I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a Precision T 1500 that served me well for the past five years. I teach online and create animations, video, and photo work. The machine is on about 20 hours every day of the week. It overheats. I have an external fan, which helped.
So, I am looking to upgrade. I'm looking at the Precision 5000 or 7000 series or XPS. I want a machine that is very fast and reliable with space for my media projects. What do you all suggest? Please share with me your dream configuration. I am looking at Xeon rather than i-7 series as I think they run cooler. I currently have two hard drives, 1 gb NVIDIA quadro 600 and creative sound blaster soundcard. I need something to get me through the next five years and then I can retire!! Thanks, Ginna

A:Your Dream Machine?

What software must the computer support?
Do you need ECC memory for something like AutoCAD?
Must it have a Quadro? or can a GTX graphics card work?
How much total storage (TerraBytes) do you need?
Without knowing it is hard to recommend, but the XPS 8900 on sale, then add memory, add an SSD and then replace the graphics card with a nvidia GTX 1060 and you will have a solid system.
I did suggest an 8900. The XPS 8910 changed the case design and I'm not sure about it yet.
Dell probably doesn't like me saying this, but I find the cheapest XPS with a core i7 is the way to go, then upgrade Memory, SSD and graphics card.
Animation and video tend to like more memory, and more cores, so in today's world, the i7 is just the entry point, but coming from an i7 860 will be a significant bump in speed.
I'm not sure I buy into the Xeon running cooler and it depends on the Xeon.
So, do tell us more about what you are doing and the recommendation might improve.

I've spent two days trying to fix this myself, and I'm feeling quite deflated and desperate at this point. Please help me if you can.

I worked towards being able to build this brand new, incredible PC for the last year, and as far as I can tell all the hardware is living up to my expectations. However, I keep experiencing WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR BSODs. Typically they seem to happen while watching a video on one screen and editing photos or web browsing on the other, but I have experienced them at other times as well. I thought it was due to a new Intel ethernet driver not being compatible with Windows 8 and that I had the problem licked after a third clean install and careful process of driver updates, but it just happened again.

I've stress tested and monitored temps on my CPU. Samsung Magician says the SSD running my OS is in good health (it's an 840 Pro and should be very reliable). The Windows memory diagnostic tool gave my RAM a pass. I put my graphics card through all the 3DMark tests. My gut says this isn't hardware, but maybe that's wishful thinking. I used a program called BlueScreenView to look at the minidumps, and it indicates that the problem is hal.dll and possibly ntoskrnl.exe, but from what I understand that is a very vague clue.

I don't know what else I can do to try to resolve this problem and finally begin to enjoy this hard-earned PC. Please help. If I've failed to adhere to forum standards or attached the files properly, I will correct immedi... Read more

A:Built my dream machine, but it BSODs with WHEA errors

ntoskrnl.exe is the kernel (core) of the operating system. If it was having problems you'd have many more issues other than just the occasional BSOD.

hal.dll is the file that enables the devices to communicate with Windows - so again, if it was a problem with this file you'd have many more issues other than the occasional BSOD.

The STOP 0x124 error is most often a hardware error - but it can also be caused by low level drivers/compatibility issues.

You have 3 hard drives. What is the make/model/wattage and age of your Power Supply?

This device has issues in Device Manager:

BLUE USB Audio 2.0 USB\VID_074D&PID_0002\0000 This device cannot start.

Please uninstall it and physically remove it from your system to see if that stops the BSOD's. Also, please note that your audio drivers date from 2008 (and it appears that you've updated them recently). Once the testing is done, feel free to attempt to install the latest, Win8 compatible drivers for this device - but please be advised that I've seen previous issues with these drivers (and Creative said to another poster that they were Win8 compatible, and that I've also seen lot's of issues with USB sound devices.

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system u... Read more

simple.. it don't work vista home premium that is

got an express upgrade with my acer t-180... from the "wonderful" moduslink.. only took them 4 times to actually get my order correct..

it installs.. then slowly and surely corrupts itself saying files and the drive itself are corrupt.. which is bunk , as I'm running XP fine on it.. chkdsk runs.. says it's finding orphaned files etc.. goes online.. updates, messes up even more.. till a point where it says "not genuine".. odd that i'm now looking at TWO COA stickers, 1 for the express upgrade, the other for the one I received that I ordered last week.

so I thought hhmm maybe the express upgrade , today I've got the full version that I ordered .. and guess what.. same again..

I've stripped down the machine to as I got it, e.g. took out memory, new gfx card etc.. clean hard drive, still no joy.. so maybe the mobo at fault?

a "em61sm / em61pm" which I've also updated the bios for..

I've rung both acer and MS neither will help.. It's quite damning to see how badly it *coughs* up... acer say.. oh but it's with XP and that works fine? which it does..

MS tell me , oh it's oem.. go back to the maker.. OR we can charge you ?46 an hour.. because i'm using something they haven't 100% tested.. if they had it would work.. is my attitude.. I've been using pc's since Dos 3.3.. and well this makes the IRQ conflict problems of years ago seem like nothing in comparision.

I'm so annoyed that program has caused me so much hassle.. I used "gparted" to resize the drives.. it's a free program for that..

A:Gaming machine or Laming machine?

I'm looking to build a new machine, as mine is well over a couple of years old. I was wondering if anybody knows the difference in between a computer gaming machine, and a graphics machine? I do a lot of graphics on here, but also weill be getting back into gaming.

A:Gaming Machine Vs. Graphic Machine

Everyone i know who does graphics has a mac, (shudder)
and everyone i know who plays games has a PC,

Heh, i know this didnt help you out to much, but i couldnt resist.

Knowing not jack about graphics, I would think that the better processor and vid card you can get, with lots of ram, you should be able to do pretty much anything. Games take computing power, as do graphics from my understanding, so i would think the higher end rig you can get, the better off you will be.

Hey there, i am having a problem with my Creative Fatal1ty Gaming Headset - the microphone doesn't want to work... oddly. I have tried the sound setting but it doesn't seem to work.
I started of by going to Sound > Recording > then it says three thing:
Microphone .... with a tick beside it ... working
Microphone FP .... Not Plugged in (When it clearly is)(Headset comes with detachable Mic)
Digital In... working.

Also when i try fiddle with the setting to enable the microphone it does not let me "configure" it .... and when i try set up the microphone it doesn't want to start up unless i disable the microphone it would say "Wizard could not start"

My Microphone is not on mute and the the jacks are correctly colour coded in place.
My sound Cards is : Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeMusic
Headset: Creative Fatal1ty Gaming Headset - Noise Cancellation Microphone with Gold Plated 3.5mm Jack
It the one with the detachable microphone - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/128208
The microphone is defiantly working when i configure the speakers, so that i can speak through the microphone and hear out the speakers but i can't record
Thank You, look forward in reading your replies

I have a new MSI KT6V motherboard and a AMD Sempron 2600+ processor. I have installed the cpu onto the board but when it boots I can see the cpu fan start and then stop after a few seconds. I have tried a couple of different mb's and processors, cpu fans and get the same results. I have also tried different psu's and tried the board outside of the case.

Has anyone expereinced this or have any ideas what could cause it?

A:machine won't post

this is a common problem, caused by either bad parts or human erroe (it's more likely to be the latter). did you use any static shock protection during the installation? is your board and it's attached perhiperals mounted correctly in the case?

I have a new A8N motherboard that will not boot. This is a replacement to another board that bit the dust. When I plug in the power cables the machine will turn on just fine. However the video card/usb ports/ethernet are not receiving power. The power supply is a Enermax Liberty 500. I am powering this up outside of the case, barebones. If I plug the hard drives in they seem to get power (I can hear them spin).

The Liberty is a 20+4 power connector. On the original board I had a similar problem to what I am having now. I had to just use the 20 pin and leave the +4 off.

Neither the Enermax or Asus website was worth a damn.

Hi all!

I am looking to build a new system, mainly to play D3 but also for image editing and longevity/"future-proof" (hoping to have it running for 4-5 yrs as my main system with only minor upgrades). Have a maximum budget of $1,600 CAD, including any shipping & taxes, minus any instant rebates (mail in rebates don't count as some times they don't come through). I am open to online shopping as well, if it's a cheaper price for the same item, including shipping & tax.

Some things to keep in mind:

Want to have a SSD for the OS, apps, games, etc;
I already have a 1TB WD Green 7200 RPM SATA 3 drive to store data.
No monitor required.
What I've gathered so far as some options (however am open to your suggestions around the full build):

Case: Thermaltake Chaser MK-I ATX Full Tower Black USB3.0 (VN300M1W2N) - $156.99 @ Canada Computers.

CPU: Intel Core i5-3450 Quad-Core Socket 1155, 3.1Ghz, 6MB L3 Cache, 22nm (Retail Boxed) Gen3 (BX806237I53450 / BX80637I53450) - $199.99 @ Tigerdirect.ca

GPU: Asus HD7850-DC2-2GD5 AMD 7850 Chipset (870Mhz) 2GB (4840MHz) GDDR5 Dual DVI/Dual Mini DisplayPort/HDMI PCI-Express 3.0 Graphics Card - $269.99

PSU: Corsair Enthusiast Series TX750 V2 750W 80PLUS Bronze Certified Power Supply (CMPSU-750TXV2) - $94.99 @ Canada Computers

Optical Drive: LG CH12LS28 12X Blu-Ray Reader & Lightscribe DVD Writer Combo Drive - $59.99 - NCIX

A:Gaming machine help

If you're only looking to play D3 a 7850 will be overkill, even a GTX 460 will get you 60fps at 1920x1080. If you're also playing more demanding games then it's a decent choice. When it comes to GPUs forget about future proofing, graphics cards depreciate very quickly and if you're only playing D3 now then grab a GTX 460/560 and upgrade when you need more power.

The rest of your build looks good but you've left out the mobo and the RAM. For the SSD get either the Crucial m4 or Samsung 830 drives.

I'm building a new computer for a friend, and I'm stumped. Here goes:

(no-name) ECS K7VZM mainboard
AMD Duron 800
128M RAM

Here's what happens:

I turn on the computer, and it gets past the POST, displays the "Press DEL to enter setup", and then just...hangs. No keyboard activity (no lights when I hit NumLock, etc.) and nothing will rouse it.

This computer has the CPU, mainboard, RAM, video card, and keyboard connected. That's it. Once and only once, one of my "Del" key presses got through and I saw the opening screen of the BIOS setup, but then it hung just as hard as before.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this? I am, frankly, stumped. Thanks in advance for any help!

I think I'm pretty well screwed here. My main machine is having a pretty catastrophic issue. It's a Dell Inspiron from about 2 years ago. AMD Phenom X4, 4 gb RAM, win7x64, all that.

For a few days, it wouldn't post. After forcing a power down about 4-5 times, it would boot ok. Also tried unplugging and letting the charge go on the PSU. This did not have an effect, sometimes the machine would boot up afterwards, but sometimes not.

Fast forward to this morning, 12-15 tries, no post. I'm putting together an order for a new mobo, an ATX case (because Dell proprietary junk is a bummer), and some new RAM, then put the rest of the old gear in the new case. Now, is my problem on the Inspiron likely the motherboard, or bad RAM? Since it won't post I just assumed it's a fried mobo.

Hi all,

Wondering what you think the best pre-built gaming PC is that is currently out there.

I know that custom built or user built PCs are superior to anything pre-built, but before I do this, I would like to get some experience with less expensive equipment, such as cheap hardware or taking apart off-lease PCs and putting them back together.

I'm just asking for a reference, still gotta make some cash before I can buy anything.

I will be awaiting your replies .

A:Best prebuilt gaming machine

well, if you want a pc that you can just take apart, i believe packard bells interior is very similar to standard desktops, and they're cheap for pre-built systems, (im aware that all interiors are similar but dell for example use colour coded slots for their non-experienced employees), i'm sure someone could donate a system to you if you haven't got the cash, have you tried local computer stores for old spares that are getting thrown away or a business that's refurbishing?

I just priced out a Dell computer, which is promoted as a business machine, but the specs look hot enough to make a fairly decent gaming machine. Any thoughts?

Intel® Core? 2 Duo P8700 w/VT (2.53GHz, 3MB L2, 1066MHz FSB)
Genuine Windows® 7 Professional, with Media, 32-bit, English
4GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 800MHz, 2 DIMM
500GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive with Free Fall Sensor
NVIDIA® GeForce? 9300M GS 256MB

I realize that Dell's XPS is designed for gamers, but I was surprised at the specs on this baby targeted for IE, Outlook, Word and Excel users.

I consider myself pretty knowledgeable, and I was stunned to see a business machine with these specs.

A:How about this business machine for gaming?

9300GS won't rock the world of gaming with its performance. It's a decent 'entry level' mobile graphics solution. You can play some games on it; with low details. However, older games like Q3 or UT etc. will do just about fine. Other then that the system specs are very attractive; except ..... the Operating System; if you want to have this notebook see whether you can switch from x86 (32bit win7) to x64 windows 7.

Reason being the x86 windows won't be able to utilize roughly beyond 3.4 GB of ram due to limitations / other devices memory space issues etc.

This is what I am going to buy for 200 bones; Soyo motherboard, Athlon XP 2800+, 512 MB PC2700 Ram. I already have a Geforce 4200 Ti. I don't want to run these games at full settings. I want medium settings and 800*600 resolution. Please tell me if this rig is good for games like the ones I mentioned. Thanks a bunch.

A:Opinions on gaming machine

Day of Defeat ( being based on the original HalfLife engine ) would run smoothly on a 1GHZ machine & above ( especially with your card ). UT2003 will also run fine with that setup.

As for Battlefield, I believe Acid plays it a lot & has an AthlonXP 2600+ himself. He has a much better VGA card but since you say you do not want to play at the highest settings, you should be fine.

& lastly for HL2, no ones knows...

PS. Welcome to TechSpot. Hope you enjoy your stay.

Hi guys, recently I killed my Dell XPS M1530 by letting some water drops which came from the can of compressed air onto the motherboard. Now, I won't buy another laptop, because I have a netbook, and I only do some word processing when I'm not home.

Now, I'm trying to build a custom gaming and video encoding PC using a budget of 1k US $.

I have never custom built a PC before, so I need some help:

What I want the computer to have:
- 4 GB of RAM DDR3
- A decent video cards (I don't know the prices for desktops)
- Intel Core i7 with 4 - 6 cores.
- Nice 7.2 KRPM 320 GB or more hard drive.
- Motherboard (I just don't know which one to choose...)

What I already have:
- I have a DVD ROM drive from my older desktop, so I won't need a new one.
- Samsung Monitor. 1080p. So no new one will be needed.

And I can't think of anything else... I really need something that gets me out from the netbook. I can't use Firefox, Opera, and Flash/Dreamweaver altogether at the same time.

Thanks in advance for all the help.

A:Help me making a 1,000 US$ gaming machine

I doubt that it's practical to build a Core I7 system for $1000. If you want 6 cores, that's ridiculous: the I7-970 (the cheaper of the two Intel 6 core desktop CPUs) is about $880 (www.newegg.com) by itself.

This article is a little dated (July 2010), but it gives you some idea about budgets:

Build the Best Gaming PC for Any Budget - How To by ExtremeTech

Note that the AMD six core CPUs are much less expensive than the Intel 6 cores, but their performance may be comparable to similarly-priced Intel CPUs.

The Core I5-750 (or 760), with a Socket 1156 motherboard, is a popular choiuce for gamers. The Socket 1156 I7s have hyperthreading, though, so they may be better for video encoding. (It's not something I do, so I can't speak from personal experience.)

hey guys;

i need some help, i am SO lost! i haven't bought a new computer since... uhm... somewhere in the single digits of 2000...
Price Range:
i will not be able to get a new computer for some time after this one, so for this one, i want to get one that is pretty leading-edge on the curve, here. i'm willing to bite the bullet and pony up some serious dough for this one. within reason.

usually i put together a custom-built from AVADirect http://avadirect.com/
i see that newegg also has this option. i'd really like to go with AVA, they have been really good for me in the past, but... if another source is going to have comparable parts and service for less... well.

(side note: what is up with alienware?? i went there and it's all full of dell computers!?)

CPU/MoBo: not picky; whatever is good. good and fast. and lasts. i'm fond of ASUS mobos; i've had those in i think every computer i've ever had.

oh, on special caveat... it needs to have a pci slot for a "RS 232 Serial COM & Printer Parallel LPT port to PCI Express Adapter Card." (like this one: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00Y4AS6KI/) no, i am not joking i have two wacom art pad ii's that use the mouse port, and a lightwave dongle that uses the printer port. i tried getting a usb dongle, but it didn't work.

MEMORY: never my strong suit. uh... how much should i optimally get? :/

VIDEO: needs to be high end. i do 2d and 3d grahics, building 3d models,... Read more

I've been searching the forums here and places on internet.

finding many articals and such on building computer, but the problem is most things you find tell you how to put them together, I can do that.

what I'm looking for are some info articals or lists to explain diff's between cpu's, video cards, motherboards and such.most of the time many manufacturer sites all say theres is the best, that's fine but once you decide on a certain manufacturer how do you decide between there products? by price? say looking at video cards ranging from say $50.00 to $300.00 and I want to get one someplace in the mid. at around $150 if there is one for $180 will you notice the thirty dollar diff? and why?

like I've read in one artical that two video cards are better than one. well I'm not looking for the cheapest good stuff but not looking to spend an arm and a leg eather. like is one $250. video card the same, better, or worse than two $150. cards.

I guess my big question is are there any list out there that are kinda like best to worst, fastest to slowest, and that might explain why or how "this is better than that" things like motherboards, cpu's and such.

found many gaming computer sites that you can buy there setup for so much and found sites that I've picked stuff peace by peace for sometes lots less sometimes lots more than already built systems, but don't know what is better on what systems.

been judging by price more... Read more

I just put a machine together for the first time. Here are the specs
128 Ram
4 GIG hard drive
24X CD
Operating system: Win2000 Professional

I have the Hard drive connected to IDE-1
and the CD to IDE-2, jumper on primary
My question is that I have noticed during POST that it says..
Seach for boot record - Floppy - not found
Search for boot record - CD Rom - not found

Then it starts up, it runs just fine...
I checked in my Setup,
Here is what I have it set to:

Pri Master: Auto
Pri SLave: Auto
Sec Master: CD Rom
Sec Slave: Not installed

In Advanced setup:
Quick boot: Enabled
1st Boot Drive: Floppy
2nd boot drive: IDE-1
3rd boot drive: CD Rom
Try other boot drives: yes

Does everything appear to be setup correct? it seems to run just fine, except for the 2 lines that I see during bootup...just want to make sure I did things right..being a rookiee that is...

A:Qustion regarding messages during POST on my machine

Hi Dan, all that means is that your bios setup is set to check for a floppy disk first, then the cdrom.........quite frankly, I keep my set to the C: drive first.......to shorten boot up time.....when and if you need to boot to the floppy and/or cdrom, just go back in and change the order.

Do you have an IDE 0 to choose from?

I am thinking about making an ultimate gaming machine, and I've seen quite a few versions of what people think belongs in an ultimate gaming machine, and I just wanted to know what people suggest for the following things: Processor, motherboard, and video card (Is the new NVidia going to be the general best card?). Thanks for you thoughts!

A:Suggest hardware for gaming machine?

Read other 12 answers

Good day everyone.

Well I have reached the point with my old machine where I am fed up with it's performance. I am still running a single core 3800+ with a 7900GT for graphics. Needless to say, coupled to a 27 inch monitor running at 1920 resolution, I can't play even old games on medium settings.

I have come up with a budget system right now, all I can afford, and I think it offers a lot of options for the future. However, I have been out of the hardware loop for a good 2 years now. I have spent the last month catching up on information. I am going to explain my specs, and my reasons for them, and hopefully some hardcore hardware gurus can help me confirm I am making the right choices.

CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition 3.2GHZ
RAM: Corsair XMS3 CMX8GX3M2A1600C9 8GB 2X4GB DDR3-1600
CASE: Corsair Obsidian Series 800D
PSU: Corsair Professional Series Gold AX850

Now, the first thing that jumps out is yes, I am thinking of diving right into the 990FX chipset. This way, I am ready to upgrade anytime once the upcoming Bulldozer series is released from AMD. Also, with this motherboard, I can run a SLI Nvidia setup with a AMD CPU, something that hasn't been possible in the past.

The CPU has very good overclocking ability, so I hear, and I see no point in buying a 6 core CPU right now, when the 8 core Bulldozers are just around the corner. This 955 is a steal of a deal ... Read more

A:New gaming machine smart at this time?

Looks fine. You've obviously looked at a build with a degree of futureproofing (as much as there can be) in mind and some solid choices in build quality/warranty/longevity/expandibility.
I own an 800D, and they are a very roomy chassis. The 700D offers a little more for a few less dollars- although you would have to do without the window.

Hey, i have Compaq Presario 7595 PC. I think this has a P4 processor. 512mb Ram, Win XP. Works fine, but I want something that can handle starcraft 2. Anyone know how I could get there, spending as little money as possible?

A:How Can I Turn My Computer into a Gaming Machine?

Your options with a compaq are very limited. Big box systems ie dell, hp, whatever are not really made for upgrading. You can add ram or a larger hd however when you attempt to add a high end video card, you run into multiple problems; cooling, pw supply, etc.

Next a p4 is at least 3 generations old technology; not much there to work with.

Your best option is to save your money and build a modern system. In short, it would cost you way more to attempt to upgrade such old technology. The only items you could use might be the optical drive and keyboard/mouse. You would need to replace the case, pw supply, mb, cpu, ram, video card, and hard drive.

Hi, All! I am about to attempt to swap out the keyboard on my Y40-80. Tonight I did a test-run and man is it tght in there! It looks like I will have to remove the motherboard, fan array, HDD, 1 speaker, heat sink, etc. to get to where the keyboard is located. Furthermore, after reassembly, the function+adjust volume only goes up and the function + increaes brightness no longer works. (Perhaps ths is because I left few screw off the motherboard to make it easy for when I actually attempt to replace the keyboard. )Has anyone on here attemped a keyboard replacement on a Y40-80 ? Thank you!-dr3wski

So, I'm looking to buy a new computer for gaming, as my current computer is terrible. So I found a "deal" for the computer below for $1,000. I know it would be cheaper to make my own computer, but I don't want to go through that and there aren't any computer shops near me that do it. So, here are the specs:

Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit
Intel Core i7-3770 3.4GHz (8MB Cache)(8 Cores)
8GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1600MHz (2 DIMMS)
1TB SATA 3Gb/s (7,200RPM) 32MB Cache

So I was just wondering how future proof this rig will be, and if it can run most current games on high settings.

A:How Future Proof is this Machine for Gaming?

The GPU is pretty lame in that machine.

Other than that, it looks good.

I'm thinking of upgrading my ram , currently running 4x1g PC 6400 DDR2.

My MOBO supports 1200mhz memory , are the gains in perfomance worth it.

The highest rating I found was some OCZ 1150mhz DDR2 but this only come in 1gb sticks, is it better to buy 2gb sticks at a slightly lower speed as i will use 4 sticks.

Thanks Adrian.

I am looking at the nVidia 8300 chipset to build an ultimate gaming machine using SLi tech. Has anyone done this before? I found a motherboard for around $70 and am looking for a cool box. I want to go with liquid cooling systems and plan to shop for the parts I am going to need like a power suppply and video cards. Anyone know where I can get some help? or know of some cool places to shop?
There is a really cool place here in Portland Oregon called "freegeek" I think they have a website too. I buy alot of cheap parts there. neweggcom is okay too.

At this point I don't think it really matters since there isn't any games out there that are programmed to take advantage of a dual core set up. That is supposed to be changing but who knows when that will happen. By that time AMD will most like be on its new socket the M2 and either one of thise chips will be out dated
