My front USB 3 port doesn't read USB 3 device, but reads USB 2 device

Q: My front USB 3 port doesn't read USB 3 device, but reads USB 2 device

I have ASUS P8Z77 ?V motherboard and the front USB 3.0 headers are not working when I plug in a USB 3.0 device. When I plugged in my Kingston USB 3.0 Flash Drive into the front USB 3.0 header it didn't work. As in, when I tried to move a file into the flash drive, the drive disappears and it makes that USB unplugged sound. But if I connect it to any back USB 3.0 ports, it works fine.

But, if I plug in my Scandisk USB 2.0 Flash drive into the front USB 3.0 ports, it works without any errors.

This only happens with USB 3.0 devices and it has to be connected to front USB 3.0 ports.
I have installed all the latest drivers and updated my BIOS to the latest one. I have checked if USB 3.0 is enabled in BIOS.

I asked to my friend to help me. He has AMD rig with ASUS M5a99X EVO motherboard, which has a front USB 3.0 header. We installed all AMD drivers for his rig updated everything, the front USB 3.0 ports worked fine. We manage to transfer all the files at full-speed on to the Kingston 3.0 flash drive without any errors, so I know it?s not my PC case?s USB 3.0 cable at fault.

Any help. Please note the front USB 3.0 ports work if I plug in a USB 2.0 device.

Preferred Solution: My front USB 3 port doesn't read USB 3 device, but reads USB 2 device

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: My front USB 3 port doesn't read USB 3 device, but reads USB 2 device

Hi dino1989,

I checked the motherboard manual and it talks about only 2 USB 3.0 ports; appears that it offers 2 USB 3.0 port connectors at the back panel:

Please take a glance at the motherboard layout. Connectors highlighted (11) are 10-1 pin USB56, USB78 & USB910. These connectors are used for USB 2.0 ports (9 ports) at the rear panel. If the 2 USB ports in front are also connected to there, they may comply with USB 2.0 specification and would support upto 480 Mbps connection speed. (Tried but could not find anything in the manual that gives a clue about the source of the USB ports in the front).
However, you may go to 'Onboard Devices Configuration' and try setting 'USB 3.0 Controller' as [Enabled] in 'BIOS' to see if that gets the USB 3.0 ports functional in the front panel. This 'Enables / Disables' the USB 3.0 controller.

To access 'motherboard BIOS', you may want to refer to this manual: http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/...5A78L-USB3.pdf

Hope this helps. Do reply with the findings.

I am running a Vista Ultimate PC with Intel Core 2 Duo 1.86Ghz Processors and GenuineIntel 946GZIS. I purchased the PC in march this year.

My DVD RW drive is a Sony DVD RW AW-G170A ATA Device. The problem that I am facing is:

Initially for the first few months, I did not face any problem. However I never burned a DVD so cant be sure but there never was a problem burning CDs.

Then, slowly, some DVDs wud not be read at my system. I assumed it is due to the fact that DVDs are burned in different formats, different write speeds, etc and teh remight be some incompatibility. However, soon all DVDs wud not be read by my system. Instead it identifies every DVD as a blank DVD. And when I try burning a blank DVD, no mater by what tool - i tried InfraRecorder, Nero 7, Nero 8, Windows DVD Burner, i would get a "Power caliberation Error"...

Yet, at least CDs were read.

However, for the last 2 days 9 out of 10 times, when I insert a CD Vista asks me to "Insert a Disc into the Drive", it is only the 10% of times when it reads the CD. Even this is a generous estimate.

Kindly help me. What is the problem? What is the Cause? and What is the solution?
I had a strong w32.Sodad-A (this is wht i remember) infection in the month of october. I cud nt find any reference of this virus affecting Optical Drive performance on the net, but it is only after i removed this infection that i observe these issues.

A:Sony DVD RW AW-G170A ATA Device: Seldom Reads CDs, Never Reads DVDs, Never Burns Any

I have the exact same problem for the same device - only started last wednesday and very annoying. I have tried everything to get it sorted. Will only read about 25% of disks and seems to be randomly affecting things. I did a fresh install of windows vista but the problem still exists, so i'm assuming it may be a hardware problem. Mesh Computers are investigating the problem and due to call me on Monday so if I get an answer i'll post an update here.

I recently put together a new computer, and in the process of of installing the USB 3.0 connector from the front of my GX500 case, I either bent numerous pins on the motherboard USB 3.0 header or the motherboard shipped that way and I inadvertently made matters worse. Anyway, that header on the motherboard is without a doubt unusable.
Since I don't really need the USB 3.0 functionality, I bought a USB 3.0 -> 2.0 adapter cable, connected one end to the connector on the front of the case and the other end into the USB 2.0/1.1 header on the motherboard. Unfortunately, when Windows 7 boots and I plug a device into the front ports of the case, Windows detects the front USB ports as "Unknown Device" within Device Manager yet says the driver is successfully installed. I've already downloaded the most current Intel chipset drivers for my motherboard, deleted and reinstalled all USB drivers, and all rear USB connections are working perfectly fine - it's just the two front ports that are connected from the case to the USB 2.0/1.1 ports via the adapter cable.  I've tried both USB 2.0/1.1 headers on the motherboard, and I've tried plugging in several devices to the front USB ports, and this problem still persists.
I've ensured the connection inside the case is solid, yet I cannot get Windows to recognize the front USB ports.  However, I have confirmed that power is being sent to the front ports because it charges my phone when I connect it to the front USB ports via m... Read more

As the title says, top right USB port on my T470 doesn't work after BIOS v1.42 update when device is plugged in on boot.  Non of devices power up when plugged into that port. Naturally there's nothing in dmesg. This is not OS-dependent since devices don't power up in BIOS screen as well. The other 2 ports still work as expected. Restarting doesn't help. After some cold boots the ports starts working again. This never happened with previous BIOS versions.

ok my front usb port wont read,it has 2 ports and both wont work..

ok here's the situation
1. i just bought asrock h61m/u3s3 and installed it in my old zyrex casing and it has 2 front usb port, then i installed the motherboard driver, the front usb port works fine
2. i bought new casing, azza toledo and put the motherboard there, but when i tried to use the front usb it wont read the flashdisk inserted, i check in device manager but nothing's showing up saying there's something wrong with the usb ports, it didnt even show/read that there're extra usb port plugged in
3. i plug in the old case usb port to the motherboard, and it works fine

so is the port broken?or there's something wrong with the driver that i needed to reinstall?

A:front USB port won't read

If you have confirmed that the USB Header on the motherboard is working as you did by plugging the old USB Port into it, and you are sure you have the front ports on the new case properly connected to the same USB Header, then I would say that the New Case USB Port is most likely the culprit.

But a friend living hundreds of miles away uses XP and ran an "unasked for" Pop-Up utility that said he had computer problems because of malware or spyware some unnamed entity had installed on his computer. Unfortunately he doesn't remember the name of the "so called spyware detector/remover", but he fell for the "Warning" and ran the program to "check" his system.

Of course, as most those unrequested detect/remover programs do...it found many "so called serious" problems. But would Not "fix/clean them" unless he payed for the program.

From THAT point on, his CD-ROM wouldn't work(which it had dependably always before)....the Device Manager that it "is there" and what make/model it is....and also says that it is enabled and working properly(but it isn't working, as before). And the Icon disappeared from from the My Computer folder. I guess that program somehow did something to it, in order to force people to pay for the program to "fix it" and othe so-called problems!

Has anybody ever heard of this?
Can you help me get his CD-ROM accessable and working dependably as before? Please??

I was deleting files on my computer yesterday for some spring cleaning and I may have accidentally deleted a program which controls my audio playback and recording. when I right click on the icon in the lower right corner of my home screen, It shows no disabled devices or disconnected devices are available. Oh, and for reference, I was only deleting from my documents files. I have already emptied my trash. I also had sound for the following four or five hours, but then the sound would go off after five or ten minutes of play. A few hours later, the sound completely stopped and that was when the message appeared on my sound icon. Thanks for any help.

I upgraded to Windows 10 a while back. Every time I open the computer I get a pop-up notification telling me the USB device is unrecognized. I have no USB devices in any of my 3 USB ports.
I sent my computer in twice. No help. They just uninstalled everything and reinstalled everything and told me it should be fixed. It is not. I then went about updating every driver in my Device Manager. I uninstalled the Unknown USB Device and then updated
other drivers. Certain drivers (such as PCI Express Root Port #3 - 9C14) when updating would also reinstall the Unknown USB Device, which I would then uninstall and keep working down the list. At the end of updating EVERYTHING I scanned for hardware changes
and "found" the Unknown USB Device.
From what I can tell, and I know very little about this stuff, my computer can't name one of my USB ports. Since it can't figure out what it's called it can't download the proper driver for it. Since it can't download the proper driver it can't work properly.
The practical result from this is that one of my three USB ports does nothing when I put in any USB item (connect my android phone, thumb drive, presentation clicker, etc).
I've looked on tons of forums. My current thought is that if I can tell my computer what the deice is or download the right driver and tell my computer to use that driver for this device it should solve my issue. But I don't know how to know what the name
of the USB port should be (I imagine it woul... Read more

After 2 days of looking for a possible solution I decice to re-install win 7 64 bits SP1 and all the drivers, then I re-install winxp mode with virtual pc.  I still have the same problem.
I do not know if this helps but the USB controller installed on the host machine, seems to be ver 3.0

Neither of the USB port devices (the 4 x USB below, or the multi-port device above) will power up a 2.5" USB drive enclosure. Also, some SELF-powered external drives, when plugged into the 2 devices, give read-write errors.

Memory cards, mouse antennas, and even an HP printer will communicate properly through the ports.

Is there a BIOS setting maybe for the headers on the mobo, that will affect this?

A:Front Panel USB ports won't power up USB 2.5" device...

No. Typically a sign of low quality cabling/connectors used for the case ports. You can get a port bay to install into an available 3.5" or 5.25" bay.

I built a custom desktop a couple of months ago. I have a Gigabyte Z77X-DH3 mobo inside an Antec Nine Hundred case.

Gigabyte Z77X-DH3 Manual

Nine Hundred Manual

I'm not very sharp when it comes to computer audio, but here's what I'm looking at (I think...). The mobo has integrated audio which uses the VIA VT2021 audio codec. The case also has headphone/mic inputs on the front panel. This is connected to the mobo using the provided High Definition Audio cable (as opposed to AC97). I have speakers connected to the integrated audio, and a headset connected to the front panel headphone/mic ports.

In windows, I am using the VIA HD Audio Deck software. In the advanced options menu, I have the headphones set on the "Independent Headphone" option, which makes the headphones show up as it's own device in the windows playback device menu (which is what I want), instead of showing it as the speakers. The problem is, when I make the headphones the active device, they don't play any sound. The green equalizer bars next to the device in the windows menu show the device is playing, but no sound comes from the headphones themselves. If I switch the setting in the VIA software to "Redirected Headphone", using the same port, it works fine (but it shows up as the same device as the speakers).

In the Device Manager, under "Sounds, video and game controllers", I have 3 devices listed: AMD High Definition Audio Device
High Definition Audio Device
VIA ... Read more

A:VIA HD Audio Deck - Front panel headphone device not producing sound

First get rid of the High Definition Audio Device. That was probably a default device that Windows installed, before you installed either the AMD video drivers or the VIA sound drivers. Whether that is interferring with what you want to do? (or if what you want to do can be done).

I just built a new PC with a gigabyte Z77X UD5H motherboard and it has RealTek audio on it.

In the RealTek control panel, I can set the front panel headset jack to either mute the speakers (normal) or to not mute the speakers so that both the speakers and headset work.

But, if you are trying to get two different default audio playback devices at the same time, you can't do that. Windows limits you to only one default audio playback device.

I just bought a new 4-port USB hub after my old one had stopped working for some reason, and I can't plug in more than 1 device at a time. My old one also had 4 ports and I could use my 2GB USB drive and my wireless mouse at the same time without any problems.

With my new hub, If I have my mouse plugged in and then plug in my USB drive, my mouse stops working (as if I have pulled the receiver out - the 'safely remove hardware icon disappears) and my USB doesn't even connect. Then If I remove either one, the other one which is still plugged in will connect again.

I've also had the same problem if I try any combination with my external hard drive. My external HD has its own power source and has the same problem. I can't say though, whether my old hub worked with either my mouse or USB stick, because I didn't have an external back then.

And what I don't understand is, even when I run this program without the hub plugged in, it'll show 5 listings for 'USB Root Hub'. Now my laptop has 4 usb ports and an integrated webcam, and the options for the 5th listing says my camera's name along with 500 mA, even though I'm not even using it. I can click retry, which doesnt work, or cancel which exits (obviously)
then it says

"Error -30: Preparing to remove..."

(The 30 is the windows code for cannot read from the specified deivce)

I know for a fact the disk worked because I've installed it before I reformatted and the cd drive also works since it can install other programs.
I can explore the cd and all that but it's the installation part which stops.

I have 2 hard drives, a 40 and an 80. the 80 is the master and both are connected to IDE1. I have a cd/r and a normal cd drive, with the normal cd as master and both connected to IDE2. The installation problem is the same when i put it in either drive.

My motherboard is the ASRock Wolfdale1333-D667. I have a Gigabyte X1650 PCI-E, Creative SB Live PCI and Hauppauage WINTV FM cards attached to it. My HDD is a Seagate 160GB, with a single 2GB RAM stick and the Intel Dual Core E2160 CPU. I have a DVD-RW drive and two fans mounted inside the case (one at the bottom front to suck in air, one at the rear blowing out). All these are powered by a 420W PSU.

My problem is that it cannot seem to support more than one USB device for long. The Mobo has a total of eight USB ports (6 at the rear, two at the front panel; two at the back have been mentioned in the manual that they won't work if the front ones are used). I connect to the Internet using a USB wireless modem, and if I wish to remain connected to the Internet, I must not plug in any other USB device into any of the remaining free ports. If I do, both items will either continuously connect and reconnect itself (the notification bubbles pop up incessantly) with the result I cannot use either, or both will disconnect once, reconnect and Windows makes noise about the device not being recognised or has malfunctioned. Sometimes it will totally disconnect one device and Windows makes noise about how the other device can perform faster. At first I thought it may have to do with the modem drawing too much current (it feels hot to the touch), but same thing happens when I plug in two USB flash drives. When I connect my HP D2460 USB printer, it's even worse. Even with that ... Read more

Upon booting his PC my brother is getting the error message as attached. The machine is running fine, however the pop up on the 2nd attachment appears sporadically. Machine is less than 6 months old. No new hardware or software (to my knowledge).

Are we looking at imminent hard drive failure or nothing to be 'too' concerned about?

I have an HP Pavillion with an AMD CPU & Windows vista installed. I installed the SW for a Belkin F5U220 (5 port PCI Hi-Speed 2.0 USB card) and then the actual card and then restarted the computer. According to Belkin instructions windows should recognize the card and drivers.

Vista finds the card, but considers it an 'unknown' device. I let Vista attempt to find the drivers but it doesn't. I even tried the option of inserting the driver disk, but Vista could not find the drivers.

The Belkin site does not even recognize the F5U220 as a legitimate device, so I can not get drivers from them.

I give up - this is the worst version of windows I have ever used and I started with Windows 3.1. I'm beginning to hate microsoft, but don't have the knowledge or interest in learning a new operating system - like Open-BSD or Linix.http://www.techsupportforum.com/imag...es/1-upset.gif

Where can I get the appropriate driver, I have work to do ????

A:Unknown device - Belkin 5 port USB 2.0

After a little researching, looks like its not compatible with vista.

Last night, when I went to check my e-mail, my computer was on and running but there was a window with a large (UGLY!) Red X saying that my hard disk needs to be repaired or replaced and advising me to back up files immediately. I have an automatic backup in place which backs up files and a "disk image" to a Segate External Hard Drive.

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium on a Gateway Desktop with Intel Core i-7 processor.

After backing up a few files manually, I set the system to run a Chkdsk and rebooted. The Chkdsk had passed the first 3 of 5 levels, but was taking a long time with level 4 so I went to bed. Upon waking this morning, the Big Red X window was there again, but luckily my system did boot and I am still able to use it, but probably not for long.

1. If I have to get a new hard drive, is the image backup on the EHD what I would need to restore my fixed or new hard drive? If not, do I try to get an "image" file on a DVD and use that?

2. What, if anything, should I try next? Is there something, e.g. Chkdsk, which would likely repair the problem?

3. There was also something about a SMART advisory, but I don't know what that means.

I'm not even sure what else I should be asking/doing at this point. I would appreciate any/all advice and suggestions.

None of the other devices have any of these listed. Obviously I see "Lime", and I know "ooVoo" is a video chat app. What does any or all of this mean? Any concerns?
