windows live vs steam vs Origin ?

Q: windows live vs steam vs Origin ?

Are they all OK or are they as bad as the other ? I think I rather play w/o them but it is not possible anymore, just too bad.

Preferred Solution: windows live vs steam vs Origin ?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: windows live vs steam vs Origin ?

Doesn't windows live work with steam games? I got the steam version of GTA 4 and it would sign me into windows live so I could see when my XBox friends were online. (Bonus XBox points for playing on PC. )

Never really used it much so can't say for quality, but I imagine Win Live would be for the XBoxers to stay in touch.
I'm a recovering WoW-a-holic so only know Team speak and Ventrilo.

I recently downloaded and finished playing Fallout 3 via Steam. Never having come into contact with Games for Windows LIVE before, I didn't think to sign into my LIVE/360 account before I started playing - who knows if that actually has anything to do with this.

OK, so I finished it, loved it, and decided to try 'The Pitt' DLC. I downloaded the Games for Windows client, purchased the DLC, downloaded it and now it says it's installed. I then started Fallout, figure out that in order to access the DLC I need to be signed into LIVE, which I did. It installs an update for Fallout and then restarts the game (still scratching my head as to why this update wasn't available via Steam . . . maybe it doesn't apply when the game is being played independently of LIVE? probably beside the point) and then asks for my CD key . . . never had to input this before, but I pull it out from the Steam game properties no prob, input it and everything seems fine. Now I can sign into LIVE when I start Fallout which I purchased via Steam (layers and layers of useless, poorly designed interfaces and DRM, but that's another story, it just amuses me).

Here's the problem (finally, right?) - After starting Fallout and signing into Live, I can see that 'The Pitt' is available under the downloads section of the main Fallout menu, but when I click on it nothing happens. It just makes a clicking sound, but doesn't actually start the game up AT ALL. Soo... Read more

A:Fallout 3 The Pitt on PC via Steam and Games for Windows LIVE

Oh crappit. I think I just figured out the problem and it's BIG. The DLCs aren't separate games, they're extensions of the game as a whole, meaning that I travel to Pittsburgh as a separate side-mission, yet I'm still playing Fallout 3 proper? That's it, isn't it? I pray somebody tells me otherwise, b/c I played through the game WITHOUT being signed into LIVE, which means I can't access my game saves while I AM signed into it. Suck, suck, suck! Ok, so if I'm right, then the question becomes: is there any way to import my offline game saves into my LIVE account? Probably not, but it's worth asking I figure.

Hi, can someone please help as EA aren't helping me!

Origin was working fine until yesterday. Then it came up with this error code:

The procedure entry point _except1 could not be located in the dynamic link library C:\Program\Origin\Origin.exe.

So I uninstalled Origin, several times and followed EVERYTHING they told me to do, manual uninstall, do it with no anti virus etc. I even tried to download from a third party website, which did progress more in the installation but still failed with even more error messages!

I have had Microsoft access my computer and they have also tried everything and have confirmed that nothing at all is wrong with my laptop (which is what EA was trying to say).

Its really frustrating now and I hope someone can help please!

I have a Toshiba laptop and I am running windows 10.

It was compatible with windows 10 as it was working for a week or so. It did keep crashing but I changed screen resolution and was fine.

I will appreciate any help, Thanks!

Monday night after returning from work, several problems cropped up on my computer all at the same time after I restarted it. My computer had been running somewhat slow before then, but virus scans didn't detect anything wrong. Here are the problems that I've been having since I restarted my comp:
The first thing I noticed was that my monitor's resolution changed from its standard 1024x768 to 800x600, which made everything appear big and wouldn't fit my wallpaper properly. Also, all my icons were reset to their default positions. I managed to fix these problems and my screen resolution and icon arrangement has stayed normal, except from when I tried a system restore.
My computer has been running very slowly, far more so than before Monday night. It seems like it takes five times as long to load anything (programs, web pages, etc.). It also takes far more time than normal to restart my computer (it even failed to reboot once, and I was forced to unplug and replug my computer to get it to start up).
Whenever I scroll down the page in any window (in IE, Word, Frontpage, or any other program, it does so slowly and there's this weird "ripple" or "wave" effect to the scrolling motion. It does this whether I use a window's scroll bar or my mouse's scroll wheel. Also, a similar problem happens whenever I drag a window across the screen.

Okay, the title sounds vague, but I can give more information.

I am currently running Windows Vista on my HP Pavilion laptop. About a month ago, I started having an issue when Vista launched. After all of the pre-load process had finished executing, I got a message that said that Windows Explorer had stopped responding, and was restarting. Then a whole slew of programs and Windows services went through the same process. Everything from McAfee to my touchpad management software either restarted or stopped all together, and then the computer rebooted.

Now whenever I start up the computer, I still get the same problem with the following two processes: Windows Explorer, and Task Scheduler Engine. The computer does not go into a forced reboot anymore.

Certain programs have not worked properly since. The most notable are IE, Windows Live Messenger, and Yahoo Messenger. IE behaves like I have no active connection, and I can't sign into either of the messengers. Oddly enough, Firefox works just fine - no problems connecting to the net and opening pages.

As I am the only one who uses this computer, I have no idea where this could have come from.

If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.

Lately I've had a few issues with my computer, it got slower, and some games didnt install properly due to directX errors. So after looking at some forums for battlefield 3 directX errors I read that uninstalling Origin would be a good idea to fix the problem. While that was going on, first the mouse stopped working (keeping in mind it does that sometimes without there being a problem with the computer), then the screen froze entirely. It came back for a few seconds afterwards, then it froze again and i got the BSOD.

It was set to automatical reboot, so I couldnt read what the error was.

Now the problem I'm having is that, when I start the computer I get these options: Start computer in safe mode , Safe mode with internet, Safe mode with leadtext or whatever and Start windows Normal. Which ever I choose will fail.

Choosing the Normal startup will cause the computer to get stuck on the windows login screen with the wobbly win logo.

Choosing the Safe mode (with and without internet) causes it to stuck, it seems to not be able to load some files.

I've tried running the repair windows option, but the screen went black and nothing else happend.

Not sure if many of you noticed, but post Windows Insider build 14936, the Steam overlay would refuse to work with 64 bit games. Starting with the public beta build of Steam that is available today, that issue is resolved.

You can opt in to Steam beta builds by going to Steam's settings>Account and clicking the "Change" button under the Beta Participation header. Select "Steam Beta Update" from the dropdown menu, hit OK and then hit the button to restart Steam.

As with any beta builds, you may experience bugs. I haven't run into any showstoppers in the time I've been running Steam betas, but your mileage may vary.

Hi guys,

I've just started a new job and with it I get a nice shiny new computer. Since my netbook has the computing power of a calculator I haven't been able to play my favorite Steam games for a couple of months. Now I have a job, I wanna start playing these games!

I installed Steam after a fresh reformat and installation of Windows XP Professional SP2. Once installed and self-updated, I get the following popup

The first thing I did was check Steam support, where they have the following two solutions (https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=9672-LWMF-6128):

Multiple installations of Steam said:

1. Browse to the Steam installation folder (C:\Program Files\Steam by default) for the Steam installation you would like to move.
2. Move the steamapps folder from the Steam installation folder to your desktop.
3. Review the Uninstalling Steam topic for instructions to uninstall Steam (this must be done to remove your old Steam installation settings from the Windows Registry).
4. Review the Installing Steam topic for instructions to re-install Steam to the desired location.
5. Move the steamapps folder into the new Steam installation folder to copy all of your downloaded game content, settings, and saved games to the new location.
6. Start Steam and log in to your existing Steam account to confirm that the move was successful.

My thread was closed and I was told to follow the new instructions which I had read already. I am using Windows Vista 64bit and DDS is not compatible with this OS. I did a GMER scan only being able to select the three default options and results turned up with zero results and no log.

Here is the original message for review unless there is another set of instructions for 64bit users.

I have been testing a small application called Alpha Blender which enables me to set windows transparency case to case. I originally did a single file scan on Bit Defender and Kaspersky and both came up with clean results. However, I just used TotalVirus file scanner and it came up with the results below:

Do these results mean that I do in fact have a keylogger on my system tracking my strokes? I am using BlackViper tweaks minimum config so I know it may have helped. Just need insight on weather or not my passwords may be compromised.

I have attached an HT log for review. If any more information is needed I can help.

Do these results mean that I do in fact have a keylogger on my system

No, not necessarily.

Programs, often do not produce the desired results on 64 bit systems.

Lets do a couple of scans to make sure you are clean.

Please do the following:

As a Vista user I will require that all the programs I ask you to run, be run by right clicking the icon and selecting Run as Administrator. Otherwise some programs may fail to operate correctly

Download OTS**to your DesktopClose ALL OTHER PROGRAMS.
Double-click on OTS.exe to start the program.
Check the box that says Scan All Users
Check the box that says 64 bit
Under Additional Scans check the following:File - Lop Check
File - Purity Scan
Evnt - EvtViewer (last 10)

Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
Click the Format menu and make sure that Wordwrap is not checked. If it is then click on it to uncheck it.
Please attach the log in your next post.

Hi !! First time here (as many I think, so Hello again !!)
First of all, I'm French (well, excuse me for my (sadly) bad english ).
I've seen many BSOD marked as answered, so I'm trying here 'cause I've exhausted all my skills .

Bug Description:
Before wiping win 7:
BSOD and freeze time to time on WebBrowsing, log on screen, Steam Description. Always BSOD hal.dll (hal+0x12A3B)

After wiping Win 7 : - BSOD on The Witcher 3 (only game reinstalled ^^) (almost everytime same same moment, same moment). And everytime on Steam in any game description. Clicking on game, video charging 2 sec and freeze or BSOD.

Background: I have performed a new Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1 installation 3 days ago, and still nothing.
What I have tried :
- MemTest with solo memory, and with both memory
- OCCT for GPU/CPU/Power Supply
- Hd Tune for SSD/HDD
- Almost all drivers up to date (not all but GPU, SDD Firmware, BIOS, and some others)
- Up to date Win 7
- Tried uplug all component except SSD (OS), and the BSOD was still there but many minutes later as usual
- Change RAM slot and playing with 1 ram only
- no Overcloking performed
- 100% fan speed and heat never go higher than 65? Celsius for GPU and 60 for CPU on stress mode
- Safe Mode and no freeze on Steam (althrough I can test The Witcher 3 on Safe mode ^^)

hey there,
for a good while now i've been occasionally seeing a spike in my CPU usage, when i opened the performance monitor, it showed that "Xboxstat" is the process that's causes the extra load, after googling, it's a legit process but it's only used to run the Xbox controller for windows and should not under any circumstances hog 25% of my cpu load! (i have i5 3570k quad core process Running @4.4 GHz!)
lately this spike started happening again, but this time the process shows up as "Steam" in the performance monitor, and sure, i do have it installed, but it's not running at the time, and i didn't even set it to run when windows start!
the problem now is p[retty much identical to this thread:
a while back now, my PC was infected with a VBS script that turns every thing into shortcuts on any removable driver, the original script was on my C partition and it was not detected by any antivirus at all! i had to track it down and remove it manually, but i found a program called USBfix that's supposed to remove this particular script,
well, it worked, i guess..but i have already removed the original script manually like i said, and this program looks a bit dodgy too, so i thought i would state this as past history of infection, maybe it's related..
went ahead and did a FRST scan, i killed the process manually now, if you want a scan while it's still running i can a... Read more

I downloaded Windows Live Essentials for the messenger but now I would like to unistall it. I clicked on the first option but it never let me choose which programs to uninstall. It just quickly flashed a window that said "uninstalling" and then it showed me "Done! Your programs you selected have been uninstalled." I didn't get to select anything to uninstall though. In the end, Windows Live essential is still installed and I can't get rid of it.

Any suggestions guys?

Someone else will have to advise you regarding Windows Live Mesh. I know nothing about that. For Windows Live Essentials: If you cannot remove WLE using add remove programs try Revo Uninstaller. If I remember correctly it will not ask which components you want to remove. Here is how to use Revo Uninstaller: 1) First we download it from here: Revo Uninstaller Free Version. Scroll down the page for the free version download. You can skip this Step if you already have it installed. However, you may need to update it. If you have it installed already, and you need to update it, go ahead and open it up and click the AutoUpdate Icon next to Help. The use of this program makes registry changes based upon what you select for removal from the Registry. Before running Revo Uninstaller please run ERUNT before proceeding to back up your registry in case you make a mistake. 2) Select the Program to remove from the list of programs and click the Uninstall button: 3) After selecting the program you want to remove, and confirming you want to uninstall the program, then you will want to select the Advanced Option: 4) Click Next. This will start the uninstaller for the application you picked. When the uninstaller is done, and it proves to be successful, and a reboot is required, then select NO and continue the below steps. 5) Follow the prompts during the uninstallation of the application. Once it closes you will be at this window: 6) Click Next again. Once the window is do... Read more

Powered up my pc today, click on Counter Strike: Source, Windows says 'The item 'steam'.exe that this shortcut refers to has been changed or moved, so this shortcut will no longer work properly. Do you want to delete this shortcut?'. I navigate to C:\program files\steam\steamapps\relay993\counter-strike: source and try to open hl2.exe from there, nothing happens. I also have the same problem with Team Fortress Classic. If I try and open Steam itself, the updating menu pops up. Steam - Updating - 0% completely. Underneath it, 'Steam is temporarily unavailable. Please try back later.' Been like this for hour snow.

I was able to play Steam games fine yesterday and back.

I'm running Windows Vista.

Hi all!

Just starting out on this forum, so I hope you can help me out.

I have a program installed that uses a dll. Recently, I started getting the following error message:
"The application or dll xxxx is not a valid windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette." (xxxx being my dll path and name; message translated from french, but I'm sure you'll recognise it, I've seen the same kind on the forums elsewhere)

My issue is not to replace the dll, I know it's not corrupt, but it is in a weird format, which might explain the message.

However, what I'd like to know is why windows is suddenly so worried about this dll, and if there's anything I can do to simply tell windows to ignore it. At which point does windows decide to check this local dll? (the program is installed locally in it's own folders, nothing in system32 or elsewhere)

Hope you can help me out!

Thanks in advance!

A:origin of message : "xxx is not a valid windows image."

Generally this error means you got the wrong version of the dll installed. IE you are running XP and installed one for Win98 and the one for XP is slightly different.

Sometimes this is a path issue and all you need to do is to copy (not move) the DLL and put it with the others in System32

In addition there are a few specific problems which cause this type of error

Autocad also has a similar problem for which there is a patch.
So please be more specific.
Is this just one dll? If so what is it?
What application and what consequence?

You should also try reregistering the dll
using your example
go to start / run and type
regsvr32 xxxx.dll
hit enter and wait for it to say success

Just wondering if anyone else has had the following experiences recently;

First, when I opened Windows Live Mail today, one fortnightly recurring event notification from my Live Calendar started sending reminders via Live Mail to me. About ten events were immediately loaded and showed as Emails in my In Box. I deleted [unopened] all the subject Emails, followed immediately by emptying of the contents of the Deleted Folder.

However, the Emails kept coming, and the only way to stop the problem was to open the Calendar, select the subject Event and delete all future recurring instances. By that time, Emails for notifications into the middle of 2011 had been received, and I treated those the same way as detailed above.

Second, for the first Email that I wished to send after this strange behaviour, this anti-spam security clearance panel appeared;

I needed to complete the clearance, before the Live Mail email was sent.

Now I'm left wondering what this was all about?

This is a slightly annoying problem. I've disabled Windows Live Messenger from starting up, both through Messenger's options and through MSCONFIG. The program doesn't start when Windows starts. But when I log on to Windows Live Mail through a web browser, Messenger starts up on it's own. I cannot figure out a way to disable this. I've looked through Live Mail options and can't find anything to denote starting up the program. I only use my Live Mail account for junk mail, but need to check it occasionally and would prefer it if Messenger didn't start up on it's own.

When I sign into Windows Live Messenger, the error reporting pops up saying that Windows Live Communications Platform has encountered a problem and needs to close. Every time. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling. I've done virus scans. Nothing is up. Virus scans with Avira and Kaspersky. Both turning up nothing (and not done at the same time or installed at the same time of course). Any ideas? I'm hearing alot of people have this issue. Windows XP SP3.

How did you uninstall it? I did a little looking around and apparently uninstalling this program is very involved, to the extent of even removing it from the registry. You can see the instructions at this site. I saw the same instructions at two sites, so this looks like the proper procedure.

Microsoft kicked off the month of May by announcing that they are discontinuing the Windows Live brand, saying the Windows Live apps and services were built on versions of Windows that weren’t designed to connect to a cloud service and citing customer confusion. They released a chart showing the transition process for many of the current services.

This seems to be further confirmation of Microsoft’s “all in” commitment to the cloud, but had some folks worried that we’re going to lose some of our most useful applications, such as Windows Live Writer. A petition sprang up to beg Microsoft not to kill it.

A tweet from Chris Jones (Windows Live VP) on May 3 seems to lay those fears to rest, saying: “all desktop apps work great and are supported on Windows 8, including WL Writer.”

A:Windows Live is dead, long live WL apps - WinNews.com

I would have thought someone at Microsoft might have considered these points before forcing the whole world to accept Live Mail, a very poor substitute for Outlook Express - and not very well thought through in respect of useability

Hey everyone,

I really hope someone can help me with this one. I don't know what's going on. I never had any problems installing MSN Live before and now, it's a real pain.

I just got my PC back from the tech guy. He formated my computer and reinstalled Windows XP including the Updates.

Now at home, I'm trying to install Windows Live Messenger (MSN) and it's not working. It's giving me errors like, to check that I have enough hard disk space (I have 176 GB free space), If my computer has a firewall ( I don't), and that I make sure that my computer meets the system requirements ( I do meet the requirements).

Now, I don't know what to do anymore to get MSN Live.

Can please someone help me with this?

Windows Live Mail & Windows Live Hotmail Plus

I use at times both the WLM & W Live Hotmail Plus.

If I use the Hotmail I can not place a foto in the body of a message however I can send
one as a attchment.

If I use the WLM I can add a text sig, a foto sig, or both if I use the layout format and
stored pics.

What puzzles me is if wish to set-up a permanent sig I can create the text but when I
attempt to add a foto and select the source the system opens but when I select pics
the file is empty.

My sequence to try to set up a sig is as follows:

Select NEW message, then I go to the tools, options, and signature

Thanks for any info

I find the assocation of windows live mail and messenger very annoying. In WL Mail, I use both my hotmail and gmail accounts. I prefer to save my passwords so I don't have to enter them every time I open my mail. However, if I get WL Mail to rememberr my passwords, my hotmail account automatically pops up first when I want to sign into WL Messenger, even though I never use hotmail in messenger (just the gmail sign-in). So now, I always have to change the sign-in information on messenger because somehow it prefers my hotmail account.
Simply clickinig 'forget me' in WL Messenger is not the solution since this also makes WL Mail forget my hotmail password, so I have to enter this one very time I open my mail.

So somehow I would like to dissociate the two, to have WL Mail to remember my passwords, but WL Messenger to forget the hotmail account. Does anyone know if there's any way to do so? I hate these automatic associations that you don't have any control over!

Steam Hardware & Software Survey

If you click on OS, you can see that Windows 8 now accounts for 7% of all steam usage, while Windows 7 accounts for 70%, which means that Windows 8 is already (after only two months) in use by heavy gamers by a growing percentage.

Windows 7 lost 2% of share. It seem s that a lot of XP and Vista users jumped Windows 7 and went to 8.

A:Windows 8 already accounts for 10% of W7 Steam

The reason I went to Widows 8 was because the laptop I wanted and bought was cheaper pre-installed with Windows 8 than with Windows 7. Otherwise, I would have bought it with Windows 7. I suppose I can take credit for helping that Steam statistic a little. A lot of pre-installed Windows 8 systems shipped in the last couple of months since Windows 8 was officially launched only a couple of months ago and major PC/laptop manufacturers offered it pre-installed. So those figures indeed make sense.

It?s the Windows 10 Disaster on Steam as Gamers Return to Windows 7

Microsoft started the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update rollout on October 17, but this didn?t impress Steam gamers who have apparently returned to Windows 7 en-masse the last month.

Valve?s latest statistics show that Windows 10 64-bit lost no less than 17.14 percent of its share on the gaming platform, which is pretty much the biggest drop an operating system has ever experienced on Steam. At the same time, Windows 7 64-bit recorded an impressive growth of no less than 22.59 percent, re-becoming the top desktop operating system for gaming with 63.60 percent.

Windows 8.1 is third with 3.09 percent, far away from Windows 10?s 28.23 percent current Steam share, while the 32-bit version of Microsoft?s latest operating system is far behind with 0.37 percent.
For what it?s worth, macOS still doesn?t represent a threat to Windows, as Apple?s operating system is only powering 1.60 percent of the systems used for playing games on Steam. The same thing applies to Linux, as the open-source platform is running on 0.35 percent of the gaming machines.

Chinese users suddenly fell in love with gaming
So what has caused the major drop of Windows 10 on Steam? While there could be many reasons for this sudden decline, including inaccurate data from Valve, it turns out that another substantial share change was experienced in the case of languages being used to play games on Steam.

Last month, English lost ... Read more

I use Windows Live Mail and have e mail address [email protected]
Someone mentioned wlm would stop after the end of June.
I don't use wlm to connect to outlook.
So, after 30th June will I be still able to use wlm and use my [email protected] email?
Even if the answer to the above is yes do we think the writing is on the wall for wlm anyway?

A:Windows Live Mail and live.co.uk question

I have been using WLM since its introduction, and I plan to keep on using it.
I have a pop account and a Hotmail account configured in it.
If something goes awry on my Hotmail account, I can always access my Hotmail account via my web browser. Does not bother me.

Writing on the wall ?
Maybe. There are always other email clients capable to do the same job.
I'll never use the Mail app. It sucks.
Some members recommend eM Client.
Check it out, for future reference.

A:Steam stuck on "Connecting steam account..."

Hi Rami1990,

Try going to your Steam folder and deleting 'ClientRegistry.blob' and restart Steam, this has cleared up problems for me a few times.

If you're unsure of the directory:

Start > Computer > C:\ (Local Disk) > Program Files > Steam

Typically - C:\Program Files\Steam
64-bit users - C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam

It started yesterday when I attempted to launch a game (Civilization V) through Steam and got the BSOD error. I uninstalled and re-installed Steam, my graphics drivers, everything I can possibly think of, including a general fix Steam itself responded to me with (which was completely unspecific to my issue - they clearly can't be bothered), and I am to the point where I have asked for a refund for my games, because it is just that hopeless.

In a last ditch effort to get my computer straight, I downloaded BlueScreenView, and this is what it has told me; Mind you, there are multiple errors.

From this afternoon (before driver re-install and disc check):
- File names listed as issues: ntoskrnl.exe and tcpip.sys
I also had this issue last night

More recently (after all of my "fixes"):
- File names listed as issues: athrx.sys and ntoskrnl.exe (again)

Even in older crashes, ntoskrnl.exe has been listed as an issue, and I don't have enough knowledge of this sort of thing to have any idea what this means! Is there hope for me?
