Aero Randomly Turns off...

Q: Aero Randomly Turns off...

My Aero will just randomly turn off, even when I have it plugged into the wall and have it on "High performance" setting. It's really annoying because I don't particularly like the look of Vista Basic, only use it when I am doing something that I am not paying so much attention to the look or care as much (and want to save battery).

Also my COM Surrogate (i think thats wut its called) regularly has errors when I run videos/etc. This is a new thing, did not used to happen...

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

So I just upgraded from a GeForce 7300LE 128MB to an 8400GS 512MB. I have the latest drivers installed and no reverting to older drivers doesn't work. Desktop Window Manager is on some times and yet it does not keep Windows Aero on or sometimes it randomly reverts it to the basic colors. The only way I can fix it temporarily is by using the trouble shooting program for it. I'm pretty sure I have more than enough requirements for it and my system rating is 3.6 which is above 3.0 where Windows enables it. Also, appearently minimizing anything will cause my computer to freeze up for a second or two and sometimes changes it back to the Basic colors.

I have a dell xps with win7x64 upgraded in place from vistax64.

I have two geforce 9400GT cards, but only using one card with dual monitors.

Randomly, my display will flicker and the aero will turn itself off and usually back on. On rare occasion, it will turn off and stay off, and the taskbar will disappear completely, except for the start orb.

This happened constantly when I installed Fences. I found that to be the problem and removed it. Since then it still happens, but only occasionally. I can go a few days without problem, then it will happen several times repeatedly in a short time. I don't recall this happening before Fences.

Could Fences have done something or left something in place, or do I have another problem?

Hello!

I'm looking for some advice and guidance.
I am not a technical expert on computer hardware. I understand the basics and that's about the extent of it.

My current PC is a Dell desktop/tower; it runs Windows 7; it uses an Intel Core Duo processor. It is a few years old (I'd estimate 3 or 4 years old). I plug my PC into a Belkin surge protector/multi-outlet device, which plugs into the wall electrical outlet.

My problem is that recently the PC randomly has been instantly powering-down and then a few seconds later powering-up again and rebooting. This happens twice or 3 times a day, on average. I have no explanation for it. I do know that it's highly annoying and I'm concerned and want to do something to fix this problem before any permanent damage occurs to my PC.

Last week, I searched the internet briefly for advice, and the two possible causes that popped-up in search results were: A) overheating, or B) issues with the power cord. Given that, over the past week, in my spare time, I have totally rerouted all the cords and wires behind my computer desk, to ensure that no wires were tangling, pulling, or weighing-down on the power cord for my PC. I also totally dusted out the cabinet and backside of the PC tower, and gently vacuumed the "fan" area on the back of the PC, to ensure it was free of dust and lint. I removed some random objects from the PC cabinet (CD's, mice, keyboard, etc.) to ensure that there was plenty of "ai... Read more

Hi everybody
When i run an aero theme, all my text dissapears, it turns transparent, in 'my computer' and all local files. I can see through the letters and see be background.
How do i get back my text so i can actually read it again?
To clarify:
I were setting up my desktop to my liking. i went and found my old .dream to get as the wallpaper, all was fine until i wanted to get rid of icon text. I went and disabled dropshadow, and then this happened; all text in documents goes transparent. I am clueless as to what might be the problem. I have tried to upgrade my graphics driver, i tried 'find and fix...' .. nothing..

I hope this forum might have a solution as to what can restore my text.

Cheers

A:All text turns transparent when using an aero theme

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

I think your best bet is a system restore to a point before you installed your wallpaper, and then just stick to an aero theme. If you don't like the ones that came with Windows 7, there are plenty more to be had from Microsoft online.

At the moment I'm using Windows XP Professional x64 but I've been kinda wanting to switch back to Vista. One of the problems I had with Vista is that when I ran a few games (Mostly Call of Duty 4 and World at War) in windowed mode in the multiplayer part, Aero would turn off until I closed the game. Is there a way to fix this?

Here are my current System Specs:

AMD Phenom II X6 1045
OCZ MODX STREAM-PRO PSU (700W)
8gb Corsair Vengance at 9-9-24 and 1600Mhz
Western Digital 1tb Green

I was told this was most likely a problem with HDD or RAM.
So i have tried replacing my HDD with an old spare, but the pc would still turned off. So i am running HD Tune on my primary HDD to test for errors.
The health tab returns no errors though so i am assuming that this is all good.

I ran memtest 86+ overnight , but with both sticks installed, and it returned no errors (should i retry with one stick at a time?) .

The apparent next cause of such an issue would be the PSU, but after runnnig occt for 30-60 mins it gave voltages on all 3 rails well within 5%, the largest deviation was about 0.5% . Should i also check the bios volatges ?

My cpu reaches about 70 C at full load under OCCT's burn in tests, so i dont think that would be a problem.

It seems to occur more in some games than others, although it also has occurred while at idle.

Also sometimes the peripherals and screen freeze for up to 3 seconds and then become responsive again, they also make the usb insertion sound when they reconnect , so i am assuming that they are losing signal from the mobo.

This leads me to believe that the mobo is the problem, although i dont have a spare one to test with at the moment.

One last note, it can freeze/turn off up to 5 times a day, but then work fine for then next 3-4 days... It seems completely random

Hello,

Please post the temp and voltage readings from the BIOS.

Once you have this info install HWMonitor and post a screenshot of the program at idle and under load (while gaming)

Hi guys,

One of our staff members has been getting the Aero screen popping up at what seems to be random times.
The machine is a Sony VAIO all in one touch screen and the only way to clear the Aero cascade is to touch the screen, tapping the keyboard or moving the mouse does nothing to clear it.
There is no screen savers on nor any themes.
Has anyone come across this before?

hi there

i have some issues here
i had alot of black outs that killed my old PSU and GPU (which was Geforce 295 gtx from Gigabyte)

i replace them with Geforce 295 GTX from XFX and AcBel R88 1100W

after that i notice that the win7's AERO turn off often (which never happened to me before with this build since i had it.. and i had it for 2 years allready...)

i thought to myself that it probably issue with my OS and because i planed to format anyway i thought that i have nothing to worry.
then i reinstall Mass Effect 2 to finish its DLCs before 3 will come out and saw that the game crash for me with TDRs and black screens, i played ME2 two years ago with that pc and had no issues at all....
i tried to change my driver (which was the 295.51 beta) to other old drivers, i tested the 260.99 which usually was stable for my older 295 gtx card and the issue still was there.... i tried 3 more drivers and still no luck...

then i formatted and notice that the pc working a bit slower at some parts, and after each 20 mins my Aero was turning off again before i install any drivers, it never happened to me in this pc with my old GPU and PSU and i formatted it really alot. after that i installed the 260.99 driver again for a test and let win7 to test my system points and in the middle of the test my driver crash and when i tried it again i got black screens and had to forcely turn off my pc! after that i fully delete the 260.99 and installed the 295.51 beta again..., the sudden a... Thanks for the replay . However I 100% sure that it hardware issue and not driver issue, I never OC my system and I not plan to do it too. By BSOD I meant to black screens and not blue... does it count? , it happened mostly because of the video driver , I think that it hint that the driver is not getting along with this video card..

Btw my pc is reformatted again atm and I don't have either the log anymore and still not install any program on it so i don't think that I can send the file atm..

Im not sure if its a major cause for concern... But I have noticed that Aero will disable itself very randomly.... like weeks apart randomly. After about 10 minutes or so Aero will re-enable itself. The only connection I have came up with is that firefox "with a youtube playing" is running when it happens.

The first time it happened, it was quite alarming... enough so to make me do several full malware scans on all 3 of my hard drives. However none of the virus scanners detected a infection... and they still have not to this day... so I have came to the conclusion that it must be a program that just runs randomly that has the "no aero" launch command.

My only problem is that I have not found any "new" programs running during the period that aero is disabled. Just wondering if someone else has figured out what exactly is causing this.

Windows 7 will revert to the standard theme anytime you run an application that is not compatible with the Display Window Manager (DWM) which provides the Aero features, your video card or video RAM runs out of memory to fully load all the Aero features or your system performance drops below an acceptable level to provide all Aero features. When this happens, a balloon popup should appear near your taskbar clock. Click it to see the true source of the problem. How much Ram do you have?

So about a week ago, I was just playing a flash game when my screen appeared to freeze, upon unfreezing Windows Aero stopped working(the transparency on the task bar disappeared). There was no error, it just stopped working. After looking around my computer it told me that Aero wasn't supported, which did not make sense considering it was just supported.

So I did a system restore(it was made after a windows update) and it started working again. It worked fine for a few days and just today it did the exact same thing. Of course, I resolved this issue with a system restore as previously, but I would like to find out what the problem is exactly to fix it, since my current solution is just going to be an annoyance.

Any help would be appreciated. I did search prior to making this and could not find a topic similar to this or any with a solution. Thanks a lot a head of time!

I hope I'm just being paranoid and everything is fine but...

A few days ago, I had an incident of "Display driver has stopped responding and successfully recovered" for the first time in more than a year, and I freaked out thinking my graphics card was starting to fail.

I discovered then there was a very big update for the graphics card released a week before that, and so installed that and restarted. Not sure if that was in any way related.

Now tonight, in the middle of playing a video game, while playing music in Windows Media Player, and watching a video clip on Media Player Classic (I do this frequently enough without issue), my screen began to sloppily black out---one black window for the game in windowed mode, then the rest of it---and the screen returned, but my Windows Aero had shut off, reverting my computer scheme back to basic.

I had experienced similar things with my old graphics card, and it typically led to the computer freezing up, so I rapidly closed all my open programs, and ran up SpeedFan to check the temperature.

Despite closing everything, the temperature remained steadily high, and suddenly a weird, faint noise began to emanate from my computer. I think it sounded something like a squeaking or whining sound.

Gradually, the temperature started to go back down, though it took longer than normal, and the Aero returned after I logged off and logged back in.

I also checked my computer properties, and saw that my Windows Exp... Read more

A:Windows Aero randomly shuts off, and GPU temperatures elevate

From what you've said it seems like you're having a fan problem on your GPU. Try a stress test like MSI Afterburner, and monitor the fan speed and temps while you do it. Your fan should spin quite fast when the card is under heavy load. Don't let your temps get too high. We just want to see if the fan is spinning correctly.

My PC randomly shuts down. This all started roughly two weeks ago, but it keeps getting worse and more frequent. When it shuts down I have to flip the switch in the back, wait a few seconds, then flip it again before restarting. The power button on the front does nothing.
(The PC is completely off when it shuts down. It's not running at all)
I pinpointed the problem down to 3 possibilities out of everything I found on google that could be causing this.

1. Drivers are not up to date (this is a very high possibility BUT I think something is wrong because the updates are endless. Every time I log on to my PC, I get a notification from AMD that there is a new update available. I spent about an hour the other day just updating and restarting my PC over and over. Whats up with that?)

2. Overheating seems to be a common issue especially since it is Summer. BUT I have turned my fans up manually to 100%, simply started Overwatch, and just sat there at the Main Menu. My PC turned off within 30 seconds. I would say that is the issue but I have had my PC turn off during a Youtube video or just browsing the internet..... Plus my PC can handle BF4 and Overwatch with ease so why would it be an issue now?

3. I might have a virus. Windows Defender has been known to not be the best ( I have experienced this first hand) so this could be a possibility but I dont know for sure obviously.

I joined this website for this issue because I really dont know exactly what I am doing.

I'm having a problem with my new build, it keeps turning itself off at random times without warning. There's no specific pattern that I have noticed. Sometimes it won't even stay on long enough for me to reach the bios, and other times it will go all the way into my windows vista and stay on for a while. The first time I boot it up it was on for a good 4 hours, then it shut off. Turned it back on and it stayed on for like 2 hours. Now I'm at a point where its turning off at random times. WE are using very similar parts in our rigs but your pc cutting out could be a list of things. Anything from bios setup, drivers for numerous things and even bad wiring or memory setup. Without knowing what you have done to this machine it's very hard to tell and this kind of problem is a process of elimination. Tell us what you have installed and anything you altered in bios. If you overclocking it, then it's no wonder but odds are it's your bios or memory, possibly a driver. Set the bios to defeault or reset the Cmos on the board to reset it, install this Nvidia driver here
http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

Restart following Nvidia instructions and see how it runs. Beyond that you may want to adjust your memory and try setting it a lower frequency. Many think higher speed ram is best but it's actually not, will read higher on Vista only because of latency. I run 667mhz ram unlinked and set to 533mhz in bios and then matches the cpu internal freq of 266mhz (q6600). You have double that. If you overclocking the ram is what will get you 1st, and god only knows what your timings are. Try the bios reset and make sure oyu have the correct Nvidia driver and then see how it's going.

EDIT: I just realized something very important and more regarding your memory you are using.. you can't install 1066mhz ram on a 750i! You can get it up to 1066 overclocked but you can only use 800mhz ram!! Scratch the rest of my advice, you need 667... Read more

I've been having a problem with my PC for months now where it seems to randomly turn off when under load (I've not seen it power off whilst doing regular tasks like word or chrome use).

I figured it was the power supply (that I have now replaced and the problem continues) causing the issues as the PC seems to just shut off instantly without warning. There are no blue screens or error messages when I turn the PC back on.

After looking at the event viewer this is what it tells me (see jpeg)

Hey, folks!

My new computer (one month old) recently started turning itself off seemingly at random (while playing a game, surfing the web, etc.). At first I thought it might be a faulty PSU, video card or mobo, so I took my rig into the guys who built it for me and they replaced the video card. This didn't solve the problem. I took it back and this time, since they too were baffled, they kindly gutted my machine and replaced every part (or so they say) including the video card, mobo and PSU. In fact, they upgraded the mobo to a higher-end model as their way of saying sorry! Everything seems to be running a lot smoother and the shutdowns are happening a whole lot less often - only once since I brought it home from the most recent repair attempt. In my book, though, once is still one time too many.

I've done my fair share of research on the issue and advice on the matter seems to range from a bad video card, mobo or PSU to Windows XP being finnicky to a loose stick of RAM. Needless to say, I am stumped and so are the guys who built this machine for me. So, with that said, I turn it over to you - the real experts!

What's the first step in figuring out what's wrong? It has two brand new 250mm fans. When it started doing this last weekend I thought it was overheating, so I got it new fans but the problem has persisted. What else can I check and how?
It's a custom built PC, originally built in 2009.
It's running windows 8.1 64 bit
AMD Phenom 9950 Quad-Core processor 2.60 GHz
8GB memory
AMD Radeon R7 370 Series graphics card
Seagate  1TB SATA HDD
MSI DKA790GX Motherboard
PSU 860 WATT ATX12V
EDIT: Looking in the Custom log reveals Kernel 41 errors. Tried to run use windows diagnostic to check the memory and it only got to 80% complete (no errors detected yet) before shutting down with another 41 error. This leads me to believe it's not memory since it had the error during the test, and my assumption would be the memory wouldn't be in use that way if it were attempting to check it, is this correct? How can I find out which part it is? If it's the PSU or Motherboard etc. IF it's a faulty PSU what do I need to check when buying a new one to make sure it's compatible to my motherboard?

Hi, ive been having this problem for a while but it is not constant. My computer will simply turn off randomly. Sometimes i can go for hours and hours of gaming and it will be fine so ive ruled out over heating as an issue. It was suggested that maybe a slot of RAM had become faulty causing my computer to turn off.

Today i decided to test my RAM by running high demanding programs hopefully causing my computer to switch off. Then i would take out a single slot of RAM to see if that was the problem. The thing is ive been running programs all day and my system hasn't shut off once. I know should be patient but to be honest this is taking the piss.

If anyone has had this sort of problem and could share some information on what may be causing the problem then please help.

First you need to try the monitor on another computer. If it works on another computer then your problem is most likely the video card.

I recently installed my hardware components in a new case along with a new hard drive and a new power supply unit. Since the installation everything seemed to be running smoothly, except for the fact that my computer shuts down randomly. When I play Far Cry 2 my computer shuts down consistently after about 20 minutes, and with casual PC use my computer shuts down after about 90 minutes. My guesses for this problem is that there is something wrong with my power supply, despite the fact that it got very good reviews, my motherboard is shot, or some component that is connected to my mobo is overheating. If anyone knows how I can solve this problem, that would be greatly appreciated!

Yes JoeM076,
I would say that the Corsair is a great power supply! You have an Asus motherboard. Could it have been damaged by static while moving it into another case. Is everything snug and connected securely? What about properly cleaning the old thermal paste off and reseating the CPUs heatsink and fan. How are the case fans? Are they running freely?

My Hp Pavilion Notebook has started randomly turning off today. It happened 2 times today and once yesterday. It basically just shuts off as it would if i held the power button down, and then restarts on it's own. It brings up a black screen saying that the system wasn't responding and shows options to start in safe mode or whatever (i'm sure you know the one i mean). My laptop is just over a month old so i don't understand why this is happening. I don't think it's an overheating problem because i have a cooling pad which i always use. My laptops been running around 40C all day, which isn't any different from any other day. Any insights on what the problem could be?

I recently tried to install some new RAM into my computer and noticed a problem; basically it wouldn't work at all. So after doing a bit of research I found out that it wasn't the right type for my computer. So I removed it. ]

Everything seemed fine until about 2 days later when my computer turned off randomly, without me shutting it down. I thought it could be the computer overheating so I lifted of the shell and cooled it for a bit. Not the problem, even without the shell on it still turns off. I have changed my PSU cable and still not working.

I have a Fujitsu Scaleo P. Any suggestions?

Hello,
I have an HP Pavilion 15 that is about 3 years old. It has a 2.40 gigahertz Intel Core i5-4210U processor.

Twice today, my laptop has, without warning, shut off completely. The only way to bring it back up is to plug it in, despite the battery being at around 30% or 50%. I had updated my computer in between the two shutdowns. I am not sure if it has anything to do with Windows 8.1 or not. If I could get help on this, that would be great. Have a good day!

A:Computer Turns off Randomly

It might not be any software issue. Laptop and its parts stop working optimally after a random time (generally 3 years or till end of your warranty). Also there can be any loose ends/ loose contacts. That's a general case though.

You can also try cleaning with CCleaner for any errors (just in case).

Check the battery health once. Go through the link if you don't know how.

Yeah, can I turn on JAvascript by any chance?

A:Javascript turns off randomly (I think)

JavaScript has to be enabled in any browser. To see if it working in your browser(s) go to this test page with every browser you have (one at a time of course!);http://www.javatester.org/

Click on the 'JavaScript' box on the left hand side and, if JS is working, a box will open confirming that and identifying the browser and the version of JS it is using. The version of JS varies with each browser, IE uses 1.3, Firefox 1.7 and Opera (my default browser) 2.1.

If you need confrimation that Sun Java is installed and working, you need to click on the box at the top of the tester page and then on the 'Java Enabled' box on the left.

Ok, this is the weirdest problem i have ever seen. i'm a computer technician myself and have no idea how to proceed here...

my mom's computer has been randomly shutting itself off for about a week now. i checked the power settings and it wasn't set to shut off at a certain time. so i suspected an overheating cpu or too much drain on the psu. then later that day it shut off and wouldn't boot up anyore. it would get about halfway through post, no beep codes, and then return to the page that asks if you want to boot into safe mode or normal mode. it was like on a loop. after opening up the case i found out that there was plenty of power but that the cpu fan [the one on the heatsink] was SO clogged with dust it would barley move. after i cleaned that out i disconnected one hard drive[the secondary drive] and cleaned it off because it was also caked with dust. i connected it back exactly the way it was and didn't change any jumpers or cable placing. i reconnected the power and tried to boot it. it booted just fine.
into windows 98!
i don't have 98 on this computer. it's a windows xp with sp2.

what on earth? please help.

A:Windows xp randomly turns into 98?!?

ok addendum...

i fixed the booting into 98 problem. but xp is still not booting. there is a blue screen error but it dissapears to quick for me to read any of it. it is constantly looping back from the window logo screen to the pick a mode to boot in screen. i hit tab to watch the post and it gets about halfway through before restarting. still no beep codes.

I tried re-installing the drivers from dell's website but they don't fix anything. Should I just go back to XP or vista?

Hi guys

I was wondeing if anyone could give me a explanation for why my computer randomly turns off after 30-2h of it being on? The computer will boot up fine, load all programs like normal - i can start a game or word doc and work with those for a bit but then the computer randomly turns itself off! It wont turn back on straight away unless i turn it off/on at the back and unplug-plug it back in.

Now, I've concluded from tests that it is not the PSU (PSU tester) or a temperature problem (I've monitored my CPU - doesnt go over 50C = but not tested the MOBO temp - case temp is about 40-45C).

My specs are: ASUS P4-800SE, P4 2.8GHz, 1 GB DDR RAM, 320GB HDD, 500W Coolermaster PSU, 512MB Radeon 1650PRO AGP, Soundblaster 5.1.

I was wondering it could be bad RAM or MOBO - how could I test each component exclusively? Does it matter that the RAM (2*512MB) are in slots 1 and 3 (of 4))?

BTW I installed GOW around the time this problem started but did a system restore...

Any help would be much appreciated and merry xmas to all

A:Computer Randomly Turns Off

Asus boards are usually pretty reliable but a visual inspection to check for damaged capacitors might reveal something - I have had the same symptoms before and it was either the main board or the capacitors in the PSU (Tested OK as well!) that caused the problem. Try another PSU if no fat caps on the motherboard - do NOT under any circumstances muck about with the caps in the PSU - there's almost enough volts in them to kill! No kidding....

I don't know what the problem is with my computer, I attempted to fix it by just reformatting, however it did not fix a thing.

I would be things on my computer like surf the web or click around folders on desktop/mycomputer, my screen will randomly turn black for 1-2 seconds, then back on, sometimes it simultaneously does it and it gets extremely irritating.

After I reformatted, everything was fine, and nothing turned off. However I came back home from school today and it just continuously goes black for a few seconds then back on. I also attempted using Symantec AV to see if it was a virus, I have no infections.

Also, when I play games such as CS, it won't turn black at all, I don't know if this is some issue with hardware or whatever, can someone please help me resolve this?

Thanks in advance.

Oh and I forgot, sometimes when I try to do something, my computer will freeze for a second, and restart its self...

Hello. I'm a new PC builder and only know the very basics. I just built a new computer and at ran into a few problems. My specs are:
Case: Antec P180 (3 fans)

CPU: Intel e4300 (1.8ghz)
RAM: 2GB Kingston DDR2 667

I connected everything (don't know much about PSU, just connected them all, I'm a bit ignorant about the whole voltage thing) and at first it works fine. I let it load and do the disk format thing when installing XP and leave it on while I fell asleep. Few hours later the computer is off. I turn it on and it turns off a few seconds later with nothing on the screen. Tried turning it on around five times and the same thing happens. I leave it alone and look on the internet for some solutions and then tried again. The computer works fine for around 20 minutes and then shuts down again. I try again and then it shuts down few seconds later. I turn it on in the next hour and it lasts for 1-2 hours before shutting down again. I look online with people with similar problems and ones saying its the CPU, the other says its the PSU, motherboard or RAM. I don't know who to listen to. I downloaded Speedfan and Core Temp and ones telling me around 75C. I freak out, go to the BIOS and set the CPU clock speed down. Hi,

I am using an HP e-pc machine (which uses a small form factor motherboard) and recently it simply switches off with no warning what so ever. Seems to happen more often when running intense applications.

I'm unable to reboot it using the power switch, I have to manually unplug the cable, and plug it back in at the back to get it to turn on. It'll switch off in dos (in the bios menu) and in windows, no bsod or anything similar.

I thought it was a heat issue, however after ensuring the heatsink+fan were properly set, then leaving the case open and hainvg a second fan blow at it, it still turns itself off.

This is a pentium III machine, and unfortunately there are no temperature gauges in the bios, and I don't everest doesn't recognise any either. The power supply is an external one, similar to a laptop power supply design, using a 19v/3.16A.

I am not normally able to keep it running for over an hour.

Thanks in advance,

Louis.

Since you've determined its not a heating issue, it could be a power supply issue. Do you have another power supply you could test?

I know there is a topic that addresses this already, but I have some computer-specific questions related to the procedure/advice that is given in the other thread. I have a IBM ThinkCentre 3.0Ghz machine that is randomly shutting itself off. It appears to be an overheating issue. The other post recommends checking the fans. I see two fans in there (they both work), but does anyone know how many fans there are in this machine (it's a tower). Is there a hidden fan that isn't working or is it just the two I can see? Second, if the heatsink has a thermal pad, do I still need to apply a new layer of thermal paste? Third, what temperature should a computer run at? The other post included a link to a diagnostic tool, but I don't have any benchmark for comparing my computer. Also, if the computer shuts down when it gets hot, how can I use the tool?

Thanks for your help!

A:My computer turns itself off randomly

computer shuts off randomly

Do you mean that if I just leave the computer sitting there after it has shut down, it will turn back on after 5-10 minutes? When the computer does its "I'm turning myself off in the middle of a process" routine, the mouse, keyboard, harddrive, all that junk turn off, but the power light remains on. Will it restart after it cools down? Also, when I try to restart the computer, it will get to the desktop, then shut down. It does get by the BIOS and loadup screens, though. Is this normal for an overheating issue? Finally, what kind of issues could it be with RAM? Are there any tests/diagnostic tools to check?

Thanks
