Outlook XP copying pst folder into another folder

Q: Outlook XP copying pst folder into another folder

I use Outlook xp with office xp professional and windows xp professional. For some reason, I have two folders in the left margin. The top folder is called "personal folders" and when I expand it it has most of the file folders and subfolders of the second major folder. The second major folder is entitled "outlook today" and when I expand it it has most but some more of the same folders as the "personal folders" folder. I think that I created some different contacts and updates to some contacts in each of the folders not realizing I was opening two different folders. I beleive this started when I had to add a second hardrive and brought the files over from the older hardrive to the new one. Is there a way to merge both major folders and then have only one that preserves the newest additions to contacts, calendar, etc., any newer folders and the newest changes?

I recommend downloading and running Outlook PST Repair. It's a PST repair tool that I've used it in the past to recover emails, contacts, tasks and notes from corrupt Outlook files that are damaged or inaccessible. Supports Outlook 2000, 2002, 2003, 2007, 2010 and 2013.

You can download it direct from this link http://goo.gl/1bjhSi. (This link will automatically start a download of Outlook PST Repair that you can save to your computer.)

I'm trying to copy (not move) a category of contacts in my contacts folder in Outlook to a subfolder. Is this possible? (Please note that the contacts in this category are also in other categories as well, if that makes a difference.) It's not giving me the option to copy unless I copy the entire contacts folder, which I was going to do and then just delete the contacts I didn't want, but it won't let me copy all my contacts to a subfolder. Help!

My old PC has packed up and died. I have now got a new lap top. I have removed the hard drive from my old PC, put it into an external case, and have hooked it up to my new laptop. Is it possible to transfer the contacts and addresses file from Outlook on my old harddrive onto the lap top and thus access in Outlook? And if so, how do I do it? Thanks for any comments/guidance.

All the files exist on a server 2008 R2 NAS shared folder. Our users can copy files from a zipped folder to another non-zipped without issue on their XP workstations.  On the new Windows 7 workstations, neither copy/paste, ctrl+c/ctrl+v, nor
drag and drop move all the selected files to the destination.  The progress popup shows progress and then just disappears without event  nor error.  The destination folder will contain some of the selected files but seldom all.    I
have been able to recreate the problem and have applied several TN posted solutions but the issue remains.  Has this been seen by anyone else?  I am not interested any third party apps or complicated workarounds being my end users are not technical.

A:Error message copying Personal folder in Outlook 2003.

Hi Lennyc123

Welcome to Tech Support Guy Forums!

Just copy the .pst file to the CD.
The .pst file contains all your messages, contacts, tasks etc.

If, when, you need to fall back on the backup, copy the .pst file back to the hard drive, remove the Read-only attribute and open the .pst file with Outlook:
File > Open > Outlook Data File
Browse to the location of the .pst file and select it. It should open in Outlook.

Let us know if that works for you or not.

Hey there, mates.

Got this small issue, and can't find an answer. Sorry in advance if it's lame.

I have a setup with Windows 7 Pro and Outlook 2007 Pro. When receiving emails with attached emails and saving those attachments, Outlook always goes to a default folder (Say %userprofile%\Documents). Is there a way to force Olk2007 to point to last location an attachment was saved to? I thought it might be W7 issue, but couldn't get through on that front either. Ideas?

User came in with a receiving email issue and to make a long story short I found that his inbox and all subfolders including sent, junk ect. are subfolders of the trash folder.(deleted Items) I tried to back up, clean(glary utils) and reinstall but the backup reordered the folders the way they were. I will uninstall again and hand build the folders and subs if need be but I was hoping someone here might know a fix before I spend 2 or more hours creating and moving from imported folders (home based company with 33000+ emails)

Any ideas appreciated.

Also noteworthy is that Norton failed after the hearbleed patch and had to be completely removed and reinstalled. the reinstallation of Norton was AFTER trying to repair Outlook.

I had a crash and the operating system had to be restored non-destructively. The backup operation saved the Microsoft Outlook .pst file. I have now recovered all the e-mails but the Contacts folder is "empty" when looking for an address. The Contacts folder (as well as the Calendar folder) also does not appear in the list of folders in the Navigation Pane. If I attempt to export a comma separated file (DOS) from the Personal Folders, the "Contacts" folder appears in the window when browsing for the folder to export. If I export that file, all the contacts are there complete with all the addresses when viewed as an Excel file. Any suggestions on how to integrate the contacts into the Personal folder without having to recreate a contact file manually from the Excel file? Cheers, Wondering Willy

My friend (we'll call him David) created for some sick and twisted purpose a folder path that contained 107 (no joke) folders within folders, something in the order of, "C:\folder\folder\folder\folder\..." David is now unable to delete the folder directory. When he tried to delete it, it says "Are you sure you want to move the folder and all its contents to the recycle bin? (yes, yes to all, or no)." He clicks "yes to all" or "yes", and it says, "The folder contains items who's name is too long for the recycle bin. Do you want to permanently delete it?" He clicks "yes" or "yes to all" again and it says, "Cannot delete z: Cannot find the specified file. Make sure you specify the correct path and filename."

Anyhow, does anybody know how to delete this file? Any assistance would be greatly apreciated.

First, please forgive me if I have overlooked this issue in the many searches I have performed thus far.

I would like to know if anyone has a way to change all folder icons within a single folder to one specific icon without performing each one individually. I have over 1,400 folders within a master folder of which I would like to change the child folder icons. I really don't wish to perform this on a folder-by-folder basis.
This is not a Default Folder Icon Change inquiry. This is simply all child folders within a single master folder. I would also be interested if the change would affect all folders of a specific type. Windows 7 does allow the 'setup' of a folder to be distributed (details view with selected details, order, and column size for example) but the icon did not distribute as well.

Any suggestions?

A:Bulk Change All Folder Icons in Single Folder or Folder Type

First, a little bit of theory. What happens when a person sets a custom icon for a folder in Windows 7?
1. Attributes of a Folder change to Read-only (of the folder, NOT content!).
2. A hidden system file created inside that folder, which contains a link to the icon.

Thus, having such file as model, it is possible simply copy it across desired folders, and change attributes of those folders correspondingly.

Secondly, having this idea in my mind, I have put all of my little knowledge of Batch files together and created a script.
BEFORE script is started the following is needed to be done:
Master folder needs to be selected and a custom icon applied to it.

1. Script is placed inside that master folder and launched.
2. First, script checks if hidden system file with custom icon settings is there.
3. Secondly, script looks for subfolders and start changing its attributes.
4. Thirdly, script copies this settings file to all subfolders of current master folder, including all levels of subfolders.

For 100 folders it took about 21 seconds, for 200 folders with different levels of subfolders it took about 57 seconds on my laptop.

I have included remarks (comments) in the source code for better understanding what is going on.

UPDATE: Original file deleted. Script was not meant to be applied to system folders.
Please check a newer FIXED version at this post.

Hi everybody :

I'm having a problem with my System. I'm running Windows 7 Professional / 32-bit. Lately, I've been getting numerous BSODs. Most of them say "Bad_Pool_Header. On the latest one, I didn't notice any specific problem stated. To see if it's hardware or software, I'm thinking about doing a rebuild on my System (re-installing the Operating System). One question I have is....can I copy an entire folder to an external drive ? On the Propeties of my external drive it states : " 3.39 GB used.......928Gb Free". The Properties for the Pictures Folder states : "Size of files in Library---19.1Gb". So I figure the Folder SHOULD fit. But, can I do it in "one go". Or would / should I do it in parts ?

I'm having trouble with a game all of a sudden and I'm not sure if it's hardware or software related, so I may try to reinstall the game (even though it has been working perfectly fine for 4 years until now ) and see if that helps.

The game... NASCAR Racing 2003 Season... takes up about 15 gigs on my hard drive. I will burn most of the files to a CD, but I'd like to copy the entire folder or subfolders somewhere else on my hard drive (ample space) to make it an easier transfer later on.

The folder is 15 Gb. Will Windows let me copy and paste something that big? How long will it take?

Or is there a certain reasonable limit for each copy and paste? Don't want to make my CPU and hard drive explode to make matters worse.

As with prior versions, in [Windows] Explorer's main window, you can enable hovering to select and single clicking to expand the folder (but that is a pain in the rear when working with files). Windows XP folder view nicely allowed single clicking the folder name to expand the folder. Was that removed from Windows 7? Looks like the only way to expand a folder in folder view is to either click on the small plus sign or to double click on the folder name.† Or is there a switch somewhere I am missing? Thanks.

A:Single click folder name to expand folder in folder view?

It seems that you are talking about the navigation pane (the left pane) in Windows Explorer. Is that correct?
The feature is not present since Windows Vista. When we click on the item, the sub windows will be displayed in the main pane (the right pane). In the navigate pane we can only click the plus button or double-click on the folder to open it. Arthur Xie - MSFT

This is something small, but kinda annoying for me. In XP, if I copied and pasted a file within the same folder, the file name would be "copy of file.ext". this was great for me cause I could easily sort the files by name and then move them to the final destination folder.

But now in Win7, the copied files get renamed with copy at the end, like "file.ext - copy". Now I cant sort by name, and have to use the sort by creation date. Its not that hard obviously, but try teaching that to senior citizen when all he wants to do is easily find his photos.

I know its a small thing to complain about, so please dont flame me. All Im saying is that I would like to know if theres a way to tell Win7 to rename copied files within the same folder as "copy of file.ext". Anyone out there think they can help?

I went into an image folder, right clicked on a image, and selected copy. I then left the folder to paste the image in another spot. Well for some reason when I went back into the folder I copied the image from everything in it was gone.
I first checked the recycle bin but there wasn't anything there. I'm assuming it is due to the file being large sized. It was full of photoshop images my husband had worked on. That is the main reason I'm worried they are gone. We did have some files I backed up but haven't done it in a while.
I tried doing the Previous Versions tab but there wasn't nothing. I checked hidden files and nothing. I then tried a system restore and then undid it since it didn't help.
I'm out of ideas to try. If anyone has any ideas please let me know.

Hi, first I would like to quote the information printed to the display screen with the problem I am having.

"Error Copying File or Folder

Cannot Copy <FileName>: There is not enough free disk space.

Delete one or more files to free disk space, and then try again."

Some things first;

I am attempting to save a file which is not even a MB in size.

I am attempting to save to a NTFS drive.

I am saving to an external network drive.

The drive has more than 200 GB free space.

No users on the network are able to save or copy a file to the drive, including special priviledge accounts.

A mere 3 weeks ago we were able to use the drive perfectly well.

This has occured before, but was fixed somehow. There was no documentation which leads me to believe it was fixed by error.

The machines used to attempt to save to the drive are all Windows XP machines, fully updated. The drive is located within the internal network and is accessible by all users of a specific room.

Any help is appreciated,

Thank you.

I'm trying to back up some stuff to an external hard drive. Hello all,

It's my first time posting, I apologize if I am posting under the wrong category.

I made a really dumb mistake last night while setting up a VPN. Long story short I deleted my user account. Now, I did not lose any data at all (the account's folder still exists, untouched, in the /Users folder), it is just the user account picture and log in information that are gone. I have no way (that I know of) of re-referencing it so that it appears on my log-in screen again.

My issue is that I effectively lost some programs and all configuration files that were exclusively associated with that account. Which is years of config data that I would HATE to have to do again. My questions are as follows (which are two sides of the same coin really).

Is there some way to re-reference this user account so it shows up and loads up like normal on windows login once again? (The system displays it as "User Unknown")

If not, is there something that I can do with the /AppData folders of the new (recently created) and old ("deleted") accounts to make my new account be just like the old one?

A thousand Internets to whoever helps me with this! I have been cursing aloud all day long.

Hi all,

I have a Synology DS213+ NAS which is running well. Since upgrading to Windows 8.x I now get an error every time I try to copy/move a file or folder from the NAS to a UAC protected directory, i.e. C:\

The error is: "Location is not available. P:\ is unavailable. If the location is on this PC, make sure that the device or drive is connected..." it goes on.

Anyway, if I copy the file to the desktop first, or another non UAC folder, its fine.

I am aware of Windows 8.1 causing some other issues with the NAS so I have disabled SMB2 and Large MTU.

A:Error copying file or folder

Given the length of the filename, I would be willing to bet you're bumping into the limit for a filename.

Microsoft is happy to tell you that file names in Windows can be up to 255 characters long. What they neglect to tell you is that the FULL PATH is included. So say you have C:\Some_folder\another_folder\one_more_folder\some_really_excessively_long_and_obnoxious_file_name.txt that will be a 102 character long file name. If you exceed 255 characters, you tend to get a rather misleading error message like you received. Try shortening the name of the file, getting rid of the string of numbers for example, and I'd be willing to bet it will copy just fine.

Hello, I recently restored a bunch of my data on from a messed up hard-drive to my friend's computer.

I am at his house right now trying to get the files back, but I have run into an issue that is starting to drive me INSANE!

I can see his computer in the network from my Vista machine, but whenever I try and go into his computer I am prompted to log in. I use his login information, but it ALWAYS gives me a login error.

When asked to login to my Vista machine from his XP machine, I log in with my username and everything works fine.

However, when I try to write files to my Vista machine, I get this error:

Error copying file or folder:

Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.

If I was able to write files to my Vista machine from his XP machine, it would literally take 5 minutes to copy what I need over

If anyone knows how to get around this, PLEASE help! I really need my files back for work and school, and this is really starting to get aggravating.

Thanks for the help,

Who are you logged in as? Often, if you've got a personalised account, the default is 'User'. You'll probably want to be in the 'Power Users' category at least. Log in as Administrator and see if you can do it, or maybe modify your user access from Administrator, and then do it with your account.

If you're in as Administrator, then it's probably that there are some files with the name that you're copying in that directory already that are marked as Read Only, so if you really want to over-write them, right-click, properties and remove the 'read-only' flag.

Good luck and happy flying.

I have Vista Home Premium 64bit, and I am simply trying to copy a folder from my hard drive to an external drive. When I do this, I get the message :

Could not find this item

This is no longer located in C:\Users\SaminDallas\Searches\Documents\File.ppt

Does anybody know whats going on and how to fix this.

This is messing up my means to make backups.

Is there something going on with the Searches folder ? I navigated to the Searches folder and do see the files there - but I have no clue what this Searches folder is doing.

Any help would be appreciated,

ps. this has always worked in previous versions of Windows XP, etc..

Every time I send a message the dialog box pops up saying 'Copying message to Sent Folder' and the progress bar shows completed but there it stays and hangs. The message is sent but no copy can be stored.

A:Thunderbird. Copying message to sent folder hangs.

Start by reinstalling TBird: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/. As long as you don't choose to delete your profile you won't lose any of your personal stuff. It's a good idea to backup any way. If that doesn't work, we'll take it from there.

I was copying a users local profile from one machine to another and when it copied over to the new machine it was displaying the name as webhelp. I tried to rename it but it was showing the correct profile name when you try to edit it. I click to get out of the rename and it still shows webhelp. When I look on the machine I copied it from it is now showing the folder name as webhelp as well. Anyone heard of this or knows why it happened?

Hi all,

While dragging a folder from one external hard drive to the other, the entire process froze. (The copy didn't initiate) I opened the task manager and used End Task on the two frozen windows. A few moments later, the folder copying icon appeared on my cursor... and now it's stuck there, in spite of the fact that nothing is copying.

I can click inside a folder and no copy initiates. I can't find a way to get this icon off of my cursor without restarting. (It does vanish temporarily in certain programs, like Photoshop) I can restart if necessary but a set of very large files are mid-copy and I'd like to find another way to shake this phantom icon if it's possible.

Here's a screencap of the logo I'm stuck with:

For reasons I won't explain, I want to have one large folder on a large external hard drive that will contain all of my pictures. The problem is that my pictures have been downloaded (by various cameras and software) in multiple folders and places on my C drive. I know that normally an easy way to do that would be to search in windows for all pictures and then copy them to the new drive and single folder. The probem is that several of the pictures are named the same but are actually different pictures. Additionally, the pictures have been downloaded from the camera multiple times in the small folders, each containing many duplicates.
What program (or windows application) can I use to copy them into the one folder so that I don't have duplicates and I don't have one picture (named the same as another) copy itself over the other.

A:copying pics from multiple folders into one folder

Hello all,

I'm running a genuine copy of Windows 7 Ultimate. I just completed a fresh install (with MS's help) and now I'm reinstalling all my files and programs. I have copied the "My Documents" folder from a backup drive to another drive. However, I noticed that in the source drive there are "214 items" but in the destination drive there are only "144 items". This is my second attempt at trying to move the files from one drive to another. The first time I copied the times, only 114 items copied over.

This doesn't make sense. Maybe because there are too many files or it's too large of data for the clipboard? What am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance!

A:Missing files after copying folder to another drive

Copy the data in smaller chunks, if you try to copy something that`s already been copied it will let you know.
