Losing individual files and entire folders

Q: Losing individual files and entire folders

I have been scanning up photos in Windows 8 and now windows 8.1. Unfortunately I forget and left the system open for more than 4 hours and it upgraded itself. At any rate in going back to check some of the photos I had scanned, they are no longer in their folders and have disappeared completely. I did searches, etc and nothing. I was also in the middle of scanning a bunch of photos when suddenly the message came up that the folder I was scanning to was no longer there. An hour later I finally located the entire folder and scanned photos in the recycle bin. It just went there itself.

What can be done to prevent this. I scan and toss the photos but now I find that they are disappearing days down the line.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Is there a faster way to password-protect folders than the ones I already know, such as AxCrypt or putting in a zip with 7Zip? I have a lot of huge files and it would take too long.

I do NOT need powerful encryption for these particular files. No hacker is ever going to get them; it's only to keep out my roommates who use my account on my computer. For various reasons setting up separate accounts is not an option.

I"m wondering if there's some way that's not as secure as AxCrypt because that's overkill for me but would still add a password and do it quicker.

A:Faster way to password-protect individual files/folders

I have installed software that can encrypt/ decrypt individual files/ folders or multiple files/ folders. It's pretty easy to use via drag/ drop folders/ files that you want to encrypt (accepts multiples) or select via right click context menu.

Right click a file/ folder to encrypt/ decryptDrag 'n' Drop multiples to encrypt/ decryptEncryted files have .pcr extensionIf you use the main program window to decrypt files or multiple files it totally and permanently removes encryption and restores the default file extension.

If you decrypt via click and open - you are asked for a password to open the file and it remains encrypted when you close the file.

I've read through various posts ... didn't see this:

I have, or rather HAD my entire emails filed in OE 6 ... by subject, client etc ... altogether ~ 14 years worth.

One day I was reviewing my emails and this innocuous message pops up ... I had never seen it before and only recently have I seen it again. "To Free up disk space, Outlook Express can compact messages" Yes or No ... STUPID ME clicks yes ... because it appeared to be innocuous ... it all happened so fast I was stunned to comprehend what actually happened!

As quickly as I clicked yes ... just as quickly, my ENTIRE FILE FOLDER OF ~ 14 YEARS OF EMAILS - evaporated! Gone. Disappeared. Like I opened OE for the very first time!

I didn't interrupt anything because it vanished in lightning speed.

I didn't archive them. I didn't delete my entire file folder system or move them to the recycling.
No one else uses my computer and this happened RIGHT BEFORE MY EYES!

I have used OE6 since it came out (tried OUTLOOK and hate it) I had a similar problem about 2 years prior but my brother-in-law was able to walk me through finding the file and repopulating it. This time it was NO WHERE TO BE FOUND!

At one point, I could see a file that had nearly a G ... when I placed my mouse over it .... it said there was nothing in the file!

I had never compacted messages before, nor had this stinking message appeared.

No I didn't back up .... I am among the many that haven't or don't... Read more

hello Ten Forums,
Is there a way to send a picture - dropping into a site or sending in an email without
having the entire album embedded along with a single picture. I have tested by sending to myself. The received email may look like a single pic but one click and the entire album is there. I did not have this problem with any windows version except windows 10.
I have one other problem with windows ten. I am getting a mail sub system in my Microsoft outlook email with emails from and to people I don't know and have not written . What is this?
I cannot reach my host at present to discuss this.
I am considering reverting to windows 7 within a month but am concerned incase I lose important files.
I cannot even save everything on the cloud because the offer for cloud is for windows 8 and it seems I am on wondiws 10.
I dare not cause another problem. Please help with one or more of these issues. Many thanks. Lam

Sure there is, I do individual photos all the time. When you come to select the ones you want to send, make sure you click on the actual photo and not the folder.

With regard to your second problem, have you run an Antivirus scan? Looks like your email may have been compromised.

I have been using file history for about three years in Win 8.1. I have file history set to keep saved versions three months because originally it was recopying every picture and filling up my external HDD.

I recently have moved some folders within the picture group of folders. However, the moved folders still appeared in their original location as well in their new locations. I ran a cleanup . Now the old folders are gone, but the moved folders are empty. The contents of the folders did not move.

1. Why are moved folder empty?

2. Should I create a complete new file history backup?

3. If so, how?

Thank you.

Hi guys,

I would like to sort the files in a particular folder by, say, date modified, but NOT have this setting applied to other folders in my computer. For example, I would want the files in the other folders to be sorted by name. However, I can't seem to be able to do this in Windows 8 - changing the sort settings for a particular folder applies it to every other folder.

Is there a way to customize the sort settings for individual folders without having it applied across the board? I recall being able to do it in Windows Vista/7, but can't seem to find the option in Windows 8.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

A:How do I set sort settings for individual folders?

Hello Desaque, and welcome to Eight Forums.

The tutorial below can help show you how to set your folder views per folder. However, it sounds like you are in a library instead of the actual folder location. In a library, all included folders share the same folder view. Only in the folder's actual location will you be able to have separate folder views. For example, "Music" library versus "C:\Users\(user-name)\My Music" folder.

I just want to clear it here that I want the folder so that it can't be deleted in any way, Right Click/

If it matters (I know sometimes it does) the file is located on my Desktop.
I also have unrestricted access to everything as the owner of the computer.

I have some software that can offer what I want done but it's a bit excessive in it's protection methods.
I understand there is a way to use registry edits to do what I want to do?
I have already hidden the Recent Documents on the Start Menu using Registry edits.

Does anyone know of a program where you can lock individual outlook folders in Outlook 2000 (Win98 ME system)? I share the computer with the family and would like to be able to lock specific folders in Outlook. Ideally, the program would allow for delivery of specified email to this locked folder and then only be accessible via password.

Outlook folders are not available, per my knowledge, in Windows Explorer... thus protection software to lock windows folders does not seem to work since you cannot access the folders to lock them.

Any help on this would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Apologies if I have chosen the wrong forum here, maybe software?

OK, I have all my photos stored under their respective years on my Win 10 PC under "Pictures" being say 1973 right through to 2019.

I also use OneDrive to back them up.

Thought I'd do some cleaning out today and shock horror, every single folder has it's entire contents copied, so instead of having 100 pics in 1988, I have 200 and the same for every other folder!

It now looks like:

Holidays.jpg
Holidays.jpg (Copy) for every wretched one!

Obviously the same on OneDrive .....................

So my total of some two and a half thousand pictures are now double that!

It seems to just happened "suddenly" as I haven't been near then for a couple of months!

What could possibly have caused this and more the worry, how do I get rid of all the copies, please don't say one by one per folder............. don't think I could handle that!

Any advice much appreciated!

I recently suffered a hrd disk failure and I was forced to extract the data from the faulty disk using a Linux distro (which managed to access all the files just fine while windows complained the partitions were unformatted). I then incorporated the files into my new Windows 7 installation and soon found out I could not access the files because I didn't have the necessary permissions. Since changing permissions for 1000+ files one by one is rather tedious I browsed this forum for an alternate solution and found out I could change file permissions for a folder 1 or more levels higher, including all files and folders inside said top level folder.

While applying new permissions to my <username> folder I was prompted to confirm if I wanted the Appdata folder to be changed as well. I really didn't know, but decided against. Even so, since I made the change I am having problems installing programs (can only do so as admin) and several programs have started informing of problems like:

Failed to create temporary folder:
C:\Users\<username>\Appdata\Local\Temp\<foldername>

My questions therefore are as follows:

- what permissions do I need to set for the individual folders from <username> down? Are they all supposeed o be owned by the user?
- what can I do to correct the current behaviour of my installation and to regain control over installing programs as a user?

Libraries are virtual folders not virtual files so to answer your question, no. Instead maybe use a symbolic link (made with mklink with the command line) and link the file in a certain folder. Or just put it in a folder already set to the library.

Where can I get specific individual .dll files? How difficult is it to update a .dll file?

I have been downloading and running various .dll repair programs that claim to fix everything. Unfortunately, none of these programs have fixed or replaced the .dll files my System File Checker lists as corrupted and not reprojectable.

I am looking fo these specific files used by Windows Defender in Windows 7:

MpEvMsg.dll.mui
MsMpRes.dll.mui
MpAsDesc.dll.mui

I have never manually installed a .dll file, but I learn quickly and know how to follow directions. Can someone point me to a "how-to" instruction list for replacing corrupted .dll files? Is it a relatively simple task once I have good .dll files? I would rather not have to pay $200 to someone like the Best Buy Geek Squad just to make what hopefully are minor system changes. You can extract them from the win 7 install media,

If you don't have one you can download one here,

I just used 7-Zip and found those files in the install.wim, you have to grab the right folder once inside but it's all explained in the tutorial.

I would strongly urge you not to password protect individual files because you could forget the password and lose access to the files. this forum is full of locked threads because of users wanting help with forgotten passwords when they were trying to protect files.

I have played around with the backup functionality; I know how to backup a system image. What I cannot figure out is how to backup individual files; when I configure the backup and drilling down into the folders, the individual files are not shown.

In XP, I backup my Outlook .pst every day (I work from home so this is important). I had a NTBACKUP job set that would backup only the .pst file every day...no problem to set up.

When trying to configure W7 backup I can drill down to C:\Users\Mike\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook but the only thing that's shown in the Outlook checkbox window is "Accounts."

The .pst is not in Accounts, it's in the root of the Outlook folder.

How can I configure the backup utility to be more granular? Thanks for the help.

A:Backup doesn't allow individual files to be b'd up?

Hello Michaeld,

This may be able to allow you to select individual files.

My wedding photographer put all of the pictures she took on four disks, two of them are importing correctly, but two of them show data on the disks, but no individual JPG files. I tried importing through windows live photo gallery and finding through my computer, I also tried the open folder to view files, everything says there are no picture files on this disk, even though we have viewed them using another computer.

A:CD shows data, but not individual picture files

Welcome to the TSG forum.

Photographers own the rights to print the pictures .. And usually don't give you the readable Images that the camera took.
They probably have proprietary software to read the pictures ..
The discs you can't read are probably what you'd take to get them printed.
The images you can see .. Are low resolution copies that probably won't make good prints ..For previews only.

They don't want you to print them yourself or have anyone else do it ..They want to charge you.
What's the extension (file type) of the data files in the Disc that you can't view ???

Does anyone know of a program that can zip files individually, like in batch? I mean, every program I find just zips the files all into one, but I want to zip a folder full of hundreds of individual files into individual zips for each file. I don't want to zip the entire folder into one zip, but each file into a zip itself. This is murder to search for on google.

I work with autistic children and i have a bunch of VBscripts set up to say things through the speakers like "I want juice". I was wonder it it was possible to associate a photo with these files so when they are viewed as thumbnails you would see a picture of a Juice box. Other scripts would be "I want cookie" or "I want Toy".

Below is an example of the script i have in a notepad with .vbs extension:

Dim Message, sapi
message="I Want Juice"
Set sapi=Createobject("sapi.spvoice")
sapi.speak message

A:Is it possible to assign photos as Icons to individual files?

Hi Daysaved, welcome to TSF.

You need to re-size the photo to about 20x20 pixels, or any standard icon resolution.
Save the file as .ico

You can now right click your file, go to 'Properties'. Under the 'shortcut' tab click 'Change Icon'. Browse to your newly created .ico file and select it.

This should work for all types of files.

The drive on my MacBook failed recently and I really need to get my data back. I am hesitant to take my hard drive in for repair/recovery for fear that, somehow, the techs will be able to see the individual files in a dmg file I keep on my laptop. They will be extracting data by taking my drive apart (to bypass bad sectors?), rather than by just using software. What do Dmg files look like from a tech's perspective? Can they see file names? Preview images? Or, will they simply see a dmg file? Thanks for your time!

HI  I did a one-click backup of my Yoga 3 pro machine when I did a fresh load. It worked like a charm and was convenient. I now, however, need to get some individual files from that backup but cannot find how to do so.  I have checked several forums but have not come right. Please, can you offer some assistance?

Windows XP Pro SP3
I have 4 WD external HDD's purchased between 2004 and 2008. On these harddrives are various files, including but not limited to the following:
+backups for my primary hd
+tv shows
+movies
+program installers
+personal movie collection used for editting
I have found that certain files cause windows explorer to crash - be they movies, tv shows, installer files, files on backup, etc. - when highlighted and cause Dr. Watson to go bonkers. There seems to be no connection: files with similar sources, extensions, sizes, use dates, names, pathnames, etc. seem to work fine. In all there are just over 20,000 files, of which maybe 30 cause this problem. It is possible in transfers they were just simply improperly transferred (causing pieces of the file to be lost forever), but there is a file I KNOW that happened to and Dr. Watson never went bonkers and Explorer never crashed when I selected it; it was an .avi of "Beetlejuice" whose transfer was terminated before completion, and all it does when selected is simply not play in WMP. Any ideas?

I just installed Norton 360 and to my surprise it does not appear possible to select an individual drive or file for scanning. From what I can tell you can you must scan all drives installed on the computer. Does anyone else know if there is a way to select individual drives or files?

A:Scanning individual files and drives in Norton 360,

I can't get rid of CyberDefender or MyIdentityDefender. I don't like it because it severely limits the information that comes up on the web to choose from. I've tried to remove it with Control Panel Add or Remove programs. It kind of flashes real quick and then just stays there. Some blogs recommended using certain free (or so they said were free but were not) downloads of spyware removers. The problem with these is that I am at risk of having it remove something my job downloaded, some software that works with microsoft word and then I can't work (at home). I had to do Go Back To an Earlier date on the computer to undo this. I need to know what the specific files are I need to remove and how to find them in the computer. Sorry this question was so wordy. I'm new at this.
