Unable to run Symantec Scan Assistant

Q: Unable to run Symantec Scan Assistant

On Win 2000 computer on network.
I'm trying to run the Symantec "Automated Support Assistant"

I'm logged in as the administrator and am getting a message
"We were unable to run the Automated Support Assistant, possibly due to security settings on your computer."

Can someone offer me some guidance.

FYI, I don't have Norton AV on this system it does have eTrust Inoculate"

Preferred Solution: Unable to run Symantec Scan Assistant

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Unable to run Symantec Scan Assistant

In order to use that system, I believe you have to allow a applet to download and install. You may have a setting in your eTrust firewall that is blocking the necessary utility or you may have your browser's security settings set to block it. If it were Zone Alarm Pro, I would suggest you turn off your Mobil Code control... {includes script blocking} You might check Tools > Internet Options > Security and set it to default.

Hi, i hope someone here will be able to help one of our clients.

He is running Symantec Norton Anti Virus and when a full system scan is attempted the error message of:

"Symantec has encountered a problem and needs to close"

appears and proceeds to close Norton.

Live Updates work fine and have also asked the user to run this:

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nip.nsf/pfdocs/2003111811273536

which runs but advises that it cannot detect Norton (!) even though the application loads up.

Any ideas folks?

A:Symantec: Unable to run a full scan.

Symantec has an online checking tool

http://www.symantec.com/home_homeoffice/support/index_ts_ie.jsp

It might identify the problem for the user.

I see that was included in the link you posted now...sorry. However, NAV is not one of the programs that tool checks or, can check and fix, apparently...it's not in the list...

If it's malware affecting the AV, and it sure can, we may be able to help spot it if you do this:

Wait for one of the HJT experts to check your log but, meanwhile, consider disabling one of the firewalls (the XP one since it's only one way?) and see if that helps. Also, check out this list of programs that have problems with SP2;http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=884130&product=windowsxpsp2 and;http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=842242

I downloaded and ran the Symantec scan (given above) to look for the swenA worm.

I didn't think I have it (the virus) but have seen indications it's in some of the files in WINDOWS\TEMP

My AVG anti virus has picked up on those. It brings up a page and asks if the file should be accessed and has Yes No Heal. Since NO is highlighted, and seems safest I click this.

When I started scanning with the Symantec, when it came to one of the TEMP files that has the worm, the AVG page still comes up (it says AVG resident shield on top) with the same 3 options.

I click N and it continues on.

I disabled the active scanning function of AVG, thinking it was getting in the way of the Symantec one. But when it gets to those files (there are 3 or 4) the AVG resident shield page still comes up, and I click N

At the end of the Symantec scan, it said the SwenA worm was NOT found in my computer.

Was this because I was clicking N (no) to accessing it on the AVG page?

Maybe I should have clicked YES, while the Symantec was running and it would have cleaned it or deleted it?

I'm not sure how to disable the resident shield in AVG, I thought right clicking on icon on the taskbar and clicking "shutdown AVG control center" would do it, but apparently it's still running in the background.

Since the worm is in TEMP files, it seems like it might be easy to delete them, with no problem. I found the TEMP INTERNET FILES in WINDOWS and deleted them (they all looked like c... Read more

A:Symantec online scan vulnerability

Response from Symantec:

The current ActiveX Control - which can be named Symantec RuFSI Utility Class or Symantec RuFSI Registry Information Class - contains a buffer overflow exploit. The buffer overflow can be exploited when the user with this ActiveX Control visits a malicious website intent on exploiting this vulnerability. The exploit can cause Internet Explorer to crash and/or the execution of arbitrary code on the user's computer.
Symantec has replaced the current ActiveX Control on the Symantec Security Check website so that new visitors will not be affected by the exploit.
Recent visitors to Symantec Security Check should revisit the site and run a new Security Scan. By running a new scan, the previous ActiveX Control will be replaced by an updated ActiveX Control that fixes the buffer overflow condition.
Advanced users can attempt to delete the ActiveX Control by rebooting and then going into the system folder: %SystemRoot%\Downloaded Program Files\ and delete "rufsi.dll". This must be done by using the command prompt and the user must not be on the Symantec Security Check site at the time.Click to expand...

I did not have this Symantec thing before my new hard drive was installed, so if re-installing the XP disc picked up all new updates, etc. maybe it IS a part of Outlook Express. I have Norton antivirus already, so thank you if you can tell me how to disbable the Symantec.
It seems to cause other applications to almost freeze for the few seconds it takes to scan the outgoing e-mail. I already have anti virus thru my ISP mail server, so do not need this additonal scan provided by Symantec.

Re: Symantec Endpoint Protection (12.1.5)

Under scanning you have two choices, quickscan and fullscan.
Quickscan scans only a few important files most likely to be infected.

It says a fullscan scans the whole computer.
My question is: Does this mean it scans only C drive (the OS partition) or does it mean that all drives/partions are scanned?

I could just run the fullscan and find out, but there are a lot of installation files on one of my other partitions (other than C drive) and I don't want to be surprised to see any of them deleted.

A:Symantec Full System Scan (SEP)

Hi and welcome to SevenForums,
Usually when a full scan is selected a dialog box will appear for additional choices of all drives connected at that time and I suppose partitions as well,
I'm also sure there are settings you can exclude partitions/ drives from that scan although I would not probably exclude them
All drives and or partitions need to be scanned at least once,
After that is just depends on personal preference and how much you save stuff directly to the other loactions as to how much you scan them,
Cheers.

I'll just add a security suite as protective as Norton might throw a fit if you don't eventually scan them.

Symantec 'security scan' distributes rootkit

"Symantec Security Check is a free web-based tool that enables users to test their computer's exposure to a wide range of on-line threats," the press release begins. Unfortunately, Symantec Security Check has also been installing an on-line threat of its own in the form of a dangerous ActiveX control.

"The ActiveX control, named Symantec RuFSI Utility Class or Symantec RuFSI Registry Information Class, contains a buffer overflow exploit," the company says, though we're nearly certain they mean that it's exploitable, not that it's actually been infected with something. But you never know; the press release is one of those waffly ones that doesn't quite tell you everything you want to hear.

I have Symantec Endpoint Protection Version 11.0.4202.75 on my HP L/T with Windows 7.
When I try to run any scans with Symantec, I get a message saying "Symantec Antivirus has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working properly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available"

Do I have a virus? I also have scan configured to scan upon startup, and the enabled column says No, so I go in to select yes, save it, and it still says No for enabled.
The computer has been running pretty slow, with some programs hanging up, which caused me to look into this.

Can someone point me inthe right direction?

I use this L/T for work and it is very important to keep it clean and running for me.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Good morning ...

While running my Norton Anti-Virus (full scan) it said it detected the following
Trojan Horse and quarantined it. This was the second time in two weeks.

Here is the description of the Trojan Horse:
Last week:

C:WINDOWS\system32\SoftwareDistribution\Setup\ServiceStartup\wups.dll\Winupdate\hide.batI deleted it both times and than ran NAV full system scan and it was clean.

After this week, I went to the NAV Help page and it talks about going to the registry and deleting the value ... I have never done that ..

They tell you to go to:

On a network we are using, we have a domain structure where we are a sort of child section of a larger network. We have a Symantec Server on the parent network but not on our side. I am requesting to find out how to create a Symantec Virus Server, for scanning purposes and for Liveupdate. I will need to be able to have all our computers pull their Virus Definitions from us and be able to do a network wide scan for all the computers on our network. If you can help me out with this I would appreciate it.

I hope someone can please offer some much-needed assistance with this. On my machine (running Windows XP Service Pack 2), about every 1 or 2 minutes I get a very fast pop-up on the windows taskbar. The pop-up is very fast, and only way I have been able to see what it says is by using Print Screen to grab a screenshot. The pop up claims to be part of Symantec, and looks like it is checking an outgoing e-mail. It is doing this every minute or two though. My machine is running Symantec Anti-virus, with Lotus Notes as the e-mail client, but this problem even occurs when Notes is not running. From comments made on other forums, people seem to agree this is sort sort of worm, but comments are a bit patchy as to how to solve the issue! I have tried running various spy scans (Norton, SpyBot and Advanced Windows Care scans) but nothing is picked up. Please see below result from DDS text file (attach.txt is attached seperately as requested):

Hi,

I'm running Windows 7 on a secure domain with many GPOs applied, SEP client is also installed.
When running a scan, either by right-clicking on a file and selecting "scan for viruses" or from within the SEP client window, I get an error message "Symantec Endpoint Protection could not open this dialog".
I've found the GPO rule that's preventing the window from opening, it's User Account Control: Run all administrators in Admin Approval mode. Once this is disabled and the PC is rebooted, the dialog opens fine.
Turning off any function of UAC or even this specific rule can't be done, as it's required to be left as it is..
Any way of allowing the SEP scan window to run without disabling UAC settings?

Thanks

Hi, I posted awhile ago that my computer was infected by a virus last week and thanks to one of your moderators Byteman, my problems were solved and all the viruses have presumably been removed. However, my computer is still having trouble to run the symantec online virus scanner. I was able to download and install the activeX control and the virus definition from the symantec site. But after everything has installed and the scanner was about to scan my computer, an error message pops up and says,

"Unable to run Virus Detection

In order to run Virus Detection you must be using Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher with ActiveX and Scripting enabled.

To learn more, see our Help."

My computer is brand new and only about 2 and a half months old. IE is up-to-date and I double-checked that activex and scriptin are enabled. I used this scanner online a month ago and it worked fine. What makes me worried is that after the virus attack, I am now unable to run this online scanner. I suspect that there is still something lurking behind my computer. Other online virus scanners like kaspersky and trend micro work fine on my computer. I don't know what's going on and I hope you guys can help me!

I have a problem with a virus that I can't seem to get rid of!
My Symantec Antivirus Corporate keeps showing during a realtime scan that I have the trojan.bookmarker.gen virus. I did recently have problems with a variation of a start page blank virus. I have followed Symantecs instructions for the removal of the trojan.bookmarker.gen virus and also the trojan.bookmaker virus. I removed some entries in the registry that keep defaulting my homepage to blank and now my home page stays the same.
I have done numerours scans in safe mode, but they have shown no virus. I have done online scans with Trendmicro and I have run trojanhunter 3.9, spybot S & D, ad-aware, sysclean and others all showing no virus and still my realtime scan keeps showing I have this virus. I have also researched on line with other antivirus makers on how to remove the virus and variations of it and still no joy!
This problem occurs on my laptop running windows XP Prof SP1, with all updates.
I have set up at home a wireless network with my desktop and my sons computer running broadband and noticed that while I was away recently on business that when I connected my laptop to the lan port at the hotels my realtime scan didn't seem to come up with this virus. On my return home I thought there might be someting affecting my wireless connection causing my laptop to experience this problem, and tried just connecting with the lan line, but to no avail I still keep getting realtime scan messages!! on bo... Well I got a big problem.

A couple days ago I noticed network connectivity issues. Random connection drops, overall bad connection, etc. I recently had some really bad malware and I removed it, so I suspected leftover malware from the start. I went to check Windows Update to see if I missed a security update, and it wasn't even on my computer. Something removed the service completely off my computer, so I found a .reg to fix it. I then started Windows Update and found that I had 30 updates missing and updated all of them successfully.

I then decided to see what was going on with my Windows Firewall, only to find that it was also removed. Wasn't in my services or anything. So I downloaded the .reg to fix that, tried to activate the service, only to run into another roadblock that I still haven't been able to fix, an error stating

"The Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) Service on local computer started then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs".

Ok. So I checked my services again and I believe that some more were completely missing(Base Filtering Engine, NSI proxy Service). So to try and remedy this, I attempted an sfc /scannow in elevated cmd prompt.

Then another brick wall. I get to 59% and then I get this message

"Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation".

Trustedinstaller service is turned on, so I have no idea why I'm getting this message. But... Read more

When I try removing it through the Add/Remove programs, it goes through the sequnce of removing it, but it still remains. Tried the Norton Removal Tool - it does not load on the machine (server is running Server 2000). Contacted Symantec and they gave me a link that instructed me to do many registry changes, which I did. I also deleted all files and folders associated with Symantec as well. After making the changes, the AV client still appears in the Add/Remove programs, except now "Remove" is greyed out. I need to upgrade this system with a more current version of AV software, but can't since a "Legacy Symantec product is still installed" Anyone have any experience with this? Something has taken over my computer. This virus closed my Zone Alarm firewall and AVG Anti Virus programs and I am unable to get them on again! I'm unable to run a HijackThis or run Malewarebytes programs either. The only way I can get online, is via shortcuts in my favorites menu, which I opened from a documents folder.

When this first happened, an "XP Total Security" window kept opening , and doing a scan for viruses at every reboot. Then it would prompt me to a website, to buy a program to fix it.

I was unable to run msconfig to uncheck it at start-up. I am unable to open the add/remove page in the control panel.

My computer is a 2005 HP Pavilion zv6000 series laptop, running XP.

I also tried System Restore, which I tried to run from Safe Mode, but it would not go back to before the problem.

I am unable to run any .exe programs at all.

I tried to Format the drive, but it would not let me do it.

I need this computer to find a job. I wish I could get a new computer one, but I just don't have the money.

PLEASE HELP!
