Over 1 million tech questions and answers.

microsoft account, lost password, locked PC, etc. etc. etc.

Q: microsoft account, lost password, locked PC, etc. etc. etc.

I have Windows 7 so had no idea how screwed up this could get. I've googled this for 3 hours and the simplest of answers will never be provided. No one seems to be able to think thoroughly on this.

My 90 yr old dad has a hosed PC. It now has his login screen associated with an email address. He can't remember the password and trying to reset it with live.com also doesn't work.

Here's what we have:

email-address-user (Microsoft account) with admin privileges
locked out

If one resets email-address-user's password via live.com, does THIS AFFECT POP3 access? Meaning, is this password reset only for logging into one's PC or is this reset password synched with the actual email server one uses to download their emails? This WOULD be a very valuable piece of information but no website deems it useful. My reason for asking is I don't want to reset his password and then have it such that he can't read his emails. And I'm not about to try to communicate over the phone what he would need to do to update his client email (or internet access) password.
To get to the desktop, I tried a ton of things but the only thing that worked was net user administrator /active:yes.

What I would like to do is "revert" the email-address-user from a Microsoft account to a local account. I'm 100% game to edit the registry 100 ways to Sunday. I've poked around googling and no one will provide the simple registry layout for a Microsoft account and a user account. It seems if I try to use netplwiz to allow automatic login, it STILL won't work. Also, if I try this I new get TWO accounts shown in the lower left of the login screen.
I don't think it's safe to DELETE email-address-user as it will take C:\USERS\email-address-user with it.

If I try to do anything with my newly created administrator account like open Internet Explorer, it says that the built-in admin account can't use that app.

Ultimately, I'd like to have email-address-user be a local user with NO password.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am Arun Kumar Kushwaha and I have discovered one Big Loophole/Security Leak in Microsoft's Windows 7 Operating System worldwide.
through which we can Access/Delete/Copy/Replace Important Data without Cracking/Resetting the Login Password in Windows 7 OS
and for this we not need any 3rd party Software/ CD/ DVD/ Pen drive/ CMD/ Script/ or any other means of hacking Devices/tool.

only through Windows 7 OS we can Access anybodies Computer Around the world, and user will never get to know that his/her computer has accessed by someone else.
This is purely Microsoft's Negligence towards user's Around the world.

U can assume how much serious is this Issue, if anybody can steal confidential Important data of Company/ Govt data/ or any other Sensitive Personal data of anyone who are using windows 7 OS.

I have Talked through telephone to MS India regarding this Issue and they told me that there is no loophole in their OS and can't be accessed by anyone without having Login Password or User need to Reset login Password with tool/software available.

also i have mailed to MS Technical support Team and also asked about this issue on Windows worldwide official support forum, but not get any meaning full response from them.

I am asking this message to here, coz i want to Spread this issue around the world, so every user can secure their Data and also MS can rectify this issue by releasing an OS Update.

Thanks for reading ..

Hi, I have my brothers laptop that has Win8 on it. Sadly he has passed away and was unable to pass on his password. I've managed to retrieve the data of it as he was a writer but cant get into the computer. It originally came with Win8 installed and would just like to reformat it and reinstall Win8.
Has anyone any clues? I've tried downloading password keys and password breakers all to no avail.

Unfortunately there is a forum rule which states the following.

No subject matter will be allowed whose purpose is to defeat existing copyright or security measures.

What's really unfortunate in this situation is the fact that we can't substantiate your ownership of this computer.  There for I can not help you with the password.  But I do have an alternate suggestion.  You could use a program like Darik's Boot and Nuke to overwrite the whole HDD/SSD and then download a Windows 8 or 8.1 ISO image which you can use to create a bootable installation disc.

You can download the ISO image at Windows Eight Forums.

How to burn ISO image using Windows Burn Disk Image.

Notice:  This applies only to Windows 7 and Windows 8, earlier versions do not have this.

1.  Place a blank CD or DVD in the tray of your optical drive and close the tray.

2.  After you have downloaded the ISO image you want to burn right click on the Start orb, then choose Windows Explorer.

3.  When Explorer opens click on Downloads in the left pane.  Scroll down till you find the ISO file you want and double click on it.  Click on Burn Disk Image.

4.  In the image below you will see Disk burner:, this should be set to the optical drive you want to use.  Click on Verify disc after burning if you want to Windows to verity the disc image after burn.  Click on burn.

Hello, I am running WinXP(SP2)
I have accidentally locked my admind password using "net user" commands in command prompt. problem is I'm not sure what i changed it to.

I only have Guest Priveleges on my PC.
I deleted my other admin account, so my only admin account is locked.

I read somewhere about burning a boot disk (to reset the admin account password), but I'm looking for a different alternative. Does anyone got any help?

That might be my only option, but I hope not.

Hello,

Please help, I have spent all day trying to fix my windows 8.1 Laptop.

My system:

Windows 8.1 Dell XPS 13 9343 I7 with TPM

A family member used my laptop for Skype which required them to create a windows account. They just put jibberish into the account and all was fine and they used skype. When I went to use my laptop this morning my account was locked by this account.

I have spent hours trying to get access to the account and talking to Microsoft technical support. They finally suggested reinstalling windows 8.1 and recovering my files from Windows.old. However I cannot install windows as my files are protected by bitlocker. And i cannot switch off bitlocker as I dont have admin rights as my admin account is locked. Is this impossible to rectify. Please help if possible as this is really distressing me.

Microsoft in Redmond, Washington, locked me out of my Hotmail email account, claiming someone has hacked into it and I need to prove to them that I am the real owner of that account. After filling out the forms they sent to me, requiring subject line detail of recent emails and recent email addresses of people I wrote, they sent me another email to my new Outlook account stating that they have given me back access to my old Hotmail account.

Now, how do I get that valuable information I had in my old Hotmail account and where is it? It is not in my new Outlook email account. I use Windows XP operating system.

I also understand that this isn't a tech support forum question as much as it is between myself and Microsoft/hotmail, but i can't contact them... I'm borderline helpless!

- to begin:

A couple days ago i updated to windows 8.1 from windows 8, and around that same time i began receiving messages via outlook/ my mailbox saying that my account may have been accessed elsewhere, and that i had to verify my details. The message was from the "Microsoft Account Team", which seemed like something a hacker came up with, so i ignored it... then last night i went to check my emails, and the same thing popped up, this time prohibiting access to my emails, forcing me to verify, it was then that i realized it was legit. So i tried to "get the verification code", however... the place that they expect to send the code to is the very email inbox that they had restricted my access to, so there is/was no way to get this code and verify my email. I have a Dell laptop that I haven't rebooted in months so when it shut itself off ( b/c battery died) I not longer remembered the password for Windows (Win7). I tried too many passwords and apparently shut off the account b/c when I obtained the password (my hubby remembered it) it not longer worked.

I looked up for ways to reset the password. I managed to boot the laptop from a Macrium recovery disk & open a command prompt. First, on the menu that allows you to change boot order, I also set a password for the admin (it had not been set before).

So now I'm logged in as admin from the CD and opened a command window. Now resetting the user password for the account called "owner" should be cake. However, is not b/c the username account seems to be missing: when I type "net users" I only get two accounts: guest and admin. No trace of the user account called "owner" which is the only one I ever used!
"I also get an error "The command completed with one or more errors"

I read that that may be b/c the account got somehow corrupted. Does anyone know how to tell if the user account is corrupted? Any guidance for how to recover the account & it's password?

Locked out of User/Admin Account - wrong password guesses?

Help guys,

I've had my account LOCKED (acc name: "SENIOR") on my home PC running WIN XP Professional (version 2002 i.e. no SP's).

The kids typed in the wrong password too many times and now WIN has decided to lock the account for me. This account was set up with full Admin rights so I do all my system admin through it.

There is another Administrator account on the machine - I guess we'd call this the MAIN Admin account??? - but I've never had reason to use it so I've forgotten the password for this one and I've tried a couple to no avail. Don't want to keep guessing for fear of locking this one out too.

Through another user account (with min priviledges) I have access to the machine and I can get to my usual account in Command Prompt <runas /user:SENIOR(i.e. username) cmd> but I'm not familiar enough with command prompts to figure out how I can restore my main/usual account (i.e. SENIOR).

Anybody able to point me in the right direction?

"Oh kids - I just love em - but I couldn't eat a full one" ;-)

tia,
J

Hello -
I have been using a local (non-microsoft) account to sign in to my laptop. I set a four digit pin a few months ago because it's easier to remember and use - however - I have forgotten my actual password. A month or so ago, I attempted to use the 'netplwiz' feature to reset it and was asked to re-start the computer. After doing so - my account was not accessible and I ended up using the recovery tool and rolled it back to prior state.

My question is - How can I reset my password without this happening again? Do I need to use the built-in admin account? The 'netplwiz' tool will not allow me to reset as the 'reset password' button is greyed out. The only other account that exists on my laptop is the 'built-in' admin account. So, should I log out, and log back in to the built-in, or create a 'new user' account? I just don't want to lose everything under my account. I was wanting to change to a 'Microsoft' account, but was asked to enter my 'old' password (which I'm guessing is my local account password), and I don't have it - only the four-digit pin.

Any help would be great! If additional information is needed, I'll be happy to provide! Thanks!!

Lisa

Hi, If you normally access the Admin account with an email and password, see if you can reset the password via another PC from the Microsoft page on the following link.  https://account.live.com/password/reset Otherwise, there is a general policy on the Forum not to provide methods to bypass Windows log-on passwords, however a local computer shop would be able to do this for you. Another option, if all your personal data etc is backed-up, would be to reset the notebook to its 'Factory Condition' and then set it up from the beginning ? if you don?t have your Recovery Media, the notebook will have shipped with a Recovery Partition which can be accessed at boot - ie shutdown the notebook, then start tapping away at f11 as soon as you power on. A full guide on this can be found on the following link. http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00006110#!&AbT1%3Fjumpid=hpr_r1002_usen_link1 Regards, DP-K

I'm sure this gets asked a lot, but I can't find exactly what I'm looking for.

A few months ago, my mom bought a laptop from Dell. She set it up with 2 local accounts, with her as the only admin account, and now she's forgotten the password.

All the information I've found requires you to either have made a password recovery disk, or have a windows recovery disk. Her computer didn't even come with the windows recovery disk, so she has neither. I can still log into the second account, but it's not admin so I can't do anything.

Losing the data on the computer is fine at this point; she didn't really have much, and I can backup what she did have. But again, I don't have a recovery disk so I'm not sure what to do.

Thanks for any help!

Hello guys!
So, I decided to create a thread here in case any of you know what to do.
I've checked several internet pages, but my problem seems to persist.

I just got my desktop Windows 7 Home Premium back after a year from where it was stored, but I have forgotten my password completely.

I have tried several options of password retrieval/removal:
- Ophcrack (CD/DVD)
- TRK (Trinity Rescue Kit) (CD/DVD)

Ophcrack had an issue with not being able to find the tables, displaying the message "no drivers found", no matter what I try to click on that might help me in my case.

TRK also encounters a problem, where it says:
"Trying to find TRK on your 0 CD-drive(s)
TRK not found on CD, Checking harddisks & USB sticks (sleep 5 secs let them settle in)
SCSI: 0:0:0: CDROM TSSTCORP CDDVD SH-S202J SB02 PQ: 0 ANSI: 0 SR 0:0:0:
Attached SCSI generic Sg0 type 5 cat:/etc/trkhd: No such file or directory
Seems we didn't find anything yet. Trying CD-drives once more. Try to find TRK on your 1 cd-drive(s)
Seems we didn't find the TRK medium
Manually enter the device on which TRK can be found (e.g. 'sda1'):

If I enter sda1, it just tells me that something is wrong/could not load/no such file in directory.

Any idea on what to do instead/do to fix it? I want to try to avoid having to reinstall my whole computer, and I appreciate to have the answer as easy as possible, because I'm not that much of a computer-person.

x Kidd

I am setting up my first Windows 10 computer, having been on Windows 7 for a number of years, and I have run into a problem with the Microsoft Store. I have never had a Microsoft account before but I decided to go with the flow and allow my user accounts to be Microsoft accounts rather than local accounts. But my admin account is strictly a local account.
I am setting up a new computer, so naturally I plan to install software from the admin account and then set user accounts to be able to use it. The Microsoft Store doesn't ask for an account until you select something to buy or download. So I selected a free app to download (Audiobooks from Audible, I think it was), and responded to the Choose an account prompt, while logged into my admin account, but I responded with my personal Microsoft account information. Seems to me that it asked me for account information twice, but I'm not positive. Anyway, the Store now seems to be somehow linked with my admin account and unavailable from my user account.
When I now bring up the Store from my admin account and select something to download, the "Choose an account" pop-up displays my Email address, which is the login for my Microsoft account, as used for my user account on this computer, PLUS an entry entitled "Microsoft account Outlook.com, hotmail, Live.com, MSN". Selecting the second choice asks me to enter the login info for a different Microsoft account, or to create a new account. OK, this makes... Read more

Read more

I am a 87 year old who had his first computer, a Commodore 64, in the early eighties and have enjoyed computers ever since, currently using WIndows 7.
Having just bought a smart 'phone, I find that I'm unable to buy apps for it unless I remember my Windows Live account password. The problem is that I must have chosen a password many years ago which I have never had to use and have therefore forgotten.
So the problem is resetting a forgotten password.
I spent literally hours yesterday complying and answering the same questions again and again, giving my second Email address, date of birth and location, mother's maiden name and the subject of my latest private Email, only to arrive back at the original log-on window. Microsoft once sent a temp. password for me to enter, which did not work.
The password reset file I made in a flash drive was a .psw file which crashed Word 2007, and didn't work.

It is obvious that many people have had the same problem with Microsoft.

Can anyone help?

I was stuck in a loop booting to safe mode. My user account is attached to a LIVE logon and a PIN instead of password. I followed a guide on how to reset the password. I did that but was still blocked so I was able to create a new user. Now I am unable to log in with my account because it says RPC failure. I think that's because it's no longer able to connect to Microsoft.

How can I undo this and regain my access to that account?

Hey everyone So not long ago I changed my password to a touch screen password (making lines and shapes to access computer) and I have since tried logging back in but it has reset it to my original password, which I now don't remember. I tried calling customer support but apparently I'd have to pay for a service to actually reset my whole computer! Does anyone have any other solution than this? When I try clicking reset password a pop-up appears saying: (This feature requires removable media, such as a USB flash drive)Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks All  I'm running windows 10

I created a password for an MS account more than a year ago. Have not needed to use it until today. Installing an app. Can't remember it. Is there anyway to reset or recover a MS PW? How can I fix this, short of a brand new re-install?

I do not like having to enter the same password of my E-mail to login on Windows 8, how can I turn off this?

TOTALLY.
I have to enter my damned password several times a day... really annoying.
Have you tried the netplwiz app to bypass needing a signature?
It does not work for me, but may for you...
Go to start.
type netplwiz and click on apps, see one listed, run that, UN check the box which says a password is needed.
That SHOULD do the trick but does not.

I think part of my problem is having 8 win8 systems at home, all with the same username... but you would think Wiindows 8 could allow a user like me to network with my own computers without having to deal with permissions etc... really irritating.

Mark.

Yesterday I got a client's Lenovo Desktop 8.1 with a corrupted Microsoft Account Password only in the computer. The Microsoft Account signon is ok, just the computer has the issue with it.  I have worked on this problem for many hours, and with no success. The computer is a Lenovo Desktop with Windows 8.1 installed with an SSD and an HHD drive. There are no markings on the case to tell me model number. I also realized after awhile that you need to hold down the Shift Key when either powering off or restarting to insure a complete boot up.
1. My client apparently opened an email that messed up his computer. He contacted Microsoft and one of their technicians got into his computer. From that point on apparently the microsoft account signon password got corrupted only inside his computer. I can signon to his Microsoft Account, got microsoft to send me a code so I could reset his password. This worked on his account only. Still cannot logon to his computer - password failed - try again message.
2. I tried F1 - Bios, F12 - Boot Menu and cannot get past the CMOS password. Boot menu lets me past but cannot change anything - trying to change boot order so I can boot to Hirens. F1-Bios gives me a fatal error. I also tried F10 to change Boot from Standard to Legacy - F10 does not work on this Lenovo Desktop.
3. Pulled the Cmos battery for 30 minutes, put it back in and no change to the Bios password, still locked out of modifying anything related to boot order.... Read more

A:Microsoft Account Password in Win 8.1 Corrupted - Need a workaround

I am not sure how Microsoft got past the CMOS password. There should be a jumper allowing you to clear CMOS which would remove any password. With the CMOS battery removed hold down the power button for 30 seconds to remove any residual power.

The computer has SecureBoot enabled so no disk will boot even if you could get to the F12 boot menu.

Is there any sticker on the back of the computer?

New Windows 10 Home desktop. I put in Carol when it asked who would use the computer.
After a restart, it showed Carol and Welcome, then I could just click on it and use it. The only user was Carol and no password was needed. That was OK.

I set a system restore point, then I set up Cortana and it asked for my Microsoft Account and Password. I already had a Microsoft account, so I entered my name - Allen Bredt - and password.
Now there are 2 users, Carol and me. After a restart, it wants my name and password.
I can use System Restore to go back, but then what?

I want it to just give me the desktop with no sign on required.
Can you help me.
Allen

A:Microsoft Account Required Sign in and Password

Hello Allen,

It sounds like you switched your local account "Carol" to a Microsoft Account "Allen" while setting up Cortana.

If you like, you can keep using your Microsoft account and set Windows to automatically sign in to it at startup.
