ThinkPad T530 - Keeps Restarting after Shutting Down

Q: ThinkPad T530 - Keeps Restarting after Shutting Down

Greetings - I have a Lenovo T530 Laptop - Windows 10 installed. Each time I attempt to shut down the laptop, the laptop automatically restarts itself. I replaced that power jack because the power button also wasn't working either. I had this same problem regardless of whether Windows 7 or 10 was on it. I have 10 and loaded most Lenovo Drivers, including any with management, chipset. Also, the power options are reset to default - that didn't make any difference either. According to the diagnostics tests, there are no hardware issues. It is only happening on this particular T530 - not have been able to replicate the same problem on others. Any ideas?? Thank you in advance!

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I have a problem with my ThinkPad T530 model 2429NL6, on which Win 10 is running.I purchased a data SIM card and inserted it into the SIM card slot, but I can't connect to the data network.I can't understand if the modem is missing, if the modem is present but the driver is missing, or if it's a problem installing the network in Win 10.How can I move around?(I ask for a simple language in the answer, as I am an inexperienced user)Thanks

Ok, so here's a long story. Purchased a Thinkpad T530 5 years ago. Configured it with two drives that came from Lenovo (one in main HDD bay, another one in Ultrabay - one was IIRC Hitachi and the other one Toshiba, can't remember which was installed in which bay). OS was Windows 8 Home (installed on HDD in main bay) which I sported for a only few weeks since I was confronted with Ultrabay HDD constantly (every 5-10 minutes) parking its head (clicking noise). Being unable to successfully resolve the issue I decided to ditch Windows 8 and install Windows XP 32-bit (also on the main bay HDD). Problem? Gone. In the meantime, I decided to sport a dual-boot system and installed Windows 7 Ultimate (64bit)  on the Ultrabay HDD (in the meantime I replaced the Ultrabay HDD that came from Lenovo with a WD 7500BPKT drive). Problem? None whatsoever, probably because the HDD was constantly in use since it had a OS (which became my main OS) installed on it. Fast forward to a few days ago. Bought a Crucial MX300 2TB 2.5'' SSD and installed it into the main HDD bay. Purchased a SAMSUNG 850 EVO mSATA SSD and installed it into the mPCIE slot. Left the WD 7500BPKT HDD in Ultrabay. Installed Windows 7 Ultimate (64-bit) onto Samsung mSATA SSD and? Problem with Ultrabay HDD constantly (not as frequently as other people using AHCI+Windows+Intel Rapid Storage drivers were reporting though - once every 5-10 minutes in my case vs once every minute or so as reported by other users) parkin... Hello all, I have a real difficulty choosing between these two W520 and T530.  Both are used and prices close.  The main differences are listed as below: (1) CPUW520  i7-2720QMT530  i5-3320M(2) Graphics and displayW520  Nvidia graphics card (Quadro 2000) with FHDT530 Intel 4000 with 1600x900 (3) PriceW520 is $60 more than T530. I am planning to use the laptop mostly for word processing, spreadsheet, PowerPoint presentation in classroom, HD video watching, no video editing.  Any advice or helpful information will be appreciated.

A:Which one to choose - ThinkPad W520 or T530?

For those tasks you wouldn't need a Core i7 or discrete graphics, save yourself some money and go for the T530.The only disadvantage would be 1600x900 instead of 1920x1080, but it would be hard to see the difference.

Good day The T530 will not accept a replacement non-genuine Lenovo battery, I am aware of this. However, I have acquired a 2nd-hand extended battery that IS a genuine Lenovo battery, and when my T530 boots up, it still complains that the battery is not authorised and will not charge. Sure enough, it does not charge. Does anyone know why this would be? The battery is a 8.4 Ah, 94Wh. FRU 42T4969 ASM 42T4802, registered Lenovo product. Many thanks, Ian

Hi Folks, I got my thinkpad T530 last week. I tested the skype after opening the box and it works. Then I took off the original 320G HDD and put my 830 SSD on it, reinstalled the win8 and blah blah blah.Just last night when I tried to chat with my parents on skype i found out the the camera is dead. I tried by doing so:1) according to others threads I uninstall most of the unnecessary drivers;2) reinstall the camera driver;3) deleted the ricoh media driver;4) updated the BIOS;5) tired to locate someone mentioned, the "privacy" problem. But the video/camera option is not even showing up by Fn+F6;6) downloaded and installed the thirdparty AMCAM and it says no camera device can be found.  Please let me know if there is anything else i can do. Thank you ,

I've been trying to find a solution for two full dsays now.My problem:Yesterday morning my t530 windows 10 (upgrade from 8.1) did not open normally. Slow booting and once in Windows, no more audio or wifi or access to startup menu. I did have two upgrades this week, one from Windows 10 and another for the new Bitdefender 2017 upgrade which I accepted. I don't know for sure if there is a link but I suspect there is. I have intented doing a refresh, reset from the diagnostic page and form the prompt page a scan and scannow but to no avail. I downloaded on a bootable USB flash drive rufus windows 10. I have disables secure boot and enabled legacy. When I do an F12 I see the nane of my USB HDD in the list, but when i press enter it just goes back to the top the Boot Menu screen to Windows Boot manager. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

A:T530 won't boot from USB flash drive -- ThinkPad

I wouldn't use rufus.  I suggest making the USB stick in UEFI mode from a computer running with a UEFI boot using the MS media creation tool:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

You can boot from the USB stick in UEFI mode.

I am considering buying a used T530 with Intel CORE i7-3520M 2,9 GHz and intel HD 4000 graphics I own a T510 and the coil whine is bad. is this a problem on the T530 with i7?I understand that there's been problems wiith fan noise, but  a bios update fix that. I am using Thinkpad fancontrol on my t510 and it works fine I understand Thinkpad fancontrol works on T530, but what is the lowest fan speed.? My T510 runs around 2400-2500 rpm at lowest speed and the noise profile is kind of annoying, should be a bigger fan really which runs at around 2000 rpm I am buying with the 1600 display which in reviews says is good. Anyone can confirm this?

A:Thinkpad T530 not starting in regular mode

Most likely a bad driver since in Safe Mode windows uses generic drivers.   My guess would be the video driver, so while in Safe Mode, use device manager to uninstall the existing video driver and start clean. Right click on Start and select Device Manager or Start >> Run and type: devmgmt.msc  and press EnterClick on Display Adapters to openRight Click on the Intel HD Graphics and select Uninstall,  making sure to check the box to "Delete the driver software for this device".RebootIf it was the video driver, then Windows should boot normally using a generic driver, and then download and install a new driver via Windows Update. Since it just started, running a disk check (chkdsk) would be a good idea too.Right Click on Start and select Command Prompt (Admin) and press EnterIn the Command Prompt (Admin) window, type:   chkdsk C: /f   and press EnterPress Y to accept scheduling scan for next bootReboot and it will run at startupGood Luck,

I had been having a problem with my laptop that makes the screen reddish for almost a year. I tried everything - creating, setting, deleting Windows color profiles, updating drivers, disabling drivers... I got a bit desperate and started disabling services and processes until I disabled the following process:...and my screen was suddenly OK. Notice how the screenshot is also reddish. This again is due to that little **bleep**. I don't know what it does but it even manages to crap all over screenshots, not just the display. After I found that this caused the trouble, I deleted all of it at this location:C:\Program Files (x86)\Lenovo\ImController\PluginHost Now everything works fine and I can see white on my screen for the first time in a year.

Hello,I will write first what my goal is. I would like to have USB 3.0 port on the ExpressCard card (I can buy a new one recommended), but it should be able to supply power, feven only for a small pendrive, a smartphone, although my first goal was to connect at least one external USB drive.I have a Lenovo Thinkpad T530 laptop.I really need extra USB ports in it.So I bought one ExpressCard/34 card first, which adds 2 USB3.0 ports and has the option of additional power supply. This is a Manhattan card.Link:https://manhattanproducts.eu/manhattan-en-superspeed-usb-expresscard34-150583.htmlI installed the NEC uPD720200 driver which was on attached CD.Initially, I was hoping to even connect 2 external USB drives. One time such drive was successfully connected. After this one time, after entering the disk it is in a moment disconnected or there is no sign that I connected it (even no sound). The disk normally works on other USB ports. With a pendrive only 1GB, it was the same. The smastphone also only plugs in so that it only powers it, but it does not shot its disk or it shows it, but it is unavailable to enter it.So I bought another ExpresCard card with 2 USB3.0, this time from 4World company. It also has the possibility of power supply (cable included).Link:https://ikupiec.pl/Product/Index?Id=6748&path=trueI uninstalled that NEC driver uPD720200 from Manhattan and I tried to install the NEC driver uPD720202 from the 4World motherboard, but I couldn't because there was a message... Hey,I've recently installed windows 7 on my t530 because in win10 I couldn't use fingerprint reader cz there's no suitable driver available. So back on windows 7 I installed all the latest drivers from lenovo support site. Fingerprint Reader works perfectly! Now I got like 180 Updates installed. After reboot my fingerprint reader didn't work anymore. I can open the fingerprint tool but the green led is not glowing anymore.in device manager everything is ok. latest driver installed, detected as biometric device.  also it's listed in system settings.I checked my BIOS settings and clicked on "reset fingerprint data" and also disabled the device and enabled it back.nothing seems to work.. is there any solution? Maybe windows blocked the driver or something i don't know. I've deinstalled the fingerprint software AND the driver in device manager. reboot, and installed all again. nothing.. how can this be?

Hi. I can't get the webcam to work. I got this laptop around mid June of this year. Tried to use the webcam for the first time today, Nothing. My device manager doesn't even list a camera. I tried to intall the driver (twice) to see if that would help, but as far as I can see, it's had exactly 0 effect. I downloaded the lenovo settings app, and it's not there, either. At least, I see no setting options for it. But this model of laptop supposedly has a webcam built in, and my model looks pretty much exactly like the others I see on google images, except for a circly light thing in the strip where the camera is supposed to be. I have no idea what the hardware/wiring should even look like so I can't help there. I've been at this for hours. At this point I would just buy a webcam off Amazon or something if I could be sure that the laptop would actually register it.

Hi My T530 will not boot properly. I think that there is some software glitch on my T530 hard drive stopping it booting. It was installed with Windows 10. I tried all the blue screen functions including refresh whilst maintaining files. None worked.I also have a T470 with Windows 10 installed.I would like to download the files from the T530 hard drive before reinstalling Windows 10. I do not have an external hard drive caddy and would rather not have the expense of buying one - otherwise I would just put the drive in that and copy the files.I would like to put the SSD hard drive from the T470 into the main bay of the T530 to see whether it all works ok and if so to put the the old hard drive from the T530 in a caddy in the ultrabay to get the files off it, before then reinstalling it using a system image on a portable hard drive. Will this scheme work? Can I take the hard drive from the T470 and put it in the T530 and expect the T530 to function? Can I do any damage thereby? Thanks for your help Dan

Hello, everyone, thanks for letting me posting my question, I thinks this is a wonderful site, with many nice people, so, my problem is that I have a pc running windows xp, and I have a problem to shutting it down or restarting it, every time that I want to any of those actions, I have to do it twice, because if I try to do just once my computer doesn't do anything at all.
Well, I thinks that is quite weird having to go twice to start>shutdown to make the system goes off, can someone tell me what could be the problem and how to fix it?

Thank you..

A:about restarting or shutting down my pc

I sometimes have this problem with my Windows 2000Pro machine.

Sometimes, applications like ccapp.exe (Norton Utilities) don't close properly when you try to shut down the system and it hangs. Wireless input device managers like itouch.exe (Logitech keyboards and mice) also have this problem.

Another possibility is that you just aren't patient enough. Depending on the amount of programs you have actively running, it will take some time for Windows to shut them all down. If in fact you wait more than 30 seconds to 1 minute for it to complete, then you know something's up.

1) Do you get any errors saying a program is not responding?
2) Have you defragmented lately?

I have a friends computer here, who said it was starting up on it's own. I cleaning it out with compressed air, made sure all the connections were good. I cleaned up some stuff on the pc, a bit of adware and stuff, did a scandisk and updated everything. I have had it on most of the day waiting to see if it would improve after being physically cleaned. It began ( after most of the day on, but connected to nothing ) shutting down and instantly restarting, over and over until I unplugged it from the wall. The fans would cut out and then the system would shut down for a split second and restart, only to do it again. I think it is the power supply, but was hoping for more experienced advice. Does the fact it takes a while when it's on before it happens mean anything? I did check the cpu and mobo temps and both were around 33 C.

The system has WinXP home,

Intel pentium 4 2.53 ghz

So, im having this problem for a few months now, my PC randomly shuts down or restarts itself, there is no BSOD or any warning, freeze, stop or anything, it just goes dead like power failure, and then (usually) starts up the next second by itself. Im not noob when it comes to computing, and i have searched the whole web for similar problems and tried to fix it myself but nothing works long term.

Naturally first thought was its Power Supply dying out. But the shutdowns are not regular, sometimes my PC works for 10 days without problems, and other times it restarts 10 times a day, it doesnt have any obvious patterns its completely random. I have some experience with PSU issues and this is not usual behavior.

Then i assumed its overheating issue (my CPU temp was really high, reaching 90+ C), so i cleaned the fan and applied new cooling paste, now my usual temp is 45 - 50 C idle and 65-75 loaded (I have tested with BurnInTest and will paste results on the bottom of post), so i dont think that is the real issue, besides, restarts happen even when PC is idle.

Then i tought is DDRAM, because I had similar problems with RAM b4, so i bought new 2GB DDR2, bu it didnt help.

I have also cleaned my registry with TweakNow RegCleaner, and old drivers with Driver Sweeper. Also i scanned the disk multiple times with Avira, there are no viruses.

Today i tested hardware with BurnInTest, and everything was peachy. My next assumption is MB problem, but i dont know how to check it, there are ... Read more

I am running XP with the latest updates as of two days ago, I have not uploaded other any new software. The problem started about two weeks ago. every so often my computer just shuts down and restarts. Sometimes it says there was a major crash and asks if I want to send an error report sometimes it just restarts with no error message.

It will run for hours w/o any problems and then it will do the above a couple of times with in an hour or so. There does not seem to be any pattern. I am always on line when it happens as I never use the computer when I am not on line. I run Firefox as my browser a fairly new version but not updated lately..so no changes there, I use AOL.com and Hotmail for email. I have not accessed any new sites or downloaded any new programs since this started to happen.

I have run disk check and it took about 2 hours to run..seemed to work OK..the info screen at the end was not up long enough for me to actually read it but after it popped the system restarted. I have not done any other maintenance type things..like defrag lately.

Any help or ideas would be appreciated..getting very frustrating as the frequency of the shut downs are getting closer.

A:Restarting instead of shutting down

Hello Everyone,

Desperately waiting for anyone's reply (please take no offence, I know you are extremely busy!) and with Oshwyn5's diagnosis of backdoor Trojan and coolwebsearch, I have tried various antispyware to try and get rid of at least some of the ugly worms.
There has already been Ewido antispyware here on this computer - but something seems to be prohibiting it from downloading an actualized version! Other antispyware I could not even download! (AdAware). Kaspersky was not allowed to run by the computer... (and I do not think it is because of firewall, I have enabled the necessary functions). Finally I managed to find a program which I could download - Webroot Spy Sweeper - it did find two trojan horses (winlogonhook and gloogle). I put them to carantine, deleted them, restarted, ran Spy Sweeper again - and the winlogon horse is back again Spy Sweeper also shows pop-ups saying it is disabling the access to potentially spyware-ful sites - which I am not trying to access! Apparently the systems tries to access the sites itself...
Avast is apparently too weak to find the trouble - doesn't show anything.
The computer still cannot be turned off when asked to, always restarts itself. I have to switch it off mechanically which I know is not very healthy...
Will be grateful for anything anyone can come up with. THANK YOU!!

Hi TechGuys,

I have turned to you before and am turning to you once more, although I do not know if I am in the right forum.. I will be grateful if you can help me out again, thank you very much in advance for all your effort.

I have troubles switching off my desktop computer - anytime I choose "shut down" (sorry if I'm not using precise terms, I am translating), it restarts itself automatically - as if I picked the "restart" button which I do not. This has been on for the past few days. There is not much I have tried, I have to admit - I don't know what to try.

I am using windows XP version 5.1 on this computer.

Here is my HJT log, don't know if it is helpful.

Try a different power supply, maybe it's going out. Another possible cause is faulty RAM or RAM that is mismatched.

During Far Cry 2, Crysis, and the FEAR 2 demo opening cinematics, my pc shuts down and restarts, without a blue screen. However, I can sit on Left 4 Dead or WoW and play it for hours and have never had any issues. I've been asking friends and looking around the web for answers. Any ideas or help regarding this would be greatly appreciated. If you need more info let me know, thanks.

Hi all.
I have been having a bit of a problem recently.
A few days ago my PC decided to shut itself down without warning, i had steam open at the time but had nothing else running. Then 2 days later it shut down again while i was playing a game, I think it was guild wars 2.
Yesterday it shut down only a few seconds after booting it up, and i couldn't switch it back on for a few minutes.
Today while playing torchlight 2, the computer froze, a loud buzzing noise came from the speakers, the monitor then went off and the PC reset.
When It booted back up I had an error message that said bluesceen as the type of error, unfortunately I don't have any of the other details of the error message right now. But this was the only time I had an error message.

I have been checking temps and everything seems fine there, at least as far as I can see. I have used a few different programs such as everest, smartdoctor and core temp. My temps seem to be around 30c idle and go to around 60-70c under full load. I regularly clean out the computer so there is no dust build up or anything of the sort.

All of the hardware I have had for at least 6 months, so not recently installed anything new.

Here are some of the specs;

OS-Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
Motherboard- ASRock H55M Pro
CPU- Intel Core i5 Quad core @2.8ghz
GPU- GTX560ti
RAM- 8GB

If there is something else you need please let me know, I am not an expert by any means (hence why I am here :P)

I am just wondering what I could try and do to i... Read more

D/L and run Hardware Monitor do something intense like a virus scan or gaming for a bit, Alt+Tab back to HWM expand all the trees and use the Win7 snipping tool to grab a screen shot of the HWM window, post the screen shot using the paperclip button in the advanced message box(Go Advanced button).

What PSU are you using?

I have a habit of leaving my laptop on all the time, it's plugged into power. What is too long to leave a laptop running? How many times should I shut down or restart it?

Thanks

A:Shutting down and restarting laptop

You are going to get many opinions on this, and heres mine.
You should shut down at night.
If you use it many times during the day leave it in sleep or hibernate mode.
A computer should be shut down at least once a week so minor problems can be corrected during boot.
Good luck

As you posted this in the Hardware Forum I assume that you think that it is a Hardware issue.

Why do you think it is Hardware and not a Windows issue..?

Hello,

I am new to this board so I thought the best place to start was general discussion. Ok, I have an HP laptop that has recently started shutting down and re starting itself. It offers me the option to start in SAFE MODE.

I also have gotten a few messages asking that I stop running the script that I am running or I could harm my computer. Both of these things are recent on a computer running windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.

I must confess that I do not understand the script message at all, but I always agree to stop using it. My computer is my life line--quite literally as I am hearing impaired. I would appreciate any imput that you may have and I am more than willing to work to resolve these problems.

BTW, I have NIS 2011 and it says that everything is running fine. I do wonder if the tech who set this up did the right thing by keeping the old drive files in a new computer. Especially when the files are from a Windows Vista computer from several years ago.

Thank you in advance for your help!!

A:Recent shutting down abd restarting by itself

Hello Allegra 50 and welcome.

Let's tackle each problem separately as I don't think they are related to each other.

When it comes to a laptop restarting and seemingly random times, it's for a reason. In most cases, Windows created a BSOD error and restarted. To find out if this is TRUELY the case, when your HP logo appears when the computer is booting, press F8 repeatedly until you receive a menu of options. One of those options should relate to disabling "automatic restart" or something to that effect. If the machine "blue-screen's", read some helpful hints here: http://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-d...tructions.html in order to better help us by getting all the information about the problem as possible.

In regards to this script message, in what program are you getting this error in? What are you doing when this error appears?

Also, please share with the class your HP's model number so we get a better idea of what we're looking that.

Thanks!!

A few days ago, the computer was on and then it shut down and restarted itself. It was a little creepy ... like someone else had control over the computer. Then a little while later it shut down and I decided to leave it off. It started up by itself again a little while later. It stayed on for a couple of minutes and then shut down.

It does go fully into windows. I sometimes have enough time to open the device manager and look for exclamation points (none). It did go into safe mode ... but I didn't know what to do in there. It didn't help when I picked last good configuration.

I am running Windows XP SP3. Right now I have the computer turned off and the power plug pulled out so that it doesn't start up and shut down on its own.

I did post this on the Windows XP forum and now I'm thinking that I might need to be posting on the security forum. Here is the link to the original post and help I received:

http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt-2000-xp/780415-windows-keeps-restarting.html

The computer now only stays on for a few minutes and then shuts down. I have copied the hijack this log to a thumb drive just in time (before another shut down).

I have attached the log (at least I think it attached). I don't see where it shows the attachment. Oh I'm not sure, so I will copy and paste it into this document to be sure.

Thanks for your help.

A:Windows keeps restarting and shutting down

The computer was staying on for more than 5 seconds, so I thought maybe everything was good. It was on for quite a while and I trusted it and walked away. I was in another room watching a movie (2 hours maybe), I came back and found that True Vector had been turned off. So something was disabling my Zone Alarm. I shut down the computer for the night after that.

I have the computer turned on for over an hour running AVG and I haven't noticed that screen again.

I'll report back when I'm done with AVG, Adaware, MalwareBytes and Superantispyware scans later today ... if the computer lasts that long.

Thanks any other advice is definitely welcome.

For over a week now, my sons computer (this computer) keeps shutting itself down or restarting in middle of playing games, within ten minutes of playing.  It seems to do this any time i play any game, but not when im on youtube, or steam, or browsing etc.  Can someone help me determine whether it is software problem or hardware problem or something else.

A:computer keeps restarting or shutting down on its own

Download BlueScreenView:
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html
unzip downloaded file and double click on BlueScreenView.exe to run the program.
when scanning is done, go to EDIT - Select All
Go to FILE - SAVE Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all of the content, and paste it into your next reply
