2008, 2008 R2 Enterprise server event tracing question

Q: 2008, 2008 R2 Enterprise server event tracing question

In the DISA Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGS) there is a test for event tracing (#V31026).
The STIG indicates that if you are running Win 2008 the absence of etwenable = false is not a 'finding' because event tracing is enabled by default (on 2008 servers) and it should be enabled and running.
Is this the same for windows 2008 R2 Enterprise Server?
I cannot find the element etwenable in my 2008 R2 Enterprise server test system, it does not exist.
Does that mean the requirement for the STIG is met, and event tracing IS enabled by default on Win 2008 R2 Enterprise Servers? No further action is required to enable?

Is there an easy way to verify it actually is enabled? Check registry value, run script?

Excerpt from the STIG:
Microsoft Dot Net Framework 4.0 STIG
Rule Title: Event tracing for Windows (ETW) for Common Language Runtime events must be enabled.
STIG ID: APPNET0067 Rule ID: SV-41075r1_rule
Vuln ID: V-31026
Severity: CAT II Class: Unclass
Beginning with Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, ETW Tracing is enabled by default and the "etwEnable" setting is not required in order for Event Tracing to be enabled.
An etwEnable setting of "true" IS required in earlier versions of Windows as ETW is disabled by default.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

GPOs probably set correct, firewalls disabled for test purposes. I get this in the event viewer on the 2008 R2 machine (our administrative console server) when trying to connect to the W7 machine:
There was a problem interacting with COM object 833E4010-AFF7-4AC3-AAC2-9F24C1457BCE. An outdated version might be installed, or the component might not be installed at all.
This seems to indicate that Remote Assistance from 2008 R2 is trying to use Help & Support (the guid) instead of MSRA. Bug or am I missing something?

So it's not Vista, but since there isn't a board for Server 2008, and since Server 2008 is Vista's code, I figured why not.
Does anyone know if the evaluation copy of Server 2008 that can be downloaded from here:

can be activated/converted to a fully licensed version without uninstalling? (That is to say, if I enter a product key)

I have having been trying to download Server 2008 from MSDNAA but the software is hosted onsite and we're apparently having trouble with our servers. I can obtain my product key, but the .iso download isn't working. The link I included seems to suggest that the evaluation copy can be activated with a key without uninstalling, but the rep I talked with at MS tech support didn't think so, but she also said she wasn't "technically trained" and she also seemed to think I was talking about Server 2003, no matter how many times I corrected her with 2008.

I thought I'd give the evaluation a try, but the download is almost 3 GB which will take a few hours, so if someone knows it can't be done in the mean time I can cancel the download. (And then, after downloading it, I will have to actually install it which I don't have time for if it is not going to work... Kind of a catch-22--I don't have time for it unless it's going to work, but I'm not going to know unless I ... Read more

On Server 2008 when you create a DNS forwarding address, and a client on the domain, types google.com, the DC uses the fowarding address on the DC to find out the ip, in place of itself or interface addresses, right? Also on the Server (DC) itself it uses the DNS servers defined under network properties for its own DNS lookups, right?

A:Server 2008 Question

The machine will attempt to contact whatever DNS server is listed in it's network properties first. In the case of your domain controller, it will look to itself to see what domains it's authoritative for, and for everything else, it will use root hints to query additional domain controllers on the internet to determine the answer.

When you put in a forwarder, you typically do so, for either
1). Everything else that you aren't authoritative for
2). A specific domain...for example. *.mycompanieswebsite.com.

So, in the event that you are trying to accomplish #2 above, if you attempted to resolve the name of server1.mycompanieswebsite.com...your DNS server would try to answer it itself if it can (if it's authoritative for the zone) and if not, it will then send the query to the DNS server you have listed as the forwarder for *.mycompanieswebsite.com.

Hope that helps.

So I just got this email from MS, and this is what really stood out to me:

We are virtually on the eve of releasing Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 and our main concern at this point is your readiness and awareness of all the new goodness that accompanies those products. Windows Server 2008 R2 evaluation bits are set for availability on Friday, August 14, a week earlier than previously reported. On Friday, check out the Windows Server TechCenter on TechNet for info on how and where to download the 180-day evaluation bits.

So, am I to take this to mean that any Server 2008 R2 build that I download from Technet is timebombed? I'm pretty sure it says right there on the subscription page that one of the benefits to Technet is that all software is not timebombed. Am I reading this wrong, or what?

I have a question about Mysql server 2008 R2

What is my server name if I select to install with "Named Instance" not "Default Instance"

with Mixed mode password

I don't know this because I used to install with Named Instance : neneka and mixed mode password 12345

but I can't login because I don't know what my server name is

user id should be : neneka right ? and maybe password is 12345

A:Question about installing Mysql server 2008 R2

When using named instances, the server name is of the form [ComputerName]\[InstanceName]
When using the default instance, it's only [ComputerName]

You can alternatively replace the computer name with the IP or "localhost" if it's on the very same box. And on the login dialog, if you open the server name combobox, the option "browse for more" can be used to help you locate the servers in the network too.
Also verify if the server service is running. For named instances to connect over a network, you also need the SQL Browser service running (not needed for the default instance).

BTW, you should rename the post to SQL Server, as it has nothing to do with MySql.

If I may break topic here, I'm looking for an answer on something. I currently have one server running Exchange 2007, on a Server 2008 R2 box. I have 27 users on the server, and we have never had limits on e-mail size...not for mailbox or attachment. I'm looking to start implementing both limits, but I'm not sure of how or the best way to do so. Any Exchange admins out there who can make suggestions? I don't know much about Exchange or PowerShell, so keep that in mind. I am the lone admin in this company, so admin rights to the box are not problem.

A:Server 2008 R2 / Exchange 2007 question

So, mailbox limits. These are enforced on the database itself and can be done on a per user basis.

Open Exchange Management Console, expand Server Configuration, Pick Mailbox, Find your mailbox database and right click Properties, click on Limits Tab. Set them here

For individual users: From Exchange Management Console, expand Recipient Configuration, click on Mailbox. Find the user in question. Go to their properties, Mailbox settings tab, select storage quotas, click on properties, uncheck box for "use database defaults", set manually per user.

Now, for maximum size limits, these are defined on the connectors. Open Exchange Management Console, expand Hub Transport, look through your receive connectors, properties, set Maximum Message size
on the General tab.
With respect to setting limits, I set a warning and then I prevent sending emails once limit is hit. You don't want to prevent somebody from ever receiving email. Once they hit limit and cannot send, they will clean themselves up.

The problem i am having is this...The Server 2008 installed fine on my little home server here. Runs smooth. However when i try to play MP3s on it it will run but if i start doing anything else next thing i know my cpu usage spikes to 100 and the song slows down and gets all choppy. Just opening media player sets my cpu usage at 15 percent doing nothing. This happens using the onboard sound and it happens if disable it in the bios and use the audigy.

Question i have is anyone have an answer to this? I would like to play music under Server 2k8 if anyone can figure this out. I know that vista has issues with nforce 2 but i never did know what the exact issue was that prevented nvidia from releasing the driver for it.

Im thinking there is some sort of issue with how the resources are handled with this Athlon XP cpu on this chipset. However i have read where others have had no issues at all using Vista on their nforce 2's. Either they are lying or they know some trick. The vista trick should work on server 2008 as well.

What i have done trying to solve the problem. Keep in mind i did this AFTER i found the problem so its not causing it:
Installed XP drivers for the memory controllers, Gart, and IDE
Used a Sound Blaster Audigy
Tried to force XP amd driver but failed.

A:Macafee Enterprise 2008

Well, I just did a McAfee install 2008 this week. If I configure McAfee to turn off some of the scan options, the control center looks like this. And if I click "FIX", it resets the options to on. So when you click "FIX", nothing happens?

Did you have another anti-virus program that may not have been completely removed?

Maybe you could remove 2008 and re-install it.

Hi guys,
What free Antivirus software for servers?
What free anti-malware would NOT be a good idea?
My friend has purchased a Poweredge server to act as a fileserver for a private network not connected to the internet..  He uses 2 laptops at the most  to access files on the server.
However at some points he will update Windows Server 2008 plus odd bits by temporaily hooking up to the Internet., and obviously leave himself open to malware etc. for a short time.
The cost of server Antivirus is very high and usually effective for 10 workstations upwards, and obviously he would appreciate keeping costs down.
I would appreciate thoughts on ideas for avoiding a costly solution.
Also, if he got Malware on it (e.g. Rootkit or Delta) would current Bleeping Computer tools (e.g. Rkill, RogueKiller etc) still work on the server - or does it require another approach?
I am asking fior advice BEFORE he gets started while options are open.
Thanks in advance guys

A:Free Server Antivirus ? e.g. for Windows Server 2008

The answer is fairly simple. Just read the details on the site -
Microsoft Security Essentials is available for small businesses with up to 10 PCs.
• Microsoft Security Essentials:
Microsoft updated it’s free Anti-Virus solution at the end of 2010 to support Windows 2008/R2.
This is easily one of the better free offerings as Microsoft has updated this solution to complete directly with some of the biggest solutions, such as Mcafee and Symantec paid versions.

When downloading, simply choose Windows Vista / Windows 7, as Microsoft has yet to update the website.http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

We had:

1) 1 Windows Server 2003 running Active Directory services to manage logon and permissions for file sharing.
2) 15 workstations.

We now want to have:

1) 1 Windows Server 2008 R2 server running Active Directory services to manage logon and permissions for file sharing.
2) 15 same workstations, with their same user profiles.

So I joined the 2008 R2 server to the domain, and then used the dcpromo tool to make it a domain controller.

Problem is, whenever I take the old server offline, (the 2003 one) everything flips out, logons are slow, and the 2008 server gives people trying to access shared files weird errors like that the server that authenticated them cannot be contacted, and asks them to log in again with their username and password before accessing shared files on the server.

What did I do wrong? I must be forgetting something.

I know this is a Win & forum but I am thinking about setting up a Win Server 2008 R2 server to learn how to administer a server. As you might guess I really know nothing about how to even get started and am not an IT person, just someone that likes to tinker with computers.

Can someone recommend a path ie books, classes, online classes etc to get me started?

A:Server 2008 R2

Ok you might think Im nuts, but look into the "For Dummies" Books I own a few myself and they are great for giving you ideas and hints on setting things up and remembering things with the way they are worded.
Also since 2008r2 is still so new it might be hard to find info on it. I would look into Server 2003 first then you can grab a book on 2008 since 90% of server stuff is just updated from one to another with added items here and there. Also grabbing the older copy will be a bit cheaper on the wallet then you can go from there about spending the extra cash.

Set up a server for my home network, server + laptop + desktop, using Windows Server 2008 R2. I am experimenting with an FTP site, my 1st try at any of this.

Set up the FTP site OK. When entering the site address into a browser address bar, am promted for a User Name and Password for logon.

Does anyone know where, or how, I set up the User Name and Password?

A:Server 2008 R2 and FTP

You set them up as local users on the box. Or, if you are running a domain, you set up their accounts in active directory users and computers.

Technically, you need a CAL (client access license) for each user account that you set up...or you need the Internet connector license if you are going to let the public get to it. Hence the reason that I never use Windows boxes as FTP servers.

All I seem to be able to find is the x64 version of R2. Does anyone know if they're actually making a 32bit version?

This seems to be a common question on many forums but I have yet to find an adequate solution. In connecting my Seagate NAS 440 to my Server 2008 R2 and joining it to the domain, I am no longer able to access it through the browser by the IP address. If I run the NAS utility it finds no process on the other end of the pipe. If I attempt by NetBios Name it connects just find. The issue is I have some devices on my network (Scanners/Copiers) that don't communicate well with anything but the IP address. I have tried firmware upgrades, DNS Forward/Reverse Lookup, NS2 Authentication Level, reinstallations on both ends and nothing seems to work. Please help with any information.

anyone tried messing with server 2008 yet? was wondering if it would be worth switching my 2k3 server over to it, and what has changed? have heard some good and bad things about it(mostly good) but still not that convinced seeing as how my server works just fine for right now....

any thoughts?

I loaded server 2008 to play with for a couple of days... I WON'T use it for production. It's vista with active directory and I personally don't like it.

I installed some patches on my Server (2008 R2) after which the box won't boot into windows. It stays on "Applying computer settings" and then it stops all services and proceed to shutdown.

I can boot into safe mode. From the event log I get a wmi event (10):

I have a Server 2008 with Fax service installed and working. I cannot get either my Win 7 workstations nor my XP workstations to connect to the fax server. Both can connect to \\server\fax as a printer, but neither can actually function.

The Win 7 Fax & Scan says "You do not have security permissions to complete this operation" when I try to add the \\server as an account. XP says something similar.

Has anyone resolved this issue reliably?

Hey guys,

I have a scenario assignment i have to do. One part is driving me crazy as what I'm doing is not working..

Basically I have two server 2008's running. One the domain controller, the other a file server. They are both connected to each other through the domain 'augusta.globalgoods.local'. I have created the users and global groups i need to in the active directory and placed them in the appropriate places.

I have to create a shared network drive hosted on both of the computers. In order to get the permissions right, I have to create the domain local groups. This is where I get confused. The possibilities of the domain local groups are:
-globalgoodsusers - Read
-globalgoodsmanagers- Read
-globalgoodsmanagers - Full control
-Administrators - Full control

I am currently logged on as administrator and cannot create anything in the folders. the structure i have is USER>GLOBAL GROUP>DOMAIN LOCAL GROUP. Is this right?

Can someone walk me through how to properly install shared network drive with the appropriate permissions for the right user accounts?

Thanks, and sorry for the long post!

Is it possible to have these both on disk?
has anyone had any issues?

Which should I install first for that matter?

A:Win 7 and Server 2008 R2

Do you mean the same HDD or the same DVD (aka a backup disk)?

If it is the latter then I don't believe you can, but if it is the former then yes as long as you create a separate partition for etch OS (Partition or Volume - Create New)

Hi all, I've recently promoted a Windows Server 2008 DC to primary and assumed all the AD and DNS rolls to it. It's working well and DNS is working on it. I have also forwarded the service providers dns to it.
The setup is that it's the only server handing out internal dns to 4 separate locations with 3 locations on Comcast and one on Windstream T1.
If the location that the server is at goes offline I loose internet access at the other three locations (and always did even with the original server). Work station's are setup with dynamic ip/dns.
We use Linksys RV042 VPN's and my thought is to setup the second dns on them to be Comcasts and in the one location WindStreams. However when I add the entry on the VPN routers I break internal name resolution of the PC's on the network and users have to use IP addresses of our Terminal servers.
What I'd like to do is have the other locations still have internet access even if the internal DNS server is down. Is there a way to do this? The RV042's have dual wan so maybe I could use the Failover with different dns numbers and have it go to the same modem or any other ideas?

Thanks as always in advance for any ideas,

A:Do i have server R2 2008 or Win 7 sp1 ?

Control Panel>System and Security>System, look under the Windows edition heading.
Server 2008 R2 is designed to run things like file servers, print servers, domain controllers, Exchange servers, etc. Windows 7 is for desktops.
