Preferred Solution: Ethernet doesn't work but router work.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have Netcomm NB5 and tried connecting via USB, but Windows did not detect it. I have Windows XP MCE 05 and I tried closing down computer and reconnecting and restarting, connecting to a different USB port, but to no avail.

I tried using ethernet, but it says it has "Limited or No Connectivity" and I tried going into the configuration window, but it cannot detect and the installation CD setup cannot detect the modem.

All cords are connected, including phones and power socket.

Please help.

Hi. I removed the Ethernet cord on my computer while it was still on( I have Vista) and i plugged it back in a while ago, and it didn't sense any Internet connection. The wireless on the laptops and the Ethernet on my other desktop is working fine, but just one computer isn't connected to the Internet. My friend who fixes computers had me open up command prompt and"ping" stuff, and it said that the connection was fine, but my browser and Songbird can't open any web pages. Ever since the Internet has been off on the computer, it's been freezing up like crazy.
Do you think i have a virus? Or is it the Ethernet port that's damaged? Help!

What the title says. I bought a TP-Link WDR4300 and installed it, and everything works perfectly on every device except for my laptop (Windows 8.1 Lenovo G480, running Windows Defender as AV). When connecting wirelessly, I get access to the router, but it shows "limited", and it doesn't even let me get into the setup page ( and when I ping it, every packet is lost. Ethernet, meanwhile, works perfectly. I'd appreciate any suggestions on how to fix it.

I'd like to attach the ipconfig outputs but my command prompt is in spanish and some of the characters are missing in the .txt file, too. I don't know how to get the file in english.

@jobeard I saw one thread you solved in which you said to mention you so you could help. I'd really appreciate it. Thanks beforehand for any and all suggestions.

A:WiFi doesn't work, Ethernet does

Hi, You will always have to use the ethernet (Cat 5) cable to get into your router's software, at, all routers are set up like that for security reasons.
It's done that way so that no one can change your settings, passwords etc using a wireless connection, you must use the Cat 5 cable to make setup & security changes.
Did you get any setup software with the TP Link router?
If you get good internet access using Windows 8.1 using the ethernet cable, it
might point to possible wireless driver issues.
It might be worth downloading the latest driver for your WDR4300 from the TP-link website;

My wifi recently stopped working on my laptop and I'm not sure why. The internet only works if it's connected to an Ethernet cable. What can I do to fix this?

I recently restored my laptop to it's original factory system and that's when the wifi stopped working completely. Also, it's not a home problem because the wifi doesn't work anywhere.

Go to Control Panel - Device Manager.

Expand the Network Adapters heading.

What are the exact names listed in that heading?

Are there any entries in the Device Manager that have a yellow ? or yellow ! or red X next to them.

If there is, advise what their exact names are.

I recently had some problems with my on board ethernet where it was locking up my entire system. This was eventually pinned down and I put an SMC PCI Ethernet 10/100 Card into my machine which fixed the problem.

However I've had a different problem ever since. Whenever I boot (or reboot) my computer, the Ethernet connection doesn't work for a good one to two minutes after start up. No amount of attempting to disable/re-enable the connection, or using that Windows Repair My connection thing will fix this and I just have to wait. Windows says it is connected but it doesn't work and then after a mintue or so it says the connection is disconncted, then it reconnects within a second or two and then will it work.

After this the connection is perfectly stable until the next time I start Windows. Also I don't have this problem on my brother's computer which connects to the same 4-port router.

Are there any Windows / software settings I can try changing before I try swapping it out for another Ethernet card?

Most of this probably isn't relevant but I'll list it all anyway...

ipconfig /all
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post the results in a reply here.
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and paste here.

We would like to see the results from an ipconfig /all - post back the results in a reply here.

This should also work for windows 8
Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt box
(A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

ipconfig /all > network.txt & network.txt

It will export the results into notepad and then automatically open the notepad and display on your screen.

Now all you need to do is copy and paste those results into a reply here

I've been having some problems with my ethernet for the past few days. The computers hooked up to wireless routers are fine, so it's not a problem within the computer. However, when I hook up an ethernet cable to the modem, there's a "limited to no connectivity" message on my computer, and when i click to repair it mentions something about the IP adress. My Xbox 360, which is also dependent with the ethernet cable, says basically the same thing when i run tests on that. If anyone can help, it would be appreciated.

I'm currently living in a dorm room that has two Ethernet ports on each wall, two for myself and two for my roommate. I am trying to get my pc and xbox both hooked up because the wifi here is really spotty but one of the two ports, on both walls, doesn't work. It's my understanding that an Ethernet cable wouldn't fit into a phone jack so I'm assuming it is an Ethernet hookup because the cable fits into both ports and one does give me internet access just fine, I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on what's going on.

A:Two ethernet ports in the wall but one doesn't work?

There could be a couple of reasons for this situation. Oftentimes when cabling jobs are undertaken, they may install a two-port (or more) plate on a wall. However, that's not to say all ports are wired up at the time; it could be left for a later date, subject to requirements. Another possibility is the cable exists, but it isn't hooked in through a switch at the other end to provide connectivity.

You could either approach the management and ask them about connectivity, just in case there is a wiring error. Alternatively, you could purchase a cheap switch and use this for connecting additional devices from the working port.

Hey guys, my laptop asus stopped working with wifi connection and I was just reading some posts here about this same problem but didn't find how to fix it.

I was uninstalling some programs from my pc but I didn't uninstall programs named "something wireless". I just took off what I knew I could.

I also tried the option "solve problems" in the wireless pc symbol and the answer was to connect my laptop to an ethernet cable...that never happened. Just now.

Does anyone knows how I get back my wireless connection? Pleasee

A:WiFi doesn't work only with cable ethernet

Powercycle the modem and router. Here is a specific order if you have a separate modem and router.
1. Shut down all PC's.
2. Shut down the Modem and router.
3. Power on the modem only. Wait 2 minutes or so.
4. Power on the router. Wait 2 minutes or so.
If you have a modem/router combo, then you don't need step 4.
5. Boot up the PC and see if you can connect.

I have a new PC (notebook) that my friend gave me. It's name is "Gigabook" which is not very famous.. I suspect it is a small company that combines hardware into a notebook.

Anyways, I have installed Windows 7 on it but found out that the internet doesn't work. for some reason I can't turn on the WiFi to find out my network and when I connect an Ethernet cable to the notebook, nothing happens..

I thought it's the driver, could download it and transfer it to the notebook via USB drive. the problem is I can't find the software anywhere..

My network card is WAN Miniport. I can check any other hardware here, it's just that you won't find anything about Gigabook..

a) this is my first post on your forums. please forgive me if I posted in the wrong place or made other noob mistake.
b) I come from the Mac and Linux world, so I don't have a lot experience on this OS.. I'll appreciate any help.

Thank you very much in advance.

Just the other day, TWC came and replaced a defective router for us, kind folks that they are, with a router that actually works.

Computer Details: HP Pavillion 500-164 Windows 10 Home 64-bit
Ethernet Adaptor: Qualcomm Atheros AR8161 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller (NDIS 6.30)
Driver Version:

My PC was plugged into the old router with CAT5E when he replaced it. The computer was booted up and on (if that makes a difference). The computer detects the connections, but it never identifies, therefore no internet. My dad is able to plug in with the same cable in the same port on the modem and get a connection.

Any ideas?

A:ethernet connection says connected but internet doesn't work help please!

Hi there, thanks in advance.

I've had this computer a few months and so far it works great. Then today I turn it on and try to go on the internet and it says I have no connection. Tried plugging and unplugging the cable, wiggled it around, tried to connect it with a different cable and I still have no internet. The cable is in, it tells me there is a local area connection and all, but when I go to properties there is not IP, etc etc.

I have it on a network, if that helps, and none of the others have this problems. The computer prints to a shared printer attached to another computer on my network, so I tried to print something to see if that was still working, but it says it can't due to an unknown error.

Is there a fix for this?

A:Computer seems fine, but the ethernet input doesn't work?

You might try cycling the modem and router.
Unplug the power from the back of the router and modem for 10 seconds.
Plug the router back in and let it boot up,then do the same with the modem.

I am currently using an Ethernet cable plugged directly into my motherboard for internet access. The other end is plugged into an electrical outlet adapter that I believe uses the electrical wires in my house to transmit the signal from my router. When I first boot up the PC, everything works fine. However, after the PC goes into sleep mode and I wake it up, the Internet connection no longer works. Usually it has the yellow ! icon and says limited connection. Why is it doing this, and how can I fix it?

A:Ethernet connection doesn't work after waking from sleep

Make sure the adapter is not set to go to sleep state in the device properties, in Device Manager. Also it could be an issue with the Ethernet over Power adapters losing the connection during the computer sleep state.

Hi all - I have Win7 Ultimate 64bit and my ethernet pci card DLink DFE-530TX+ (rev F) doesn't recognize the broadband connection on bootup. I have to disable it in the device manager and then re-enable it. Then the broadband connection works.

I have the latest driver, from the DLink site, which is specifically for Win7: (10/12/2009)

I put in the ethernet card as a workaround, because the onboard ethernet device had exactly the same problem. It is a Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller. I got the latest driver from Realtek (7.26.902.2010 - dateed 9/2/2010) but like the DLink, when I first boot up, it does not recogize the broadband internet connection.

I had hoped the PCI card would not experience the same problem -but it does.

Ok, so I've re-installed Windows XP (SP2) and after it booted up, I noticed that my onboard ethernet adapter wasn't recognised. So I went and downloaded the appropriate drivers (SiS900.zip) from the mobo's official site (it's a PCChips M848A mobo) but when I try to install the drivers, it still says that the hardware isn't functional (Code 1).

I've tried many different versions of SiS900 drivers but it simply won't work.

When I tried the setup.exe file that came with the official driver, the install would say "Update Driver for PnP Device Fail. Setup will exit".

That's when I simply forwarded the windows hardware installer to an XP folder i found in the zip file. But still, it doesn't work.

I really need help on this matter. Thanks in advance...

EDIT: Maybe it's worth mentioning that I re-installed WinXP over an existing windows partition without formatting it. I simply deleted the former windows installation files.

with a PC conencted to the router by cable - please post an ipconfig /all - see below

How to power cycle

“power cycle” process to reboot or reset the modem/router

Switch off all the devices modem, router and computers also unplug their power cables.
Wait at least 1 to 5 minutes,
Plug the power cords back in, but don’t switch them on.
First turn on the modem and then wait for a few minutes for it to settle and all the lights to become stable.
Next switch on the router (if a seperate device) and then wait for a few minutes for it to settle and all the lights to become stable.
Now turn on your computer, You should now be able to access the Internet.

Some time ago I was discussing ways and means of stopping my kids changing their IP addresses to get around ACLs I'd created on my DLINK router.

Two solutions were offered: OpenDNS, which I'm still using, and setting up a DHCP reservation using MAC addresses.

Recently I had to replace one of the machines. Lets say the original machines mac address was 0A:0A:0A:0A:0A:0A (just for convenience), and it's IP address was

When I replaced the machine the MAC address is completely different.

I completely forgot to update the DHCP reservation. Yet, the PC can access the internet.

If I change the address on the machine, of course, it still connects to the internet, I guess because the MAC address is not in the DHCP reservation list. So I updated the entry in the router.

The computer still accesses the internet with (as I would expect), but if I change the address to (for example), it still works.

So.. Without the mac address in the router (but with a reservation using the IP address), there appear to be no restrictions. I hoped the router would match the MAC address to the requesting IP address and go "Nope, these dont match. Sorry, I'm not letting you connect".

Obviously I've done something wrong when I set it up.

Can anyone suggest why this might not be working?

A:Reserved list in router doesn't seem to work

There are 2 things in here: First, if you created your ACLs based on MAC Address, there is still a way to bypass it: by changing local MAC Address -- many NICs do allows that.

Second, if you created ACLs based on the IP address, you should also update the DHCP to offer the old IP address to the new MAC Address.

What I could suggest you, then, is to create a rule in the very bottom, to deny any unknown MAC Address, and then update the rules to allow your kids to browse -- either via their computer's MAC Address or via IP with the updated DHCP reservation. Pretty much you had done all of this, but missed the "deny all" in the bottom.

So I have a Netgear WGR614 router and when I hook it up the computer says it's connected but I can't load any web pages. If I take the router out and go straight from the modem to the computer it does work.
It has worked in the past but I've never had a perfect connection..
Would I need a new and better router or is there a different problem here?

A:Internet doesn't work when router is connected

Let's see this when you are connected directly to the modem.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Sorry about my title

One morning I woke up and my wireless network wasn't there.
So I went to my router and the lights were all on, so I power cycled it.
The power light came on and went off and the Wan and 4 LAN lights stayed on.
(With no cables plugged in it still does that.)

I clicked on "Turn parental control on and deny computers access to ONLY these sites", entered the website url in the box, ticked it and set the schedule to always. But when I try to access the blocked web page it takes a little longer than usual but then loads on the website normally.

The two sites entered in the boxes are the ones I've tried to test the feature with, but both are not being blocked.

Can someone see anything I've done wrong?

I have tried emptying the cache and rebooting the computer and router, but still the pages just refuse to be blocked.

What's happening??? Advice would be appreciated.

I'm not sure if this is something new that started with my new Windows 8 computer, or if it has always been this way, but I noticed that when my desktop, which is connected to my router via a cable, is shutdown, the router stops functioning, and I can't access the web with my notebook. Is there a setting somewhere that would keep the router working without disconnecting the LAN cable from the desktop. My desktop is normally up and running from the time I get up, until I go to bed, which is why I never noticed this before.

A:Router doesn't work when desktop computer is shut down

Router make/model?

Is your desktop connected to the router via one of the (i'll assume) 4 LAN ports on the router?

I recently switched over to Comcast for internet and have an xfinity router. The wifi works perfectly on all computers and devices except one. It's not working on a large desktop that uses a TP-Link wireless card. When I try to connect to the internet from Firefox on this computer, it just says "Connecting..." on the top of the tab for a while and eventually goes to a "Server not found" page.

Every now and then, usually after I try something random to fix it (such as turning on "SoftAP mode" on the TP-Link card) the internet will work for a few seconds, but then it stops again.

(Sorry if I didn't put enough information in here; tell me if you need to know anything else.)

I really do hope that someone will be able to assist me with this very frustrating issue I am having with my desktop. For about the past month or so I have not been able to connect to any internet web sites. I typically use Firefox for web browsing but that stopped working and also IE 7 and Safari stopped working as well. I have tried to do almost everything I can think of to get it to work again.
I've already tried to:
1. Disable windows firewall / windows defender
2. Disable add-ons in IE
3. Uninstall anti-virus software
4. Reset the TCP/IP connection through command prompt using Netsh commands
5. Rewired/Reset the modem and Router
6. Logged into the Router and tested the connection via Ethernet cable from Laptop running XP
7. Reset system services and clients - DHCP, DNS, HTTP
8. Ran several cleanup/scan utilities - McAfee Anti-Virus, Malwarebytes (Anti-Malware), MS Malicious Software Removal Tool, HijackThis

I have just installed the latest version of HijackThis on the machine and have run a scan. This is the following log:

About two weeks ago the internet in the apartment started acting very poor. A day or so after that, it quit alltogether, with Windows saying it is a DNS server issue. I have reason to believe the IT guy for the apartment has NO idea what he's talking about, as he has told the landlord that it is probably too many wireless routers causing interference. This is not the case.

The symptoms are that, when connected to our wireless router windows says there is a DNS issue, and we do not have internet access. While plugged directly in to the wall the internet works perfectly fine.
My speculation is that whatever we are getting our internet from in the line is not allowing our router to assign IP addresses (or not handling them properly on its end), thus causing the DNS issue and the lack of internet.

Supposedly there are only about 4 apartments (out of 16) that are affected by this same problem, and I am the only person actively trying to fix this, as it is affecting my school work. I have limited access to the hardware of the building, but can get just about whatever I need for testing purposes through the landlord if I try hard enough.

If anyone has any ideas what this issue may be or how it may be resolved, please let me know. My schooling is kind of relying on it.

I just bought a D-Link DIR-600 Wireless Router and have already installed it to a normal modem. I'm using an XP Desktop.

It stated there that the router has been configured successfully. However, when I try to connect it to the Internet, I received Error 678: The remote computer did not respond.

But, it works fine if I plugged off the router and connected the Internet directly to the modem (that's why I can use the internet now).

Can anyone help me find out what is wrong with my router? I've been trying to do some troubleshoots for 4 hours on my own but it still didn't work. I really need your help since I'm really new to this networking stuffs.

Thanks a lot.

No one else is having issues connecting with their laptops and smartphones, so it must be a problem with my computer.

We have Comcast cable for our ISP. We have a Linksys BEFSR41 wired router. We have two pcs. One has Windows 98 1st edition, and the second has Windows XP. Both PCs have ethernet cards, and both individually work directly with the cable modem although the Windows 98 PC only gets 790 down. (Note: Several years ago, the Windows 98 PC did get 3000 down, and then Comcast did something when they raised the download speeds.)

We weren't able to get the router to work. Then, a Comcast guy came over here for a tv problem, and he set up the router, modem and pc in the usual order and both pcs were connected to the internet. This lasted for one hour and then simply stopped working. We haven't been able to get it to work since. When we plug the modem into the router, the WAN lights in the front of the modem do not come on. We tried switching the cables, and it still doesn't work. The same cable works fine from the pc to the modem. We cannot figure this out.

Note: In the back of the router, we have the cable connected from the modem to the WAN port and not to the Uplink port.

How do we fix this?
What if we buy an N-wireless router and use it as a wired router? Will that work? The latest issue of Maximum PC is recommending the D-link DIR 615 as the best bargain wireless N router.

Thanks in advance,

I have searched EVERYwhere but cannot seem to find a person who experience similar problem, let alone a solution.
I've been using Linksys WRT54G router for quite a while now with the two computers that i currently have. (ISP:Rogers Hi Speed) There hasn't been any problem until this week.
I haven't changed ANY settings on either my computer or my router (other than some port forwarding). All of a sudden i cant connect to the internet on one of my two computers connnected via this router (this is a wireless router, but i am NOT using wireless. All computers are WIRED to the router.)
I have tried a bunch of basic things like plugging off the modem n router, resetting the router to factory default, etc.
The compouter does recognize the router, for example, when I plug my router off, the computer says "the local area connection cable is plugged off" or something along that line. Also, the local area connection shows up on Control Panel/Network and Internet Connections.
A strange thing is, when i run the "system restore" from the start menu, the internet works. If i restart the computer, it doesnt work again.

I would really appreciate your help on this matter.
Thanks a LOT in advance.

Hello. I just got a new cable modem and my WRT54GL router does not connect to the internet. The router was working fine with the old modem before the modem went out. When I plug an Ethernet cable into the modem I can connect to the internet just fine. But when I connect the modem to the router I cannot connect to the internet through the router. I tried reseting the router. Unplugging both the router and modem at the same time then restarting the computer. Nothing works. I could use some help.

okay im at UNL in a college dorm and i'm trying to network my room. I know it's possible because my neighbors have routers in their rooms but for some reason theirs work perfectly and mine does not. I have a D-Link 4300 GameFuel router which worked at my house perfectly. I currently use ethernet cables to hook up to my laptops, and it works perfectly. However, when I set up my router, my computer can detect it and can connect to it, but whenever I try to surf to a website, it says "Page cannot be displayed" because I can't (for some reason) get internet through the router

It doesn't work if I connect directly to the router or if I use it wirelessly. I've tried it with and without a password (WEP, WPA) and still, no progress. What else is there to do? I've reset the router over a dozen times to the default settings and nothing seems to work. It's driving me nuts.

I have setup a Static IP address through Windows XP, and I am trying to forward ports to my Xbox 360 (to avoid Strict NAT settings). The problem right now is that I cannot access my routers set up page.

I am using a D-Link WBR-2310, which is not installed on the PC, but runs a password-protected wireless network. I have run IPconfig, and have obtained the IP address and Default Gateway. When I type either in my Web Browser (tried Firefox/IE) I am led to my DSL modem's setup page and not my wireless router.

I have tried every IP address possible (from the default router address to the IPconfig) and I cannot access my wireless router setup. Through the D-Link website, I have also tried to use an emulator, but I am unable to make any changed regarding Port Forwarding. Once again, my wireless router is not installed, and the installation is not working because "The router is not detected- Error 322"

I have been trying to solve this problem for the past 4 hours with no luck so I would appreciate any help! Thanks in advance
