Preferred Solution: [SOLVED] Lots and lots of trouble with bitdefender and windows xp..

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: [SOLVED] Lots and lots of trouble with bitdefender and windows xp..

In Bit Defender, do a Live Update of your virus and software definitions. That should update you to the latest version. Or post to their forum, you will get a better response then in this general Microsoft Forum. or better yet, uninstall it and use Avast Free version and or Microsoft Security Essentials.

Hi, my name's Katie and I'm having major virus/spyware,adware,malware removal issues! I

have a lot of different things going on here, and can't make any sense of it. I tried

following other people's solved threads, but they didn't solve my issues, so I guess I need

personalized help. I have Windows security running (well, I usually do when it's working

properly,) and I run Ad-Aware and Spybot regularly, but it appears that they cannot solve

my issue. Anyway, here's a list of things that have been happening to my computer since the

virus happened...

1. I KNOW the virus was contracted in AIM. An IM came in from a friend with only a link. It

didn't look suspicious to me, so I clicked it, and all of a sudden I had IMEd everyone in

my buddy list the link, and received about a million IMs back (didn't have time to read

them before My Computer's virtual memory ran out and crashed AIM on me.

2.When the computer starts up, sometimes a default background appears before the logon

screen with the user accounts appears.

3.After logon, the same thing in general happens every time. Spybot comes up with a bunch

of messages saying that there is a registry change to my homepage or something else

happening. I deny it, and it denies it over and over again to seemingly no avail. A .txt

file appears on the desktop. I have never opened this file, don't know what it is, and

delete it every time. My homepage is con... Read more

Hello Bleepers! You have helped me in the past and I am back. This time, this is my mom's computer and she didn't have a firewall (until now) and so this thing was infected beyond anything I have seen!I will be posting the log below, but first let me tell you a few things. I did follow the preparation instructions as best as I could, however, there were certain things I could not do.Ad-Aware:I kept running Ad-Aware and rebooting and it kept finding 50+ new critical items every time. I then disconnected the internet access to the computer and ran it. This way I got it down to 2 entries it said it couldn't removed and it couldn't remove them even after restarting.Spybot:A similar thing happened with Spybot, except I connected to the internet only to download the software and updates and disconnected to do the scan and fixes. Spybot also said it couldn't fix certain items, EVEN AFTER doing it during rebooting.I then ran HouseCall, Bit Defender and Avert Stinger (Panda was taking too long and I wasn't sure if it was stalled). Then, I installed ZoneAlarm and Finally ran HijackThis.Hopefully you can help me get this thing cleaned up and it top shape soon! A:Infected By Lots Of Spyware. Get Lots Of Popup Windows!

Hello,We can definitely help you, but first you need to help us. The first step in this process is to apply Service Pack 1 for Windows XP. Without this update, you're wide open to re-infection, and we're both just wasting our time.Click here to get Service Pack 1Warning: You must only update to Service Pack 1, and not Service Pack 2. I just had my computer fixed in another thread not too long ago. However, I have a new problem and I don't know the cause or root of it. Lots and lots of pop up ad windows open at once randomly. Please help.

Thank you.

A:lots and lots of pop up ad windows open at once

If you haven't already, download, install, update immediately, then run AdawareSE. Make sure to customize the settings in Ad-aware for better scan results.

Then download, install, update immediately then run Spybot S&D.

Have each fix whatever problems they may find.

Download CWShredder at http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/CWShredder.sfx.exe and run it. Uncompress the file and run it. Click on 'I Agree' button if you agree with it. Click on 'Fix' (it will automatically fix anything it finds for you) and OK. If it asks if you want to delete a certain random file, choose No and post that filename here. Let it finish the scan and then hit Next and Exit.

Run a scan using Panda ActiveScan . Be sure to select any AutoClean Feature. Post the log from the Panda scan here.

Then get HijackThis . This program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Run the scan, save the log, but do not fix anything yet. Many files it finds are harmless, and required for your system to operate.

Post your log here

Hello,

ComboFix is frequently updated.

Please delete your existing version. Grab a new copy from one of the links below.

This machine does not have the Windows XP Recovery Console installed.

The Windows recovery console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery mode that allows us to help you in the case that your computer has a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please do this:
Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Place combofix.exe on your Desktop

Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994
Select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System

For you, it would be:

Hello,* Download Combofix to your desktop.Doubleclick combofix.exeFollow the prompts.Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang. When finished and after reboot (in case it asks to reboot), combofix will open again to gather the necessary information for the log. This may take a bit. When done, Combofix will close and a log should open, combofix.txt. Post the contents of this log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt - unless I ask you to.

Hi,

I sure need help  --- I do not know how to deal with viruses, trojans, spyware, etc.

My husband and I were traveling. We had to use public Wifi places to check our email on our laptop. when we got home and checked our email accounts on our laptops, we found some really weird looking email messages. I 'think' my husband opened one that had his name in the Subject line, but we deleted all he other ones that looked strange. We did not open those emails, just deleted them.

Now all 3 of our computers are doing really weird things. I have run scan after scan after scan, both downloaded one and online ones. Sometimes they find problems and fix them. sometimes the scans find nothing. Yet our problems just seem to be getting worse and worse. I DESPERATELY need a lot of help.

I know it would be very confusing to try to work on all 3 of our computers at once so maybe we can start with my husband's desktop computer.

I am currently running Avast on it and it has been running for hours. It is find TONS of things like these ----

"...is infected by win32:Funweb-K [Pup}"

"...is infected by JS: ScriptIP-inf [Trj}

etc, etc, etc.

I have very little knowledge of how to fix a computer problem and no idea what to do. And I have absolutely NO idea how our desktops became infected from our lap top.

Is anyone willing to help me? I know it is bad and will probably take a long time to fix, but I need help... Read more

Ok, I have lots of XP problems:

Can't open My computer from the desktop, the computer just locks up whilst attempting to open it, showing me the animated torch, saying it is looking for files.

The computer is running really slow, locking up and crashing programs for no apparent reason.

Cant access the drop down box (shortcut key F4) in windows explorer/applications/anywhere.

Internet explorer refuses to do anything if I type a web address without the http:// into the address box. It worked before, but now it isn't for some reason.

Finally, when I restart windows, it locks up for anything up to 5 minutes when it comes back up. The windows bar with the start button on, when I pass my mouse over it, the pointer turns to an hourglass and I am unable to do anything unti it sorts itself out.

I have tried running several anti virus programs, including AVG, Mcafee and Norton. Only AVG came up with a virus, 'Dialler'. I cleared this and it didn't make any difference. I alos tried system restore from several points, but each time it told me that it was unable to restore.

If ANYONE can give me any help at all, I would be extremely grateful.

Yours,

Wayne Donnelly.

Thanks so much!

A:Have lots of trouble please help me

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Go to Start->Settings->Control Panel and double-click on the System icon. On the Performance tab click File System. Click the Troubleshooting tab, and then check Disable System Restore. Click OK. Click Yes when you are prompted to restart Windows. When we have confirmed that your log file is clean, you may enable System Restore again by following the same steps as above... Read more

Hello,

This morning Norton 360 alerted me that it had found two suspicious items with the name "Bloodhound.SONAR.1". I removed them and it told me I need to restart my computer for the effects to take place. I restarted my computer and it ran fine for a few hours until just about 10 minutes ago when once again Norton 360 said that it had detected Bloodhound.SONAR.1. This is what it says:

Affected Area

2 processes

c:\windows\system32\ceswxfst.sys
c:\windows\system32\ceswxfst.sys

1 file

c:\windows\system32\ceswxfst.sys

1 browser cache

(No details available)

And the other one says the same thing except the 2 processes and 1 file are c:\windows\system32\sxtsyctd.sys

There are also two other processes running that I Googled and returned as malware: C:\WINDOWS\system32\routing.exe and C:\WINDOWS\system32\Nobicyt.exe.

Well, I've finally got all this new stuff I ordered but I'm having a ton of trouble getting XP and all of my hardware properly installed.

When installing XP, on the setup files step right after formatting, there were 4 files that refused to install. I ended up telling it to go on without installing each of them to see what would happen, and XP appeared in install perferctly anyway.

Not sure if that could lead to my other problems, I thought those setup files were only for getting XP on the drive and once that was done they were no longer needed, but maybe that's not the case. Anyway, here's what's happening now

When trying to install my All-in-wonder 7500 drivers, it says it needs ksuser.dll from the XP CD, which never used to happen when installing those drivers. Finally I gave up and moved on to try to install my sound card and the same thing is happening. I pull the sound card, enabled the onboard AC97 sound and same there too. So, it must be an XP problem somewhere

I tried XP on two different hard drives, and it refused to install those 4 files on each (sorry, dont know them all, but one I remember was driver.cab which stuck in my mind because it sounded quite important - its likely I suppose that the ksuser.dll was another one of the 4)

Anyway, I really want to get this straitened out. I'm happy to reinstall to fix it, but I know I'll get the same 4 not installing. I suppose my main question here is now to get those 4 files to go ... Read more

My Dell Inspiron 530S running Vista (32-bit) Ultima has the very annoying habit of having a problem loadingb my user profile after it have been left logged into any other user (wife, or one of several daughters) Before I understood what the problem was I would simply shutdown and re-boot and I would seem to be back to normal. However, as I was trying to clean up the hard drive the other day, I noticed that the User director have 30+ extra profiles in it! They are in the form of TEMP.%computername%.000 thru TEMP.%computername%.030 - plus a few others that relate to a 'repair' of one my daughter's directory. I suspect that repair was faulty/incomplete but she seems happy with the directories she can access.
Questions:
1.) Why is it doing this? I have read other logon failure threads and have looked at the profile entries in REGEDIT
2.) Why doesn't takeown command allow me to get rid of all the excess USERS directory entries?

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.
Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix and remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
Remember to re-enable the protection again afterwards before connecting to the Internet.

Double click SDFix.exe and choose Install to extract it to its own folder on the Desktop. Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
Choose your usual account.

Open the c:\SDFix folder and double click RunThis.cmd to start the script.
Type Y to begin the script.
It will remove the Trojan Services then make some repairs to the registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool will be running and removing files.
When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the remo... Read more

Hello.... My worst nightmare just happened.... I think I've lost 100gb of data......
Ok here is how it happened: I have a Western Digital 200gb hard drive, on a 1200mhz cpu, so I needed somthing for my disk space barrier. So I got the latest LifeGuard Tools from the official WD homepage.... everything worked fine, untill yesterday, then I started getting the messages of a corrupt file or directory, and windows advised me to use scandisk... Because I have winXP I had to reboot the computer to run scandisk.

Well It looked like scandisk fixed something, but the files were gone... that was just a small problem because these were just 6 mp3's and I had a backup of them....

But this morning I couldn't open my hard drive (its an extra drive, the windows is on another drive so it works fine) so I rebooted again and ran scandisk..... and when it was done I could open the drive, but it was empty...... over 100gb of data gone....
And I don't have bakup for all of it (about 50%)....

Are my files gone, or is it possible to recover them... And is there any solution for this problem, or is this disk not safe?

Please help!!

I've done the trouble shooting, I've tried to go back to the settings from 4 days ago and it couldn't do it. Right now as I type the screen pops up gray coloring while I type.

The monitor wasn't dropped, no magnets and it's only a year old! Dell puter.
I can still use it but either can't read some things and some programs won't work cuz of the required color qty.

I can't think of anything else--PLEASE HELP!

Since I've started using a wireless connection, I've had problems
with my secondary computer. It frequently cuts off and is extremely
slow when it does work, with pictures, music, and websites frequently
not loading. I use Netgear as my router and Road Runner as my cable
connection. When I first started using a wireless connection, I used
Netgear then switched to a Road runner router then back to Netgear
because of the continous problems I have been experiencing. Recently,
because of the fact that my internet has been extremely slow and that
it cuts off often, I played around with the switches on Netgear and now
the internet in my secondary computer does not work at all. The connection
was set to infrastructure and I changed it to ad-hoc. When I saw that
it didn't work, I changed it back to infrastructure, but the internet
did not start working again. My router is still blinking but both my
wireless connection and local area connections are shown to not be working.
Also, my main computer is experiencing similar problems as my secondary one
after I changed those said settings, it is very slow and many items are
not loading. How can I fix this problem?

Any help would be greatly appreciated and the sooner the better! I have a lot of work to do, and this is putting a big delay on it all.

Thanks in advance.

Sorry about the length. OK, a few weeks ago my Internet suddenly started acting up. I have XP home edition and am connected through a high speed Internet with a cable company in a college apartment. I contacted the company on 4 separate occasions and each time they said nothing was wrong with my connection and that they were getting good reading from my computer (whatever that means).

The Problem
After being online for a random amount of time, 1 hour to 3 it seems, my browsers (firefox and IE) stop working and Norton live update stops working. AIM still works and i can even send and receive files over AIM when this happens. The weather icon in my object dock also stops working. If i exit AIM and try to restart, it will not let me sign on. All i can do is restart the computer and use it for another couple hours before i have to restart again.

What I Did
Thinking it was a virus i manually downloaded virus definitions and a Trojan hunter called The Cleaner. I found a few viruses, the names escape me but the problem was not fixed. I had recently D/Led Windows service pack 2, but the problem started before before that on the same day. I Got SP2 the day after this all started, and looking back i don't think i noticed that Norton Live Update was not working until after getting it so at the time i thought it was not compatible with Norton. I rolled back SP2 and ran my scans again (including ad-aware and spybot S+D) finding nothing. I reinstalled windows twice... Read more

not sure on the blue screen.. as this happens from time to time with everybody's computer.. there are different critical errors all the time that will cause your computer to shut down.. sometimes it does it just to have a good time..

although as far as the drivers that are missing....
go to my computer
right click on open spot and go to properties
go to hardware
and click on the device manager
any devices there with a ? mark beside them.. need to b reinstalled.. just click on them and on the main screen it'll say reinstall

Right now I am in safe mode and I am having a huge problem. I have a virus I believe, that won't let me run a scan to find out where it is. It seems about 10 minutes into the scan using both Symantec and AVG, the computer just shuts off. And also, when I turn my computer on in normal mode the explorer won't open and shows an error message (not internet explorer). Further, it also says some type of error with Windows Driver Debug? Well, here's my hijackthis results while in safe mode. If I need to do it while not in safemode let me know and I'll try to. Also, if I look in my C:\windows files, I see a bunch of $$uninstall$$Kbblah blah's all over the place.

Hello,
My computer is an HP G62 Notebook PC running Windows 7. I am having an issue with pop-ups that has gotten worse in the last day. I could not open the window to post in this forum without first receiving several pop-up ads to "clean my computer". These ads all have the name OffersWizard on them. In addition I keep receiving error  and other types of messages. Such as:
Access Forbidden!
You don't have permission to access the requested directory. There is either no index document or the directory is read protected. If you think this is a server error please contact the webmaster. error 403.
I also get pop-ups to install a new video driver with the web address:
http://vas.gaslitlactealwowser.com

and when trying to uninstall OffersWizard which I did not personally install I receive this message:

OffersWizard Network System Driver
Uninstalling this service requires a complete machine reboot.
Attention: If this service is disabled, any other service that explicitly depend on this service will fail to operate properly, continue with the uninstall process?
It will not uninstall

Thanks,
Peggy

Hello.

I suspect a virus on my wife's HP 6730s with Vista 32-bit Basic laptop (I'm writing from my home PC).

I cannot boot the laptop normally. In "safe mode", I can't run any of the virus-bashing software I've downloaded from my PC via USB memory stick. I can boot from Ubuntu via CD or USB but, again, cannot run any .exe files.

I can access wireless internet with Ubuntu, but network activation via "safe mode with networking" is not possible. Device Manager has also just started showing extra network devices, including isatap.

I suppose reinstalling Windows might be the way to go, but the laptop came ready-configured so there are no Windows CDs.

Any help would be great.

Many thanks.

Man is my problem complicated.....it started about a month ago, but i wasnt here for half of that month, so i didnt use my computer:

-I think this started when my bro was downloading something from ares. Afterwards, my internet started failing, and i eventually didnt have any more internet. I scanned my computer with trend micro anti-virus 2007, it found nothing, but i guess its because its expired, heh, trust me, i tried it a lot. I also scanned with spy sweeper and it found nothing either, its expired too. Then programs started acting weird, some startup programs didnt start up, and then spy sweeper didnt want to sweep.

-My computer started going slower, and the worst part is that everytime i try to shut down my computer in normal mode after i log in into an account, i get a blue screen.Sometimes, when i try to open up a program, nothing happens, i try 5 more times and still nothing! Also, i just found out that if i plug in an xbox 360 controller, another blue screen pops up, what the heck man! Also, when i click on a link in google, it sends me somewhere else, but if i go back by clicking the back button twice, and press on the same link again, it works.

-I cant connect to the internet in normal mode(i dont know if i already said that before). I can only get in the internet through safe mode with networking. Ive got windows vista by the way, when i check my network's status, it tells me its on a limited network. I contacted my internet provider, and they couldnt h... Read more

Hello all

So I've contracted something major here. AVG is giving me win32 heur alerts on a ton of .exe and system32 files. I've got adult links on my desk and strange pop up sounds. I can't go to any website that offers fixes for win32 heur. Tried to dl Combofix (renamed it too) and that won't start. Looks pretty bad...not trying to wipe my drive if that can be avoided. Not too handy technically...Thanks a ton guys!

A:Lots of trouble w/ win32/heur (virut?)

Hello -

I don't like to be the bearer of bad news, but your AV has indicated Virut, ComboFix has given you a warning indicating a possible file infector such as Virut. That's enough for me to tell you the following:

Your system is infected with a polymorphic file infector called Virut. Virut is capable of infecting all the machine's executable files (.exe) and screensaver files (.scr). However, the problem is that the virus has a number of bugs in its code, and as a result, it may misinfect a proportion of executable files and therefore, the files are corrupted beyond repair. As of now, security experts suggest that a format and clean install, or destructive recovery if you have an OEM recovery partition, is the best way to clean the infection and it is the best and safest way to return the machine to its normal working state.

Backup all your documents and important items (personal data, work documents, etc) only. DO NOT backup any executable files (softwares) and screensavers (*.scr). It attempts to infect any accessed .exe or .scr files by appending itself to the executable.

Also, avoid backing up compressed files (zip/cab/rar) files that have .exe or .scr files inside them. Virut can penetrate and infect .exe files inside compressed files too.

Recent variants also modify htm, html, asp and php files.

Do not back up to another machine, as it may become compromised. Burn to DVD/CD, or to an external drive which has nothing else on it, and which you can for... Read more

Below are all the notes I've been taking since I started diagnostics/repair on this computer. They're pretty detailed, but if you have any questions at all, feel free to ask. Also, I can't seem to figure out which motherboard is in the laptop. Dell is no help at all; I can't even talk to them without purchasing "premium service." Keep in mind that I can't boot to my OS, so downloading a program to identify the motherboard is out of the question. Thanks in advance for any help.

System Specs:

Model: Dell Studio 1735
BIOS Version: A04 (08/01/2008), there is an update to A05 (12/05/2008) on Dell's website

RAM: 4GB DDR2 SDRAM
OS: Windows Vista 32-bit is on the original HDD, but the new one (in it now) has nothing
HDD: Western Digital Scorpio Blue 320GB (WD3200BPVT), Original was a Western Digital 320GB (WD3200BEVT)
GPU: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 w/ 256MB dedicated memory

Changing the Sata mode to ATA/IDE should indeed fix the 7B error.
If you do get XP installed you may have to search for drivers if the laptop was only shipped with Vista.
As long as the Network card works you should be able to get 7 on it I think but bear in mind you can't upgrade from XP to 7 it will have to be a clean install of 7.

A few days ago I removed a virus from my computer and after some work I thought I had restored the computer back to normal. Everything seems to be running fine but now everytime I start my computer there are about 20 windows that open up. Almost seems like it is a brand new computer. Some of them are windows programs that are starting i.e. fax/scan etc that have never opened before as well as about 15 windows that open folders that say: windows-startmenu-programs-startup-then a myriad of various HP, lightscribe, games etc. It appears it is openeing every file.

How do I keep them from opening like before? Any help would be much appreciated.

A:Solved: LOTS of windows open when I start computer

Go to start/all programs, right click the startup folder and click open.
Everything in there runs at startup.
Delete everything in there that you don't want to run at startup.
See if that helps the problem any.

Hi, I am going to try to post as much info on my problem as possible, which may be quite a bit. I have been getting quite a few BSOD's in the past few weeks (in which time I have not installed any new software other than SP2 for vista 64, which I have already determined not to be the problem.). I will post what I think are the most relevant ones in the order that they happened (oldest to newest).
1 - System_service_exception error with nvoclk64.sys
So I uninstalled all overclocking software, and reinstalled nvidia drivers. The error happened again, so I installed the Omega drivers. Error continued so I went back to latest nvidia drivers again. Then the errors seemed to stop until,
2 - Kmode_exception_not_handled error with jraid.sys. So not knowing too much about the jraid driver ended up just installing the raid drivers for my motherboard (GA-EX58-UD3R). Im not sure if this helped at all, because after a reboot I got another,
3 - Kmode_exception_not_handled error, this time only pointing to ntoskrnl.exe. Not much help. Turned the computer back on and soon got
4 - Kmode_exception_not_handled error with ataport.sys. So i decided to overwrite the file (from recovery cmd line) with the one on my Vista install disk. Rebooted, and got the next bsod,
5 - Kmode_exception_not_handled pointing this time to dxgkrnl.sys. This is where I started to get REALLY confused, as all of the other errors except 1, could have had to do with a bad hard drive or something.... No clue on this error. ... Read more

Its a neighbor of mine I help them take care of their computer all the time.

The problem is the screen freezing randomly, it might be in 3 min might be 5 or 10 or 25, it does it after it has been turned off for awhile or all night or when you have been on it for awhile or quite awhile. Point being its not heating up cause it does it when it has been off for hours them 3 or 4 min after it is turned on or sometime it might be 2 hours after you turn it on. I had a thread a couple of weeks ago about this same computer I came to the conclusion that it was the Powersupply, so I put in a brand new 400W powersupply and it ran great (no freeze ups for a few days then all of a sudden it started in again).

The mouse freezes so they can't do anything but shut it down at the tower so I gave them another usb mouse tonight and told them when it freezes to unplug there mouse and put the new usb mouse in and see it it works right away then it would be the mouse. I have great doubts about it being that but I am at witts end. I consider myself pretty good at fixing computers hardware and software problems but I am lost. I have no idea. I looked in the divice manager everything is ok, checked the events and nothing happening there. I know the computer is clean of viruses or spyware cause I keep it clean for them monthly.

A:Solved: Windows XP SP2- Screen freezing-no pattern- but lots- Can someone help? Pleas

The first thing that comes to mind with older machines is overheating. They can accumulate a lot of dust (even in the cleanest places) and fans can get bogged down. Check all your air intakes and remove dust from the interior. Make sure that all fans are moving (including the one on the graphics card, if present).

While inside, check all your connectiuons and make sure the graphics card is firmly in its slot.

If that doesn't help, try a memory test:

MemScope (Floppy and CD images.)
Microsoft Memory Test (floppy or CD ISO image)
Memtest86

If you have enough memory sticks, you can test them by removing one at a time and see if the problem disappears.

If you are running Vista and can boot up, go to Start > Search and type:

mdsched.exe

Choose to run a memory diagnostic on next boot. Or, you can boot from the DVD and run it from there.

Ok, Here goes...

I have a windows XP Home computer which i got about mid 2006 and basically ever since I got it I have been having problems starting up. It originally worked properly for a few months then the problems began.....

First it would not do anything whilst on the windows loading screen (progress bar etc worked but it got stuck on that screen and wouldn't advance), the HDD light would blink for a while and then it would just sit there. Usually i would restart until quite a while later I discovered that if i left it for long enough (about 5-10 minutes) it would eventually load. I have also performed several reformats in this time and the problem would disappear for a while then show its ugly face again. It wouldn't do this every time but a large majority of the time it would.

Now however, it does not do this, instead, it would go through the loading screen, finish that, and the screen would go blank (no signal detected etc) and then it wouldn't do anything at all, I have left it sitting there for about an hour once to see if eventually would work but it didn't. So to fix this I have to restart the computer and it would come up with the screen asking me if i want to use safe mode and usually i would either choose the Last known good configuration or start up windows normally, occasionally i would go in safe mode and restart from there and it would usually work but not always. I usually have to repeat this process several times for it to work. Whi... Read more

That's not so bad, elf. I would check it for a virus though at Trend Micro.
Also, will not address WeatherBug or Daily Horoscope here, but they can cause other spyware issues and probably should be uninstalled.

Let's see what we can do......

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures
below.

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure
that the System Files and Folders are showing/visible also.

Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up).

Hopefully Adaware has removed some entries for you already. So if you see that something doesn't exist anymore, Adaware probably
fixed/deleted it already. Just continue on with the other fixes/deletions.

Make sure to close any open browsers. Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click
Kill process for each one if they are still listed (they shouldn't be - but double check it):

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\HAVIDC.EXE <<<If you recognize this file, then ignore instruction.

Check and fix the following in HijackThis if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):
