X1 Carbon Trackpoint/Trackpad left click problem

Q: X1 Carbon Trackpoint/Trackpad left click problem

I have a user that has a 2nd Generation X1 Carbon (the type with virtual buttons on the Synaptics TrackPoint/TrackPad. The user is complaining that a context sensitivie menu (of the type that a right click would initiate) intermittently is shown when she left clicks. She normaly uses the TrackPad but does use the TrackPoint on ocassion. Here's what I've done so far: 1) I initially thought it was the TrackPad and had Lenovo Support replace it. The problem was reduced but is still occurs. 2) I've installed current UltraNav drivers and updated all other drivers to current levels. The WIndows 10 is also updated to current patches. I would try setting the UltraNave to "Click Anywhere" but that disables the TrackPoint feature that is ocassionally used. Has anyone seen this happen before and know a fix for this?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I have an X1 Carbon Gen 3On all my previous Thinkpads wasy back since the T20 I've disabled the trackpad and buttons in the BIOS, but with this one disabling the Trackpad seems to leave the buttons active. I've always hated trackpads, and use the trackpoint or a mouse. I keep hitting the buttons when typing, which causes problems. Don't want tto diasble the trackpoint, just the pad and buttons. Possible? Also, a Windows Control Panel solution won't work as I run Linux.

When moving the mouser cursor with the trackpad, pressing or releasing any of the three TrackPoint buttons will randomly makes the trackpad unresponsive 50% of the time. The cursor will eventually resume movement if you keep moving your finger. This makes clicking and dragging fail most of the time. This does NOT apply to:1. Moving the cursor with the trackpad and pressing the lower-left or lower-right trackpad buttons instead of the trackpoint buttons.2. Moving the cursor with the trackpoint nub and pressing the trackpad or trackpoint buttons. To reieterate the problem is exclusively when using the trackpoint buttons WHILE dragging on the trackpad. I'm using Windows 10 Pro with the latest Synaptics firmware installed (n2hgc06w.exe installed firmware pr3013337-tm-p3467-010.img) and the latest Elan driver installed (n2hg404w.exe). This is on a brand new X1 Carbon Gen 7 I received yesterday (model 20R1S04100) with all BIOS updates applied. This *exact* same behavior happens with Ubuntu 19.10 so clearly it is not a Windows 10 or Windows driver issue, but a firmware one.Are there any solutions? It really does make the trackpad unusable...

I find my mouse click often not registering and I need to click multiple times for the action to execute. This isn't a matter of lag because I tried waiting a while and the action never executes unless if I click it multiple times. This is really frustrating. My old T420s never had this issue.  It might be worth mentioning that I also have a problem with the trackpoint scrolling which if I scroll in the vertical direction, it first registers as a horizontal scroll icon and doesn't change to vertical unless if I press down hard and the page ends up jumping from the pressure. I can't gradually scroll. Several other people mentioned this issue in a separate thread but no fix was ever proposed.  I'm wondering if the two are related in that they could be some I/O communication issue between the trackpoint and some controller.

I just received my X1 Carbon and am noticing something unusual about the left thumb mouse button (is that what it's called?)  Anyways I find myself often hitting the far-right edge of the left-button (practically touching the middle thumb button) and I'm finding that it does not register.  Similarly if I hit the far-left edge of that button, it doesn't register either... my thumb needs to depress the center of that button in order for it to work.  This issue doesn't happen with the right-button... I can hit the far-left and far-right edge of that and it will work fine. There is something weird about the left thumb button though... it is definitely higher in height than the right thumb button.  Seems like a fit & finish issue. Does anyone else have this problem?

A:X1 carbon - left thumb click button

I found the following information for the X1 Carbon User Guide, I hope it is helpful! I believe the Left Click button is what you are referring to when you said the Left thumb mouse button, close enough; I knew what you were referring to and that's all that really matters

Page 23 and 24:

Using the TrackPoint pointing device
The TrackPoint pointing device consists of a pointing stick 1 on the keyboard and three click buttons at the bottom of the keyboard. To move the pointer 5 on the screen, you apply pressure to the nonslip cap on the pointing stick in any direction parallel to the keyboard; the pointing stick itself does not move. The speed at which the pointer moves depends on the pressure you apply to the pointing stick. The functions of the left 4 and right 2 click buttons correspond to those of the left and right mouse buttons on a conventional mouse. The TrackPoint center button 3 called the scroll bar, enables you to scroll Web pages or documents in any direction with no need to use the graphic scroll bars on the side of the window.

Try custominzing the settings to see if makes a difference for the for clicking the Left click button.
You can customize the TrackPoint pointing device and its buttons as follows:
? Switch the functions of the left and right buttons.
? Change the sensitivity of the TrackPoint pointing device.
? Enable the Press-to-Select function.
? Enable the TrackPoint Scrolling Tips.

Hi, After installing Windows 10, I began to have issues with the left click button on the touchpad.  The left click suddenly stops functioning, and it does not work again until I reboot the computer.  It is not a hardware issue as I have tested this by changing the functionality between the left and right buttons, at which point the left button works again.  My sense is there is a bug in the touchpad's driver software under the new operating system.  I have tried to uninstall and reinstall drivers, I have scanned to ensure the computer does not have a virus, and I have reinstalled the operating system.  None of this solves the issue.  The left mouse click on the touchpad will still suddenly stop working at some period of time after using the computer (generally after leaving the computer idle and later resuming use).   Any ideas, thoughts, suggestions are welcome.  Is it a bug in the driver software for the touchpad that needs to be fixed for Windows 10?   Thanks you!

I have used X1 carbon 3rd gen (corporate laptop) for 3 years, and never found trackpad give so much trouble. I have read several pages where similar issues have been reported by users, but I am unable to find a solution. Is this a known problem? I am wondering if I should surrender this laptop.

My brand-new P50 laptop was behaving as though the left trackpad button was sticking. When single-tapping the left trackpad button, it would behave as though the "click n' drag" setting was enabled: the trackpad would override the keyboard, preventing me from typing until either the trackpad was moved again or the button was clicked again.  I work for Microsoft and have always used Lenovo products without ever having encountered an issue before, so I was more than a little surprised. I called Lenovo support, and they were less than helpful. In the end, they suggested that the trackpad itself was defective. The laptop was orvernighted to the repair depot in the southeast. Naturally, there was a three-week wait for parts - despite this being a model currently in production. Finally, after causing a stink (this is, after all, my primary work machine), a helpful support tech located parts at another facility. Another week later, and my laptop was back - with the SAME problem continuing to surface. This time I dug deeper, looking into the various trackpad settings, tweaking the various "accidental interrupt" delay settings, verifying that the "click to drag" feature was disabled, and running various diagnostics on the trackpad itself. The one interesting thing I noted was that the button-stickiness only seemed to happen in applications (IE, Word, etc.) - the button "stickiness" didn't happen when scrolling through Windows... I have the 2016 XPS 13 (9350).
Occasionally single tapping on the trackpad no longer works. Instead it assumes a click and hold action - when you move the mouse it'll highlight things you go past or when you tap on a file it will drag on it. The only way to work around this is to physically click the trackpad everytime. Restarting fixes the problem but it still reoccurs every once and a while.
Also when I go to settings --> about --> it says XPS  8700. The laptop has intel i5-6200U CPU @ 2.3 GHz 2.4 GHz so it's the 9350 right?
I've also been getting around 6.5-7.5 on moderate usage - YouTube, facebook most often. Is this normal?
Any solutions?

So ive had my t480 for 2 months now. About 1 month ago the trackpad and trackpoint started observing unusual behavior. When i boot the machine up, the trackpoint doesnt work, but the trackpad works except its very laggy. Eventualy when i start using the machine, the trackpad starts to work regularly. Ive checked the bios settings, xorg config files (i use unix based operating systems usually) and ive tried using windows. None of these worked. So it seems like a hardware issue. What do i do?

A:T480 intermitant trackpoint and trackpad.

Hello and welcome,

This is totally out of left field... but I've seen similar behavior when testing live Ubuntu on an X280.

It's fixed (perhaps w/out advanced touchpad features) by adding "psmouse.proto=bare"  (w/out the quotes) to the kernel line in the grub boot stanza.

Can't explain why it would suddenly change on your machine, so as I said... out of left field...

I bought a Yoga 460 from the Lenovo Outlet (refurbished) and it is completely wrong on specs (wrong graphics, wrong HD, wrong display, etc.). However, moving beyond that for a moment, I am having two issues related to trackpads/trackpoints. I am on Windows 10 and haven't even installed anything. (1) The cursor is arbitrarily moving around the screen. When I turn off the Trackpoint, the cursor no longer moves erratically. (2) Once I turn off Trackpoint, the Trackpad is still super laggy. Moving the cursor across the screen is choppy and slow. The touchscreen, meanwhile, is lightning quick and fine. I updated my drivers and hardware checks out in Lenovo Solutions Center. I am terribly disappointed in the product I have received so far and hope that once I return the product and receive the product I actually ordered.

I've been using this L412, #4403,  for a few years, and quite satisfied with it.Sorry for the long post, I believe the chain of events are relevant to the issue. A few days ago the fan died. I cleaned the laptop less than half a year ago so probably not dust issue. I dual-boot Windows 7 and Linux Mint Qiana and it wouldn't work on either of them, so probably not OS issue. BIOS doesn't have any fan info.Replaced it with a new fan, correct model, everything according to the manual and proper CPU fan replacement practices. After assembly everything was working as usual. Next day everything was working as usual. On its second day the fan didn't turn on when I turned the laptop on. At the same time, trackpad and trackpoint stopped working, volume control doesn't work, and the special Fn keys don't work. The F1-F12 keys work. Insert, Delete, Home, End keys work. The Fn+Insert does a Screenshot as it should, but none of the other Fn special keys work. All that happened at once, from the moment I booted up the laptop. I checked the two OSs again. None of the above work on either of them. Doesn't work during boot-up sequence.Found a way on Linux Mint to turn on the fan to full-power, but it's like that only after the OS reaches the desktop. Auto mode makes it turn 0 RPM, full-power makes it turn at about 435 RPM (very stable). I assume it's not an OS issue because it stopped on both of them at the same time, and it doesn't work during boot-up sequence even though... Hi All, Anyone know if there is a fuse that protects both the trackpoint and the trackpad on the T440 ?.  Bought second hand  and neither trackpoint or pad work.  Trackpad shows little wear so I suspect this has been a long term issue.  Booting into Linux there is nothing showing up in the mouse/touchpad settings except when I connect an external mouse, so neither device is being seen which makes me think it might be a fuse ?.  Both are enabled in BIOS and have tried disabling each separately. Also tried a diffferent keyboard, and also disconnected both the touchpad and trackpoint separately.  No life from either. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

I have a recently purchased X1 Extreme, with fully updated system (according to Lenovo System Update) and running Windows 10 v. 1903.  Following some lost functionality / freeze-up of the mouse pointer, I first tried deleting the Synaptics Trackpoint in Device Manager, then rebooting. This "fix" worked, but the problem repeated itself.  So I followed the usual path - look for newer drivers in Lenovo Support.  So I looked at the X1E Drivers & Software page and downloaded the TrackPoint Firmware Update Utility from:https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles/n20g902w.exe Running this program gave me the following error (screenshot should (?) be attached):"Fail to enter Transparent mode" And now the TrackPoint & TrackPad do not work at all.  I am using an external USB mouse ... with my ultraportable laptop.   I searched and searched online, of course, and found a solution seems to have been found for the same problem on the X1 Carbon 6th Generation.  The solution involves downloading the SYNAPTICS Touchpad Firmware from the Lenovo site at:https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/LAPTOPS-AND-NETBOOKS/THINKPAD-X-SERIES-LAPTOPS/THINKPAD-... But ... no such update for the X1 Extreme.   HELP...!!! Hi. After using ThinkPads for a couple of years now I purchased the Carbon 7th gen, and my experience with combining the trackpad for movement of the curser and the physical buttons for the trackpoint has allways been my perfered way to operate. When using the combination on my new Carbon 7th gen I am having some very frustrating sticking of the curser. After some reading around the web I have been thinking that it may be the palm-check functionality that inhibits the trackpad for halv a second. And it is really irritating. I can not seem to find the palm-check function, and I have not been able to fully remove all drivers for the trackpad to reinstall from scratch. The error does not appear in the BIOS where the mouse works fine, so it is not a hardware issue. What can I do?

I am thinking that this is all a driver issue because I tried out Ubuntu and there it works without problems also uninstalling the driver gets the Touchpad to work but the gestures don't work then. But if this is a driver issue shouldn't everyone have this problem?

Hello everybody!I've just returned from a trip and I am finding some annoying problems on my Thinkpad E490, which is just a few months old.The trackpad appears to be stuck in some way: when I move the cursor (touching the trackpad with one finger, and just touching, not clicking) the machine reads something like a 'double tap to select' command, so the cursor moves but selects everything on its way. E.g.: if I open Paint, instead of just moving the brush, it actually draws, as if it the left botton was held clicked. Moreover, the trackpoint doesn't work, and the setting page to turn it on is grayed out.I have just updated all the drivers from the Lenovo website and through the preinstalled Lenovo software, but nothing has changed. If I use an external mouse there's no problem, but I would like the computer to work properly and not to bring around another piece...Can someone help me figure this out?

Brand new 5th gen X1 Carbon here.  The left button seems like it misses a click every 10th or 20th time, particularly if I click on the right side, where your thumb rests naturally. I found a couple of threads indicating that this was a known problem with previous generations.  ("Known" in the sense that a Lenovo tech confirmed it was a design flaw - too wide of a button with only one microswitch underneath.) Was this issue fixed, and maybe I just have a bad unit?  Or is it an ongoing problem?  The reason I ask is that I'm still within the holiday return period, and I don't want to try to have the machine repaired, only to fall outside the return period and discover that I have to live with the problem forever.

ok, my acer 5335 is brand new and has vista basic. when i first connected to the internet i installed all available updates including explorer 8 and vista service pack 2. i also downloaded avg anti virus and sunbelt firewall.
the problem i have is that some links in some sites will not open at all, some need a right click to select 'open' from the menu, and others open as they should with just a single left click.
examples,
on my hotmail page, mails will open with a single left click, but the reply or new mail controls will not respond to right or left.
on autotrader.co.uk i can left click to view details of cars from the listings, but if i want to view the extra pictures i need to right click and select open.
google search works fine and most forum sites as i've been looking for a fix have been ok too.
the having to right click isn't too much of a problem but not being able to reply to mail is going to be a pain.
thanks for reading a long post, hopefully someone a bit more clued up that me can point me in the right direction.
cheers, pete.

It might be as simple as a mouse driver. can you go start>search>type event viewer, and go to the mouse tab. id it listed there, and is it working properly? If it has a yellow triangle on it or ins't listed there you need to re-install the driver.

let us know the results and could you tell us more abt your computer and mouse. are you 32bit, or 64?

You can fiddle with the click options of the mouse in Control panel - if it is a setting, that often helps.

Usually, though, you find your mouse microswitch has failed and that isn't replaceable.

Another dead mouse - but no happy cat!

edit: somehow I get to be the poster here - site problems????

A:Problem with left click

Hi All

Sorry if this is a silly question, but I have been using computers for a long time and have never had this problem. Just the other day, it seems that whenever I left click on something, the computer automatically double clicks on the item. So for example, when I am in outlook and I click on a email, the email automatically opens all the way up. Then if I click on the X in the upper right hand corner of that email, it closes outlook down. I am using XP. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks,

PC2

Since Jan 1, I've been having a strange problem with not being able to left click on some programs. I cannot left click and open anything from the quick launch bar. When I open some programs, I cannot left click with the program window. When I open Firefox and click on Bookmarks, History etc.. all I see is a quick flash of the drop menu and then nothing. I can click on icons on the desktop, start menu etc..(although that is sometimes intermittent) but not the log out or shutdown buttons. I had AVG Free 7.5 installed and did a scan with that with no problems. I did an online scan with Housecall with no problems. I removed AVG and installed McAfee and scanned with no problems and also with Ad aware. I did do a system restore back to Dec 31 and everything worked fine for about half an hour and then the problems started again. I also tried disabling everything in startup but didn't change anything.

A:left click problem

Problem is still on going. I've tried several virus programs, antispyware programs, Advanced WindowsCare, CCleaner but nothing seems to work. Did a Windows XP repair which helped for about 2 hours and then back to the way it was.
So I've bought a new hard drive, doing a fresh XP install on there and formatting the old hard drive.

Try running cmd.exe as administrator in Safe Mode.

This only applies to my folders, but everytime I left-click them, it gives me the search window instead of opening it. I don't remember changing it to do this, is there a way to change to back to Open?

My TrackPoint is off center, as in when I take the dome off I see the soldered trackpoint hardware and its skewed to the bottom left. When I put the red cap back on, it touches the letter B and its closer to H and far from G key. I have a feeling a lot of the times my trackpoint moves by itself and is caused by this fact. Anyone else have an off centered TrackPoint?

This (Lenovo so-called "support)  is worse than I thought - I mean, there's not a single place that I can talk to a real Lenovo support staff to get this information... No support email address, no phone number, nothing. All I can do is hop on here, hoping to get an answer... Lenovo is quite smart that it has all you enthusiasts working for it, for free. Anyway, all I wanted to know is what kind of trackpoint cap should I order for my X1C 2nd gen? Appreciated,

I have a new X1 Carbon 6th generation. I have noticed that intermittently, the cursor will start drifting around the screen and the trackpad becomes unresponsive. I believe that this is the trackpoint making the cursor move. It lasts between 2-10 seconds and is very frustrating as I can't continue my work. I have tried disabling the trackpoint but I like using the top mouse buttons which get disabled as well with this settting. I have tried reinstalling the input drivers, no luck.Any suggestions? Do I need to return the laptop?

Hello all I have terrible but totally random trackpoint driftinghttps://imgur.com/LCVFRNWIt can be so bad it will drift for the whole screen. during the drift, the touchpad is non-responsive.It'll continue to drift if i keep trying to use the trackpointthe only way to stop is to wait 1-2 mintues hands off trackpoint. If i try to use the trackpoint before the 1-2 minute is up, even if the cursor is still, it will stil drift!   I noticed there's a new firmware for Yoga gen 3 which MAY fix this problem for them.- Is there such a firmware for X1 Carbon Gen 6 ? - does this firmware work with X1 C Gen 6?  i am hesitent to try a firmware. Happily try a driver though!https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/au/en/downloads/DS504047

Drift on my new 7th gen X1 makes the laptop unusable several times throughout the day. Getting carpal tunnel fighting this drift. Very disappointed there is no fix for this. I have purchased a wireless mouse which works with no drift whatsoever but the reason I bought Lenovo was for the trakpoint. If I have to use a wireless mouse I can purchase other brands now. Heat does seem to make this worse. Lenovo are you here?
