Dell Optiplex 3040 - Boots but no video output

Q: Dell Optiplex 3040 - Boots but no video output

Hi there,
I've got a Dell Optiplex 3040 in my workshop at the moment. The computer seems to turn on: there's a light on the PSU, the HDD indicator flashes, the num lock toggles on and off and the traffic light on the ethernet port is active. However, there's no output from the HDMI port or the display port. The machine only has onboard graphics.
I'm thinking that the onboard graphics are at fault, but I don't have a graphics card that will fit in with the PSU in it's current location.
Any ideas for fixes on this? Thanks in advance!

Preferred Solution: Dell Optiplex 3040 - Boots but no video output

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Did you try a diff monitor and new cable? Hard to solve this without any screen. Which model do you have? Only a couple of model 3040's support a discrete card. If you don't have MT or SFF model you can't install a card.
Supports optional discrete graphics (MT/SFF only): AMD Radeon? R7 350X, AMD Radeon? R5 340X

So I recently got a Dell Optiplex 3040 SFF for a good deal. It came with an i5 6500, 1TB HDD and a Single Stick of 8GB DDR3L. I've been reading the specs for the Optiplex 3000 series and they just came with an i5. I was just wondering if it's ok to replace the CPU with an i7 6700 non K, since i have one just lying around. I'm also planning on adding a low profile GTX 1050Ti (Msi probably) Will the 180W PSU that came with the computer support those upgrades?

I've disconnected default SSD (Samsung) in order to connect new emty SSD (Transcend). I was in need to clone my laptop's HDD on this new SSD as a transit SATA port, because I've got only one SATA to USB connector, used by laptop's drive. I've successfully cloned my drives, disconnected all new drives, connected default SSD (samsung) and - no OS boot. I've not changed ANY BIOS settings.
Ok. I've a look on BIOS settings, and I see NEW (almost disconnected) SSD (Transcend) as bootable device. And NO Samsung SSD in boot device. Only Transcend which is no more connecned to motherboard. In SATA I see only Samsung SSD connecned, but I don't see it in BOOT section.
I've restored to factory and than to default settings with no effect. Than I've cleared CMOS - no effect. I see disconnected SSD device in BIOS BOOT section. What I'm doing wrong?

A:Dell Optiplex 3040 SFF

I've changed firmware of my BIOS. Downgraded it up ti 1.2.3 version, than upgraded it again. No effect. Old SSD doesn't appear. BUT in Legacy boot disconnected drive is still present. I cannot delete it. cannot change it to connected SSD drive. I guess it's somewhere in Legacy Option ROMS, and must be changed - but there are no options in this BIOS section. I'm gonna hate UEFI

I bought new memory for this computer... Kingston KCP3L16ND8/8 8gb 1600mhz Low Voltage Mod Mem which is supposed to be DDR3L-1600 UDIMM, but I only see one slot that looks like a memory slot in this box.... and the stick is too long for the slot.  Am I supposed to be looking somewhere else (like under something) for it?  Is this the wrong memory?  The Kingston memory finder said this was the memory for this system. I have 8gb and it is supposed to be expandable to 16.

A:adding memory to dell optiplex 3040 SFF

Is this the small form factor, or the micro form factor?  The micro version uses notebook type soDIMM (shallow profile) memory.

have recently taken delivery of 150 Dell Optiplex 3040 PC's all with the same specification.
I am trying to image then using MDT.
Before taking delivery of all the PC's I took a sample of 2 to test with to make sure I could create an image and deploy it. This worked without any problem using Litetouch and a defined sequence. Happy days.
I then took delivery of the remaining PC's and tried to apply the same image. However this fails on every PC I have tried apart from the initial 2 samples and it is driving me crazy. PC spec is identical for all PC's and there is only one W10 cab available from Dell that I am using for drivers.
I get a black screen  stating
windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.
Status Oxc000001
A required device is not connected or can't be accessed.
This happens as the process seems to be connecting to the Litetouch image so I think it might be a possible NIC issue, even though it does successfully connect to the WDS deployment server.
Any suggestions?

I am using MDT 2013.  I've imported the driver pack for the OptiPlex 3040 from Dell for Windows 7 x64.  After MDT installs the OS, it reboots into Windows to begin initialization but it never finishes.  Instead it reboots again and goes into the Dell Diagnostics utility and runs a test on memory.
After the test runs, it tries to boot into Windows and I end up selecting "last know good config."  It finally loads windows but then none of the USB ports work.  I have to remote into the pc to manually install the USB and chipset drivers to finish the MDT deployment process.  This has happened on multiple machines and is a repeatable process.  Is anyone else having this issue?

A:Dell OptiPlex 3040 Windows 7 MDT Problems

Did you either manage to resolve this issue? Or did you always have to go through last good config?
I'm trying to get Windows 7 x86 to install on both a OptiPlex 3040 and a Latitude E5570 with no joy. The previous models were fine.

I have a Dell OptiPlex 3040 with an AMD Radeon R7 350X video card. This is connected to a daisy-chained set of Dell U2417H monitors. I previously had this configuration setup on my Inspiron laptop and never had an issue.
On the OptiPlex, the monitor screens flicker intermittently, and at least once a day both monitors go black and I have to do a hard reset on the PC in order to get it fully functional again. I've updated the video card drivers, swapped out the cables on each monitor, and updated every driver on my PC. Considering the fact that this configuration didn't cause any issues on my Inspiron, I want to say that this has to be a VC issue. These PC is a few months old and under a three year warranty plan. Any help or suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated!

A:Video Card Crashing on OptiPlex 3040

Hello!  A couple of things come to mind.  Did you update the BIOS at all?  What version of Windows are you running?  Did you get the drivers from Dell's support site or from AMD?  If not AMD I would go there and see if you can run their drivers, the crimson edition. Also did you set up multimonitor support in the Catalyst control panel?  AMD can be a bit finicky.

On boot after pxe network boot I get the message "Please add the network driver to the windows PE image on Windows Deployment Services." I have added many drivers to WDS with no luck and the correct one from the dell website errors and will not let me added it. I have the packaged the drivers into the install.wim and boot.wim using the AIK but still no luck. The drivers from the dell website do not seem to work in the PE environment. I'm hoping that someone has done this before and can point me to the correct driver. I have been looking for the best part of two weeks and i'm sure it can't be this hard.

I am trying to connect an Optiplex 3040 with a 2Gb dedicated video card (AMD R5 340X is only option) to two monitors. The AMD card only has 1 x DP and 1 x DVI digital video ports, while the P2317H monitor (current "standard" business monitor) only has 1 x DP and 1 x HDMI input on it.
My question is:  when is Dell going to release a dedicated video card option that we can actually connect directly to these monitors without having to use converters/adapters etc??? This is nuts.

I need some tech support on this computer/monitor combo…
I have the one monitor hooked up display port-displayport, it works fine.  The second monitor is hooked up monitor-DELL display port-hdmi adaptor, then HDMI cable to HDMI port on computer.  Computer sees the display port monitor only.  both monitors are set to monitor the display port .  Let me know asap, thanks..

I have the dual Dell displays, they only have Displayport and maybe DVI connectors...  brand new Optiplex 3040, had display port and Hdmi ports for video, need them both active at the same time to run the dual display...... OR does dell make an adaptor to run its dual display from one display port?

A:Dell Optiplex 3040 cannot use both HDMI port and Displayport at same time?

Optiplex 3040 onboard video out ports = HDMI, DP
A computer HDMI out port cannot up convert to a monitor DP in port via a straight cable. What you bought is designed to do the opposite; down convert a computer DP out to a monitor HDMI in port.
You would need to add an HDMI to DP Active Converter.
Computer HDMI out --> HDMI to HDMI cable --> HDMI in to DP out converter --> DP to DP cable --> Monitor DP in

We recently got a brand new Optiplex 3040 SFF tower.  We reinstalled it with a fresh copy of Windows 10 Education edition.   But we are having the hardest time installing drivers for this unit.
If we try to load the ethernet driver from support.dell.com for this unit we get an error:
"The Realtek Network Controller was not found.  If Deep Sleep Mode is enabled,   Please plug the cable"
If I use windows device manager to install the driver, I get an error "The Data is Invalid".
When trying to update the video card and sound card drive, we get an error stating "Fatal Error"
We are logged on as local admin, tried drivers both from Dell and RealTek.  We updated the BIOS and Chipset drivers.  Restarted multiple times. Still no luck.

This machine is not connected to a domain. It is in a homeoffice workgroup with full local admin rights. The feature updates 1607 and 1703 will not install during Windows Update. They fail constantly. I tried downloading the standalone installers for them but they fail as well stating that they are "not applicable to this computer". I even downloaded the standalone installer for creator update 1709, which had not yet shown up in the customers Windows Update just see if it would work and it failed with the same message as well. I've uninstalled the antivirus and tried the Windows Update reset procedures outlined on Microsoft support help article 971058 but same issue. Before resorting to reinstalling Windows I was hoping maybe someone here could shed some light on the situation. As a sidenote, all other Windows updates work fine. Its just those 3 that fail.I know this is primarily a hardware forum but I posted here to confirm a claim from a tech who responded to this question when I posted it on Reddit claiming these creator updates were not compatible with these Dells which makes no sense to me.
Thanks in advance,

A:Dell Optiplex 3040 with Win10 Pro - Creator Update 1607 and 1703 will not install

A general comment.  The Windows version you have may be an issue.  Its not that its not compatible with Dell, its that some updates will not install on Enterprise versions as they leave it up to the corporate IT department on when/if they want to implement the updates on corporate systems.
Considering you have an OptiPlex (one of Dell's business system lines) this may be the case.

Hello Support Users,
I'm having an issue with the OptiPlex 3040 Intel HD Graphics 530 Driver for Windows 10 Pro. The machine will work fine for awhile then while certain applications like Microsoft Excel are running, the machine will stop working and give the following error:"Display driver igfx stopped responding and has successfully recovered."
This machine has 2 monitors so using the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter doesn't work, even googling if that works or detects such is almost absent. I'm just letting whoever know it doesn't work with dual monitors on Windows 10 Pro.
I've found this link and installed the following display driver to see if that clears the issue + adjusted some PC settings in "Advanced System Settings" Under This PC : Windows still chooses what to do for visual effects and Virtual Memory is now 4096MB. I've also added the TdrRelay = 10 to the GraphicsDriver section in Registry.
Here is the link that's been suggested and the steps I've taken so far, I did skip the DELL driver and went for the initial Intel Generic Driver instead.
Is anyone else facing this issue with their onboard graphics?
Thread I've used so far to troubleshoot:www.intel.com/.../000005482.html
Any suggestions which could help or solutions for this PC?

My Windows 7 64-bit custom-built PC stopped outputting video suddenly. I thought it was just the monitor entering power-saving mode, but no such luck.

I tested the monitor by plugging it into my iMac that sits alongside my PC, and the monitor works just as it did before.

The monitor was plugged into my Nvidia GeForce GTS 250 graphics card that has two DVI ports. I got desperate and tried swapping ports (I knew it wouldn't do anything but I tried anyway )

I figured the graphics card had died on me and removed the DVI-VGA adaptor connected to my monitor, and plugged it into the VGA port on the motherboard.

It worked, and displayed my boot sequence and then the desktop. However, as I had not used the motherboard's built-in graphics since I bought the card several years ago, and had reinstalled windows many times since then, it had no drivers. So I watched in 800x600 as Windows detected the hardware and installed the drivers, and then asked me to restart, which I did, and later found to be a mistake.

Upon restart, the VGA port was doing the same thing as my graphics card, not showing anything. However, I was able to access it through remote desktop and LogMeIn, and saw that no hardware errors were detected. I then tried using msconfig to restart it in Safe Mode, however, the screen still doesn't display anything, and the LogMeIn software won't run automatically in safe mode. I haven't tried remote desktop yet, but i'd imagine the results would be the same.

Sorry... Read more

A:No video output from PC, boots normally.

Did safe mode alwasy work before? safe mode uses "standard VGA" driver and should always work.

Well... I just got back home from college, I go to school up in south dakota and live in mississippi, well my precious computer rode in my trunk the whole way down, being bounced and jarred around.
I get home and I try hooking up my computer, I dont get any output on the screen... none at all, i've had wierd problems with my graphic card before, but i would just have to do wierd things, like plug it into the dvi port or have a 2nd monitor plugged in for it to work correctly, because it would throw out some wierd resolution that my lcd can't display, this time it's not getting a signal at all though... so i replace the card with a crappy nvidia pci one i had in another computer that i know works fine, still nothing, i've tried other monitors as well.

I get no output whatsoever on the screen, if i listen close i get a beep noise every few seconds it sounds, not sure if this is normal or not, can't really remember, lol, i don't think it is.

Does anyone have ANY idea what could have happened ? I'm about to strip the thing apart and start repiecing it back together. I'm hoping the only option isn't to start stripping it and testing every part to see if it is working correctly.

A:Boots up, no output on screen... seperate video cards.

The first thing would be to make sure that everything is seated properly and didnt come loose. also when you installed the PCI card did you make sure in the bios that the video was set to PCI and not AGP?

First I want to re-emphasize just how bad Dell support is. I went through something similar with an Optiplex 3020 32-bit video driver for Windows 10. Dell doesn't care about problems. They just wanted a credit card. Here we are again....
There is a problem with the Optiplex 3040 and SSD drives. I have four of them out in the field that will, on occasion, reboot for some reason (has to have something to do with the SSD) and when they reboot it immediately goes in to diagnostics and says there is no hard drive present. The fix is simple. Turn it off and turn it back on and it boots fine but there is obviously some conflict with the Optiplex 3040 and SSD drives.
So... I get in chat with Dell and guess what? They don't care. It isn't their problem. They would be interested if I gave them my credit card info. So I took it a step farther and asked is there was some kind if database with reported issues by model. I was told no! You got to be kidding! Dell gets reports of problems and they don't document it or take it serious???? What a jaw dropper. I know Dell support was horrid, always has been, but this goes beyond horrid!
So Dell is obviously clueless. Any users have issues with the Dell Optiplex 3040 and SSD drives like I am having?

I would like to replace the PSU on the 3040 MT with an EXTERNAL aftermarket unit. First, I need more power to run a better GPU and multiple drives. Second, I prefer the heat outside the case anyway. I am using the Moddiy 24-pin to 8-pin Dell Mobo adapter cable.
Someone said that the Antec EarthWatts EA-380D Green would NOT power on my computer (actually they said the EarthWatts series would not work) though they failed to elaborate in any way as to why.
According to the specs I can find, there is no reason why it should not work provided the cables are run correctly.
Is there anyone here that can expand on WHY or the EarthWatts series will not work? If it does not work, can someone please recommend a PSU of 400 watts more or less that WILL work. Again, provided the cables are taken care of.
Thanks very much!

Hi All,
I'm just curious what the maximum number of displays is for this model.  I've only got the Intel 530 Graphics no extra AMD or NVidia card.
The reason I'm asking, is I'd like to add one or two USB video adapters, and want to be sure that the 3040 can actually support the additional displays.
From the Features and Design page:"Support for two displays: DisplayPort, HDMI and optional VGA connectivity allows greater visibility of your tasks. "
But I think that's is just referring to the built in video outputs.

We have a number of receipt printers that we've been using via serial cable. With some new software in the future, I've been moving them from serial to USB and have had no issues. We did have to order about 8 new PCs and I can't get the receipt printers to work on any of them. The printer vendor hasn't been very helpful so I'm kind of stuck. I'm installing the printers the exact same way but when I power them on, Windows is saying it can't recognize the USB device and it's showing as Unknown Device in Devices and Printers and Device Manager. All of the PCs, new and old, are Windows 7 x64. The only thing that's different with the new ones may be the USB ports. They're Dell Optiplex 3040 Micro computers that have 2 - USB Charge ports | 1 - USB smart power on port | 3 - USB 3.0 ports. I believer our old PCs all have USB 2.0 ports, which may be the problem. Doing some research, it appears that the 3040's use xHCI on the USB ports which sometimes cause issues with legacy drivers. Is there a way to disable xHCI and see if that's the issue?

A:Disabling xHCI on Optiplex 3040

XHCI is XTENSIBLE HOST CONTROLLER INTERFACE aka USB 3.0  You cant disable this unless you don't care if NONE of the USB ports work properly.  There is no such thing as making USB2 drivers work with USB3 ports.  There is also no support for Skylake and 3RD party USB Serial printers and Drivers here on the Dell Site.
Dell makes Special Windows 7 builds for Skylake.  There is NO Downgrade Rights for Home Versions of Windows 10 only the PRO versions.  And Dell is not obligated to provide you with downgrade media.   There is support for windows 7 on newer dells but its not free.

You must install the eXtensible Host Controller Interface drivers for windows 7 as well as the CHIPSET Drivers for windows 7.   Skylake Systems are NOT SUPPORTED with windows 7 by microsoft.
Only WINDOWS 10 is supported.
Otherwise you have to find OLDER Dells and use them.

I have an optiplex 3040 with a display port to VGA adapter connected to an Acer 24" monitor.  Every other day or so the screen will have flickering horizontal lines on it periodically throughout the day.  Sometimes powering the monitor off/On resolves this sometime it doesnt and they go away on their own..... One day the screen had horizontal pink lines going across it.  That time it didnt go away until I power the monitor off/On.    I tried a HDMI to VGA adapter, I tried a different monitor, updated bios and video driver.  Any thoughts or suggestions?

Need a solution to run 3 monitors on an Optiplex 3040 SFF. Desktop has one HDMI and one DP integrated into motherboard.
Are there any inexpensive y-adapter solutions or would I need a new video card?
If new video card needed, any recommendations?

I have connected a monitor to the displayport with a DVI converter, and DVI cable and installed a DELL DVI card to the PCI port and connected an other monitor also with DVI cable to this DVI card.
PC does not see the DVI card/monitor. I have tried it with other optiplex 3040 and other DVI card but got same results.
What can be wrong in this configuration?
Thank you

I would like to share my experiences how to fix noisy audio output on Dell Optiplex 755 under linux. I did try changing power supply, better video card, adding separate sound card (front panel audio output doesn't work then) updating drivers and even changing the whole computer. I was first sure that the reason for the noise must be old capacitors somewhere in the system board or in the power supply. It took me months to find the solution.
The symptoms are: static noise on audio even if there should be no sound at all. The noise doesn't depend on the audio volume.
The solution: open terminal, start alsamixer. HDA Intel Analog Devices AD1984 should open. Use right cursor key to scroll the screen until Beep audio level adjust is selected. Lower the volume of Beep down. This should fix the noisy output.  I set the Beep volume to 6%.Apparently Beep sound output produces low level noise even if no beep sound is produced. If Beep volume is adjusted to high in alsamixer, this noise is amplified and added to the audio mix.

Hello all, we have some Optiplex 3040 Micros and have installed the Intel AC 8260 wireless card the same one listed on Dells build page. I have installed the drivers from the Dell downloads page and the OS Win10 64bit sees the hardware just fine. The problem is the wireless card although active does not see ANY wireless networks around it. I have the same issue on 3 new 3040's using 3 different cards. BIOS is updated to the latest 1.4.11.
Has any one used WLAN in the 3040 micro and if so what did it take to get it to work.

There are 2 chipset drivers for Win 7, 32-bit. Did you install Intel Chipset Device Software and the  Intel Management Engine Interface Driver? (And you also need Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller Driver for the USB3 ports.)
You can try this:

Open Device Manager and expand list under Human Interface Devices
Double-click each entry and look for a Power Management tab
If it has that tab, click it and the uncheck the box "Allow PC to turn off..."
Reboot when done and see if that solves the problem.

If not, check the Windows Power Options settings to see if Windows is turning the ports off.
EDIT: Since these are PS/2 devices, you may have to look for the Power Management tab under Keyboard and under Mice in Device Manager, instead of under Human Interface Devices in Device Manager.
