freezing during online games

Q: freezing during online games

Hello! I'm a newbie to this site so bear with me. While trying to play games on MSN or pogo or the java website, my comp will suddenly freeze up. My mouse cursor won't move and I can't even Ctrl-Alt-Del or Esc. All I can do is manually power off the computer. Sometimes it just shuts itsself down. It seems to happen more when there is a lot of activity on the screen. This is a recent problem. The games used to run just fine. Any ideas?

I'm running IE 6 on Win98

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello,

Occassionally, like once every three days, whenever I try to play an online video like from Youtube or essentially any video that is from the internet, it will freeze and stop playing after about 2-3 seconds of play. I've let the video load all the way through and still no luck. This also happens with online games sometimes. After about 5 seconds of loading up, on any browser, Mozilla or IE, it will freeze, just as the videos do. Strangely, though, after a reboot the videos and games work again. I wouldn't be complaining if this only happened once, maybe twice, but like I said, it happens occassionally. I'm pretty sure I have all the updated Shockwave and Flash player downloads, but maybe not. Any ideas on what might be the problem? Thanks very much.

Hi. Thank you for your time and expertise
For a while now I've had mostly BSOD 0x00000124 appearing on my screen when watching online videos(except YouTube) or whenever I played PC games on maximum video settings.
I decided to re-install Windows, assuming that software is the problem. Though after that not only did the BSOD stay, but also my computer started freezing randomly(on start-up, while installing updates, browsing the internet).
Also I installed Zorin OS 6. After a few minutes of browsing the internet(using Chrome) it also froze.
I tried running MemTest86+(using a CD) but after about 10 min. the computer screen shuts down on its own.
What should I do?

Hello everyone ive just registered, and maybe should have gone to the intro page to start...but impatience from my son is more persuasive. He is running an AMD athlon 3000 processor with a ATI 9800 pro video card, the operating system is XP. Now the problem seems to be that although he has an internet connection, tried and tested and running at approx 1mb, when he attempts to connect to the net with an online game( and several have been tried) his connection goes down. This only occurs with online games, he is able to run all other online applications with no problems. This is a recent development as everything worked perfectly, now, he assures me nothing has been done to cause this. I, and several people I have spoken to have no clues whatsoever. Can anyone offer us a ray of light...Thank u all kindly. X

A:Online Games

What do you mean by "goes down"? Can he connect to, and enter the game, and then at some time the connexion is dropped? At what point does something happen? It would also help, I think, if you mentioned one of the games with which you are having problems.
Thanks,
John

i just bought a new labtop, it isnt exactly a gaming rig but im sure it can handle a fun online FPS game.

the specs are attached..
any good games in mind that can work well with these specs.

these two games instantly came to mind, CoD2 and BF2
can my labtop handle it?

A:online FPS games

the only thing that looks like it would be limiting is your processor...and even that's pretty good. Steam games? (HL2, CS:S, DOD:S)...
bf2: you might need to turn down some of the graphics to get smooth play but shouldnt be too much of a problem and i'm not sure about CoD2.
A good rule of thumb (at least that i use if you want smooth, nice graphics) is treat the "recommended" system specs for a game as the minimum.
hope that helps

1. This is a "Printers" forum, you probably want to ask the question in one of the computer forums. 2.  That said, I would suspect the issue is related to your firewall settings. When you ask the question in the computer forum be sure to give details such as: How are you connected to the internet? What firewall are you using?  (WIndows Defender, or an external firecall in your router?)What games are you having trouble with? What error mesages are you seeing? Regards,Bob Headrick, MS MVP Printing/Imaging

I am not sure how many here play games online, not games such as Diablo 2 or MMo's but online games such as yahoo games or Pogo.com. well my gf wants me to play pool on pogo.com with her but there is an issue, when i enter the game room a notice comes up saying my pop-up blocker is is causing the game window not to come up, and they tell you to hold down either CTRL, Alt, or Shift when entering the game. well doesn't work for me no matter how many time i hold down the damn thing. I tried bother FireFox and IE and i use IE more.. Now under privacy the pop-up blocker is not checked at all. and i even have pogo.com allowed for sites. but nothing changes. now I use AVG for virus protection and my Firewall is ZoneAlarm basic(the free one). Are you behind a router? if so, the router firewall might be on and it is preventing you from opening the necessary ports needed for online gaming.

It has been 5 days since this problem started. The computer freezes, sort of lags for about 2-3 seconds only while I'm online. It happens about every 15 seconds, but sometimes gets random. Offline there is no problem. I'm on a wireless network (Netgear), none of the other computers have this problem. While it freezes I can still move the mouse and click things but nothing loads for the 2-3 seconds. I'm getting normal temperatures on the PC so I don't believe it's overheating.

I did a system restore and it didn't fix the problem. I have also ran several antivirus scans with AVG Pro 7 and PC-Cillin 2005. I've also done scans for worms such as bagle. I've ran Spybot/AdAware/MS Antispyware several times, no pick ups. Any ideas?

My computer has been freezing randomly for the past couple of days. I have run spybot, microsoft anti-spyware, ad-aware, and norton. Found a bunch of spyware that was successfully removed. No viruses detected at all. Had a friend who does tech support remove a bunch of startup items on my computer too. I usually have my computer connected to the Internet (cable modem), however, just to see what would happen i disconnected it during the day yesterday and it hadn't frozen by the time i got home. It appears that if i'm disconnected from the Internet my computer has no problems, however when connected sometimes it'll freeze after 5 min, sometimes after a few hours. When it freezes i loose control of everything: no mouse movement, caps lock key light won't turn on etc... have to press the reset button each time. Then it starts up and works fine. The computer i'm using is a Toshiba Satellite A-70 notebook. OS is Windows XP. Up until a couple days ago i had no problems with it at all.

Yesterday, a technician from TW came to fix a problem I was having with my modem signal. He checked memory on my computer and said that I needed to make space in order for it to run more smoothly. ( I only had 12% available space) He went to add/remove and showed me some what I could remove. Two of these programs were J2SE runtime environment upate 3 and update 6. I removed those programs along with a couple of games that had been downloaded. He also told me to remove system restore checkpoints in order to make more space. Now when I go to yahoo games or pogo, the browser will automatically close out when I get to the page to load the games. Is this because of the J2SE removal?? They both are still showing on my add/ remove programs although I removed them. TIA for your help with this problem.

welcome

looks like he messed something up there

you could try and do a system restore out of your accessories

but it looks as if you need additional resources for your computer, maybe an upgrade is in order.

There are several ways to find what the problem is. The best is to go into event viewer (type eventvwr in search). Event viewer (local) and look for the critical errors listed in the last day, week, etc. Then go to the windows log>application tab. Finally the windows Logs>system tabs.

You want to look for critical errors (they have red in the left column ).

When you find them you want to look for critical errors that say app hang, app crash, or anything that relates to the problem.

When you find them please note the event ID, and the source codes and tell us what they are.

Problem is I know how fast I move around and play a game depends
somewhat on my ping, how do I determine this. I've looked on google
for some utility to help me figure this out but I can't even figure out
how to get the information they reguire to determine this.

Please help, I really wanted to start playing Far Cry online but don't know
who I should be playing with, low pings or high number pings. I know ping has something to do with how fast a packet goes and returns to my computer, and there it is, can someone help me figure these things out, administrator or anyone?

A:Pc Games Crashing When Online

try the game with the side off and a floor fan blowing in to eliminate heat as the cause. and of course, clean out the case while it is open, and also post what the power supply specs say on the side of the supply.

Hi I'm new here, bad at introductions, so I will get right to the point. I play many online multi player games, including World of Warcraft and Guild Wars, but have recently came up with an issue. My internet has always had small abnormalities, which I have always ignored, e.g when I turn my PC on I have to wait around a minute to get an internet connection, although I am directly connected to the modem, or the fact that it informs me that I am connected at a speed of 100.0 Mbps...which I'm not. However things got a bit worse when I installed the expansion to WoW, I seemed to lose the ability to connect to any online game or any of their servers (i.e WoW repair or news servers), with the sole exception of Guild Wars. I get no error report, they just inform me that I cannot connect. I made sure my router and firewall have all the correct ports open, yet this doesn't seem to resolve the problem. The other computers in my network do seem to be able to connect to the online games, which leaves me a little stumped. So if you read all of that thank you, if you feel like helping thanks even more.

Any help appreciated,
Thanks, Friction.

Hi,

I play alot of fps games. I was thinking of using my phone to connect to the internet on my laptop when im on the move. But my data plan is only 500mb. How much bandwidth do games like Call of Duty and Team Fortress 2 use typically. I'm talking just unmodded vanilla servers. Will the 500mb be sufficient to play games on the odd occasion? Please note I rarely if ever use any of it on my phone.
