boost up to 3.2GHz
Installed Memory (RAM) 16.00 GB DDR3 L Memory
System  type: 64-bit Operating, x64- based processor

A few days ago my firefox browser, which for no apparent reason at all, just seemed to slow to a stupendously very slow loading of pages. I had recently just been working on an issue in which I posted a thread regarding whether there was a possible virus/malware after google chrome terminated with the following message from Hitman Pro Alert:

Attack Intercepted
'Google Chrome 49' has been terminated to prevent execution of malicious code. Please check your computer for malware and software updates

As it happened, it appeared to be because of a conflict somewhere in the Google Chrome, Trusteer Rapport and Hitman Pro Alert combination, and so the only way was to change the settings on Hitman Pro Alert as advised and shown in my thread:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/611273/possible-virus-or-malaware/

However, there was no malware or virus detected by my own Avast or Malwareware bytes tools, and the tools used as instructed in the thread also showed my system to have none. Also, google chrome works fine, and my computer has not slowed in any way. My fir... Read more

Hi,My particulars:Firefox 2.0.0.4Windows XP SP2 Home EditionOutlook ExpressDial-up on a laptop*Not* on a network and no router (laptop plugged into phone jack for dial-up)My Firefox is set to *not* allow cookies (though I have exceptions for sites like bleepingcomputer.com, and the library, etc.). I also block pop-ups in Firefox settings. I use Firefox for all web browsing. I only use IE for Windows Update. In IE, I have it set to high security for internet, intranet, medium for trusted sites (which is Windows Update) and Restricted Sites is set to the default custom level (which deny/prompts everything). None of that probably matters, since I use Firefox for browsing, but I thought I'd mention it just in case.I honestly don't remember if it's been like this all the time, but at least semi-lately (last couple months), I've noticed that when I'm connecting to a secure webpage (like the library logon or Amazon.com logon, etc.), it takes a REALLY long time for the page to come up. Sometimes a minute or more it seems like. I know secure sites take longer to load (especially on dial-up, right?), but that seems really really long...Any thoughts as to why this would be...?(I suppose it's possible a setting in Windows could have been changed by me that would cause this...? But I have no idea what that could be...)Any help is appreciated -- thanks! Edit/clarification: It's usually the first page that takes so long to load up. A:Internet Explorer won't load Secure Pages

Check that ALL your settings are correct. From IE:

Tools > Internet Options

First up, click on the security tab, and then, making sure internet is selected, click defauly level in the box below. Onto privacy, set the slider bar to medium. Lastly, click on advanced, scroll down to security and make sure that Check for publishers certificate revocation, Check for signatures on dowloaded programs, Enable intergrated Windows authentication, Enable profile assistant, Use SSL 2.0, Use SSL 3.0, Use TLS 1.0, Warn about invalid site certificates and warn if form submittal is being redirected are checked. Guys, I've been searching and trying solutions for hours and hours now. Helping out a friend with IE8 on Windows XP (yes I know it's not supported, but let's please stay on topic here). IE8 won't navigate to secure sites for some reason. It just says the web page cannot be displayed. I can't even get to Google. I had to download Mozilla Firefox from Bing to even get this working.

I've tried a LIST of solutions. Here are some of them:
Tried resetting IE back to factory defaults.
Tried disabling/enabling SSL/TLS protocols from the Advanced Settings.
Tried sfc /scannow.
Tried re-registering DLLs as suggested by Microsoft.
Verified IP and DNS settings to ensure that it wasn't causing any problems.
Verified that IE isn't configured to use a proxy.
Verified that no anti-virus software is running (none is installed).
Tried disabling Windows Firewall just for the hell of it.
I'm out of ideas here. Does anyone have any other possible suggestions to add to this list of things that I've tried already?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Recently, I am suddenly sometimes unable to load web pages or otherwise download information over the internet. When I first open a page it will sometimes load completely but usually it will fail to load the entire contents of the page. Opening a new tab in the browser and trying to load the same page again fails completely. If I close all tabs and try to reload the page afresh it sometimes works.

I am also noticing constant low level internet traffic, both sending and receiving.

I'm running Windows XP SP3 in a multi-boot environment. My browser of choice is firefox but the same thing happens in IE.

I don't have this problem on any other machine on the network, nor do I have the same problem in Windows 7 on the same machine.

I have scanned all drives using a fully updated (today) Malwarebytes from my Windows 7 install with no infections detected. I run Zonealarm and AVG under Windows XP.

I have tried clearing internet files.

I have tried running Windows XP in safe mode with networking only and the problem still occurs.

I have taken a HJT log just in case. I'm pretty sure it's clean though.

I forgot to mention, I can ping google.com consistently so I don't think it's a DNS issue.

A Non-browser example

When I try to update AVG I see the "Dowload Speed" starts high then slowly tails down to bytes/sec and gradually drops to 0 bytes/sec

I hope it's something simple!

Hi to all.
Since yesterday, nearly every time I load a web page it either doesn't stop loading or sometimes doesn't even load at all. At first I thought that the problem was just with Chrome, but I've since tried Firefox and Explorer and get the same issue. I've tried scanning for viruses, malware and even ran Boostspeed to see if it will solve the problem, but nothing has worked.
I don't know why this has happened all of a sudden, I've not made any significant changes or installed anything new so I'm stumped. I have the fastest fiber optic package my ISP has, so it isn't down to not having enough bandwidth.
Is there anything that I can try to resolve this problem?
You'll have to excuse my ignorance as I know a little bit about computers but not a great deal.
Can I try resetting my router with the pinhole at the back, or will that cause me to lose settings, which I won't be able to restore ,and not be able to connect to the internet at all? (I know the routers password)

Sorry if this is a bit long winded. Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks.

Suddenly today I'm having a problem loading web pages. All was normal yesterday. When opening my default FireFox browser to my home page or loading a bookmarked page, the browser hangs and will not load the page. Either the page takes an extended time to load, or it will not load at all unless I click the "stop" and "refresh" buttons in the address window. This problem is especially evident when trying to load a page with graphics.

For instance, when trying to load various pages from "Wikimedia Commons", the text for any particular page appears but thumbnails will not. Some websites load almost normally, and some will load only partially or not at all, and only after having to click the "stop" and "refresh" buttons.

Once a web page is finally loaded, the animation on the page tab continues to display the "loading" icon, (a spinning circle). Only by clicking the "stop" button does it finish.

This behavior is also evident while using the Google Chrome browser I also have installed, so this is happening in more than one browser.

My default Browser in FireFox 14.0, and my OS is Win Vista Home Premium SP2. I have multiple add on's for FireFox, among them Abine's Do Not Track Plus 2.2.1. All windows updates are current. I connect to cable internet through ethernet.

Could I possibly be infected? I am having problems with accessing any and all webpages. At first, I thought it was just a Mozilla issue, but the same problems occur in Google Chrome and IE. I will type in a URL and press enter and sometimes it will take forever to load, and if I click on the link again, it will bring it up instantly. It seems as if it is stalling. And other times, if I click on the link for a second time, it will say "done" on the bottom left hand side, but it will certainly not be done! I have been having this problem for weeks now and it is driving me crazy!
I have run Spybot, Adaware, Spyware Doctor, Malwarebytes, my AVG antivirus scan, and the free Symantec one on the website. Nothing has been found wrong!
I tried restoring my computer to 4 different restore points but they were all unsuccessful.
I tried uninstalling Zone Alarm, thinking that was causing the problem, but nothing changed. I had k9 web protection on my computer, but uninstalled it weeks ago and I am still having problems. I have the same problem running my wireless or using an ethernet cable; on my network and at a friend's house.

I suppose the title says it all, my computer has some sort of infection where every search in google in both firefox and internet explorer redirect the searches to random pages. Additionally, typing in certain addresses simply won't load where I know the page should work, such as certain links on microsoft.com. Furthermore, I have enabled Automatic Updates and it tells me that it is not enabled even though it clearly is in the settings and going to the update page through internet explorer simply does not work. I have read through various other forums here at bleepingcomputer.com and followed their instructions but nothing has fixed the problem so I figured I'd post as well and start fresh. hello all

i have started noticing "hijacked pages,"

and that (so far, only when using "chrome," which is outdated - NOT by choice but because i am stuck with windows vista and GOOGLE will not longer support it...),

sometimes chrome will "hang" when attempting to perform operations such as "clear browsing data,

and then if i attempt to close chrome, it will make it so that system processes(?) such as my toolbar, ctrl+alt+del/task mgr, and restart will not work, forcing me to need to manually power off my computer,

and now as of today, most pages are not loading ("err_connection_failed" in chrome, but ALSO IN FIREFOX a lot of pictures in pages are not loading),

so i fear i have malware...

I have had norton installed and ran a scan, no problems detected. Now i uninstalled it. Please let me know what to do now. I am having issues lately with Firefox. This isnt constant but happens intermittently waiting to load for 10 minutes then loading and working well for a few minutes before slowing to a crawl again. All pages load fine in IE when I test it at the same time.

Test pages were:
myspace
google
wikipedia
192.168.1.1 - router page

All 4 showed loadtime in firefox. I started firefox in safe mode and also had the same issues with wait times. I dont know why it is just firefox and why it happens intermittently.

A related issue is music or youtube videos would stop playing after I played my first song or video. With youtube videos, the whole video downloads but would freeze after 2 seconds of playing. Works fine in IE, issue only happens in Firefox but corrects when I close and reopen browser.

Maybe reinstalling browser would fix it, but I would like to know why it is happening.

I am not running any firewall.
I am running 2 codec packs, ffdshow and vista codec pack.
cant think of anything else.

Which version of Firefox are you using? Have you tried nuking your browser cookies and cache (from within Firefox)?

Peace...

Hey chrisdab,

Sounds like it could be anything. I think you'd be better off with a new install than waste time trying to isolate the problems.

If you're running any nightlies you should expect some backward steps at times. What version of Firefox are you running? (Help > about)

Strange problem that started six weeks ago.PC works fine, no problem with E Mails or any programmes BUT IE and Firefox are slow, and when I select a new page from the browser (not a favourite) it takes 2 to 3 minutes to load, but hitting F5 and the page is immediately viewable (Mostly)Using Safari is better, but the whole surfing thing has become a nightmare.I have restored system (strange I could ONLY go back 14 days), deleted every add on and anything loaded in the last 8 weeks (improved a bit), run IO Bit deep clean, Malware etc no issue. HJT shows nothing strange, nor does housecall. Laptop works fine on same connection.Cleaned PC, spoke kindly to it.Why do I need to refresh page, what am I missing.?? Even when a page has loaded FF still usually shows it is loading data. Around 6 weeks ago, latest FF updated which included a FREE McAffee scanner, which I removed immediately, as soon as I realised it existed.and Windows essential updates. Removed Flash players, Adobe and PDF stuff and reinstalled latest, still takes time to load images.HP Pavillion Running Vista Proffesional4GB RamLatest FirefoxIO Bit Malware ProIO Bit Advanced System Care Pro 4AVG Free Anti VirusLatest IEJust an idea would be great, it is driving me crazy.

I recently bought a new laptop, and it was horribly laggy when I played games. I did everything I could to improve the performance speed for it (uninstalled programs I didn't need, deleted unwanted files, Disk Clean Up, scanned Disk for errors, Disk defragment, scanned for spyware/adware/viruses, clean registry, blocked some programs from starting when Vista is turned on). The games stopped lagging, but now when I browse the internet on IE or Firefox, the webpages loads very slowly. Some programs won't start, like my Gunbound Revolution game. I clicked on the GBR game and it opens up a IE window to the page for me to log in. When I log in, I click "Play Live" to start the game. The "Unidentified Program" window pops up and I click allow, but the game never starts. What can I do to fix these problems?

My computer specs are

Windows Vista Home Premium
Manufacturer: Hewlett-Packard
Model: HP Pavillion dv9500 Notebook PC
Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual-Core Processor TK-53 1.70 GHz
Memory (RAM): 1983 MB
System type: 32-bit Operating System
Space: 103 GB

A:Slow Loading Pages

Try running IE7 in no add-ins mode.If no add-ons mode fixes your problem, then you are going to have to try and work out what third party product is causing your problem by disabling one add-on at a time, restarting IE, then testing. If disabling one doesn't work, re-enable it, restart IE, and try the next one. You can also have a look at this article called Help! My computer is slow!

2 basics things come to mind, not enough RAM in the computer and/or your Internet connection?

How much RAM do you have? I see possibly have WinXP, I will not run it without at least 512 MB of RAM.
What type of internet connection do you have?

Try pinging the web page you are downloading or your providers web page when things slow down. If the ping times are erratic and more than 200 ms then you have some issues with your Internet connection.

Also try a download speed test when the downloads are good and when they are bad. This will give you a comparison. Here are a few good links for the speed tests:

Its quite probably nothing your end. It may well be a problem at CS server end. Have you tried calling them and discussing the problem?
I advise you give their customer services dept a call first, rather than the tech help number , as the tech numbers are usually quite expensive, and the Cust Serv might be able to tell you first if there has been a reported prob their end.
Good luck

Download WinPFind
Right Click the Zip Folder and Select "Extract All"
Extract it somewhere you will remember like the Desktop
Dont do anything with it yet!

Reboot into Safe Mode
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Doubleclick WinPFind.exe
Click " Configure Scan Options"
Select " Run Add ONs" and then select ALL the options in the box below it, Press Apply
Now Click "Start Scan"
It will scan the entire System, so please be patient!
Once the Scan is Complete
Reboot back to Normal Mode!
Go to the WinPFind folder
Locate WinPFind.txt
Place those results in the next post!. It will be too big to post so you will need to attach it to your reply

Hi I was just wondering if someone could help me out here.
During websurfing I've found that some of the websites I try to surf take an extremely long time to load. Its not my internet connection but I believe it is the type of programming used at that website. An example is the official San Jose Sharks web page. It easily takes up 30 secs to load. This load time occurs even after I've loaded it once, minimized the window than maximize it. It still takes 30 secs again. Does anybody know how to fix this problem, cause right now I've just stopped going to these types of sites.
Thanks

I have the same problem: Slow loading pages. In fact, new pages often time out. I'm on a (confirmed) 2 Mbps Download connection. I've cleared caches, tried multiple browsers (Firefox, Chrome, MSIE), and changed Anti Virus applications. Windows Firewall is enabled, but I have the same problem when it's disabled. One other quirky clue: some web pages are drawn with only the HTML. No CSS is used. I suspect that's just a result of the slow download. Bottom Line: SOME thing is getting in the way of my web pages loading. Any advice would be appreciated.

You are connected directly to the Motorola Surfboard modem? By ethernet or USB?

You've confirmed your actual download speed with Speedtest.net or similar, right?

Can you try another computer on your connection or your computer on a different network?

Hi

A friend of mine's problem started recently when they had a fake malware warning message. They ran a stopzilla anti spyware scan and without buying the product the message has disappeared. However their internet connection remains very slow.

I attach a HijackThis log in case there is anything obvious i should remove for them. Would appreciate some assurance everything is ok.
