freezing during online games

Q: freezing during online games

Hello! I'm a newbie to this site so bear with me. While trying to play games on MSN or pogo or the java website, my comp will suddenly freeze up. My mouse cursor won't move and I can't even Ctrl-Alt-Del or Esc. All I can do is manually power off the computer. Sometimes it just shuts itsself down. It seems to happen more when there is a lot of activity on the screen. This is a recent problem. The games used to run just fine. Any ideas?

I'm running IE 6 on Win98

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello,

Occassionally, like once every three days, whenever I try to play an online video like from Youtube or essentially any video that is from the internet, it will freeze and stop playing after about 2-3 seconds of play. I've let the video load all the way through and still no luck. This also happens with online games sometimes. After about 5 seconds of loading up, on any browser, Mozilla or IE, it will freeze, just as the videos do. Strangely, though, after a reboot the videos and games work again. I wouldn't be complaining if this only happened once, maybe twice, but like I said, it happens occassionally. I'm pretty sure I have all the updated Shockwave and Flash player downloads, but maybe not. Any ideas on what might be the problem? Thanks very much.

Hi. Thank you for your time and expertise
For a while now I've had mostly BSOD 0x00000124 appearing on my screen when watching online videos(except YouTube) or whenever I played PC games on maximum video settings.
I decided to re-install Windows, assuming that software is the problem. Though after that not only did the BSOD stay, but also my computer started freezing randomly(on start-up, while installing updates, browsing the internet).
Also I installed Zorin OS 6. After a few minutes of browsing the internet(using Chrome) it also froze.
I tried running MemTest86+(using a CD) but after about 10 min. the computer screen shuts down on its own.
What should I do?

Hello everyone ive just registered, and maybe should have gone to the intro page to start...but impatience from my son is more persuasive. He is running an AMD athlon 3000 processor with a ATI 9800 pro video card, the operating system is XP. Now the problem seems to be that although he has an internet connection, tried and tested and running at approx 1mb, when he attempts to connect to the net with an online game( and several have been tried) his connection goes down. This only occurs with online games, he is able to run all other online applications with no problems. This is a recent development as everything worked perfectly, now, he assures me nothing has been done to cause this. I, and several people I have spoken to have no clues whatsoever. Can anyone offer us a ray of light...Thank u all kindly. X

A:Online Games

What do you mean by "goes down"? Can he connect to, and enter the game, and then at some time the connexion is dropped? At what point does something happen? It would also help, I think, if you mentioned one of the games with which you are having problems.
Thanks,

i just bought a new labtop, it isnt exactly a gaming rig but im sure it can handle a fun online FPS game.

the specs are attached..
any good games in mind that can work well with these specs.

these two games instantly came to mind, CoD2 and BF2
can my labtop handle it?

A:online FPS games

the only thing that looks like it would be limiting is your processor...and even that's pretty good. Steam games? (HL2, CS:S, DOD:S)...
bf2: you might need to turn down some of the graphics to get smooth play but shouldnt be too much of a problem and i'm not sure about CoD2.
A good rule of thumb (at least that i use if you want smooth, nice graphics) is treat the "recommended" system specs for a game as the minimum.
hope that helps

1. This is a "Printers" forum, you probably want to ask the question in one of the computer forums. 2.  That said, I would suspect the issue is related to your firewall settings. When you ask the question in the computer forum be sure to give details such as: How are you connected to the internet? What firewall are you using?  (WIndows Defender, or an external firecall in your router?)What games are you having trouble with? What error mesages are you seeing? Regards,Bob Headrick, MS MVP Printing/Imaging

It has been 5 days since this problem started. The computer freezes, sort of lags for about 2-3 seconds only while I'm online. It happens about every 15 seconds, but sometimes gets random. Offline there is no problem. I'm on a wireless network (Netgear), none of the other computers have this problem. While it freezes I can still move the mouse and click things but nothing loads for the 2-3 seconds. I'm getting normal temperatures on the PC so I don't believe it's overheating.

I did a system restore and it didn't fix the problem. I have also ran several antivirus scans with AVG Pro 7 and PC-Cillin 2005. I've also done scans for worms such as bagle. I've ran Spybot/AdAware/MS Antispyware several times, no pick ups. Any ideas?

My computer has been freezing randomly for the past couple of days. I have run spybot, microsoft anti-spyware, ad-aware, and norton. Found a bunch of spyware that was successfully removed. No viruses detected at all. Had a friend who does tech support remove a bunch of startup items on my computer too. I usually have my computer connected to the Internet (cable modem), however, just to see what would happen i disconnected it during the day yesterday and it hadn't frozen by the time i got home. It appears that if i'm disconnected from the Internet my computer has no problems, however when connected sometimes it'll freeze after 5 min, sometimes after a few hours. When it freezes i loose control of everything: no mouse movement, caps lock key light won't turn on etc... have to press the reset button each time. Then it starts up and works fine. The computer i'm using is a Toshiba Satellite A-70 notebook. OS is Windows XP. Up until a couple days ago i had no problems with it at all.

I would suspect that the ports needed for that game are being blocked by the college network. You will need to find out which ports it needs to use and then speak to the college IT people and ask if those ports are blocked.

A question for you Mozilla FireFox users..........hope you can help me.......

Hi, I hope someone can help me with this dilemma. I just downloaded and started using Mozilla FireFox and love it, except for one thing, it doesn't let us play the games we like to play online, like chess, pool and dominoes. I can play all of the other games on the same site with FireFox, but not those mentioned. On the other hand when I use Windows Explorer I don't have this problem.

I have downloaded Sun Java, Flashplayer 7 and Shockwave, but still the games don't load. I get as far as choosing a table, but that is it.

Am I missing something here? Is there something else I should download?

Thank you!!

Hello yalla_3ad

I guess this probably should be in the networks section? Someone will move it, if it should be.

My thoughts would be to try updating some of your drivers, such as your graphics card. That said, if you have no other problems with any other game and nothing else has changed, no new software, no microwave next to your router (not moved the router?), then maybe it is the servers you are playing on? It could be a problem their end? More players on the server, etc? Try asking other players there.

Also, maybe that game has some settings you can change to help with network issues.

Hey, I browsed briefly through the other threads so if this was already answered forgive me

Starcraft is my game of choice, and recently I have just got a new computer with wireless internet. However, for the last 3-4 years there has been an ongoing debate within my family on who is the better Starcraft player.

Today I was going to purchase another copy of Starcraft to install on my computer. There is a wireless network through my house. Before I made my purchase I wanted to check if I would be able to play with/agaisnt my brothers using two different computers hooked up to the same internet connection.

Thanks in advance.

A:Can same IP play games together online?

You will be able to play over the network. When you go into multiplayer go in to the tcp/ip one I think(someone correct me if I am wrong) and you will be able to play as if you were hard wired together. Me and my brother play games against each other over our wireless all the time. Also, Starcraft doesn't require different cd keys if you are playing over a LAN so you should be able to just burn the copy you have and use the same cd key.

A:Trouble with online games

Do you know what ports have to be open for the games you are wanting to play?

If you use different games and/or do not know exactly which ports are being used, you should most likely enable the UPnP services on your router.

You also have the auto2way application setup in your router. The online manual does not provide very good information. I am not sure if you ACTIVATE an item if you have further configuration options or not.

UPnP, auto2way, and even the possibility of putting the gaming device or computer in the DMZ are possible ways of getting your games to work. However, they also make your system vulnerable too. Especially putting it in the DMZ.

Here is an extraction of the information on auto2way:

Auto 2-Way Application
This section can let a user open certain service ports for software. Because there is much internet software need 2-way access right and they open many TCP/UDP ports simultaneously such as online game or audio/video conference. They always connect to an outside server with a fixed destination port. Then the server would communicate with the application in LAN by using a predefined incoming port or a specific range of incoming ports. If a user has trouble playing certain games and the games require a port to be opened, then Auto 2-Way Application is the place to enable ports for it.
Hope this helps a little.

Hello.

I am in dire need of your help.

Every time I play an online game on PS2 or PC it will freeze for about a second then play smoothly and repeat this like every 20 seconds.

Then I will eventually get disconnected. It's very annoying.

This has happened to me on Smackdown vs RAW, Socom 3, Resident Evil Outbreak 2, Project Shadowblind, and Final Fantasy XI (all Playstation 2
games).

And on online PC games. It does the **exact** same thing.

So, I know that my PC is not causing this but rather the modem / settings.

But I never get disconnected while surfing the web.

What could be the cause of this?

I've got a 1.5 MB connection and I average about 70 KB/s and 100+ on fast servers.

My upload rate is 128 kb/s and I average about 12 KB/s uploads.

I live about 15 miles from the city where my ISP is.

And I'm using a Netopia Cayman 3346 Router / Modem.

Please help.
